O

n a hot June weekend in 2012, two visitors were introduced to Murray, Kentucky, and quickly discovered what makes it the Friendliest Small Town in America. The team from Rand McNally and USA Today were visiting the first of six towns on their journey to determine which would be crowned the winner in the Best of the Road competition. The journey began in May 2012 when online voting for the annual Best of the Road contest commenced. Small towns across America could be nominated for an award in one of five categories: Friendliest, Most Fun, Best for Food, Most Beautiful and Most Patriotic. Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau, knew that Murray would be a shoe-in for Friendliest. "It's no secret that this community is friendly and has a special way of making visitors and residents feel at home," she said. So, the CVB launched a campaign to get locals, former residents and those who love Murray to vote for the town as friendliest. Hundreds of towns were nominated across the five categories, but Murray finished the voting in second place, guaranteeing it a site visit from one of the Best of the Road teams. Each team was assigned to a category and each category had six finalist towns. The teams traveled cross country from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, Washington, putting Murray as the first friendliest contender to receive a visit. The other nominees were Joplin, Missouri, College Station, Texas, Frisco, Texas, Cloudcroft, New Mexico and San Luis Obispo, California.

The Best of the Road team that visited Murray consisted of Jennifer Jordon and Bob Schatz, who spent three days in the area. During that time, they met with many residents while also getting to know the area. The team took a sightseeing plane ride over the region, went boating on Kentucky Lake, attended a community picnic at Central Park and dined at local favorites including the Big Apple Cafe, Rudy's and Jasmine. Jordon and Schatz spent the next month visiting the remaining five towns. Then, on July 17, 2012, in Seattle Washington, it was announced that Murray had been named the Friendliest Small Town in America. Word spread like wildfire through social media and the entire community beamed with pride. "We already know how friendly Murray is; now it's time for the whole world to know," Carrico said. In an interview with USA Today, Jordon and Schatz said that Murray residents "had a way of bringing you in, and we made friends. This is the only town where we went into people's homes." They added, "It feels like home in Murray more than anywhere else." Since the designation was bestowed on Murray, it has increased tourism to the town and been a source of pride for locals. The CVB launched a campaign marketing Murray as the Friendliest Small Town in America, and visitor numbers have increased since then. However, the biggest impact of this award has been within the community. Citizens still boast with pride to friends, family and anyone who will listen that they live in the Friendliest Small Town in America.

re you in need of a relaxing, country drive on a warm, sunny day? If so, consider driving the long stretch across Calloway County that makes up its Quilt Trail. A quilt square is a quilt pattern, usually with a unique meaning or story, painted on a large square. They can be found scattered all over the region, in locations ranging from historic barns to downtown shops, adding color and character to the existing structure. The Calloway County Extension Homemakers started the quilt trail in 2010 and since then it has rapidly grown to include more than 40 squares. Quilt squares can be found throughout Calloway County, mainly on historic barns and painted in a variety of patterns and colors. Each design is chosen by the land owner. uring a quick tour of Murray, one will find many sites rooted in history. Whether it's the historic downtown, campus' oldest buildings, or one of the many historic markers, the town's past is evident. Calloway County was formed in 1822, the 72nd in the Commonwealth. It was named in honor of Col. Richard Callaway (Note: throughout history there are two spellings of this name: Callaway and Calloway depending upon the books used in the reference). The soils were particularly fertile and well adapted to the growth of "Gold Leaf Tobacco"--the chief product of the county. At one time, there were as many as 15 tobacco factories in the city. The first settlement was probably in 1818, by David Jones and James Stewart from Caldwell County. This was in the vicinity of the settlement of Wadesboro, which was the site of the first county seat. This community flourished with more than 300 citizens and became a center for land speculation. Many emigrants came to Wadesboro in search of vacant land when the public lands were offered for sale by the legislature. It was indeed a thriving town with much accompanying excitement and activity. It quickly lost its prominence when the lands were parceled and sold. Wadesboro fell into ruins after many of the citizens moved away. The county seat was then moved to Murray.

During the time of the Civil War, Calloway County was a center for intense Confederate feelings. As many as 500 men joined the Confederate ranks, with approximately 200 to the Union forces. Fort Heiman, in the southwest corner of Calloway County, was occupied for a time by Confederate forces under General Abram Buford, with one brigade of cavalry, one regiment (3rd of Kentucky) infantry, and a battery of light artillery. These were under the control of Gen. Nathan B. Forrest when he made the successful assault on Johnsonville, Tennessee, in 1864. A few decades after the war, Murray’s fortune turned especially bright with the establishment of Murray State University in 1922. The university began as the Murray State Normal School and owes its existence to a man named Rainey T. Wells. Wells lobbied the Normal School Commission to choose Murray as the site for a new institution, and he eventually became the second president of the university. Having a university definitely set the tone for Murray's prosperity. The economic benefits of the college create a thriving environment for the town and its future growth. Source: City of Murray

wenty-five wins in a row. A CIT National Championship. The last undefeated team in Division I basketball. A surprise win over four-seed Vanderbilt in the NCAA tournament. These are sentences that describe the last few seasons of Murray State Racer basketball. With such success over the past few years, it's no wonder that there is a contagious excitement surrounding the team. Although the Racers have always had a dedicated fan base, the 2011-12 basketball season grew it to new heights. Suddenly, a national spotlight was cast upon Murray as the Racers fought for win after win, going down in history as the last undefeated team, and advancing to the NCAA tournament. The 2013-14 season proved to be no less exciting, with the Racers earning a postseason title after a devastating loss in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Tournament. The team played five fast-paced and close scoring games, eventually winning the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. This season, the Racers started off less successful than they had hoped, losing four of their first seven

games. However, that slow start was followed by 25 consecutive wins, including undefeated regular season conference play. RacerNation, as MSU fans like to collectively call themselves, were ecstatic over the accomplishments of the team. What do future years hold for the Racers? With 28 consecutive winning seasons, Murray State is definitely a team to watch. The men's and women's basketball teams play home games at the CFSB Center on Murray State's campus. In addition to the stellar basketball team, MSU has many successful programs, including a football team with eight OVC titles. RacerNation is a fan base that supports any Murray State team. In fact, in 2014, the volleyball team had its best season in school history, going 26-6 and winning the OVC Tournament. The school is also home to the sports of cross country, golf, rifle, track and field, baseball, soccer and tennis. O

ne thing that makes Murray unique is the ways its citizens join together during times of need. Whether it's during a time of crisis or for a struggling nonprofit, Calloway Countians tend to have way of pitching in when it matters most. This isn't just a casual observation made by locals with pride in their community. It's a fact. According to Peter C. Weber, director of nonprofit leadership studies at Murray State University, Murray citizens give more of their income to charity than the average U.S. citizen. "The Chronicle of Philanthropy found that, on average, Americans give about three percent of their income to charity. In Murray, the giving ratio increases to 4.72 percent, thus being well above national average," he said. Weber added that the strength of these community ties is heightened amongst the generous lower and middle classes. "In Calloway County, the giving ratio of the lowest income bracket (up to $25,000) was 12.73 percent," he said. With such a strong giving rate, it's no surprise that this community is home to a large number of nonprofit organizations. There are currently 165 nonprofits registered in Calloway County, 152 of which are located within the city, according to

Weber. "With one nonprofit organization for every 119 persons, the Murray community has a nonprofit density that is above the national average, which is of one nonprofit organization for every 175 Americans." Religious organizations also make up a large part of the strong nonprofit sector in Calloway County. In fact, the county is home to more than 100 places of worship. The nonprofit sector supports the community in more ways than one. Weber stated that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nonprofit sector employed 13.4 million individuals nationwide in 2012, which was 10.3 percent of total U.S. private sector employment. In addition to helping those in need, local nonprofits employ professionals who work to make the community a better place to live. According to Weber, Murray State University is working to respond to the increased need for professionalization and leadership in the nonprofit sector. Through the Nonprofit Leadership Studies programs, students obtain knowledge and skills in the areas of program development, financial resource development and management, volunteer and human resource management and more.

f you want to know what makes Murray so attractive as a place to reside, look no further than the awards and accolades the town has received over the past five years. Based on important statistics like cost of living, safety and size, these awards illustrate why retirees, college students and families flock to Calloway County.

In 2014, real estate blog Movoto named Murray the number one place to live in Kentucky. According to the article, the community topped the list due to its "low cost of living score, some of the finest weather in the state, good air quality and low income tax rate." Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Erin Carrico said she was pleasantly surprised when Murray was named the best in the Commonwealth. "We did not know we were named number one until the day the article was published. Looking at the criteria for ranking cities though, it is clear that Murray is one of the best," she said. In addition to this award, Murray was honored as a Playful City USA for the seventh consecutive year in 2014. America's Promise Alliance has named Calloway County one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People on four different occasions. To top it all off, in 2012, Murray was awarded the Friendliest Small Town in America by Rand McNally and USA Today. In 2015, Hazel, Kentucky, was named one of the Ten Best Antiquing Towns in the U.S. by Fodor's Travel. Hazel has long been known for its array of antique shops, and the town brings in visitors from across the region and state.

In addition to recreation, the health of its people is important in a community. For the past six years, Calloway County has been listed as one of the top 10 healthiest counties in Kentucky. Another reason those who live in Murray are so health-minded is the outstanding health care system. MurrayCalloway County Hospital is home to more than 70 physicians representing 28 medical specialties.

Taxation is a factor that many pay attention to when choosing a place to call home. Murray is known for its low local taxes. Those who work or reside within the city limits purchase a $50 city sticker annually, in place of a payroll tax. Since a payroll tax is often a percentage of income, the city sticker fee is often considerably lower. Tax rates can be found in the tax rates chart below, and are dependent on exact location.

In the past, Murray has been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance. APA bases this award on fundamental resources young people need to succeed, one of which is having a safe place to live. The organization is built around the framework of ensuring that more young people experience safety. According to City Rating, which rates towns based on crime reports, in 2012 (the last year for which data is available), the violent crime rate for Murray was lower than the national average by 56%. The town was lower than Kentucky's average violent crime rate by 24%.

Although most small towns boast shopping as a fun activity, Murray is home to more than its fair share of boutique, antique and specialty shops. Bookstores, clothing boutiques and home decor stores are scattered throughout town. In the past few years, Murray has seen a surge in the number of specialty boutiques. Most of these shops are locally owned and stock items that can't be found anywhere else. One of Calloway County's most important attractions is a small town named Hazel, the antique shopping capital of Western Kentucky. Originally established in 1890, Hazel was a booming railroad town. As time passed and the railroad industry began to dwindle, so did the small town, and by the late 1980s Hazel was struggling to stay alive. Then, the emergence of a few antique stores breathed the life back into it. Today, Hazel has more than a dozen shops representing hundreds of antiques dealers. It is also home to an art gallery, a jewelry store and few cozy restaurants. Shopping for antiques is truly about more than a good bargain. It's about having an adventure and finding that perfect, out-of-the-ordinary piece. Only an 8-mile drive from Murray, visitors to Hazel can park their car once and spend the day getting lost in the shops.

With a large regional population, strong community organizations and a zest for fun, it's no wonder Murray hosts several festivals and events each year. Freedom Fest, an Independence Day celebration, is Murray's oldest and most popular festival. The weekend event kicks off on a Friday evening with a street fair full of vendors serving fair favorites like funnel cakes and corn dogs, and also includes arts,

crafts, games and more. A free outdoor concert on the court square featuring popular local bands lasts well into the night. Festival-goers can also enjoy a cold drink at the beer garden, right next to the concert stage. Saturday is a day for family fun. As the sun rises, local businesses host a 5K and one-mile run. Next, thousands of people line Main Street for what has been referred to as the "largest small town parade," often featuring more than 80 different entries. Kids' Zone is open on the court square, and provides inflatables and children's activities at no cost. Later that evening, Central Park is filled with families listening to music, enjoying pony rides and munching on good food. They all gather together for the favorite Freedom Fest activity, fireworks. The Briggs and Stratton Fireworks Extravaganza always proves to be a dazzling show that lights up the sky to awe-struck viewers. The festival also includes a car show, Veteran's Remembrance Ceremony and other events. As the summer weather begins to cool, locals look forward to one of their favorite events: the Ice Cream Festival. What could be better than free ice cream? The September event features free Purity Ice Cream, and not just plain old vanilla. Four different coolers on the court square serve dozens of different unique flavors of ice cream, such as white chocolate raspberry, butter pecan and chocolate moose tracks. The event has plenty for the kids to do, with inflatables, a singing contest, a car show and other fun activities. -3The fourth Saturday in October, the Scottish invade Murray. The Murray Highland Festival is a fun event where participants can enjoy music from bagpipes, unique athletic competitions, highland cattle, sheep herding and much more. For a five dollar admission fee, those who enter Central Park will be transported to Scotland, where kilts and bagpipes reign. With so much to do in Murray, each season brings a different possibility for fun. More information on tourism and events can be found at tourmurray.com.

T

he year 2014 saw a series of disasters that forever changed the landscape of downtown Murray. However, the charm and bustle of the court square remain.

In February 2014 a building collapse just off the square resulted in the loss of two historic buildings. Immediately after the collapse, the Chamber of Commerce, Murray Main Street and the Convention and Visitors Bureau worked together to assist displaced businesses and to spread the message that the remainder of downtown was open for business. While still recovering from the consequences of the collapse, a building on the opposite side of the square caught fire in July 2012, and quickly spread to surrounding structures. After the blaze was put out, the loss of buildings downtown continued, with five being torn down as a result. Murray Main Street Manager Deana Wright said that looking forward, her organization is focused on the positive. "I’ve heard it said that the best of people come out at the worst of times. That was true in 2014. After losing seven buildings in less than six months, it really put stress on the economy of downtown but everyone on the court square worked together like a family to battle back. Now, we are all working together to plan for what our downtown has potential to be. We have the opportunity to build our downtown into an even better place to shop, eat, work and live," she said. While the 2014 downtown disasters were a significant loss to Murray's court square, it has not stopped the area from prospering. Despite all the changes, residents and visitors still flock to downtown. While the rest of the city features many popular chain stores and restaurants, downtown Murray is one of the best places to find locallyowned shops and eateries unique to this community. The court square and surrounding blocks are filled with a variety of retail shops, restaurants, service providers and even an art gallery. The stores

downtown sell a vast selection of items including home decor, books, handmade furnishings, collectibles, clothing and more. Between the shopping, art and restaurants, it is easy to spend hours browsing the square. Downtown is also the focal point for many fun events throughout the year. Every Saturday morning during the months of May through October the square is lined with vendors selling in-season vegetables, fresh fruit, meats, bread, flowers and handmade items at the Downtown Saturday Market. Freedom Fest is Murray's largest festival, taking place on or near July 4. The two-day festival includes free concerts, a street fair, parade, fireworks and kid's activities, centered on the historic court square. The first weekend in September, people from all over the region and state travel to Murray to get their hands on some free ice cream. During the Ice Cream Festival, the streets along the court square are closed, and Purity Ice Cream serves up countless combinations of its unique flavors to the public at no cost. In addition, there are inflatables, music and many other activities to keep the family busy during this two-day festival. As the year winds down and cold weather approaches, Main Street Merriment consumes the court square. This event consists of the lighting of the community Christmas tree, live music on the courthouse lawn, performances from the local theater group, pony rides, food, and an alley elaborately decorated with lights and filled with actors in 17th-Century London costumes. Although downtown has been through a lot in the past year, it has made the community even stronger as citizens pull together to support local business and the history that the court square holds. www.mymurray.com • Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce

ach Saturday morning, as the sun begins to rise, the court square comes alive with the sights of farmers unloading fresh produce from their trucks. This means it's time for the Downtown Saturday Market, Murray's farmers market. For the past 17 years, the Downtown Saturday Market has been organized by Murray Main Street. It takes place every Saturday from May through October from 7 a.m.-noon. The market truly epitomizes the word "local." The bread is baked in kitchens in your neighborhood and the vegetables come from fields you pass on the drive to work. Even crafters who sell goods at the market are required to handcraft their products. The Downtown Saturday Market has seen a surge in vendors and customers recently. "Over the last five years, we have experienced tremendous growth with an average of 35 vendors per weekend and during peak weekends upward of 50 vendors," Main Street Manager Deana Wright said. "Downtown is such a great place to meet up with friends and spend Saturday morning shopping for fresh veggies and handmade crafts. We are proud to bring this market to our community." The Downtown Saturday Market is made up of vendors who are long-time sellers as well as fresh

faces. One of those vendors is Copeland Orchards, made up of Mr. Jerry Copeland and his wife Joann. They have been coming to the market since the very first year. From Graves County, they start their day before the sun comes up by harvesting the day’s produce then driving to Murray to sell it. Copeland Orchards sells everything from artichokes to zucchini at their booth. Another long-time vendor is Beverly and Ken Kietzke. The couple are artists who have been selling at the market for more than 10 years. Beverly sells handcrafted sterling silver jewelry while Ken, an awarding-winning artist, sells wood burned and painted gourds. Besides the interesting vendors, there is another thing that makes the market unique. The Downtown Saturday Market is a certified Kentucky Proud farmers market, designated by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Kentucky Proud food was raised, grown or processed in Kentucky by Kentuckians. Shopping at a Kentucky Proud market keeps dollars close to home, supports local farms and provides the consumer with fresh, nutritious food. From farm to table, shopping local at the Downtown Saturday Market is a win for the consumer, farmer and community.

eing situated in the southern Midwest, Murray is within driving distance of 65% of the United States. Six major metropolitan areas are within a 300 miles radius of Murray: Nashville, Memphis, St. Louis, Louisville, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Within that radius are eleven major Interstates. Also, the Tennessee, Mississippi, Cumberland and Ohio Rivers are only a short distance from Murray.

development of commerce and encourage economic development. "It will provide one roadway from Texas to Michigan opening up West Kentucky to trade and tourism as never before. It will provide a higher level of access for the transportation of goods and services. This aspect assists our economic development organizations in recruiting companies and bringing jobs. The interstate will also support the barge industry and its anticipated increase in export/import trade from the expansion of the Panama Canal," he said.

Murray’s prime location makes it a top spot for new businesses and industry.

A future development near Calloway County could have a huge impact on transportation and economic development in Murray. The proposed Interstate 69 route would change the Purchase Parkway in Marshall County to a section of I-69, and potentially stretch from Canada to Mexico. This change would affect cities locally as well as nationwide and could directly connect Murray to major cities including Houston and Indianapolis.

Another construction project in the works affects those who access Murray from Tennessee using Highway 641, which was built in the 1930s and is now a heavily-traveled road. Recently, the Purchase Area Development District ranked the widening of Highway 641 South number one on its annual priority list.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, feasibility studies show I-69 will return $1.63 for every dollar invested in it. From Indianapolis to Houston, I-69 will create 27,000 jobs and add $11 billion in wages. With Kentucky being at the heart of the corridor, local officials have no doubt about the impact I-69 could have on Western Kentucky.

Kyle-Oakley Field, Calloway County's local airport, facilitates air travel for private planes. Johnny Parker, airport manager, said the airport has come a long way since it first opened in 1961. “All that was here was a ramp, taxiway and runway. We didn’t have fuel, a hangar, an office or lights.” Now Kyle-Oakley Field is an essential part of the economy and has been an asset in attracting new industry to Murray.

Chris Wooldridge, district director for the Kentucky Small Business Development Center at Murray State, said the opening of I-69 will allow for the

These future changes along with Murray's existing prime location make it at top spot for new business and industry.

Only a short drive from Murray is a nature-lovers paradise, with two lakes and a national recreation area that divides them.

Calloway County is home to Kentucky Lake, a haven for outdoor adventure. The lake hosts some of the best fishing, boating and hunting in the country. It is known as the "Crappie Capital" of the world and also has an exceptional population of largemouth bass. In fact, catching a bass in excess of five pounds is not uncommon. The lake also houses several other fish including smallmouth bass, spot, bluegill, red ear, white bass, shell cracker, stripers and sauger.

Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area includes 170,000 acres of wildlife, history and nature viewing, all wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, canoeing or kayaking. At LBL's Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory, visitors can sit under the stars while discovering the universe. The planetarium creates a unique and fun adventurous learning experience. In addition, guests can discover life on a 19th Century farm by visiting The Homeplace. Visitors take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, farm buildings and even interact with the interpreters. LBL is working to carefully restore a habitat lost more than a century ago with the Elk and Bison Prairie. The animals freely roam within a 700-acre enclosure. Guests can enjoy the area while driving the 3.5 mile loop road. There are three interpretive stops along the route to learn a little more about the prairie

For hunters, there are more than 250 days of hunting seasons in the area. Kentucky is regularly featured as one of the top five states for record-book deer. Kentucky's conventional gun, muzzle-loading and bow seasons host opportunities to discover a deer herd that is increasing in both numbers and size. With 2,064 miles of shoreline, Kentucky Lake is perfect for boating. Boat rentals are available for everything from pontoons to house boats. Water sports from skiing to paddle boarding are also a common sight on the lake. Whether you prefer to be on the water or discovering the land next to it, the lakes area is the top spot in Kentucky!

A

s a college town, there is no shortage of apartments and houses for rent in Murray. Renting or leasing is not just for students, however. Many new citizens, temporary residents and young families find renting or leasing to be their best option. Yet, all renters should amply research and prepare before signing on the dotted line.

Other areas that tend to consist of a majority of apartments are neighborhoods on or near 16th Street or Bailey Road. An array of apartments can also be found on Diuguid Drive, Northwood Drive and Southwood Drive. Other than these neighborhoods, houses and apartments for rent or lease are available individually throughout the town.

Many potential renters are curious to know which neighborhoods are predominantly students. As you may suspect, the closer to campus the more likely the area is to be student dominated. Campus Evolution Villages (CEV) is student-only housing, with two different complexes on 16th Street. The apartments are furnished and all utilities (up to a certain allowance) are included in the rent cost. The complexes are home to amenities like a pool, fitness center, grills, billiards, volleyball court, game room and more.

One big advantage of living in Murray is the city's low cost of living. Rental prices range greatly depending on home/apartment size and amenities. The median gross rent price in 2012 was $536, according to city-data.com.

1. Visit the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce for a rent list, which includes a complete listing of rental properties available for only $3. 2. When touring the apartment, pay close attention to details. Make sure all appliances work and check for the amenities most important to you, items like closet space or a garbage disposal. 3. Pay attention to extra costs separate from the rent. Are any utilities included? Is there a security deposit? Is the place furnished with a washer and dryer? Be sure to budget for deposits on water and electricity as well.

4. Be prepared to provide the landlord with references or to allow him or her to check your credit report. This is not a frequent request, but some home/apartment owners require it. 5. Contact other tenants who have the same landlord to find out how timely repairs are made. 6. If you don't understand the lease, consult a real estate agent before signing it. Pay close attention to the details of the contract for items like pet allowances, who is responsible for repairs, and the duration of the lease. 7. ALWAYS purchase renter's insurance. Do not assume that the landlord's insurance policy will cover your belongings in the event of a fire or other occurrence.
