Estate Manager We wish you a very prosperous 2020. As we head into a new decade, may all your dreams be fulfilled.

Please diarise all our events for the coming year and support us by attending when possible. Please refer to page 30 Electricity: Update on NIVS Substation Nellmapius to Heritage Hill 600m cable replacement project: A 600 m cable was installed end of January. The cable will be energised and take load once 500mm backfilling is completed along the cable route.

The overall project (including backfilling and the installation of the cable theft deterrent in the trench) has been completed on Friday the 31st of January. The cable is live and switch-on is expected to happen during this first week of February.

The energisation of this cable will create a secure alternative supply to the area to stabilise the supply of electricity.

Generators: With the above in mind, many residents resort to generators and rightfully so. There is, however a very dangerous side to the use of generators if they are simply connected to the electrical installation of your house. If this connection isn’t done correctly, it could mean a fatal injury. It is therefore our recommendation that your generator be connected to your house by a qualified electrician.

Please note: should you do the installation by yourself and anything goes wrong, you could be held accountable.

Generators should not be left in garages as the fumes are dangerous to house members or even your neighbours.

Water: We are extremely grateful for the lovely rainfall experienced during the beginning of December. We measured 250 mm on the dot. According to Rand Water, the Vaal dam’s level is still low (29 January measured 57.2 %). We urge residents to use water sparingly. Kindly remind your gardeners not to use garden hoses to wash down driveways and cars. We are

Stand 1114 Clubhouse development: We are now reaching the final stages of preparation and should be ready to start with the building of our clubhouse soon.

At the end of January, the developer submitted a concept plan for the HOA to review and finalise. The subdivision process is also at an advanced stage and we hope to receive those documents soon. This will register 60% of the stand in favour of the HOA and the balance of 40% in favour of the developer. As soon as this is finalised, the services installation will immediately commence, and the building work can start.

Pets During the recent December holidays, we once again received complaints about pets being left home unattended. This remains one of our biggest challenges. We plan to engage in street and community meetings with both pet owners and residents who do not own pets. We aim to find a happy medium both parties can agree to in order to accommodate all parties. Neither pet owners nor residents who do not own pets, can claim exclusive rights.

Trailers: I would like to remind our residents again, that no trailers or caravans are to be left out on the street verge overnight, without written permission from the HOA. An email, requesting permission can be sent to fred@heritage-hill.co.za.

Fireworks: We received a number of complaints regarding fireworks that were ignited within the Estate. Please note that the igniting of fireworks is not allowed in the Estate, as per the Estate Rules.

It is also in direct contravention of Tshwane’s bylaws and could mean a steep fine. Please adhere to all Estate Rules, at all times.

Domestic registrations: Please do not forget to re-register your domestics at the security office to avoid disappointment when arriving at the gate. Their biometric profile will then be active until 31 December 2020.

Kindly remember to inform us immediately if you terminate your domestic helper/gardener’s employment during the year.

Fishing at the dam: It was brought to our attention that some residents have encouraged their children to bring fish from other areas and dams, to add into our dam.

How to get rid of yellow spots

During summer yellow dry spots are very common on lawns across the country. In Gauteng, we are particularly stumped by the phenomenon because of the good rain showers we’ve had. The truth is these yellow patches can be caused by a number of things, not just drought, and in order to offer the right treatment the cause has to be identified first.

Nutrient imbalances Too much or too little nutrients can lead to nutrient imbalances in lawns, the most common being nitrogen and iron. Imbalances of both these nutrients can lead to yellow spots on lawns, which makes it difficult to identify the problem. Test your soil with a soil tester to find the culprit and rectify the imbalance.

Dog urine Dog urine is nitrogen-rich and could cause yellow spots on your lawn. Yellow spots that are lush green on the outer edges are often due to dog urine as the outer edges contain a more balanced nitrogen level and are therefore “happy”. Chemical burn The use of insecticides or fertilisers can cause a chemical burn on your lawn if not applied in the correct dosages or in the correct conditions.

Practice caution and always choose natural and organic insecticides and fertilisers.

Pests Sometimes finding the problem requires closer examination of the grass roots. Spot any insects there? Various types of insects and/or their larvae feast on grass roots causing damage in patches.

Treat with a natural organic insecticide.

Maintenance

Once you’ve successfully treated the cause of these spots, some maintenance care and a whole lot of patience is required to get your lawn looking lush again.

Mower: Make sure you lawnmower blades are sharp. This will cut grass cleanly helping them to recover better.

Aerate: Aerate your lawn to ensure that enough water, air and nutrients can get to the roots of your lawn. This will encourage strong and deep root formation.

Rake: Dead leaves and grass are a breeding ground for pests and diseases. Rake frequently.

Install a bird bath A bird bath is the final piece to the puzzle.

Install one in quiet area in your garden. Seedeating birds need access to clean, fresh water and most birds enjoy a daily or weekly bath. To prevent a bird bath from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes, you have to replace water every few days and wash the bird bath every week.

Birds are nature’s own little “landscapers”. They pollinate plants, control bugs and reduce weeds by eating the seeds before they sprout.

They are a must for every garden.

Simple, small changes to decorating your way towards a greener living room

If turning your home into a greener, more sustainable building is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, we are here to help. We’ll be sharing some great tips and ideas this year to help you reach this goal one room at a time.

People are buying less “things” and instead investing in quality pieces, made from materials that have been sustainably-sourced and built to last. 2. Use eco-friendly paint Most paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are chemicals that impact the air we breathe. Choose eco-friendly, zero VOC paints to paint your living room walls or leave a wall natural/exposed. This is another trend that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Kids Market, Wednesday 11 December 2019 Kids serving kids is the motto of our Kids Market. We take our hats off to the kids who took part in our annual kids market after it has been postponed twice due to the lovely rain we had early December. R 1 250.00 was raised for the 2020 Stationery Drive to assist the children from Engedi Preschool, Pikanini Wolmer Educare and Rachel de Beer Primary with much needed stationery.

A big thank you to Nicole from Bounce who spoilt our kids with 15 Bounce tickets which was handed out in a lucky draw.
