

Gabrielle McFarlane
My name is Gabrielle, but I have people call me Bri because why not! I go to Swarthmore College and am a rising Junior. I’m a Neuroscience major with a Biology minor ( ), with the goal of being a researcher towards Neurological, Psychological, Anatomical, and Physiological aspects of the human body! With that said, I hope to use this program to gain insight towards what it means to really do research in a wet lab, and to use this knowledge to solidify what I want to do in the future. Some fun facts about me include that I love cats, Sporacle (iykyk), watching niche Minecraft videos, riding bicycles, listening to instrumentals, taking candid photos on my phone, and learning how to take care of my hair and skin. Ella Harshyne
My name is Ella Harshyne. I am a rising sophomore at the University of South Carolina. I am majoring in computer science with a minor in statistics. My goal for this program is to deepen my understanding of cancer research, expand my skills in data science, and build meaningful connections with professionals and peers in the field!! Some fun facts about me are that I ran track, sprints and hurdles, in high school and am currently on my schools club track team and love it! I am also in greek life at my school and love going to the gym, coffee, my 3 cats, playing spike ball, and going on hikes with my friends.

Umme Orthy
My name is Umme Orthy. I am a rising senior at Haverford College where I am majoring in neurosciences with a minor in health studies. I am interested in cancer research and worked to set up a chapter of the American Cancer Society at Haverford. My goal for this program is to deepen my understanding of healthcare quality, particularly in cancer care, through the research I will be conducting, while also enhancing my professional development skills. A fun fact is that I am a henna artist!

Daud Tariq
My name is Daud Tariq (he/him), and I am a Premedical Studies Major at Thomas Jefferson University. I am currently entering my junior year, and conduct soil research on campus. I hope to better my skills when it comes to actual clinical research, as well as collaborate with everyone to better understand the nature of the field. I love music and am a violinist with both Jefferson's Chamber Orchestra and Penn Med Symphony Orchestra (PMSO). I also enjoy reading and hiking. My name is Sophia Kral, and I am a rising sophomore at Swarthmore College. I plan to major in Neuroscience and minor in Engineering while on the pre-medical track. Some fun facts about me are that I grew up moving roughly every three years and have lived in Korea, Mongolia, Australia, Japan, and the US. I have spent the most time in Japan, where I have family, so I call it home. In addition to traveling, I also really enjoy playing soccer and spending time outdoors. My goals for this experience are to gain exposure to medical research and explore possible career paths in the field. I hope to learn a lot more about cancer treatments and apply what I have learned so far in school. Ultimately, I would love to contribute to making a positive difference.

My name is Adriana Pagán Hernández, I’m from Puerto Rico and I love to dance. I’m a rising senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biosignals and Biosystems at the University of Rochester. I’m excited to learn more about breast cancer research, gain hands-on experience with experimental techniques, and apply my engineering tools to understand the biology behind breast cancer. I’m really looking forward to learning from my mentor and peers during this summer.

My name is Desiree Franco, and I am about to start my sophomore year at American University in Washington, D.C. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and I'm looking to major in Public Health so that in the future, I could be a part of the people who address and alleviate the systemic issues faced in communities like North Philadelphia. I think this internship will give me some more insight into what that goal could look like when considering the research aspect of health.
