St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today’s most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly. St. Jude researchers are published and cited more often in high impact publications than any other private pediatric oncology research institution in America. St. Jude is a place where many doctors send some of their sickest patients and toughest cases. A place where cutting-edge research and revolutionary discoveries happen every day. We’ve built America’s second-largest health-care charity so the science never stops.
All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family’s ability to pay.

CONSTANCEMARIA SYLVIA BLAIZE-SHORTER
One of my greatest accomplishments is marrying the man of my dreams, Joseph W. Shorter III, and giving birth to our beloved Son, Blaize W. Shorter. I truly thank God for blessing me with a family who inspires me to do my very best in all aspects of my life. I can truly say that I love the life of being a mother and wife and look forward to the unpredictable journey that God has already carved out for us. Apart from being a wife and mother, dancing, choreography, writing, and philanthropic work are interest that also defines who I am. I have been dancing for over 25 years and have written, directed and produced several theatrical dance productions for my Dance School, BLAIZE Dance Productions. Although I have yet to tap into my gift of the writing, the work that I have done, thus far, has brought great joy to those around me. People are always saying – “You missed your calling”. Well, I am in the process of answering that call! I plan on releasing a series of children’s books by 2011. And after I accomplish this dream, the sky is the limit for this author. Anyone can say that they are philanthropic. But I know now that this is truly a part of who I am. Before I even knew that the word philanthropist existed, my internal compass always lead me to encourage others and try my best to assist people in the process of realizing and reaching their full potential. One of the definitions of a Philanthropist is, a person who has love for all humanity: general love for, or benevolence toward, the whole of humankind. “That is me.” Although I have been engaged philanthropic work by doing things such as, donating my time as a youth leader in my former church for 15 years and opening a dance school for men and women ages 2-17, starting my non-profit organization, Butterfly Ballerinas, Inc in 2010 has given me a greater appreciation for community. We truly need others in this world to make great things happen. This is what I am currently experiencing as President of BB Inc. On a lighter note, I am a silly girl. I love to laugh, play jokes on folks, devour Starbucks, eat chocolate, fruits, and watch CNN and HGTV all day long. I really enjoy spending time with my parents, stepfather, stepdaughter, sister and brother-in law, nephews and baby brother whenever possible. I reach out to cousins, aunts and uncles as well. Having a tight family unit is important as these are the people that God has chosen as your blood relatives. I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, auntie, Christian, cousin, mentor, speaker, teacher, dancer, choreographer, and..Oh yeah…a rapper. I am a woman who is a work in progress and seek to find the path and understand the processes God designed specifically for me. I am just like you!. A woman blessed beyond comprehension -just trying to make it one day at a time.

FAMILY MOMMENTS
Auntie Aggie Hi Connie & Joe, You are so o o o blessed with Blaize for your son. Yes, Connie, I can just see you melting as you ponder the Mystery of your two (2) men God has blessed you with. Sorry I’m not there in person, but you know I’m always there in spirit. Did you get my greetings the 1st day when the Birth Announcement went out, and responses were made in his “Diary” I think. Beautiful Pictures!!!! Keep them coming!!. Hope Mother’s Day on the Town was great for you both, and Blaize enjoyed his first night away from Home. ( Did you know Connie that the name you gave your son, was the name your grandma (Mom) always called your Grand-dad (Dad) by, and also referred to him in that way always? When she didn’t say “Daddy”, it was always “Blaize”. So we have come full circle. I hope you are not out working as yet. You need at least 3 - 4 monts doing nothing, but looking after Blaize, While Joe looks after both of you. I’m so o o o o Happy for you. Take Care, Love to all. I’ll Print and frame the pictures. He is too oo oo oo oo tweet!!! Lots of Love, Blessings, Hugs, Kisses to all of you.

Good Morning Auntie! Glad to hear from you. Yes, we received your kind words in our guestbook. Thank you for always praying for us. The story of Grandma calling Grandpa Blaize is wonderful to hear. I have a few friends that used to call me Blaize (in New York and Tampa). In addition, I facilitated a dance workshop at a Spanish church and they called me Blaize all the time. So... the name definitely came full circle.
Auntie Roz
I am taking care of Blaize and myself. And Joe takes care of both of us. I am actually heading back out to work shortly. June 7th is my return. I will take it slow. I have a follow up appointment soon, and the doctor will let me know how I am doing. I will continue to take care of my body Auntie. I realize that it has to heal. Aunt Roz’s visit was so needed. She came to assist my family and we truly appreciate it. She is missed at the Shorter household. She cooked for us and was an invaluable support. We are blessed to have family that goes above and beyond the cause. Thanks to Aunt Roz, Aunt Jo and you, you guys have been here for us during some key moments in our life. Will talk with you soon, love you!!! Connie

Joseph William Shorter III Husband I am married to Constancemaria Sylvia Blaize-Shorter, my best friend and wife. I never thought I would get married again and we certainly didn’t think that we would take the plunge together! Just a couple of hard headed friends who one day fell in love.
Father While Blaize is Connie’s first, he isn’t my only child. In fact, Blaize has an older brother Branden and an older sister Jasmine. Technology is such these days that we could create a digital on-line magazine chronicling his first year and I must say it is pretty cool. Now that I know how to do this, there is no telling how far it will go now so stay tuned!
Technologist
Yes, it is a real word :). This is just a simple way of saying, “I am a Geek!” I started writing code at the age of eleven (11) and ever since I figured out that I could give a computer instructions and it would execute them and tell me about it. So, although I avoided this as a career for a while, it was a fore gone conclusion. I am now working at the world’s largest firm services organization as a technology advisor - go figure!

Poet
I have written many poems over the years and even have one published called, “The Gift”. In this article, you can see my poetic side from the poem - “Legends”. I am most known for the poem, “So You Want a Black Man?”
Many Talents
Artist
Author Who is addressing the African American condition? In RAAW: Rediscovering African American Wisdom, Shorter approaches common issues found in most American families, but he specifically focuses on African Americans and how they have contributed to society at large. He does not intend his questions to cause an explosion of rebirth, but rather to begin a process of self-reflection and understanding by peeling back the layers of the everyday humdrum. Shorter also addresses the feelings of victimization in the African American community, pointing out that remaining a victim to circumstances is a choice and that black society has the power within to do something about it. Because many African Americans blame their state of existence on every outside force possible, Shorter believes that it is imperative for them to take responsibility to facilitate awareness. Through the use of anecdotes, poems, quotes, and quizzes, Shorter creates a highly readable discussion on the African American experience. RAAW presents a compelling argument for change within the black community.

2 MONTHS Well as you can see, our baby boy is now 2 months I Man, time does indeed go by quickly Blaize has developed a lot of social skills at this age. He touches our faces, smiles a lot, talks to us (in his language of course), and stares you down as if you have just committed a crime! Auntie Roz says that Blaize is an “old soul”, due to his intense nature. We agree, with this statement. On many occasions, we have watched him analyze us or an object such as, the sunlight, his bottle, and the likefor an extended period. It is fascinating to watch him compartmentalize persons, places or things in his brain. Even more exciting is when he recognizes something or someone that he may have Forgotten! It is said that if a baby is not shown an object repeatedly, they will forget it! This is very true. Although he knows his parents very well at this point, there are still times when his expressions
clearly communicate, “Who are you? Oh, your Mommy and Daddy.” Joe and I love it; we crack up all the time as we watch his little inquisitive eyebrows rise and fall when he identifies that which he is familiar with. He is indeed our little thinking man. Connie
CONVERSATIONS Connie: Hello Family and treasured friends. Here is a sneak peak at our little boy and the individuals who are molding and shaping his life. Happy Belated Father’s Day to all of the Father’s. Auntie Roz: Wow... He is a BIG BOY !!!!! BLESSINGS TO ALL !!!! So happy to hear that Uncle Henry is back home. What great news to hear that there will be a replay of the production. I told Buf I am praying that it travels out of Florida. Great idea to have it on UTube. Please send me the dimensions of the hanging. The Festival starts on Thursday, so I’ll be browsing.. Love to all.... Connie: Yes, my Son is definitely growing into a big “little” boy.Very alert and active. We are in school for a short period of the day learing numbers, letters, colors and other interesting things. Joe and I just talk to him all the time. As of the play, yes, I cannot wait. I will be dancing in it this time. And the U-Tube is a winner. My husband contributed that idea. :o} Anyway, as for the cloth, I need to measure again, I believe it is 3 by 5 feet (36 by 60 inches). Will measure again tonight. Glad you reminded me. Love you, getting ready for my Junior Ballet class Connie: Oh Aunt Roz! The package came today and the cloth is beautiful. Is smells like Africa....:o) The material has a unique smell. Okay...off to teach class. Here is a picture of your little boy, Blaize William Shorter.

Message from Blaize Hi everyone! A lot has been happening- so let me just give you the highlights. On my last doctor’s visit my weight was 10ibs 14 ounces. Update (I am now 111bs 14 ounces). I am getting real heavy. Just ask my Mommy. She visits the chiropractor on a bi-weekly basis. Mom just turned 39 years old on May 29th. We had a real cool Father’s Day at Auntie Anne’s house. I finally met my Uncle Henry! I gave my Daddy a lot of cards to show him how much I love him. Mommy even helped me make a card for Daddy. My Oma loves to spend time with me. That’s us sleeping on the floor after our Father’s day supper. Oh yeah.... I love when my cousin Anthony holds me and rocks me. And when my cousin Jonathan sings to me!

3 MONTHS Well am now three months old and my Mommy says that I am moving really fast! Guess what? I started teething already! How is that for progression? As you can see, I am ready to go outside and play Pa lest So bring it on. I drool a lot, touch my Dad and Mom’s face, pull Mommy’s hair for fun, laugh real loud when you tickle under my arms, neck and around my belly button, and I have almost mastered the word “Hi” The month of July and August has been busy for me My Big Sister Jasmine is visiting from Houston She really loves me. I smile a lot when she talks to me, dance for me, and feed me. Sometimes, she even rocks me to sleep. I met my Grandma Laura for the first time. I was crying when she picked me up, but she did not mind, she just rocked me and comforted me. I also met my girl cousin, Samantha
she is now three years old. I also met Oma’s best friend, Auntie Evie, we surprised her with our visit. In addition, I met my uncle Sonnie, uncle Ryan, and cousin Caleb. My Uncle Ryan thinks that I am cool; he pinches my cheeks as light as a feather and rubs my head. The first time was a bit rough, but he has gotten better at it. I will be turning 4 months in August, so we will talk again soon! Ba Bal

There is a moment in a man’s life when he sees it ending and he looks to what he has left behind. What he sees begins to define and shape his legacy. In those few moments, the totality of his life flashes like an open book in his mind as he begins to contemplate what impact he made on the world. As men, achieve great things, we make many mistakes, we have many regrets, but we also create miracles of life. When a Father looks at his son and he understands the true meaning of love. So too does a Grandfather look upon his grandson with a renewed love; He knows that the twilight brings a new day and we have an opportunity to live again making a difference in a world that we hand over to better versions of ourselves. We must never forget , that even with all of our gifts, our flaws, our laughter, and our tears - we are Legends. By: Joseph W. Shorter III

Mommy’s Perspective
Blaize has truly enhanced our lives and we are so blessed to have such a robust child this little baby keeps us on our toes! We strive every day to be the kind of parents that he would be proud of. We do this by going about the things that God has called us to do Simply said, we live our lives day to day, work hard, set new goals (individually and as a family), take care of ourselves (mentally, physically and spiritually), and love on him every chance that we get. As a new Mommy, I am challenged to think out of the box every morning that I rise and see this “sun shine” boy looking up at me. What l mean is that babies bring a spirit of newness, and as they are figuring things out for themselves, at the same time, you are also trying to figure out the best way to care for them. Life is not so predictable anymore and your points of references are now being revised to fit the needs of your child who by the way is very much an individual. If I had to give advice to a woman who is about to become a new Mom, I would say, listen to the suggestions given to you by family and friends who have children However, keep in mind that your baby is unique and he or she will create a new dynamic that requires new responses that only God can help you to meet, and God will definitely do that. I believe that this is what our ancestors referred to as “Mother Wit” which is essentially sound judgment given by God (smile). Having said all of that, it takes a whole village to raise a child, and we would like to thank all of our family and friends for your prayers, support and active participation in Blaize’s life. In addition, I want to thank my Hubby who is extremely supportive and takes care of Blaize as well as I do. There are a lot of men today that leave the raising of children to the Mom’s, but not my Babe Joe is actively involved and I really could not see me raising any babies without him at my side, “Thank you Honey, You are the best!” Connie

5 MONTHS Hello I am now 5 months old today! My Mommy has been really busy, hence the delay on my 4th month newsletter. But as you can see, I survived the tough 4 month milestone. It was tough I said! My teeth really started to come in, milk (Enfamil) got real boring, I fight like the dickens to go to bed, and let’s not talk about those shots from my pediatrician. Needles in my chuncky thighs… Whaaaaah! “It isn’t easy being a baby!” Now that I am 5 months and approximately 16-17 lbs, I feel a little more independent. I will be walking soon! Seriously - I don’t have the crawl thing down yet, but a lot of times I cry to jump off of Mommy and Daddy’s lap so that I can get to the ground. “They don’t know it yet, but I will be walking by 8 months.” Anyway, these are the things that I do well: Say Hi and the sound the letter “B” makes, grab things and put them in my mouth, pull Mom’s and Oma’s hair, eat baby food (carrots, sweet potatoes, green peas, squash, banana, and rice cereal) try to drink from a cup, hold the spoon

CONVERSATIONS
Hi Blaize, My Little Chunzie, I soooo love your very very very interesting Newsletters. You are doing real great!!! You seem so busy that you really out-do your great-auntie Aggie. You turn me dizzy with all those things you are up to. And Eating Out to boot!! Aunt Aggie is off to Turkey tomorrow. I am not excited as yet. Too many things to put in order before I leave. I haven’t even started packing yet. You and Mom and Dad look so happy in the photo at Oma’s Retirement Party. You have a great Mom and Dad who love you to death!!!. You are so Lucky!! I’ll be thinking of you and praying for you ( in fact for the whole extended family). This trip is called a “Pilgrimage” so we do a lot of Praying and offering of Sacrifices ( that is liking and
tolerating things/situations/people that are really not nice, painful, hurtful, or I don’t like - all for the Glory of God. This way God send many graces to those persons we pray for while on the “Pilgrimage”. Of Course we get to see some Fantastic places in the process. Will let you see my pictures when I get back. I saw Oma before she went off to Canada with your new Opa. Can’t wait til December to hold you in my own, own, own arms. Be sweet to yourself and Mom and Dad til next time. You are growing great!!! I think you are now looking like your own self ( Not like Mom or Dad) Hope I’m correct, sometimes you can’t see well in the photos. Love Ya Lots and lots and lots!!! Many Many Many Blessings!!!

Six months was truly a milestone for me. And a BIG surprise for Mom and Dad (smile). Although I have been very active from birth, I became extremely mobile in ways that a 6 month old really should not be able to achieve as of yet. But you know me, I kicked Mom in-utero since 4 months! I developed the following skills, rolling over, eating cereal, trying to form the letter B and M, eating a variety of foods (sweet potato, string beans, apples, and bananas), I can sit up by myself, I am extremely alert and can spot Mom and Dad a mile away, my bed time is 10pm (but I fight like the dickens to go to bed), and I love to eat cereal (rice, wheat and grains). Oh, I have two teeth on the bottom. My Auntie Ann calls me two-teeth. I am actually handling teething real well. I am a little irritated at times, but for the most part, I just grab Dad or Mom’s finger and bite the heck out of them (smile). “They really love me”. Oh yeah, I went to my very first costume party. My outfit truly says a lot about my personality. By the way, I am creeping really fast and trying to stand up on my own, I even try to walk along the couch after pulling up. Impressive huh?

Jay and Anthony
Seven months only got better for me as I perfected my creep to a crawl and I now pull up on everything that is in my way. I love to walk along the couch and ottoman in the family room. My favorites things to do is play peek-a boo with my parents, yell really loud so that I can be heard, laugh from my belly when I am tickled, talk on the telephone, beat on every object, and more big boy stuff that I have been dreaming of doing. Two of my favorite shows is Yo Gabba Gabba and the Backyardigans (they are on the Nick channel). I watch it with Mommy all the time. Sometimes, I go on to something else and she is still watching them without me! I love to read the book “What Am I”. It’s about animals and where they live. I also love to sing my ABC’s and One Two Buckle My Shoe. I think that I am going to like 7 months because I am really flexing my independent muscles. I have always made my request known, but I do now with more gusto! These are my Mom’s favorite words, “Blaize, I cannot believe that you are that same little baby” and Dad’s is “Babe, this little boy”. I know that Mom and Dad would agree that one of the funniest things that I do in my sleep is laugh and “crawl walk”. Yeah, crawl walk! One night, my eyes were wide shut and I started crawling in the bed. Yes! I sleep with Mom and Daddy. I love to sleep under Dad’s armpits. I think that I love to hear him snore. Most importantly, I feel safe laying next to him at nights. Yes...they put me in my crib sometimes, but Mommy does not get any sleep when that happens. I was told that she gets up every 5 minutes to make sure that I am breathing. “What a Mom...she crazy though”

Well I am 8 months now and feeling quite independent. Yes Siree! I am really beginning this “freedom journey” with gusto. What is a freedom journey? Glad you asked. I can do a lot of things without the support of my Dad and Mom’s arms. Like, pulling up , climbing, standing, walking along the couch and in my walker, holding my bottle, holding my spoon, sitting, playing with my toys, and much more. Some things Mom and Dad may see, others, they don’t. I am quick! If you blink, you may miss something. That’s why they call me Blaize. :o) One of the biggest changes that I made at 8 months is my ability to really interact with my parents and others. I remember faces and voices and respond accordingly. For example, when my Oma calls from Antigua, I know her voice and start to smile. And when my Opa comes to visit, I get quite excited because I know it’s time to play! And when my Auntie Ann says; “Booby!”, I get excited. Cause no one else says it like her. I am also getting attached to my parents. Sometimes I cry when Mom or Dad leaves the room. But when they return, I greet them with a great big welcome smile, jumping and a lot of babble. They love it and I love the hugs, kisses and tosses in the air that I receive from just being me!

My favorite television show now is Barney! I really like it. My cousins Anthony and Jonathan and my Sis, Jasmine, used to watch him when they were babies. Now I am just carrying on the tradition. My food variety is pretty much the same, however, I have added mixed flavors such as banana mixed with orange and banana, grape, plum. I still love my oatmeal and look forward to eating it. Boy do I sing and babble when that oatmeal is being prepared. I weigh approximately 19.5 lbs. Solid as a rock just like my parents. I got my muscles! What a great thing to inherit! Thanksgiving was exhausting for me! I visited my family on both Mom and Dad’s side. I met so many people. I became overwhelmed by “all those faces”. At one point I just squeezed my eyes tight, clenched my fist with my thumbs on the inside and let out a loud cry. Translation: “I love all you people, but I had enough.” My parents took me home shortly thereafter. (smile) I am going to Antigua for Christmas and New Years. I am sure that will be an adventure. I will have to dedicate an entire newsletter to document that trip. Am I ready for the trip? I don’t know—just a baby remember? Okay look at pics of me!

10, 11, 12 Oh My! Eleven months!
This is the age that I start “putting the petal to the metal” and test drive those Toddler tricks, traps and terrible tantrums (will explain all of this later). I am showing my independence now. Although I love company, I look forward to having down time of my own. I am capable of watching T.V. and playing with my toys all by myself.
Eating
In my last newsletter I talked about eating table scraps. Well that has not changed. I want to eat the food that my parents are eating. I am really picky now about what I eat and when I want to eat. Although I love my cereal, it just does not do it for me anymore. I still eat it when Mom prepares it. I take a couple of bites and then start reaching for the waffles on her plate. She prepares waffles for me now. What a great Mom. Daddy read that my eating is a bit fickle around this age. And that parents should not worry. Kids my age are just going through a change. We will eat when we are ready. So don’t worry too much Mommy. Since I am almost one year old, I have graduated to toddler foods now. They have pretty good stuff like dried apples, cookies, just to name a few. Finally, something with a little taste made just for me. Dad, will you taste a little of my baby food now that it taste more like your food?
Mom telling Dad. All I know is that my biting has increased and any object or person in the way is fair game. But Mom and Dad are helping me understand that biting people is not appropriate. They are pretty firm about it, but I try to do it anyway because I need RELIEF! Speaking of relief, those Pedialyte pops are helping my soar gums. Having said that, I get a treat and treatment at the same time.
Words
My vocabulary is interesting to say the least. The tones and inflections in my voice is really fascinating. I yell just for yelling, try to sing in high and low pitches like my Opa, scream in rooms that produce an echo, mimic what I hear on my favorite cartoons and other things that indicates that I am ready to use those ABC’s that Mom and Dad sing to me all the time. I have been saying up and down for quite some time now, but I make the connection when I see other people do this motion.
Bonding
I am very social like both my parents. I love company and do a good job of entertaining them with my activities and little boy charms. I love to laugh, play and get piggy back rides from my folks. Ok. Look at my pics! Mom does not mind though, she always obliges. Now for pics!
Teeth
Those Lateral incisors are still trying to break through. You can actually feel the teeth through the gums. At least that is what I hear

Cousin Jay wants to be just like me when he grows up!
I am ONE—Lot’s of Fun! Blaize W. Shorter is now 1 year old and we are so proud of this little mover and shaker. And boy does he literally move and shake things! God has answered our prayers and we celebrate this milestone in anticipation of many more to come. Mommy and Daddy love you Blaize. In the words of one of your favorite nursery rhymes— ”You are our a our only sunshine, you make us happy when skies are gray, you’ll never know Blaize how much we love you, please don’t take your sunshine away” Yaaay Blaize! My First Birthday party was really fun. These are the people who were there: My God Parents (Marc and Kim), my God Brother and Sister (MJ and DeDe), Opa, Auntie, Cousin Jonathan, Oma and Pa Les, and of course Mommy and Daddy! I was really happy that everyone came over for my Birthday. The room was decorated in Mickey stuff and balloons were all over the place. You know Mommy, she likes themed parties. My party was called Mickey’s Balloon Factory. When everyone started singing Happy Birthday, I began to cry. Sigh...folks still don’t understand that too much excitement can be a bit much for me. I had a smash cake. I was supposed to smash it, but I just poked it. I was wondering to myself: “What is this thing?”. It taste really good though. But I really wanted to ask Mommy and Daddy why everyone had on those triangles on their heads? I mean everyone!
I got a lot of gifts and cards from my guest. Mommy read the cards out loud. I did not even pretend like I was listening. I just wanted to grab those colorful pieces of cardboard that kept appearing in Mom’s hand. Mommy started crying when she read my cousin Jonathan’s card. Jonathan said that he is excited about being a good role model for me. “I am sure that Mommy is crying as she is typing this portion of the newsletter. Daddy calls her faucet—as in a water faucet.” Anyway, it was really great to feel all the love that was in the room. My God Brother and I, MJ (not short for Michael Jackson, but for Marc Junior) were dancing up a storm to Disney music and Mount Obama. Everything he would do, I would try to do. I was working the crowd and making my parents proud. My Auntie was cheering me on, so was Oma and Pa Les. We video taped it, so I am sure you can catch it on my website soon. Well that is it for now. Take a look at my pictures and I will speak with you again when I am 13 months. Oh..how could I forget. Pa Les’ Birthday is 4 days after mine and we surprised him with a cake. It was round like my little cake. But I did not see him smashing anything either!
