Acupuncture Can Be the Solution to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Expert Contribution by Morgan Reade, NJ Advanced Acupuncture

Most people’s jobs involve repetitive movements of the hands and wrists--for example typing for hours on a computer. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is caused by constant strain or pressure on the median nerve. Symptoms of CTS include tingling in the hands or wrists, sharp pain, numbness and decreased movement. This condition can take years to develop. Acupuncture is extremely effective at treating carpal tunnel syndrome, eliminating the need for anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery.

Recent studies suggest that acupuncture is more effective than corticosteroids when it comes to treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Acupuncture, an ancient technique of TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, has long been used to treat chronic pain. In acupuncture, fine needles are placed in specific points along the forearm, wrist and hand. Studies from Harvard Medical School suggested that all people in the study who were in pain from CTS experienced reduction of pain and numbness after acupuncture sessions. Applying suction cups, cold laser or massage are other techniques used to increase blood flow to the area, relieving pain and pressure.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms can also be reduced through the use of supportive splints. Custom splints are made in the office of NJAA and are covered under most insurance plans. Unlike the common splints found at local pharmacies, these are molded specifically to the patient’s wrist and hand. They are lighter and more comfortable making use easier for the person wearing them.

New Jersey Advanced Acupuncture can find the solution that is right for you. In addition to acupuncturists, NJAA employs a Certified Hand Therapist or CHT. A CHT is a licensed Occupational Therapist who through advanced study and experience, specializes in the rehabilitation of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. During their five extra years of study, they receive 4,000 hours of mentorship in the intricacies of the upper extremities. CHTs also have to pass a rigorous examination of advanced clinical skills and theory.

If you are suffering or are considering surgery, call NJAA first. You have nothing to lose-except CTS pain.
