FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS

Making college dreams come true one scholarship at a time

Money should not be the reason someone doesn’t go to college. This is a philosophy that is taken seriously at Northeast Texas Community College, and the Foundation is there to make sure it is true.

A non-profit corporation, the NTCC Foundation seeks and manages donations and grants that support the mission of the college. Scholarships are a major part of that mission. Each year hundreds of students are able to attend college thanks to an NTCC scholarship. “While the majority of NTCC students qualify for federal financial aid, there are still many who don’t. That’s where the Foundation comes into play,” Dr. Jonathan McCullough, NTCC Executive Vice President for Advancement, said. “Between private donations and grants, we are able to offer more than 400 scholarships to students each year. These range from a few hundred dollars to full rides.” Brian Ramirez (pictured on the cover of this magazine) is a current NTCC student and recipient of the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce Cinco de Mayo and James and Elizabeth Whatley Honors Foundation Scholarships. He graduated in the top 10% of his class at Mount Pleasant High School in 2020 and chose to start his college journey at NTCC. During his time at NTCC, Ramirez has participated in Honors Northeast, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association, the Eagle newspaper and more.

“NTCC has done the great job of introducing me to the college life. With the help of my foundation scholarships, I was able to completely pay my tuition and fees,” Ramirez said. “This has allowed me to devote the money I make at work to gas money and other school expenses like a laptop, books, etc.”

McCullough pointed out that most NTCC students do not fit the carefree, entitled stereotype of college students from generations past.

“Even students attending college directly out of high school are juggling lots of responsibilities like working to help support their families or taking care of children,” McCullough said. “We have had situations in the past where not having $100 to pay for a textbook was going to force a student to drop out of college. The foundation is here to step in and help in those situations.”

Hilda Rodriguez, who also graduated from MPHS in 2020, is another current scholarship recipient. She is a member of Honors Northeast, Psi Beta and Phi Theta Kappa.

“I knew there would be a financial obstacle to my decision to pursue higher education. So when opportunities for scholarships presented themselves, I applied to all of them, intending to relieve my parents of the pressure and keep my dream alive,” Rodriguez said.

The minimum amount to establish an annual scholarship at NTCC is just $500. Perpetual scholarships ($10,000 minimum) and Endowed scholarships ($25,000) are

one-time gifts that provide scholarships out of investment earnings. This allows them to continue to benefit students as long as the college exists. “I think there is a misconception out there about how much impact even smaller gifts can make. Many Brian Ramirez, Sophomore people send small gifts in lieu of flowers at memorial services,” Nita May, NTCC Director of Development, said. Anytime a gift is given in someone’s honor or memory, the person being honored or their family receives a personal acknowledgement from the foundation informing them of the donation. “Working for the Foundation is very personally rewarding for me, because I get to know many of the scholarship recipients personally and watch them excel in college and then move on to successful, productive lives,” McCullough said. “Some people may say the ‘American Dream’ is dead, but I can attest that it is very much alive at NTCC. Our students are proof of that.” To learn more about the NTCC Foundation and scholarships, visit www.ntcc. edu/foundation. You can also contact McCullough at 903-434-8115 or jmcculough@ntcc.edu.
