Troop 46 graduates flock of Eagle Scouts

Music to Winnetka’s ears

pproximately four percent of boys who become Scouts ever reach the organization’s highest grade—Eagle Scout. For Lake Forest Boy Scout Troop 46 the number is 100 percent for those who will graduate high school this year. All 17 Eagle Scouts from Troop 46 who are part of the Class of 2017 gathered at the Lake Forest Beach June 1 to reminisce about their time in Scouting and talk about their friendship. Richard Walther, Scoutmaster for Troop 46, said the number of young men who become Eagle Scouts is four percent nationally, but it has been higher in Lake Forest. He said 11 Eagles were awarded in 2014 and 13 in 2007. Walther, the parents and Scouts all credit each other for the success, but the common thread from all of them is friendship. For some of the Eagle Scouts such as John Zeeman, Continued on PG 12

Weekend festival to showcase wide range of talent BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

Q

uiet Winnetka will be transformed into a hip music hub on June 23 and 24 when the village hosts its first

ever music festival, including a full range of talent by emerging artists. And did we mention that it’s free? “My goal was to bring a lineup with something for everyone — every music taste. It’s meant to be a showcase,” said Val Haller, a Winnetka resident, owner of the music website Valslist.com, and one of the event founders. The Winnetka Music Festival includes popular local acts as well as artists who have toured all over the country. It will kick off on

Friday night with performances by Will Tilson, a teenage blues and soul artist who got his start in Wilmette, and by The Accidentals, an indie-folk-rock band from Traverse City, Michigan. “My main goal is to introduce the newest music to busy adults who don’t have time to find it on their own,” Haller explained. She carefully curated the music festival lineup to include emerging artists from many genres. Indie rock band Wild Belle, which has performed at

Lollapalooza, on The Tonight Show and across the country, will be the closing act of the festival. “I have been to many boutique festivals, and it is a great way to get non-music goers to go see live music,” Haller noted. Haller thinks music festivals are the ideal, casual environments to find your next favorite band. “It’s a way to taste a whole lot of things in a very short amount of time,” she said. And there will be plenty to taste besides the music. Food

trucks will be parked throughout the festival, and craft beer and wine will be available to purchase. The event was the brainchild of Scott Myers, a Winnetka resident, village trustee and organizer of the event. Myers came up with the idea while attending a concert hosted by Haller. As a trustee, Myers had received feedback from residents that they were interested in more community Continued on PG 12

I truly cannot put into words how great our experience was working with Cory Albiani to find our new home. He listened closely to what we were looking for in an ideal home, and he only showed us properties that met our requirements... and more importantly, our budget! Cory is a consummate professional, but also brings a nice, calm and easy demeanor to what could normally be a stressful home buying/selling process. Hands down, we would recommend Cory Albiani to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the suburbs or downtown. - Douglas Baker

Forest Open Lands to refurbishing a clubroom at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lake County in Waukegan, according to information from the Northeast Illinois Council of the Boy Scouts provided by Martha Zeeman. She said there were 2,626 service hours generated on the 17 efforts. The first Scout to complete his project was Peter Crawford. He finished building a heated shelter for an abused alligator at the Wildlife Discovery Center early in his junior year of high school on November 14, 2015. Crawford, who will study at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in the fall, said he works at the center and wants to make a career in wildlife biology. The center took in the alligator after it was found in a home in bad shape. He got help building the shelter from John Zeeman, Oakley and Van Staunton. Staunton, who plans to attend New York University, said his project was building a 55-foot boardwalk over a marsh at Lake

Forest Open Lands. Much of the wood came from ash trees killed in the preserve by the emerald ash borer beetle. “I always liked spending time there,” said Staunton. “I asked them what I could do to help and they told me about the need for the boardwalk. I cut all the wood from the dead trees so they didn’t have to haul them away. It was good for the environment, it was good for Open Lands and it was good for me because I didn’t have to buy the wood.” Crawford said he pitched in on Staunton’s project. He helped cut the wood and lay some of the planks in the marsh. “We got really muddy,” said Crawford. The other Eagle Scouts in the group are Matthew Barrett, Alec Brandel, Ryan Burger, Connor Clemmensen, Kevin Donohue, Michael Finnegan, Jack Lazarus, Connor Lewis, Brennan Long, Austin McGreevy, Mark Rinalo, Edward Mordini and Matthew Musacchio.

Elm Street business district,” Myers said. “It’s turned into a bigger event than we ever thought. We are so excited,” Haller noted. In addition to on-stage performances, the Winnetka Music Festival will also feature street buskers from local schools. These young musicians will perform throughout Saturday afternoon. “It is an opportunity for the youth of our community to be a part of something that is of a high quality and gives them a chance to display their talents,” Myer said. The festival organizers are aware of their audience on the North Shore and were sure to

include a family stage, where a full lineup of musicians will perform. “We take our family stage very seriously because we are a community with young families,” Haller said. Manny Torres and Ethan Butler, both of television fame — Torres was on American Idol and Butler starred on The Voice — may inspire some young, aspiring musicians. The Music Institute of Chicago will host an instrument petting zoo, allowing kids to sample any instrument that might be of interest. Myers envisions the music festival as a way to bring Winnetka residents together, but also

as a way to encourage more people to visit the village and discover all it has to offer. “Winnetka can enhance its reputation to be a quality place that offers great things to its residents and is doing innovative things,” Myers said. The festival will go on rain or shine — all of the stages are covered, given Chicago’s unpredictable June weather. But the organizers remain optimistic. “I am really excited about this event. I think it will be a great addition to our town,” Haller said.

The village and Winnetka Park District contributed some funds toward the event, but a committee comprising 15 residents has spent the past year organizing, raising money and getting sponsors. The event became bigger than originally envisioned. “What started out as an idea of a couple of different stages has grown to four stages across the

Try Kip’s Choice at Bangkok Tokyo BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

A

rriving in Lake Bluff with her family nine years ago, Pasinee Sangsawang did not see any Thai or Japanese restaurants in the area, but she had an instinct people would love both cuisines. A native of Thailand, Sangsawang liked the taste and healthy quality of her country’s food. She also traveled regularly to Japan and became enthralled with sushi and other elements of that country’s cuisine. It did not take long after arriving in the village before Sangsawang organized the resources to open Bangkok Tokyo in the Lake Bluff shopping center on the southeast corner of Waukegan Road and Highway 176, which she still manages today. “We loved the area,” said Sangsawang, known to most people at the restaurant simply as Kip. “We loved the schools, the parks. The kids liked the schools. I knew if we opened a restaurant people would like the food.” Sangsawang said most people in Thailand call each other by nicknames. “My teacher called me Pasinee Sangsawang, but to everyone else

“We want to give people a chance to try our food and give them a choice,” said Sangsawang. “A lot of people come in and try our happy hour. Then they become our customers and our friends. Everybody knows everybody.” When DailyNorthShore.com asked Sangsawang to choose an ideal dinner for four of Thai food and another of Japanese, she did not hesitate. For Thai, she picked variety to let people experience all the flavors that go into the dishes. For Kip’s choice for a Thai meal for four, Sangsawang said she will bring Chicken Satay, Crab Rangoon and Coconut Shrimp, which is homemade, from the kitchen as appetizers. “We take fresh shrimp and devein it, put it in a light batter and dip it in tempura mix” said Sangsawang. “We add some coconut flakes and deep fry it. We season it with mango and orange.” From left, B’anhan Lim (Poh), Pasinee Sangsawang (Kip) and Chaleleaphan Weeraphan (Cheer) at Chicken Satay is added Bangkok Tokyo in Lake Bluff. It is a noodle offering, another staple of Southeast Asian food. The flavoring is what makes it unique. “We can make it a little spicy on request,” said Sangsawang. “Then you have sweet, sour, salt and spice—every flavor in one dish.” When it comes to a Japanese selection, Sangsawang said it would contain a lot of raw fish going back to her love for sushi. She said she would have the chef get creative with combinations of sashimi, sushi and maki. For people who want a sampling of variety they can order a Bento Box. Sangsawang said it puts a number of choices on a plate, which can be Thai, Japanese or a combination of both. She said they are popular for carry out orders. Bangkok Tokyo is located at 227 Waukegan Road in Lake Bluff. For more information visit bangkoktokyolakebluff.com or call 847-295-7811.

Dwyer tallies seven goals as powerful Ramblers continue to their reign on girls state lacrosse BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

T

wo lacrosse sticks launched a ball straight up at Lakeside Field on Northwestern University’s campus last weekend. The face-off in the first half of the Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association state championship game had suddenly turned into a jump ball on June 2. One of the sticks belonged to Loyola Academy senior middie Brennan Dwyer, who camped under the ball like an outfielder would. As soon as the ball nestled in the nylon pocket of her weapon of mass production, the Rambler exploded downfield, dodging one New Trier Trevian, then another, then two more. Dwyer — who had entered her fourth state championship game with 132 goals in 29 games this spring — unleashed a shot five feet from the goalmouth. The ball entered the cage with all kinds of urgency. It was 4-3 Loyola Academy, just like that. Dwyer turned, sprinted back toward midfield, accepting kudos from her mates along the way, and prepared for another face-off. Ready for more. It was Dwyer’s second goal of the night in what would become a breathless seven-goal performance in the Ramblers’ 15-9 victory. “She’s a pretty determined kid,” said LA coach John Dwyer, also the kid’s father. “I’ve known, since Brennan was a little child, to never doubt the size of her heart.” LA’s run of consecutive IHSWLA state championships grew to nine with the win on Brennan Dwyer’s future home lacrosse field. The women’s lacrosse program at NU captured its fifth straight NCAA championship in 2009 — the year when LA began its lengthy reign in Illinois. “Fast, agile, able to use both hands so well, incredible,” Ramblers senior attack/middie Grace Clarke said of Dwyer, one of nine Ramblers named to the IHSWLA all-state team. “She gets around players so easily.” Last weekend’s title tilt in Evanston wasn’t a facile one for LA (28-2). The Ramblers won six of

the first seven face-offs against New Trier (22-4) but led only 7-6 at the half. The Trevians had poured in two goals — one from freshman middie Charley Meier, the other from sophomore attack Lucy Murray — in a 13-second span near the end of the first half. “New Trier’s kids were ready for us, and they gave us their best shot,” said John Dwyer, whose squad defeated visiting New Trier 18-12 on April 26. “We beat a very good team, an incredibly wellcoached team.” It didn’t take long for LA to manifest its brilliance in the second half. John Dwyer’s potent bunch struck for five unanswered goals in a little more than six minutes to establish an ample 12-6 advantage, with Brennan Dwyer tallying two in the barrage. Butler Universitybound Clarke and senior middies Madison Kane and Caroline Witkowski scored the other goals. “We had so much confidence during halftime, because we’d been a strong second-half team all year,” said Witkowski, an all-state lacrosse and tennis player who

intends to play lacrosse at the University of Michigan. “We considered our team a family. Close — we are so close. One heart, one mind.” Two severely injured knees galvanized LA’s girls lacrosse team in 2017. Senior attack/middie Mary Dooley and senior middie Katie Enrietto each suffered a left ACL tear on the Ramblers’ trip to Colorado in April. Each had scored a goal moments before the season-ending injury. Each would still earn all-state status. Dooley got hurt on a Thursday. “I injured my knee the next day,” Enrietto recalled. The surgeon who operated on Enrietto operated on Dooley, too. Dooley wore jersey No. 12, and Enrietto donned No. 31. The Ramblers’ rallying cry for most the season: “12 and 31.” Each — with a brace on her leg and a lacrosse stick in her hands — entered the championship game in the final 30 seconds. “We all felt so badly for them,” Brennan Dwyer said after the state championship game. “We won

this for them.” Clarke finished with three goals, and Kane’s two tallies upped her season total to 71 goals, second among teammates to Dwyer’s 139. Seniors Colleen Huffman and Libby Germano also scored for the champions. Winning goalie Delaney Oliveira allowed only three goals in the second half of her final prep game. New Trier received a hat trick from senior middie Katherine Gjertsen and a pair of goals from junior attack Sophia King. Trevians Meier, Murray, Claire Gottreich and Courtney Kaskey contributed a goal apiece. “I was excited — beyond excited — before the start of the game,” King said. “That first half, being down only one goal, we showed people how strong we are, what we’re capable of doing.” New Trier’s theme this spring was “Legacy”. Trevians coach Pete Collins and his staff arranged for NT lacrosse alumni to speak to his players once a week. Alumni reminisced and shared

their insights on lacrosse and what it meant to be a Trevian. Current players listened intently to alumni and then couldn’t wait to hit the field with added purpose. “It was empowering,” King said. Collins addressed his club’s overall effort and Loyola Academy’s surfeit of talent after the championship game. He was impressed with both. “Our kids played super hard, just like they had all season,” Collins said. “It’s the most dedicated team, and it’s selfless, with all of the girls accepting their roles. Such a tight group. They loved playing lacrosse, and they truly enjoyed playing together. “That Loyola team — it never backed down tonight. You can’t give that team an inch. What they did to us early in the second half was hard to overcome. We had been doing a good job of sticking with our game plan of possession and taking smart shots, especially near the end of the first half.” Notable: A combined 16 Loyola

Academy and New Trier players earned IHSWLA all-state honors this spring. LA — Riley Dolan (defense), Mary Dooley (attack), Brennan Dwyer (middie), Katie Enrietto (middie), Colleen Huffman (attack), Madison Kane (middie), Delaney Oliveira (goalie), Brennan O’Malley (defense) and Caroline Witkowski (middie); NT — Katherine Gjertsen (attack), Courtney Kaskey (middie), Kyra LaMotte (defense); Lucy Murray (attack), Isabelle Sennett (middie) and Emma Tomlinson (defense). … Loyola Academy senior attack Libby Germano and New Trier freshman middie Charley Meier made the IHSWLA honorable mention all-state team. … NT coach Pete Collins, on Meier. “You put her in a room with other lacrosse players, and there’s usually a good chance she’s the player with the highest lacrosse IQ.” … LA senior attack/middie Grace Clarke, on teammate Brennan Dwyer: “A great player who’s also the sweetest girl. She’s always looking out for others and thinking of others.”

REAL HEAD-TURNER Eye-catching efforts from Balch, Yaccino spark Trevians in boys lacrosse state final BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

T

om Herrala shook his head. It appeared New Trier’s boys lacrosse coach was trying to wrap his head around what his second-seeded Trevians had just collected with a 9-6 defeat of top-seeded Loyola Academy at Stevenson on June 3 — the program’s 12th Illinois High School Association (IHSLA) state championship trophy. The coach was in awe. The coach was proud. “I did not think we’d score nine goals against that defense and against all of their All-Americans,” admitted Herrala, whose squad lost 7-6 to visiting and reigning IHSLA state champion LA in their regular-season meeting on April 29. “And our defense played an unbelievable game, an awesome game.” Trevians senior long stick middie and Roanoke Collegebound Sam Balch, an all-stater, played like an All-American from start to finish on a muggy day in Lincolnshire, deflecting an early Ramblers pass to set a resounding tone and playing inspiring, sticky defense the rest of the way to maintain that tone. “Sam played like he had a chip on his shoulder, didn’t he?” said Herrala, who guided NT to its third state title in four years. “Small and feisty and tough. He goes out there and takes care of business.” Freshman Cooper Yaccino was money in goal for New Trier (18-1), which limited LA (17-1) to one goal in the first quarter and two in the second. The 6-foot-1, 140-pounder — a quarterback on New Trier’s freshman football team last fall — came up with big save after big save on a rather big stage. He had been sharing goalkeeper duties with classmate Brian Dolby (the starter in NT’s 16-7 defeat of sixth-seeded Neuqua Valley in a state semifinal on May 31) all spring. But Herrala chose to stick with Yaccino in the second half of the state championship game. “It was Cooper’s game to win or lose,” Herrala said, alluding to NT’s 5-3 lead at the half. “Quarterback, goalie … you want a kid

Mike Feuer, Andrew Forsyth and Timothy Hackett authored LA’s other three goals on June 3. “Pretty evenly matched teams,” said Ramblers coach Rob Snyder, whose boys defeated fifth-seeded Lake Forest High School 17-7 in a state semifinal on May 31. “We struggled a little defensively. The main battle was New Trier’s defense against our offense, and New Trier won that one. “New Trier,” he added, “played faster than we did in the first quarter, and that continued in the second. Third and fourth quarters, we were pressing — a [style of play] that made us work out of our comfort zone.” Notable: A combined eight New Trier and Loyola Academy players earned US Lacrosse All-America status. WEATHERING THE STORM

Big hits by Redding, Calarco and strong pitching by Nugent, Douaire send Trevians to state tourney BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

C

am Redding was on second base at the time. So, he might, or might not, have heard that unmistakable “ping” of the bat. “The wind was howling,” said the New Trier designated hitter, moments after the Trevians defeated the South Elgin Storm 4-3 in a Class 4A supersectional game at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg on June 5. But Redding definitely saw the booming, thunderous drive by New Trier’s No. 6 hitter, junior first baseman Anthony Calarco. On a 3-0 count, “AC”, a switch-hitter batting from the left side, put a charge into a high fastball. It went bye-bye in a hurry, sailing over the wall in right field. “I knew he got it,” said Redding. “I started running right off the bat. I knew it was going over the right fielder’s head.” Redding raced to third and then jogged home — as Calarco trotted around the bases, giving the Trevians (30-4) a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. “Coach gave me the green light on 3-and-0,” said Calarco. “So I looked for a pitch up and in. “I knew I got it,” the junior first baseman added. “But honestly, I didn’t know if it was going out. I was planning on busting for three [bases]. I was a little stunned that it kept going and went out.” New Trier head coach Mike Napoleon, doubling as a fourlimbed traffic light in the thirdbase box, liked his slugger’s chances with one out. Letting him swing away was a no-brainer. “A 3-0 count with a guy on second … he gets the green light,” said Napoleon, tripling as a chef after the game — handing out boxes of pizzas to his players in the Boomers’ parking lot. Nailing down a supersectional win, on the other hand, is never easy. Just go back 365 days. Last spring, in a supersec-

tional game at Boomers Stadium, the 2016 Trevians jumped out to a 3-0 lead after five innings and wound up losing to St. Charles North 4-3. “I know the guys had that in their heads,” said Napoleon. “Fortunately, we were able to overcome it.” But not before hearts went racing. The Trevians, who went into the top of the seventh inning leading 4-1, gave up two runs after committing two costly errors. The tying run — South Elgin’s Kevin Barry (3-for-4) —

was on second base, when the game ended on a towering popup to Calarco. “We struggled through it,” Napoleon said. “And it ended up in our favor.” “There were some flashbacks to last year’s game,” Redding added. “But in the end, we got it done. And that’s all that matters.” Redding’s bat definitely was a factor in this game. In addition to singling and scoring on Calarco’s bomb, No. 26 ripped a run-scoring single in the third inning to bring in Eric Nicholas. “He’s good,” said Napoleon.

“Cam’s a good fast-ball hitter. He’s a good RBI guy. That’s why he’s in the No. 5 hole.” Senior Kevin Donahue, who finished the game with five assists and one putout at shortstop, also was a key to NT’s offense. He went 1-for-2 and brought in Payton Burch in the third inning with a deep sacrifice fly to left field. Senior catcher D ylan Horvitz and senior right fielder Matt Kann had NT’s other hits. Meanwhile, New Trier’s pitching was top-notch once again.

Senior right-hander Thomas Nugent went 5.2 innings and improved his record to a snazzy 12-1. He gave up four hits and no earned runs. “He was tremendous against a team that really battles you at the plate,” Napoleon said. Nugent was lifted in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Sean Douaire, who has been Mr. Extraordinaire in relief this spring, came into the game from left field and got out of the jam with a five-pitch strikeout. The senior right-hander also

was pumping strikes in the seventh — fanning two of South Elgin’s first three hitters before giving up the two unearned runs. “We gave them some extra outs,” said Calarco. “But our pitching was awesome.” Douaire especially was good on June 3, when he threw four scoreless innings of relief in NT’s 8-2 victory over Fenwick in the championship game of the Lane Tech Sectional at Kerry Wood Cubs Field in Chicago. New Trier’s nine-hit attack was balanced with Donahue and Calarco collecting two hits apiece. The team’s first run, in the second inning, was manufactured. Redding walked, went to second on a groundball single by Calarco, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Douaire and scored on a sac fly by junior third baseman Nate Shapiro. New Trier took its first lead — and made a winner out of Patrick Jodloman — with a two-run third inning on hits by Kann (one-out double), Donahue (one-out single) and Redding (run-scoring single) and a balk. Highlighted by Donahue’s triple and Horvitz’s run-scoring single, the Trevians added three more in the fourth. Then, in the fifth, Calarco singled and came home on a double by Shapiro. “It always feels great to contribute to the team,” said Shapiro, who broke into the starting lineup in early May. “I just want to do what I can.” The Trevians will face Crystal Lake South in a state semifinal on June 9 (3 p.m.) at Slammers Stadium in Joliet. CLS topped Mundelein 6-2 in Monday’s other supersectional game at Schaumburg. The last time that New Trier advanced to the state tournament was during the 2008-09 season. Charlie Tilson, who now plays in the Chicago White Sox system, was a sophomore outfielder on that squad.

BATTLE ROYALE Trevians unable to four-peat at girls soccer state tournament BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

T

wenty minutes after the game, Megan Murdoch, one of the senior captains on the New Trier girls soccer team, assured a sportswriter that the “sun was going to come up” in the morning. The NT defender was right, of course. Sunday morning was fabulous. Warm and sunny. But, on Saturday night, in the championship game of the Class 3A girls soccer state tournament at North Central College’s Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium — the dynastic Trevians, who were going for the elusive four-peat, experienced some unbelievable heartache after losing 1-0 to Barrington on penalty kicks. Murdoch, who spent a big chunk of her night heading the ball away from Barrington’s star forwards, took the loss like a champion. “I’m proud of what we did this season,” said a composed Murdoch. “We had a great run.” Seldom do you see two teams battle it out for 100 minutes without netting a goal. “Our kids played out of their minds tonight,” said IHSSCA Hall of Fame head coach Jim Burnside, who has guided New Trier to six state titles and 484 wins during his 21 years at the helm. “These two teams really went at it. I’m proud of our kids — and I’m proud of their kids. It was a battle to the end. “It’s good to be a part of a game like this,” he added. Soccer, just like other sports, can be a game of millimeters. The first real oh-my moment of the game came with 1:40 left in the second overtime. The Trevians (24-3-1) were awarded a penalty kick, when Barrington’s Madi Rosen took down NT forward Hannah Arment just inside the penalty box on the right side. The second oh-my moment of the game came seconds later, when the Trevians weren’t able to take advantage of the golden opportunity. Junior Sydney Parker, one of the best players on the field, avoided the reach of Barrington goalie Samantha Schmitz but hit

the right post. Lily Conley’s rebound shot sailed wide right. NT’s anxiety continued when the two teams faced off in the PK session. The Fillies (28-1), who lost to New Trier in a state semifinal game in 2015, drilled in three spot kicks in a row. The Trevians went 0-for-3 from the penalty arc, including two that flew over the cross bar. Burnside’s message in a postgame chat with reporters in the north end of the field was crystal clear. Don’t blame the kids. “It’s not on them,” he said. But you can accuse two amazing defenses for stealing the show. “Our best defensive game of the year. I’m very proud of our back line,” said Murdoch, lauding the efforts of fellow defenders Parker, Sam Urban and Caroline

Iserloth; midfielders Conley, Avery Schuldt and Hope Baisley; and goalie Katy Symanietz. “Barrington had outstanding wings. They’re very athletic. I knew we had to match their physicality.” Much of this game was played between the 20-yard lines. But both teams had their chances. Symanietz had her name — “KATY, KATY, KATY ” — chanted several times by the New Trier student section on the north end of the stands. The underrated senior, who allowed only nine goals in 23 games, made several unbelievable saves in the first 100 minutes, including a clutch deflection with two seconds left in the second OT. For the night, Symanietz was credited with eight saves. This was Barrington’s first state title.

“It feels pretty good to walk off rial (the article went on to praise this field as the best team in the the New Trier program). state,” said Barrington coach Ryan And, just maybe … not the Stengren. truth. Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Weaver, who now has 14 goals and six assists on the season, is a special talent. She came to the Trevians after being a top age-group club player with Eclipse. “She came up big time on the big stage tonight,” said Burnside. “What she did tonight is the stuff she does.” “Under the pressure and all, she performed extremely well,” added Parker. “She’s just a freshman. But she’s an experienced player. She knows how to play the game.” Weaver’s first score came in the 18th minute, when she gathered in a long feed from Urban, made a sharp cut to the inside, broke free and blasted in a shot from the top of the box. “What she did — dribbling across the field — is very difficult to defend,” said Urban, who was credited with an assist on goal No. 1. Weaver’s overtime goal, in the 82nd minute, was virtually a carbon copy. Lined up on the left side, Weaver took possession near the 30-yard line, shook free on a cutback route and hammered in a shot that nicked the glove of Collinsville goalkeeper Morgan Lerch. “I went across the defense,” said Weaver, sister of former NT standout Jess Weaver who went on to play at DePaul University. “I like doing that. It messes up with a defense’s dynamic. “And I love taking people oneon-one,” she added. Ten minutes after the game, Weaver was triple- and even quadruple-teamed by sportswriters. She handled that just as flawlessly. “To be able to put two in the back of the net and walk off the field with a win is just amazing. It’s unreal,” said Weaver. “It’s an honor to play and contribute for a team like ours. We have so many great players on this team.” Much like Maday, a star scorer for the Trevians who is now playing Division I soccer at the University of Illinois, Weaver has the ability to strike at any time, any place. And in any game.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Dell continues to dive right in — as a swim coach BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

M

ore than a decade ago, as a part-time Lake Forest Swim Club coach on her first day, Cindy Dell found herself on deck and in charge of a pool full of 6-year-olds. They all looked up at her with eyes as big as beach balls. “I had not been involved in swimming for 14 years, and swimming had changed,” recalls Dell, who had been persuaded to enter the field of coaching by Maureen Sheehan, the club’s executive director and head coach. “Those kids were in the Mighty Ducks class. About 15 of them were in the pool at the time. “The looks they were giving me shouted, ‘Please don’t let me drown!’ ” The ducks stayed afloat — and mighty. Their swimming coach remained a swimming coach. “I’ve been incredibly lucky and so blessed,” says Dell, now the boys’ head varsity swimming coach, the girls’ junior varsity swimming coach, the boys’ assistant varsity water polo coach and a teacher’s aide in the special education department at Lake Forest High School. “I get to build relationships with athletes and their parents, administrators, swim officials and other coaches.” The girl who lived briefly in Wilmette, moved to Northbrook and then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, in the eighth-grade just completed her 12th year of coaching and teaching at LFHS. “I learn something new every day. I learn from everybody. To me, every day is a gift, an opportunity to have fun and be happy.” Dell, 59 years old and a resident of Lake Forest since 1989, sits across from me at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest. She had ordered coffee and two eggs over hard with potatoes and an English muffin.

Her energy isn’t just palpable; it’s also ComEd’s top competitor in Lake County. “My dad [Rudy King, 82, of Bonita Springs, Florida], is incredibly upbeat,” says Dell, a physical education major who swam for one season at the University of Iowa and then opted to join Hawkeyes cheerleading squads and serve as the manager of the men’s swimming team. “I’m like he is, a gogetter who doesn’t like to sit. I never sit when I coach. I’ve had incredible mentors in my coaching life — Mo [Sheehan], Michael Lawrence [LFSC coach], Mike Cavill [her Madison A&W swim club coach] and Beth Emshoff [her James Madison Memorial High School swimming coach]. All four are all about dedication, hard work, being selfless, staying positive. “Mike Lawrence gave me great advice one day. He told me, ‘Keep smiling when you’re teaching or coaching on deck, because parents of the kids will notice you and feel their kids are safe.’ ” Dell’s connection with Olympians began in high school, where one of her classmates was Mark Johnson, who played hockey for Team USA at the 1980 Winter Games. All he did was score a pair of goals in that unforgettable 4-3 defeat of the Soviet Union and deliver the assist on the game-winning goal in the gold-medal contest against Finland. Dell later coached a couple of LFSC members named Matt Grevers and Conor Dwyer — also a couple of world-class swimmers

was living in Dallas in 1980 when I found out Chip had been living there, too. I called him — remember, this was way before cellphones existed — eight times before he finally picked up his phone. I yelled, ‘Where have you been?!’ He then said, ‘Who is this?’ ” They got together and talked for hours in Reunion Tower near the Hyatt Regency in Dallas. They got married after a two-year courtship and raised three children — Jason, now 33, Ashley 30, and Rudy, 28. Ashley was recently named a men’s assistant swimming coach at the University of Iowa. “I still call him ‘Chip Dell’, and he still calls me ‘Kinger’, says the former Cindy King, who swam on four state championship swim teams at Madison Memorial HS and sped as a leg on the Spartans’ victorious 400-yard freestyle

who would earn gold medals at Summer Games. One of Dell’s favorite stories is how she reconnected with a childhood neighbor, Chip, who would become her husband in

adds the 2015-16 Illinois High School Association Boys Swimming Coach of the Year. “He hadn’t lost all year in the 200-yard freestyle. Guess what Chip Dell told me that morning? He said, ‘Kinger, just tell Dylan to win his heat.’ ” Dylan Boyd won his heat and became the Scouts’ first state champion in an individual event since Mitch Stoehr touched first in a pair of events (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) in 2010. For nearly five years, while she lived in Dallas, Dell sold steel — inside and outside sales — after thinking she would run a corporate fitness program. One of her jobs these days? Turning swimmers into steely competitors. “I have had the privilege, as a coach, to work with countless kids who have incredible work ethics,” says Dell, all pumped up for another summer as the aquatics director at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park. “Swimmers inspire me, with their attitude, with their guts and determination, with their character. A pool is a place where I demand respect. A pool is the place where my swimmers get the opportunities to represent themselves, their family, their team and their school. “What I also love to do as a coach is find out what my swimmers do in addition to swimming. You’d be amazed — I coach musicians, artists, kids with all kinds of talent.” A huge Chicago sports fan, Dell attended a Cubs playoff game by herself in 2015. “I was fine with that,” she says. “It enabled me to focus entirely Cindy Dell on the game. But I didn’t just sit 1982. Cindy and Chip didn’t live relay in her senior season. “He’s there; I stood up to high-five too far from each other when my best friend, my shoulder to strangers all around me.” The size of Dell’s eyes on that both called Wilmette home. lean on, the love of my life. “We went to birthday parties “The day of the state meet night?
