Checking out of the Northbrook Library as citizens BY LIBBY ELLIOTT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
N
orthbrook Public Library hosted its first naturalization ceremony on the morning of May 9, welcoming 72 new citizens from 29 countries to the United States. Staff from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Chicago Field Office administered the special service. The cohort of new citizens represented a diverse group of nations, ranging from nearby Canada and Mexico, to faraway Jordan, Kenya and Mongolia. Dr. Thomas Cioppa, District Director for USCIS, administered the Oath of Allegiance, whereby new U.S. citizens must renounce fidelity to their former countries and affirm loyalty to the United States, promising to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces if ever required by law. “This doesn’t mean you give up Continued on PG 10
Luxury Kitchens: Heart of the Home 21st century kitchen the center of modern life BY BILL MCLEAN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
T
here was a time when the kitchen was off limits to anybody who did not cook food — except for those culinarily challenged family members who tiptoed late at night to make trips to the fridge for a snack. The kitchen today? It has been called a home’s hub, heartbeat, gathering place. Children are completing homework assignments at the kitchen’s island, while battling teardrops as mom or dad cuts onions for that night’s dinner salad. Guests no longer converse in living rooms; they’re either interacting with the hosts near the kitchen’s fully integrated refrigerator or maybe marveling at the kitchen’s old-is-new-again apron sink under the hands-free faucet. “Kitchens are getting so jazzed up,” says Karey Walker of Highland Park. “It’s not a space you want to hide; it’s a place you want to show off.” Since it’s the most important room in the house, with the most foot traffic, kitchens — particularly those of the luxury variety — are getting bigger and contain pieces that used to be staples in dining rooms and even studies. “Parents and their children are recharging their devices while sitting at the kitchen island,” says Lyana Aldamuy, a kitchen and bath designer at the Studio 41 Home Design Showroom in Highland Park. “It’s no longer just

an area where the family gets together to eat. “Remember the sounds of kitchen drawers and cabinets slamming shut?” she adds. “You’re not hearing those as much now, because more homeowners are choosing to install slow-close drawers and cabinets. Most people put more money into the kitchen than they do in any other room
in the house.” Scott Ryan — a showroom director at Studio 41’s 40,000square foot, state-of-the-art store on Skokie Valley Road — gives a tour of the showroom to a visitor, who asks, “White is still the most popular color for a kitchen, right?” Ryan then informs the soonto-be-enlightened visitor that yes, white will likely always be a go-to
tone for the kitchen, but to also keep an eye out for “greige.” His audience requests an explanation. “It’s a color combination of gray and beige,” Ryan explains. “It’s more of a color direction, driven by designers. We’re seeing customers who want two-toned kitchens — light colors around the top, darker colors near the
floor. Kitchens today are essentially entertainment places, and that’s why you’re seeing people interested in adding a ‘wow’ factor to the place. “Our biggest thing here is our one-stop element,” he adds, noting Studio 41 also operates three Kohler stores. “All of our Continued on PG 10

opportunity to make a speech. Schurer knew exactly what he wanted to communicate. “I talked about how Dr. Shellard, our Student Activities Director, always concludes the morning announcements by saying ‘Make it a great day, South,’” Schurer says. “He doesn’t say, ‘Have a great day,’ he says,
‘Make it a great day.’ Even though it’s something really simple, it’s those words that I try to embody in everything I do. So I shared a few instances where students at GBS had worked to make it a great day, and I challenged the 200 people at the ceremony to do the same.” Perhaps the thing that he’s
proudest of over his time at GBS was his willingness to get involved in so many aspects of school and community life. As student body president, Schurer particularly enjoyed the GBS 2016 canned food drive during the month of November. Setting out with a goal of collecting 100,016 cans (the 16 designating the year of the drive, last year the goal was 100,015), they were wildly successful, bringing in 129,066 for Onward House, the Northfield Township Food Pantry, and Vital Bridges. As co-leader of Key Club, he’s especially proud of the GBS Random Acts of Kindness campaign, created with his friend Lori Steffel in the winter of their sophomore year. The message is simple: Spread kindness toward others under every circumstance for no particular reason, simple things like smiling at strangers or sitting with someone at lunch who’s sitting alone. Each year they worked to spread the campaign further. This year, they worked with Illinois State
Representative Laura Fine on a bill to make Random Acts of Kindness an official State resolution this year. “We learned that more than 20 Illinois schools created their own Random Acts of Kindness Week in response to this bill being passed,” Shurer says. “It’s been amazing.” All of Schurer’s accomplishments at school and in the community were made possible by his simple strategy of taking an interest and getting involved. His freshman year he joined 12 different clubs. “People said, ‘John, you’re crazy; you’re not prioritizing,’” Schurer says. “I saw it differently. I thought if I tried everything that I was remotely interested in, I could work my way through my interests and passions. I can’t imagine my experience at GBS without all these student activities. I’ve learned a lot and met a lot of incredible people.” Next year, Schurer will study English at Middlebury College in Vermont.

NEWS KITCHENS Cont. from PG 1 stores are one-stop shops. We sell an array of products, and we outfit any budget. Our owner [Louis Silver] came up with the one-stop concept because he didn’t like having to go to nine different places to design a part of his home.” Ten years from now, Geno Benvenuti — owner of Benvenuti and Stein, a residential Design-Build firm in Winnetka — predicts the dining room in most homes will have become extinct. Imagine that: the dining room having something in common with the dodo bird. “Dining rooms are pretty much gone now,” Benvenuti says. “If one exists in a home today, it’s a room a family member enters only because it’s on the way to the Pops of orange color brighten this kitchen designed by Benvenuti and Stein. kitchen. People are kitchens are no longer the size of LIBRARY Cont. from PG 1 your customs, traditions and mores,” explained Cioppa. “We welcome that, because that is what enables America to be what it is.” Last year, more than 750,000 people were naturalized at ceremonies throughout the country and around the world, including some 28,000 individuals through the USCIS Chicago field office. North Chicago resident Nancy Brown, 46, an insurance auditor at Allstate’s Northbrook headquarters, sat quietly in the audience, watching her 61-year old aunt, Anne Belance, become a U.S. citizen. Brown recounted
her aunt’s 16-year journey to that moment, beginning in 2001, when she moved with her two sisters from Haiti to North Chicago in search of economic opportunity. Tragedy struck in 2002, when Belance’s sisters drowned in a freak accident at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, where all three were employed. Despite her deep loss, Belance remained in the United States and continued working in the resort’s kitchen, preparing fruit and vegetable platters for hotel events. Citizenship, her niece explained, will allow Belance the freedom to travel between the

United States and Haiti and seek citizenship for other family members in search of a better life. “Now my aunt can begin the necessary paperwork to bring her daughter to the United States,” said Brown. Twenty-six year old Grayslake resident Ril Wan came to the United States from Nigeria in 2001 at age 10 when his father, a physician, began a master’s degree in public health at the University of Illinois-Chicago. This spring, Wan will receive his undergraduate degree in economics from Northern Illinois University. After 16 years spent living and studying in the United States as a permanent resident, Wan said he felt “relieved” to finally receive citizenship. “This is going to make my life a lot easier,” he said. “There have been bumps in the road going all the way, going back to high school.” The USCIS administers two types of naturalization ceremonies: judicial, which are held in courtrooms overseen by judges; and administrative, where proceedings are officiated by USCIS staff at various locations. USCIS often holds special ceremonies to increase public awareness of the U.S. citizenship process. The Northbrook Public Library ceremony was part of a 2013 partnership between the USCIS and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, whereby the two national organizations provide support to libraries and museums by disseminating public information
and hosting events linked to immigration and citizenship. “We want to reinforce the library as a welcoming place where community is formed,” said Northbrook Public Library’s Assistant Director Brodie Austin. “Libraries play a critical role in helping immigrants get the information that allows them to be active, engaged citizens.” After all 72 new citizens had received citizenship certificates, the new citizens gathered with loved ones in the library lobby
for family time.” Among the other luxury kitchen trends: transitional designs that merge traditional and contemporary elements; steam ovens; smart ovens, too, capable of texting you to let you know your dinner is ready; mixed metals for a kitchen’s hardware, or “an infusion of polished brass and burnished gold,” says Marcus Voltz, business manager of Banner Plumbing in Buffalo Grove; and cabinetry material — stainless steel, aluminum or resin — for homeowners who want the extension of their kitchens (an area outside) to survive the weather conditions year-round. “People want to take the party outside without having to constantly run inside to pick up something for the guests,” says Rick Glickman, founder and president of Dream Kitchens, Inc., in Highland Park, and a professional who knew 22 years ago — well before HGTV’s Property Brothers knew
— how beneficial it is to show homeowners a kitchen design on a monitor (in 3D) before they make the decision to purchase it. “People are buying all kinds of products online, but they come to our showroom because, in many cases, they want [advice and support] as we take them through the process of designing and installing a kitchen,” Glickman says. The human touch — it’s still with us, thankfully. And it’s thriving and thumping in the hearts of homes. “In our digital age,” Glickman says, “people still need a place to congregate, communicate and feel comfortable, and that place is the kitchen — an emoji-free zone. People, more and more, are eating and interacting away from formal settings. “It’s all about the friendly gathering experience and feeling that experience,” he adds. “A kitchen is the ideal place for get-togethers with family and friends.”
to celebrate and pose for photos with Congressman Brad Schneider of the 10th Congressional District of Illinois, who gave the keynote remarks to an audience of approximately 150 attendees gathered in the library’s large auditorium. Waukegan resident Ricardo Casillas, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico several years ago, attended the ceremony with his wife, Carmen Soto, and their 2-year old son, Brandon. Casillas, 34, works at
Waukegan Tire & Supply Company; Soto teaches at a local day care center. Soto, also from Mexico, was naturalized as a child, and son, Brandon, received citizenship at birth, making Casillas the last of his young family to become a U.S. national. When asked how life in the United States would change with his new citizenship status, Casillas was quick to reply. “I’m very happy,” he said, smiling broadly. “I can vote now.”

f you are going to have a donut, why not make it a fresh one? That philosophy is the guiding principle of DB3 Donuts, a small donut shop in Evanston. “Our goal is to be the freshest donut you will ever have,” Robert LaPata, one of the owners of DB3 Donuts, told DailyNorthShore. DB3 Donuts opened a year ago April in a storefront on Central Avenue adjacent to the popular Ten Mile House restaurant. That’s no coincidence. LaPata and his two business partners, Joe Krouse and Frederic Gale, also own Ten Mile House and originally decided to lease the neighboring storefront for additional storage. At first, the space served as a private dining room — something Ten Mile House customers were requesting — as
well as overflow and additional storage for the restaurant. But they noticed that at times the space was sitting vacant and seemed to be underutilized. They discussed how to better use the space. “What can we do to enhance it? We came up with donuts because we knew it wouldn’t cannibalize Ten Mile House and it is something that is just fun,” LaPata explained. And donut shops have been on trend in Chicago over the past few years. “We saw the success that (donut) places were having in the city and nothing like that had opened on the North Shore,” LaPata remarked. DB3 Donuts is open for business on weekends only, serving small-batch, gourmet donuts. Given the limited hours, LaPata said they see the shop as almost a pop-up restaurant.
“Let’s make it special and let’s make it manageable,” LaPata said, explaining their philosophy. What LaPata loves best about DB3 Donuts is that the shop has become a special treat for parents who want to take a break from busy schedules and spend some one-on-one time with their children. “That’s what I love about it,” he said. The pastry chef at DB3 Donuts makes small batches of donuts throughout the day, instead of making a large batch in the morning. This system means that most customers choose from an assortment of warm donuts. One of the most popular offerings is called The Dude, a maple-cinnamon-sugar donut topped with a bourbon-maple glaze, applewood bacon and more cinnamon sugar.
Also popular is a yeast donut with a salted caramel pastry cream filling that is topped with chocolate glaze and salted caramel and pearl sugar. The shop usually offers about 10 standard varieties and five to six chef specials. DB3 Donuts also sells drip coffee, an organic specialty blend made just for them by Sparrow Coffee Roastery. “Their coffee is fantastic,” LaPata said. “We would love to open other locations and are always looking but it has to the right opportunity,” he said. As for the name DB3? Three business partners, a.k.a., three donut boys. DB3 Donuts is at 1704 Central Street, Evanston, and is open Saturday and Sunday only, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LOVE & MARRIAGE
Clutter-free marriage creates spring renewal
Joanna Brown
A
s you drive down your block on Garbage Day, the signs of spring are all there: overflowing trash cans,
piles of rusty hose reels and leaky hoses lining the curb, and papershredder confetti littering the lawn.
Spring Cleaning is upon us. I overhauled my coat closet today; you might have heard my son moaning about how he had to try on every … single … hat … I had found crammed into the deepest crevices of that tiny space. The experience was as painful to him as a drug-free root canal. The American Cleaning Institute found in 2013 that 72 percent of adults — like me — do some Spring Cleaning every year; a similar number reported that Spring Cleaning is a tradition worth maintaining. And science says the practice is good for our families. The journal Psychology Today reported in 2015 that clutter increases stress; it distracts us, and the smell, noise and sight of toppling piles overwhelm our senses. Organized spaces, in contrast, are associated with increased physical activity, generosity, conventionality and eating more healthily. The same Spring Cleaning practices can be applied to marriage. Innumerable experts have examined this idea and written about it far moreeloquently than
The journal Psychology Today reported in 2015 that clutter increases stress; it distracts us, and the smell, noise and sight of toppling piles overwhelm our senses.
I can, but their advice generally falls into three areas: 1. As in your home, clean out the clutter in your marriage. You could do that by mastering the art of forgiveness, dealing with the past, and talking about the subjects in our lives that are the most stressful – finances, for one. A 2016 study by TD Bank (the bank actually entitled the survey “Love and Money”) found that people who talk about money more often have a higher level of happiness with their significant other — 78 percent who talk at least once a week about dollars and cents say they are happy, compared to 50 percent who discuss the subject every few months. 2. Discard old habits. Resolve to abandon your most childish behaviors. If your phone or tablet is keeping you out of conversations with your spouse after dinner, resolve to cut back on your screen time in favor of interpersonal communications. Researchers at Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business surveyed 453 adults and found
that phone-snubbing behaviors (called phubbing) negatively impact relationship satisfaction; the behavior creates conflict, lessens relationship satisfaction and therefore life satisfaction, and it can increase levels of depression. 3. Identify the areas of your marriage that need more attention. Think of something you used to love doing with your spouse, figure out why you stopped doing it and then make firm plans to do it again soon. A 2008 study from the University of Denver Center for Marital and Family Studies found a highly significant correlation between fun and marital happiness; individual leisure activities, such as watching TV or browsing the Internet, don’t build those positive connections. None of it sounds easy, but it’s far more important than trying on yet another winter hat. Want to share your ideas for Spring Cleaning with Joanna? Glenbrook South’s Walsh buoys lacrosse teammates with her upbeat ways BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
T
he Glenbrook South girls lacrosse player did not like what she noticed during a Titans game in Michigan last month. Her team seemed slow. It concerned her, so she came up with a proposal and presented it to her coach, Annie Lesch, upon the team’s return to Illinois. “She told me, ‘Coach, we need to run more, train harder,’ ” Lesch recalls. “Then she asked me not to tell any of her teammates that it was her idea. She asked me to say, ‘A little bird told me we need to run more.’ ” The chirper was Titans senior middie and captain Eleanor Walsh. Lesch appreciated Walsh’s suggestion, but that didn’t stop her from denying the third-year varsity starter. “That was at a point in the season where we had to start tapering the girls to help them get ready for the playoffs,” Lesch says. “Never satisfied — that’s Eleanor. “We started running less, not more.” Walsh’s run in Titans lax gear is nearing its end. The Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association state playoffs began earlier this week, and Walsh — along with the rest of her classmates on the team — would like nothing more than to make another Final Four appearance later this month. Glenbrook South placed fourth at state two years ago and reached the Elite Eight last spring. “Our team this year, as a whole, is a happy, energetic team,” says the 5-foot-7 Walsh, all set to attend the University of Kansas, where her father, Tom — a former Glenbrook South football player — attended. “And I love it when we’re clicking and connecting and playing as one.” Walsh isn’t just a fast player for a 10-8 team that is considerably better than the looks of that record. “Eleanor,” Lesch says, “is super fast, ridiculously fast. She’s not our top scorer, and she’s not our top feeder. But she wins draw controls along the circle, wins ground balls and doesn’t lose the
brook South’s senior lacrosse players. It stuck with her in the ensuing years, and she’s battling with a similar verve on fields this spring. “As a player, she has a quiet aggressiveness,” Morahan — another captain — says of the teammate with “Boo” for a nickname. “She gets at it, goes after it, in her own way. You might not always notice her aggressiveness, but it’s there.” Walsh’s favorite musician is Frank Ocean, a rhythm and blues singer. Any song on Ocean’s “Blonde” album floats her boat. The sound of Walsh’s voice, around her teammates and coaches? Hard to beat. “I can’t remember a time when Eleanor wasn’t happy,” Lesch says. “She never sulks, never is in a bad mood. If you’re looking for someone who’s always smiling and has the ability to make you laugh, look for Eleanor. “We’re going to miss so many things about her. We’re going to miss her personality, and we’re going to miss her on the circle.” Notable: Glenbrook South was trailing visiting Loyola Academy 7-1 when lightning halted play with 3:23 left in the first half of South’s Senior Night game on May 10. Senior attack/middie Lindsey Karsh scored the Titans’ goal, and GBS sophomore goalie Delaney Gallagher made several impressive saves on point-blank shots. DOOLEY IMPRESSED
Alabama-bound senior turns on the jets, rolls to victory in the 800 meters at sectional meet BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
L
arry Dooley played it perfectly. His ploy was to push, but not to shove. His game plan was a flight plan. Just get her there. Just let her see the place. “My dad really wanted me to go to the University of Alabama, his alma mater,” said Loyola Academy senior standout Margot Dooley. “So I decided to humor him.” She hopped a plane to Tuscaloosa. “And all that I had to do was step on campus,” Dooley said. Smitten … instantly. Sold. “Pretty cool place,” added the future Crimson Tide athlete. Thanks, Dad. On May 11, in the Class 3A sectional at Loyola Academy, Margot Dooley found herself in a familiar place: the 800 meters. It was one of the heralded events at this meet. It was chockfull of big names. A virtual who’s who, if you will. “That was scary,” said Dooley. “So much good competition. It was a real test for me.” Dooley wound up winning the race with power and precision. After holding back and holding back, Dooley hit the final turn hard and exploded to the finish line. “She followed her game plan to perfection,” said Rambles head coach ChrisJon Simon. “It was a fun race to watch,” the LA coach added. “One of the best [sectional] fields that you will see. Possibly, a state preview.” Dooley was clocked in 2:15.89. And seven other competitors — New Trier’s Savannah Noethlich (2:16.49), Glenbrook South’s Lauren Hayes (2:16.50), Mather’s Rebecca Odusola (2:16.90), Lake Forest’s Emma Milburn (2:16.97), Evanston’s Enyaeva Michelin (2:17.18), Highland Park’s Stephanie Kriss (2:17.91) and Glenbrook South’s Emily Noone (2:19.86) — ended up running under the state cut and will be joining Dooley at the state meet in Charleston on May 19-20. “I had been really looking forward to this race,” admitted Dooley. “But I actually thought that the freshman [Highland Park’s Kriss] would crush all of
you know you have an athlete,” the coach said. “There’s running in the genes,” added Simon, referring to Margot’s mother, Mary, a marathon runner. “And when she starts competing against the SEC (Southeastern Conference) at Alabama, she’s only going to expand her talent.” Notable: Loyola Academy scored 38 points to finish sixth in the sectional team standings. The Ramblers qualified two relays: 4x200 (2nd, 1:44.69) with Anne Santangelo, Erin Santangelo, Addison Bendery and Brooke Moran and 4x400 (5th, 4:04.24) with Bendery, Jacqueline Topping, Lainey McKinley and Margot Dooley. Loyola Academy Boys Track The host Ramblers scored just enough points (105) to edge Marmion Academy (103) for first place in the Chicago Catholic League Meet on May 13. The individual highlights included championship efforts by senior Andrew Niewiarowski in the 800 meters (1:57.22) and senior Paolo Tiongson in the 3200 (9:27.57). LA also claimed the 4x400 relay title (3:29.59) with Niewiarowski, junior Luke Phillips, freshman Alex Gaspar and sophomore Jack Loveland. The 1600 meters also was a solid race for the Ramblers. Niewiarowski took second in 4:27.62, while Tiongson was third in 4:33.1. Marmion’s Michael Ronzone squeezed out the win in 4:27.60. In the 800, Phillips placed second in 1:59.44 while teammate Aidan Sullivan was fifth (2:01.46). In the 3200, junior Connor Hoag ended up fifth in 9:57.53. EXCITING TIMES Young GBS standouts turn in stirring performances at sectional BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

O
h baby, did she get excited. Glenbrook South girls track and field coach Meaghan Fastert, who has a baby due in June, admitted that she might’ve gone a little overboard during the long-jump competition at the Class 3A Loyola Academy Sectional on May 11. But, who could blame her? Raelyn Roberson, one of GBS’s young phenoms, blew it up on her second attempt. The tale of the tape: 17 feet, 11 ¾ inches. Her first-place leap might not have exceeded expectations — the sky is the limit with this freshman — but Roberson did better her personal best by more than a foot. More … than … a … foot. “I got pretty excited watching her,” said Fastert, a first-year head coach with the Titans. “Jumping up and down. “I probably freaked the baby,”
she added, with a smile. Roberson is trending well. She won the CSL South title on May 4 with a leap of 16-11 ¼. “She just competes and never makes excuses,” said Fastert. “She just keeps pushing herself. “It’s amazing to be able to coach an athlete like her,” the coach added. Roberson also made the state cut in the 100 meters (12.49). But Roberson is just one of several Titans earning berths to this weekend’s state meet in Charleston. The list also includes freshman Annie Streb in the high jump (1st, 5-3) and triple jump (2nd, 36-6 ½); sophomore Taylor Ozimek in the high jump (2nd, 5-1); junior Bailey Smith in the 100 hurdles (3rd, 15.53); sophomore Lauren Hayes in the 800 meters (3rd, 2:16.50); junior
Emily Noone in the 800 meters (8th, 2:19.86); freshman Kate Jortberg in the 1600 meters (6th, 5:09.99); and the 4x400 relay of Streb, Noone, Hayes and sophomore Taylor Ozimek (3rd, 4:04.12). Glenbrook South wound up second (68 points) in the team standings behind New Trier (114 ½). Evanston was third with 66 points. “Our girls looked at this meet as just another meet,” said Fastert. “It’s neat to watch these kids work day in and day out and then have it pay off.” Streb’s success is not a surprise. She claimed runner-up honors in the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (35-3 ½) at the league meet. She ran a 26.96 200-meter time on April 28 at the Niles North Invite. “She’s a risk taker. She’s fear-
less,” said Fastert. “She just goes for it. She’s a fun athlete to work with.” Fastert also loved what Smith did in the 100 hurdles. Coming into this meet, her best time was 16.35. “She knows what she wants, and she goes after it,” said the GBS coach. Glenbrook South Boys Track The Titans took fifth at the CSL South Meet at Niles West on May 12. The team’s top placers included senior Sam Cowhey in the high jump (2nd, 5-11), senior Jack Kelly in the pole vault (3rd, 12-7), senior Alex Sanchez in the 3200 (3rd, 9:46.63), junior Matt Jortberg in the 1600 (4th, 4:30.45), junior Armani Ubeid in the high jump (4th, 5-5) and junior Hayden Goldspink in the pole vault (5th, 11-1).

THE RUNDOWN
GBN’s Wilson makes it look easy at sectional meet BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

A
nchor Dana Sullivan likened Glenbrook North’s victory in the 4x400 relay to a “walk in the park.” It was that easy. In the final race of the CSL North Boys Track and Field Meet at Highland Park High School’s Wolters Field on May 12, Sullivan teamed up with Luke Amen, Ari Bosse and Michael Ocasek and blew by everyone to win by nearly five seconds (3:31.95). The same can be said of Hannah Wilson’s performance in the Class 3A Loyola Academy Girls Track and Field Sectional Meet on May 11.
She made it look that easy. The senior star, a University of Wisconsin recruit, claimed the 100 meters in a personal-best time of 12.16. Later on, Wilson blasted to a first-place finish in the 200 meters (25.02). Wilson, who has not lost a 100 or 200 race all season, now will be looking to better her times even more in the IHSA state meet at Charleston on May 19-20. The magnitude of the meet should not be a factor. She placed fifth in the 100 (12.20) and sixth in the 200 (24.91) at the 2016 State Finals. Wilson was the lone state qualifier for the Spartans, who finished ninth in the sectional
with 28 points. Wilson was part of the 4x100 relay (50.11) which placed fifth. She teamed with Alexandra Michalak, Mary Radziewicz and Leah Matlin. Other GBN placers included Katherine Doyle in the 400 (6th, 1:00.97), Carly Andrerson in the high jump (6th, 8-0) and Annette Clemens in the triple jump (4th, 33-8 ½). Meanwhile, GBN’s boys squad took fourth (82 points) in the CSL North Meet behind Deerfield (177), Vernon Hills (109) and Highland Park (101). Some key injuries, according to GBN head coach Scott Lasky, hurt his team’s chances for a
better finish. But, the coach added: “Winning [the 4x400 relay] was a nice end result.” The 4x400 is shaping up as one of GBN’s top entries. “We’ve rotated six or seven guys in,” said Lasky. There’s depth. And there’s some true talent, starting with Amen. The senior standout, a threesport athlete, was a two-time league champ. Earlier in the night, he raced to a first-place showing in the 400 meters (51.49), out-running teammate Josh Prupes (52.56). Amen said that he would try to walk on to the track and field
team at Dartmouth University next season. “I’ve talked to the coaches,” he said. “They know who I am.” In that 4x400, Amen ran leadoff leg — out of necessity. “I was the only one with sprinter’s experience,” he said. “It went well tonight,” Amen added. “But we definitely can do better.” Sullivan, a sophomore, looked strong in the final lap. He didn’t give an inch after receiving his exchange from Ocasek. “Luke gave us a solid lead, Ari kept it going and Michael sealed the deal,” said Sullivan. “When I got the baton, it felt
it was a walk in the park.” Much like the 400 freestyle relay in swimming, the 4x400 has a way of being a crowd pleaser. “It’s fun, intense and fast,” said Sullivan. GBN’s other champ was junior Kyle Foley. He won the 800 in 1:59.42. Other contributors included Nick Duelfer in the pole vault (3rd, 12-7), Joel Zimmerman in the long jump (4th, 19-0 ¾), Marek Wasilczuk in the triple jump (4th, 39-5) and high jump (4th, 5-9), Kwonsung Lee in the 300 hurdles (4th, 45.11) and Michael Lee in the 3200 (10:21.62).
