he New Trier School Board on April 17 concluded that the controversial Seminar Day was highly positive, but moving forward the school plans to integrate the conversation about race throughout the school year and will consider returning Seminar Day to a previous format of every other year, or every three to four years. “We want to get away from the idea that the only time we talk about race is on a special day,” Superintendent Dr. Linda Yonke said. Seminar Day, with a focus on “Understanding Today’s Struggle for Racial Civil Rights,” was held on February 28 and drew national attention when some parents stood in opposition to the day while others voiced their support. time with students. Leonard shared his personal story with the class. He said he was a D student at Loyola Academy who wanted to play college hockey and perhaps professionally. He said the only way
he saw at the time to attend college and play hockey was repeating his senior year at Loyola. Once he told a few people why he was still in town the reality got easier. “When people saw me they asked if I was home from college,” said Leonard. He told them he was not. “That really freed me to be myself,” he added telling the class he eventually went to Providence College, played hockey and learned to write. Before any of that happened, Leonard said, his brother asked him to join some friends at a concert at Ravinia. It was a Wednesday night. He said at that time Wednesdays were reserved for relatively unknown performers. Dylan was known as a folk singer and not yet very popular. Dylan’s songs held a message for Leonard. “I stood by the band shell,” said Leonard. “It was about a third full. I did not move. All the poetry I couldn’t read was clear to me. be creative, and I wanted to be rewarded for it,” he added, meaning he intended to earn his living creatively. Leonard also told the class reading was hard for him because he had a learning disability. That was the reason for his D average. When he looked at a written page it was hard to see it easily because the words appeared out of focus. “They didn’t test for (learning disabilities) then,” said Leonard. He said that was the reason hearing Dylan’s words showed him a beauty of literature he could not appreciate while trying to read. Though Leonard knew at that moment what he wanted to do, he kept it to himself. “My parents would have said there’s no money in it,” said Leonard. Then he told the class why they should not have such fear. “Ships are safe in the harbor but that’s not what they’re built for. If you stay with it, you’ll learn the winds and currents and you’ll sail away.”

NEWS HONOR Cont. from PG 1 D.C. on April 29 and ended with a Welcome Home Ceremony in North Chicago on April 30. The veterans served in Vietnam, Korea and World War II. At the Welcome Home Ceremony, Martorano said he was grateful to receive a hero’s welcome after having to lie about serving in Vietnam when he first returned home about 48 years ago. Martorano said he was hurt by the way veterans were treated by the public when he came home in 1969. “I went to college in 1970 and the 18 year olds asked why I was starting school when I was 22,” Martorano told DailyNorthShore. “I never said that I was in Vietnam. I said I had a job just to make money to come to school. It wasn’t until the late ‘70s, early ‘80s when I finally started to come out of this, but the experience stays with you forever.” More than 150 attendees gathered at the April 30 celebration to welcome the 21 veterans home from the Honor Flight, where the veterans visited the WWII, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials in Washington, D.C. Only three WWII veterans were scheduled to attend the Honor Flight. DailyNorthShore caught up with Highland Park resident Gerald Rubel on April 26, who served in the Army during WWII from January 1943 to SEMINAR DAY Cont. from PG 1 20 that focused on the controversy. Staff and students were surveyed after Seminar Day, and focus group conversations were held as well. Assistant Superintendent Tim Hayes reported that “overall the information we gathered was highly positive.” He noted that in feedback students said the keynote speakers were “engaging and interesting” and the workshops were “thought provoking.” Changes suggested could be put in three categories: • Workshops could be more engaging and interactive versus lecture based • More options for workshops could be included • A greater focus on student discussion There were a few students who did not enjoy Seminar Day or found it engaging. Hayes said 5% of students found Seminar Day boring, lacked discussion of diverse backgrounds beyond black and white, and could benefit
“Audrey has been here for every Honor Flight and she would’ve been here today, but she passed away on April 26,” he said. A moment of silence was observed in her honor. Some of the other speakers included Senator Terry Link, 30th District; U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider, 10th Congressional District, and Paula Carballido, director of Lake County Honor Flight. Carballido joined the veterans on the Honor Flight and made a special effort to connect with all of them. She served as emcee. Evanston resident Phillip J. Wieland, 86, served in the Marines as the Korean War raged. But attendance overall was up from last year. In 2017, 77 percent of students attended Seminar Day, up from 65 percent in 2016. While feedback was positive, given the amount of time and effort that goes into organizing the event, Hayes recommended returning to a previous format when Seminar Day was held every other year, or every three to four years. “Our dedication to a discussion about race is unwavering,” he maintained. But instead of a dedicated discussion about race once a year, Hayes recommended continuing that conversation throughout the school year in classes, advisory periods and after-school programs. Hayes also recommended formalizing New Trier’s partnership with other high schools, providing students an opportunity to engage with students of diverse backgrounds. Next year, New Trier students will attend school on Martin Luther King Day, and Hayes recommended acknowledging
King’s significant contributions by including an activity in an extended advisory period in the morning. Members of the school board
were receptive to the suggestions presented by Hayes. Lori Goldstein and Cathleen Albrecht both expressed their support in expanding the lesson on Martin
Luther King Day and also broadening the scope of the discussion to include a more diverse population. President Greg Robitaille noted that Seminar Day wasn’t
on the battlefields of Korea, France and Germany and in the Pacific Islands. They’re the men that made extreme sacrifice and these men should not be forgotten. To families that are here and around the country, we’re not heroes to our wives or our children. They know the worst and the best of us, and I want to salute them and our mothers and fathers who brought us up to be who we are today and who we will be in the future.” Below is the complete list of Veterans who were scheduled on Lake County Honor Flight #9: Monty Beckwith, VietnamMarines, William Chamberlin, Korean-Army, Theodore Conley, Vietnam-Army, James Cooney, Vietnam-Navy, William Frye, Korean-Air Force, Dennis Greaves, Korean-Army, Robert Hereth, Korean-Navy, James Jones, Vietnam-Army, Lorraine Knuth, WWII-Army, John Koenig, Korean-Marines, Robert Mantonya, Vietnam-Navy, Vincent Martorano, Vietnam-Navy, Henry May Jr., Vietnam-Marines, Eugene Mellon, Korean-Navy, William Oerly, Vietnam-Air Force, Dean Raymond, Korean & VietnamNavy, Gerald Rubel, WWII-Army, Orlando Serra, WWII-Navy, Richard Sidinger, Vietnam-Air Force, Robert Study Jr., KoreanArmy, Norman Van Den Bussche, Korean-Army, Philip Wieland, Korean-Marines. originally designed to be exclusively about civil rights and race relations and supported weaving those topics into the curriculum instead.

growing up in the lively Murray household. “It was an incredibly creative, theatrical family,” Kitchie said of the Murray family. At the Jubilee Celebration, Sister Murray will perform portions of her St. Catherine show. The Regina Choir Medley and Alumnae Choir Medley will also perform. In light of Sister Murray’s lifelong interest in theater, Regina decided to thank her for her years of service and commitment by naming the school’s theater stage in her honor. “Theater is Sister Murray’s life, as is the Adrian Dominican community. She is one of the first most influential alumnae in theater. She is a performer by nature and she is beloved. She impacted the lives of so many girls,” Kitchie said. The honor will also secure Sister Murray’s legacy. “By naming the stage (after her) we are ensuring her legacy
continues at Regina. It bridges the gap between our alumnae and students,” Pins added. Regina recently underwent a massive renovation of its auditorium, a space that is not only utilized regularly by the school, but by the entire community for band, orchestra, theater and other performances. The facelift included new carpeting, seating, paint, curtains and wheelchair accessibility. “Because it is so new and fresh it is almost inspirational for our students and the theater community,” Pins said. The renovation cost $1.3 million and Regina continues to fundraise to cover those costs. Regina plans to raise $150,000 at the Jubilee Celebration, roughly $80,000 of which is already in. While costly, the renovation is valued by the school and the community. “It has been worth every penny of an investment. It is just magnificent,” Kitchie said.

innetka parents raised concerns about New Trier High School’s decision not to release data reports from the New Trier Placement Test (called “ERB data”) at a school board meeting on April 17. Eighth grade students from each of the feeder districts take the placement exam to assist school administrators in placing students in appropriate level classes at New Trier. Winnetka resident Katie Scullion urged the board to release the ERB data reports, noting that past reports have indicated that Winnetka students “significantly lag” behind other feeder districts. She further noted that in 2016, Winnetka placed 25 percent fewer students in higher level classes at New Trier, and those Winnetka students in higher level classes had lower grades relative to their peers from other districts. Buffo’s still clowning around after 40 years BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
W
hen Lenny Innocenzi told his father in 1977 that he was leaving the family beer distribution business to open up a hot dog stand, his father was so angry that he called him “a buffo”, which means comic, clown or joker in Italian. “I thought it sounded a lot better than calling it Innocenzi’s Place, so I said let’s call it Buffo’s,” said Innocenzi. Fast forward to April 18, 2017 when Buffo’s received a Mayoral Proclamation expressing the City of Highwood’s appreciation for Buffo’s 40th Anniversary. Innocenzi said he ran special events in Highwood for many years. “When the city needed another snow plower, I would help them plow the streets at 2 a.m.,” he said. He also ran Highwood Days for 20 years. “I never thought (the restaurant) would last 40 years,” said Innocenzi. “When I got to 30, I said to my wife, I’d really like to last until 40 years. We were dating when I started the restaurant and we’ve been married for 36 years.” In addition to the Mayoral Proclamation, Buffo’s had a twoweek celebration for the 40th anniversary. Innocenzi said “The Best of Chicago” on WGN featured Buffo’s double decker pizza. In 1981, Buffo’s started serving pizzas to bring in more families. “Buffo’s was half the size of the restaurant now,” said Innocenzi. “Then a fire began in an upstairs apartment and it burned down in 1979. Fortunately, no one was hurt and in 1981 we put the addition on,” he said. The same year his partner, who he still considers one of his closest friends, decided to leave the business. Innocenzi takes pride in the fact that Buffo’s was involved in many “firsts” for Highwood. “There were no fast food places in Highwood 40 years ago, so when I said I was going to open a hot dog and beef stand everyone laughed,” said Innocenzi. “The late Marvin Fiocchi from Night ‘N Gale helped me out along with Billy Koretz from Shrimp Walk, and Bill Pigati, Del Rio. They taught me how to do everything from boiling water.” Buffo’s was the first hot dog stand to receive a liquor license in 1978 by the State of Illinois, and in 1979, it became the first street

Innocenzi explained that he and their son had it all worked out. “Then his family helped me decorate and we closed down the whole place on a Saturday night for the Bar Mitzvah,” Innocenzi added. He still keeps in touch with the family. Innocenzi said he’s grateful for Buffo’s longtime employees who include: Efrain Ocampo, 31 years, Henry James, 30 years, Aaron Vicario, 21 years, Facundo Mancillo, 17 years, Susan Krakora, 14 years, and Nicole Evenson, 10 years. His son Nicholas Innocenzi started working at Buffo’s about eight or nine months ago. “He was a financial guy, and he was getting tired of that, so he said he wanted to come help me run the restaurant and tell me what I’ve been doing wrong for 39 years,” said Innocenzi. His son suggested offering café that served liquor on public with the city and all of the restau- he wanted his Bar Mitzvah to be pizza delivery service, which is property. “Most places that had rants worked together, because we different from all of the other kids,” now available. “It’s good to have family here, seating in front of the business all had the same customers and said Innocenzi. owned the property, but we didn’t,” worked to grow Highwood.” He wanted to have it at his and all of the employees and cussaid Innocenzi. “It’s all city propInnocenzi recalled one of the favorite restaurant, so he and In- tomers like him,” said Innocenzi. erty, so the city and I worked out most memorable parties at Buffo’s: nocenzi planned his Bar Mitzvah “My three kids all grew up here an ordinance.” “Years ago, a 12-year-old boy before his parents even knew about and we had fun.” He added, “I always got along pulled up on his bicycle and said it. After the parents called, Innocenzi spent his childhood
in the Ravinia neighborhood and now lives in Lake Forest with his wife. Everyone in Innocenzi’s family loves pizza, but his daughter is allergic to cheese, so she inspired Buffo’s cheeseless pizza. In addition to cheeseless, and sauceless, pizza, Buffo’s offers gluten-free mostaccoili with meat, marinara or butter sauce. Innocenzi said the popular, homemade tortellaci with meat sauce was originally prepared by two local grandmothers, and now some other women have taken over making the old Highwood recipe. Innocenzi has no plans of retiring in the near future. “If you came to me and said you have to run the restaurant from behind the counter and you cannot go out and talk to customers I would’ve sold the place a long time ago,” he said. “I love all of the kids and customers that come here and I’ve become really good friends with a lot of my customers. I’m still having a good time.” Buffo’s is located at 431 Sheridan Road in Highwood. For more information call 847/432-0301.

Goal of Collaborative Law outfit is to bar divorce-court dates
Joanna Brown
I
f you’re in the mood for courtroom dramas, Netflix can quickly recommend 100 for you. Some of the most gut-wrenching, tear-jerking stories are those of families working through (and around) the legal system.
But Chicago-area attorney Theresa Kulat explained that there is an alternative for couples that want to end their marriages without the anger displayed by Golden Globe nominees. She is president of the Collaborative
Law Institute of Illinois (CLII), a non-profit organization comprised of members from the legal, mental health and financial fields. These attorneys are committed to keeping their clients out of the courtroom. Kulat was a Collaborative Divorce client before she earned her CLII certification. “I appreciate that Collaborative Divorce is not for everyone,” Kulat said, “but when both spouses accept that divorce is going to happen, for the right family, this can be an almost magical experience.” However, it takes a team to get there. It works like this: when two spouses agree that divorce must happen, each retains a certified Collaborative (with a capital C) Divorce attorney; these professionals have completed many hours of special training in mediation and associated strategies to maintain their certification. The spouses and attorneys then call upon a neutral financial coach to advise both spouses, a mental
health professional (or two, if the spouses prefer separate therapists) and a neutral child advocate to represent the best interest of the minor children, if applicable. “The team is there is educate and empower both parties so that they understand everything and can make good decisions moving forward,” Kulat said. “We are helping people in the long term and the agreements we come to are durable.” She compared it to a charter flight in which the pilot, flight attendant and mechanic work together to get the passengers from Point A to Point B. “They don’t do any of the others’ jobs,” Kulat noted. “Sometimes they work together; sometimes they do their own thing. But this is a charter plane, not a commercial flight, so you get to pick your destination and customize what your life is going to look like when it’s all done.” The team members and divorcing spouses sign an agreement on Day One, which says, among
other things, that the Collaborative Divorce attorneys will not represent their clients if the divorce goes to litigation. The goal is to always reach a settlement that satisfies both sides. But Kulat acknowledged from the very beginning that Collaborative Divorce is not for everyone. Just as there is a lid for every pot, there is an attorney for every unhappily married person and plenty of business to go around. Couples best suited for the collaborative divorce process meet three criteria, Kulat said. First, underneath it all, they care for and respect each other, even though they don’t agree on everything. Second, they voluntarily allow full access to the absolute truth. Financial statements, for example, must be shared without hesitation. “In a courtroom, litigators have access to subpoenas and other legal tools that we don’t have,” Kulat said. “So if you think your spouse is keeping two sets of books for [his or her] business,
you are probably not a candidate for Collaborative Divorce.” Also suitable for resolution through a collaborative course of action: couples with children or a shared business — or people who have a significant interest in maintaining a healthy relationship after the marriage is dissolved. But make no mistake: the Collaborative Divorce attorneys who lead these proceedings represent their clients as voraciously as anything Netflix promotes. They are trained to walk a fine line. “There has to be a balance of head and heart, where both are engaged and both are honored,” Kulat said. “You can’t be all gushygushy Kumbaya because that doesn’t satisfy the needs of your client to analyze the numbers, but if you go into this [with your head only], you won’t connect with the client and empathize.” Find more information at collablawil.org. PSYCHED TO PLAY Quick study Carl advances her game, leads Giants in scoring BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
K
ate Straka doubles as sophomore forward Jolie Carl’s AP Psychology teacher and varsity soccer coach at Highland Park High School. “Jolie,” Straka says, “is all business in class, just like she is when she plays soccer. She knows her stuff in both. She is a fierce competitor in soccer, and she’s dynamic, fun to watch. The opportunity to coach her for nearly two years now — it’s been great for me and truly a pleasure.” The field of psychology fascinates Carl, so much so that she is already thinking of delving deeper into it during her college years. “We’re learning all about abnormal psychology,” Carl says. Normal for Carl — a gifted 5-foot-6 athlete who, with a ball at her feet, deftly zigs and zags through defenses — these days: matches with multiple goals. Carl struck for a hat trick in a 4-0 defeat of host Waukegan on April 4. Two weeks later, she notched a pair of goals in a 6-0 home win against Maine East. Through April 28, Carl had team highs of nine goals and five assists. She matched her 2016 goal total of four in the third match of her 2017 season. “I am looking for my shot more than I did last year,” says Carl, who assisted on one goal last spring but dished a pair of assists in a PepsiCo Showdown victory (3-2 on penalty kicks, versus Andrew) on April 13. “I’m moving forward more in our possession-oriented offense, and I’m more relaxed compared to last year. “I guess I’m warming up to the varsity [atmosphere].” Carl’s start in organized soccer began when a friend of her mother, Carol, informed Carol that an AYSO team was down a player. Carol, to Jolie, then 7 years old: “Do you want to play?” Jolie’s response: “Sure.” The year after her AYSO days, Carl joined a Premier club. She then played for Chicago Magic club teams for a couple of seasons before beginning her tenure with her current club, FC United. Carl’s first season with FC United was her first U-12 season. Her last two seasons with the
School,” says Carl, who scored the goal in HP’s 1-0 defeat of Deerfield on April 20 and tallied the goal in regulation in the Giants’ 2-1 victory (penalty kicks) over Kaneland’s Knights in a quad match two days later. “I like to score, sure, but I’m happiest when my friends score and we’re all working well together. Fun. The whole experience of playing high school soccer is a fun one.” Carl has no idea what she wants to be when she grows up. Then again, how many sophomores do? For now, there are psych tests to ace, soccer matches to win and mozzarella sticks to devour at her favorite restaurant, Marcello’s in Northbrook. Life is good for Jolie Carl. Very good. “My commitment to soccer is a serious one, and it has meant that I’ve had to become more efficient with my time away from soccer,” says Carl, whose report cards since her freshman year are littered with mostly A’s and a couple of B’s. “But what’s been nice is hearing my parents [Carol and Brett] tell me, ‘Have fun with soccer — that’s the most important part.’ ” Notable: Giants senior goalkeeper Maile Lunardi, a University of Texas-Rio Grand Valley recruit, set a program record for career shutouts this spring, supplanting 2003 graduate Laura Balanoff ’s total of 16.5. Lunardi had 19.5 career shutouts through April 28, including seven this spring. Lunardi and her defense did not allow a goal during a three-match stretch from April 4-9 and then topped that with four consecutive shutouts from April 17-22. … Highland Park CARL YOUNG: Highland Park High School sophomore forward Jolie Carl (right) fights for possession against Deerfield’s Katherine reached the Final Four of the Stanaszek in recent CSL North girls soccer play. CLICK-ING ON ALL CYLINDERS Lake Forest senior putting together an outstanding season BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
S
he’s fluent in hurdles-speak — now. That wasn’t the case for Lake Forest High School’s Haley Click three years ago. Her very first 300-meter hurdles race was not a thing of beauty. Or grace. It was a mess. Unwatchable. “She stutter-stepped over every hurdle,” Lake Forest assistant coach Katie Darraugh recalled. Eventually, coach and hurdler found a cure for her lack of fluidity. And now …. this. The 5-foot-10 Click, a University of Michigan recruit, is clicking off one good race after another. She is rhythm in motion. And, talk about good theatre. Currently, the senior is chasing down a school record owned by none other than … Katie Darraugh. “I think Katie’s a little nervous about that,” said LF head coach Nathan Sweet, with a smile. In 2006, Darraugh flew over the eight hurdles in this grueling race in 44.74. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Click ran a career-best 45.58 in the 300 hurdles at the Wauconda Invite on April 21. And then she followed that up with a 46.96 in frigid conditions at the Lake County Invite on April 27 at Deerfield High School. “Someone is going to break it some day,” said Darraugh, a teacher at School of St. Mary in Lake Forest, who has been an assistant coach with the Scouts for the past six seasons. “I’d be happy, if she were to do it. Why not have it be broken by someone that you coach?” Sweet saw this coming. “She broke through at last year’s sectional meet [at Niles West],” said the LF coach. After racing to a second-place finish in the 2016 North Suburban Conference meet (47.49), Click clocked a 46.61 to take runner-up honors in the Niles West Sectional. She then ran a 46.95 at state (16th place). “The blossoming happened last year,” said Sweet. “She’s in full bloom this year.
She also is a part-owner of the school record in the 4x100 relay. On April 12 in a double dual against Stevenson and Lake Zurich, she teamed with Sydney Leonardi, Kamila Obrzut and Anna Curry to run a 50.6. Click developed a love for track and field at a young age. She joined the Waukegan Invaders Track Club as a fifth-grader. That training has paid dividends. “She always gives 100 percent at every practice and every meet,” said Darraugh. “Which I appreciate.” “To be an elite athlete, you have to put in the work. And that’s what I’m aspiring to be,” said Click. “I’m trying to do my best with no regrets. Just trying to better myself. “That’s what I like about this sport,” she added. “You get back what you put in.” That also proved to be the case with her older brother. Taylor Click currently is running track at the University of Oklahoma after starting out at Columbia University and being a two-time Ivy League medalist. His specialty is the 800 meters (personal-best time of 1:51.78, set at Columbia). Like her brother, Haley Click figures to flourish at the next level. The 400-hurdle event figures to be a perfect fit. She also is eyeing the steeplechase. Versatility is one of her strengths. “Honestly, I think she has the skill set to be great in the heptathlon [200 meters, 800 meters, 100 hurdles, long jump high jump, shot put and javelin] some day,” said Sweet.
QUICK CLICK: Haley Click runs leadoff and helps the Scouts take second in the 4x100 relay at the Lake County Invite. The senior standout also won the 300 hurdles and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER
“What makes her so good is her willingness to get better,” Sweet added. “Her expectation is to make it to the State Final this year. And I think that’s a realistic goal.” Click still has some hurdles to clear. Mental ones.
“I’m trying not to get into my own head,” Click said. “Trying not to get caught up in things..” “Just compete and not overthink,” added Darraugh, who, after graduating from LFHS, went on to become a prized pole vaulter (clearing 12-4) at the University of
Virginia. “It can be detrimental if you think too much.” Breaking school records is nothing new for Click. On April 17 in a home double dual meet against Libertyville and Mundelein, she ran a 25.7 to set a school standard in the 200 meters.
Francesca Curry. The Scouts, who finished third in the team standings (57) behind Grant (82 ½) and Warren (67 ½), also received strong efforts from Olivia Vallone in the 100 hurdles (2nd, 16.35) and Leonardi in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 48.41).
Highland Park It looks like there is no slowing down Highland Park High School freshman Stephanie Kriss. She was one of the headliners in the Lake County Invite at Deerfield on April 27. Despite chilly weather conditions, Kriss claimed the 1600 meters in 5:14.88, wiping nearly six seconds of her previous best time. And in the process, Kriss outperformed a name distance runner in Libertyville junior Melissa Manetsch (5:15.33), who won the 3200 earlier in the evening by almost 10 seconds. Kriss is causing a stir. She currently has the best 800-meter time in the state (2:12.83), which she accomplished at the Distance Night at Palatine on April 22. Her sister, junior Veronica Kriss, also turned in solid work on the Deerfield track. She finished third in the 3200 (11:26.34). Another up-and-coming freshman, Jillian Butler, completed the 3200 in 11:48.78 for fifth place. The Giants, who placed seventh in the team standings (50 ½ points), also had a strong showing in the 4x200 relay. SHRILL OF VICTORY
Gottreich’s voice carries a lot of weight with New Trier’s talented girls lacrosse team BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
T
he New Trier girls lacrosse team’s defense has a voice — an unmistakable one — and it belongs to senior Julia Gottreich, a fun-loving, highly intense athlete who plans to play field hockey at Bowdoin College in Maine. If her voice sounds hoarse, it’s because she either loves to communicate loudly during lacrosse games or sing window-rattling songs inside a bus to and from away games. “Julia is an excellent communicator,” says Trevians assistant lacrosse coach Kristen Murray, also the team’s defensive coordinator. “She can get quite loud, but that’s a good thing. She sat out a recent game with a foot injury, and the team realized how much her voice meant to the team during games. “Our defense that day was too quiet.” NT’s defense did a good job of silencing host Loyola Academy’s potent offense for lengthy chunks in the first half of an 18-12 loss on April 26. The game between a 12-1 NT squad and a 14-2 LA team — the eight-time reigning state champion — was tied at 5-5 at the break. “We had a really strong first half,” says the 5-foot-7 Gottreich, a co-captain this spring and a field hockey co-captain and allstater last fall. “Maybe we’ll get the opportunity to play them again. If we do, we’re going to have to play a flawless game.” Or at least match the impressive effort New Trier displayed in a 13-9 defeat of perennially strong Hinsdale Central on April 21. “Awesome win,” says Gottreich, whose sister, Claire Gottreich, is a sophomore middie on varsity. “Our attack was amazing that day, and I liked how our defense played.” SOUND PLAYER: Julia Gottreich of the Trevians races upfield with the ball during her recent game What New Trier lacrosse against Loyola Academy. PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE PFOERTNER
coach Pete Collins likes about Julia Gottreich: plenty, beginning with the vibe her personality provides for her teammates and coaches. “She’s got this nice blend of humor and focus, which is great and cool,” Collins says. “She’s not afraid to laugh, not afraid to make fun of you — in a good, funny way. But here’s the thing about her, the athlete: Julia does not back down … from anybody. In one of our defenses, we ask her to double the player with the ball. She’s quick and smart and uses her footwork to cause turnovers or take away drives. She basically runs our defense and marks the cutters. “In another defense, our 2-3-2 zone, Julia sees the ball, pressures the ball and directs everybody on defense.” Win or lose, following the post-game handshakes with the opponents, Collins typically looks for Gottreich and asks her a question: “What are you thinking?” What he always hears from Gottreich are straight-shooting words. None of her syllables has ever been sugarcoated. “I love getting a dead-honest response from her when she gives me her take on what just happened,” Collins says. “Julia is constantly willing to do whatever she can to make our team a better team, and she’s a teammate — every team needs at least one like her — who makes everybody around her better.” That field hockey, rather than lacrosse, is Gottreich’s No. 1 sport does not bother Collins one iota. The coach calls field hockey Gottreich’s “first passion.” His lacrosse roster features more than a handful of multi-sport athletes. Multi-sport athletes love to compete, Collins notes. “We’re excited for Julia to play field hockey at Bowdoin,” Collins
says. “Who wouldn’t be?” Bowdoin lost to Middlebury in the NCAA Division III national championship game in 2015. The Polar Bears went 21-1 under longtime coach Nicky Pearson that fall. Her teams at Bowdoin have reached the Final Four in the NCAA playoffs nine times since 2011. Gottreich got introduced to field hockey as a sixth-grader at The Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth. Two years later, she started playing for a club team with Windy City Field Hockey. “There’s constant movement in field hockey — one of the reasons I enjoy that sport so much,” says Gottreich, who also enjoys watching Grey’s Anatomy and listening to — and singing to — music by a range of artists, including Beyoncé. A Beyoncé song, “Listen,” contains the lyrics, “Oh, I’m screaming out at my dreams to be heard.” Can you hear Gottreich belt out that song? Notable: New Trier senior middie Katherine Gjertsen and sophomore attack Lucy Murray scored four goals apiece in an 18-12 loss to host Loyola Academy on April 26. Murray also delivered a team-high four assists. The program received tough news the next day: Murray will miss four to six weeks with a stress fracture in her back. Trevians senior attack/middie Isabelle Sennett and junior attack Sophia King finished with two goals apiece in the loss. Sennett also had an assist. … NT split a pair of games against Michigan teams at the University of Notre Dame on April 30, topping Cranbrook Kingswood 13-9 and losing 14-12 to Rockford High School. The Trevians returned home with an overall record of 13-3.

ROLLING, ROLLING Huffman, Ramblers putting together yet another stellar seasonbehind the plate BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
A
sk Loyola Academy girls lacrosse coach John Dwyer — helmsman of the eighttime reigning state champion Ramblers — to list the highlights from the program’s 2016 season. It would not take him long to mention something that happened in the opener. A girl scored a goal. Not a big deal? It was to Dwyer. And many others. Ramblers attack/middie Colleen Huffman — a junior and two-time state champion at the time — scored that goal last spring. Huffman had suffered a right ACL tear at a lacrosse camp the previous summer. Diligent rehab and daily positivity helped the Glenview native mend. The tally against Fenwick, in essence, screamed, I’m fine, and I’m more than ready to contribute in any way I can. The girl nicknamed “Chuff ” would finish with 48 goals and 28 assists for another state championship squad. The lefty made the all-state team as an honorable mention pick and earned US Lacrosse Academic All-America honors. “Great kid from a great family … an awesome family,” Dwyer says of Huffman, a senior cocaptain who scored twice and assisted on two other goals in host LA’s 18-12 defeat of New Trier on April 26. “An unbelievable student, too, though she’d never tell you that because she’s quiet about a thing like that. “I see her helping our younger kids all the time, encouraging them and telling them where they need to be on the field.” Huffman’s role for the 2017 squad changed after the Ramblers’ trip to Colorado last month. It was there where two of her teammates — senior middie Katie Enrietto and senior attack/middie Mary Dooley — each sustained an … ACL tear. “I’ve had to step up since then; we’ve all had to step up, because losing two valuable players was tough,” says Huffman, whose production (33 goals and 19 assists, based on the latest Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association stats) ranks third among teammates behind senior middies Brennan Dwyer (67 goals,

37 assists) and Madison Kane (37 goals, 28 assists) on a 17-2 team this spring. One of Huffman’s older sisters, Meghan, played for one state championship Loyola Academy lacrosse team. Meghan, a University of Notre Dame graduate, presented Colleen (then a secondgrader) with a mini lacrosse stick she had picked up at a tournament. The sibs tossed a lax ball around at home, and Colleen was hooked in no time. She started playing travel lacrosse as a sixth-grader. “I had played a bunch of other sports,” Colleen Huffman says. “I loved lacrosse right away. It was fast, my kind of sport. By the time I reached Loyola, it was my favorite sport.” She finished her freshman season on varsity with 11 goals and a pair of assists and more than doubled that output (22 goals, 6 assists) in her sophomore season. Huffman’s next stop on her lacrosse journey? Yale University, where an assistant lacrosse coach named Colleen Smith and a freshman defenseman named Hannah Burgess work and play, respectively. Each is a Loyola Academy graduate. “My parents [Bob, a former prep football player, and Patty, a former prep track athlete] have been great,” says Huffman, who is
thinking about majoring in either economics or political science as preparation for a career in either finance or public policy. “They both love sports, and my dad likes to remind me, ‘Dream big; never think small.’ ” Huffman’s teammates? They want good ol’ Chuff to continue to make opponents huff and puff while they attempt to keep up with her forays near the cages and her tricky left-handed shot. “Great shot, great finisher, great team player,” says Ramblers senior middie Caroline Witkowski, an all-state doubles player in tennis (with Maggie Hines) in 2015. “She’s a huge contributor for us, especially from behind the goal with her ability to crease roll. That left-handed shot of hers — huge advantage; opponents often don’t know how to deal with it. “Chuff is also pretty witty and extremely intelligent, and she’s my go-to before games to get me motivated.” Like all of Loyola Academy’s players, Huffman is grateful to be a part of something bigger than herself — a program synonymous with imposing success, year in and year out. “It’s a super-cool experience, being a player on lacrosse teams at Loyola Academy,” says Huffman, who scored a super-
high 5 on the AP Statistics test — as a sophomore. “To get to play with so many different players each year, so many great players each year, is a special opportunity.” Notable: Loyola Academy senior middie Madison Kane finished with a game-high five goals and a team-high-tying three assists in its 18-12 defeat of visiting New Trier on April 26. Classmate and Northwestern-bound Brennan Dwyer had four goals and three assists in a game that was tied 5-5 at the half. All three of senior attack Libby Germano’s goals came in the second half. Coach John Dwyer’s crew of Ramblers tallied the first four goals of the second half, with two coming from the stick of his daughter, Brennan. LA got a goal apiece from Claire Caffery, Grace Clarke, Caroline Witkowski and Sophia Rucker. Caffery’s score expanded LA’s lead to 18-9 at 3:40 of the second half. LA’s Delaney Oliveira, Annie Enrietto and Mary Kate Campbell shared time in goal against New Trier (12-2), which had entered the game with four victories in which it scored 20 goals. … LA traveled to the University of Notre Dame on April 30 and defeated Cranbrook (Michigan) Kingswood 15-7 and Rockford (Michigan) High School 14-6.

month. The featured authors — for the first time — offered presentations in schools from Chicago to Waukegan as part of
the Ragdale in Schools program. “We’ve had architects talk with students about their field in local classrooms, and I’ve seen some of the those kids’ eyes light up — it’s a breakthrough moment for them, a light-bulb moment,” says Meeuwsen, who had ordered an omelet filled with artichoke hearts, avocado, goat cheese and roasted tomato sauce at The Lucky Platter in Evanston. “A student, who had been searching for direction, suddenly thinks, right there in the classroom, ‘I can be an architect someday.’ Nurturing is going on when our residents are sharing their passions with the students. Those students go home as students with different paths in mind.” One of Meeuwsen’s “babies” — the Ragdale Ring design-build competition — was inspired by his interest in offering inventive opportunities for creative practitioners to take leaps in their new work. Now in its fifth year, the competition is fully international, he notes. Ragdale received proposals from France, Germany, Spain and Iran this year. The Adrian Smith Prize for the 2017 Ragdale Ring went to T+E+A+M, a young, internationally recognized architectural collaborative based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The unit submitted LIVING
PICTURE — a contemporary interpretation of the original Ragdale Ring garden theatre designed by Shaw in 1912. Meeuwsen received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids and his Master of Fine Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While earning the advanced degrees, he worked for 10 years in marketing (research and product development), notably with Creative Resources, Inc., in Grand Rapids. “I fell in love with non-profit work at Creative Resources,” says Meeuwsen, who, with his husband of 25 years, Steve, owns a cat named Cava. “I worked with Junior Achievement, United Way, hospitals and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I worked closely with the museum’s staff on promotions and major exhibitions.” Meeuwsen would like nothing more than to have the free time to explore neighborhoods in Chicago. But he sometimes finds openings in his busy professional life to hit museums in Chicago and people-watch. Walks along the lake, in Evanston? The former float architect is all in, with ears wide open. “It’s not unusual for me to hear 20 different languages during a walk,” Meeuwsen says. “I love how people from all over the world are enjoying a shared space.” Cause for celebration, indeed.
