‘That was the last thing I remembered for three days’

rv Abramson and Doris, his wife of 67 years, sit at a front table in The Zodiac restaurant at Neiman Marcus. Before they share a dessert, Irv puts a number of large envelopes on the table.

Inside are his memories of a lifetime – black-andwhite pictures from his wedding day, for example. A Western Union telegram is included, and the words crafted in the 1940s and addressed to his father, Louis, are chilling.

“Regret to inform you your son was seriously wounded in action … you will be advised as reports of condition are received.”

Abramson served in the Battle of the Bulge. The surprise attack by German forces six months after D-Day led to the worst number of U.S. casualties in the entire war. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, more than 19,000 soldiers were killed, about 47,000 were wounded and 23,000 went missing.

At the outset of the battle, in the December cold, Abramson and his two Army buddies tried mightily to dig a foxhole. It ended up being a foot deep as artillery shells exploded above them.

“I remember it being dusk, and the next thing I knew, it was morning,” he recalls. “As I looked up, there were first-aid men standing over the foxhole.

I held up my hand for them to grab it, and that was the last thing I remembered for three days. I didn’t know I had been wounded.”

Battle of the Bulge veteran fortunate to have survived

Irving Abramson received a Purple Heart during World War II.

■ by angelika labno In December 1944, Irving Abramson and his comrades of the 100th Infantry Division populated a heavily wooded part of the Ardennes Forest near the France-Belgium border, when a barrage of German artillery shells commenced, one landing every 20 seconds.

“It would hit the trees and explode, and as the shell exploded, there were thousands of pieces of shrapnel that showered all of the troops,” said Abramson.

It was the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge — and Abramson was in the thick of it.

That winter was the coldest one Europe had seen in decades, Abramson recalled. On that December day, he and two buddies were chopping at the ground, creating a foxhole only about a foot deep. The shells were coming down so heavily that they stopped digging and lay down together on their right sides in the shallow foxhole, with Abramson in the middle.

“I remember it being dusk, and the next thing I knew, it was morning,” he recalled. “As I looked up, there were first-aid men standing over the foxhole. They wanted to help me up. I held up my hand for them to grab it, and that was the last thing I remembered for three days. I didn’t know I had been wounded.”

Throughout the night, the men had been showered by the shrapnel. Abramson suffered two broken bones in his leg, a broken knee, broken ribs, a punctured chest and a punctured lung. The left side of the body that had been exposed caught all of the damage.

His two buddies were killed.

Abramson was taken to a M*A*S*H hospital then transferred to a hospital in Dijon, France, where he endured six major surgeries to put his body “back in one piece again.”

He spent his rest and recuperation in Marseilles and concluded his French sojourn in Paris before his flight back to New York.

photography by joel lerner On the overnight train from Marseilles to Paris, German-American actress Marlene Dietrich was aboard to entertain the troops. Abramson experienced some difficulties and was attended to by medics, but Dietrich comforted him, even departing with a kiss.

“I call it my 15 minutes of fame,” he laughed.

Abramson was medically discharged and awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Sharpshooter Badge and a shared Presidential Citation from the Century Division. He was recently invited to the French Legion of Honor.

Born Jan. 10, 1926 in Chicago, Abramson enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 and was a reservist until he could start basic training at Camp Wheeler, Ga. After he was assigned to the Century Division, he stepped on a troop ship in New York and set out for Europe.

It took about two weeks to zigzag the Atlantic Ocean and to avoid German submarines that were preying on

Making their way up 900 miles, the men alternated fighting, marching and motoring through French and German territories until they reached the Ardennes.

Abramson remembered the horrific effects of war.

“Those of us who survived the battlefields of WWII, I don’t think there was one exception who did not suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder — before they invented the

term,” he said. “I was in rough shape mentally for a number of months.”

After some time, he enrolled in college again and soon thereafter met Doris, with whom he is celebrating 67 years of marriage this month. Having a happy marriage was part of the secret to getting through that sensitive time after the war. The couple moved to Skokie 35 years ago. They have 11 grandchildren and are soon to be blessed with their first great-grandchild.

Abramson, 88, and his wife have spent a great deal of time traversing the world and volunteering for various organizations, but Abramson’s favorite job is volunteering for Honor Flight Chicago, which takes World War II veterans on full-day excursions around Washington, D.C. Thinking about his personal trip in 2009 moves him to tears.

“Most of us discharged from military services, we came home to no accolades, no parades, no welcomes or anything.

We were handed a bus or train ticket and pat on the back with a ‘Good luck, soldier,’ ” he recalled.

Describing the Honor Flight experience, his voice occasionally breaking, Abramson continued.

“We arrived at Midway Airport to a party — music, food, dancing and singing at 4 a.m. All along the airport, there were strangers that were applauding, there were massive crowds waving flags and shaking the hands of the veterans. It was the homecoming that we had not had when we came home from our service.”

One of the highlights for Abramson did not take place on land but on the plane. Volunteers pre-arranged to have family and friends write and send in letters. Once aboard, they started calling out “mail call” and each veteran received a package of “letters from home.”

In the comfort of his peers, Abramson finally felt at ease sharing memories of his service in the war.

“Re-establishing connections with those men and women who stood beside you in battle was an experience,” Abramson noted. ■

THE ACTING WORLD IS HER OYSTER ■ by katie rose mceneely Winnetka native Caroline Kingsley Rau is performing in First Folio’s production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”

Reading: Right now I’m reading “Daring Greatly,” Brene Brown’s book. She’s a psychologist who had a really big TED Talk about vulnerability, which I think is interesting for an actor. It’s kind of a whole different way of looking at vulnerability. It’s

but nothing in particular. I kind of listen to anything — I’m musical tofu. I’ll absorb whatever’s around me and enjoy it.

I like podcasts a lot; a couple I get really into are the Mark Marin podcasts. He’s a comedian, but he talks to people about their lives. And, of course, NPR; I love “Fresh Air” and “This American Life.” But I also love to listen to my friends’ music; one of my good friends is in a funk band called “whysowhite,” so I bop to that while I’m driving.

I have a group that I work with, called Witch Hazel, and they perform at this performance art showcase called Salonathon on Monday nights at Beauty Bar. I go and watch my friends put

a really fun play, it’s great summer picnic, Shakespeare outdoor performance. It’s a very bawdy Shakespeare comedy. There’s a lot of double entendre.

I live in Logan Square; a lot of the actors are from the city, so we all commute. The performance runs through the second weekend in August (Aug. 10).

Eating: I have been eating a lot of food from the Dill Pickle Co-Op. It’s a mini grocery store; my favorite thing every morning is Barbara’s Peanut Butter Puffins and all the great fruit. And I’m growing my own tomatoes on my deck. The other day I ate a tomato and basil salad with [my own produce]. And whatever junk is on the rehearsal snack table. And a lot of leftover hot dogs.

What is your favorite mistake?

Choosing to be an actor. It’s tough, but it’s so awesome, so fun. In general, there was a time in school when I was choosing between pre-med and doing a play, and I was like, I want to do the play—and that’s the classic mistake, not being a doctor. I’m always really happy that I’m following my passion and doing what I love. ■

Following: I would say I am following Salonathon. It’s a community that’s been growing, from the once-a-week performance showcase to finding ways for performers to go. We’re going away to Camp Wandawega for a week to write together. I’m following a lot of my friends who are artists; it’s really exciting in Chicago right now. One of my friends is a cartoonist, and he does these things called “Ladypuns.” Like Gerogia O’Reefe instead of Georgia O’Keefe.

Activity: I’m playing Mistress Quickly in “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” who is sort of a wily servant. The plot revolves around Falstaff, one of the most-loved Shakespearean characters. He’s a fat bastard, just a hot mess. He decides he’s gonna seduce two of the women in his town. They figure it out and they come to my character to try and arrange the tricks they’re going to play on him to get him back. It’s

Clothing concept is growing up ■ by s.h. sweet Seven years ago, a new and improved Babydreams opened in Highland Park.

The store’s success encouraged the owners to open a second store down the block on Central Avenue last week.

The new store — Toddler — is dedicated only to this age group, through nursery school and possibly into kindergarten.

“Our customers have been begging us to do this for years,” says Vicki K riser, a resident for more

The artistic style and design of the store came from co-owner Kay Schwartz, who grew up in and still lives in Highland Park.

Schwartz has been involved in retail in Highland Park more than 30 years. She began sewing clothing for her own children and expanded that when other mothers asked where they could buy such cute things.

Babydreams — which focuses on newborns through 24 months — specializes in private label clothing called Daydreams after one of Schwartz’s earlier stores.

“This is clothing customers know will look good even when it’s dirty or paint is smeared on it. This is not throw-away clothing,“ she notes. “Our outfits are meant to be washed

when they’ve stepped outside their comfort zone — except for “one year when we tried to sell brown sweaters.”

The stores feature a Grandparent’s Club.

When grandparents purchase an item and make at least a $25 donation to Children’s Memorial Hospital, they can ask for a discount on any item they purchase after that.

From weddings to the White House, North Shore orchestra is in demand ■ by gregg shapiro North Shore resident and musician Don Cagen and I go way back — all the way to fourth grade at Madison Elementary School in Skokie.

Since that time, Cagen has made a name for himself and his Don Cagen Orchestra, becoming one of the most in-demand wedding and special event musical acts in the region. Cagen’s 25 years of professional and performance experience includes affiliations with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Brass Band and Fulcrum Point New Music Project, to name a few. Cagen, and his wife singer Becky, even appeared in the Dana Carvey movie “Opportunity Knocks.”

One of the busier men in show business, Cagen took a few minutes recently to answer questions.

Gregg Shapiro: Don, my earliest memory of you is seeing you walking through the halls of Lincoln Junior High School in Skokie with your trumpet case. How old were you when you first started playing trumpet?

Don Cagen: I started trumpet studies in fourth grade, so about age 10. I actually chose the clarinet, but the music teacher said I would be better suited to the trumpet.

Thanks, Mr. Fleming [laughs]!

GS: Did you play any other instruments as a child?

DC: We had a small electronic organ at home that I would noodle on a little.

DC: No professional musicians, but music was certainly always in the house and encouraged. Family lore says that an early conductor of a symphony orchestra in Milwaukee was a relative on my mom’s side.

I would love to know more about this.

GS: When we were kids, trumpets were making a massive comeback in popularity thanks to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Would you say that Alpert’s success as a trumpeter played a role in your interest in the instrument?

DC: Absolutely. Alpert was a huge star. But there were many other influences, including Doc Severinsen, Louis Armstrong, Harry James and classical trumpeters Maurice Andre and Adolph Herseth. Plus, of course, there were the rock bands in the 1970s that used horns, including Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears.

GS: At what age did you think you might want to make music your professional career?

DC: In high school my playing started to

blossom. I was first chair of Illinois All-State Band, so I was lucky to have the chance to play with other motivated players and knew this is what I wanted to do with my life. I was very fortunate to have found my passion so young. I had an extraordinary high school band director, Dr. Charles Groeling, who was a mentor and brilliant musician.

My teacher the last two years of high school was Philip Smith, who this year is retiring after 36 years as principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Smith was very encouraging and helpful as I auditioned for music schools. Most importantly, my parents were very supportive of my choice.

GS: What can you tell me about your affiliation with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra?

DC: One of the best things about being a musician is the variety. I may play in a jazz group one night, play with my dance band at a gala or wedding the next night, and a symphony the day following. I joined the Evanston Symphony in 2000 as principal trumpet. While the orchestra is largely volunteer, there are quite a few active professional musicians, and some retired military and orchestral musicians. The group is extremely dedicated — we are all there for the joy of music making. I love it.

GS: The Don Cagen Orchestra is one of the most in-demand musical ensembles in the Chicago area. What would you cite as some of the Orchestra’s most memorable performance experiences?

DC: Well, the biggest thrill of our career was being chosen to perform at first inaugural ball of President Obama in Washington. We have played concerts on Wrigley Field. We have played amazing galas for Chicago’s biggest institutions - The Lincoln Park Zoo, Lyric Opera, Museum of Science and Industry, Northwestern Medical, Rush Medical. And the weddings are truly amazing. We have wonderful clients who are always allowing us to develop new concepts in music and entertainment.

GS: The Don Cagen Orchestra is also known to be popular among people seeking music for their wedding receptions. I have to ask – what band did you have perform at your wedding to Becky?

DC: [Laughs] We had awesome music at our wedding! Jazz violin star Johnny Frigo played the ceremony with pianist Allan Kaye and tenor Michael Cook from the CSO Chorus. Jack Kramer, a fine trumpeter, played our party with his band. We danced to every song the entire night. So much fun [laughs]!

GS: Earlier I mentioned Herb Alpert, who has been performing with his wife singer Lani Hall for many years. What does it mean to you to perform with your singing wife Becky?

DC: Becky is the biggest star in our family. She is a great communicator both on and off the bandstand. We are partners in life, business and music. That makes an incredible journey. How lucky can one guy be?

GS: You are also a lecturer at Columbia College. What do you like best about doing this?

DC: My teaching is in the Department of Audio Arts and Acoustics. I am passionate about teaching young sound engineers to think and listen as musical artists, not only as technology managers. This is also how I

treat the engineering team in our company, Cagen Music. I love the interaction.

GS: Do you teach or have you taught music privately?

DC: I taught privately during college for a few years. I occasionally do some coaching, and I would enjoy doing more in the future.

GS: What performances do you have lined up for the summer of 2014?

DC: This summer is full of weddings, we call it our “Summer of Love!” [laughs].

Incredible locations including the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Peninsula, Trump Tower, Navy Pier, Field Museum and the new Langham. We are working on a CD and concert project with four-time Tony nominee Gregg Edelman, and have a collaboration with Tony Award-winning producer Michael

Chapman.

GS: What do you like best about being a resident of the North Shore?

DC: I love the proximity to Lake Michigan, the beautiful neighborhoods and landscapes, especially the older areas. We have several 120 year-old mighty oak trees in our yard.

GS: What are some of your favorite cultural and dining spots on the North Shore?

DC: For culture there is beautiful Ravinia, of course, and there are always interesting concerts and programs on the Northwestern Campus, my alma mater. For dining, my top spots are Demetri’s for Greek food in Deerfield, Hole in the Wall for Italian in Northbrook, Bob Chinn’s for seafood in Wheeling, and Andy’s Custard in Evanston. ■

Tony award is beautiful moment for Evanston native

Evanston native Jessie Mueller is no stranger to accolades and awards for her acting.

The Evanston Township High School alumna has received rave reviews on stages from Chicago to New York to England. On June 8, she took home a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of singer/songwriter Carole King in Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, currently running at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.

Gregg Shapiro: Jessie, I’d like to begin by congratulating you on receiving the Tony Award for your portrayal of Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. What does the Tony Award mean to you?

JM: I love the song “Home Again” which is on Tapestry. It almost made it in the show! At one point, it started off the whole thing, but was ultimately replaced with “So Far Away.” I think one of the biggest challenges for the creative team, during the process, was deciding which songs to include. The canon is vast, and everything’s so good. They worked really hard to make sure all the songs had purpose in the piece. Even if it was a great song, if it didn’t work narratively, it didn’t stay.

GS: What are the challenges and rewards of portraying a living person?

JM: Well, you have a lot of research available and things

want to disappoint. It’s sacred in some people’s eyes - that music, that “personality.”

I remember asking a friend during the audition process, “Does this sound cool, or like something you shouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole?” And then the ultimate reward? After everything? Seeing Miss King and the smile on her face after she saw the show. I don’t read reviews, but she was the one “critic” whose opinion really mattered to me.

GS: In what ways would you say that growing up in Evanston had an impact on the person that you are today?

JM: I loved growing up in a diverse environment. I think

I didn’t want to disappoint.” | Jessie Mueller Jessie Mueller: It’s a huge honor; to be recognized by the community in this way is a little mind-boggling, especially considering the caliber of the ladies in the Leading Actress category this year. I feel very proud.

GS: We’re speaking after the passing of Gerry Goffin, Carole King’s ex-husband. Do you have anything you’d like to say about Gerry?

JM: He was a brilliant artist. There’s a great line in the play when Carole first meets Gerry and is exposed to his lyrics. She says, “There’s so much feeling in them, but it’s put so simply.” He knew how to say what people felt; complex thoughts and feelings in a package that people understood and could relate to — that’s an amazing gift. He was a deep and powerful soul, and we’re lucky that we have the legacy of his lyrics.

GS: Prior to portraying Carole in Beautiful, was the music of Carole King on your radar? If so, in what ways?

JM: More so through James Taylor. I grew up listening to him, thanks to my mom and dad. So I knew her music peripherally, because they were bandmates and friends and collaborators. But it was through the process of doing the show that I really got exposed to her. And, man, I’m glad I did.

GS: Do you have a favorite Carole King song, one that is either in the show or that wasn’t included in the show?

WINES OF THE WEEK ■ by johnson ho A common and misleading wine cliche: all great wines must be dry.

The term “dry” in wine jargon just means: not sweet. Period. A “fruity” aroma refers strictly to the smell but has no correlation the sweetness on the tongue. Nor do dry wines indicate anything about the richness or the mellowness on the tongue.

Gamey meats, spicy and/or salty dishes benefit from generously fruity wines (akin to ham with sweet glaze and duck with orange sauce). Cheap sweet wines often favored by elderly people created the poor perception, but it’s not relevant when it comes to proper food and wine pairings.

SATURDAY DINNER

2009 Chateau Lagrezette Malbec, Cahors, France; $39.97

Since 1503, this estate has stood in the shadows of its prestigious northern neighbors in the Bordeaux region. Its iron-rich soil provides the nutrients required for the Malbec grape to thrive and grow into a blockbuster of a wine.

In contrast to Bordeaux, Cahors’ inland location and rustic cuisine did not lend itself for convenient trade routes or noble vacation refuge for wealthy merchants or aristocracy. Those handicaps abated when a wealthy investor decided to update and upgrade this gem in the rough a couple of decades ago.

With ancient vines providing vast amounts of subsoil minerality and modern vinification techniques in the cellar, Chateau Lagrezette spearheaded the new era of internationally acclaimed quality for the region.

Brimming with black fruit flavors and dried flower bouquet, the initial taste of leathery tannins transitions into a blackberry/purple plum cobbler aromas after an hour of decanting. Lamb shank, hearty stews, chili, smoked meats and meaty pasta dishes yearn for such a muscular wine. Comparable quality wines from Bordeaux cost much more.

2009 Chateau des Jacques Moulin-A-Vent, Beaujolais, France; $28

The famous Beaujolais region became popular as the casual quaffing wine at bistros across France. During the Middle Ages, their top vineyards commanded the same respect as the great sites of Burgundy to the north. That reputation suffered after centuries of civil strife and big wars that saw the men tending the vineyards and making the wines perish. Most farms turned into sharecropper operations where the landlords took 3/4 of the proceeds from the sale of the crops. The ensuing cycles of poverty and neglect took its toll on the once-fine reputation.

In the 1990s, several wealthy winery owners from Burgundy decided to reverse the woes by investing generously in the vineyards and cellars. The hamlet of Moulin a Vent (“Moolan uh Von,” meaning weather vane) has always stood out as the site for the most opulent wines of the region for centuries.

Decidedly redolent of a black cherry pie with a mellow finish after 30 minutes of decanting, classic dishes ranging from omelets, quiche, ham sandwich (“Croque Monsieur”), cold cuts, smoked salmon, BBQ chicken and grilled vegetables make natural partners.

2009 Domaine de Noire Elegance, Chinon, Loire Valley, France; $23

The bucolic Loire River Valley about a hundred miles south of Paris is best known as the Chateau region where royal and aristocratic families chose to vacation during the summer. They quickly embraced the light crisp white wines from the villages of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume with fresh river catches — e.g. mussels, clams, frogs and trout.

However, far less well known are the exquisitely charming red wines made from the floral Cabernet Franc grape found in the villages like Chinon. Much lighter and lower in alcohol content, the finest estates of Chinon (“Sheenon”) excel in producing aromatic reds to complement fresh water seafood, rabbit, poultry and veal loin recipes with tomatoes, mushrooms or browned shallot/garlic/almond butter sauces as well as delicate cheeses. Best after 30 minutes of decanting.

Hair extensions are one of the hottest trends in the beauty industry. Long full hair is often equated with youth and beauty; the ability to accomplish the effect within hours epitomizes instant gratification. Hollywood stars have been secret consumers of hair extensions for years; it is only recently that stylists to the stars admit to utilizing them, making them of interest and readily available to the girl next door.

I maintain that hair is closely tied to our identity, selfexpression and confidence. There are countless reasons that clients might opt for hair extensions, including of course masking hair loss (genetic or illness related), cosmetic enhancement, or simply for a special event.

There are also many types, forms and applications of hair extensions, such as laser-beam, lock-method, keratin bond, fusion, seamless tape or clip-in. I suggest using only quality human hair with any extensions that are directly applied to hair. (Synthetic clip-ins are acceptable for an evening out with very sporadic use, but may be damaging with longer term or repeat use) Poorly applied strands or low quality bonding techniques are easily detected by the untrained eye and may ultimately result in damage, making it critical to seek out the exper-

tise of a trained technician.

Formal house becomes family home

The high-ceilinged family room is “Leider Central” when family comes to call.

■ by thomas connors Deerfield isn’t all that far from Lake Forest. But when you live in one town and your grandkids are in the other, the distance is more than a matter of miles.

“We had a great house in Deerfield,” says Jim Leider, “but with our grandchildren living in Lake Forest, we decided to move closer to them.”

He and his wife, Peggy, found a handsome brick Georgian — but as with many vintage homes, the place was a project waiting to happen.

“We loved the location and basic layout,” says Leider, “but it was really in need of re-doing.”

Working with Lake Forest Landmark Development Company — a design/build firm — the couple freshened up the home and added a wing to house a family room, library lounge off a new kitchen, and a master suite upstairs.

“We are gardeners and wanted to bring the outdoors in,”

says Leider. “We love the light filling the house.”

Once the envelope was just the way they wanted it, they brought in Martin Horner to fill it out.

“It was a fairly formal house,” notes Horner, “and they wanted more of a family home.” While the updated program serves to make the house a welcome destination for the grandchildren, as Horner observes, “This is still very much a grown-up house.”

room, with French doors to the terrace and a handsome fireplace, can easily handle sizable get-togethers — but also fit the couple to a T when they’re home alone. Done in earth tones and outfitted with an antique walnut mantel, iron chandelier, and a handsome 19th-century English armoire to hold the television, it is surprisingly understated.

“You could have chocked this room full of furniture and drapery,” admits Horner, “but my clients are minimal traditionalists.”

That sensibility is evident in the inviting, open area adjacent to the kitchen.

“The Leiders didn’t want a separate breakfast room and a separate library,” explains Horner, “so we created a multipurpose space that serves various functions.” Graced with a bow and built-in bookshelves, the bright, casual spot is ideal for quiet moments, savoring a morning coffee or reading.

“When it’s just us here,” says Leider, “this is one of our favorite places in the house.”

The lounge-like breakfast room, with direct access to the garden, functions throughout the day as a spot to relax and take in the outdoors.

Club chairs clad in a vibrant shade of red pop against the white walls. A pedestal dining table assumes an almost sculptural presence in the visually restrained space. And here, as in the family room, the Leiders have opted to live without window treatments in order to optimize the views and light.

MAKING HIS CASE Lake Forest’s humble Hanrahan finds his baseball home — on the mound ■ by kevin reiterman sports@northsoreweekend.com Connor Hanrahan never will forget the slider he hung to a Case Western Reserve hitter.

With the bases packed like a Lollapalooza concert, the Lake Forest High School graduate — making his first-ever collegiate pitching appearance — tried to wriggle out of a stressful jam in the eighth inning of Denison University’s season opener on March 1.

Instead, the 6-foot-5, 180-pound Hanrahan threw a mistake, and Case Western’s Andrew Frey smoked a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence.

The grand slam was … prodigious. It left the park in a blink of an eye.

“You knew right when he hit it, that it was gone,” said Hanrahan.

“Actually,” he added, “it was kind of amazing seeing the ball come off his bat. I wanted to tip my hat to him.”

It also was a moment that Hanrahan never, ever wants to forget.

Before leaving the Case Western baseball field in Cleveland, Hanrahan managed to “snag one of the game balls.”

He needed to own a memento.

With a red magic marker, the freshman relief pitcher inscribed these words between the ball’s red stitches: DU vs. Case Western … 3-1-14 … 2-2 bases-loaded grand slam.

“I’m keeping it so that I don’t forget (how it feels to give up a bases-clearing home run),” Hanrahan said. “It’s a reminder.”

The ball has become one of his cherished possessions.

During the season, he kept it in his locker, tucked inside his black Wilson glove. He even brought it home for the summer.

It’s not a show ball. It’s not a trophy for the bedroom.

Nope, Hanrahan, an economics major planning to minor in psychology, hauled it out at every practice last spring. It was his play-catch, warm-up ball.

The trick? Finding a throwing partner.

“Some of the other freshmen on the team refused to play catch with it,” said Hanrahan, with a bright smile. “They said the ball is cursed.”

That one of his top relievers — Hanrahan wound up pitching 38 innings and recording one win and two saves — was holding on to a “hexed” ball was news to Denison head coach Michael Deegan.

“I didn’t know about that,” admitted Deegan, during a phone interview on Aug. 1. “But I can see that from Connor.

He cares. He’s got a high-care level. And when you play at the collegiate level, that’s how you have to be.”

Congressman, this 19-year-old right-hander is not one to take anything for granted. He wasn’t exactly a lock to make this Division III program located in Granville, Ohio.

In fact, he was a self-described long shot.

After leading Lake Forest High School’s 2013 team in hitting (.338) and sacrifice bunts (4), he went to Denison’s fall tryouts as an unknown infielder.

That .338 BA looked good on paper, and it was great for the psyche. But, really now, leading his high school team in hitting? Hanrahan remains incredulous about that — right along with Lake Forest head coach Ray Del Fava.

“After the season, Coach Del Fava joked about it,” said Hanrahan, known mostly for his awesome bunting. “And I took no offense at all. It’s my senior year, and I’m hitting seventh, eighth or ninth in the batting order … and I wind up leading the team in hitting.”

Becoming a pitcher? Pure serendipity.

For the first 17 years of his life, the mound was pretty much foreign soil to Hanrahan.

It’s where he occasionally went for coach/pitcher conferences.

But during the summer of 2013, LF’s American Legion baseball team needed a pitcher — any pitcher — in the worst way and at the last minute.

Hanrahan was game. He threw himself, if you will, into the mix.

“I told Coach (Mike) Nilles that I’d give it a go,” said Hanrahan. “I had no idea what I was doing. I winged it.”

He had a fastball. It “whistled” in at a modest 79 miles per hour.

A curve ball? A what?

“I didn’t know how to throw a curve ball,” he admitted.

“Before the game started, I went over to Luke (Turelli) and asked him if I had the right grip. He said, ‘Hold it like this.’ It worked.”

At the Denison tryouts, Hanrahan held his own as a second baseman. But, in an effort to enhance his chances of making the club, he went out on a limb.

“He volunteered to pitch,” said Deegan. “I think he saw an opportunity.”

“As an infielder, the coaches saw that my arm had some whip action,” said Hanrahan.

Denison’s coaches also liked his delivery.

“It’s kind of funky,” said Deegan. “He can be deceptive — especially against right-handed hitters.”

“It’s a weird arm slot, not normal for a pitcher,” said Hanrahan, who throws from a three-quarters arm slot.

“My ball has a lot of natural tail to it. It’s from turning twos (double plays) at second base.”

Hanrahan admitted that trying out for second base made him a “nervous wreck.” Pitching did just the opposite.

“I take on a different persona when I’m on the mound,”

he said. “I feel absolutely zero pressure when I pitch.”

“I really like his competitive level,” Deegan said. “We put him out there last year because he gave us a chance to win.”

After learning that he made the team in the fall, one of the first things he did was write two letters and a slash inside the bill of his cap: W/O. W for walk.

O for on.

“I wrote it to remind me that I was a walk-on,” said Hanrahan. “I wrote it to bring myself back down to earth.

And I plan to write that on the inside of my cap every year.”

The other thing he did after making the team was play flag football.

As a member of Denison’s baseball team, which competes annually in the school’s flag football league, he lined up at free safety and was having the time of his life — until he went up to make an interception and came down with a shattered left collarbone.

“Twenty-four hours after making the baseball team, I break my collarbone. I was devastated,” said Hanrahan.

“I’m thinking, ‘Did I blow everything?’ “ He broke it in three places and needed two plates and eight screws.

“The surgeon said putting it back together was like a jigsaw puzzle,” said Hanrahan.

And how did the people in his world react?

“My mom (Caryn) freaked out — just like I thought she would.”

“My dad (Greg) wasn’t happy — but he did ask, ‘Did you at least make the catch?’ I did.”

And then, with arm in sling, he had a meeting with his coach.

“Coach Deegan put a dagger into my fear,” said Hanrahan.

“He told me that I possibly went from being one of the first guys out of the bullpen to maybe the 10th pitcher on the team. That’s what he left me with. That was his way of motivating me.”

It worked.

Despite the injury and despite the grand slam on Opening Day, Hanrahan turned out to be a trusted reliever for the Big Red. He made a team-high 21 appearances and ended up with a sparkling 0.56 earned run average in conference play (3.08 overall).

Watching from a distance, Del Fava couldn’t be any more proud of his former player — or more enlightened.

“In hindsight, we should have given him an opportunity to pitch for us,” said LF coach. “We thought about it. We knew he had a good arm. We knew he had potential. But at the time, he was too valuable to us as position player. And he never forced the issue. He never pushed it.

“His future,” Del Fava added, “obviously is on the mound." ■

A WHIRLWIND ROMANCE...

■ by bill mclean sports@northsoreweekend.com If Bina Saipi appears wobbly these days, there’s a good reason.

The New Trier junior has been riding a carousel of rousing success on soccer pitches for the past 14 months, beginning with her promotion from the Trevians’ freshman ‘A’ squad to the varsity in May 2013.

“It’s been unreal,” says Saipi, an attacking center-midfielder.

The wonderful, dizzyingly rundown: • Saipi started five varsity matches at the end of her freshman season after the call-up, including a Class 3A sectional semifinal and final.

• Saipi (five goals, seven assists) played an integral role as a sophomore, helping the Trevians (31-1) capture the 3A state title after netting the first goal of a 4-0 defeat of Loyola Academy in a sectional final.

• Saipi battled for FC United’s U-16 Select team, which reached the national semifinals last month at the US Youth Soccer Championships in Germantown, Md. Off the pitch?

More super news: • Saipi verbally committed to play soccer at DePaul University.

“I didn’t think I was a good enough to play college soccer until the end of my freshman year,” admits the 5-foot-6 Saipi, a Wilmette resident. “My first practices on varsity, I was so scared, so nervous going against future Division-I players.

“I remember thinking, ‘I made varsity — wow!’ It’s been amazing, so amazing, from that point to now. That weekend (June 6-7) we won state was the best weekend of my life. What I loved about it was being a part of a team that was based so much on chemistry.”

That weekend for Saipi began with a pink marble, which had been placed, by a coach, on a pillow in her hotel room.

Each Trevian received one on the eve of NT’s 1-0 semifinal win over Waubonsie Valley.

Each marble signified an opportunity.

Every Trevian got another marble before NT’s 1-0 defeat of St. Charles East for the state championship.

“Bina bought in, physically and mentally,” Trevians coach Jim Burnside says. “She saw each practice and each game as an opportunity to get better as a player and as a teammate. There’s no doubt she will continue to value the opportunities she gets in soccer.

“Since we brought her up [to varsity],” he adds, “she has been willing to work herself into the ground for the team and her teammates. Bina brought a real high level of intensity, an extremely high work rate and a never-say-die mentality to our team.”

Saipi’s “0-60 speed” — Burnside-speak for “first few steps” — is blurry-fast and one of her salient strengths, in addition to her toughness, hops and abilities in the air.

“She has that acceleration, that burst of speed,” Burnside says. “Her first three steps … some of the quickest I’ve ever seen. And she’s learned how to use that quickness in a sport that’s all about stopping and starting and losing your defenders.”

Saipi temporarily lost her ability to breathe pain-free after suffering a broken nose as a middle school student. But that didn’t stop her from participating in a field day at school.

“There she was, after surgery, running around all day,” says NT junior goalkeeper Dani Kaufman, who verbally committed to the University of Maryland last month. “Can you believe that? Tough … Bina is so tough. You need someone like her in the midfield, constantly going back and forth, back and forth. It’s a hard position, but she can handle it because her work ethic is one of the best things about her.”

Saipi took it easy last weekend, attending Lollapalooza in Chicago with friends on Aug. 3, a day after her family and dozens others gathered at home to celebrate her commitment to DePaul. Saipi’s 26-year-old sister, Armira, graduated from DePaul. Her other sister, 20-year-old Biondina, is a biology major at the school in Lincoln Park.

“I love the campus and the city, and after meeting the coach [Erin Chastain] and learning about the soccer program, I knew it would be a good fit for me,” says Bina Saipi, whose father, Agim, played soccer while growing up in Macedonia. “Plus it’s in the Midwest, close to home.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing Division I soccer.”

Saipi was in a hotel parking lot in Maryland when she made one of the most important phone calls of her life. On the other end was Chastain, who in 2013 guided the Blue Demons to a 13-6-2 record — the best winning percentage

in program history.

“She wanted me to call her when I was ready to make a decision,” Saipi recalls. “So I did, before our first pool play game [at last month’s US Youth Soccer Championships; her team won 5-0]. Then I called my parents.”

The surname, Chastain, screams soccer, even to casual fans of the world’s sport. DePaul’s eighth-year women’s soccer coach married Chad Chastain, whose sister, Brandi Chastain, scored the match-winning penalty kick in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

Among Saipi’s college teammates, beginning in the fall of 2016, will be recent graduate Lucy Edwards of reigning Class 2A champion Lake Forest High School and 2013 NT graduate Jessica Weaver, a midfielder who netted 26 goals and dished 24 assists in her prep career before sustaining a season-ending injury early in her senior season.

Saipi chose to end her competitive basketball days in the summer before sophomore season.

“Soccer took over,” she says. “I’d known at that point that soccer was it, that I would focus totally on soccer and do all I could to become a better player every year.”

Burnside gets to enjoy that kind of thinking from a valuable player for two more years. He can’t wait to see how it translates in matches.

“I’ve asked Bina to try new things in the midfield,” the coach says. “She’s not afraid to do that; she trusts her coaches. Her growth as a player, from the end of her freshman year until now, has been huge, tremendous. Bina is a pure athlete and an extremely competitive player, but she also has a fun-loving side … a side we like to see from all of our players.”

Arrive early for a New Trier match to catch a glimpse of that side. Moments before the start of each kickoff, Saipi and Kaufman perform a routine together.

Both soar near each other, with Saipi’s right shoulder bumping Kaufman’s left shoulder at the apex of the synchronized leaps.

“That always gets us ready, always gets us pumped,” Kaufman says.

Notable: The third New Trier junior soccer player to verbally commit to a college last month was forward Kelly Maday (University of Illinois). She tallied 19 goals and delivered a team-high 22 assists for the state champions last spring. ■

A PERFECT FIT — NOW Playing college ball at Columbia is a real prize for Loyola Academy’s Elston ■ by bill mclean sports@northshoreweekend.com Had Sarah Elston immediately put on the T-shirt she caught in the stands — after it had been launched from a mini cannon at a Columbia University women’s basketball game — and attempted to walk, she would have likely stumbled.

The short-sleeved top would have swallowed her, neck to toe.

Elston, a Loyola Academy senior forward/center, was 7 when she made that memorable grab in New York City.

The size of the prize?

“XXL,” Elston recalls.

A better fit for her, beginning in the fall of 2015, will be her status as a student-athlete at … Columbia University.

A varsity starter since her sophomore season, the 6-foot-1 Elston committed to the Ivy League school in late June after attending a CU Lions basketball camp.

“I’ve always loved the city and the campus,” says Elston, a Bannockburn resident who was born in Chicago, moved to New York with her family at the age of 3 and returned to the Chicago area six years later. “Columbia … it’s an amazing school, and it’s a place where I want to reach my academic and athletic goals.”

Elston ranked third among teammates in scoring (8.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) for a Class 4A sectional semifinalist last winter, shooting 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.

The righty was a handful for opponents inside the paint as well.

“Sarah can handle the ball well, with both hands,” Ramblers coach Jeremy Schoenecker says. “Some of her post moves … she’s strong with her left hand; it’s one the best in the area. She’s a complete player who understands opponents’ strengths and weaknesses.

“Sarah,” he adds, “plays a lot, really enjoys the game.

She’s one of those kids you know you’re going to get the most out of, no matter what.”

The future Lion played AAU ball for the Illinois Lady Lightning this summer. At a tournament in Nashville, Tenn., where her team placed third, Elston hit all four of her three-point attempts in a game. One of her strengths that should come in handy at the next level is her smooth catch-and-shoot ability.

“I want to improve my shooting in other situations, as well as work on driving and finishing better, beating my defender with my first step,” Elston says. “I’m not as consistent of a shooter as I want to be. I’ve worked with a ton

of great shooting coaches, and it’s nice knowing that when I miss a shot, I usually know why I missed it. I then make sure I correct [her form] the next time I get the opportunity to take a similar shot.”

The theme of the Ramblers’ 2013-14 season was to get another shot at netting a state trophy at Redbird Arena in Normal. Elston had played as a freshman reserve on LA’s fourth-place squad (26-9) in 2011-12, scoring three points in a semifinal loss and four in the third-place game.

LA didn’t get off to a promising start last winter. But Schoenecker’s crew found its traction near the end of the third quarter of the season, particularly on Feb. 1.

State-ranked Fremd visited Loyola then.

The Ramblers edged the Vikings 48-46.

“We were struggling [in late December and parts of January],” Elston recalls. “But we did play much better as the playoffs neared and came together well during the postseason.”

As an eighth-grader, Elston came to the conclusion that basketball would be her thing, her main sport. Volleyball, soccer and softball couldn’t match the thrilling pace of hoops.

“Two years earlier, the love I had for basketball was real,” says Elston, who is thinking about majoring in political science, minoring in Spanish and pursuing a career as a homicide detective for the FBI. “I had a feeling it would be the sport I wanted to play more than any other.

“Every step of the way, I’ve received such great support from coaches.”

Columbia basketball coaches liked what they saw from Elston at that summer camp: a tallish guard who could shoot the trey in one possession and split post players on a driving layup in the next.

Elston also gave it her all during drills.

“How hard she works … that’s a big part of her personality,” Schoenecker says. “She’s a great kid to coach, and she has a really good heart.” ■

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean ROAMING THE SIDELINES FOOTBALL Lake Forest: Junior Jake Cirame will not be playing for the Scouts this fall. The 6-foot-1, 260-pound defensive end has transferred to Mount Camel.

Last fall, Cirame saw extensive time on varsity for the Scouts (9-3). He finished the 2013 campaign with 13 solo tackles.

He was credited with 2.5 quarterback sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Cirame is the younger brother of LF’s running back sensation Hub Cirame, who will play football for Davidson College this fall.

“I wish him well,” said Lake Forest head coach Chuck Spagnoli. “If he doesn’t want to be here, then … we’ll coach the guys we have.”

FOOTNOTES CLUB SOCCER Eclipse Select: Highland Park’s Zoe Redei, who plays for Eclipse Select, was the scoring star for the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team last week in Mexico City.

The junior forward, who will play collegiately at North Carolina, scored three goals in the two-game set against Mexico’s U-20 team. She had her team’s lone tally in 1-1 draw, while she scored both goals in a 2-0 win.

BETWEEN INNINGS BASEBALL Loyola Academy: Jack Yalowitz made a verbal commitment to the University of Illinois in late July. He was an all-conference pitcher/outfielder for the Ramblers last spring.

The left-handed hitting Yalowitz, who is ranked No. 37 in the Class of 2015 by the Prep Baseball Report, batted .273 with 21 RBIs and 17 runs.

On the mound, the lefty finished with a 2.79 ERA. He allowed 45 hits in 47.2 innings with 46 strikeouts.

Yalowitz plays in summer tournaments with Gravel Baseball, which is based in Willow Springs.

AT THE SHOOT-AROUND CLUB HOOPS Next Level Performance: Evan was Evan.

Evan Boudreaux played like a mad man at the AAU Division I National Championships in Louisville (July 25-28).

“He played possessed,” said Team NLP head coach Dickie Simpkins. “He had a monster tournament. He had his complete inside/outside game going.”

The 6-foot-7 Boudreaux, who will be a senior at Lake Forest High School, scored a double-double in every AAU tournament game. And he especially was “on” his game — 37 points, 16 rebounds — in a one-point loss to a team from New York during the elite eight round.

“We tried to defend our title but couldn’t,” said Simpkins, who coached Team NLP to an 11th-grade national title in 2013.

Boudreaux’s stock continues to shoot up.

“He played extremely well in July,” said Simpkins. “He now has 18 to 20 scholarship offers.”

That list includes Iowa, Penn State, Iowa State, Boston College, St. Louis, DePaul and a number of Ivy League schools.

Meanwhile, Lake Forest junior Lorenzo Edwards (6-5) was unable to compete in

summer tournaments after having minor knee surgery.

“He was disappointed he couldn’t play,” said Simpkins. “He’ll be fine for the winter (high school season).”

Fundamental U: Mike Weinstein will take it.

The Fundamental U founder and head coach was pleased with the final rating of his top 17U team. The Prep Hoops Illinois website ranked Fundamental U Black fourth behind three powerhouses: Illinois Wolves, Mac Irvin Fire and Central Illinois Net Game. The other teams in the top 10 include Chicago Lockdown, Illinois Stars, Southwest Illinois Jets, Illinois Irish, Quad City Elite and MeanStreets.

This squad finished the spring and summer with a 31-10 overall record. It went 5-0 in the Chi-Town Windy City Classic (July 11-13) and 6-2 in the Peach State Summer Showcase (July 16-20) before capping off the season in the Las Vegas Big Foot.

Before it was all over, Weinstein’s nineman squad turned into a M*A*S*H unit.

Highland Park’s Jacob Iden missed the July showcases with a chipped bone in his ankle, while Lake Forest’s Steve Vogrich was sidelined after sustaining a broken ankle in the final game at the Peach State. Point guard Drew Cayce missed action at Big Foot with a sprained ankle.

Bring on Michael Mangan.

The Loyola Academy senior guard filled the gap at Big Foot. In a 42-40 pool play win over Seattle Rotary, Mangan hit a floater off the glass at the buzzer.

“That was the game of the summer,” said Weinstein, “especially to win that game after Drew went down. It was a great upset win.”

And Mangan?

“Probably the most improved player in our program,” the coach said.

According to Weinstein, Lake Forest’s Noah Karras and Lake Forest Academy’s Diago Quinn continue to receive interest from Division I programs. In fact, the 6-10 Quinn now has seven offers: LaSalle, Fairfield, Bryant, Drexel, Marist, Robert Morris and Illinois State.

MIT is at the top of Vogrich’s list, while St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa has reached out to Mangan.

Meanwhile, the Fundamental 17U Gray team also had a successful summer.

It went 4-1 in the Windy City Classic and 5-1 in a showcase in Minnesota.

Lake Forest senior Tommy Trkla was impressive.

“He’s rebounded like a monster,” said Weinstein. “He’s really improved.”

CHIP SHOTS GOLF Mid-America Junior Golf Tour: Winnetka’s Bennett Cotten (Class of 2018) took third (76-76-152) in the Klein Creek Classic in Winfield, Ill (July 28-29).

Lake Forest’s Joe Eagan shot a 155 to finish in a tie for seventh.

Meanwhile, Lake Forest H.S. junior Emily Young earned runner-up honors (82-84-166) in the 12-18 girls bracket.

Emma Klimala of Glen Ellyn won with a 168.

At the Eagle Ridge Classic in Galena (July 31-Aug. 1), Northfield’s Justin Choi (2017) carded a 36-hole 151 to take fourth place. Winnetka’s Nick Iserloth shot a 153, which tied him for sixth place.

■ by patrick z. mcgavin sports@northshoreweekend.com “All the world’s a stage,” says Jacques in Shakespeare’s famous monologue from “As You Like It.” In Shakespeare’s telling, life is theater rendered as a succession of auditions. We all have our own arena or stage that we perform on. For the best high school basketball players in the country, July is that time.

The July evaluation period is the crucible that largely shapes the recruiting life of elite players. Reputations are often made or broken. The best players jet around the country and perform under heightened expectations under cutthroat stakes.

The opportunities, from both perspectives, are boundless.

Highland Park High School rising senior guard David Sachs is a prime example of a player who relishes the chance to elevate his national profile. Sachs, who will be a three-year starting point guard for the Giants this winter, has certainly made his presence felt on the North Shore.

He led the Giants in scoring and shot 54 percent from the field as Highland Park won 22 games, finished second in the Central Suburban North and stunned Lake Forest to reach the Class 4A sectional semifinals.

His college recruiting did not really match his level of accomplishment.

“A lot of scouting services have listed me as an underrated point guard that nobody seems to know that much about,” Sachs said. “I thought it was really time to prove myself.”

Pretty much everything conformed perfectly for Sachs in July playing with the Rising Stars club program. From a key showcase in Waukegan to an important national tournament in Las Vegas to the AAU Nationals at Louisville, Sachs demonstrated a striking skill set of shooting, passing, ball-handling and leadership that testified to his deepening maturity and growth.

the game, and it only deepens his confidence and assurance.

“Just playing with a skilled group of guys helped me a lot,” Sachs said. “The guys on my [club] team make me look that much better. I drive and kick to them, and they knock down shots.

“Playing with an elite level group has really sparked my game.”

The founder and publisher of the Illinois Prep Bulls-Eye scouting service, Roy Schmidt has been an outspoken advocate for Sachs. He watched Sachs up close at Louisville, draining three-pointers as though they were layups.

“I think he is a quintessential point guard,” Schmidt said. “He gets everybody involved, he plays under control, and he does a great job of pushing the ball up the court and makes open shots. And his range extends all the way out to the three-point line.”

Sachs played baseball and soccer before concentrating exclusively on basketball, when he arrived at Highland Park. That versatile background shows in his skill set, the superb hand and eye coordination and a strong grasp of the intangibles.

Shooters run the gamut. Some are born, others are made and Sachs fits comfortably in the middle. He worked hard since the end of the Giants’ season on his elevation and the position of the ball to get a clean, unobstructed look. At a basic level, he has simply worked to become the player he is.

“He just works every day,” said Luke Norcia, his high school and club teammate. “He’s always asking me to come over to the school and shoot with him. I don’t think a day goes by when he doesn’t work on his game.”

Two years ago, Sachs made the leap to varsity as the team’s starting sophomore point guard. He showed flashes, but he was clearly a work in progress. He struggled with turnovers.

“I think he was a little star struck, but he eased into the role and he became so much more confident,” Norcia said.

“The rest of the team just fed off of that.”

Sachs became more acclimated to the speed and rhythm of

the game. Last year he cut his turnovers down and increased his assists to four a game.

“My sophomore year was a big help, getting that experience was huge,” said Sachs.

According to HP High School coach Paul Harris, Sachs is a treat to coach.

“He’s a gym rat who has worked very hard on his game,” said Harris. “He’s not a guy that you have to push. He’s incredibly self-motivated who’s made great strides with his work habits and has a desire to be good.

“He’s got those qualities that are hard to teach,” the coach added. “He always wants the ball in his hands. Last year he hit two buzzer beating game-winning shots. He absolutely loves the game, and that’s reflected in how he practices and how he plays.”

Sachs has three offers, all Division II programs: Minnesota State, Winona State and Barry University, in Miami. He has drawn interest from Cornell, South Dakota State and MAC programs Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.

“I think he deserves bigger schools than what he is getting,” Schmidt said. “I think the main concern recruiters have had, from a defensive standpoint, whether he has the quickness and speed to guard players man to man.

“I think he does need the right fit in terms of having other players around him whose games are somewhat compatible or conducive to the way he plays. To my way of thinking, almost any school in the Ivy or Patriot League would fit that bill.”

Sachs played his part to perfection. The summer travel circuit is over, and now the focus shifts to high school, conditioning, workouts and open gyms where college coaches are likely to turn up at the Highland Park campus to see Sachs, Norcia and the other two returning starters, Hallvard Lundevall and Jordan Krawitz.

He now is waiting for the process to play out.

“I just love the game, and I’m going to continue to play it,” he said.” ■

Completing a hat trick Lea will be the third Waddle sister to play Division I soccer

■ by bill mclean sports@northshoreweekend.com Lea Waddle rode shotgun next to her sister, Georgia Waddle, for a seven-plus-hour car trip to Vanderbilt University in April.

Lea was a sophomore at Lake Forest High School.

Georgia was a junior political science major/soccer player at Northwestern University.

“Georgia kept grilling me, asking me what I want in a college, where I thought I’d feel most comfortable,” recalls Lea, an attacking midfielder on Eclipse Select’s U-16 soccer team.

Swirling inside Lea’s head during most of the 500-plusmile road trip that day: Study and play soccer at Northwestern or study and play soccer at Vandy?

Awaiting the pair of sisters in Nashville, Tenn., was Angela Waddle, another sister, another soccer player, another daughter of former Boston College soccer player Cara Cappelletti and former Chicago Bears wide receiver Tom Waddle.

Angela was a freshman midfielder at Vanderbilt and named to the 2014 Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

“On the way to Vanderbilt I also asked Lea, ‘Are you excited?’ and we discussed some of the pros and cons of both schools,” says Georgia, who started 13 of 19 matches for NU last fall, scoring two goals to go with two assists.

“She was a little nervous on the way down there. She liked the idea of going to Vanderbilt, but she wasn’t sure if she’d fall in love with it.”

Nashville charmed country-music-loving Lea, as did the campus and the overall atmosphere. What she heard from Commodores women’s soccer coach Derek Greene was also music to her ears.

“He had a set plan for the next few years,” Lea says. “I liked the direction of the program, and I wanted to help in any way I could. Plus Nashville, with its beautiful setting, reminds me a little of Lake Forest. It’s laid back, like I am.

“On our way home,” she adds, “I knew. I knew Vanderbilt was for me.”

Lea verbally committed to Greene, via phone, in early May. “When Georgia and I got home from the trip,” Lea recounts, “the first thing I said to my mom was, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere else.’ ” Lea Waddle went to Richmond, Va., in mid-July. All she did there was score what turned out to be the match-winning goal [on an assist from Highland Park resident Zoe Redei] for Eclipse Select in a 3-1 defeat of the Dallas Texans in the U-16 final of the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) Championships.

It marked the third time — in two summer seasons — she had returned home as a national champion. Eclipse Select’s U-15 squad captured an ECNL title and a US Youth Soccer Association title in 2013.

“Angela and I both love country music, but we are completely different soccer players,” says the 5-foot-6 Lea, who thoroughly enjoyed playing under-level tennis at LFHS the past two autumns, a diversion she plans to drop this fall.

“Angela is technical, very good with her feet. I like to run hard, play more of a physical type of soccer.”

Eclipse Select coach and Chicago Red Stars professional coach Rory Dames has coached Georgia, Angela and Lea. A fourth Waddle sister, 10-year-old Emersen, enjoys soccer, too. She weaves around defenders in Lake Forest Soccer Association matches.

But tennis might eventually woo her away from the soccer pitches.

“My mom,” Lea says, “is rooting for Emersen to pick tennis. My mom loves tennis; she plays practically every day.”

On the radio, practically every day, Tom Waddle voices opinions on ESPN 1000-AM. Lea is thinking about hitting the airwaves as a broadcaster after her competitive soccer days. But that’s at least six years from now. Lea still has plenty of soccer commitments and goals on her mind, as well as Luke Bryan concerts, Lollapalooza weekends, homecoming weekends, her next pair of cowboy boots and

more trips to Nashville.

“Lea loves soccer, like I do,” Georgia says. “She probably loves the sport more than any of her sisters do. She’s a hard worker when she plays, a player who covers a lot of ground.

Lea is a force in soccer, a definite difference-maker.”

Lea Waddle is as affable and magnetic off the pitch as she is productive on it.

“She’s a very happy person, a fun person to be around, positive and energetic,” says Georgia, a five-time State Cup champion (U-13-17) as a member of Eclipse squads.

“Leadership qualities … Lea certainly has a lot of those.” ■

Only one store in the country offers it — his Lake Forest restaurant off of Waukegan Road.

“It’s my hometown, so I wanted to do something different,” says McEssy, wearing a white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up in his office — which is so close to his favorite breakfast spot that even the hefty Grimace could walk there without panting.

In fact, aside from three choices of fresh-baked muffins (blueberry and glorious morning are the other two), that same Cape Cod-style store is the only one to serve omelettes on weekends.

His breakfast menu may be a rarity among the chain’s 35,000 restaurants, but his penchant for winning awards is not.

McEssy has earned hundreds of honors from McDonald’s Corp. over the decades, but none as sweet as the one he captured this year: the Fred L. Turner Golden Arch Award for outstanding restaurant management and service. It’s bestowed on only 1 percent of owner/operators worldwide.

“They give it seldomly — you can’t get a bigger one than that,” says McEssy who, surrounded by family, accepted the honor at the company’s worldwide convention in Orlando. “McDonald’s has been great for

With his training limited to law, McEssy knew he needed to surround himself with good people in the restaurant world, and some have stayed with him for more than 30 years.

After graduating from Marquette University ’s law school in 1964, McEssy practiced in Fond du Lac, Wis. Six years later, he walked out of a local bank as the manager of a McDonald’s he knew slightly was strolling in.

Given the ferocious competition in the fast-food industry, McEssy was asked what sets McDonald’s apart.

“They are very conscious of the quality and consistency of the food,” he says. “They have rigid training courses for owner-operators and for store personnel.”

Among the pictures in McEssy’s office is one with the late actor Paul Newman.

After McDonald’s introduced salads, the company struggled a bit with dressings.

Newman had created his own brand.

McEssy introduced him to the right people, and Newman’s Own began gracing McDonald’s premium offerings in 2003.

The partnership has raised tens of millions of dollars for charity.

Away from work, McEssy and his wife, Lois, volunteer and raise money for the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. Many of the graduates of the largest Catholic seminary in the country serve in the Archdiocese of Chicago. During a tribute dinner this spring, the McEssys received the 2014 Francis Cardinal George “Christo Gloria” Award.

“I’ve become very close with Cardinal George and the rectors,” says McEssy, whose name is on the Feehan Memorial Library & McEssy Theological Resource Center on campus. “Helping out there is a labor of love.”

In the next few years, McEssy hopes to expand to 50 stores around Illinois and Wisconsin (the next closest owner/operator in the area runs 23). In his 70s and already having worked far longer than most his age, has he thought about leaving the golden arches behind to start his golden years?“I’m in good health.
