he Metra train system — once known as the Chicago & North Western, as a stone bridge’s unalterable etching of its initials makes clear — is a comfortable way to travel between the North Shore and Chicago. For the most part, trains are on time and clean. Open seats are often simple to find.

Anyone who’s taken the trains from the nation’s largest city, New York, to its suburbs know the superiority of our service (especially since Metro-North’s bar car from Grand Central Station was axed in May).

Which brings us to car 553, the last remaining private club commuter car in the United States.

The car has been running the rails between Lake Forest and downtown since the dawn of The Great Depression. Phillip Armour, William McCormick Blair and other Chicago business titans were early members.

Though those who have never stepped aboard imagine a white-jacketed bartender, cigar-smoking passengers and masseuses, the reality is quite a bit different. It’s a quiet spot where you know your fellow travelers. A refrigerator holds a few six packs. No one has confused it with the Orient Express. Duo’s success? The pieces — like the two owners of Chalk Boutique who’ve selected them — couldn’t be more different, though they manage to complement each other like two standouts at the same soiree.

“We could say the same thing but form our sentences completely differently,” Kane says.

“It’s just the way our brains work,” Watrous adds. “We arrive at the same conclusions from completely different places.”

The two met and cobbled together an acquaintanceship on the floor of a Neiman Marcus, where Kane — a Midwestern native with an MBA and experience in fashion — helped Watrous — a bohemian

academic from northern California — pick out a suit for a talk she was giving at UC Santa Cruz. Watrous was a chapter short of completing her Ph.D. in English literature when her mother was diagnosed with cancer.

“I had this epiphany,” she recalls. “Life is really short, and being an academic to me was really an all-or-nothing position.”

After her mother passed away, Watrous decided to open a boutique in her honor.

“She was a public defender her whole life, so she was in court all the time and always had to dress for it,” Watrous says. “She always had a flair.”

Watrous knew Kane lived in Evanston and looked her name up in the phone book. Out of the blue, she called

her and asked if she wanted to start a business. Kane, who was about to accept another job outside of fashion, decided to take the risk. Six years later, Chalk is thriving in a breakneck industry, in large part due to Watrous’ and Kane’s unwavering faith in their initial vision.

“We unflinchingly believe in what we’re doing,” Kane says.

Watrous continues: “Our entire business plan is built on our vision of the North Shore woman, and what she needed up here that was different from what was already available.”

In practice, that meant bringing an “urban edge” and tiered pricing plan to a niche demographic in need of highend apparel. With prices ranging from $45 to “sky’s the limit,” one can find anything from a white T-shirt to a couture dress at Chalk, as long as it speaks to one of the owners in some way — whether it be through a “smart design element” or some new “twist” on a sartorial convention.

“It’s just happening authentically,” Kane says of their buying and editing process. “It’s not contrived. It’s just what we react to.”

“There is a thought process to it,” Watrous says, picking up Kane’s thread. “But the first reaction is very much a gut instinct. It’s like appreciating fine art.”

Still, perhaps the most integral aspect of their business is simply the event of shopping at Chalk, where water is served in champagne flutes and customers have access to the wisdom of two unique, stylish fashionistas.

“Customers have so many choices,” Kane starts. “A woman doesn’t even have to go into a store to procure something anymore.”

“It’s about the experience,” Watrous concludes. “About being welcomed. And about being encouraged to try something slightly beyond the parameters of one’s comfort.” ■

Last private club commuter car rolls along North Shore rails ■ by jake jarvi During rush hour at Ogilvie Transportation Center downtown, the platform to get on the Union Pacific Line up to the northern suburbs can get a little claustrophobic. Masses of people huddle outside of closed doors of every train car, waiting for them to open and the mad dash to grab a seat begins.

Unless, of course, you’re a dues-paying member of car 553, the last remaining private club commuter car in the United States.

In that case, wait for the crowds to pile onto the train and stroll up to the first car behind the engine — a vintage single-level car, unmistakably different from the two-level silver Metra cars — and climb the steps into the quiet solace of a private car for Lake Foresters and Lake Bluffians.

The private commuter car has been running the rails between Lake Forest and downtown since 1929. Officially called the “Deerpath,” but colloquially referred to as “the Millionaires’ Special,” the private car used to include a plush interior designed by Sears, a buffet, and a private porter named Lester Green, who would stay with the car during the day to accept package deliveries for members. Early members were names like Fred Wacker, Phillip Armour, and William McCormick Blair.

The 553 is a different beast. The distinct, matte look of the car comes from its origins as a 1960s mid-train lounge car with a faded brown stripe running its length, marked simply with its car number 553 next to the door. There’s an abundance of comfortable seating as original parlor car chairs line the windows. Through a doorway at the front of the car is the lounge —four tables where members can work on laptops or play cards.

Back in the heyday of the Deerpath, word is nail-biting bridge tournaments were the distraction of choice. Today, there’s no buffet or porter, but there is a fridge where members stock flats of bottled water and a few six packs of beer for the occasional happy hour. It’s a quiet place to ride in peace and a chance to socialize with neighbors.

Yearly dues buy plenty of room to ease into your morning if you catch the 7:50 a.m. train out of Lake Forest and unwind on your way home with the 5:03 p.m. train coming back. It may not be the lap of luxury it used to be, but it’s peace of mind and a welcoming community.

“We’re a consumer cooperative,” says Richard “Buzz” Norton, chief mechanical officer for the 553 and a member since 1971. “The only thing elite about this car is that our conductor wears a tie.

“We’ve been kind of a stealth car. Everybody knows about Deerpath, but nobody knows about this one.”

That all changed one Friday in May, when the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society offered everyone a chance to ride from Ogilvie to Lake Forest on the 553. Not one chair remained empty as the assembly rode in the historic car, hearing wonderful presentations on the commuter rail system from John Pierson, the archives chairman for the Chicago & North Western Historical Society, and the history of the commuter cars from Norton. Commuter club service resumed for one day as the historical society handed out packed lunches from Wisma and red and white wine in cups. You could see

who the regular members were by the Pabst Tall Boys in their hands and their amused expressions as they took in the tourists.

“I moved here about six years ago and a friend of mine said, ‘You should join the train car. It’ll change your life in a way,’ ” says TK Gore of Lake Bluff, a member for five years.

“It’s a great community of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff people. It’s been great for networking, meeting a lot of good guys. There’s so much history in the car that people embrace, it’s been really good.”

Once there were as many as 18 private commuter cars throughout the nation, and, at its most popular, there were three private cars lined up for the morning and evening commute from Lake Forest. Now, the 553 is the only one left. Raising costs associated with keeping a privately owned car on the tracks and the nebulousness of people’s modern work schedules have made the current members of the 553 a rarified group.

Back when the Deerpath first started, the Chicago & North Western Line needed a guarantee of 65 members to keep a private car on the tracks. Now, the group is 37 members strong, but most days there are only around 10 to 15 people taking the ride.

“I don’t think it takes much to see how our work habits have changed,” says Norton.

“People used to sit in the same chair, back and forth, every day to their same desk at the bank. We were much more fixed in our occupations then. The demographics of travel and people sitting at a desk 9 to 5 are gone.”

Still, the thrill of hopping onto the private car was palpable on the day the historical society invaded — the feeling of taking that exclusive ride that’s been operating for 85 years. The Church of the Holy Spirit honored the memory of long-time Lake Forest residents Jane and Mike Weeden during the consecration of The Jane and Mike Weeden Terrace this summer.

“We were blessed by their presence,” says Rob Krebs, a member of The Church of the Holy Spirit and a voice in the decision to name the terrace in the Weedens’ honor. “This is the perfect way to celebrate their contributions.”

Jane served as chairman of the church’s Altar Guild during the 1970s and 1980s, and Mike served as warden from 1988 to 1992.

The Jane and Mike Weeden Terrace replaces a set of stairs that once led to the church’s main entrance.

The Highland Park Historical Society is launching a yearlong effort to raise $120,000 to preserve the 19thcentury Stupey Cabin.

The funds will be used to bring the Stupey Cabin into compliance with landmark preservation standards as well as to provide necessary retroactive maintenance.

The 1847 Stupey Cabin is the oldest-standing structure in Highland Park. As part of the fundraising effort, The Highland Park Historical Society earned $1,500 by allowing The Onion, a satirical newspaper, to use the Stupey cabin as a backdrop for a recent photo shoot.

■ by joanna brown Decorating a house with Kandis Wrigley might be the easiest job in the world. In her eyes, anything goes.

“There are no rules,” says the founder of San Juan Ventures, a fine imported wood company that specializes in custom furnishings and architectural elements made from exotic native woods from Indonesia.

“What makes a home beautiful is its reflection of the owners’ diversity and interests in different directions. You give the space personality and color. You can weave antique pieces into even the most modern, urban design.”

The business was born from a 2003 vacation in Bali, when Wrigley fell in love with Indonesia and its culture. She watched woodworkers using techniques learned from their fathers and grandfathers to transform exotic woods into pieces she was eager to incorporate into her Lake Forest home.

“I was sending my designer pictures of furniture and telling her, ‘Don’t worry, it will work just fine,’ ” Wrigley recalls.

She came home with, among other pieces:

flooring, a six-foot coffee table, a table for behind the sofa and another for the foyer in her 1920s Mediterranean-style home.

It was then that San Juan Ventures was born, delivering the kind of custom work that Wrigley fell in love with to residential clients, as well as corporate and hotel properties around the world; think of tables made from tree roots and 24-foot slabs for a hotel’s bar.

The bulk of San Juan Ventures’s clients are designers with keen eyes for distinctive pieces, but her residential clients, Wrigley says, are often as interested as she is in the story behind the work. Clients browse photos of the company’s past projects for inspiration, and Balibased designers use the clients’ selections to source materials in Bali. Finished products are shipped around the world.

San Juan Ventures will consolidate its Chicago and Bali team into one location in Bali later this year; the local inventory is being sold at deep discounts. Wrigley says the change will help them manage a new, larger facility with greater efficiency (the 13-hour time difference is a killer), but she is quite proud of the business they run overseas.

Among other achievements, she pointed to the company’s certification from the Forest Stewardship Council. Though the annual auditing process is a time-consuming and expensive process, it confirms the business’s commitment to using sustainable, salvaged materials in a part of the world with a poor reputation for good business practices.

“When you see a photo of a root we’ve found on a dusty road with chickens and dogs around it, you have to have vision,” she says.

Consider the Indonesian pieces in Wrigley’s home today: urns holding lanai branches, antique wooden saddles mounted on the walls, reclaimed teak flooring, and hand-carved wooden columns separating two rooms. They could fit into any North Shore décor, she says.

“One of the things to remember is that these are statement elements, and they’re intended to be used sparsely and carefully in your design,” Wrigley says. “Even when you take a large element off a dusty road in Java, it can easily translate into a statement piece in any design and any style. It’s no different than a beautiful painting or a tabletop sculpture, but you have to want that.” ■

Bolton, a rising ninth-grade online student and one of the nation’s top 14-and-under singles players, stood ready to receive … candy.

Not a kick serve from an opponent.

“I wore that for Halloween, last year,” recalls the 5-foot-7 Bolton. “I was with two friends. It rained that day.

“We got a lot of candy.”

It has been impossible for Bolton to mask her talent on tennis courts all over the country — and world. Ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region and No. 12 nationally (Class of 2018) by tennisrecruiting.net, she was one of four U.S. girls in the 14-and-under singles division selected to compete at events in England and France this past January. Former pro tour player and current United States Tennis Association (USTA) coach Jamea Jackson served as the quartet’s coach at the Nike Junior International Teen Tennis (England) and Les Petits As (France) tournaments.

Bolton reached the semifinals of the latter.

Past Les Petits As champions include former world No. 1 professionals Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters and Martina Hingis.

“Elysia is very competitive for her age, extremely committed to the sport,” says Mark Bey, Championship Training Coordinator at the Glenview Tennis Club. “Not all kids are willing to make the big sacrifices she has.

“The desire she has to do well and to improve her game … that’s an exceptional trait in a child,” he adds.

But Bolton doesn’t wear tennis blinders. Her relationship with her younger sister, rising fifth-grader Sarah, means way more to her than any national ranking does.

Sarah Bolton has HBSL, a rare brain disorder, and uses a wheelchair.

“The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is help Sarah get dressed,” says Elysia, who was born in Australia and moved to Lake Forest with her family at the age of 2.

“She’s really funny, really outgoing, and she’s not afraid to go up and interact with anyone. Sarah has inspired me.

Wins and losses in tennis — they don’t matter; they really don’t. There are more important things in life.”

Sarah, like Elysia, embraces athletic challenges, from swimming to sled hockey to horseback riding. A Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association competitor, she has also battled in track, tennis and basketball events.

Elysia plans to board a plane later this summer for another opportunity to treat tennis spectators and represent the U.S. on foreign soil, this time in the Czech Republic.

She finished an impressive fifth against mostly older singles foes at the Midwest Closed Championships (16-and-under) in Indianapolis in June. Seeded No. 14, Bolton eliminated second-seeded Marybeth Hurley 6-2, 6-2 in a back-draw match and then defeated fourth-seeded Alexandra Pollack 6-2, 7-5 in the match for fifth place.

“Playing junior tennis tournaments is about getting better,” says Bolton, whose dream for years has been to play professional tennis. “I want to get bigger and stronger [in the next 12 months]. I’m happy with my shots, but I want to be able to hit them better against harder hitters.

“I’m training a lot with hard hitters.”

She has been a hit with Bey’s Championship Training Program at the Glenview Tennis Club, recently earning Player of the Year honors for a combination of her work ethic and success at sanctioned tournaments. Bolton also trains regularly with a Chicago District Tennis Association (CDTA) Super Excellence Group.

“She has a lot of them,” Bey says of Bolton’s court weapons. “She hits her forehand up the line really well, and she has a great [two-fisted] backhand. Elysia is good at the net, too. Her serve … she gets plenty of free points off it.”

Bolton started online schooling as an eighth-grader.

Science and math courses interest her more than the other offerings do.

“But I like being challenged,” says Bolton, who has also completed Spanish, English, World History and Health classes.

A similar fearlessness emboldened a racket-in-hand Bolton after she watched former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova pound winners in pro tournaments. The play of Aussie Sam Stosur, a U.S. Open women’s singles champion, also motivated Bolton.

“I now like Victoria Azarenka,” Bolton says of another former world No. 1 singles player. “I like her all-court game; she uses every part of her game well. She also seems really nice.”

Also nice: Darren Bolton’s perspective. Elysia’s father is thrilled when he gets to watch his daughter drill unreachable shots to the corners. But it’s what Elysia does between points that makes him beam wider.

“How she conducts herself on the court is what I like to see,” Darren says. “She does that well. Wins and losses mean little to me. She has fun when she plays, and she enjoys the sport — that’s all I care about.”

The time on the court required to reach elite status in the sport sometimes drives netters off the court for good.

Bolton is unbowed, driven to succeed.

“A willingness to work hard, she has that,” Bey says.

“She can handle the tough days, put up with the repetitive grind necessary to get better. Elysia has the discipline and the courage.”

And a thing for snow skiing. Bolton has thoroughly enjoyed hitting the slopes in Colorado and Australia, surviving “one bad tumble.” But don’t look for her to supplant smashing overheads with schussing downhill.

Skiing is like trick-or-treating for Bolton: a welcome diversion, while wearing a suit.

“I love the freedom of skiing,” Bolton says. “Except when it’s freezing cold.” ■

“It can get pretty chaotic in the spring, trying to figure out where to go and when to be there,” says Linda, the rising seniors’ stepmom since they were 3 years old. “But that bulletin board certainly helps, with all 10 pages of schedules stuck to it.

“It’s challenging, keeping track of their games,” she adds.

Their father, Jeff, sometimes decides which sporting event to attend after considering a number of factors.

“Geography is one of them,” he says. “I like home games.

Weather is another factor at times. Since it doesn’t start getting warm around here until June 1, I like going to Brian’s [indoor] volleyball matches.”

The triplets’ mother, Holly, also lives in Glencoe — about a distance of 17 football fields (just under a mile) from Jeff and Linda. Holly gives Linda a call, asking for options after Linda reads them to her from the mud room.

“Before [the triplets] could drive, it was totally overwhelming, making sure they got to practices and games on time,” Holly recalls. “Now it’s overwhelming because of the decisions we have to make as parents [on busy Game Days].

“But if one of the boys says his game is a very important game, I’ll go to it. Or maybe I’ll go to one half of one game and the second half of another.”

Life for the three parents of the triplets was more manageable during the boys’ middle school years. All three, after all, competed in the three major sports — football, basketball and baseball — at the same school (Central Middle School in Glencoe). But Jeff, Linda and Holly have become adept at adapting on the fly since Scott, David and Brian settled on different sports after entering New Trier.

“Our parents have done a great job of handling all of the time commitments,” says the 6-foot-2, 180-pound David, who helped the Trevians win a state lacrosse championship in May after playing as a combo guard (10 ppg, 47 percent shooter from three-point range) for a Class 4A regional

championship basketball team in the winter. “They do their best to make it to all the games and support all of us, but sometimes it isn’t possible for them to make it.”

None of the Hammes family members will forget the last weekend of May anytime soon. The 5-10, 150-pound Brian played libero in New Trier’s state quarterfinal volleyball loss at Hoffman Estates High School on May 30; the 5-11, 180-pound Scott (.303 batting average) patrolled the outfield for host NT in a Class 4A regional title baseball win over Niles West on May 31; and David and his lax teammates topped Loyola Academy’s Ramblers for the state championship at Hinsdale Central on May 31.

“I rarely see my brothers in the spring; we’re so busy doing our separate sports,” says Brian, who claims he’s the loudest of the triplets, Scott is the quietest and David is a mixture of Brian and Scott, who plays football in the fall as a slot receiver (32 catches, 288 yards and three TDs for a playoff team in ’13). “When we do get together, we talk about our teams, our wins, our teams’ rankings.

“Our household … it has never NOT been competitive, and I could not be more thankful for that because so much of our success in sports comes from the ways we pushed each other when we were younger.”

And they’ve done so while living under a pair of roofs for 14 years. All three spend about half of each year at their mom’s home and the other half at Jeff and Linda’s home.

“Their stepmom is amazing,” says Holly, whose oldest son, Mitchell, is a rising senior and business major at Indiana University. “She totally loves my kids, and so does her family. I could not have asked for more from a stepmom.

“The triplets, living at both homes — it has worked out fabulously.”

Each Hammes triplet has also made quite an impression off the fields and courts, giving their parents plenty of other reasons to swell with pride.

“It’s been great, hearing how highly other athletes’ parents and teachers think of them,” says Jeff Hammes, who battled as a point guard for two years while attending a high school in the Milwaukee area. “When it goes beyond athletics, when I hear they’re nice kids, thoughtful and considerate kids … it always makes me feel lucky they’ve turned out the way they have.

“What also has been gratifying, as well as interesting,” he adds, “is how all three have become independent and established identities in their sports. Fun times, fun times.” >> TO 33

“I’m already crying, thinking about that, though they’re like adults now,” she says. “And I’m going to do everything I can to make sure I watch as many of their games as possible in the fall, winter and spring.”

David, for one, has loved growing up in a sportscrazy household since the day he realized he could

put his good eye-hand coordination to good use. It means never having to call a friend to hone a skill, to talk sports.

“To this day,” David says, “there’s always someone around to play catch with me in the backyard or to shoot hoops with me in the driveway.

“It’s definitely been a wild experience, the three of us playing so many different sports at the same high school, but I don’t even think we’ll realize the craziness of it until we look back at our high school experiences 10 years from now.”

None have decided on a college yet.

“If all three end up picking the same college, that would be the happiest day of my life,” Linda says. ■

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean FOOTNOTES CLUB SOCCER FC United Select: Things started out fabulously for this U-16 girls squad at the US Youth Soccer 2014 National Championships in Germantown, Md. (July 22-27).

Highlighted by Loyola Academy’s Devin Burns (2 goals), New Trier’s Kelly Maday (2 goals) and Lake Forest’s Adrian Walker (1 goal), FC United opened Group A play with a rousing 5-0 victory over Carlsbad Elite (California). The team, which is coached by Loyola’s Craig Snower, followed that up with a 0-0 tie against the MRM Coyotes (Maryland) and a 2-0 victory over Tennessee SC on goals by Maday and Glenbrook South’s Olivia Peters to finish with seven points and a berth to the semifinals.

Its bid for a national title ended, however, with a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay United. Lake Forest’s Sheridan Bufe scored FC United’s lone goal.

Tampa Bay wound up losing 1-0 to California’s Beach FC 97 Academy in the championship.

Eclipse Select: Marvelous Marwede.

For the second year in a row, the Lake Forest resident was spotlighted for her defensive play in the Elite Clubs National League’s national tournament.

TopDrawerSoccer.com placed Marwede, who has made a verbal commitment to the Miami Hurricanes, on its Best XI list after the Eclipse Select U-16 defended its ECNL national title in Richmond, Va., on July 17. She also earned that honor in 2013.

Marwede was joined on the list by three of her fellow teammates: goalkeeper Stephanie Rodriquez and midfielders Marissa Bosco and Alia Martin.

Meanwhile, Eclipse U-16 also competed in the US Youth Soccer 2014 National Championships in Germantown, Md. Playing in the Group B bracket, Eclipse went 1-1-1 (4 points) and just missed advancing to the playoff round.

The Eclipse roster included Marwede and Lake Forest’s Lea Waddle.

Chicago Magic Preacademy: This U-16 boys squad, based out of Highland Park, finished Group A play with a 1-1-1 record at the 2014 National Championships in Maryland. It’s lone win came on July 24 against Florida’s Sunrise Elite 3-2.

In other action, the Magic fell 4-2 to Santa Barbara SC White, while it tied New York’s Dix Hills Elite 1-1. Spencer Farina (New Trier) had one of the goals in the loss to Santa Barbara.

Baltimore Celtic defeated OP Eagles Green (Ohio) 2-1 on penalty kicks in the title match HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER New Trier: Two of the top players on the Trevians’ Class 3A state championship team have made college commitments.

Senior Bina Saipi will take her game to DePaul University.

Junior Kelly Maday announced earlier this summer that she will play for the University of Illinois.

CIRCLING THE BASES BASEBALL Midwest Classic: Lake Forest’s George Karkazis, Glenbrook South’s Ben Samborn and four Glenbrook North players — Sage Bruhl, David Burnside, Brice Call and Matt Tedeschi — were selected to play for Team Illinois Orange in the 12-team Midwest Classic Baseball Tournament at Plainfield South High School (July 29-Aug. 3).

Future Games: Cal Coughlin and Ben Brecht will be two of the headliners playing for Team Illinois in the 4th annual Prep Baseball Report Future Games, which will be held in Westfield, Ind. (July 31-Aug. 2).

Coughlin, a Lake Forest resident, is a pitcher/ third baseman, who is ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2016 by the Prep Baseball Report.

PBR also is very high on New Trier’s Brecht. The 6-foot-6 left-hander is ranked No. 7 in the state’s junior class.

Team Illinois went 0-3 in last summer’s event.

The other states represented in this year’s

tournament include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

CHIP SHOTS GOLF Chick Evans Junior Am: Matt Murlick didn’t tear it up during stroke play at the 34th Chick Evans Junior Amateur at Itasca Country Club on July 21-25. He shot a 149 in the two rounds to finish in a tie for 11th place to qualify for match play.

As it turned out, match play was a different story for Murlick, who will be a junior at New Trier High School. He caught fire and won all five of his matches, beating Wataga’s Hunter Nesselrod in the championship (3 and 2).

Jacob Krugman of Riverwoods also played extremely well in match play. He lost to Murlick (4 and 3) in the semifinals.

After finishing in a four-way tie for second in stroke play (146), Andrew Huber of Winnetka and Nicholas Rossini of Kenilworth had high hopes heading into match play. But both were eliminated in the round of 16. Huber lost to Cary’s Daniel DePrey (3 and 2). Rossini was ousted by Murlick (4 and 3).

Winnetka’s Connor Prassas (147, tied for 6th) and Glenview’s Charlie Nikitas (149, tied for 11th) also advanced to match play. Both lost first-round matches.

In the girls bracket, Wilmette’s Louise McCulloch earned runner-up honors. She was defeated by Lemont’s Lauren Beaudreau (2 and 1) in the championship match.

McCulloch (Class of 2016) carded a two-round 153 to place fourth in stroke play.

Glencoe’s Margaret Hickey (2017) also advanced to match play after shooting a 156 (tied for 7th) in stroke play.

This trio qualified to the U.S. Amateur Championship after finishing 1-2-3 on July 21 at Lake Forest’s Onwentsia Club.

Northbrook’s Hardy shot a 135, which was two strokes better than Wilmette’s Waddell, a Lake Forest Academy grad who played collegiately at Bucknell. Lincolnshire’s Watson qualified with a 140.

The U.S. Amateur will be held at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga., on Aug. 11-17.

Kenosha Classic: Kenilworth’s Blake Yaccino put together an outstanding second round (75) to earn medalist honors in this Mid-American Junior Golf Tour event at the Kenosha Country Club on July 24-25. The Loyola Academy junior shot a 158 to finish three strokes in front of Taylor Hakala.

The Lake Forest tandem of Cindy Wang (Class of 2016) and Emily Young (2016) shot 164 and 167 respectively to end up in third and fourth place.

Others who finished in the top 20 included Glencoe 14-year-old Rachel Rhee (182, tied for 11th), Lake Bluff 15-year-old Megan Sturonas (182, tied for 11th), Highland Park 15-year-old Nicole Berardi (183, tied for 14th) and Winnetka’s Taylor Getzkow (20th, 188).

Yaccino has put together a strong summer against MAJGT competition: tied for 2nd at the Sanctuary Classic (July 17-18), tied for 4th at the Blackstone Classic (June 12-13) and 11th at the Championship of Geneva National (June 17-19).

Wang also has been productive: 1st at the Blackstone Classic, 2nd at Second City Classic (June 9-10), tied for 4th at the Deerfield Open (April 19-20) and Championship of Geneva National, and 6th at the Championship of Purdue (July 8-10).

Young placed 6th in the Sanctuary Classic, while she finished in the 10th-place tie at the Classic at Notre Dame (June 23-24).

In boys action, Lake Forest senior Jack Garrity finished in a tie for 11th at Kenosha (79-79—158) while Winnetka 14-year-old Chip Savarie placed in a tie for 14th (80-79—159). Kevin Paek of Glenview finished in a tie for 16th (160). ■.

38 | SUNDAY BREAKFAST COMMITMENTS GALORE KEEP SEARLE ENGAGED ■ by sam eichner Nancy Searle sits at a table tucked into the back right corner of the Original Green Bay Café in Winnetka, wearing a modest red sweater. She is bookish and amicable, and when she speaks her eyes squint and crinkle around the edges, lending the impression that she’s somehow trying to see you more clearly.

Framed by the restaurant’s juvenilia —construction paper cut-outs in plain yellows, reds and blues, all those delightfully uncomplicated colors of childhood — she fits the traditional mold of a librarian, which she was before she became so much more.

“For a long time, I worked on adult literacy,” she says. “If asked what I wanted most in the world, I knew I should say world peace. But what I really wanted was for everyone to read. And to experience the joy of reading like I do.”

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and her masters in library science from Rosary College in

the Dominican, Searle began her career as a medical librarian at G.D. Searle & Company (her grandfather-in-law is John G. Searle, whom she affectionately refers to as “Grandfather Searle”). Since then, she’s helped to develop the Chicago Biomedical Consortium; served as the Lead Searle Consultant to the Searle Funds at the Chicago Community Trust and as finance chair for the Civic Consulting Alliance; started a fund for charter school start-ups, which now comprises 60 schools in the inner city; and, most recently, co-chaired a fundraiser for Cures Within Reach, a research non-profit that repurposes drugs for new applications. One could potentially decrease the amount of radiation necessary for cancer patients by half.

“I enjoy all the work I do,” says Searle, while eating a Winnetka Special omelette with no tomatoes along with a cup of coffee. “I love the challenge. I enjoy getting up every morning and knowing I have something to do that is going to make a difference in someone’s life one way or another.”

Searle also makes time to serve on the Women’s Board of the Lyric Opera and as a trustee of the John G. Shedd Aquarium. In addition, she’s a scuba diver (her deepest dive was 120 feet), a champion triathlete (albeit with rheumatoid arthritis), a skier (she has a home in Utah), and a mother (on the brink of her son’s wedding in California). With an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Searle admires an entrepreneurial spirit; she regales me with an anecdote from a recent trip to Normandy, where she met a veteran who had almost single-handedly developed a landing craft for the Navy, despite having been dealt several harsh rejections.

“He kept on going,” Searle recalls. “I think that’s a really good lesson.”

And it’s one she has taken to heart.

Because though Searle mentions off-hand that she is retired, she also acknowledges that she can never see herself just staying home.

“I think when you’re an engaged citizen, you don’t stop,” Searle says. “You’re always involved in some way. I guess at the end of the day, I’d like people to say I really contributed until my time was up.” ■
