Center’s rebound from the brink is some kind of wonderful

T

hough I edit just about every story each week in this newspaper, that doesn’t mean I always have a personal relationship with all topics featured. For instance, not only have I never met the majority of chefs interviewed for A Matter Of Taste, the chances are high I’ve never stepped foot in their restaurants. I bring this up because, this week, there’s a piece inside where I feel compelled to share my history with the organization profiled because I think the background will shed light on how far it has come. Back in 2007, I joined the board of Gorton Community Center (my wife Tricia works there today). Often the volunteer board members presented sound ideas — and just as often they were forgotten, likely because no money existed to pursue them. Some concepts were pretty simple — “Let’s prettify the entrance; let’s serve coffee in the Green Room” — but fell to the wayside once a meeting was adjourned. Gorton plodded along without incident, serving the community, improving in some areas but falling behind in others. Soon after I departed the board and to the surprise of just about everyone, Gorton faced collapse. A once-dependable benefit, which was a key annual revenue source, drew hardly anyone during tough

No cold shoulder January and upcoming months look promising for home sellers and buyers ■ by joanna brown There are many reasons sellers pull their homes off the market around this time of year. One reason is the holidays. After all, who wants a potential buyer walking around a Christmas tree? According to Jean Anderson, a veteran agent with Prudential Rubloff’s Lake Forest office, another issue for sellers is to avoid the toll snow-covered boots and winter weather in general take on a home and its flooring. At the same time, that means there’s much less competition for sellers — at a time of year when buyers are serious about purchasing. “A lot of people do take their homes off the market at the end of the year, but we recommended this year not to because we had a lot of serious lookers who have been searching for a long time and were trying to take advantage of the low rates,” said Thad Wong, the Chicago-based cofounder of @Properties. “I wrote a lot of contracts between Christmas and New Year’s Day.” A record of single-family home sales on the North Shore in the last five years, using data provided by the Multiple Listing Service, reported 263 sales in January 2013, compared to a yearly high of 520 sales in May 2013. Sales were lowest in January and December each of the last five years, and highest in April and May. Yet Wong said it is a great time to be a buyer as the new year gets started. “Interest rates will be held low in 2014,” he noted. “Buyers from the city seem to want new construction, which means that some of the resale homes right now are great values.” For those focused on selling their home later in the winter

or in the high season of the spring, along with those hoping to buy at either time, a number of realtors offered suggestions. Buyers, the agents agreed, need to get their finances and their priorities in order. Avoid major purchases that will change your credit score, and work with a lender to be preapproved for a mortgage. “Determine your ideal community, home style, square footage, acreage, room count and location; have your priorities set for selecting your ideal home,” said Lake Forest realtor Ann Lyon of Coldwell Banker. “Work with your agent to see everything on the market that meets your criteria and inquire about exempt listings that you can not find online.” Anderson reminded buyers that not all wishes come true. “If you have a wish list but it isn’t going to happen, you have to trust your agent to show you what fits your criteria.” On the sellers’ side, home improvements come first. “Prepare your home so that it shows at its best,” Lyon said. Anderson advised sellers to listen to their realtor’s advice regarding updates and repairs that make homes most desirable. “If the agent recommends replacing the carpet, it’s to help the seller better prepare for the market,” Anderson said. Finding an agent you can trust is crucial, she explained, and you’ll know early on if the pairing of client with realtor is a good one. Finding this person isn’t as difficult as it sounds, Wong assured. Ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues, and note the listing agents when you search online for homes you’re interested in touring. If all else fails, call a real estate office and ask the managing broker to recommend an agent who matches your interests – not just the

agent on the floor when you call, Wong said. Once you meet the agent, ask about the agent's number of sales, the average list time and the ratio of list price to sale price. “Make sure they are networking with agents from various offices to communicate that your property is available, that they have sold a lot of properties in the market that you’re in, and that they are knowledgeable about the community – whether they live or work there – so that they can discuss their experiences with potential buyers,” Wong said. Inquire also about the customer service you should expect, he added. “People want to get what they pay for, and in our communities you pay significantly for a good brokerage with both time and money. In the last three years the bar has been raised on the North Shore, and expectations of sellers have never been higher.” Wong explained that most sellers demand that the listing agent attend all showings; leaving a lock box on the door so that the buyer’s agent can lead a tour is an outdated practice. “In-person showings mean that your home will be represented well and you’ll get feedback from potential buyers,” he said. It also allows the listing agent to explain away any concerns a potential buyer has. “It’s very reasonable to expect communication with your agent weekly,” Anderson said. “Your agent should have information about the potential buyers who are coming to your home as well as information about other properties like yours that are selling in your area if yours is not, and the agent should be spending money to market your home with a professional photographer and color brochure.” ■

Cooperstown beckons, thanks to baseball benefit

■ by angelika labno

With the Hall of Fame induction of Chicago White Sox legend Frank Thomas and Chicago Cub Cy Young winner Greg Maddux, the annual trip to Cooperstown, N.Y., will be exceptionally special for the boys of the Lake Forest Baseball Association, a non-profit offering competitive travel baseball for 8-12 year olds. Otherwise known as the pinnacle of the LFBA program, the summer trip to Cooperstown includes a tour of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and playing on the Field of Dreams. The expenses are made affordable through LFBA’s annual fundraiser. On Saturday, Jan. 25, LFBA Night will be held at The Lake Forest Club. The night will include casino-style gambling, food stations, imported beer and wine, silent and live auctions and a raffle. The proceeds offset the cost of baseball enrollment and attracting good coaching talent in addition to the lowering the cost of the Cooperstown trip. This year’s chair, Lauren Turelli, transformed the night into the first-ever LFBA Week. “We want to expand our presence in the community and try to do something for others as well as our boys that’s beyond the field,” said Turelli, who also helped organize last year’s community service project, where the boys collected and donated gently used sports equipment to families devastated by the tornado in Washington, Ill. LFBA Week kicks off on Jan. 20 with a Baseball Clinic at Slammers Training

Academy in Lake Forest that will be open to the community. The session includes competitions in hitting, batting, baserunning, fielding and throwing/pitching, and prizes will be awarded to category winners. The cost is $20 per player, and two sessions will be divided by age (8-10 year olds and 11-14 year olds). Also new this year is a partnership with Linking Efforts Against Drugs (LEAD), an anti-drug group in Lake Forest, to present former Major League Baseball player Gary Bennett at Lake Forest’s CROYA. The former Cardinals catcher and 13-year veteran — who earned more than $5 million in his career and captured a World Series ring in 2006 — was booted from the game for his use of enhancement drugs, but unlike the many that are caught, he owned up to his mistakes. He will be giving the boys pointers on how to deal with the pressures of athletics. The date will be announced on the website www.lfba.net. LEAD and LFBA hope to continue their efforts with a program for kids ages 8-12 later in the year. “It’s such a powerful way to instill good decision making and get the kids thinking on the right track,” added Turelli, who has three sons in the organization. LFBA is different from other community travel teams in that it hands over the game’s authority to paid coaches; that means keeping parents out of the dugouts, coaching and baseball decisions as much as possible, says LFBA Commissioner Martin Sweet. Frank Barry, former college baseball player at Bowling Green State University, was hired

photography by joel lerner as the director of baseball to hire, train and oversee coaches as well as handle tournaments and uniforms. “Sometimes parents can be reliving their youth through their kid, but we get the focus back on the kid,” said Sweet, who anticipates an enrollment of 132 kids and three 12-year-old travel teams this spring. “We’re

excited about the level of interest, talent and development they’re getting.” Turelli shared what involvement in LFBA has meant to her family. She said, “LFBA has made for a lot of lifetime memories, friendships and experiences that are irreplaceable and not always possible in other sports or hobbies.” ■

NEWS DIGEST REVIEW Glencoe

Lake Forest In honor of its 125th anniversary, Lake Forest Country Day School announced the creation of the Lake Forest Country Day School Merit Scholar Program. Two full-tuition scholarships will be awarded to incoming fifth-grade students in the 2014-2015 school year. These scholarships are renewable annually through the student’s eighth-grade year. The program recognizes students who demonstrate strong academic ability, involvement in extracurricular activities, and whose

PREVIEW Evanston This fall, Northwestern University will launch a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program in Documentary Media. With an emphasis on the crosspollination of documentary and narrative, the new program will build on Northwestern’s faculty strengths in filmmaking, media and production. It will accept up to 12 students each academic year. Applications are due Feb. 15. Says Debra Tolchinsky, who will direct the new MFA program, “Documentary was once considered secondary to narrative media. Today it’s a vital part of entertainment, promotion and advocacy.”

For the first time in its 41-year history, the Chicago Botanic Garden attracted more than one million visitors in a calendar year. The 2013 milestone represents a 5 percent increase over 2012, the second-highest attendance year on record. “Our steadily increasing attendance tells us that public gardens are becoming increasingly relevant to people’s lives,” said Sophia Shaw Siskel, president and CEO. This year, the Garden will renovate the Garden Café and offer new programming for the dead of winter. In February, the Garden will premiere the Orchid Show, its first month-long exhibition of orchids.

families share in the Lake Forest Country Day School value of partnership among students, faculty, and parents. Says LFCDS Head of School Bob Whelan. “LFCDS offered merit scholarships through the 1970s and 1980s, and we’re enthusiastic about revitalizing the program.”

The Power of One takes many forms: a woman breaks through racial barriers by refusing to give up her seat on a bus; a survivor of genocide tells his story and empowers others to accept their neighbors; a child on a playground stands up to a bully. Katherine Chon was the 2013 Power of One Award recipient. As co-founder of

Polaris Project, a leading organization in the global fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery, Chon exemplifies the power of one person to make a difference in the lives of others. Sounds of music permeate Prindle household ■ by angelika labno

Danielle, Alex, Juliette and Gabrielle Prindle offer lessons at the Prindle Music School.

photography by joel lerner

Talk about a family business. The Prindle kids, ranging from age 10 to 16, have pooled together their musical talents to form an unconventional music lesson formula — kids teaching kids. “I wanted them to have a work ethic, and having their own pocket money has given them responsibility,” said mom Camille. “They’ve learned a lot about running a business at a young age.” The Lake Forest clan consists of Alex, a junior and Gabrielle, a freshman, at Lake Forest High School, and Deer Path’s Juliette, a seventh grader and Danielle, fifth grade. Their training comes from Ron Surace at the Music Institute of Chicago, where they continue to learn, and to back up their credentials, they each hold musical awards from the NSMTA Sonata/Sonatina competitions. Clearly passionate about music, it seemed like a natural progression to go into teaching. “I just love music so much, and I want to share it with the world,” said Alex, the first to teach lessons in 2009. Danielle followed up saying, “You want everyone to have the fun experience that you have playing.” The Prindle Music School business has since grown to 33 students, a mix of kids and adults, and between the four of them, they teach piano, drums, guitar, voice, trumpet and violin. Their home is equipped with two pianos on separate levels, and other rooms are used as needed so that four students can practice at the same time. Lessons are spread out on the weekends so as to not interfere with school or tennis at the Lake Bluff Racquet Club. Individual biographies and information on getting started can be found at www.prindlemusicschool.com. The kids have seen the various advantages to their system of lessons. Convenient for parents are the laidback rules: the teachers are understanding about cancellations and won’t charge for a missed lesson, as some

places do. The price is also reasonable at $10 for a halfhour lesson. Students benefit by forming a connection with a teacher close in age. They get a mentor who knows what they are going through and can relate more easily to learning hurdles. As some parents know, it can be impossible to get an uninterested kid practicing at home. The Prindles have an advantage in motivating the bored or encouraging the shy. “One of the hardest things about teaching is when the kids are shy, they won’t tell you that they’re confused about something. If it’s kids with kids, they open up a lot more,” said Gabrielle. Teaching in turn helps the Prindles become better musicians, as they must be masters of a piece before they can teach it. “It helps you with your own pieces, because we get so much practice with sight reading,” added Juliette. The first teacher may not always a good fit, the Prindles have learned, but with three others readily available, one can shift around until a match is found. The teachers all have different personalities and work ethics, but there is a commonality in their teaching method. As Alex explains, they mix the Suzuki method with the traditional method. There is an emphasis on memorization because the students must prepare for concerts held at the Prindle home three times a year. The concerts not only boost a student’s performance skills and confidence, but allow the Prindle community to see just how much progress they have made. “There’s a student I started just two years ago as a total beginner, and now he’s my most advanced student,” Alex said beamingly. “It’s fantastic to see them grow as students and as people.” “One of the most rewarding things for me is seeing the kids work so hard and get ready for the concert,” said Gabrielle. “It’s that feeling of pride that you taught someone how to do something and then the pride they have in themselves.” ■

Social Media

She espouses a high-tech concept ■ by katie rose mceneely

Lori Tisinai

photography by joel lerner

Lori Tisinai is the president of Computer Concepts in Lake Bluff. She lives in Lake Bluff. Reading: “Crain’s Chicago Business” and “PC Today.” I bought a bunch of books at the Friends of the Lake Forest Library Book Sale, so I have a stack waiting for me. A lot of them are mysteries. Listening: NPR. I like “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!” I’d want to be on the show, only if I was able to read the news. We went to watch the show last year, and Drew Carey was a guest star — that was a lot of fun. Watching: I watch a lot of TV. I like “Scandal” and “Dancing With the Stars.” A lot of times I’ll have the TV on just to listen as I’m cooking or cleaning. Following: I really try to follow the current trends in my industry — what new software or piece of technology is coming out, and how it can be useful to my clients. Right now, the technology industry is changing so quickly, you need to study up on how all the technology works together and how everything integrates. Activity: Our company has two sides to the business: one side is corporate computer training, where we teach corporations such as Abbott and the University of Chicago how to use Microsoft Office. And we have another side of the business where we help people around the North Shore integrate and use technology —iPads, fixing a virus, setting up parental controls in the home, that’s what we do. We’re a full-service training and IT support company. I am working with being a mentor to two Lake Forest College interns, where I went to school, and we’re working on marketing plans for next year. My least favorite thing is going through my emails, trying to maintain my inbox! It’s a never-ending battle. I’m not on the board anymore, but I curl, as an activity — what’s exciting about that sport is that

a girl from our club [Exmoor] is going on to the Olympics! She just won the Olympic trials and she’s very interesting. In the summer, I do a lot of boating and try to help some charities with their social media, helping them create buzz around their events. One big thing that we are doing is collecting computers, iPads and iPod touches that are no longer being used, rebuilding, fixing and then donating to underprivileged children and families. Last year we donated a computer lab to The Haven and this year we worked with Lydia Homes and Safe Families by providing computers to those in need.

“We help people around the North Shore integrate and use technology — iPads, fixing a virus, setting up parental controls in the home.” | Lori Tisinai Eating: I’m trying to eat healthy! I always like good food, and I’m trying to eat more nutritious food — a lot of vegetables and fruits, and I’ve been making a lot of smoothies. What is your favorite mistake? My favorite mistake is a mistake that I can learn from for the future — I call them “lessons learned.” I think every day you have a lesson learned, so I just think it’s ongoing — maybe not a mistake, but you didn’t like an outcome and would like to make sure it doesn’t happen in the future. So it’s more, what was the outcome, and what was the lesson you learned from it that day. I always have a lesson learned. For more information, visit computerconceptsUSA. com. ■

LIFESTYLE & ARTS | 19 Instructor takes swing at golf book ■ by david sweet More than a foot of snow and 10-degree temperatures greet golfers taking lessons at The Glen Club on a recent January day. The range and the course are as far from playable as one can imagine — which is why shivering players head indoors to see Joe Bosco. He stands behind a laptop, offering advice as they knock balls into a nine-foot-high screen filled with data at the bottom. “Let’s see if we can get this one to the left of the target line,” Bosco tells T.J. Swan, a high school golfer. A few swings later — as a white video trajectory tracks where the ball would have gone on a golf course — Bosco likes what he sees. “I want to bottle this … a perfect baby draw,” he says. An instructor for more than a quarter century who has also coached North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka to two state titles, Bosco is trying to now make his mark on golfers across the counJoe Bosco try. “Real Golf: Taking Your Best Game to the Course” is his recently published first book, written with Golf Digest Senior Writer Matthew Rudy. With a surfeit of how-to-make-your-game-better golf tomes on the market, why did Bosco decide to take a swing at his own? It started when he was nominated as a Golf Magazine Top 100 instructor a few years back. “The application asked, ‘Now that you’re nominated, why should you be chosen?’ I did a lot of soul-searching,” Bosco explains. “I had to come up with what I stood for. Why do I get uncommon results in comparison to other teachers?”

“After just nine holes keeping your three-ball ringer score, you get an immediate sense of your potential — with the skill set and swing you already have.” | Joe Bosco Once he figured out what set him apart and thought he should write a book about it, he talked with Golf Digest’s Rudy, who has collaborated on a number of golf books with Dave Stockton and others. Bosco said Rudy thought the golf instructor could own the particular space he was proposing. One of the major points Bosco makes is to shun the driving range and play the course. He adopted the idea of Rudy Duran — Tigers Woods’ first instructor — that one should play a three-ball nine-hole scramble, which “legislates mulligans” and gives hope to the golfer. “You’re examining what you do in game situat io n s , r e c o r d i n g t he r e s u lt s a nd

using that feedback to guide your improvement,” Bosco writes. “After just nine holes keeping your three-ball ringer score, you get an immediate sense of your potential — with the skill set and swing you already have.” Though focusing on the mental game is not a unique golf strategy, Bosco goes a step further than most in the book and during his lessons. “I’ve asked golfers to play their course mentally and try to make more birdies than they’ve really made there,” Bosco says. “Every exper ience you ever have in your life is

illustration by barry blitt mental, but most of our imaginative skills are not cultivated. My training isn’t always with a golf club in hand.” Though Bosco and Rudy spoke with publishers, they ended up self-publishing “Real Golf,” which sells for $14.99 and is targeted at non-beginners. Bosco pointed out that way they can retain 100 percent of the rights and have flexibility for when they’d like to create a second edition or to tailor the book to special events at clubs or at charities. Bosco – who co-founded GreentoTee Golf Academy and who now runs Joe Bosco Golf (www. joeboscogolf.com) — believes he has an advantage over club pros when it comes to teaching. “My goal is not to make you happy during a lesson,” he says. I don’t have to walk on eggshells that you’ll fire me.” The new author spent most of his childhood in Winnetka. One summer day a cousin, Paul Jiganti, asked him to play golf. “I said, ‘That’s a sissy game,’ “ Bosco recalled. “I borrowed some clubs. I hit a 7-iron 80 yards on a par-three course and tapped in for a birdie — I was hooked.” Only 7 years old at the time, Bosco shagged balls that same summer at Winnetka Golf Club. He ended up working there through New Trier High School, where one year he captained the golf squad, and until he graduated from the University of Illinois with degrees in communications and history. Despite a lifetime dedicated to golf, ironically enough, Bosco doesn’t get to play that much — even at the Tom Fazio-designed Glen Club in Glenview he teaches at. “There’s probably no golf instructor who’s played less than I have,” Bosco says. “I’ve not yet had a hole in one. If there were more days in the week, I’d love to play golf more. But by nature I’m a teacher.” ■

Spouse can be blamed for weight gain — or help control it ■ by joanna brown

Re-purposing unused areas of a home into functional rooms provides the homeowner many benefits. The immediate benefit of converted rooms is that they provide enjoyment, relaxation and purpose in what was previously wasted space. Long-term, room conversions add value to a home by providing prospective buyers with the maximum efficiency of a home’s floor plan and square footage, as well as the uniqueness of the converted room. Efficiency kitchens, libraries, observatories, home theatres, greenhouses, wine rooms, spa-sauna combos or secondary suites are all distinctive choices for a room conversion that make a home stand apart from others, while simultaneously benefiting the homeowner by providing convenience and a sense of luxury without the hefty price tag. Before beginning any room conversion, however, there are necessary considerations to make before deciding what licensed contractors will be required in order to ensure the new room’s comfort, safety and long-term maintenance. The first consideration is, what room are you converting, and what will this room need? For example, venting an insulated attic room properly is crucial for comfort, safety and household maintenance. Improperly ventilated, an attic conversion will not simply be uncomfortably hot, but it will also be damaging to the overall structure. Likewise, basement and garage conversions must have adequate light and ventilation, as well as be sealed to protect against dampness and moisture. Once you’ve taken the necessities into account, it’s time to start the fun part—building a one-of-a-kind room into your family’s unique house!

If you’re looking at the calendar and feeling badly that your New Year’s resolutions didn’t make it out of January, I have good news for you: a survey suggests that you can, in fact, blame it on your spouse. More than 1,000 people queried in the United Kingdom found that being married affects your weight for the worse. As reported in the Daily Mail, 40 percent of participants gained an average of four pounds per year. Approximately 20 percent reported gaining two pounds per year, while a similar amount reported gaining six pounds annually. And what about the last fifth of the survey participants? They indicated that they had not seen a change in their weight since they walked down the aisle. The reasons for gaining weight varied, but half of study participants confessed to spending more time in front of the television with their spouse, snacking. Northbrook nutritionist Karen Raden isn’t surprised by this study. In her 15 years as a North Shore dietician, she’s found that her clients who have the most success controlling their weight work in tandem with their spouses. “In your spouse you have a built-in support team or sabotage,” she explained. Not that spouses act deliberately to derail their partner’s plans for better health, “but we do a lot of things without thinking.” Rather, Raden offered several ways couples can work together to extend the life of either partner’s New Year’s resolutions. “I find that most people, in general, are not overeating during the day,” she said, “but in the evenings, when families or couples get together after running around during the day, we’re all tired and cold and bored. I find that it’s at about 4 p.m. when

things start to fall apart.” Have a great dinner together, she suggested, and then have ready a list of fun things to do together instead of reaching for the ice cream scoop and the remote. Your goal, physically, should be to go 12 hours between breakfast and dinner so that your body can cycle through its repair mode, Raden said. “Find something else that feels nurturing,” she said. The list of replacement activities might include watching a movie together with two cups of tea, a heated game of Words with Friends, even dancing around the living room to a favorite playlist from Pandora. But everything on the list should be fun and make you feel good; there is no room on this list for cleaning out the garage or other chores that you will avoid doing. “Instead of sharing Boston cream pie, share other pleasurable activities that will help you break your old habits,” Raden said. On the other hand, Raden recommended talking about food all day long. Many people stay so busy during the day that they neglect time for lunch — making them ravenous at dinner time and eager to eat the first thing they can get their hands on at 6 p.m. Instead, Raden and her husband like to meet for lunch when their work schedules permit. Roti for salads topped with chicken is among their favorite inexpensive and mutually convenient spots. “Food is not love,” Raden reminded me. “We want you to feel good every day now, not get to Spring Break and have you feeling like you need to get on a quick diet.” A noble goal, indeed – but it leaves me craving a frozen margarita. Have you worked with your spouse in pursuit of a mutual goal? Tell me about it, at Joanna@northshoreweekend.com ■

I got fired from a position and I thought, I love cooking; can I take my passion and try to make a living at it? And that was 16 years ago. We just hired our 20th employee, and we have a 30,000-square-foot facility. How much do you cook? Not only do I cook a lot at home using our products, but we have a test kitchen here in the plant. We do a lot of recipe development. We look at trends, what’s hot on the food scene, and try to figure out how to fit that into Urban Accents. Everything we do is all natural— everything is just pure spices. That’s rule number one. Rule two is that is has to be convenient for people. While I love to cook, I can’t spend all day on Saturday making tomato sauce. We have convenience cuisine — a dish we can make at home, for four people, in about 30 minutes. We also do more approachable ethnic cuisine — a lot of Latin, a lot of European-style cooking, and a lot of Indian spices adapted to the American palate. Best recipe tweak? We don’t do straight spices — we do spice blends. It’s very adaptable. Our packaging gives two or three recipes on every jar. If people think they can only use a spice blend for one thing, they get tired of it. Signature spice/herb? The one that’s probably the most versatile is a product called “Fisherman’s Wharf” (a blend of salt, black pepper, garlic, white onion, lemon peel, parsley, green peppercorn and green onion).

Favorite cuisine to make? I do a lot of vegetables nowadays. We have a line of products called veggie roasters — I find myself wanting to eat a little bit less meat and more vegetarian, maybe because I’m getting older. It just depends on what I feel like doing. Worthwhile gadget? A wine opener, of course. I don’t know how you’d cook without it. Favorite cookbook? We don’t use other cookbooks in our test kitchen. We wanted to do a mole, but they can take six and seven hours, but we wanted a fabulous mole in 30 minutes. We adapt our recipes to take all the work out if it. It’s part of our line, “Gotta Cook Tonight,” which is a seasoning packet with a recipe to serve 4-6 people. Who has seven hours? Favorite fruit or vegetable? I am a tomato freak, in tomato season. Brussels sprouts more in the fall. Proudest of: The employees who work for me. My customers have turned into friends, and my employees are family. We’ve got a heck of a group. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? I can’t tell you how many disasters have come out of there. Once we were working with natural popcorn seasoning, and we wanted to do a chili line. We had to evacuate the building — once we sprinkled too much chili, and it got in the air. It was a little crazy. One recipe you could teach us? My favorite thing when friends are coming over is the “Gotta Cook Tonight” mole chicken — you can make a big pot and leave it out like a taco bar. It’s certainly a crowd-pleaser. Urban Accents products are available at Sunset Foods and Treasure Island. For more information, visit urbanaccents.com. ■

New sports sedan hits market ■ by angelika labno Ask Lake Forest’s Rick Mancuso about his profession, and he’ll respond with, “I’m in the fashion automotive business.” Indeed, the cars Mancuso deals with at Lake Forest Sportscars are impeccably designed bodies of art.

“When you come to Ferrari and Maserati, you’re finding an enormous fashion sense that’s in every single part of the car.” | Rick Mancuso “We’re bringing a sense of style and glamour to a segment of the market known more for utility than fashion,” said Mancuso. Take, for example, the Ghibli, Maserati’s new mid-size sport sedan. The exterior and leather interior styling are a testament to Italian designing. After all, Mancuso points out, Italy has been making beautiful objects for thousands of years. One can nab a no-frills two-wheel drive Ghibli (which is named after a dust-carrying desert wind in North Africa) for $65,000, or go for a well-equipped version (with an enhanced radio system and tinted windows) for around $80,000. The interior can be enhanced with different finishes (wood or metal), stitching or carpeting.

Adding to its sporty look is a level of practicality: the Ghibli features all-wheel drive, ample trunk space, great gas mileage and “the soul of a Ferrari”— thanks to its Ferrari engine. “It’s particularly well-suited to the North Shore of Chicago because it’s great to drive all year long and is comfortable, fast and highperforming,” added Mancuso. “It’s a really magical combination right now.” Mancuso has been in the auto industry for more than 30 years. His father was in the high-volume car business in the 1950s, but that didn’t interest Mancuso, who was enamored with lower-volume, high-performance cars. Today, Lake Forest Sportscars offers luxury vehicles from Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, McLaren and Lotus, and pre-owned vehicles from others. “Cars are very reflective of the culture from which they originate,” said Mancuso. “I’m not saying one is better than the other; they’re just different. When you come to Ferrari and Maserati, you’re finding an enormous fashion sense that’s in every single part of the car.” The year 2014 will bring a breath of fresh air to the dealership. Mancuso plans to rebrand the business by segregating the individual brands to create separate atmospheres within the location. With it will come a series of sub names; for example: Ferrari of Lake Forest, Maserati of Lake Forest, and so forth. Maserati’s spotlight won’t stop with the Ghibli: it has plans to come out with an SUV in the first quarter of 2015, and Mancuso calls it “spectacular looking.” “One of these days I have to grow up and get a real job,” Mancuso mused. “This can’t be real work — it’s too much fun.” ■

Standing tall

New Trier swimmers finish Evanston invite with a winning pose ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com New Trier’s boys swimming team unintentionally made its retiring coach, Mark Onstott, laugh shortly after last weekend’s Evanston Invite. The victorious Trevians were attempting to pose for pictures on deck, not far from where Onstott was standing. The coach of the reigning state champion appeared to be in disbelief. He then delivered a piece of advice. “Hey, guys, you might want the taller ones to stand behind the smaller ones,” said the coach, smiling. Who stood the tallest at the 18-team meet on Jan. 11? Onstott’s boys. NT amassed 298.5 points to runner-up Glenbrook South’s 252.5 points. “We’re sorting things out, filling holes here and there,” Onstott had said earlier. “There is a lot of competition for jobs. It’s a good bunch of guys. “Some,” he added, “are now getting to spend more time in the limelight, less in the shadows.” Trevians senior and Columbia Universitybound Jae Park basked in the former at the state meet last winter, zipping to four gold medals. Park went 4-for-4 at Evanston last weekend, overwhelming the competition in the 200-yard IM (1:52.53) and 100 breaststroke (57.52). He also swam on a pair of triumphant relays (200 medley, 400 freestyle). “My medley relay teammates … they blew my mind,” Park said, referring to Tommy Jiang, Conor Fotsch, Larry Brooks and the quartet’s time of 1:37.27. “Our entire team trained extremely hard during winter break. Our endurance is outstanding; we’ve been running stairs (from the basement to the fourth floor) at the school. “We have our stuff together.” New Trier’s Murphy McQuet also stood out at the invite, touching first in the 200 free (1:45.05) and 100 butterfly (52:04) events. He also served as the lead-off leg for the winning 400 free relay (3:13.02), anchored by Park. Jiang and Fotsch completed the other legs. Fotsch motored to second in the 100 free (46.89) and third in the 50 free (22.4). New Trier’s Matt Weiser took fifth in the 100 breast (1:03.25) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:02.68). Trevians sophomore Max Robertson finished seventh in the 500 free (4:53.65). “Max has really come on, while figuring out [the 500 free]” said Onstott, in his 20th and final season at NT. “He swam really well before the break.” Trevians senior Reiker Seiffe, meanwhile, edged Christian Life’s Michael Klemm 435.65-432.15 for the title at the NT Dive Classic in Winnetka. NT junior Drew Parkinson placed 17th (250.85). Their combined total of 686.5 points ranked first among teams that competed two divers and fourth behind a trio of schools with three diving entrants. Lake Forest High School Back and forth.

Entry, flee: New Trier High School’s Murphy McQuet gets off to a flying start in the 200 freestyle at the Evanston Invite on Jan. 11. He took first place.

photography by joel lerner To and fro. Rasmus Kull ahead of Cole Mitchell one day, Mitchell in front of Kull the next. The Lake Forest High School senior captains continued their friendly in-house fray in the 100 breaststroke at the Evanston Invite on Jan. 11. “We’re pretty close,” Kull said of the pair’s times in the event. “It’s good competition.” Kull finished seventh (1:03.89) in the Wildkits’ pool, a shade ahead of his mate (8th, 1:03.96). “My goal,” Mitchell said, “is to swim it under a minute.” Same as Kull’s goal. Kull also swam on one of the Scouts’ two sixth-place relays, joining freshman Dylan Boyd and juniors Daniel Smith and Symen Ooms to clock a 1:31.6 in the 200 free. The Scouts’ third captain, senior Michael Van Antwerp, collaborated with Smith, Ooms and junior Michael LeMay for a sixth-place showing in the 400 free relay (3:20.9). “Every new year is a good year,” LF coach Cindy Dell said 10 days after New Year’s Day. “What I like about this group is the way they push each other. They’re all a part of a really nice training environment. “They pull for each other,” she added. “They cheer. Great attitudes.” Lake Forest, third at last year’s state meet, took fourth (195 points) at last weekend’s highly competitive meet, six points

behind the host school. New Trier (298.5) and Glenbrook South (252.5) went 1-2. “We lost a lot of good guys [to graduation],” Kull said, referring to state scorers Peter Grumhaus, Colin Rowe, Andrew Marsh and Bogdan Balteanu. “But we’ve been working hard. During winter break, we became a family, after practicing as long as we did each day.” Ooms provided oomph for the Scouts in the 50 free, topping the field with a 22.25. He also sped to third in the 100 free (48.65). “Symen … he’s good, really good,” Mitchell said. “And [Boyd] has had an incredible impact on the team.” Boyd finished seventh in the 100 butterfly (54.31), ahead of LeMay (eighth, 54.74). Smith pulled to runner-up honors in the 100 backstroke (52.92), nearly 10 months after taking 12th at state in the event in 52.04. Lake Forest’s John-Michael Divens, meanwhile, placed 10th (331.65) at the New Trier Dive Classic, two spots ahead of teammate Alex Streightiff (329.2). The pair’s aggregate scores resulted in a fifthplace finish. Loyola Academy Three years ago, on Loyola’s JV swim team, Michael Zahorik was a lot like the first letter of his surname:

Buried, at the bottom of a group. But Zahorik is racing as a member of the Ramblers’ A-team these days, anchoring a pair of varsity relays and battling as a sprint freestyler. “Every year since his freshman year he took a major step,” Ramblers coach Mike Hengelmann marveled. “He works hard, and he has a great attitude. Michael is a great team guy.” Zahorik anchored the runner-up 200 free relay (1:28.98) at the Evanston Invite on Jan. 11, following legs from senior George Finn, sophomore Christopher Kearney and senior Cameron Shewchuck. He also capped LA’s fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:41.18, with senior Matthew Kearney, Finn and senior Thomas Haracz). Finn sped to second in the 50 free (22.33) and served as the lead-off leg of the fourth-place 400 free relay (3:17.81, with senior Brian Hulseman, Shewchuck and Christopher Kearney). Loyola, sixth at state last winter, finished sixth (167 points) at last weekend’s 18-team invite. LA’s divers, meanwhile, combined plunges worth 1,047.2 points to top the field at the New Trier Dive Classic on Jan. 11. New Trier: Jackie be nimble. Jackie be quick. Jackie be good — very good — in the third quarter of New Trier’s 43-37 defeat of host Glenbrook South on Jan. 10. Jackie Welch, that is. The Trevians’ 5-foot-11 junior guard struck for seven of her 12 points and collected three of her five steals in the third quarter of the Central Suburban League South contest in Glenview. “Her length, her quickness … Jackie [used both] to get some deflections that led to easy baskets in transition,” NT coach Teri Rodgers said. “In a game like this, we needed those.” NT (17-0, 5-0) trailed South (7-12, 3-2) 12-4 after one quarter but led 14-13 at the break. The Trevians scored the first five points of the second half, with Welch netting four of them. Her steal and bucket put the visitors up 19-13. Her trey, at 4:51 of the third frame, gave NT a 22-16 advantage. Welch hit another three-pointer in the fourth quarter. “Our halftime talk pumped everybody up,” Welch said. “We were rushing too often [in the first quarter], and we didn’t pass well. “We had to calm down.” Trevians senior guard Alexa Czyzynski tallied a game-high 14 points, and sophomore teammate Jeanne Boehm finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. NT senior guard Isabella Bosco grabbed six boards and had five steals.

Men’s Soccer Harrison Shipp/Chris Ritter: Shipp, a 2010 Lake Forest High School graduate and University of Notre Dame senior forward, had quite a twoday stretch last week. A day after signing a Chicago Fire professional contract as a homegrown player on Jan. 9, Shipp finished runner-up to Maryland senior forward Patrick Mullins in voting for the Hermann Trophy — soccer’s Heisman Trophy — at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Mullins, a repeat pick, helped Maryland take runner-up honors to ND at the NCAA men’s tournament (College Cup) last month. Shipp delivered the assist on the match-winning goal in the 2-1 decision on Dec. 15. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound Shipp earned 2013 College Cup and ACC offensive player of the year honors after leading the Irish (17-1-6) in goals (12) and assists (11). He majored in finance and graduated last month. Meanwhile, Jan. 13 was a big day for Ritter. The New Trier graduate and two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection for Northwestern also inked a contract with the Fire as a Homegrown Player.

Back in his comfort zone Heady Krug is a difference maker on defense ■ by bob gosman

sports@northshoreweekend.com As a sophomore, Andrew Krug of the Highland Park Giants hockey team had butterflies the weight of hockey pucks in his stomach when coach Sean Freeman was set to announce the varsity team. “I knew I had a chance coming in and I worked as hard as I could in tryouts,” he said. “It was an amazing feeling when I saw my name on the varsity roster.” Highland Park (35-4-4) was loaded with defensemen last year so Freeman moved Krug up to forward from defenseman, his normal position. In addition to filling a need, Freeman believes that deploying a young player at a different position will increase his development and understanding of the game. Sure enough, Krug made a solid contribution at forward and improved as a player. “He’s a very cerebral player,” Freeman said. “He played smart and got better every day.” This season, Krug returned to defense. His contribution may be unsung from a stat standpoint (2 goals, 7 assists), but his teammates and coaches know he is playing an essential role in Highland Park’s success. “He made a (seamless) transition back to defense,” teammate Zak Lieberman said. “He’s one of the smartest guys on the team with the puck. He protects the puck and makes good passes and plays.” Added Freeman: “He has (the potential) to be one of the top defensemen in the league.” And Krug is making his mark despite giving up inches and pounds to most of the players he is defending. He has gained 20 pounds since his sophomore season but is still undersized at 5-foot-8, 135 pounds. “He plays the body and will do whatever it takes,” Lieberman said. And Krug said those extra 20 pounds have made a difference in the way he matches up with people. “I spent a lot of time in the weight room and that’s helped me on the ice,” he said. “I’ve improved my shot, and I’m able to win more battles in the corner and get guys off the puck. I have a (great) line and we try and put the team in good position.” One of the reasons Freeman selected Krug for the varsity as a sophomore was his toughness. He admires Krug’s

During the season, teams play a constant stream of games. The one real break in the season is around the holidays. The Giants did not play a game for three weeks and only had the benefit of just one practice. That helps explain why Highland Park came out so sluggishly against Crystal Lake South on Jan. 11. The Giants spotted Crystal Lake South the first two goals and had to rally furiously for a 3-3 tie.

Time for a renovation? No, not the house.

“It took them a while to get going,” Freeman said. “We put ourselves behind the eight ball, but we fought our way back and really dominated the third period.” With about 90 seconds remaining and trailing 3-2, Freeman pulled his goaltender. Less than 40 seconds later, Matthew Baker found the net off of assists from Garrett Collopy and David Shapiro. “That’s a situation we work on in practice a lot because you never know when you’ll need it to score a goal,” Freeman said. While Freeman understands the layoff contributed to Highland Park’s slow start, he has no interest in that becoming a habit. “We can’t get satisfied or complacent,” he said. Highland Park bounced back with a decisive 5-1 victory over Lake Forest Academy the following day. ■

Inaugural Straus Invite proves to be a feel-good event ■ by bill mclean

See a fluffy monkey head covering her left foot. The Lake Forest High School sophomore slipped into them after a home gymnastics meet on Jan. 11. “A gift from my grandma [Dorothy “Happy” Clements, of Indiana],” said the Scout, looking down at her unique and oh-so-cozy footwear. “I got them when I was 4. “They still fit,” Rossman added. Also fitting, on Jan. 11: the new name of the meet. Formerly known as the Lake Forest Gymnastics Invitational, it was officially renamed the Robin Straus Gymnastics Invitational. Straus retired from coaching last winter, after guiding LFHS gymnasts for 34 years. “This [invite] was always her baby,” said Straus’ successor and former assistant, Alison Gildemeister, who coached girls gymnastics at Vernon Hills HS the past two winters. “Robin deserves the honor, because she put her whole life into coaching the sport here.” For LFHS athletic director Tim Burkhalter, changing the name of the invite made sense. “Real good teams always compete at this meet, and Robin didn’t just have an impact as a coach at our school.” he said. “Her impact in gymnastics was felt across the state of Illinois.” Straus handed out top-10 medals at the end of her meet on Jan. 11. Lake Forest senior Brittany Moccia received three of them, including a bronze for her 9.45 routine on the balance beam. The Scouts’ top returner from last year’s sixth-place team at state also finished sixth in the all-around (9.1125) and eighth on vault (9.6). “I think I did the best I could for this meet,” Moccia said.

She last competed as a gymnast in the seventh grade. “I missed it,” said Rossman, who attended Culver (Ind.) Academy last year. “Being with the team tonight [at the Straus Invite], getting support from everybody … I’ll remember a lot about this meet.” Rossman finished second among teammates in the allaround (21st, 7.9375). For dennis and cynthia, a jaunt to Croatia is stirring experience

We traveled to Croatia this past November. My husband’s grandmother is originally from Croatia. We didn’t go back to dig into family history, but he hadn’t been there in more than 40 years. We looked into a cruise, but the Adriatac Sea was cold and choppy that time of year. Instead, we went with a group and traveled the coast by Mercedes bus. It’s the first time we did a group tour, but we’re glad we did — driving along the Adriatic coast is not for the light-hearted. Opatija — a small coastal resort area — is where we started. Many West Europeans travel there for holiday. Then we went to historic and large cities. In Split we saw the historic Diocletian Palace. He was a Roman emperor from Croatia who built it after he retired. He was best known for identifying four people to take over Roman rule rather than one. We came across a group of a capella singers who performed there. They had exquisite voices. We came home with their CD and have listened to it often.

“It’s the most scenic spot on the Adriatic coast. It has an old town with marble streets closed to cars, along with museums and cafes.”

Cynthia Quick, who works at Ragdale Foundation, and her husband, Dennis Tuskan, enjoyed a trip to Croatia late last year.

THE THRILL OF THE CHASE. THE LAP OF LUXURY. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. As a true Aston Martin, motorsport has played its part in the development of our four door sports car. In May 2010, Aston Martin contested the annual Nürburgring 24 hours in a near-standard roadregistered Rapide. With only minor changes to satisfy racing safety requirements, this car – complete with standard Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission – ran fast and faultlessly throughout, achieving second in class and 34th overall from a starting grid of 200 purpose-built racing cars. As with all our racing activity, lessons learned in that gruelling event have directly influenced the development of future road car products, including the Rapide S.
