Their claim to fame is a quiet one

K

arl Marx never lived on the North Shore, which was probably good — his politics are more fit for wild-eyed college professors than for suburban families. Groucho Marx never set up house here, either — he probably would have failed at elegant parties, where saying “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception” would have alienated many a dinner partner.

But another famous Marx lives on the North Shore, quietly. He has remained out of the spotlight, and so has his wife, Cynthia Rhodes, who starred in “Dirty Dancing” and other movies. Call them the anti-Kardashians.

Grammy award winner Richard Marx — who has compiled hits as a singer and as a songwriter over four decades — will make a rare appearance as a Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society Local Legend on Saturday, Nov. 2. The musician — who has sold more than 30 million albums and enjoyed a slew of love song hits — will be interviewed by radio personality Roe Conn on the Lake Forest High School stage. It promises to be an entertaining afternoon.

A few years ago, one of our sons met Richard Marx by chance at Starbucks. Then 3, he spilled hot chocolate onto the artist. Rather than throw a fit and state his credentials as a celebrity, Marx shrugged it off — with three boys of his own, he knows accidents happen. Read about him on the

The WGN anchor is welcomed into tens of thousands of living rooms each weekday, where he eschews the phony banter that often mars television news and comes across as a normal guy. Leaving his Marx

Celebrated musician to highlight Local Legends event heavyweight Sara Lee and also raised tens of millions of dollars to create Millennium Park in Chicago.

This will be a chance to hear the stories and inspiration behind all of his No. 1 hits, Grammy nominations and awards.”

Marx’s musical resumé — which features a slew of romantic love tracks — hits many high notes. With Luther Vandross in 2004 he captured the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for “Dance With My Father,” which he co-wrote. Artists he has written or produced music with include Barbra Streisand, Kenny Loggins, and Keith Urban.

He has sold more than 30 million albums. His first seven singles all reached Top 5 on the Billboard chart, a feat never equaled by any artist.

“Hands down I’m a songwriter. That’s what I put on my custom forms,” Marx said in an interview on examiner.com last year. “It’s not the most fun part, though; it’s the hardest.

Songwriting brings out my self-hatred, but it also brings me joy.”

Conn says Marx’s versatility lets him stand apart him from other musicians.

“To get all of these talents in one person is really rare,” he said. “It distinguishes him from 99 percent of artists.”

Marx enjoyed musical roots. His father Dick Marx, was a jazz pianist; he composed “Here Come the Hawks,” the Chicago Blackhawks team anthem. The North Shore native is married to Cynthia Rhodes of “Dirty Dancing” fame, and they have three children; Brandon, Luca, and Jesse.

Though Conn admires Marx’s musical work, he also points out his munificence as a human being.

“It’s amazing how much time and energy he puts into charity work,” Conn says. “He does a lot of private shows for charity and doesn’t charge for them, unlike most artists.

“Richard is also a candid and funny guy. He’s a great storyteller. People will be amazed how entertaining he is.”

Conn also notes they may enjoy compelling visuals at the event as well. Says the radio personality, “He’s got great hair. I never had that lion-like mullet.”

photography by jim prisching ■ by david sweet It would have made sense had musician Richard Noel Marx lived in Los Angeles, close to recording studios and the Hollywood scene. No one would have given a second thought had he settled in Nashville, since country music is one of his fortes.

But Marx — a North Shore Country Day School graduate and Grammy Award winner — lives in Lake Bluff. Though the sounds during Sunday summer evenings at Bluffinia entertain residents before the workweek begins, the village is not particularly known as a hotbed for musicians. “(This area) has a very self-correcting environment for

ego and people who take themselves too seriously,” explains good friend Roe Conn, a WLS-AM 890 Radio personality.

“The beautiful thing about Richard is that he’s neither.

He’s thoroughly set to live in an environment like this.”

On Saturday, Nov. 2, Marx — whose low-key manner belies his international fame — will be interviewed by Conn and likely play acoustic guitar during the annual Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society Local Legends event at Lake Forest High School. The 50-year-old joins past participants James Lovell, Adrian Smith and John Bryan in the Local Legends lineup. Lovell is known around the world as a pioneering astronaut, one played by Tom Hanks in the movie “Apollo 13;” Smith is the architect of the world’s tallest building, and Bryan ran international

The Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park was awarded the Janet Burgoon Philanthropic Excellence Award for a Distinguished Community Partnership at this year’s North Shore Senior Center’s fall benefit.

Located in Northfield, the senior center is one of the many grantees awarded money by the foundation to implement healthcare and social services in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

The Deer Path Middle School eighth-grade class will participate in a Community Service Day on Friday, Oct. 25, where all 270 students and their teachers will spend the morning volunteering at one of 12 charities.

The charities include Westmoreland Nursing Home, Northern Illinois FoodBank, Winchester House, Equestrian Connection and others.

Alumna and actress Susan Saint James delivered an address to mark the start of Reunion Weekend at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart this month.

Saint James shared a Power Point presentation of photos of her high school years along with thoughts on how the all-girls, Christian-based education she received prepared her to face life’s challenges – such as the huge one on Nov. 28, 2004, when a private plane crash claimed the life of her 14-year-old son, Teddy Ebersol.

She shared the words that helped turn her life around following this tragedy: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience – we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

Her advice to the students: “There should be no time limit on finding out what you want to do and where you want to go to college. Don’t feel pressured into making such decisions. Have a lot of fun, laugh a lot and when you’re tired — take a nap.”

Duo embraces superhero theme to aid patients

How many strips of duct tape does it take to suspend a football coach on a wall? About 180.

The act was led by Lake Forest Academy students Lexi Silver, 15, and Tyler Madeley, 17, to raise money for their latest endeavor. This summer, the duo established Pediatric Oncology Warriors (POW). Money raised through superhero-themed fundraisers will benefit pediatric oncology patients at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

“It’s hard for teenagers to understand what a family goes through when a child has cancer, but I think this gives us an understanding of how lucky we are,” said Silver.

Growing up, Silver’s parents were involved in St. Jude’s Hospital and brought her to various benefits, influencing her dream to become a pediatric oncologist. As a child, she remembers going around her house with Band-Aids to tape up cracks in the walls or broken toys. She realized that she genuinely enjoyed “fixing” things — like helping the sick.

“The problem is that there is not much one can do about making this dream come true at such a young age; volunteer work at hospitals is usually not allowed until you are 16, accompanied by a parent,” said Silver. “I decided that I wanted to take matters into my own hands and create my own fundraiser.”

Madeley also remembers helping out from a young age. In second grade, he befriended a boy with cerebral palsy and spent his Tuesdays and Thursdays helping out in his special-needs class.

“I just want to make a difference in the field of pediatric oncology,” he said.

The first event, called KA-POW (Kids Aiding Pediatric Oncology Warriors), was held at Silver’s home in Lake Bluff in August. She and Madeley, who is from Lake Forest, ran a three-day camp for kids 10 and under. For $25 a day, the boys and girls received superhero identities, capes, masks and played themed games. They raised just under $600.

The duo has a few more ideas — like playing a superhero movie at the school and selling bracelets — before handing in their donations, which they hope to do in person.

“The huge part of why we’re doing this is to meet the kids, hang out with them and see what they’re going through on a personal level,” said Silver.

The students — who are both part of Gay-Straight Alliance and Harvesting Help — love kids, as is evident through their babysitting, and would consider becoming teachers in the future.

“We hope that we keep on being successful with every fundraiser that we do,” said Silver. “It’s really important that something like this, which can be so heartbreaking, can be stopped.” ■

Reading: I enjoy Worth Magazine; it’s always kind of fun. It’s got everything from business news to design stores, to fashion.

That’s my new hot monthly. And I’m reading “The Power of Why;” it’s about client relationships and how to take really good care of a very few people.

Listening: My music is a little bit all over the place — I like everything from Tony Bennett to Darius Trucker.

Watching: I don’t get the opportunity to watch a lot of TV, but I’m a big fan of the Daily Show. I do watch one program every morning and that’s Squawk Box. It’s on CNBC and it’s a business and financial show, but they get into the effects on luxury markets.

Following: There’s a great peer group that I’m associated with called the Leaders of Design. The organization started years ago, and there’s about 150-180 of us, and it’s top designers and architects around the world.

We do several events every year, and we do an annual summit in an exotic location. I’ve been really lucky to meet a variety of artists and architects. It’s very encouraging — it’s inspiring to see some of your peers and some of your friends and to keep an eye on what they’re doing.

Activity: I started the firm in 1994.

I was just out of school. I opened it while I was living in Chicago and my first three clients were living in Lake Forest, so I opened up [my first studio] in Market Square in, I think, ‘96.

At that point I focused on a lot of historic

properties. It seemed like a good fit, and I have a heavy background in historic architecture. We were lucky to fall into some historic homes — Adler, Shaw. That’s always been the bulk of our work. We still have that residential component, but we’re doing a lot more modern design homes all over the country. That’s been new and fresh and a different clientele.

A few years a go we were introduced to a group of people who asked if we would help with their country club. We have since been referred to a couple of clubs, and now we have a small group of country and golf clubs we’re designing. Still, the mainstay is residential interiors.

We have, including myself, 10 people, and we have two different offices — one in Lake Forest, a smaller studio. About six or seven years ago, when we started to grow, we opened a small satellite office in the city, and have since opened our main studio in the city, about two blocks from the Merchandise Mart. That’s our primary design space now.

Eating: I recently spent three weeks in Italy — I took my wife and my daughter.

Since then, I’m trying not to eat very much!

I kind of overdid it while I was there. We try to be relatively healthy: We have a huge vegetable garden, and we love to entertain.

What is your favorite mistake?

We were coming from Bologna to Parma and of course got completely lost. We wound up on a cattle path at the foot of this castle — Castello di Torrechiara. Someone wandered by and invited us in, and we ended up getting a tour from one of the descendants of the people who built the castle. It ended up being the highlight of the whole trip. We wound up spending almost half a day there, crawling over the place. It was really spectacular. ■

20 | lifestyle & arts sunday breakfast ■ by david sweet A year after Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis chose Texas native Lloyd Bentsen to be his vice-presidential running mate, one of his state’s residents, Larry Potash of Lynn, moved to Longview, Texas, for his first job in television.

That combination of Massachusetts and Texas worked out about as well as the pairing of the Democratic duo, who were trounced in the 1988 presidential election.

“I was there eight of the longest months of my life,” says Potash, enjoying a hearty lunch at The Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. “In Longview, they even threw the word ‘yankee’ around.

“There was a county constable who looked like the Marlboro Man. I asked him what a county constable does.

He said, ‘Son, as long as I’m in this county, anything I want.’ “ Today, Potash is far from Longview and its $5-per-hour job (which included driving a pickup truck filled with big video cameras, heavy lights but no air conditioning to assignments). For 18 years, he has helped anchor WGN Morning News, earning four Best Anchor Emmys in the process.

“You’re asking people to invite you in their living room — wouldn’t it just make sense to be a nice guy?” | Larry Potash What’s his style?

“Just to be a normal person and not the anchor robot so prevalent in the industry,” Potash explains. “One of the ways I got the anchor job was the news director found it refreshing that I said ‘I don’t know what that is’ on the air about something when I filled in once.

“We don’t have phony banter. The go-to ad lib in America is the news anchor chastising the weatherman because it’s raining. That’s not interesting. You’re asking people to invite you in their living room — wouldn’t it just make sense to be a nice guy?”

program’s unserious nature, the news show added an hour on Sept. 3 and now runs from 4 a.m.-10 a.m. weekdays (Potash appears for the final four hours). Working on a morning show means Potash must wake up in Lake Forest at 3 a.m. for the drive to Chicago — but also means he can imbibe a Sam Adams beer by 11:30 a.m., the workday over as he sits at the Deer Path.

“The shift is probably the toughest part of the job,” he says. “I go home and take a nap, then get on the computer and give producers heads-up on stories.”

Growing up in Lynn, Potash played baseball and basketball.

“For some reason I thought, ‘What am I going to be when I grow up?’ I thought I’d be a sportscaster,” he says. “How great to go to the Celtics’ game and be paid.”

While attending Emerson College, he did — during the 1980s glory days of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish (“he spent some time with us and made us feel skin tightening important”). hospital,” he recalls. “I thought I’d get caught the first two minutes I walked in the door — I was in there for hours. We stood over a baby’s crib. That got my adrenaline going.”

Celebrities are sometimes part of the WGN Morning Show — a nd they can be unpredictable.

“Tracy Morgan took off his shirt and laid across the anchor desk — that was a viral moment,” Potash says.

As a local celebrity himself, Potash is occasionally invited to attend charity events. At one, he was asked to box. He assumed it would be a lighthearted bout.

“This guy came out and tried to take my head off,” Potash says. “He snapped my head back twice. The next round, I went crazy on the guy, and they stopped the fight.”

Although it may sound that Potash acted a bit like Howard Beale in “Network,” that’s not even the news anchor’s favorite movie about television journalism.

The event also includes a lecture series with programs by Vahlkamp and William Cook of the United Kingdom and a program by the costume curator at the Winnetka Historical Society.

Reynolds said the event is as much for design novices as for professionals.

“The dealers are so knowledgeable. You’ll hear about the history of their pieces and how you would use the piece in your home,” she said. “Every piece has a story, and you’ll be able to talk to the person who knows it and then take it home and share that story.”

Reynolds has been an active member of the Women’s Board of the Winnetka Community House since she moved to town from Atlanta five years ago; she learned about the Community House through the materials she received from her realtor and was pleased to fund it offered dance classes for her daughter and yoga for herself.

“I went over there and found this historic building and was just amazed by all they do for the community,” Reynolds recalled. “And then I was intrigued to find that they do not receive any money from our taxes.”

She quickly took an active role in fundraising with the Women’s Board – including her current role as chair of the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show.

Nick Vahlkamp has been collecting black-andwhite photographs since he started his career as an art dealer. He doesn’t feature any photography in the Kamp Gallery – which he moved to Winnetka from Chicago 23 years ago – but he’s always been interested in the art form.

Vahlkamp will share this passion for photography and pieces from his personal collection as part of the Stracks-Zimmerman Lecture Series during the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show at the Winnetka Community House from Oct. 18-20.

Vahlkamp is similarly passionate about the show, which he calls the hidden gem of the Chicago area.

“I think what’s most impressed me about the show is that it has shown a remarkable range of 20th-century art and design and artifacts, really, of the last 120 years,” Vahlkamp said.

Hosted by the Women’s Board of the Winnetka Community House, the Antiques + Modernism show annually brings more than 50 dealers together to showcase and sell their wares. All proceeds from the show benefit the Winnetka Community House.

Dealers from the U.S. and Europe will feature designs from the 17th century through the mid20th century. These include American, British, French and Asian antiques, as well as pieces from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Mid-Century Design movements. Visitors will find furniture, silver, ceramics, jewelry, garden antiques, lighting, rugs, textiles and fine and folk art.

Rainbows addresses children’s grief

■ by kevin beese It isn’t often that you call a non-profit organization for information and wind up talking to the chief executive officer.

But that it exactly what has been happening for the past six weeks to people calling Rainbows For All Children, a Chicago-based agency that helps children navigate through a loss.

Lake Forest resident Bob Thomas, who serves as CEO and executive director of Rainbows, has been fielding calls from parents, grandparents, teachers and social workers looking for help to assist a grieving child.

“I took a call from someone in South America.

I took a call from someone in Korea,” Thomas said. “I’ve taken calls from all over the United States. It’s been very rewarding to talk with people looking for assistance.”

Thomas picked up the practice of doing other employees’ jobs when a young executive with American Hospital Supply. He continued the practice — doing everything from going on sales calls to working in customer service — as an executive with Pepsico, Baxter and other companies.

Thomas also led start-ups and has done consulting work.

Rainbows, founded in 1983, is a 12- to 14-week program that meets at schools and other community locations to help youths grieving from a loss — whether it be from the death of a parent, divorce or military deployment.

Programs meet weekly and are led by an educator or another trained professional, such as a psychiatrist, who volunteers his or her time. More than 2.7 million children have gone through the program so far.

There is a Rainbows class that meets in Northbrook. Thomas hopes to expand the program to other North Shore locations in the near future as he has seen need in the area increase.

Thomas said helping youths through grief issues is paramount for their success.

“I call these ‘the yuck factors’ in life,” Thomas said. “But they are things that are not talked about. Kids really struggle in these situations.

The Rainbows program has been proven to get results.”

Thomas noted that youths who go through Rainbows wind up more self-confident, less likely to have problems with drugs or alcohol, less likely to get involved with gangs, and wind up better parents as adults.

The Lake Forest resident saw firsthand the toll that loss can take on children. Thomas lost his wife to brain cancer nine years ago and helped his three sons through the grieving process.

“I helped them the best I could, but I wished there was more help for them,” Thomas said.

While studying to become a deacon in the Catholic Church, Thomas became aware from a friend’s email last year that Rainbows was looking for a new leader.

“I saw this as a way of combining my business skills with my pastoral work,” Thomas said.

A benefit for Rainbows will be held Nov. 2 at The Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., Chicago. The event, “Canvases and Corks,” will feature wines and auction items, including many once-in-a-lifetime experiences, Thomas promises.

While the agency will benefit greatly from the fund-raiser and larger donations, it also greatly appreciates smaller donations as well, Thomas said.

“The $50 and $100 donations go a long way to benefitting our children,” Thomas said. “We are a lean, high-functioning organization. Teachers and other professionals who work with us do it on a pro-bono basis. They all do it to help our children.” ■

Gregg Shapiro: Karen, you originated the role of Julia Child in To Master The Art in the 2010 TimeLine production. What does it mean to you to be returning to it in this production?

Karen Janes Woditsch: It’s a privilege. I was hoping when we did the first run in 2010 that I would have a chance to do it again. I felt like a lot of people wanted to see it and because they (TimeLine) had to produce the rest of the plays in their season, its life got cut short. I was looking forward to the opportunity to being able to do it again; also, because it’s a joyful production and a very inspiring and fun role to play. I had done a couple of shows before this remount that were fairly sad, heavy-duty material, so when I knew that I got to play Julia Child again, who just by the nature of her character allows you to be big and gregarious and full of wonder and joy and all that kind of stuff, I was really looking forward to it [laughs]. I needed a little joy back in my life. I feel more prepared to do her this time than I did before. The fear is gone. That’s a good thing, too.

GS: What are the challenges and rewards of playing a real person?

KJW: The fear of people not buying it is the first hurdle to get over. I think this happens with anybody playing the historical character, such as Nixon in the play Frost/Nixon or this play. You know the audience is going to come in and, initially, for the first five or 10 minutes think, “Do I recognize that? Is that Julia Child? Is she her?” Hopefully, eventually the story will take over and they stop thinking about that. Or you do a good enough job that it’s not an issue.

That is the first fear. The other fear is making her a caricature instead of a character. Because she is such an iconic personality — there’s a definite voice, there’s a definite body type to her. She strikes a figure. But the beautiful thing is that the script is so much about the relationship with her husband and her relationship to finding out who she is that it keeps me true. Instead of making a caricature it keeps me true to making a human being that is actually looking for her way through life.

GS: I’m glad you mentioned the physical aspect because Julia Child was more than 6 feet tall. Is it an illusion or are you also tall?

KJW: [Laughs] I’m not that tall! I like to say I’m 5’9. My husband has pointed out to me that I’m actually 5’8 and 5/8 or something like that, but I like to round up. I’m certainly not as tall as she was. With the help of some lovely large espadrilles shoes and walking around like her… she also had a way of moving that I think a lot of taller people have. Their hips are a little tighter because they’ve grown so quickly.

She has a way of moving that makes her look bigger, too. That, I think, helps with the size.

GS: Do you or did you speak French before playing Child?

KJW: No, I didn’t speak French. The woman who plays Simca, Jeannie Affelder, speaks French fluently so she would help me with my French. Julia didn’t really know how to speak French until she got there.

GS: The play makes mention of Child’s “fluty voice.”

KJW: [Laughs] GS: What’s involved in getting into voice for the character?

There are certain words that I love to say before I go on stage every night. She speaks a bit nasally. She speaks at the roof and back of her mouth. She uses vowels for all they’re worth. When she says (in Child’s voice) “potatoes”, she really sends out that (in Child’s voice) “o”. I would concentrate on words such as (in Child’s voice) “potatoes” and “bouillabaisse” and things like that. I would just repeat words like that over and over again.

“Canned” and “lamb” are also good. [Laughs] The poor woman Beulah, who puts my wig on every night, has to hear me say these completely nonsensical food terms in a fluty voice before going on stage.

GS: Child singlehandedly transformed the world of cooking and cookbooks. How are your cooking skills?

KJW: Much improved thanks to this play! I did not have a copy of Mastering The Art of French Cooking before I did this play. My mom and dad are in town visiting right now, and I made them Boeuf Bourguignon.

I made it in 2010 when I first did the show along with her onion soup, and always her eggs. Her eggs are unbelievably delicious. The Boeuf Bourguignon I made this time around was much better than my first attempt.

My husband is much happier than he was before the show. I was an okay cook but now I’ve bumped it up a notch. She’s taught me well [laughs].

GS: There is an abundance of food in the show.

How much eating actually takes place onstage?

KJW: We eat her scrambled eggs, and they are absolutely fantastic every night. I taste some onion soup and a grape, and then a little teeny appetizer at the end of the play. There’s a lot of tasting, it’s not full meals. The eggs are kind of the centerpiece of the cooking because it’s one of her easiest things to make and they are truly dynamite. I look forward to that scene so much.

GS: So you don’t have to diet or spend extra time at the gym while playing Julia?

KJW: No, actually the director wanted me to gain a little weight. The first time we did the show in 2010 I was definitely heavier by the end of the play. Because not only do you eat onstage but everybody gets inspired by her cooking; so all the cast members started to bring something in every day. There was cake or Julia’s quiche.

Everybody brought food in constantly. We were eating off stage and onstage. It got a little out of control [laughs].

GS: There is also a healthy serving of humor in To Master The Art. What are the rewards of the comedic aspects of the play?

KJW: The rewards are always instant gratification from the audience. The big reward of most humor, specifically in this play, it starts out from awkwardness. There’s recognition at the top of the play from the audience that if someone walks into a foreign land, has this big personality, but you don’t know who this person is yet. They can’t speak French and they’re feeling very vulnerable and out of place but they still want to attack this new life with vigor. I think audiences recognize that discomfort and a lot of the laughter comes from that. ■

Black-tie event ensures youth enjoy fun in woods ■ by joanna brown Summer camp is a special time for many children. It includes exciting activities, new friends — and independence from parents.

Winnetka’s Julie Rocap sends her three children to overnight camp each summer, and she always notes the positive changes in them after just two weeks away.

“They’ll all learn to cooperate when they have roles to keep their cabins clean. They’ll learn to feel valuable.” | Julie Rocap “They come home feeling more responsible and ready to take on more,” she said. “They have more confidence. Their time away is important for developing leadership among their peers.”

That’s why Rocap and the North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement Association throw all their energy into the annual Glitter Ball. Money raised at the Nov. 2 black-tie event at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago annually sends 400 at-risk Chicago children to summer camp in Wisconsin.

Guests will enjoy cocktails and dancing, as well as live and silent auctions. They’ll also learn about The House in the Wood Camp, in Lake Delevan, Wis. “We feel strongly that the opportunity to get out of the city will make these kids healthier,” said Rocap, who is the board’s president. “They’ll swim in the lake and have traditional camp experiences, as well as focused efforts to develop responsibility

and confidence, leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution and basic social skills. They’ll all learn to cooperate when they have roles to keep their cabins clean. They’ll learn to feel valuable.”

The North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement has been raising funds for The House in the Wood Camp since 1936, through fashion shows, food demonstrations and antique fairs. But since 2006, the Glitter Ball has dominated the board’s annual calendar.

It’s for that reason that the North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement set out this year to create a logo for the Glitter Ball. Co-chair Elizabeth Rose of Winnetka admitted it was no small task.

“The question was how to convey what we raise money for (a children’s overnight camp) and marry it to a beautiful event at the Four Seasons,” she said. A twinkly gold background and elegant font representing the annual gala, combined with the silhouette of a leafy tree with a tire swing in motion, fit the bill.

The tree and tire swing, Rose explained, are central to The House in the Wood Camp, and serve as a gathering spot for important announcements and meetings.

“When kids come away from camp, they say it was their favorite place,” Rose said. “The tree is a special place at camp, and the image is strong enough to convey the campers’ experience. The image is childlike.”

Rose’s three children are summer campers, “and all three will tell you it’s the best weeks of their life. Multiply that by 10,000 for kids who don’t get to leave a four-block radius in Chicago. The things that we take for granted are so special for them.”

“Regis Durbin is tough,” said DeWald, a Chicago fireman who has been coaching for the past 23 years, including four at LF. “I like going to war with this kid.”

The senior arguably had his best game of the season on Oct. 11 in the team’s 38-7 drubbing of host Libertyville. He rushed for 50 yards on eight carries and threw for 169 yards (14-24-1).

With Durbin at the controls, the Scouts are playing at break-neck speed. They racked up 38 points — 14 in the first quarter, 24 in the second quarter — against the Wildcats, who entered the night with a 3-3 record.

The extremely athletic 5-foot-11, 205pound Durbin likes to play the game fast.

But the secret to his recent success is his ability to slow the game down.

Durbin is starting to see the game differently these days.

“I’m improving,” he said. “I’m getting used to seeing what I see now.”

“He’s doing things now that he didn’t do a month ago,” added DeWald. “The game is really slowing down for him. I think it was just a matter of getting him reps.”

Durbin is a unique athlete. He made a harder transition last year, when he went from sophomore team quarterback to starting safety. He got better each week and developed into a true difference maker for a Scouts team that advanced to the Class 6A semifinals.

“He’s been a QB his whole life,” DeWald said. “So that (playing DB) was even tougher for him.”

“Those positions are pretty different,” said Durbin. “As a quarterback, you’re out there controlling everything. As a defensive back, you’re out there on an island.

“But you’re still out there just trying to make plays,” he added.

Durbin has proven to be dangerous with the ball. His 50 yards of rushing (8 attempts) came on scrambles, keepers, zone-reads and sneaks. His longest gains measured 16 and 14 yards.

Late in the second quarter, on a thirdand-one call, Durbin lined up behind returning all-conference center Peter Durot and barged ahead for six yards.

“Credit Coach Lilja,” said Durbin, referring to LF’s strength and conditioning coach Larry Lilja. “He’s built up our line really well.”

The starting O-line, which also features guards Spencer Bleecker and John McArthur and tackles Thomas Kennedy and Daniel Sullivan, also gave Durbin time to pick out receivers. Nine of his 14 completions

“We’ve got some receivers with good hands. Coach Ahmad Merritt has done a good job with them,” said Durbin, who spent a big chunk of the offseason throwing to his wideouts and getting his timing back. “We’ve got some guys who can do things.”

Durbin delivered the ball to six different receivers in the win over Libertyville: David Glynn (5-41), Matthew Hargitt (2-28), Liam Howe (2-27), Hub Cirame (2-13), Jack Preschlak (1-22) and Geno Quaid (1-20).

“I’m a big fan,” said Lake Forest head coach Chuck Spagnoli. “He’s playing with great poise and showing great leadership.

He’s growing into his role, and he’s playing better each week. He’s doing everything he can to help us win.”

Durbin and Glynn were at their combo best during the final drive of the first half.

Glynn was targeted five times and made four catches, including a juggling-act 16-yarder for a first down, and a leaping 4-yarder for a touchdown.

“I’ve been throwing to him for a long time,” said Durbin. “We’ve got a good connection.”

Tricky: Libertyville’s lone score came early in the second quarter on a double pass.

The trick play was perfectly executed, as

Wildcats running back Conor Simpson — a huge threat to run — caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage from quarterback Anthony Monken and lofted a spiral to a wide-open wideout, Riley Lees.

Lees, a sophomore speedster, turned the play into an eye-opening 77-yard touchdown to trim LF’s lead to 17-7.

The gimmick play got the best of cornerback Andrew Nelson.

“I jumped on him pretty good,” said Spagnoli.

Moments later, Spagnoli became very fatherly.

The head coach went over to Nelson and said, “I’m over it. Are you over it?”

“They caught us,” the coach added. “It was a lesson learned.”

And Spagnoli is not about to lose faith in his senior defensive back.

“Andrew is a great kid,” said Spagnoli.

“And I think the world of him.”

Midway through the third quarter, the Wildcats pulled out another trick play: the halfback option. It went for 46 yards to Lees, but this time Nelson didn’t lose his place on the field.

“He was right there,” said Spagnoli. “It just didn’t come down into his hands.”

Later in the game, Nelson came up with

an interception. He finished the contest with four tackles.

Notable: Cirame opened the game in spectacular fashion, returning the opening kick off 83 yards for a score.

Cirame also rushed for three more TDs (1, 15 and 2 yards) and ended the game with 156 yards on 27 carries. The splendid back has 23 TDs this season.

Senior Colin St. Amand had one of the game’s best gains from scrimmage, when he traveled 42 yards on a reverse to open the second quarter.

The Scouts, who will host Stevenson (5-2) on Oct. 18 (7:30 p.m.), had a number of difference-making plays on defense, including five sacks, eight tackles for loss and two interceptions. They limited Simpson to 30 rushing yards.

Senior Austin Mcllvane recorded two sacks, including an 18-yarder on the first series of the second half, and two TFLs on run plays.

The other leaders were Trent Williams (3 TFLs, sack), Jack Traynor (sack, TFL), Jack Kutschke (4 tackles), Nicholas Athenson (1/2 sack), Jake Cirame (1/2 sack, ½ TFL), Nicholas Monfardini (TFL) and Charles Moss (INT).

Kane, Ramblers find their way — back to state tournament ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com The battery in Isabelle Kane’s range finder died on the fairway of the ninth hole at the Class AA Buffalo Grove Sectional.

Instead of panicking, Loyola Academy’s senior ace chose to shrug off the temporary setback and go with her instincts on Oct. 14.

“I wung it,” she said.

Kane wung well from about 130 yards out, landing her iron shot 15 feet from the hole at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course. Her medalist round of three-under-par 72 (36-36) was filled with plenty of other positives, and it certainly highlighted the Ramblers’ runner-up effort (318) to champion Prospect (311).

“I play with a different mindset for the regional and sectional than the one I use for the regular season,” said Kane, who carded a medalist round of 70 as the Ramblers (312) claimed the Glenbrook South Regional championship on Oct. 9. “I try not to worry about others at this point in the season.

“You can’t get caught up in thinking about the players you think you have to beat,” she added.

Loyola earned its sixth state team berth in seven years under Ramblers coach Jim Jackimiec. LA freshman Margaret Hickey shot a 78, placing her in a tie for ninth place and second among teammates. Senior Taylor Gentzkow contributed an 83 for the Ramblers, while classmate Katie Boesen shot an 85.

“We’re hanging in there,” Jackimiec said near the end of the sectional. “The conditions, they’re fine. But the wind is blowing in the opposite direction it did during our practice rounds here.”

Kane tied for fourth place at state a year ago, shooting a 75 at the rain-shortened meet.

The Class AA state meet starts Oct. 18 at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur.

New Trier Before the BG Sectional earlier this week, junior Lois Suh had never heard of Reggie Jackson and how the former Yankees slugger and clutch postseason performer earned the nickname, “Mr. October.”

It was understandable. Suh is a junior at New Trier High School; Jackson hit three homers — on three consecutive first pitches — way back in the 1977 World Series.

Angel Estrada, Highland Park Boys Cross Country: He won going away. This talented senior raced to a first-place finish at the Wheeling Invite on Oct. 12. His time (15:33.9) was 10 seconds better than St. Viator’s Nick Brey. The Giants, who placed eighth (207 points), also received a strong showing from junior Ben Casey (15th, 16:20.3).

On Oct. 5, Estrada finished third (15:18.01) at the Pat Savage Invite at Niles West. Brett Davidson was 34th (16:07), while Casey was 42nd (16:22).

Mimi Smith, New Trier Girls Cross Country: The junior has developed into a solid No. 1 runner. She recorded a 17:18.5 to win Flight 1 at the Wheaton North Classic by almost seven seconds on Oct. 5.

The Trevians, who took first place with 15 points, also won Flight 3 with freshman Molly Schmidt (18:09.3), Flight 5 with freshman Cara Keleher (18:30.7) and Flight 7 with senior Ann Sanfilippo (18:53.6).

Marni Pine/Lily Pickus Highland Park Girls Cross Country: Pine and Pickus came in 18th and 19 th respectively at the Wheeling Invite on Oct. 12. Pine was clocked in 19:50.8.

Pickus’ time was 19:52.4. Sophomore Celia Margolin was 25th (20:06.5).

The Giants were ninth as a team (209 points).

Kathryn House, Loyola Girls Cross Country: In helping the Ramblers to a title (78 points), House claimed runner-up honors in the Pat Savage Invite at Niles West High School on Oct. 5 in a time of 17:47.99. Teammate Sarah Kelley was fifth overall (18:29.75), while Caroline Zaworski was 11th (18:49) and Jackie McDonnell was 20 th (19:17).

Caroline Watts, Woodlands Girls Cross Country: She came up with another top-10 performance on Oct. 5, when she raced to an eighth-place finish at the Niles West Invite. Her three-mile time was 18:44.7.

Caroline Blank/Halle Frain Lake Forest Field Hockey: Blank sparked the Scouts to a 7-1 victory over host Glenbard West on Oct. 10, when she scored two first-half goals. Frain came on strong in the second half, when she tallied two goals.

“She’s been our ‘Miss October,’ ” Trevians coach Scott Fricke said of Suh, who shot a teamlow and fifth-place 76 at the sectional on Oct. 14, five days after carding a 77 to help NT finish runner-up (314) at the Glenbrook South Regional.

“Lois,” he added, “has come through for us, especially this month.”

On Oct. 5, the Scouts sustained a 2-1 setback to New Trier. George scored the team’s lone goal on an assist by Ginny McGowan.

Mackenzie Nolan, NSCD Field Hockey: The junior scored a hat trick in the North Shore Country Day’s 7-1 win over Elgin Academy on Oct. 11.

Rachel Gordon, meanwhile, scored twice, including the game-winner, on Oct. 9, when the Raiders edged Loyola 3-2 in the annual Play for a Cure game. Tonya Piergies tallied the other goal. Reese Formolo had two assists.

And on Oct. 7, goalie Julia Kolbe (3 saves) and the Raiders topped Latin 2-1. Tala Glass and Piergies had the goals.

Chris Karamanos, Lake Forest Academy Football: The senior quarterback continued his impressive season. He rolled up 259 rushing yards with three touch downs in the team’s 33-12 victory over host St. Joseph on Oct. 12.

Karamanos also completed two passes to Christian Tchamitchian for 33 yards.

The Caxys (3-4), who have won three straight, turned in a strong defensive performance, allowing only 87 yards. Alec Mesrobian’s interception set up one of Karamanos’ TDs. DJ Melsheimer, Loyola Football: The junior quarterback, who was filling in for starter Jack Penn (shoulder injury), threw for more than 200 yards in his first varsity start. His big night allowed the Ramblers (7-0) to race past host De La Salle 48-0 on Oct. 11.

Melsheimer, who completed 16 of 22 passes for 209 yards, tossed touchdown passes to Joe Joyce (5 yards) and Owen Buscaglia (4 yards).

Buscaglia finished the game with eight receptions for 117 yards with a long of 52 yards. Joyce had four catches for 52 yards.

Kevin Mulhern, New Trier Football: The junior running back shook off a groin injury and came up the highlight play of the night for New Trier, when he scored on a 74-yard run against Glenbrook South on Oct. 11. The host Titans, who had three backs rush for more than 100 yards, claimed a 42-14 victory.

The Trevians (3-4) will have a must game against Niles West (6-1) on Oct. 18 (7:30 p.m.).

Brittany Bishop/Ingrid Wall New Trier Swimming: Bishop and Wall led the way as New Trier improved to 6-0 with a 126-60 win over host Evanston on Oct. 11.

Bishop, a junior, came up with a pair of individual wins: 200 IM (2:09.61) and 100 butterfly (59.26). Wall, a freshman, picked up wins in the 100 free (52.57) and 100 breast (1:03.89). Wall also teamed with Katy Christian, Nicole Retondo and Amelia Girgenti in the winning 200 medley relay.

The Trevians also won the 200 free relay with Grace Ford, Christian, Mia Haggerty and Christine Ryan and the 400 free relay with Hope Hayward, Samantha Adams, Caroline Good and Girgenti (3:39.59).

Other winners were Girgenti (50 free, 24.74), Ryan (200 free, 1:55.99), Julia Green (500 free, 5:08.66) and Gloria Ho (diving, 231.35).

Caroline Kane, Highland Park Swimming: She played a key role as the Giants topped host Niles North 101-85 on Oct. 11. Kane took top honors in the 100 butterfly (1:05.05), while she also teamed up with Emma Gelberg, Sam Lask and Danni Cole on the winning 200 medley relay (2:01.13). She added a second in the 50 free (28.18).

Julia Solem had a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke (1:05.71), while Erin Cullather (168.45) and Avery Spitz (154.95) went 1-2 in the diving.

The team’s other win came in the 400 free relay (3;56.61) with Molly Solem, Maddie Cavanaugh, Natalie Gelberg and Sophia Livney. ■

Berkman, Cooper zero in on sectional test after blanking the competition at league meet sports@northshoreweekend.com Nicole Berkman and Janine Cooper never experienced an “uh-oh” moment at last weekend’s Central Suburban League North tennis tournament at Maine East High School in Park Ridge.

The Highland Park High School seniors were too busy taking care of “oh and oh” business at No. 1 doubles Oct. 11-12.

Berkman/Cooper registered a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories after receiving a first-round bye, netting one of the Giants’ four flight championships. None of HP’s seven entrants failed to reached at least a semifinal round, as they combined for 49.5 points to top runner-up Glenbrook North (47) for the team title.

“They’re good … really good,” Giants coach Steve Rudman said of Berkman/ Cooper (20-4), a state-qualifying doubles team two seasons ago.

“The whole group,” he added, “is a really solid one, a hard-working one. We’re having a great season.”

HP’s Kimberly Rhum/Lizzie Raab (No. 2) and Rachel Retsky/Ashley Levin (No. 3) also captured doubles titles last weekend. Each duo downed a Glenbrook North tandem in a final.

Retsky/Levin recovered nicely after falling 6-3 in their first set, taking control with a 6-3 middle set and clinching it with a 6-2 decision in the third.

“They started playing doubles the way we teach it,” Rudman said. “They dissected their way to the win.”

HP sophomore Jordan Abt left as the No. 3 singles champion, defeating a Glenbrook North Spartan in a final — and her final match of the fall.

“She was an incredible gem of a competitor,” Rudman said. “Everywhere we put her [Nos. 3 and 4 singles, Nos. 3 and 4 doubles] this season, she competed well and won big matches for us.”

earned runner-up honors at No. 4 doubles.

HP went 13-2 in duals this fall, losing only to perennial state powers Lake Forest and New Trier high schools. Rudman had never won as many duals in a single season — as either the girls or boys tennis coach at the school.

New Trier Niles West High School hosted the twoday Central Suburban League South tennis tournament last weekend and a dual meet materialized on the second day.

New Trier takes care of business at challenging sectional tournament ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com The competition was fierce at the Class 3A Marist Sectional.

And the layout at the Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen on Oct. 14 was a bit tricky, according to one area coach.

Thus, as a golfer, it’s good to be disciplined, efficient and businesslike.

Save the flamboyance for another day.

It was that kind of day for David Brandfonbrener.

The New Trier High School senior didn’t tear it up, but his solid demeanor and approach paid dividends.

Brandfonbrener was as consistent as ever, shooting a 78 and finishing in a tie for 18th place.

More importantly, his score — fourth best on the team — helped the Trevians to a runner-up team finish. Their 301 score trailed only Glenbrook North (293). Evanston was third (307), one stroke better than Loyola Academy.

“We wanted to get to the dance,” said NT coach Peter Drevline, referring to this weekend’s State Finals at The Den at Fox Greek Golf Course in Bloomington. “Now, we’ll see what happens. We’ll see what we can do there.”

The Trevians’ head coach liked the way Brandfonbrener took care of business.

“He’s been a Steady Eddie for us all year,” said Drevline. “He’s a very methodical player.

“He’s not flashy,” the coach added. “But he’s consistent. He just goes about his business and gets the job done.”

NT’s hottest golfer is junior Will Connelly. He shot a 72 at Old Oak, which placed him in a twoway tie for fifth.

“He’s been our anchor,” said Drevline. “He’s a great ball striker. And right now, it’s his confidence. He’s trusting his game.”

Sophomore Nick Iserloth (75) and junior Jack Junge (76) were the team’s other standouts. Iserloth’s score was good enough to put him in the top 10 (tied for seventh).

Things didn’t start out well for Junge. The junior, who shared medalist honors with Deerfield’s Ian Kelsey at last year’s State Finals, wound up in a tie for 11th.

“He shot a 40 on the front nine and came back with a 36 on the back nine,” said Drevline. “That shows his character.”

Meanwhile, Connelly also was outstanding at the New Trier Regional on Oct. 8. He shared the best score (73) with Loyola’s Michael Abrahamson but lost the three-hole playoff.

The Trevians shot a 309 to finish seven strokes in back of first-place Evanston. Loyola was third (314).

Senior Jack Hedstrom, who carded an 81 in the sectional, finished the regional in a tie for fifth (76).

Fellow senior John Wegener shot an 80 to share 10th place with Brandforbrener and Iserloth. Junge had an 81.

Loyola Ramblers head coach Tim Kane talked about golf’s unpredictability following his team’s fourth-place finish at the Marist Sectional.

“Golf is fickle,” Kane said.

And he added, “It can be brutal.”

Loyola missed advancing to this weekend state meet by one stroke. The Ramblers shot a 307.

Evanston finished with a 306.

“It’s hard on the boys. Really disappointing,” said Kane.

“But it’s been a great season overall,” added the LA coach. “Very successful.”

The season will continue for senior Chris Nolan and sophomore Michael Banas. They shot 75s (tied for 7th) to advance to the state tournament.

Nolan, who also plays hockey at the school, overcame a slow start to the season.

“Once he started to concentrate on golf, he was fine,” said Kane. “It was nice to see him get his focus back.”

Banas is a player to watch.

“He’s never wavered,” said Kane. “He’s been in our top six all season.”

Two of the team’s top players — seniors George Galanis (78) and Michael Abrahamson (79) — finished in the just-missed category. Galanis had a chance to be the final state qualifier, but he lost a playoff to Oak Park-River Forest’s Pat Murphy.

“Abrahamson had a bad hole on the front nine,” said Kane. “He got in a little rut with his putter.

And the course was tricky. But there are no excuses.”

Abrahamson headed to the sectional after earning medalist honors (73) at the New Trier Regional on Oct. 8. The Ramblers shot a 314 for third place.

Nolan finished in a tie for fifth (76) while Banas shot an 81 for 14th place.

Highland Park The Giants experienced some highs and lows at the Class 3A Prospect Regional on Oct. 8.

Senior Patrick Flavin was outstanding once again.

The Miami of Ohio recruit finished three-under par (68) to claim medalist honors on the Mount Prospect Golf Course.

“He’s just been great all year,” said HP head coach Paul Harris. “He did everything he could to help the team.”

And teammate Sam Meitus also stood out. The senior came through with a 10th-place finish (76).

“He’s been a model of consistency,” Harris said.

But, there also was disappointment. The Giants, who qualified to state in 2012, placed fourth in the team standings (308) and missed qualifying to the sectional by four strokes.

“It was a particularly tough regional,” said Harris, referring to St. Viator (299), Deerfield (300) and Prospect (304).

On Oct. 14, those same three teams — Deerfield (302), St. Viator (306) and Prospect (307) — took the top three spots at the Huntley Sectional at Blackstone Golf Club in Marengo.

“They did a great job of handling the pressure of a tough sectional,” said Harris. “At this time of year, you have to manage your emotions as much as you have to manage your game. To get through it, you have to be able to handle adversity.

And these guys did that.”

North Shore Country Day The stage is set.

H igh l ighted by A nd rew Blechman, the Raiders shot a 311 to claim the Class 1A Byron Sectional title on Oct. 14. They beat Byron by four strokes.

The two-time reigning state champs will now compete in the 2013 state meet at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington on Oct. 18-19.

Blechman, a junior, earned medalist honors with a 74. Senior Jack Valenti finished with a 77 to share runner-up honors with Stockton’s Aric Jordan.

The other scorers for NSCD were sophomore Drew Miles (79) and junior Sam Reategui (81).

On Oct. 8, the Raiders opened the postseason by shooting a 336 at the Elgin Westminister Christian Regional. They were two strokes better than Aurora Christian and Elgin Westminister. ■

Loyola Academy’s volleyball team trailed St. Ignatius 24-16 in the second set of a match on Sept. 25, after winning the first set. A third set appeared inevitable.

But Ramblers sophomore setter Katie Randolph — set to serve — stood in a huddle with her teammates, refusing to even think about a decisive set.

She instead shared a premonition.

“I don’t know if anyone really heard it, but I said, “I’m serving the rest of this game,’ ” she said.

Randolph served the ball; LA won the point.

Randolph served again; LA won the point, cutting the Wolfpack lead to 24-18.

On and on it went, Randolph serve after Randolph serve.

LA ended up stunning St. Ignatius 26-24, thanks to Randolph’s dauntless vision and 10-point finishing run.

“I remember the intensity, focus and determination in Katie’s eyes,” recalled Loyola Academy coach Mark Chang, whose club is 19-4. “It’s rare to see all three of those things come together in one moment, and you hope to see that because those are the things that give rise to championships. She was determined to hit every zone I gave her, and she became more aggressive with her (serves).

“This win,” he added, “has become a major reference point in our conversations; it reminds us of what we’re capable of doing and the possibilities that exist for our future.”

Throughout that memorable stretch of serves, Randolph kept setting the ball whenever possible to senior outside hitter Victoria Lord.

“We had so many good points, and I kept going to Victoria because she wanted to beat (our rival) more than anything,” Randolph said. “They had beaten us the last couple of years, and we wanted that match.”

Randolph relished the chance to serve for the set and play a role in each of the key points. After all, she is not one to shrink from big moments on the volleyball court.

Randolph has been smitten with volleyball since she was introduced to the sport at a young age. Volleyball runs through her family’s blood; her parents met in a co-ed volleyball league, and Randolph will still partner with her father in beach volleyball.

photography by joel lerner said. “There’s always been something about volleyball that I liked.”

When she arrived at Loyola Academy, Randolph was a rare freshman to not only make the varsity but to also start the whole season. Randolph split time at setter in Loyola’s 6-2 offense.

“She came in setting great,” Lord said. “She was so dedicated.

She’s a little undersized, but she wanted so badly to prove that she could run a 5-1 offense, which she has this season.”

The 5-foot-8 Randolph worked hard on her blocking to prepare for playing the front row this season. Since she is now on the court all the time, it’s easier for her to take a more active leadership role.

“I couldn’t really establish myself as a leader last year,” she said. “I’m pretty outgoing and now I’m in a position where I can be a leader on the court.”

To prepare for her sophomore year, she played for Chicagobased Powerhouse Volleyball Club and also started taking private lessons with none other than Lexi Zimmerman, perhaps the best setter the state has produced. Zimmerman

starred for Barrington High School and went on to have a decorated career at the University of Michigan.

Zimmerman graduated from UM in 2011 and played professionally before returning to Chicago.

“It’s been amazing to take lessons with her,” Randolph said.

“She knows so much about body position, the way to hold your hands and footwork; I just try to absorb as much as I can.”

Zimmerman said Randolph tries to make the most of each lesson. It was easy for her to see that Randolph is determined to maximize every opportunity to be a better volleyball player.

“The first thing that struck me was her work ethic,” Zimmerman said. “She was playing volleyball three times a day over the summer, and I definitely saw a little bit of myself in the way she grew up. She’s always pushing herself.”

In addition to working on technique, they also spend time focusing on the mental side of setting.

“We talk about game strategy and what to look for on the opposing side of the court,” Zimmerman said. “We’re (covering) a lot of the high level mental aspects that go into being a (top) setter.” ■

For Laura and Jeff Spain offers a perfect getaway

We went to Spain with the kids (Jake and Kate), and one of the best parts of the trip was when we went to Ronda, a little mountain town.

The city is divided by this massive gorge.

Puente Nuevo — which means the “new bridge,” which was built in the 18th century — is about 100 yards across. We were just amazed they were building like that so long ago. We hiked from the top of the gorge all the way to the bottom below the waterfall.

“The cobblestone street was so narrow, cars couldn’t drive down it. We walked around and saw the Arab baths — there’s so much history you can see because it’s such a small place.”

The hotel we stayed at, Hotel Ronda, is really a converted home with seven rooms — we had two since they were so small. The cobblestone street was so narrow, cars couldn’t drive down it. We walked around and saw the Arab baths — there’s so much history you can see because it’s such a small place.

The restaurant in Ronda is Don Miguel. It was hugging the side of the cliff. Jeff ordered pescado and got the entire fish — head, tail, bones and all.

We went to Barcelona. There was a restaurant on the street as wide as an alley that was called Los Torereros. We just said to bring us something. They brought us 20 tapas. We ate tapas until we couldn’t eat tapas anymore.

We went to La Boqueria every morning for breakfast, the local farmers market where we could get pastries, fresh-squeezed juices, fruit, Iberian ham and pizza for breakfast and saw the locals picking up everything from sheep’s heads to kidneys to monkfish for dinner.
