Rauner tax freeze scares LFHS North Shore Madrigals’ officials holiday spirit BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
N
orth Shore officials are not thrilled with Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal for a property tax freeze, worrying it will force them to make cuts at the local level. The governor recently made the freeze one of two conditions for a budget deal with leaders of the Illinois General Assembly for the fiscal year, which started July 1. The state has been without an official spending plan since then. When Rauner and legislative leaders were unable to formulate a budget in June, they agreed to a stopgap measure for the remainder of the year to keep the state operating, according to the Chicago Tribune. Rauner, a Republican, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and state Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) have been unable to reconcile their differences since. Initially refusing another temporary agreement, Rauner said last Continued on PG 10

T
he Lake Forest High School Madrigal Singers spreads holiday spirit throughout the community – a lot of it. In just three weeks, the 34-member a cappella ensemble of student-led vocal musicians gives 20 Christmas concerts. Dressed in Renaissance-era costumes, the singers performed at country club Christmas parties; monthly Rotary Club meetings; senior centers, and Westmoreland Nursing Home’s hospice care facility. “We perform for the super, super wealthy at their country clubs and for people who are in hospice (care) at a nursing home,” said Will Johnson, a senior and one of the group’s three student leaders who has been a member for four years. As they have in the past, the singers go into the hospice portion of the nursing home knowing they could be giving a terminally ill patient the last Christmas activity they will experience. “Last year they sang for a person who died a few hours later,” said Tim Haskett, the director of choral activities at the school. “It’s such a rewarding experience for those people and their families.” For Jonathon Panos, a senior and another of the student

leaders, the time spent at Westmoreland is a highlight of the three-week concert series. He described it as a special spirit of giving. “Words cannot describe the feeling of bringing happiness to a patient in hospice by singing a cappella pieces, or how the happiness of a patient can be seen by the joyful tears streaming down the patient’s face while the Madrigals choir is singing,” said Panos. The emotion is not only evident from the patient but from
his or her family members who share the experience too, according to Sarah Curran, another senior and student leader who is in her second year with the singers. “We were one of the last living people to see this man,” Curran said of a patient listening to them last year at Westmoreland. “It was so special to see his wife in the room and the love they had between them.” Not anyone can be part of the Madrigal Singers. Haskett, who
has been in charge of the group for 30 years, said the students audition, and 17 boys and another 17 girls are chosen. He said the group has been part of the school’s culture for more than 40 years. He picks the three leaders who conduct the group when they perform. “It’s a very student-run group,” said Haskett. “I rehearse them but the three leaders do all the conducting. They bob their heads up and down setting the pace while everyone sings.”
Conducting is one of the challenges for Panos, Curran and Johnson as they use their heads, faces and the hand not joined with their partner to communicate as they sing with the other members of the group. “Throughout a piece, a student leader will subtly lower or raise one of their hands in order to communicate to the rest of the group to either crescendo or decrescendo, or whether a specific Continued on PG 10

“A property tax freeze would be impactful to the city,” said Neukirch in an email to DNS. “It would require review of the city’s budget and assessment to delay capital projects, defer initiatives anticipated for the year, or possibly reduce services.” Neukirch said the levy increase of $524,000 in next year’s budget was done solely for the purpose of partially meeting state-imposed pension requirements. A freeze will not eliminate the obligation. Other Towns Need More Information In some communities like Winnetka, the impact will be less for now, according to Village Manager Robert Bahan. He said the town has held its levy constant for the last three years. The effect of a tax freeze compounds each year it is in place, costing more than the initial revenue loss, according to Jenifer Hermes, the assistant superintendent for business services for Lake Forest Community High School District 115 and Lake Forest School District 67. Hermes said the cut would remove revenue of $467,208 from the districts’ current budgets but the compounded loss over five years could be as much as $1.2 million. “As school district tax revenue is predicated on prior year tax collections, the loss experienced is into perpetuity under the current tax formula,” said Hermes in an email to DNS. DNS reporters Julie Kemp Pick and Emily Spectre contributed to this story.

STICKING OUT IN THREE SPORTS It’s ‘go, go, go’ with New Trier High School superstar Isabelle Sennett BY BILL MCLEAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
I
sabelle Sennett, a New Trier ice hockey player, threw a rubber ball four times before a game last weekend. Her target each time was a teammate. The tosses? Playful ones. Each teammate was using a cell phone in a locker room at the time. A no-no. It’s hard to focus on hockey when you’re texting a message or talking. “I aimed low each time,” Sennett, a senior center and NT’s captain, said. “I didn’t want to hit a face.” The creative enforcement of the team rule worked. “They all,” a smiling Sennett said, “put their phones down.” Since the start of her freshman year in 2013, Sennett wielded a field hockey stick in the fall seasons, a hockey stick in the winter seasons and a lacrosse stick in the spring seasons. She puts a stick down, but only because she has to pick up another. “I was shocked when I made the JV field hockey team as a freshman,” the 5-foot-5 Sennett said. “Huge shock.” Sophomore year, she wasn’t just a three-sport athlete. She was a three-sport varsity athlete. Her one-word reaction to that special triple? “Cool,” she said. “The competitiveness of each sport at New Trier,” she added, “is something I’ve enjoyed each season. It’s intense, being an athlete at our school. Every team, it’s go, go, go. I love it. Playing the sports I do, each has helped me in the other two. I know how important speed is in field hockey, in ice hockey, in lacrosse. You have to think quickly in all three.” With one and a half more varsity seasons to go before she dons a cap and gown, Sennett has been a part of two state championships (field hockey teams, in 2014 and in 2015). She has been an all-stater three times in ice hockey. She earned all-state status in field hockey in the fall. She earned all-state — and AllAmerica — honors in lacrosse last spring. ing. She does a nice job of pumping up the girls and keeping them pumped. She’s taking her leadership seriously, and teammates gravitate to her.” Off all the games Sennett has played in her three sports, a lacrosse contest pleased her the most — even though she went 0-for-8 in shooting in the game. It was a state semifinal against Hinsdale Central this past spring, a year after NT had fallen 8-2 to Hinsdale Central in a 2015 state semifinal. NT edged HC 9-8 in the rematch. “I wrote my college-application essay about that game,” Sennett said. “It didn’t matter, my lack of scoring. That didn’t bother me. The focus in that game was finding ways to give my teammates chances to score. That was such a big win for our program.” Isabelle’s twin brother, Matthew, a club lacrosse player, is Bucknell-bound. Isabelle has two older sisters and a 13-yearold sister, Gabriela, an eighthgrader who plays lacrosse and ice hockey and the cello. Isabelle’s mother, Carolyn, is convinced Isabelle will flourish in a career that doesn’t exist today. Then there’s Michael, Isabelle’s father. Isabelle figured he has missed only three of her ice hockey games. Their favorite post-hockey pastime is to discuss details of each game in the kitchen at home. The discussions are typically lively and sometimes loud. “We like to banter,” Isabelle said. “It’s usually 11 p.m. when we banter. You should hear us, the way we go at it. Adversity — major back surgery — unable to hold down Lake Forest High School’s Braun BY BILL MCLEAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
A
football lands in Christian Braun’s hands on October 21, 2016. Players around the Lake Forest High School senior linebacker stop, unsure if Braun had cleanly intercepted the pass from Waukegan High School’s quarterback on LFHS’s Senior Night. Braun starts to run from the Scouts’ 15-yard line.
front door. Braun hears LFHS varsity football coach Chuck Spagnoli’s voice. Spagnoli had escaped from his office at the school to deliver a case of protein shakes to Braun. Braun gets out of bed to greet his coach.
Freeze that image. In March of 2015, Christian Braun, a LFHS sophomore linebacker/fullback with scoliosis, got wheeled into an operating room, where he underwent four and a half hours of back surgery. Not once did he think he would never touch a football again in a LFHS game. He had never scored a touchdown while wearing a Scouts uniform. He had some eligibility left, two seasons, to do that. Braun stayed in the hospital for six days after the surgery, performed by Dr. John Sarwack. He returned home a heavier young man. He returned home with a pair of two-foot titanium rods and 14 screws joining 13 vertebrae in his back. “I no longer had a bad slouch,” the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Braun recalls some 21 months later. “I ‘grew’ two inches.” Weeks later, he received the green light to lift light weights. Two months later, he started to lift heavier weights. Then he started to jog. “My mom [Marge] was hesitant about my goal to return to football,” says Braun, who, in a freshman ‘B’ football game against Stevenson in 2013, recorded 7.5 tackles. “But she was OK with it when my doctor cleared me.” Braun missed the first four varsity games of his junior season. Week Five was Lake Forest High School’s homecoming game against Mundelein High School. Braun entered the game, as a fullback. Christian Braun was back on a football field, playing in a game that counted. The first play involving Braun? Braun remembers it well. Braun winces while recounting it. “Zone play to the right,” Braun begins. “I took a handoff and im-

mediately saw the middle linebacker. He destroyed me. I think I lost a yard on the play. I ran another play that night, for maybe two yards. “It felt amazing to be able to play again,” he adds. “I was fully healthy again. My coaches were happy for me. I was happy.” A funny moment happened months earlier, when Braun was strengthening his new back in June 2015. He insisted on joining others for a Habitat for Humanity project in Tennessee. His mother, though, was nervous about allowing him to head south on a lengthy car trip. “I told my mom, ‘I am not allowed to lift anything more than 15 pounds,’ ” Braun says. “Then I said, ‘Mom, a hammer does not weigh 15 pounds.’ ” Braun made the trip. Braun pounded nails in Tennessee. A house in the Volunteer State has his fingerprints on it. Braun’s junior-year football
season ended. He still hadn’t scored a TD. At least nine more games of eligibility remained. Braun was hopeful. His teammates? Thrilled for him. Impressed. And inspired. “Christian had every reason to quit football, especially after his surgery,” says senior Charlie Reinkemeyer, the Scouts’ varsity quarterback this past fall. “But he kept battling instead, brought it every day in practice. He did tackling drills, scrimmaged hard, gave 100 percent every day. A team player, absolutely. His goal was to make everybody around him better. I remember one day at practice, a teammate was struggling to finish a sprint. There was Christian, running alongside his teammate, pushing him physically and mentally to finish that sprint under a certain time. It was a great scene. “At the end of practices,” the QB adds, “we’d all shout, ‘1-2-3
Scout Pride!’ There is no clear definition of Scout Pride. But we all know it when we see it. Seeing Christian on a football field was a tremendous example of what Scout Pride is all about.” Braun went out for football as a freshman at LFHS because he knew he’d make scores of friends in the month before the start of classes. He had played football at The School of St. Mary in Lake Forest. His class size in the eighth grade was 53, the equivalent of an NFL’s active roster on Game Day. An aside … Braun’s favorite NFL team is the Chicago Bears. He ran into former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher at a local bowling event. He told Urlacher, “You’re my favorite Bear.” Urlacher glared at the Bears jersey Braun was wearing that day. It was a No. 8, former quarterback Rex Grossman’s jersey. “Then why,” Urlacher snapped
jokingly at Braun, “are you wearing that?” Oops. Back to Braun, in the summer of ’13, Day One in his life as a Lake Forest High School gridder. Most of his football buddies at The School of St. Mary had enrolled either at Loyola Academy in Wilmette or at Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein. “The coaches [at LFHS] were welcoming,” Braun — an only child, an Eagle Scout, a straight-A student, a future mechanical engineering major — recalls. “I got to know many of my new classmates. You have to start all over in high school. Going out for football helped me get off to a good start.”
“I hurried … slowly to say hi to him,” Braun recalls. “To see Coach, to realize that he had taken time from work to drop off that case for me — I felt elated. He told me, ‘Great to see you up and moving.’ ” Lake Forest High School opened its 2016 football season with a 30-6 win at Glenbard East on Aug. 26. Christian Braun, senior, wore No. 26. Braun saw action in three regular-season games before that home game (a 49-7 win) against Waukegan. He treated each practice like a starter treated a game: seriously. “Watching Christian’s will and desire, after facing the adversity he had to face, was awesome,” says Spagnoli, whose 2016 squad lost to eventual Class 6A state champion Prairie Ridge in a quarterfinal. “I was so happy for him. We all were. You watch something like that, and your heart swells with pride.” … Braun, cradling a football, continues to run against Waukegan players. He nears midfield. He picks up speed. Confusion still reigns — on the field, along the sidelines, in the stands. Did Braun intercept the pass? Did Braun pick up a dead ball? Braun isn’t confused. He can smell the end zone. Thirty-yard line, 25, 20, 15, 10, five … end zone. Braun celebrates. His teammates, arms straight up and jumping, celebrate. The referees huddle. All eyes are on the refs. A ref signals touchdown. It’s Christian Braun’s first touchdown in a Scouts uniform … in the last regular-season game of his football career. Stand tall, Christian.
“That was Coach Spagnoli’s touchdown as much as it was The doorbell at the Braun house mine,” Braun says. “All of us were rings. The family dog barks. HE’S GOT A HIGH UPSIDE Tal’s stock continues to rise — especially after terrific effort against Deerfield BY KEVIN REITERMAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
T
al came up big. Too easy? Too trite? Too obvious? Lacking subtlety? Okay. You got me. But the sentence stands. Ziv Tal turned in a BIG-time performance in Highland Park High School’s hard-fought loss to visiting Deerfield High School 49-44 on Dec. 16. His team fell short, but the junior guard, who has developed into a fun watch, arguably was the game MVP in this hotly contested outing, which drew a near capacity crowd on a chilly, snowy night. Highland Park head coach Paul Harris also stated the obvious after watching Tal put 19 points in the scorebook. “Ziv is really good,” he said. “Nineteen points,” the coach added. “That’s good to see.” Tal, a stoic and solidly built 6-foot, 185-pounder with pitchdark hair, was smolderingly hot in the second quarter. He fired in three three-pointers and capped off the eightminute frame with a shot suitable for framing: a quick-released 15-footer from the left wing two seconds before the buzzer went off. “To be honest, I really haven’t been hitting my threes,” said Tal. “But I continue to work on my outside shooting. It was nice to see it translate into a game.” Tal’s 11-point outburst did wonders for the Giants (4-5, 2-1). They needed something, something truly turnaround-ish, after falling behind by 12 points, 17-5. “Ziv doesn’t shy away from a challenge,” said Harris. “I really liked the way he responded in the second quarter. His play spurred us on.” HP’s coaching staff entered the 2016-17 campaign feeling pretty good about Tal. “Our team is following his lead this year,” said Harris. “He played a lot last year, but there were a lot of seniors on that team. “He knows how much this team needs him,” the coach added. “He’s playing with a lot of confidence.” Tal has turned into a true-blue combo guard. He can score the
three-pointer from — where else? — the right corner with 1:36 left in the third quarter to end up as the game’s second-leading scorer (15 points). “We didn’t do a very good job of guarding him in the first quarter,” said Tal. “But after that, we didn’t let him beat us.” But Deerfield, which defeated visiting Lake Forest 41-38 on Dec. 17 to improve its overall record to 5-3, found a way to win the game by attacking the inside with Ben Bizar (13 points), Zach Rothenberg (8 points) and William Murphy (7 points). “The game had a lot of ebbs and flows,” Harris said. “We controlled the second and third quarters. They did the better job in the first and fourth quarters. It was anyone’s game with two minutes left.” The Warriors closed out the win by going on a late 6-0 run and scoring six of the game’s last eight points. “It was a great game. A lot of fun,” said Tal. “Just not the result we wanted.” “I know that the scoreboard says that we lost,” Harris said. “But I’m pleased with the way we’re developing. We’re slowly making progress.” Notable: HP Junior guard Daniel Michelon also finished in double digits (10 points) against Deerfield. The 5-foot-10 guard is playing with a fearless tenacity. … Jack Zeidler, the lone senior in HP’s starting lineup, ended up with eight points and seven rebounds. … Noah Shutan, a junior guard, hit a huge three-pointer with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter, cutting Deerfield’s lead to 43-42. … Camp Horseshoe, BIG AND TAL: Highland Park junior Ziv Tal drives the baseline against Deerfield’s Zach Rothenberg. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Forever young around Santa
BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
S
anta Claus could not meet me at a North Shore restaurant for an interview. Too busy this time of year. “Meet me at one of my workshops in Indiana,” Santa told me on the phone earlier this month. “Ever been to Santa Claus, Indiana, before?” “No,” I replied. “Birthplace of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, right?” “Right,” the big man said. “Oh, and would you be able to transport Blitzen? She’s rehabbing a hind leg in Wilmette. Her last session is the day I can meet you.” You don’t say no to one of the greatest givers ever. “Sure,” I said. I drove the 300 miles. Blitzen, antlers and all, managed to fit snugly in the back seat of my car. I knocked on the workshop’s front door. Santa opened it and welcomed me. He was dressed in his full Santa suit. His thick white beard covered his lips and parts of his rosy cheeks, but I could tell he was smiling. The twinkle in his eye blew his cover. “Come, sit down!” Santa commanded. I sat at the elves’ table. He sat nearby, at the adults’ table. “You will understand why I want you to sit there before you leave today,” Santa said. “What would you like to eat?”
he continued. “Whatever you’re having,” I said. Mrs. Claus and an elf appeared. Mrs. Claus was
holding a plate of cookies. The elf was gripping two glasses of milk. “You said this article had something to do with a Sunday breakfast, so I made sure to request oatmeal cookies for this get-together,” Santa said. “I hope you like them.” I started things off with a simple question. I wanted to know what the most popular gift requests are this year. Before I could finish the question, he blurted, “Hatchimals!” “Most kids these days,” he added, “no longer use the Postal Service to send me their lists of toys they want. They email them
The hearty laugh made me laugh. It was deep and genuine. I c o u l d n’t remember
to me [at listsgalore.com] instead. I prefer the handwritten letters. More personal, you know?” A trickle of sweat slithered down the right side of Santa’s forehead. He removed his enormous coat, revealing candy-canepatterned suspenders and a longsleeved shirt. The shirt was light gray with red letters on the front. The letters spelled PROPERTY OF THE NORTH POLE. “Now, where were we?” he said. Boys and girls of all ages, I found out later, have been asking Santa for Chicago Cubs hats and sweatshirts and T-shirts and posters and books. The Cubs won
the World Series in the fall for the first time since 1908, six years after L. Frank Baum’s The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, a children’s book, was published. The book enhanced Santa’s appeal. “My favorite baseball team is the one in Cincinnati,” Santa admitted. “The Reds. I like the color. Always have. I like wearing red clothes. Rudolph follows the Reds, too, loves them dearly. Be sure to spell that d-e-e-r-l-y.” He paused. He took a sip of milk. It was time. Time for Santa to express merriment. “Ho, ho, ho!” he roared.
the last time I had heard Santa’s signature chuckle, up close and delightfully loud. Was it when I was a five-year-old and the days before Christmas seemed much, much longer than 24 hours? Was it that day at the mall, when he listened to the toys I wanted and made sure I didn’t fall off his lap? Or was it around the time I couldn’t sleep on Christmas Eve because I didn’t want to miss the sounds of Santa’s sleigh and his nine reindeer leaving snow tracks on the roof of my family’s house? Santa and I stopped laughing at the same time. I didn’t want to ask another question. He didn’t
want to answer another question. Santa Claus wasn’t all that interested in being featured in a North Shore publication. His approval rating was holding steady, at 100 percent. Around the world. He was interested in transporting a visitor from the North Shore to a simpler time, when it was OK to sprint down a staircase on Christmas morning, when a bulging stocking above the fireplace was the best kind of stocking, when a plate of cookie crumbs and an empty glass near the fireplace served as indisputable evidence of a jolly man’s presence the night before. Time travel … without moving an inch. Yo u n g again. That was Santa’s plan for me all along. Big man, nice man. I heard a knock on the front door of Santa’s workshop in Santa Claus, Indiana. Santa was expecting another guest, a little girl. An elf let her in. I got out of my little chair at the elves’ table to greet her. She was wearing a pink snowsuit and unbuckled boots. She saw Santa at his big table and tottered toward him, her snowsuit swishswish-swishing every step of the way. “Santa! Santa! Santa!” she shouted. Santa stood up. Santa said two words: “Yes, Virginia?”
