new head of the Beverly Hills Unified School District in California. Bregy said in an email to the District 112 community, sent at 10:15 p.m. December 10, that he is leaving for a position in Southern California. He did not return calls from DailyNorthShore.com seeking comment. Mel Spitz, president of the Board of Education for the Beverly Hills district, confirmed in a telephone interview with DNS.com Bregy has been offered a contract, which Spitz anticipates will be approved by the board when it meets February 12. “I do indeed,” said Spitz when asked if he expected his board to approve the contract. “He has some issues to work out with his current board, but we anticipate he will start here February 1.” North Shore School District 112 Board of Education President Michael Cohn said he was stunned when he learned the news December Continued on PG 12

t some North Shore schools robotics is a required class, but for students the subject is more fun than work. Robotics is also competitive, offering students a chance to win a state championship. A total of 16 teams from the North Shore and beyond competed in the First Lego League regional robotics competition December 3 at Lake Forest Country Day School in Lake Forest, with four advancing to the state tournament January 14 in Elgin. North Shore teams came from Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Wilmette and Highland Park. The Empowering Elephants from Lake Forest Country Day School was the only North Shore squad to make it to state. At LFCDS, designing a robot from Lego building blocks and competing in the league is part of the required Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum. Head of School Bob Whelan said it is critical to the youngsters’ future. “We are training them for jobs that don’t exist yet in industries that don’t exist yet,” said Whelan. “We are training them for transformative competencies where they learn to collaborate to-

the concept but they explain it differently than Whelan. They work together to build their machine. They also go through four rounds of competition but only their highest score counts. Between efforts, they do some tweaking. “We started from scratch,”

said Will Meyer of Lake Bluff, a member of the LFCDS Diving Dolphins. “We took all our ideas and came up with one robot. There was a lot of trial and error and made it work.” Leo Anderson of Highland Park, another member of the Diving Dolphins, said they attack

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A NEW HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH CORY!

“Cory is the consummate real estate professional who gets the job done with no stress! Cory represented us when we sold our home in Wilmette. Cory engaged his team including a handyman and stager to prepare our home for sale. Through his and his team’s efforts, Cory sold our home in ten days! Cory also represented us in the purchase of our new home in Highland Park. He facilitated the process by coordinating the mortgage broker, lawyer, inspector and all the moving pieces. The entire process of selling and buying was smooth, enjoyable and fun thanks to Cory! In addition, he sold our daughter her new home a few blocks away (next to our son’s house)! Now we get to enjoy more time with our kids and grandchildren, especially over the holidays!”

With so many hours dedicated to helping others in the community, I asked what Narula does with her free time. “I co-founded a club at my school called Girl Up, that’s all about empowering women both in our community and in developing countries,” Narula says. “It’s part of the larger United Nations Foundation Organization. So, I’m really into female empowerment and ending the gender disparities that exist. I’m in a few more school clubs related to science and business. Competing teams also score points by helping each other. That is called cooperatition, according to Amy Hintzman, a seventh and eighth grade STEM teacher at LFCDS. Avoca West students inspired to help the homeless BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

W

hen Jessica Hutchinson, principal of Wilmette’s Avoca West Elementary School, sought to teach her students mindfulness, tolerance and how to look outwards and help others, she turned to another student who has put those principles into action. Caleb White, a high school student from Detroit who was named America’s Top Youth Volunteer in 2015, visited the elementary school to share his story. White was only six years old when he saw a homeless person and decided to help others. Now he leads the Caleb White Project, a youth organization that is focused on helping the homeless in Detroit. Hutchinson thought that if her students heard from someone who was making an impact, but was still a student himself, the message would have a bigger impact. She had learned about White from an Avoca parent, who had heard White speak at her company. As it turned out, White’s message “everything big starts somewhere small” resonated with Avoca West students. “They learned we all have the ability to do something big or little things for others,” Hutchinson said.

Students at Avoca West Elementary School take part in a collection drive to help the homeless. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF AVOCA WEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

After White spoke, individual students approached Hutchinson about various projects they wanted to do to help homeless people in Chicagoland. Instead of individual drives, Hutchinson decided a schoolwide effort would reach the entire community. “Rather than it being a small group, everyone wanted to get involved after Caleb spoke,” she said. Initially, the school planned to have each classroom fill a box with various necessities such as Chapstick, hand warmers and water bottles. But the outpouring from the community was so great, instead Avoca West will make one large donation to the nonprofit Journeys The Road Home

located in Palatine. Hutchinson originally expected students to donate a water bottle or a toothbrush. Instead, students and families brought in cases of water and hand warmers and entire boxes of toothbrushes. The students helped move all of the donations into a truck, which Hutchinson will take to Journeys. Journeys will then sort through the donation and deliver certain items to shelters in north and northwest suburban Cook County that are in need. Hutchinson is pleased with the overwhelming response from Avoca West students and families. “It gave everyone an opportunity to be involved. It was really nice,” Hutchinson said.

Working as a hotel purchasing agent at the time, Kapetaneas heard from her brother-in-law The Landmark was for sale and was persuaded to check it out.

“I fell in love with the patio and the soul of the building,” said Kapetaneas. “It had a good vibe. It has a warm and homey feeling. We make it feel like family.” Kapetaneas and her brother, Constantine Kyriazopoulos, continue to operate and innovate at The Landmark, which has gone through several iterations as a bar and eatery in its more than 130year history, according to Kapetaneas.

Starting out as Otto Funk’s saloon in 1885, according to the restaurant’s website, it is Northbrook’s oldest commercial building. Kapetaneas said it became The Landmark around 2001 after more than 50 years as the Cypress Inn. Though Kapetaneas came into restaurant ownership from the business world, her college degree is in culinary arts. She and her brother grew up the children of

a restaurateur and the menu shows the influence of all three. She relishes the opportunity to get creative. “When I get into an expressive, creative mood it will be a crazy food day here,” said Kapetaneas. One of those creations is cheeseburger fries. Kapetaneas calls it the “ultimate fat guy’s moment.” “Anything you would put on a burger is chopped up and put on a bed of fries,” said Kapetaneas. “It’s all topped with an egg over easy and our special sauce.” Though she has changed a lot of things, Kapetaneas said, burgers, beer and the chopped salad are the hallmark of The Landmark. There are 11 hamburgers—all half pound—on the menu, 12 beers on tap and more than 60 in bottles. She said there is always a good variety of local craft beers in the mix. “When I started out I looked for a lot of craft beer,” said Kapetaneas. “Now that it’s mainstream I have fun.” Of the 11 hamburgers, there is family influence in some of them including one suggestion from her father. Kapetaneas said when he had his restaurant a Monte Cristo sandwich was a craze. “He said put a Monte Cristo on the menu,” said Kapetaneas. “The Monte Cristo burger is my variation.” It consists of the ground meat topped with ham, Swiss cheese on a bun dipped French toast style in egg batter and topped with apple aioli. “It’s delicious and rich.” When Kyriazopoulos went on a trip he came back with the idea for the Santa Fe burger. It is wrapped in a tortilla with

cheddar, jalapeno peppers, avocado, tomato, lettuce and black beans. “He went on a vacation somewhere and said you have to try this,” said Kapetaneas. There is a 12th burger. Kapetaneas said there are often customer variations, which the patrons suggest and the staff responds if it can. Though not a lot of restaurants offer a half-pound of ground beef for their hamburger, Kapetaneas said the size has a swarm of virtues. “It’s the perfect size,” said Kapetaneas. “It still retains all its juices and you can cook it at any temperature you want.” Along with the burgers, beer, salads and fries, The Landmark offers more than a dozen starters including calamari and some Greek influence. There are a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and sides. And there is dessert including the original cake balls. For the sports fan, there are numerous televisions behind a bar stretching the length of the restaurant as well as in the dining room itself. Kapetaneas, who was wearing a Chicago Blackhawks shirt during her DailyNorthShore. com interview, said the place is an official Hawks bar. “The red lights go off and we play (Chelsea Dagger),” said Kapetaneas. “We get a pretty good crowd for the games. When the Cubs had their run we did pretty well too.” The Landmark Bar and Grille is located at 1352 Shermer Rd, Northbrook. Phone: (847) 5591919. www.landmarkinnbar.com

Holiday Run Down by Marcy Wilroy, LCSW Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and happiness, but for some they are anything but joyous. Stress and anxiety are more present during the months of November and December than any other part of the year. Loneliness, lack of fulfillment, being compared to other happier family members, and dealing with the idea that it all must be perfect, can cause a tailspin before you know it. Why so common during the holidays? Many reasons… Social isolation. Death of a loved one. Grief and loss. Painful childhood memories of Christmas past.

Don’t let depression take over your holiday season. Give to others who are less fortunate, help your neighbor whom cannot help themselves, invite someone over who has no one, or send a care package to the troops. Most of all, seek help if need.

LOVE & MARRIAGE

Noel, no tell: The secrets to a joyful holiday season are keeping them

Joanna Brown

T

he holiday season is here again: a time for peace, love, joy and hope for the new year. And secrets. Lots and lots of secrets.

There are overwhelmingly joyful secrets, like the mechanics of how good ol’ Santa Claus gets presents into houses without a fireplace and how Grandpa knew exactly which video game Billy

wanted. But when we start talking about secrets in a marIn online riage, the mood shifts. University of Tennessee psysurveys, 60 chologist Beth Easterling worked with colleagues from East Caropercent admitted lina University in 2012 to examine those secrets in a romanto keeping at tic relationship that directly affect or concern the individual but are least one secret withheld from the partner. Study participants were male from their and female, married and not, ranging in age from 16 to 72. In partners at some online surveys, 60 percent admitted to keeping at least one secret point; about 25 from their partners at some point; about 25 percent said they were percent said they currently keeping such a secret. On a scale created by the rewere currently searchers, based on the number and frequency of secrets and keeping such ranging from 0 to 355, the participants’ average score was 217. a secret. Participants kept secrets primarily to avoid hurting their proval, too. partner or damaging their But who would disapprove relationship. To dodge disap- when the best kept secrets

between husband and wife will be revealed under a flurry of wrapping paper Christmas morning? That’s the kind of secret I can support, as can the fine folks at Marketwatch. They created a step-by-step guide to keeping your spouse’s holiday gifts … under wraps. • When you shop online, don’t leave any tracks. Use your phone or office computer when possible; if using a shared device, clear your cookies or browser history. • Create separate accounts at retailers like amazon.com, which use your browsing history to make recommendations the next time you pull up their pages. Better yet, shop local. No one keeps a secret better than our local retailers do. • Turn off push notifications when you shop online. I appreciate knowing when something has shipped, but I don’t want my husband to see the

alert if I leave my phone on the kitchen counter this evening. • Pay for gifts slyly. Use cash in stores, PayPal online, or a nonshared credit card. Another crafty idea is to buy a gift card on your next grocery run and use that gift card to buy your spouse something at his or her favorite store. The only charge on your joint debit card is the grocery bill. I like to wrap my husband’s Christmas gift as soon as I get it in the house and put it under the tree so that kids will keep him honest. And he, I think, uses a combination of ways to keep my gift a secret; primarily, he shops at the very last minute. If you’ve thought of a better way to surprise your spouse, I’d love to hear about it (Christmas 2017 is only 370-some days away!). Email me at joanna@northshoreweekend.com.

GRATEFUL GRETA

Skarzynski glad to play high school hockey at Loyola Academy with her long-time club teammates BY BILL MCLEAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

V

alerie Caldwell cornered Greta Skarzynski. So did Tess Dettling. All three seniors attend Loyola Academy. All three play AAA hockey for the Chicago Mission. But only Caldwell, a center, and Dettling, a wing, played for Loyola Academy’s state championship team last winter. Caldwell and Dettling wanted Skarzynski, a defenseman, to suit up for LA this winter. Badly. “They convinced me,” Skarzynski, a Lake Forest resident and eighth-year member of the Mission, says. “I like it; it’s been fun. I love the range of talent on the team, some playing for the first time, others for several seasons. It’s cool. Valerie and Tess and I are still competing and learning together.” All three hit the ice at American Heartland Arena in Lincolnwood on a snowy night last weekend, skating for LA in a game against visiting Fenwick on Dec. 11. University of Vermontbound Caldwell was dominant, as usual, making hockey look like the easiest sport in the world in a 4-0 LA victory; Dettling, Yalebound, might have been the fastest, scrappiest athlete on blades; and the 5-foot-6 Skarzynski, another Yale recruit, stood out at both ends of the rink. Her style of play screamed, “Effortless!” Her impact was sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious. “Greta,” Loyola Academy assistant coach Mike Fates says, “is so solid, a fantastic skater. She has the ability to lead a rush, and she’s fast enough to get back on defense and do well there, too. Impressive. She takes big, long strides. ABT-UP

Highland Park scoring leader provides plenty of thrills — and one great attitude BY BILL MCLEAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

M

inutes before the start of a hockey game last month, Highland Park High School junior wing Dylan Abt broke one of his skate blades. Right-handed pitches need a right arm. NASCAR racers need a steering wheel. Pianists need a piano. And hockey players need two working blades. Abt scrambled on Nov. 30, looking to borrow a pair of skates for HP’s game against Lake Forest High School at Lake Forest College. Charlie LevineWolf ’s skates were available. Crisis averted. “Do you know what it’s like skating in a game without your skates?” Giants hockey coach Seen Freeman says. “It’s like after your car gets washed, and you’re driving home. Usually your seat isn’t in the position it was in before the wash. You’re constantly adjusting it, up and back and maybe up again, trying to get it to where it feels comfortable. “That’s what Dylan was going through while he was in those skates,” the coach adds. Abt still found a way to score a goal in the Giants’ 4-2 loss, and he struck early, at the 5:55 mark of the first period. The assistant captain had ignored the awkward feeling, the wobbliness. He adjusted in the foreign boots, practically in no time. “I do what I can,” says Abt, HP’s leader in points (16 goals and 19 assists, through Dec. 12). “I love the sport. I love the speed, the plays, the effort it requires, the systems, everything.” If you watched Abt, a thirdyear varsity member, play in the final game of the 2015-16 season, you’d remember a 5-foot-6, 120pounder, a facilitator and a scorer. Today? He stands 5-8, minus skates, and weighs 155 pounds. Taller, bigger, different. “He’s got shoulders now,” Freeman says. “He worked hard in between seasons, put the time in, worked out and got stronger. I love the way he plays, his motor always running, and he’s fearless, absolutely fearless.” Abt worked with the men at

Performance Factory Training in Highwood. Josh and Zeus and Aaron. Shoulder creators, all of them. Abt frequented the facility three times a week. “Dylan,” HP center Ryan Genender says, “keeps going and going on the ice. The heart and soul of our team. He’s got heart, fights until the end, our No. 1 guy.” HP was ranked 43rd in the state nearly eight weeks ago, Freeman notes. The Giants (1015-1) now find themselves hovering around the top 20. HP tied Benet Academy 3-3 on Nov. 26, in Wilmette. That was a signifi-

cant result, a rankings booster. Benet is a perennial power. A perennial power is Abt’s favorite kind of opponent. Abt was ready for the game, from the moment his skateless feet hit his bedroom floor that morning. “You should have seen Dylan skating past and around Benet players, doing what he does best,” Freeman recalls. “I remember, early on, after he had done something well, he skated by our bench and basically said, ‘You guys get it?’ Our guys rallied around his attitude after that. They rallied around his passion. Dylan is our

[Los Angeles Kings center Anze] Kopitar, our tenacious catalyst. We outhit, outshot, outplayed Benet. “The more pressure, the more significant the situation, crunch time, the higher Dylan rises, the more he brings it,” the coach adds. “You have to love what he does for our team.” Off the ice, far from the arenas, Abt is … chill. Freeman says so. Abt’s teammates say so. Abt is likable, fun to be around. The puck drops on the ice. Abt sheds his fiercely competitive demeanor whenever his footwear — other than his skates

or a teammate’s skates — touches other surfaces. “He’s not too intense, not too serious,” Freeman says. “Pretty quiet kid. Observant.”

HIS ARROW POINTS UP Lynch finding a lot of ways to impress the coaching staff at Loyola Academy BY KEVIN REITERMAN , SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

M

att Lynch was no sure thing when the season started. Loyola Academy coach Tom Livatino knew he had something in his senior guard. He just didn’t know what. Lynch, so far, has impressed. He’s been vital. He’s been, if you will, one of the “Lynchpins” for the Ramblers. And yet, Livatino is proceeding with caution with the 6-foot1, 175-pound senior point guard. “[Lynch] is a long way from being the finished product. There’s still room for growth,” said the veteran head coach, who has a way of bringing out the best in a player. “He keeps getting better. But there are areas of his game that still need to be tightened up. We need him to continue to raise the bar so that he becomes an even better player. “But I will say this: If you would’ve told me — before the season started — that Matt Lynch would be playing like this, I would have taken it,” Livatino said. At times, in Loyola’s 56-40 win over visiting Providence St. Mel on Dec. 6, Lynch was the best player on the floor. His numbers back it up: 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Lynch’s shooting touch was feathery good. His two perfectly arced three-pointers in the first quarter glided down the cylinder. In the third quarter, he took a feed from Jack Martinus and fired up a 16-foot out on top. The ball bounced around a little before it begrudgingly fell into the rim — a classic case of Shooter’s Roll. After seven games, Lynch is shooting 80 percent from outside the three-point arc and 58 percent inside it. He’s made 92 percent of his free throws. “We’ve been struggling to score the ball,” said Livatino. “So the extra offense that he’s giving us is really needed right now. “Hopefully, some other guys will start to pick it up,” the coach added. There’s nothing top secret with Lynch’s new-found shooting success.

RAMBLIN’ ON: Matt Lynch, seen here in earlier action this winter, continues to be a bright spot for the Ramblers. PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE PFOERTNER.

In fact, it’s kind of obvious. It came into being the oldfashioned way: P-R-A-C-T-IC-E. “I’ve worked on it,” said Lynch. “Everything comes from practice. That’s how I’ve gained confidence.” Hours in the gym can make a difference.

“When he first came to us, I would not say that shooting was one of his strengths,” said Fundamental U head coach Mike Weinstein, who assigned Lynch to U17 Grey (second team). “But I know that he worked a lot with coach [Kevin] Stineman. And obviously, he put in the reps on his own.”

The pull-up jumper definitely is in Lynch’s arsenal. But one of his best offensive features just might be scoring — or dishing the ball — off the dribble. “That’s what I like to do,” said Lynch. “I like to drive and see what the defense gives me and then make a decision off that.” In the fourth quarter against

Providence St. Mel, Lynch converted three driving layups, including a stop-and-watch-himdo-this one-on-one baseline drive against Eddie Burnett. It was slick. “He’s pretty crafty around the basket,” said Livatino. But, it’s not out of his realm to do something goofy. Midway through the third quarter against Knights, Lynch got his feet tangled up in the lane and threw up an off-balanced, off-target — and dreaded — “error” ball. “Yeah,” he said. “I wound up throwing up some baloney on that shot.” It was not pretty. Give him a two-point deduction. But don’t worry about Lynch. He’ll even out a foolhardy play like that with plenty of wholehearted plays. Lynch knows how to go all out on the floor. He was a recent recipient of LA’s Intangible Player of the Week honor. In an overtime loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 2, he came up with nine rebounds, took two charges, won two 50/50 balls and shot 100 percent from the free-throw line. Lynch, who is averaging 8.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 turnovers per game, would like to be known as Mr. Intangible. “I know that everyone is going to have an off day, but that’s what I’d like to show every game,” said Lynch. “I’m not going to get that honor every week, but I want to get it as much as possible. “Getting the Intangible Player award is pretty rewarding,” he added. “It’s not about skill. It’s all about effort and attitude.” Like Livatino, Weinstein loved Lynch’s playing style. “He’s a tough kid. Hardnosed,” said Weinstein. “He’s gung-ho to learn and to compete. And he’s one of those kids who never complains. “We’ve had a good run of Loyola kids in our program,” Weinstein added. “Every kid we get from there is not afraid to put in the work.” LA senior center Julian DeGuzman and junior guard Kevin Cunningham also played for

Fundamental U last summer. Other former players include Will Plodzeen, Mike Mangan, Ricky Cenar, James Clark and Kevin Kucera. Which brings us back to Lynch. Who on that list of explayers is a good comp? “He’s a little like Mike Mangan,” said Livatino. “Both are athletic. Both are hard-nosed kids. Mike’s more of a highlevel defender, while Matt might be a better scorer. “Just to compare Matt to Mike Mangan is pretty high praise,” the coach added. Mangan is now playing Division III hoops at the University of Rochester. The Winnetka native, a sophomore guard, currently is averaging 19.1 minutes, 4.7 points and 2.0 assists per game for the 9-0 Yellowjackets. Lynch, by the way, is set to join the Division III ranks next season. Late last month, this avid, life-long White Sox fan who lives in Wrigleyville made a verbal commitment to St. Norbert College. “I’ve been wanting to play college basketball since I was a little kid,” he said. “I like the community [De Pere, Wisconsin] and the environment there. I liked everything about St. Norbert. It reminds me of here [Loyola Academy].” Notable: Three days after beating Providence St. Mel, the Ramblers lost a heartbreaker to host DePaul College Prep 61-60 on Dec. 9. Junior Kevin Cunningham led LA’s balanced attack with 14 points. Ramar Evans ended up with 13 points, while Matt Lynch and Jordan DeGuzman finished with 10 points each. Senior Kris Lampley added eight points. With the loss, the Ramblers fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The team now has lost three games by two points or less, including two overtimes. … In the win over Providence St. Mel, LA’s other stat leaders were Evans (15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Cunningham (11 points, 3 threepointers, 4 rebounds) and DeGuzman (7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists).

Nurse breaks fertile ground

he warning from the dean was blunt. Its target was the dean’s interviewee, Jill Spatz, then 37 years old and a former special education teacher at a school in Rogers Park. Spatz, mother of three, was an applicant for admission at Rush University’s College of Nursing in Chicago. The dean wanted to make sure Spatz knew what would happen to her world were she to become a student in the two-year master’s program. “I was told, in essence, ‘We’re going to own you for two years,’ ” Spatz, now 47 and living in Highland Park, recalls. Spatz did not blink after hearing the warning. A shrug … without shrugging. “I tend to take on challenges,” she adds from a seat at Once Upon a Bagel in her hometown. “I like challenges.” Spatz flattened the challenges in the classroom in the next 48 months, achieving a 4.0 gradepoint average. She missed a week of nursing classes to spend time shadowing nurses at Fertility Centers of Illinois-Chicago/ River North. Nurses there were hands-on, excellent listeners, committed professionals. “I learned a great deal during

that week,” says Spatz, who had earned a master’s degree in education from National Louis University after attending the University of Missouri and choosing not to pursue a career as a science writer. “I learned you could be a teacher and a nurse at the same time. You could care and educate at the same time. To be able to apply my teaching background and my interest in science in such a setting excited me.” One of the center’s doctors then was Dr. Brian Kaplan, a reproductive endocrinologist with a large international patient base. Kaplan must have liked Spatz’s tenure as a shadower. He offered her a job — before her Graduation Day, before she passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Spatz graduated. Spatz passed the exam. She became a fertility nurse at the center, where she works today. “I’d gravitated toward women’s health care when I was a student [at Rush], going through nursing clinicals in different settings,” Spatz, a Glenbrook South High

suggest patients buy vitamins and supplements, sometimes a multitude of them,” Spatz says. “They’re pills for women and men, some of them monster pills. There are vitamin sheets for women, vitamin sheets for men. Patients had questions … questions about the cost and the quality of the pills, about the nausea that some cause. I thought, ‘There has to be a better way for women and men to consume supplements.’ ” Another challenge for Jill Spatz, Challenge Slayer. She threw herself into researching a creative alternative to something conventional and came up with Jill Spatz fertility bars, some for women School graduate who grew up in nologist, more than 17 years ago? and some for men. ent in the bars is Kaplan’s recommended antioxidant cocktail. “We wanted to make taking supplements easier,” Barology’s mission states. “No more hunting from store to store for vitamins and supplements, taking a bunch of hard-to-swallow pills or worrying about proper dosages. We believe we’ve provided a better, more delicious way to take vitamins.” A yummy day for Spatz involves running along the Green Bay Trail, spending time with her children (a 17-year-old and 13-year-old twins) and patients, joining Michael for a fixer-upper project at home. Her parents, Harold and Pat, live in Northbrook. Her twin sister, Jacquie, a mother of two, lives in Glencoe. “My dad still works out,” Spatz says. “He looks great; he lost 50 pounds years ago. My mom has a passion for making the world a better place for women. She’s strong and generous, into volunteering, and she lives for her grandchildren.” Jill Spatz? She lives to solve problems. Her company solves one — for many. “It’s not about the money,” she insists. “I started the company to address an issue, to get something done, to help people. I care deeply about the patients I see.”
