ep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and former Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) were quick to criticize each as they tried to show voters how they differ while agreeing on several issues. They discussed gun control, the Middle East, campaign finance reform, social security and more during a League of Women Voters forum October 16 in Lake Forest. Schneider and Dold are competing against each other for the third time since 2012, seeking the right to represent the 10th Congressional District in Congress. The election is on November 8. Both candidates said they favored legislation geared to reduce gun violence, including a law not allowing people barred from boarding an airliner from buying firearms. Dold said he has introduced legislation with that provision. It has not received a vote in the House of Representatives. that went into overtime with seven seconds left on the clock. Canada won the game. Carr also officiated in the 2012 London Games. He said both London and Rio had similarities as well as differences, but the biggest similarity

was the number fans that came out to support the athletes. Local-level games with recently injured athletes might draw a crowd of 50 or 100 people in the stands, he said. “But in Rio when the athletes are representing their country

and put in front of 14,000 fans, it gives you chills, and the energy in the stadium is something that will always stick with me,” he added. “A lot of the Paralympic sports go hand in hand with (their) Olympic counterparts,

but a sport like Wheelchair Rugby isn’t like rugby,” he said. “If you’ve never seen Wheelchair Rugby it’s just amazing that the chairs look like something out of Mad Max and how aggressive

New Trier senior raises $28,000 for a great cause BY JAKE JARVI

he seeds for the High Prairie Foundation were planted when Eric Moerschel attended a Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY ) Leadership Seminar the summer after his sophomore year at New Trier High School. “They challenged us as students and people to make a difference in our communities,” says Moerschel, now a senior at New Trier. “They brought in a number of speakers and taught us how to lead people of different mindsets and different backgrounds and how to contribute meaningfully to a group; basically, how to be a good leader.” After an application process, only two students from New Trier get to attend the HOBY seminar each year. The seminar featured speakers such as authors, educators, politicians and business leaders to speak one-on-one with students interested in their fields. Moerschel spoke with the

investment-banking speaker and was inspired by the overall message of giving back to a community. With most of his fellow seminar attendees, volunteering their services to Chicago-area organizations, Moerschel wanted to think outside the box. He decided to do something for the community of Linton, North Dakota, where he and his family have been spending a portion of their summers over the last 10 years. “It’s a town with just over 1,000 people,” says Moerchel. “They’re all hard-working, downto-earth people. Some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.” The Linton Public School, a K-12 institution with an enrollment of just over 300 students, was his first choice. Moerschel met with the principal and some of the teachers and coaches to ask for a fundraiser wish list. After a little discussion, three projects were chosen. Ideally, they wanted to

replace the school’s scoreboards, the weight room, essentially a provide students with access to garage space that needed a new newer computers and refurbish floor and insulation so that

On his last visit to Linton Public School, Moreschel took a tour and saw the brand-new scoreboards and the 28 new Chromebook laptops. And the weight room improvements are scheduled to begin soon. “I’ve always been fascinated by business,” Moreschel says. “You see all these business people and one of their main missions is to be philanthropists. They want to be involved in charitable organizations. I think the industry of private equity is very interesting, not just the number crunching, but also meeting people and building relationships. students didn’t freeze in the winter and boil in the summer. Moreschel created a packet for soliciting donations, outlining the goals of the school and a plan for how to implement funds raised. Before he could send it out, however, he needed to set up a 501c3. “That was the most difficult process,” Moreschel says. “There was a lot of red tape, especially because we were soliciting to a different state. We couldn’t just set this up as an Illinois foundation or a North Dakota foundation. We had to file paperwork and tax returns in each of the states we solicited. That took about three months to set up.” When it came time to name his non-profit, he wanted a name that communicated the peaceful atmosphere of North Dakota — and the High Prairie Foundation was born. Within two weeks of sending out his fundraising packets to family friends and business

the community and students from high schools all over the North Shore. While the organization is primarily made up of students from Loyola and New Trier, there are also a few students from

smaller events, but its largest fundraiser is the dance marathon. Last year was the first time the group held the dance marathon, which raised a record-breaking $37,000 within the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. About 200 participants danced for six straight hours. At the top of each hour patients from Lurie Children’s Hospital shared inspiring stories about their experiences. “That shows everyone who is here what they are raising money for and how important it is,” Backer explained. A patient band also performed at the fundraiser last year, which was extremely popular and will return again this year. “They are so good,” Walker said. The teens have their sights on raising even more money this year — $63,000 — and hope to have around 300 participants. The money raised benefits patient and family services at the hospital. While the teens are passionate about raising money for Lurie

Children’s Hospital, they’ve also found the experience is rewarding in other ways too. Walker appreciates the connections she has made and the impact she can make as an individual. “I think you not only learn about the hospital but you are truly connecting to it,” she said. The organization is completely teen run, providing them the opportunity to learn business, marketing and operational skills. “It’s a really great way to test our leadership skills,” Lorenz said. Hearing the experiences of kids their age and younger who’ve suffered serious illnesses has been meaningful. Backer recalled shedding tears as she heard patients speak at last year’s dance-marathon. “This is real. These kids really need our help,” she said. Pizza lovers snap up fare at Ginger’s New owner adds spice to former Irish pub BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

hen Ginger’s opened in July at the Bridie McKenna site in Highwood, many people were surprised that the former Irish pub was taken over by a self-proclaimed “pizza anthropologist.” “I call myself a pizza anthropologist because I know enough to teach a college course about pizza,” said owner Jim Stoecker who has been making the same thin-crust pizza next door at Alex’s Washington Gardens since 2007. He purchased Alex’s from Alex Scornavacco, whose parents Tony and Ellen created the recipe for their popular restaurant, Scornavocco’s, in 1944. What’s it been like running back and forth between Ginger’s, which is at 254 Green Bay Road, and Alex’s Washington Gardens? Stoecker said it keeps him very busy, and he likes the convenience of having the restaurants next door to each other. The food supplies pass through both restaurants, so if one place is low on flour they can grab a bag from the other, but the food is cooked in separate kitchens. With many thin-crust pizza options to choose from, Stoecker said the Chicago Spicy Italian is a big hit with Italian beef, hot giardiniera, garlic and onion. “People really do like a good spicy pizza, and it’s one of our specialties,” he said. Stoecker said the pizza is basically the same at both restaurants, but Ginger’s will add a new thickcrust pizza, which has never been on the menu at Alex’s Washington Gardens. Stoecker worked with fellow “pizza guy” chef Billy Peplowski, to create a Sicilian deepdish pizza. “Ginger’s Sicilian deep dish pizza has a drier crust than a Chicago Style deep-dish pizza and is healthier than a deep-dish,” said Stoecker. “It has olive oil in the crust and it’s baked dry rather than Chicago deep-dish that is cooked either in Crisco or butter, and the dough is kind of fried which makes the crust very high in fat. That’s why after two pieces you have to go lay down.” Stoecker and Peplowski are

introducing the Sicilian deep- dish pizza, and at some point they would like Ginger’s to be a “destination pizza pub with several different types of crust.” In addition to his vast knowledge of pizza, Stoecker has put another feather in his paddy cap: “I decided if I’m going to have a pub, I also need to have really good French fries to build a menu around, so now I’m kind of a French fries anthropologist,” he said. “It’s potato selection, how

you prepare the potatoes, the oil you cook them in, and the seasoning. Billy makes our own seasoning now.” Stoecker researched French fries and many of the Top 10 Internet lists included ‘Candlestick Park French Fries’ or ‘Stadium Fries’ made famous at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. The fries are tossed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, parsley, and Parmesan and are baked in the oven. “I guess people used to go to

Candlestick Park just for the fries when the Giants were horrible,” he said. “I’m calling them Route 101 Fries, because Route 101 is the highway that goes the whole length of the West Coast, and it’s really the heart and soul of the West Coast.” Ginger’s also offers a selection of burgers, sandwiches and salads. Some of the items include: the Bacon & Tomato Burger, Teriyaki Ahi Tuna seasoned with blackening spice, served with avocado and wasabi teriyaki sauce, and the Caribbean Mango Salad with fancy greens, topped with tomato, fresh mozzarella, avocado, red onion, glazed walnuts, dried cranberries and mango topped with mango pineapple vinaigrette. “We’re trying to keep the menu simple and tight and make sure we get the food out hot and fresh,” said Stoecker. As a world traveler, Stoecker has been to Ireland many times, and one of the reasons he was drawn to Bridie McKenna’s is that it’s a “very authentic Dublin pub.” He explained that the builder

and former owner Fran Cara is from Dublin, and Bridie McKenna was named after his grandmother. Bridie McKenna’s officially opened on St. Patrick’s Day in 2008 and closed in 2014. Stoecker renamed the pub Ginger’s during Highwood’s Redhead Days last June when he was tossing around names with a friend who had an aunt named Ginger. He is also a “redhead anthropologist,” as he lured over 3,000 gingers from across the country for the event. Though Stoecker changed the name, he left the building virtually untouched and relished pointing out the charming details. Stoecker explained that in a big traditional Irish pub you walk into an entry area, and off to one side is a men’s bar where men would stand, drinking whiskey and telling stories. “My understanding is that bar stools were not even an innovation until the ‘50s, so men would stand while the ladies would sit in booths in a separate room that were called ‘snugs’ and drink their

Cherie or whatever and have polite conversation,” he said. “The other interesting thing about the ‘snugs’ is that is where parents would sit and negotiate dowries for their children to be married.” After the parents negotiated the dowries for “goats or chickens or cash” they would fill out a piece of paper and sign it. It would be filed at the pub almost as an official document,” he added. The restaurant also features a party room that can be used in conjunction with the patio. He said the room could accommodate a private party with about 125 guests or between 50 and 60 if everyone is seated at the same time. Ginger’s will host some upcoming events this October: My Best Friend’s Closet’s Fall Fashion Show to benefit The Bridge To Success, on October 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Bridge to Success is a charity that provides clothing for at- risk, low-income or no-income people to wear on job interviews. Tickets are being sold in advance, but you can also pay at the door, Stoecker added.

Everyone has an apron stashed somewhere to match June’s signature pearls. For gamers, Princess Peach Toadstool and Mario, from the Super Mario Brothers series of arcade games, would be fun. The princess looks to be wearing an old prom- or bridesmaid dress, alongside Mario’s signature overalls and cap. Personally, I’m eager to see the Cubs-fan-and-W-Flag pairing on the party circuit. It would be easy to turn a white summer tunic into a flag, but I think a ratty old white T-shirt would be more authentic, given all the wear and tear the victory flag has gotten this season. A little Scottish mist didn’t stop the 1,800 supporters of Lake Forest Open Lands from enjoying a fall afternoon in the Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve at the end of September. Bagpipes and Bonfire is a North Shore tradition for many, with the Searle-Burnett family having served as chairs for the afternoon. After the rain, Field Marshal John Dick coordinated the crowd-pleasing skydivers, sponsored by Coldwell Banker, which was followed by the bagpipe band march and the lighting of the brush bonfire by Peter and Marina Carney, with their grandson Chris Vernon and wife Erika.

avid Terrell had one of those “critic’s choice” performances against Providence Catholic. The speedy senior wideout, who has developed into one of the star attractions on Loyola Academy’s heralded football, caught a careerbest seven receptions in the 42-7 home win on Oct. 15. But how will his game play out … at home? His biggest critic — and biggest fan — is his dad, former Chicago Bears wide receiver David Terrell, a first-round draft pick in 2001 out of the University of Michigan. The two of them huddle together for a film session after every game. “He critiques me,” says Terrell. “It’s good criticism. He’s looking to make me a better player.” The current WR, No. 1 in your program, cherishes the one-onone coverage that he receives from the former WR. “Not a lot of [high school] players have the same opportunity that I have,” he notes. Terrell Sr. (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) finished his four-year NFL career with 128 receptions for 1,602 yards. Terrell Jr. (5-11, 175) has some catching up to do. He’s up to 25 catches for 469 yards with five touchdowns this fall after hauling in 30 passes for 315 yards with three TDs during LA’s 2015 state championship season. But do the mathematics. His yards-per-catch average is an eyecatching 18.8. “We’re always trying to get the ball to David. He’s got superior talent,” says LA offensive coordinator Tyler Vradenburg. “He’s just excellent at what he does. He’s a phenomenal athlete. “He’s still got some stuff to work out. But his ball skills are unmatched,” the LA play-caller adds. “He’s a ball hawk.” “David has been consistently excellent in all areas, and he’s solidified the outside receiver spot with Jake Marwede,” says LA head coach John Holecek. “He runs great routes. He’s fast enough to run by you, and he’s quick enough to get open [anywhere on the field].

t was a day in August, the start of varsity tryouts for New Trier’s boys golf team. Each of Trevians coach Pete Drevline’s previous three teams had finished runnerup at the Class 3A state tournament. He looked at the gathering of hopefuls, senior Justin Choi among them. Choi had played for NT state teams in 2015 and ’14. None of the others on that August day had made Drevline’s state series team in either year. “Justin,” Drevline said last weekend, “was the only one who had ever played [The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington].” The Den is the state tournament course. Choi and his state rookie teammates headed to the state course last weekend, having qualified as a team from the Loyola Academy Sectional in Glencoe on Oct. 10. NT placed third at the sectional. NT, six days earlier, had placed third at a regional. At state, on Oct. 15? Drevline’s driven bunch took runner-up honors to Hinsdale Central. HC shot 593, 25 shots better than NT’s total, for its fifth consecutive state championship. “A very exciting finish for us,” the coach said. “Our motto all year was, ‘Peak at the right time.’ We did that, in October, at state. We hit ‘reset’ after the sectional. We believed. We believed we could do as well as we did. “Hinsdale Central, that’s a powerhouse program,” Drevline added. “We finished ahead of other great teams, teams like Glenbrook South (tied for third place) and Loyola (fifth place). No sad faces on the way home.” New Trier’s boys put together a strong first round on Oct. 14, getting scores in the 70s from its top four. Choi paced the group with an even-par 72, followed by juniors Michael Tanaka (75) and Will Nummy (75) and freshman Daniel Tanaka (76). NT’s aggregate of 298 trailed Hinsdale Central’s 18-hole total by only seven strokes. “That was nice to see, our start,” Drevline said, adding many of his previous state teams hadn’t found their groove until the second day. A KRISS COUNTRY STANDOUT Vastly improved Highland Park senior thriving as team’s No. 1 runner BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

eronica Kriss and Kaitlyn Twadell are best buds. In fact, the two Highland Park High School cross country runners are “inseparable” according to their coach, Andy Butler. The buddy system certainly paid off for the HP duo in the Central Suburban League Championships at Glenbrook North on Oct. 15. Kriss drove to a third-place finish (18:23.68) in the North Division, while Twadell battled to a ninth-place showing (19:06.18). In fact, it paid off for the whole squad. The 1-2 punch of Kriss and Twadell helped the Giants to a second-place team finish (52 points) behind CSL North newcomer Vernon Hills (18). “I usually try to hang with her,” said Twadell. “I try to stay with her as long as I can.” Twadell has found the right buddy — and role model. Kriss has worked her way to the No. 1 position in the HP lineup. Work, by the way, is the operative word here. Butler loves the work ethic of his ace performer. “I’d have to say she’s the most improved runner that I’ve ever coached here,” said the HP coach. “As a freshman, she was running three miles around 23 or 24 minutes. “She’s just a kid who really wants it,” Butler added. “She’s tough. She’s gritty. Everything that she’s gotten, she’s earned. She’s really developed a passion for running.” Despite dealing with some troubling injuries, Kriss has moved to the front of the class. She runs with the leaders. “She’s medaled in every invite this year,” said Butler. “Right now, I think she’s a little frustrated. She knows that she can run faster than what she did today. “But she has a left shin injury, and that’s hampered some of her workouts,” the Giants coach added. “She hasn’t been able to do as much volume. Her mileage training is down. Her intervals are down.” But her spirit remains up. Way up. “I know that running is going to hurt,” said Kriss, who sustained

a couple of stress fractures in her left tibia earlier in her high school career. “But I do it anyway. Injuries come with the sport. “I’m totally devoted to running,” she added. Some of her toughness no doubt is gene-pool related. Her mother, Renata, is a marathon runner. Her dad, Doctor Steven Kriss, is a body builder. “I enter each race looking to go out well and pushing through,” said Kriss, who lived in Okinawa, Japan, prior to enrolling at HPHS four years ago. “The best part is always the finish line. And the cool-downs are pretty cool, too.”

Shortly after being interviewed, Kriss and Twadell, who, by the way, is nursing a right shin injury, went on a cool-down together. ’Cause that’s what best buds do. But before they left, Kriss had a prediction about Twadell. “She’s going to be faster than me next year.” Notable: The other runners helping HP’s cause were two upand-comers. Freshmen Stephanie Kriss (11th, 19:34.43) and Jillian Butler (12th, 19:37.02) picked up all-CSL North accolades (top 14), while senior Robin Israel was the team’s fifth runner (17th, 20:03.67).

Highland Park Boys Power in play. Highland Park came up with a dominating performance to take top honors in the CSL North Division last Saturday at GBN. Led by senior Jonathan Rosenfeld (2nd, 15:27.26), the Giants scored 28 points to easily beat rival Deerfield (55 points). All seven runners earned allleague recognition: junior Alec Glazier (4th, 15:40.06), junior Fitz Laurie (5th, 15:45.74), sophomore Jose Reyes (8th, 15:50.96), senior Charlie Skurie (9th, 15:55.34), senior Matthew Casey (10th, 15:55.68) and junior Nate Amster

(11th, 15:57.22). Lake Forest Girls Brett Chody and Emma Milburn did their thing. The two junior standouts came away with high finishes in the North Suburban Conference Championships at Adler Park in Libertyville on Oct. 15. Chody cruised the three-mile course in 18:19.0 to take runner-up honors. She just missed beating Libertyville junior Melissa Manetsch (18:18.20). Milburn raced to a sixth-place finish in 19:12.80. The Scouts, who took third place

(74 points) behind Stevenson (36) and the host Wildcats (58), also received solid showings from sophomore Courtney Schmidt (16th, 20:16.40), senior Haley Click (23rd, 20:31.80) and junior Erika Marchant (28th, 20:50.70). Lake Forest Boys Etienne Najman came up with a top-15 effort in the NSC Championship Meet at Adler Park on Oct. 15. The LF senior ran the three miles in 16:21.80. Lake Forest tallied 196 points to finish seventh in the team standings. Junior Cameron Redding placed 47th in 17:40.

point in a tennis match involving Lake Forest High School junior Julianna Roman and her doubles partner, freshman Nika Belova, ends. A man among a throng of spectators applauds, his oversized, silver ID bracelet hula-hooping around his left wrist with each clap. The man’s name is Radu, a native of Romania and Roman’s father. His daughter and her partner might have won the point. His daughter and her partner might have lost the point. Radu is either applauding a nice shot or encouraging the pair to stay positive before the start of the next point. “You have to enjoy this sport,” Radu, a lifelong tennis player, says. “It’s a sport you can play and enjoy after high school, after college.” Julianna Roman’s on-court intensity is impossible to miss. Her Match Face is all business at all times. The 5-foot-5 Scout hits hard groundstrokes and harder serves, moves her feet well at the baseline and at the net, loves to compete. Yes, she is hard on herself after an unforced error or a near winner, but only because she cares deeply about winning and helping her team. And yes, her father would like her to emit a hint of sunshine in between points now and then. “I don’t want anybody to think I’m having fun, though I do enjoy playing when I’m out there,” Roman, a netter since the age of eight, admits, a smile emerging in the middle of her admission. Her super-serious veneer cracked for a couple of seconds during the second set of Roman/ Belova’s Class 2A Lakes Sectional doubles championship match against a pair from Libertyville High School on Oct. 15. Two courts down, her teammate, junior Emily Gorczynski, was playing Scouts freshman Alex Slomba in the singles match for third place. Roman, during a break in the action, looked at Gorczynski and gave her a thumbs-up. Roman then turned and got all focused again, ready to battle some more with Belova. “Julianna,” Lake Forest coach

The three-day state meet was scheduled to start on Oct. 20. … Belova blasted several down-theline forehand winners throughout the two-day sectional last weekend, one coming in the final game of the doubles championship match. Belova/Roman saved two match points when they were down 5-3. … Roman, on junior Teresa Fawcett’s play when Fawcett filled in for Roman at No. 1 doubles at the NSC Meet earlier this month and combined with Belova to finish third in their flight: “Teresa stepped up, played well. She went out there and played her best tennis. Very consistent.”

Denise Murphy says, “is a very determined player, and she’s stronger this year, mentally and physically. Her doubles game has developed. She’s seeing things better, anticipating better. She’s more patient with herself. “She is,” the coach adds, “competitive, no doubt. She likes to get locked in.” A state doubles qualifier a year ago (with Brynn Carlson, a 2016 graduate), Roman, a righty, had to miss some matches this fall to rest a stress reaction in her right wrist. Junior Teresa Fawcett, a No. 3 doubles player, filled in admirably for Roman at the North Suburban Conference Meet, joining forces with Belova to place third at No. 1 doubles on Oct. 8. “Julianna is confident in her strokes,” Fawcett says. “Her serve … it’s great. She’s really fast, a good team player, always giving tips to her teammates during

practice. She’s very positive and inclusive.” Roman was born in Michigan and lived in Ann Arbor for eight years before moving to Illinois. Her father and mother, Doina, also Romanian, are Ohio State University fans. Buckeyes living in Wolverines territory is akin to Hatfields mingling with McCoys. The Romans survived. “One of our neighbors when we lived in Michigan, still a good friend, was a wrestler at the University of Michigan,” Radu says. “We’d banter a lot.” Radu introduced tennis to Julianna, who loved the sport, stuck with it and started powering shots past her father at the age of 14. Julianna took tennis lessons at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff and now works with Argentina native Javier Llanes, a sports trainer and tennis pro at 360 Athlete in Glenview. “Tennis has taught me a ton

of lessons,” Roman, an ace student when she isn’t cracking aces, says. “It has taught me honesty, hard work and the importance of working together with a doubles partner. [ Javier] is really intense. He pushes me, encourages me to do my best. He believes in me.” She has dabbled in arts and crafts. One of her first creations, years ago, was a necklace. She had made charms from clay and attached them to necklace. Her father’s silver ID bracelet? There’s a story there, an international story, one with mystery and intrigue. The bracelet was a birthday gift for Radu from his mother. His mother had mailed it from Romania to a woman in Ohio and asked her to deliver it to Radu 23 years ago. The woman and Radu met in Cleveland. Radu received the gift. The woman’s name? Doina. Radu and Doina got married

one and a half years later. “I don’t know how my mother knew Doina,” a smiling Radu says. Notable: Lake Forest High School’s girls tennis team won the Class 2A Lakes Sectional last week and advanced all four of its entrants to this weekend’s state meet at Buffalo Grove High School and other sites. LFHS amassed 28 points to runner-up Warren Township High School’s 22. Scouts junior Julianna Belova and freshman Nika Belova netted runner-up honors in doubles, bowing 6-1, 6-3 to Libertyville seniors Danielle Blaser and Callie Klein; Scouts sophomore Emily Asmussen and freshman Salma Alsikafi topped a Warren tandem 6-2, 6-2 in the doubles match for third place; and LFHS freshman Alex Slomba defeated junior teammate Emily Gorczynski 6-2, 3-0 (injury default) in the match

arren Blood, who is known for turning it up a notch as the season winds down, was in contention for top honors. The New Trier senior cross country runner ran a sub-15 on the three-mile layout at Glenbrook North High School on Oct. 15. But his time of 14:57.03 wasn’t enough to take first place in the South Division of the Central Suburban League Championships. Maine South senior Reese Jordan won the race in 14:49.60. “I went out and hung with Reese as long as I could,” said Blood. He just couldn’t close the deal. Jordan pulled away at the 2.5mile mark. Blood, however, definitely is on schedule to do some damage in future meets. He’s primed and ready for the state series. “I generally run my best at the end of the season,” said Blood, who took third in the CSL South Division a year ago before placing 48th at the state meet (15:05) in Peoria. “He understands the process,” said NT head coach David Wismer. “Reese is very good. This race had three of the best runners in state,” added Wismer, including Niles North’s Conor Perreault (3rd, 15:04.20) in that mix. Blood is no stranger to the sub-15. At the Palatine Invite on Sept. 24, he took 10th in a tough field with a 14:55.9 clocking. “But it is pretty special to break 15:00 at the conference meet,” he said. Blood has learned to embrace the longer races. “He’s always been better on the track,” said Wismer. “But I think he’s proven that he’s a pretty good cross country runner, as well.” Blood had a strong ending to last spring’s track season. He qualified to state in the 3200 meters by running a 9:14.07 at the Loyola Sectional. A week later, he earned a state medal (7th place, 9:19.90) in Charleston. Running fits Blood’s “lifestyle”.

“I found out that I wasn’t very good at other sports, like wrestling and soccer,” he said “But I love going out for long runs. It refreshes your mind. It clears your head after a long day at school.” With Blood leading the way, the Trevians took second in the team standings (50 points) behind Maine South (35). Four of Blood’s teammates earned all-CSL South status: senior Cooper Woolford (10th, 15:32.52), senior Matt Burke (11th, 15:33.22), junior Kiran Baakkonen (13th, 15:38.31) and junior Pat Norrick (14th, 15:39.27). Senior Matt Roge just missed all-division honors: 15th,

15:43.99. “You never want lose, but Maine South is a very good team,” said Wisner. “We’re getting better. And that’s important. “We still have a long way to go, but I’m feeling a little better about this team,” the coach added. “We could be a top-10 team at state.” New Trier Girls Five New Trier competitors claimed all-CSL South honors in last Saturday’s meet at Glenbrook North. Senior Caroline Fix led the way by taking third (17:43.47)

Loyola Academy Boys Paolo Tiongson turned in the top performance in the Chicago Catholic League Championships. On Oct. 15, the Loyola senior covered the three-mile course in Romeoville in 15:02.90. He beat the runner-up, Marmion Academy’s Michael Ronzone, by more than two seconds. The Ramblers, who finished third in the team standings (69 points) behind Marmion (45) and St. Ignatius (54), also received strong outings from senior Connor Hoag (7th, 15:30.0) and sophomore Jack Lynch (17th, 16:00.5). The team other scorers were

On the magical third play of the game, the talented — and extemporaneous — New Trier quarterback pulled a pink rabbit out his helmet on “Breast Cancer Awareness Night”. Clad in pink tube socks and avoiding a couple of sack attempts while running east to west rather than north and south, Czyzynski threw up an “Aaron Rodgers”. Hail Mary became Hail Max. His pass landed into the sure hands of tight end Max Rosenthal, who dodged a bevy of Glenbrook South defenders and turned a prayer of a pass into a 75-yard touchdown. New Trier (6-2, 4-0) went on to beat the visiting Titans 38-28 to clinch its first Central Suburban League South Division in 15 years. “I had nowhere else to run,” said Czyzynski. “I just threw it my hardest. ing it and taking it to the house,” he added. “I saw him the whole way. It’s hard not to see the Big Dog. I thought after catching it that he might take a big hit. [Instead] he turns it into a touchdown. I thought, ‘Whoa.’ ” “That’s not exactly how we drew it up,” admitted Rosenthal (6-foot-3, 235 pounds), who is especially tough to bring down when he’s cranking up the speed and crisscrossing his way down the field. “After I caught it, I saw some daylight. It was a great feeling to score.” New Trier coach Brian Doll, who has cooked up a pretty creative playbook, is used to Czyzynski’s drop-the-mic moments. “He kind of ad-libs as he goes,” said Doll. “We don’t draw up a lot of those plays. But we do spend a lot of time in practice on scramble situations.” Czyzynski — with all those Zs and Ys in his last name — must love puzzles. Must love games of scramble. “We got Scramble Rules. It

starts with if you see a guy coming at you, you run away from him and get to an open area,” said the QB, who also avoided a sack on a mad scramble on NT’s second series. Czyzynski, a three-year starter behind center, had to be the Offensive Player of the Game. He finished the night with 102 yards on the ground and 222 yards in the air. He had TD runs — quarterback keepers — of 50 and 13 yards. In this presidential year, Czyzynski has to be the frontrunner for CSL South Player of the Year, right? “I think he’s had 300 or more combined yards four weeks in a row,” said Doll. “If he’s not the conference’s Player of the Year, then … ” His biggest challenge for those honors just might come from a teammate: Francis Fay. In the win over GBS, the senior had another banner night: 148 rushing yards on offense, seven tackles on defense. Fay has to be the league’s best two-way player.

hey ran out to the home football field like they always do for the pregame session, only this time each Highland Park High School football player was wearing a pink jersey. It was an unusual hue for a gladiator sport, bright and pleasant. It also made perfect sense. It was Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 14, the date Highland Park’s Giants hosted Maine East’s Blue Demons. “I like them,” Giants senior defensive end Nick Siegel, a 6-foot, 200-pounder, said of the threads, following HP’s 55-12 victory. “At the end there, I noticed some blood on some jerseys. That made the pink a little darker, a little more intimidating.” Blood, sweat and fearsome efforts from HP gridders decided the Central Suburban League

North clash early, HP owning a 35-6 lead at the half and scoring a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Siegel savored every second of the win, because at this time last fall he was a spectator along the Giants’ sideline, too banged up (left shoulder injury) to suit up for action. His 2015 season ended early, in Week Three. The team won three of nine games. “An extremely emotional season, a lot of highs and lows,” Siegel recalled. “I took the losses hard, probably harder than my teammates did because I couldn’t be out there with them. I had to accept the injury.” Siegel’s current team is sitting 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the CSL North, tied with Glenbrook North and Vernon Hills High School for first place in the division. The Giants clinched a

playoff berth last weekend. HP’s next opponent, in the final week of the regular season on Oct. 21? Vernon Hills. “Our team, it has the greatest bond, great team chemistry,” Siegel said. “Seniors, juniors, sophomores … we’re all close.” Such camaraderie was evident against Maine East (1-7, 0-4), particularly when Maine East had the ball. Rushing attempts were met by a sea of pink, a wall, at the line of scrimmage more times than not. Most times it was impossible to figure out which Giant had made the initial hit on a tackle. As the pile of gang tacklers disentangled after practically every running play, there was Siegel, in the middle of it all, marching back to the huddle, hungry for the start of another down.

“Energy guy,” Giants football coach Joe Horeni said. “Nick is the guy, if we mess up on a play, who is the first to say, ‘Next play, next play.’ ” Siegel’s teammates have been paying attention to Siegel’s perpetual verve, impossible to miss. He broke through for a late sack in a 14-0 defeat of Deerfield High School on Sept. 30. He fell on a fumble, in an end zone, a week later in a victory at Maine West, a pounce worth six points in a 35-14 victory. “Aggressive and relentless, nonstop,” HP sophomore linebacker/running back Giancarlo Volpentesta said of Siegel. “He gives it his all, at all times. The way he plays is contagious.” Volpentesta, back in August, thought he’d play on an underlevel football squad this fall. The brother of two-time All-CSL

North selection and University of Wisconsin freshman defensive back Cristian Volpentesta must have underestimated his abilities. Giancarlo — “GC” to those closest to him — made the varsity and made an impact on varsity. Immediately. He picked off a pass and recorded a sack in the Giants’ season-opening win over Hersey. Against Maine East last weekend, he returned a fumble 43 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, caught a 17-yard touchdown pass, recovered a Highland Park onside kick in the second quarter, nearly recovered another one in the same quarter and finished with two receptions for 30 yards. He is one of three sophomore starters on varsity, along with linebacker/offensive lineman Tommy Motzko and lineman Kevin Kaufman. “It’s been good preparation,

this season, for the three of us,” Volpentesta said. “We’re going to know what to expect during the next two seasons, and we all know what it’s like to be a part of one big family, all going for the same goal (capturing at least a share of the CSL North championship).” They’ll have to top Vernon Hills, also 6-2 overall, to achieve that aim. Two Highland Park varsity coaches have ties to Vernon Hills’ football program: First-year offensive coordinator Jason Newburger quarterbacked Cougars teams and also played basketball and baseball at VHHS; his high school varsity football coach was Tony Monken, now one of Horeni’s assistants. Monken served as the school’s first varsity football coach, going 77-55 from 2000-2012. Nine of his 13 teams qualified for the state playoffs.

CITY FLICKER Payne set to take her playmaking skills to the bright lights of the Big Apple BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

race Payne was in the city of Chicago, miles and miles away from her hometown of Lake Forest on a balmy fall day in September. Chicago … Lake Forest. Jolly Green Giant … ant. Sturdy … charming. But Payne, a Lake Forest High School senior field hockey player, was in her element in the 60614 ZIP code, comfortable and captivated, before the start of a road game against Francis W. Parker School. The nearby skyscrapers did not intimidate her. The soundtrack of the broad-shouldered city — honking cars, the screeches of a truck’s bad brakes, somebody whistling to hail a cab — agreed with her. “We were walking together before the game, and Grace said to me, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to live in a big city like this?’ ” Scouts senior Faith Fietsam, a midfielder like Payne, recalls. “Grace likes the lifestyle of a big city, the atmosphere, everything about it.” Payne had headed east to visit a college many months earlier. She was interested in playing field hockey for the college. The college’s field hockey coaches were interested in Payne’s field hockey skills. The college? Columbia University, located in New York City, Chicago’s big U.S. sibling. She fell for it in a New York minute, or maybe faster than that. “It’s a beautiful campus, and I love the city,” says the 5-foot-9 Payne, a third-year varsity player who verbally committed to the Ivy League school last April. “The coaches care deeply about the program. I rode on the team bus with the players. The bus took us to the fields, about 100 blocks from the school. There’s something about a big city, all of the restaurants, all of the things you can do in one. It would be great to work in one someday.” Her current job for the Scouts’ field hockey team, starting right midfielder, does not pay her much ($0 to be exact). Payne’s versatility made life difficult for her boss, LFHS coach Melanie Walsh, at the beginning of the season. Where to put Payne? In the midfield? At forward? On defense? She is capable of playing anywhere. Capable of playing well anywhere. “Grace found a home at right

midfield, where she’s making a daily impact,” Walsh says, adding Payne’s reliable presence in the midfield hadn’t atrophied her offensive or her defensive abilities for a squad ranked 17th in the country by an online preps site in late September. “She is great,” the coach continues, “at stuffing opponents along the sideline and then feeding the ball to the forwards. Grace is also an important part of our offensive penalty-corner unit.” From her slot on that corps, Payne struck for a team-high four goals and distributed a pair of assists in a stretch of three games from Sept. 21-26. The Scouts won 7-0, won 6-0, won 9-0. Relentlessness, cubed. Payne got her start in field hockey at New Vision Athletics in Lake Bluff. She was a third-grader, maybe a fourth-grader. The

sport’s competitiveness attracted her to it, immediately. Her vision and aggressiveness, her feel for the game, her adept passes put her on a path to club field hockey. Windy City Field Hockey fielded club teams with Payne on them. Lake Forest High School defeated New Trier in the state championship field hockey game in 2013. Payne was there, on the Scouts’ home field — as a ball girl. She played for the Scouts’ state runner-up team in ’14 and for a state semifinalist last fall. LFHS edged reigning state champion New Trier 3-2 in overtime, in late August, and reigning state runnerup Glenbard West 1-0 18 days later. “Those wins and how we did in St. Louis [co-champions of the Gateway Tournament] were big confidence boosts for us,” Payne, also an avid runner and a squash

and intramural basketball enthusiast, says. “Our offense is strong, really strong, and we’re doing well in transition.” Payne and Fietsam are intramural basketball teammates. Payne is a three-point specialist, Fietsam a point guard. Payne is also the team’s self-appointed general manager/coach/marketing specialist/trainer/motivator. The team plays once a week and practices on Sundays during the winter season. “It’s a casual league, but don’t tell that to Grace,” Fietsam says. “She might take basketball as seriously as she takes field hockey, and that’s saying something. She runs our team. She brings intensity to the court at all times.” There’s a hilarious side to Payne, too. Quiet at first to those who encounter her for the first time, she eventually reveals a sense of

humor that is part sarcastic, part deadpan, part delightful. Get to know her for a few minutes and prepare to laugh. “Grace doesn’t take everything seriously, and that’s one of her best qualities,” Fietsam says. “She loves to joke around, keep things light. Honestly, she is one of the funniest people I know.” Looking for Payne, but you can’t find her? She’s either on a road or in a forest preserve. Running. It’s her favorite pastime, and it’s her favorite activity to pass the time. “Running to Grace is like yoga to others; it’s where she finds her zen,” Walsh says. “If she weren’t so good at field hockey, she would certainly be an accomplished runner. She has been known to play an entire field hockey game and then go and win a local 5K.” She runs for miles and miles in

a game. She runs for kilometers and kilometers in a race. A city girl’s pace. Notable: The Scouts wrapped up their regular season with a commanding 6-0 win over visiting Deerfield on Oct. 14 to improve their overall record to 15-1. Lauren Abbatista opened the scoring with back-to-back goals with assists from Paige LeClercq and Maddie Stephenson. Greta Kullby scored next with an assist from Stephenson and Cat Nicholson. Grace Payne then scored on a perfect aerial shot that sailed over the goalie’s head to put LF up by five. Lissa Davis finished off the Warriors with the lone goal of the second half on an assist from Abby Kocourek. Hannah Metzger earned the shutout with two saves to give the Scouts their 13th shutout of the season.

fruit and a cup of coffee sitting before her at Walker Bros Original Pancake House in Highland Park. “Loved ones and friends and students want to get something for the teacher, something special and meaningful, but they don’t know exactly what the teacher needs. Thriveosity is an

outgrowth of what I do as a clinical psychologist working with cancer patients. We want the recipient of the boxes to feel as normal as possible; patients feel isolated at times, and they don’t want to feel the products they’re receiving are strictly medical.” Trivedi-Purohit was born in India. Eighteen months later, she and her mother, Nita, arrived in the United States to join husband/father Devendra, an Air Force physician. The family lived in Atlantic City from 1976-80; lived in Montgomer y, Alabama, for seven years; moved to England and lived there for three years; called O’Fallon, Illinois, home for a spell; moved to San Antonio (Ritu’s junior year in high school); and then returned to O’Fallon. Her parents now live in Peoria. “We moved around so much; the family unit was my primary social unit,” says Trivedi-Purohit, who earned her master’s degree in community counseling from Loyola University in Chicago and her doctorate from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. “We relied on one another. My parents were major influences, stressing the importance of education and honesty,

thinking beyond yourself, connecting with others.” Ritu and Paresh, Northbrook residents since 2010, have two daughters, 13-year-old Surina and eight-year-old Annika. “Surina,” Ritu says, “is like me, focused and determined, and she’s a swimmer. Annika is my actress, my dancer, my gymnast. She likes the spotlight. She’s getting ready for a play audition [in early September]. She’s excited about the audition.” Movies stir Ritu, especially suspense-laden ones and ones that make her think. She enjoys getting wrapped up in flicks like Shutter Island and The Game. A good story told by a filmmaker, featuring strong character development, pulls her to the box office. Trivedi-Purohit eats a strawberry.
