Family gift jumpstarts LFC campaign New science facility named for Lillard family

ake Forest College kicked off a record $125 million capital campaign on Oct. 7, including a $43 million science center designed to remain relevant beyond the middle of the 21st century. Construction began this summer on the 130,000-square-foot facility, which will include a large addition to the existing building and two newly constructed wings, according to college President Stephen D. Schutt. The addition will be finished in December 2017, and the renovations are scheduled

ilmette native Courtney White is well aware of the difficulties that arise when a family member has cancer. Before she lost her father to lung cancer in 2006 when she was a senior at New Trier Township High School, her family struggled to keep up with everyday life and relied on friends and neighbors for home-cooked meals. When White returned to Chicago after gradating from college, she sought ways to give back to people battling cancer. “I wanted to give families the same support my family had,” she told DailyNorthShore.com. As White looked for volunteer roles throughout Chicago, she was surprised to find that nothing existed to provide families assistance with meals. “What are people doing?” she

We had the privilege of working with Cory for selling our property and brokering our deal on our new property. Right from the start he was very professional and extremely prepared. It was apparent he did his prework regarding the comps in our neighborhood. We went in with an asking price higher then I thought was possible and had offers within 24 hours. He was very approachable and extremely helpful during our whole process. He did everything from working the offer to coordinating various inspections. When done, he gave us a bottle of Champagne and a bottle of sparkling lemonade to celebrate our new house with the kids. Use Cory, you will not be disappointed.” - KRIS & ERICA BEALL

Do You Need A Travel Companion? BY CONTRIBUTOR

I

t’s said that youth is wasted on the young, but fortunately travel need not end with the evolution of years. If you still have the passion for travel but lack the physical prowess to handle it by yourself, you may want to hire a travel companion. A companion adds an extra layer of support, manages the logistics and absorbs the hassles of traveling, allowing you focus on the quality of the experience and enjoy the journey -whether you’re with your family, at a wedding or graduation, with friends or on your own. “Aging well is about engaging support. Physical limitations don’t require you to retreat from your lifestyle. That’s really what travel companions represent,” said Sam Cross with Broad Street, a high-end boutique North Shore home care agency that also helps coordinate senior travel and travel companions. “Like personal assistants, they fill in the gaps and enable independence so you can live and travel well. Furthermore,

if you have a condition that requires more attention, a travel companion with skilled nursing* qualifications can be arranged.” "Family weddings can be a stress-free pleasure when a travel companion makes the arrangements." Imagine going through the airport with everything taken care of, from luggage to tickets. At

your destination, your reservation for dinner is all set and your ride to the restaurant has been scheduled. Did you decide to change plans and take a day trip to Versailles instead of having lunch at the Eiffel Tower? No problem. Companions remove the intimidation of travel by putting all the details together. “I know that just thinking

about planning a trip can be overwhelming. There are so many moving parts to be considered, from the larger decision of where to visit, to the smallest detail of what special equipment might be needed in a room,” said Terri Netzel with Lake Shore Travel, a luxury leisure travel advisor for over 15 years. “Do you want to visit Egypt and see the pyramids

but are in a wheelchair? That can be arranged.” But when clients think about flying these days with all of the restrictions and regulations, she said they sometimes think it’s not worth the hassle. It doesn’t have to be that way, with the right assistance in planning along with the support on the ground once you’re there.

“It’s part of a larger philosophy not to drive the client’s decisions but rather to provide comprehensive support to allow people to live the life that they choose,” said Cross of Broad Street Home Care. “We extend this philosophy to all parts of our services. It’s about living well within the paradigm of aging.” As the world gets smaller with improved technology, transportation and other resources, travel opportunities that were once outside of reach have now become possible. With the proper assistance, the question is not how to travel, but where do you want to go and what do you want to do? This story is sponsored by Broad Street Home Care, a boutique agency that, in addition to travel companions, provides premium, customized home care service to seniors who want to remain healthy and independent in their homes. For now, Culinary Care delivers about 140 meals every month, and has served nearly 300 patients in 2016 alone. “Food is so important but it is kind of the last thing you think about when you are going through this,” White said. The organization’s slogan is “delivering one less worry.” By delivering food to needy patients, Culinary Care aims to take away that stress and also provide proper nutrition so patients can focus on getting better. “We make sure everyone is nourished,” White said. Culinary Care is funded entirely through donations and

fundraising events. While the organization has grown tremendously over the three-and-a-half years since its inception, White wants to reach more patients and add hospitals to the network. On Oct. 15, Culinary Care is holding its 2nd annual Corporate Cook-off at Kendall College in Chicago. Local chefs prepare recipes that are appropriate for cancer patients, such recipes that are low sodium, high calorie/ protein or light with few spices. At the event, the chefs lead a team of corporate sponsored participants who work to prepare those recipes. Similar to the popular cooking

show Chopped, in a separate area guests will enjoy cocktails and food from the winning recipes in the previous year, while watching the challenge live on TV. Each of the prepared meals will be evaluated by a tasting panel, which will decide who is the ultimate winner of the contest. Culinary Care hopes to raise $100,000 at the event. Lake County Democrats endorse write-in for coroner BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

I

n an unprecedented move, the Lake County Democratic Central Committee endorsed write-in candidate physician Thomas Rudd of Lake Forest in the Nov. 8 general election over the party’s designated nominee, Michael P. Donnenwirth of Waukegan. The Democrats unanimously backed Rudd’s write-in effort with a voice vote during an official meeting of the central committee Oct. 5 in Gurnee, claiming he is the actual Democrat in the race. “There is only one true Democrat running for this office,” said state Sen. Terry Link (D-Waukegan), the chairman of the Lake County Democrats. “I don’t care what the title (on the ballot) says there is only one Democrat.” Link said he couldn’t remember a time when the central committee has endorsed a write-in or any other candidate over its primary nominee. He has chaired the party in Lake County since 1992. Rudd was elected as a Democrat in 2012 but said he withdrew his name from consideration as the party’s candidate in the March primary because of problems with his nominating petitions. He sought to run as an independent, Donnenwirth challenged that effort and the courts sided with Donnenwirth. “I blew it when I ran in the primary and I admit it,” Rudd said while addressing more than 80 people at the meeting. Donnenwirth said he was surprised by the endorsement both because he feels he is better

Dr. Thomas Rudd

qualified and Rudd displayed poor ethical judgment when he said he attested to people signing his primary petitions when he was not the circulator. “It’s unbelievable because Rudd is just not the man for the job,” Donnenwirth said in a DailyNorthShore.Com telephone interview after the meeting. “This is a law enforcement position and he is overqualified.” Responding to Link’s claim he is not a true Democrat, Donnenwirth said he votes Democrat most of the time. He ran for a Lake County Board seat as a Republican in 2008 challenging Democrat Bob Sabonjian and losing. But he said his reasons were practical. “I decided to challenge Bob Sabonjian and I thought it would be easier to do as a Republican,” said Donnenwirth. Both Rudd and Donnenwirth are competing with Dr. Howard Cooper of Bannockburn, the Republican nominee for the job of coroner. Mark Shaw, the chairman of the Lake County Republican Central Committee, was also critical of Rudd’s peti-

tion handling and effort to get on the ballot as an independent. “Obviously, I would prefer not to get in the middle of the Democrats' civil war, but it greatly disturbs me that Tom Rudd takes a very cavalier attitude toward making sworn statements under oath, then reverses himself on numerous occasions when it is convenient for him,” Shaw said in a statement. The statement was a response to a DNS request for a comment from the Cooper campaign. Shaw said Cooper, a dentist, wants to bring operational stability, fiscal responsibility, integrity and youth-focused death prevention education programs to the coroner’s office. Rudd said he recognized the challenge of running a successful write-in campaign and is thankful for the help the endorsement will mean to his effort. “I’m extremely pleased to receive the endorsement of the Democratic Party,” said Rudd. “You have to write me in and that’s not easy,” he added during his comments to the audience.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

Tradition runs deep at The Silo BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

any restaurants add items to their menus to reinvent themselves. The Silo restaurant in Lake Bluff adds its own twist to change. While diversifying over the past 48 years, The Silo has not lost sight of the deep-dish pan pizza that thrust it into popularity along the North Shore in 1968. The restaurant has added specialty pies to its menu as well as other choices. “We’ll always be adding new and different pizzas to the menu,” said Dave Tarman, the latest link in a family chain that has owned the eatery since 1988. “We build off the old ideas.” When Gene Bergmark and Carl Skogland started building the restaurant in 1967, they introduced deep-dish pizza to the North Shore, according to Tarman. Bergmark and his wife, Carol Bergmark, operated the business until 1988. Tarman said his parents, Pat Tarman and Larry Tarman, partnered with his sister, Sandy Tarman Pike, and her husband, Larry Pike, to buy the restaurant from Bergmark in 1988. Then changes started to happen. “My sister is very creative,” Dave Tarman said. “She really changed the original pan pizzas and they caught on. “She added the Reuben pizza, Buffalo chicken and roasted eggplant. We had four cheese macaroni and bacon a long time ago before it was popular.” The senior Tarmans and Pikes made other changes too. The first thing they did was close the restaurant and renovate.

Some things drop off the menu and others are added. When longtime customers arrive and ask for something unusual it may surprise Dave Tarman but not the kitchen staff. “I’ve never heard of it but our cooks have been here so long they say ‘no problem’ and they make it,” Dave Tarman said. Approximately half the people who order pizza — there are thin crust as well as deep dish — pick one off the menu and the others build their own from dozens of ingredients available. “They might order one with artichoke hearts, spinach soufflé and fresh sliced tomatoes,” Dave Tarman said. of fun to wear. A way to say that you don’t take time seriously. So why are you keeping it in the dark? You muse about this... On the night when you bought that watch, you were at a Disney hotel. Hours later, a news-making event happened there that broke everyone’s Mickey Mouse

innocence. The moment is coming back: hovering helicopters and the noise they made. Guests talking in solemn groups. Disney staffers looking un-Disney grim. The manmade lake there, that everyone assumed to have been a child-safe place of play was

instead revealed to be something seriously uncertain in the blazing white of a chopper’s searchlight. You don’t like to think about such uncertainty. So, now you understand. To the disappointment of both you and Mickey, he is no longer the simple, fun symbol of carefree

childhood or bemused adulthood. For you, he now carries a little extra baggage. There’s nothing you can do, except try not to be reminded of it every time you look at your wrist. So you gently shut the junk drawer. It’s time to get on with the day.

SOCIALS THE 2016 COOKS’ TOUR Photos by Larry Miller

Co-chairs Nancy Doyle and Gigi Johnson, both of Winnetka, took on the large task of the 2016 Cooks’ Tour, celebrating another successful year raising funds for Rush University Medical Center. Five homes in Winnetka and Wilmette opened their doors to friends and supporters during the early fall day. Many gathered at the Community House in Winnetka after the tours, enjoying food from The Noodle in Wilmette, with desserts by Grand Foods in Winnetka. The $75,000 raised will go toward Rush’s new Road Home Program, which is a center for veterans and their families. The Wounded Warrior Project also made a matching contribution of $2 for every dollar raised. nscookstour.org

OH BABY! Fay, Trevians snap Maine South’s 16-year, 77-game CSL South win streak BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

F

rancis Fay ripped the New Trier football helmet off his head and immediately hit the turf at Maine South. The senior running back/defensive back, his chest heaving, looked at the night sky and started to cry. Happy teardrops rolled off his face. Fay stayed flat on his back for a good 30 seconds, basking in the early moments of a momentous victory on Oct. 7. New Trier 27, Maine South 21. “I’ve been crying nonstop,” Fay would say some 10 minutes later. “Pure joy … that’s what I’ve been experiencing.” He had a superb excuse for displaying such emotion. Maine South hadn’t lost a Central Suburban League South game in 16 years. Sixteen years. Baby is born. Baby grows up, smiles for a driver’slicense photo. Maine South went 77-0 in that span, capturing four state championships along the way. “It started with a mentality,” Fay said of the week of practices before the meeting of 4-2 teams (2-0 in the CSL South) in Park Ridge. “We had to expect to win. We took that mindset into the game. That mindset, added to how we played physically tonight, we had a lot of going for us. We never stopped believing we would win.” Sixteen years ago … “I was probably on my mom’s [ Jackie’s] lap, watching an Ohio State football game,” said New Trier senior quarterback Clay Czyzynski, son of former OSU football player Rich Czyzynski. Sixteen years ago … “I was an assistant sophomore football coach at New Trier, working with quarterbacks,” New Trier’s third-year head varsity coach, Brian Doll (NT, ’95), said a year after his Trevs fell 24-21 to South’s Hawks. Maine South senior quarterback Nick Leongas completed a 14-yard pass to senior wideout Matt Holbrook on the game’s first play from scrimmage. The Hawks (4-3, 2-1) relied on nothing but running plays from there, gaining 61 yards on seven snaps, the final 23 coming on a Leongas touchdown sprint.

do to get a win like this. “I’ve never been happier than I am right now.” Fay popped off the turf, talked to scribblers and well-wishers and ran to a set of bleachers, hopping atop a partition to either hug or high-five several ecstatic NT fans. He then returned to the field to join his teammates and coaches for the postgame huddle. His eyes were still moist. So were others’. “The New Trier community,” a proud Doll would say later, “is going to remember this win for quite a while.” Notable: Trevians football coach Brian Doll was a wideout/defensive back for New Trier teams in the mid-1990s. NT defeated Maine South in his senior season, 1994. … New Trier senior fullback/linebacker Jake Lowell suffered what appeared to be a broken finger in the first half of the New Trier-Maine South game on Oct. 7. He got it taped up and returned to the field but came out for good after aggravating it. “I’ll wear a club [protective cast] next week [vs. visiting Glenbrook South, on Oct. 14],” Lowell said. “I’ll play.” … NT’s 27-21 win at Maine South last weekend left it all alone in first place in the CSL South standings. Maine South and Evanston are 2-1 in the division. … Trevians senior linebacker FRAN-TASTIC: New Trier running back Francis Fay breaks free during his team’s win over Maine South. DOUBLING UP Highland Park tennis team receiving plenty of production from Michael twins BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

I

n August, about the only thing freshman twins Halle Michael and Samara Michael had in common — other than their surname and birthday — was a goal. Make the Highland Park High School girls varsity tennis team. Halle made it. So did Samara. “It had been one of my dreams,” the 5-foot-5 Halle says. “Very happy,” the 5-foot-8 Samara says. “I remember being very happy when I found out I had made the varsity.” Each plays varsity doubles — with other Giants. Samara teams with sophomore Monique Brual, Halle with sophomore Devin Davidson. The Michael twins’ tennis games differ. The Michael twins’ personalities differ. “Each twin’s game,” Giants tennis coach Steve Rudman says, “is kind of like her personality.” Samara, a righty and a No. 1 Halle Michael sets up to crush a forehand at last weekend’s CSL North Meet. doubles player for most of the season, is a steady netter, a thinker Rudman opted to deploy Halle on the court, steely and focused, and Davidson at No. 1 doubles in willing to extend points by either his Central Suburban League North Tournament lineup last lifting a lob or executing an angle shot. Halle, a lefty and a No. 2 weekend, hoping they’d oust a doubles player for most of the strong tandem to strengthen their season, considers a two-shot rally record for this week’s Class 2A too lengthy of a rally. She loves to Glenbrook South Sectional seed blast, loves to finish, loves to play meeting. Halle Michael/Davidson fearlessly. able, hitting volleys and overheads better than I thought I would.” Rudman temporarily broke up the Samara Michael/Brual combo at the league tournament, matching Samara with sophomore Lily Tiemeyer (normally a singles player) at No. 2 doubles and letting Brual battle against No. 2 singles players. Michael/ Tiemeyer captured the Giants’ lone flight championship last weekend, downing a 2015 statequalifying doubles team from Glenbrook North in a three-set final. The final was a no-doubter, a 6-1 decision. “Good for them,” Rudman says. “Good win against a good team. That third set was decisive, nice.” Samara Michael and Brual got together on a court for a couple of hours on Oct. 9, the day after the two-day CSL North Tournament, to reconnect and drill, to get a jump on pre-sectional preparation. “I’m still getting used to doubles,” Samara admits. “I’m still working on it. Monique is a very good doubles player (a 2015 state doubles qualifier, with Tiemeyer), so that helps. What also helps is being a part of a team. Playing tennis, in general, has helped me manage my time.” The twins’ parents, Jeff and Melanie, did not spend much time on tennis courts as children. Jeff was a hoopster, Melanie a horseback rider. But Grandpa Sandy, of Highland Park, plays tennis regularly with his friends. Halle, years ago, watched her grandpa on tennis courts. Halle picked up a racket and hit shots. Halle and tennis became a good match. Samara and tennis became a good match. “I remember thinking one day, while watching my grandpa play tennis, ‘I’d like to be able to play tennis with my friends when I get older,’ ” Halle says. Rudman noticed the young twins at a tennis camp in the summer before their eighth grade, back in 2015. It didn’t take him long to project them as major contributors to his program. They had the shots and the makeup for the sport. They also had some-

thing else, something that has nothing to do with topspin or service returns or the ability to hit clean winners. “You could tell, I could tell, they would fit in nicely on a team,” Rudman recalls. “They’re good kids, nice kids, not just good tennis players. What I like about them is how much they’ve bought in as new doubles players, not always an easy thing to do. But they’re figuring out what it takes to be good at doubles, and they’re getting better and better, more confident. Both respect the game and respect their opponents. “They’ve got some older friends now, through tennis, and they’re enjoying the chances to mesh and bond with them,” he adds. Notable: Highland Park High and Glenbrook North shared the overall Central Suburban League North girls tennis championship. HP, which beat Glenbrook North 5-2 in a dual this fall, had held a 30-28 edge (regular-season points) on GBN before the start of the CSL North Tournament Oct. 7-8. HP reached six of the seven flight title matches on Oct. 8, winning one of them (No. 2 doubles, Samara Michael/Lily Tiemeyer); GBN won four flight titles and finished runner-up in another, providing the bulk of its 17 tourney points to HP’s 15. The Giants’ tournament runners-up: Caitlin Goldberg (No. 1 singles); Monique Brual (No. 2 singles); Reggi Deutsch (No. 3) singles); Halle Michael/Devin Davidson (No. 1 doubles); Emily Langsam/ Mia LoGrande (No. 3 doubles); and Erin Lothan/Sammi Beerman (No. 4 doubles). … HP vies for state berths at this weekend’s Class 2A Glenbrook South Sectional, beginning Oct. 14. HP’s sectional lineup: Goldberg and Tiemeyer (singles); Samara Michael/Brual and Halle Michael/Davidson (doubles) … HP finished with an 11-4 dual mark this fall, going undefeated in CSL North duals and losing only to Hinsdale Central, New Trier and Stevenson (twice). “Stevenson,” Giants coach Steve Rudman says, “was the deepest team we faced.”

COUNTING ON CALLIE Fauntleroy a trusted power source in New Trier’s volleyball lineup BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

A

young volleyball player at New Trier sits, all alone, as older players in a gym laugh and converse and laugh a little louder. It is a preseason practice, in late August. The shy girl is a sophomore, maybe a freshman. She looks down. She looks unsure. A senior volleyball player approaches her quiet colleague. The New Trier senior is 6-foot-3 middle Callie Fauntleroy, a cocaptain, as friendly off the court as she is dominant on it. Fauntleroy says something. Her audience of one looks up and smiles, feels a part of the team, feels comfortable in a gym that suddenly feels warm. The life preserver on land wears No. 13 for New Trier’s girls volleyball team, owner of a 19-8 record after winning the Discovery Tournament at Glenbrook North on Oct. 8. Fauntleroy has a sound reason for her pleasant, welcoming nature these days. “I was one of those quiet, uncertain girls my freshman year,” Fauntleroy, a fourth-year varsity member, says. “I came out of my shell because of the senior leaders we had on our team [in 2013, when the Trevians placed third at the Class 4A state tournament]. Seniors like Taylor Tashima and Abbey Boyd. They encouraged me to be myself, 100 percent. That opened my eyes. That was leadership. I learned a lot from them, from all of the seniors. Taylor, she’s the best leader. I’ve tried to model myself after her, and here I am, a senior. “I’ve been preparing myself, for this season, for three years.” The team leader in kills and blocks came up big late in the first set of New Trier’s 26-24, 25-6 defeat of visiting Niles North on Oct. 5. NT trailed 24-23 when Fauntleroy hammered a kill, an emphatic moment. The Trevians won the next two points and the set, thanks to two more kills from Fauntleroy. Emphatic, emphatic. Fauntleroy’s power in crunch time emboldened New Trier and

deflated Niles North. No wonder NT raced to a 16-4 lead in the second set. Fauntleroy would finish with a team-high 10 kills, six coming in the first set.

“Her speed to the block is the aspect of her game that has improved the most,” Trevians volleyball coach Hannah Hsieh says of the Winnetka resident and

George Washington University recruit. “She closes in on the hitter, quickly. What I’ve also noticed, what a lot of us have noticed, is Callie’s leadership

abilities this year. She’s taking charge, working hard, pushing the girls in practice, being responsible. Her leadership was quite evident during our [preseason] sleepover, our lock in, at our Northfield campus. “She cares about the team and her teammates,” the coach adds, “and her great sense of humor puts her teammates at ease. She has this way about her, a knack for pulling a teammate in and making her feel special.” Fauntleroy’s older sisters, Katie and Haley, played volleyball at New Trier. Katie (a 6-1 outside hitter) continued her career at Colgate, Haley (a 6-3 middle) at the University of Virginia. Katie, the Central Suburban League South Player of the Year in 2011, graduated in the spring; Haley is a Cavaliers junior and helped a Wildcat Juniors club volleyball team (18 Black) place fifth in the open division at AAU nationals. Callie’s, twin brother, Billy, stands 6-8. Plays volleyball, too. Bruises volleyballs. He ranked third among teammates in kills for the Trevians’ state runner-up squad last spring. Volleyballs, not leaves, must fall from the trees near the Fauntleroys’ house. “I wanted to pick a sport I could possibly play in college,” Callie, a former Wildcat Juniors middle and a current First Alliance middle, says of her decision to choose volleyball at the age of 12. “Just the other day, during a practice, I realized again why I love this sport as much as I do. We were playing a point, an intense one, and I got to celebrate with my teammates after it. We were creating connections, competing hard and playing together. I remember feeling pure happiness during the celebration. Volleyball … it’s such a team sport. I love that part of it.” Team New Trier threw its collective heart into the two-day Discovery Tournament last weekend. Hsieh’s girls went 5-0, topping Glenbrook South in a semifinal and Loyola Academy

in the final. Fauntleroy, senior co-captain Nicole Urbanowicz and sophomore setter Payton Hielscher earned all-tournament honors. Fauntleroy struck 43 blocks to go with her 16 blocks, a pair of team-high totals; Urbanowicz finished with 24 kills and 46 digs; and Hielscher lofted 94 assists and delivered eight aces. “Callie,” Urbanowicz says, “is reliable for us, so reliable. You just know, when the ball is up, and Callie goes after it, she’s going to put that shot down. You saw what she did [at the end of the Niles North match], coming through with those kills. We can always count on her.” Fauntleroy is thinking of majoring in business or double majoring in business and psychology at George Washington University. Her dream job? It’s in an office somewhere, filled with all kinds of employees. Go-getters and followers. Assertive ones and quiet ones. Like the makeup of a volleyball team. “I want to be a boss, a powerful woman in the business world,” Fauntleroy says. “I want to motivate my employees, help them in any way possible. I want to be a big influence on them.” Notable: New Trier downed visiting Niles North in straight sets on its Senior Night Oct. 5. Trevians junior middle Grace Kapsimalis had five kills, and senior outside hitter Nicole Urbanowicz pounded four. NT improved to 6-1 in the Central Suburban League South. … Other significant NT stats from the Discovery Tournament held last weekend at New Trier and Glenbrook North: sophomore outside hitter Taite Ryan (20 kills, nine blocks, nine aces, 33 digs); sophomore outside hitter/rightside hitter Maddie McGregor (15 kills, seven blocks); sophomore middle Gillian Klise (10 kills, 11 blocks); sophomore outside hitter Grace Bozzo (56 digs, five aces); and senior right-side hitter Emma Tomlinson (five aces).

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Dance-loving Horwitch keeps in step with her community BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

S

he danced as a child, as a teen, as a college student. Those figure skates, the ones she wore before modern dance beckoned, rested somewhere in a closet, maybe in a garage, and never moved again. Frozen forever ... in room temperature. The dancer, 39-year-old Wendy Horwitch, still loves to dance, still loves to talk about dance. The Highland Park High School graduate, the Highland Park resident and the Highland Park Community House (HPCH) Executive Director sits across from me at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in — where else? — Highland Park and interrupts herself while praising one of her mentors, former HPHS Dance Director Ginny Siano. “Am I talking too much?” Horwitch, in her ninth year as the face of HPCH, asks as she awaits her order of scrambled eggs and a bialy. “I hope not. I am so used to asking the questions, most of the questions, where I work. People come to me, wanting to hold a special event in their lives at Community House, a unique place. I want to know all about the family, so I ask away. I’m

curious about people. I like to listen. I then like to tell them, ‘This is your home. Dress it up any way you like. It’s your home for the event, your space, your canvas.’ ” The Highland Park Woman’s Club, founded in 1899, started using the Highland Park Community House for its meetings and programs in 1924, a roaring year. The Woman’s Club oversaw the establishment of the city’s first public library. It conducted blood drives during World War II. It became synonymous with community philanthropy. Today, HPCH hosts public and private events and educational and cultural programs. Wedding receptions are held there. Baptisms and bar mitzvahs. Baby naming ceremonies and 50-year wedding anniversary celebrations. The Art Center Highland Park is a tenant, as is the Improv Playhouse. “I love my job,” says Horwitch, a University of Illinois graduate (speech communications major and Spanish minor, after majoring in dance for her first year and a half in Champaign). “I am surrounded by the arts, by artists, and I get to use my communications skills. How fortunate am I? I have always been a grateful person, and I could not be more grateful than I am for the job I have.”

The HPHS graduate met her future husband, Mark, a Deerfield High School graduate and a lawyer, at the University of Illinois. They have two sons, ages nine and six. The father took his sons to the Highland ParkDeerfield prep football game last month, the mother’s alma mater emerging victorious, 14-0. Wendy’s best friends in the world? It’s a three-way tie: her husband and her two sisters. “Do you want to know the most important thing I’ve tried to convey to my sons?” she asks. I nod. “It’s to be best friends, now and for the rest of their lives,” she adds. “ T h e y ’re going to need each other. They’re going to want to stay in touch, share moments. I cherish how close I am to my sisters, how often we communicate. I’m grateful for their friendship.”

Wendy Horwitch

Horwitch revisits her memories of Siano, the former HPHS dance honcho. Freshman year at HPHS,

a girl named Wendy took a dance class, taught by Siano. The girl paid attention. The teacher inspired the girl. “She pushed me, encouraged me,” Horwitch recalls. “She believed in me. I had a wonderful experience growing up in Highland Park, and Ginny was a big part of that experience. I will always appreciate what she did for me at a young age. Dance was my passion at a young age, and my mentor helped me develop that passion.” Every other year, HPHS p re s e n t s FOCUS on the Arts, a three-day, four-night fine arts festival. The next one is slated for the spring of 2017. There is a dance committee, in charge of organizing workshops and curating professional dancers to perform during the festival. The committee held its first meeting this month. In attendance? An eager, expressive, diligent Wendy Horwitch, no surprise. She can’t wait for the start of the 2017

FOCUS on the Arts. She can’t wait for the start of the next dance committee meeting. “It has been a strength at Highland Park High School for the longest time,” Horwitch, a North Shore School of Dance product, says of the high school’s arts program. “I like to praise it every chance I get, because kids need an outlet, need opportunities, to express themselves and find their talents. Is there a better way to do those things than through the arts?” Movies thrill Horwitch. Move her. Her favorite flicks of all-time, if you put her on the spot and ask her to name them, are Dirty Dancing and Flashdance. Her destination for movies, her Blockbuster Video (RIP), is the Highland Park Public Library. Her favorite form of an outdoor escape is a long walk with either a family member or a friend. Horwitch has settled in nicely and comfortably, at the corner of Contentment and Appreciation. Point — make that, pointe — to dance for that location. “Dance,” she says, “gave me a lot of confidence when I was young, and that has carried over into my professional life. Energy, positive energy, is important to me. You know what they say, ‘Attitude is altitude.’ Carry that light into a room.”
