or some, Thanksgiving is a grim affair, weighed down by a dry bird and an annual encounter with bizarre relatives. For most, it’s a fun holiday, the kickoff to an ultra-long weekend replete with a feast.

I’ve spent many Thanksgivings out of state — in Los Angeles, New York, the Bahamas. It’s hard to match the North Shore, which always features weather appropriate for Thanksgiving family football games (40s with a glimmer of sun) along with food in beautiful homes. It’s an ideal place to give thanks for our blessings.

The word “turkey” has a special meaning beyond that of Thanksgiving food and bowling prowess. A teacher once called me a turkey before assigning me two demerits, if that helps you understand the term.

Below, I’m going to call out five turkeys before Thanksgiving arrives — to get them out of my system, as they say.

1) Why do newspapers, except for Investor’s Business Daily, refuse to slide two bags (one each way) over the product before it’s tossed to the end of a driveway on a rainy day? Often the publication is soaked and worthless — what other industry delivers its goods in such a slipshod manner?

2) Speaking of our free press, how did this headline over a column about quarterback Jay Cutler slip past the gaze of sports editors last week at Chicago’s second-biggest daily: ‘Hedy Hey Hedy Hey Hedy” Yes, those words fill space where a headline should be written. But maybe I’m mistaken, and those inkstained veterans did their job. Perhaps “Hedy Hey Hedy Hey Hedy” was one of the audibles barked out by the NFL’s highest-paid player. That would explain the anemic offense.

Debut novel shows how a man’s past sins catch up with him

■ by jake jarvi Alastair Davie of Northbrook has made his living with words, first by writing for publications like Reuters and the Financial Times in London.

When he came to the United States more than 30 years ago, he delved into public relations and marketing communications, aiming to communicate his clients’ messages as effectively as possible. After retiring in 2002 as the director of corporate communications for Foster Wheeler Corp., a Fortune 500 company, he finally had the time to put his words to work in his favorite medium: historical fiction. His first novel, “A Sixth Sense,” was released this year.

“I was thinking to myself: What if I wanted to escape from that?

How would I go about it?” | Alastair Davie NSW: Tell us about your book.

AD: It’s a historical saga about a man’s past sins catching up with him 50 years later. It’s set in the Dublin tenements, which are the slums of Dublin, and he’s brought up by an alcoholic single mother.

His father was what the British call a Black and Tan, a member of a special police force brought in to control the Irish in the 1920s. Francis Reagan, my

protagonist, escapes from Ireland to go to the Spanish Civil War as an ambulance driver, where he gets captured and is turned in to work for the Germans during the Second World War as a spy in Belfast.

NSW: What inspired the story?

AD: I’m very interested in 20th-century history. I picked up a book called “Dublin Tenement Life: An Oral History” by Professor Kevin Kearns, interviews with people who actually lived in tenements in Dublin.

It fascinated me, and I was thinking to myself: What if I wanted to escape from that? How would I go about it? What would I do? And it got me thinking.

NSW: Why start writing novels?

AD: I retired. And I always wanted to write a book, or several books. Now I have the time to do it.

It’s different from journalistic writing. We’re always taught to be more succinct. Short sentences and get to the facts. Whereas novel writing, you’re expanding thoughts and ideas and situations, which you can’t do when you’re doing a news story.

NSW: What are you working on now?

AD: Another historical novel set in the Bahamas when the Duke of Windsor, who had been Edward the VIII before he married Mrs. Simpson, was put in the Bahamas as the governor to basically get him out of Europe. There was always a fear that he would be kidnapped by the Nazis. His family had a German background actually; he regarded himself as more German than British.

My main character is an RAF doctor. During the war, in the Bahamas, they set up a couple of airbases for training RAF bomber pilots. It was also a ferrying point for the Americans to send planes to the Middle East and Asia. ■

Flannery, 16, is playing the lead role of Aninka.

“Brundibár” was written in 1938 by Jewish composer Hans Krása in the Nazi-

occupied Czech Republic. The children’s opera was performed by children in the Terezin concentration camp to delude the outside world into thinking the Jews were being treated humanely. Of 15,000 children in the camp, only 100 survived.

Weissberger is one of those children.

“Brundibár” performances run through Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Mary Wilson Beyer Auditorium in Park Ridge.

■ by jake jarvi When Nicole Basil of Wilmette received a new bicycle in third grade, she, her brother, and her parents started looking for a charity to donate their used bikes.

“We couldn’t find one, so I said, ‘Why don’t we start our own charity?’” says Basil, now a 15-yearold freshman at New Trier High School. “My little third-grader mind just blurted that out.”

Seven years later, the charity she named Pedal Power is still going strong. On the first Saturday each November, it accepts bicycle donations from 9 a.m. until noon at drop-off points along the North Shore. The first year, Pedal Power only featured one location for drop-offs, Basil’s elementary school in Wilmette. Now, the drop-off points include bike shops in Winnetka, Northbrook, Highland Park, and a Home Depot in Evanston that accepts donations year-round.

After receiving 250 bikes the first year, the family wanted to put them to good use. Corresponding with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) administration, they were directed to one school in particular that serves the children of low-income families. On the day of the annual bike drive, the Basil family rents a truck, retrieves the donated bikes, separates the ones that are in good condition and takes them to the Cesar E. Chavez Multicultural Academic Center Elementary School on the South Side. The bikes are presented as rewards to children who make the honor roll.

“We get invited to some of the honor roll assemblies,” Basil says. “One of the first years, the kids didn’t know about the bike winnings yet, and they hid them behind a divider screen in the room. They

called up all of the kids who were on the honor roll, and they opened up the screen and said, ‘All of you get a bike.’ They were so excited.”

Thanks to a grant from the Evanston Bike Club, the Basil family is able to make sure each child who receives a bike also receives a helmet.

Basil isn’t the only member of the family dedicated to Pedal Power. Her parents help collect the bikes and deliver them on the day of the bike drive, and her 13-year-old brother Bennett manages Pedal Power’s social media presence as well as its website, gopedalpower.com.

“They called up all of the kids who were on the honor roll, and they opened up the screen and said, ‘All of you get a bike.’ They were so excited.” | Nicole Basil Each year, Pedal Power receives bikes that are in poor condition, but they still put them to great use.

CPS directs them to the Northside Learning Center, where students with cognitive disabilities receive both an academic education as well as vocational life skills, such as bike repair and maintenance, using the donated bikes. No matter how damaged the bikes, they can help a child learn a practical trade that they can apply for the rest of their life.

Says Basil, “My philosophy is — a bike can take you far, but good grades can take you further. [Cesar E. Chavez] recently showed us their test scores, and they’re now ranked the No. 1 school in their district.” ■

Janie and Chuck enjoy sun and fun in Florida

Janie and Chuck Walsh of Lake Forest will chair the 25th Anniversary Spirit of Saint Nicholas Ball to benefit the children served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago on Dec. 5.

Janie and Chuck Walsh had a disclaimer before talking about their recent trip to Delray Beach.

“The best part was going to a relaxed date night with my lovely wife.”

“We might fight over this because we have different ideas as to what makes our ‘favorite weekend,’” says Janie, laughing.

The Walsh’s second home in Florida is designed for sunny comfort, and this particular weekend was spent no differently.

With a wraparound balcony, the Walsh’s opened up all the windows and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres with friends while boats plied the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway.

“We love sitting and watching the sunsets,” says Janie.

They also enjoy walks and found time to go for one along the nearby beach with their

Bichon Frise, Bailey, in tow; they also visited wildlife sanctuaries for nature walks.

“Janie’s sanctuary is getting over to Neiman Marcus,” says Chuck, and Janie admits that she did make time to go shopping downtown. For Chuck, a partner of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls, his sanctuary is settling down to a great sports weekend.

“Watching is ‘coaching’, just so you know,” says Janie.

The couple made time to visit a polo match in Wellington. It’s there that some of the best South American talent plays in Florida during the winter months. They also took out a boat with their lease arrangement with the local yacht club. But Chuck was quick to add his favorite part of the weekend was spending time with Janie.

“The best part was going to a relaxed date night with my lovely wife,” says Chuck. “Of course, if the Bulls are playing, I’ve got to watch them!”■ ~ Simon Murray

The correlation between expensive weddings and failed marriages ■

If you’ve been in a grocery store checkout line or turned on your television in the last month, you’ve undoubtedly seen photos from actor George Clooney’s September wedding to attorney Amal Alamuddin. It was a strikingly glamorous affair in Venice, what with the bride and groom arriving at each party by boat in designer clothes, surrounded by their spectacularly styled Hollywood friends and family.

(The wedding photos were sold to two magazines – one in the U.S. and another in Europe – with the proceeds slated for various human rights charities, so I feel like my study of them was somewhat selfless.)

The party for 100 guests is estimated to have cost anywhere from $1.6 million to $14 million, with the former coming from more reputable sources. We’d expect nothing less from this Oscar-winning movie star. After all, Kim Kardashian spent $6 million-$10 million (there were some deep discounts for promotional efforts during the televised event, too) on her wedding to NBA star Kris Humphries, to whom she

was wed for 72 hours; she spent another $15 million on her subsequent wedding to Kanye West. We’ll see how that works out.

If you trust the magazines in the grocery aisle, Prince William and Kate Middleton spent $34 million (mostly on security).

Michael Jordan spent $10 million on his most recent wedding, on details like a seven-layer, crystal-encrusted rum wedding cake. And Justin Timberlake spent $6.5 million on his wedding in Italy, reserving an entire hotel and the adjacent buildings to avoid the paparazzi.

But for the basic couple, wedding website theknot.com reported that the average price of a wedding in the United States in 2013 was $29,858.

Clooney’s budget is fascinating for watchers like me, but it doesn’t make the wedding any more or less meaningful than the run-of-the-mill family affairs we all attend regularly. In fact, a new study from two economics professors at Atlanta’s Emory University found that couples who spend less on their weddings tend to have longerlasting marriages than those who splurge.

They found a similar correlation between less expensive engagement rings and lower divorce rates.

In order to determine these relationships, researchers collected detailed surveys from 3,151 adults in the United States who are or have been married. Subsequent analysis found that women whose weddings cost more than $20,000 divorced at a rate roughly 1.6 times higher than women whose weddings cost between $5,000 and $10,000. Couples who spent $1,000 or less on their big day had a lower than average rate of divorce.

But the study found that couples shouldn’t cut the guest list in order to cut costs. Surveys suggested that the greater the number of people who attend a wedding, the lower the rate of divorce.

Research didn’t explain why these things were true, but the researchers offered a few ideas. Inexpensive weddings may relieve young couples of financial strains that stress a marriage. Big weddings may reflect the large support systems that couples have to help them through the hard times that challenge every marriage.

At the wedding I was honored to witness earlier this month, the most moving moments were the least expensive. The bride’s sister sang a special prayer during

the ceremony, and the couple locked away love letters with a special bottle of wine they will enjoy on their first anniversary.

Guests agreed that night that the happy couple has lots of anniversaries ahead of them.

1. Roll out pastry dough on a lightly floured surface with a lightly floured rolling pin into a 13-inch round and fit into a 9-inch glass or metal pie plate.

Trim excess dough, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang, then fold overhang under pastry and press against rim of pie plate to reinforce edge. Decoratively crimp edge and chill shell until firm, about 30 minutes.

2. While shell chills, put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 375°F. 3. Lightly prick bottom and side of chilled pie shell all over with a fork. Line shell with foil and fill with pie weights. Bake until pastry is pale golden along rim and set underneath weights, about 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and bake shell until

bottom and side of pastry are pale golden, about 10 minutes more.

Cool completely in pie plate on a rack, about 20 minutes. Leave oven on. 4. Make filling by heating 1 cup sour cream in a double boiler or a large metal bowl set over a large wide pot of boiling water until warm, stirring occasionally.

5. Whisk together pumpkin, yolks, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sour cream in another bowl until combined and whisk into hot sour cream. Cook over simmering water, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until thickened and registers 170°F on thermometer, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and cool pumpkin mixture in bowl set in a larger bowl of ice water, stirring

occasionally, about 15 minutes.

6. Beat egg whites in another bowl with an electric mixer until they just hold stiff peaks. Fold whites into pumpkin mixture gently but thoroughly. 7. Pour filling into cooled shell, smoothing top, and bake until filling is set and puffed around edge, 40 to 50 minutes. Cool pie to room temperature on a rack, about 2 hours. COOKS' NOTE: Pie can be made 1 day ahead and chilled, covered.

Jeremy Bringardner is the corporate executive chef for LYFE (Love Your Food Everyday) Kitchen.

What’s your background? At 14, I got a job at Domino’s Pizza — they promised me all the free pop and pizza you could want and $4.25 an hour. I fell in love immediately with making things, creating things.

When I turned 16, I got into real restaurants and was crazy about it. I was always obsessed with flavor and taste, and I was very interested in nutrition as well. It went perfectly hand in hand with cooking — I could control what I was eating. I believe every person has different nutritional needs. I went to culinary school in Rhode Island and got a degree in nutrition as well.

How many years have you been cooking? About 25 years.

How did you get involved with LYFE? It was really the right time, right place. I happened to cross paths with Chef Art Smith’s personal assistant, right as they got the inquiry to work on this project. She knew my skill set — especially the nutrition.

It started as a few weeks of consulting four and a half years ago; as we were working with all these ideas, we put out all these different sauces and pick led items and vegetable

preparation. Eventually, the flavors of LYFE Kitchen were born.

What goes into creating a menu on a corporate level? At the heart of it, it’s the same as if you’re creating recipes for a single restaurant — you’re using everything you know and understand about food, all the time exploring food and looking for inspiration. It gets more interesting when the recipe has to go through a transformation so that it’s operationally viable in the setting it’s going to be executed in.

We have more than 10 restaurants in several different states, and I can’t be in all places at the same time, so I have to design the recipe in away that’s very simple to execute. I have to anticipate human error and streamline the recipe.

Then it’s all about training and development. It’s more complex when you consider that in each state we have a different market and different distributors. We go through this process so we know what’s in our foods. Each time we go to a new market, we have to go though this process.

W hat ’s LY FE’s signature dish? Chocolate budino. It’s a rich and indulgent decadent chocolate-y dessert.

And it’s still good for you.

Favorite fruit: Cactus pear.

Most memorable kitchen moment: I worked for Chef Charlie Trotter for three years. He sold a private dinner

for 20 people at a charity auction, and it was hosted by the Mondavi family. So we traveled across the country — it was me and Chef Trotter cooking an eightcourse meal.

In my mind I was like, ‘Oh my God. He’s asking me to make all these changes. There’s not enough time.’ “ But you don’t question whether it can be done or not — you just do it. I kicked it into fifth gear and an hour and half later, I was ready to go — even with all those changes. He pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realize I was capable of more that I even realized.

New Winnetka home is a fit for social families

The brick home features 4,600 square feet inside.

For Mertius Custom Builders’ newest construction project at 556 Hawthorn Lane in Winnetka, the answer is state-of-the-art.

Three levels (not counting a finished basement) are incorporated in its 4,600 square feet, which features six bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths.

Walking into the brick façade’s entryway, the open space is a lesson in creativity. The hallway is bookended by a dining and living room area and feature coffered ceilings. Adjacent to the living room is a study, which features a beamed celling.

But, for the main floor at least, the focal point is past the open kitchen and breakfast area (and adjacent mud room). Dominating the space is the family room with cathedral ceilings that rise precipitously, with a masonry fireplace that contrasts nicely with the large bay windows that spill light into the room.

“We’ve designed the home with the high-end features and luxury finishes a buyer in search of that lifestyle wants and expects,” says Brian Brunhofer, president of Meritus Homes and Meritus Custom Builders. “Plus, depending on when they purchase the home, buyers can still weigh in on some of the finishing touches and further customize the home to their needs.”

And maybe that’s the better question: What can a custom home look like nowadays? Because that really comes down to preference.

While the 1,200-square-foot basement features one of the six rooms and a bathroom, the floor plan only hints at what can be accommodated for the homeowner. And the first floor has the option of a

But it wasn’t applause.

It was the sound made by people moments before the same people started clapping at a sectional meet Nov. 15.

It was the collective sound of a throng uttering “Whoa” and another throng emitting “Wow.” Talent from Loyola Academy senior diver Katie Rourke triggered the spontaneous symphony — immediately after judges awarded her two 9.5s, a 9 and two 8s for her inward pike.

“She looked great,” Ramblers diving coach Tony D’Amico said. “Katie changed gears during her fifth or sixth dive. I could tell; it was easy to tell.

“She was aggressively fighting, less passive.”

The resplendent inward pike was Rourke’s sixth of 11 dives, and it swelled her total to 271.1 points — a smidge behind the leader at the time, New Trier junior Sophie Conley (272.5). Rourke then received two more 9s and three 8.5s for her reverse tuck on dive No. 7.

Momentum was all hers, a force the Glenview resident rode to a superb and sectional-winning total of 531.6 points; only three other state qualifiers eclipsed 500 points last weekend, with Naperville Central junior Sydney Dusel ranking second behind Rourke after amassing 518.55 points to win the Metea Valley Sectional in Aurora.

Conley (492.9) took runner-up honors at Niles North.

“My last six dives are my reliable ones,” said the University of Florida-bound Rourke, a two-time AAU national platform champ (16-18 age group) and one-time

AAU national synchro champ [with Hinsdale Central senior Margaret McCarthy].

“When I’m confident I do better, plain and simple.”

Rourke last appeared at the state meet in 2011, when she placed 26th as a freshman. The Glenbrook Aquatics club member chose to not compete for LA the past two seasons.

“Katie,” D’Amico said, “is super strong. The thing is, you have to control that strength, and that’s something Katie does that quite well.”

Rourke’s swimming teammates collected 16 more state berths in the sectional’s afternoon session, as LA accumulated 255 points to top runner-up and four-time reigning state champion New Trier (219).

Ramblers swimming coach Mike Hengelmann stood poolside after the meet, proud and pleased but not ecstatic.

“A lot of our girls were not fully rested for this meet,” said the 2000 Loyola Academy graduate. “Our focus now shifts to state. Right now it’s all about making a lot of noise on Friday (during the state preliminaries).”

The most poignant visual at last weekend’s sectional might have been LA sophomore Olivia Andrew releasing happy tears for senior teammate/car pool mate Sophia Funck after Funck qualified for state with a fifth-place time of 1:06.88 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Funck’s seed time in the event was 1:08.38.

“I was thrilled for her because she’d been working incredibly hard all season,” said Andrew, who qualified for state in the maximum four events for the second year in a row.

Andrew shed a bout of nervousness to win the 200 freestyle in 1:52.94, which ranks fifth among all state qualifiers in the event. She also advanced to state in the 100 free (52.33, fourth place) and as a member of the runner-up 400 free (3:31.87) and fifth-place 200 free (1:37.43) relays.

LA senior and University of Pennsylvania recruit Libby Jardeleza also left Niles North as a multiple state qualifier.

The reigning state runner-up in the 100 backstroke touched second in that event (56.52) on Nov. 15, after winning the 100 butterfly in 56.74. She also served as the lead-off leg on the third-place 200 medley relay (1:47.7, with juniors Claire Voss and Maria Kyle and freshman Cassidy Coughlin).

The 500 free was a family affair for sisters Grace and Ella Tierney. Grace, a senior, swam in lane 3; Ella, a sophomore, oared in lane 4. The elder won the event in 5:02.96, ahead of Ella’s fourth-place and state-qualifying 5:08.79.

The siblings swam legs on the 400 free relay (with Andrew and Kyle). University of Wisconsin-bound Grace Tierney — second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free at state last fall — also anchored the 200 free relay (following legs from senior Claire Rushin, Andrew and Coughlin) and qualified for state in the 200 free with a third-place 1:53.62.

Kyle provided the Ramblers’ 10th top-three effort at the 14-team meet, clocking a third-place 57.39 in the 100 fly.

LA’s other state-qualifying results at the highly competitive sectional: Coughlin (fifth, 50 free, 24.27); junior Jamie Kolar (fifth, 100 back, 58.72); Rushin (sixth, 50 free, 24.28); and Voss (seventh, 100 breast, 1:07.22).

The state meet starts Nov. 21 at Evanston.

Notable: Ramblers freshman Margaret Guanci did not qualify for state but received a sixth-place medal for her 2:11.53 in the 200 IM. … D’Amico was named Niles North Sectional diving coach of the year. … Christina Loukas’ famous name resurfaced at the Niles North Sectional after Rourke’s 531.6-point day. Loukas — the former star diver at Deerfield (’04) and two-time U.S. Olympian — won the 2003 state diving title with a meet-record 507.55-point total. She also topped the state diving fields in ’01 and ’02.

Now 28, she finished eighth (3-meter springboard) at the 2008 Olympics in China and ninth in the same event at the 2012 Summer Games in London. ■

Francke’s inspiring return not enough in state quarterfinal

■ by t.j. brown sports@northshoreweekend.com Will Francke’s high school football career concluded with New Trier’s 38-10 state playoff loss at Stevenson.

The 12-0 Patriots were able to do what mononucleosis could not — end Francke’s football career.

Francke’s return might have ended in a Class 8A state quarterfinal loss on Nov. 15, but rest assured it was noticed and appreciated by his Trevians teammates, who stood tall against Stevenson until the roof caved in late in the first half.

“At practice on Wednesday, I show up and all of a sudden I see Will in his practice jersey ready to go.

I asked, ‘What’s going on?’ ” said teammate Andrew Hauser, the Central Suburban League South codefensive player of the year. “It was a big surprise, and it was a big emotional boost for the team.”

Francke had last played Nov. 1 in the Trevians’ first-round win over Glenbrook South. The following week started with Francke out of school with flu-like symptoms. The Friday morning before the second-round game with Curie, blood work came back confirming Francke had mono.

“I thought I had played my last high school football game,” said Francke, an all-CSL South selection who made three tackles against Stevenson. “That was tough for me. But when I got cleared, I couldn’t be more excited to have another opportunity to be out here with my friends doing what we love.”

After his physician determined his spleen had not swelled, Francke was given the green light to play.

“I didn’t think it was real when he texted me Wednesday morning that he was coming back,” New Trier first-year coach Brian Doll said. “When I saw him, he had a doctor’s note that he was cleared. I’ve never had a kid with mono play, and we were thrilled to have him back for us.

“And,” the coach added, “he did an unbelievable job.”

The return could not have come at a better time as New Trier was without starting linebacker Joe Lewis, who broke his forearm late in the Curie game.

In Stevenson, the Trevians (10-2) had to prepare for the top-seeded team in Class 8A. “That’s our defensive leader,” Doll said of Francke.

“It would have been really hard without him in a lot of different situations, because he really knows all the calls and the check-offs.”

Despite the 38-10 score, New Trier’s defense stood out early, forcing some key turnovers and keeping the team in the game as the offense tried to find

by Nick Endre to give the Trevians an early 3-0 lead.

On the next drive, New Trier nearly took the ball at midfield thanks to an apparent forced fumble by Hauser, but the officials ruled that Stevenson’s Willie Bourbon was down. Later on, New Trier’s Steve Salinas was able to strip the ball from Bourbon at the NT 1-yard and linebacker Tim Fox (five tackles) recovered.

“We were feeling good after the first quarter,” Francke said. “We were forcing the ball loose, but the calls didn’t go our way. We just lost the energy in the second quarter.”

Stevenson scored three times in the second quarter thanks to two interceptions by James Mahoney inside New Trier territory.

New Trier’s offense struggled as sophomore quarterback Clay Czyzynski (8-for-22-2, 127 yards) tried to shake off a hip injury, but he was pressured all afternoon. He eventually gave way to senior Will McCain, who drove the Trevians down the field in their final offensive drive. With less than a minute left in the game McCain found Scott Hammes for a 10-yard touchdown pass.

“I was happy for Will McCain,” Doll said. “It was a good moment for him to end his senior year.”

Notable: Hammes finished the game with three catches for 43 yards, while senior running back Kevin Mulhern rushed 13 times for 45 yards.

Krauskopf not only had the pick, but he also finished the game with five tackles. Nick Blach had six tackles, while Charlie Schoder added three stops.

Right tackle Jack Palmer, who suffered a leg injury in the Curie game, started the Stevenson game.

However his injury flared up again, and he came out early.

“Our kids at the end of the game cared so much for each other that they were running around asking if every senior had gotten in,” said Doll, a New Trier graduate. “They wanted to end on a positive note.”

“Coach Doll made a world of difference this year,” said Hauser, who had three solo tackles to go along with a quarterback sack and tackle for loss. “New Trier football is moving in the right direction.

“If these juniors and sophomores keep working in the weight room, they’ll have even more success than we had this year.”

New Trier placed eight players on the all-conference list: Francke, Hauser, Mulhern, Hammes, Palmer, Balch, Matt Kaskey and Colin Casas. ■

■ by dan shalin sports@northshoreweekend.com During the prelims at this weekend’s state swimming and diving meet in Evanston, Lake Forest’s talented junior, Carmen White, will spend the time between dives chatting with other competitors, joking around with her coach and generally trying to have fun.

But White should not be mistaken for somebody who

doesn’t take the sport seriously. In fact, her happy-go-lucky demeanor represents progress for an athlete who once cared too much about the sport.

“Through my whole career, I’d get stressed out. I put a lot of pressure on myself and it hurt my diving,” said White, who took up the sport while in middle school. “Now, I try to have the right mindset, at practices and during meets, I just try to have fun, and it has paid off.

White, who finished 19th in the state as a sophomore, enters this year’s meet with the 16th best sectional score

(455.10) which she earned during a title-winning performance at the Lake Forest Sectional on Nov. 15.

White’s sectional score actually broke the school’s alltime 11-dive record of 421.95, set by Amelia Tait in 1996.

After the sectional, White’s focus quickly shifted to state, where she narrowly missed making the 16-person first cut last year.

The top 12 from the prelims Nov. 21 — after a couple of rounds and cuts — advance to the finals session Nov. 22.

“Basically, my only goal is to make the (first) cut and dive for the next three dives,” White said. “I’m not planning on making the top 12, but if miracles do happen . . .

I’m going to have fun and not worry about my place, not look at the scoreboard. I’ll see my scores but won’t look at what place I’m in until after the first five rounds. Then, we’ll go from there.”

Lake Forest diving coach Pam Uhrik said she believes White is plenty capable of making the top 12. The coach points out that judges may have scored White’s sectional performance a little low, and that during the season, the diver outscored several of the competitors who currently sit above her entering state. Of course, Uhrik is not getting ahead of herself.

“The No. 1 goal is to get into that top 12, but first you have to be in the 16,” she said earlier in the week. “Carmen has a strong first five dives. If she does those like she does every day, she will do well. We’re working really hard to solidify her next three dives (for Saturday).”

Also, White’s experience should be a plus. In addition to competing at last year’s state meet, which was held at New Trier, she took part in an invite earlier this season at Evanston, site of this weekend’s competition.

“It’s important to be comfortable with the boards,” Uhrik said. “A lot of the divers haven’t had a chance to dive on those boards, so that’s a little leg up for her too.”

After an offseason training at Northbrook’s Glenbrook Aquatics and competing on the AAU circuit, and working with Uhrik for the last several months, White said she’s confident in her ability to hit her dives. The key to success at state, she said, will be her attention to detail.

“I have the dives down,” she said. “Now, it’s about being consistent and just making small adjustments, pointing toes and all the little things. It’s the little things that make all the difference.”

Uhrik said White’s mental approach at the meet also will help determine the diver’s fate, and that’s why the coach will continue to preach the importance of having fun.

“Carmen knows I tend to be silly and try to make the moment lighthearted,” Uhrik said. “Together, we can kind of keep her calm, try to enjoy the moment and not be too stressed about it.”

Notable: The Scouts scored 315 points to easily win their sectional. The stat sheet was filled with state-qualifying efforts. Reilly Lanigan won the 200 IM 92:04.65) and 100 butterfly (56.47). She also was a member of two winning relays (200 free, 1:36.50; and 400 free, 3:28.84).

Junior Haley Nelson and sophomore Daria Pyshnenko came away with three golds each. Nelson won the 100 back (56.76), and she also competed in the winning 200 medley relay and 400 relay. Nelson added a second in the 200 free (1:51.72). Pyshnenko won the 50 free (23.66), and she also helped the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay to victories. Junior Elise Vondra was the team’s other champion (500 free, 5:05.94). The other individual qualifiers include sophomore Ella Needler in the 200 IM (3rd, 2:09.07), sophomore Madeline Smith in the 50 free (4th, 24.28) and 100 free (2nd, 52.53), junior Anika Boyd in diving (6th, 349.75), sophomore Josephine Annin in the 100 fly (3rd, 57.49), senior Clare Wieland in the 100 back (4th, 58.41) and sophomore Kayla Smith in the 100 breaststroke (3rd, 1:05.87). Sophomore Olivia Lomax advanced in the 200 medley relay. … Sophomore Ana Kohout had four first-place finishes in the Athletes with Disabilities competition: 200 free (3:50.35), 50 free (49.27), 100 free (1:50.69) and 100 breaststroke (2:29.67).

Woodlands Academy Wildcats sophomore Caylee Hamilton had to turn in papers for her literature and religion classes on Nov. 17 — after making history in a pool two days earlier.

The student-athlete from Wadsworth didn’t just become the school’s first state qualifier in swimming; she left the Niles North sectional meet as a two-time state qualifier on Nov. 15. Hamilton, a club member of Lake Forest-based Scout Aquatics, touched fourth in the 50 free (24.2) and fourth in the 100 fly (57.41).

“I’m really excited, really happy,” she said after dropping nearly a second off her seed time in the 100 fly. “I felt like I could do it.”■

Do you know where your favorite swimmer is?

Probably in bed, in a deep sleep.

“That’s me,” New Trier senior swimmer Nicole Retondo said after the Niles North swimming and diving sectional Nov. 15. “Swimmers … we get tired when we get home after practice.

“We like to go right to bed.”

Retondo likely had a tough time sleeping after a sectional meet last fall — after missing the state-qualifying cut in the 200-yard IM. The same Nicole Retondo had finished sixth in the event at the state meet in 2012, helping the Trevians capture a third straight state championship.

Retondo returned to her rousing ways in chlorination last weekend, qualifying for the state meet in the maximum four events as four-time reigning state champion New Trier (219 points) finished runner-up to Loyola Academy (255) in Skokie.

One of the events: the 200 IM. Retondo touched in a runner-up time of 2:08.24 in the third race of the day.

“Big-time kudos to Nicole,” Trevians coach Mac Guy said.

“And she still [is not fully tapered].”

Retondo also advanced to state in the 100 breaststroke (fourth place, 1:06.39) and as a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

A leg on a pair of top-five relays (200 and 400 free) at state last fall, Retondo started swimming at the age of 6.

She took to water like a duck takes to a seat behind the handlebars of an all terrain vehicle.

“I wasn’t very good back then … didn’t like swimming very much,” Retondo recalled. “It wasn’t until my freshman year that I felt I was pretty good at it.”

above the cut-off mark for state-qualifying at-large status.

Conley led the highly competitive field of plungers after six dives, upping her total to 272.5 points after garnering a trio of 9s and a couple of 8.5s from judges following her reverse pike.

University of Florida-bound Katie Rourke of Loyola Academy surpassed Conley on her eighth dive and ended up with an impressive aggregate of 531.6 points.

“I reminded myself, ‘I know what I’m doing; I have done these dives a million times,’ ” said Conley, a Glenbrook Aquatics club member like Stern. “Doing that helped me relax.”

Stern, meanwhile, relied on a similar tactic throughout an 11-dive test that lasted nearly two and a half hours.

“I stayed positive,” she said.

Some 90 minutes after the diving session, negativity threatened to throttle NT’s swimming Trevs after the squad’s 200 medley relay swam slower than the state cut (1:49.77) and had to settle for fifth place (1:50.32). But Guy’s group of girls regrouped nicely and collected 14 more state berths.

“I like our prospects [for the state meet],” Guy said minutes after the sectional’s last race, in which his 400 relay crew of Retondo, junior Julia Green, sophomore Mia Haggerty and senior Brittany Bishop (anchor) combined for a state-qualifying time of 3:35.24 (fifth place).

NT junior Morgan Conley placed third in the 50 free (24.11) and also qualified for state as the lead-off leg of the third-place 200 free relay (1:36.76, with Retondo, Bishop and sophomore Lydia O’Connell).

Haggerty sped to NT’s other top-four effort, clocking a fourth-place and state-qualifying 1:54.16 in the 200 free.

The Trevians’ other state entrants: Green (fifth place, 200 free, 1:54.72; sixth, 500 free, 5:10.04); Bishop (fifth, 100 free, 52.35); Haggerty (fifth, 500 free, 5:09.28); junior Hope Hayward (sixth, 100 breaststroke, 1:07.01); junior Samantha Adams (seventh, 100 butterfly, 57.76); Morgan Conley (seventh, 100 free, 53.29); and O’Connell (eighth, 50 free, 24.51).

The state meet starts Nov. 21 at Evanston. The finals session begins at 1 p.m. Nov. 22.

Notable: One of the most relieved Trevians after a race at last weekend’s sectional had to be Green. Her time of 5:10.04 in the 500 free got dangerously close to the state cut (5:10.14) in the event. Green had entered the grueling race with a seed time of 5:15.52. … Green touched 11th (1:52.97) in the 200 free at the state meet last fall. … Bishop and Retondo swam a leg on each of the 200 free (1:36, third place) and 400 (3:29, fifth) free relays at the 2013 state meet. … The last girls swimming and diving team to win more than four consecutive Illinois state championships was St. Charles, which captured six in a row from 1994-1999. Rosary enjoyed a run of four straight state titles (2006-09) before NT started its string of four straight state championships in 2010. … Glenbrook South’s Keith MacDonald was named Niles North Sectional coach of the year. … Retondo is thinking of majoring in either psychology or marine biology. One of the schools on her list is Miami of Ohio. … As a sophomore two years ago, Retondo swam on a relay with three seniors at the state meet. The 400 free unit of Retondo, Campbell Costley, Jessica Sutherland and anchor Stephanie Marchuk finished third in 3:28.45.

Giants divers Erin Cullather and Avery Spitz get to travel to Evanston this weekend after qualifying for state as atlarge entrants at the Niles North sectional meet on Nov. 15.

The last Highland Park female (diver or swimmer) to qualify for the state meet was Becky Gutnayer (HPHS, ’06), who finished 28th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.00) in 2004. Gutnayer had joined Allison Fishbein (HPHS, ’05) as qualifiers at the 2003 state meet.

Cullather, a senior, placed sixth (personal-best 423.3 points), while Spitz, a junior, finished eighth (personal-best 401.8) at last weekend’s sectional under the guidance of first-year diving coach Jonathan Roby — a two-time state runner-up (2009, ’10) at Glenbrook North.

Cullather (397.55 points) and Spitz (363.65) finished 2-3 at the Central Suburban League North swimming and diving meet Nov. 8. ■

sports@northshoreweekend.com Leave it to Mark Chang to leave his Loyola Academy girls volleyball team fired up and all tingly on the eve of the biggest match in program history.

The coach and master of motivation had gathered his Ramblers the night before facing Libertyville’s Wildcats in a Class 4A state semifinal at Redbird Arena in Normal Nov. 13, when he dropped the name, Kerri Walsh — the three-time Olympic champion in beach volleyball.

“I told [Chang] Kerri’s entire [bio] when he asked us about her,” LA junior setter Katie Randolph would recall later. “I know a lot about her, and look up to her so much.”

Chang later asked his players if they would like to hear a few messages from Walsh. He saw nothing but nods.

The coach then showed video footage of Walsh speaking … directly to the Ramblers, whose eyes probably neared the size of dirigibles midway through the pep talk. (A member of the Loyola Academy community had helped Chang arrange for the recording of the superstar’s words.)

“Kerri Walsh,” Chang said, “referenced some of the themes we rallied around this year, like ‘Assume nothing’ and ‘Earn everything.’ She also reminded our players not to be intimidated by the environment (at Illinois State University’s home venue] … and that the game of the volleyball is the same, no matter where it’s played.”

Listening to Walsh stirred the Ramblers, especially Randolph.

“She told us to make sure we were calm and to trust our hard work.

“It was the coolest thing I had ever experienced.”

The Ramblers started the second Class 4A semifinal on fire Nov. 14, winning the first set 25-21 and taking an 18-13 lead in the second set.

“Boy, we came out and blitzed them, gave them everything we got,” Chang said.

But Libertyville called a timeout, won 12 of the next 16 points to even the battle and then secured a berth in the state final with a 25-11 decision in the third set.

“Unfortunately our girls got into a little trouble with serve-receive, and in the third set we made some errors we normally don’t make,” Chang said. “Libertyville picked up its game, its level of play.”

Randolph lofted 23 assists and finished with 11 digs — one of three Ramblers who reached double figures in digs.

Junior outside hitter and Glenview resident Christina Reed was a force offensively and defensively, striking a teamhigh 10 kills and tying junior libero Lauren Stadler for team-high honors in digs (13). Outside hitter Olivia Van Zelst and middle Kate Pillion — two more LA juniors — popped for seven and five kills, respectively.

The 5-foot-9 Randolph notched LA’s dig of the weekend, stretching for a “pancake” (the ball glanced off the top of her right hand, inches from the floor) in the middle of the first set of the semifinal. Stadler then passed Randolph’s sensational save to Reed, who hammered a kill to finish the satisfying point.

“Katie’s pancake dig … that was my favorite on-court moment of the weekend,” Chang said, adding his favorite off-court moment was watching his players react to Walsh’s pre-semi speech.

The 6-2 Reed recorded team highs of six kills and eight digs; Stadler bumped five digs; Van Zelst and LA senior Emily Blomquist contributed four digs apiece.

The Ramblers finished with a mark of 27-11 — and fourth in Illinois.

LA hadn’t won a girls volleyball sectional title before the 2014 season.

“We’re competitive, so we were upset with the volleyball aspect of the weekend down there,” Randolph admitted two days after the third-place match. “But we’re not upset at all with how the season went.

“What an experience, for all of us. What a cool season we put together.”

Notable: Benet Academy (41-1) routed Libertyville (35-7) 25-10, 25-10 for its third state championship in four years on Nov. 15. … Illinois Wesleyan University sophomore outside hitter Sarah Udelhofen (Loyola Academy, ’13) caught up with some of her former Ramblers teammates when LA practiced on IWU’s court in Bloomington the day before the LA-Libertyville state semifinal. … Chang’s three-year record as LA’s volleyball coach is 74-33. “We had so much to celebrate this fall, so many great memories,” Chang said. “But I can’t wait to get back to work and set goals for next year.” ■

Loss hurts — but future is bright

sports@northshoreweekend.com Lake Forest High School’s football team wasn’t looking for a crutch — or an excuse.

But no one questions the tough blow the Scouts sustained on the 17th play of their Class 6A state quarterfinal game against host Nazareth Academy on Nov. 15.

There was an eerily identifiable hush along the LF sidelines, when three-year starter Jack Traynor — the heart, soul, spirit and might of this 8-4 squad — suffered a knee injury.

The 6-foot, 224-pound senior inside linebacker was forced to watch most of Saturday’s 54-24 loss from the sidelines.

On crutches.

“You could tell that a big presence (on defense) was missing,” stated Lake Forest senior Virgil Young. “It always helps to have a guy like Jack on the field.”

“Losing him was huge,” Scouts head coach Chuck Spagnoli added. “And I just feel terrible for him.”

Reconciling a season-ending defeat is never easy — especially when the Scouts’ arrow was pointing way up.

“We didn’t get here (state quarterfinals) with smoke and mirrors,” said Spagnoli.

Seeded No. 13 in the Class 6A upper bracket, the Scouts averaged 42 points per game in their two upset wins over No. 4 Belvidere and No. 5 Glenbard South.

But getting past No. 1 Nazareth (12-0) proved to be a little too steep. The Roadrunners, who had the word “Family” stitched across the back of every royal blue jersey, simply are a united bunch playing at a different level.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they wind up winning the whole thing,” Spagnoli said.

Losing to the best is nothing new for the Scouts. Last year, they were eliminated by eventual Class 6A winner Batavia 19-14 in the quarterfinal round. In 2012, they were ousted by the eventual Class 6A state runner-up: Cary-Grove.

Meanwhile, the future remains equator warm and sunny for Lake Forest.

Junior quarterback Danny Carollo put together a terrific postseason. In the three playoff games, the 6-2, 202-pounder completed 42 of 75 passes for 632 yards with six touchdowns.

How does Week 1 compare to Week 12 for Carollo?

“It’s like night and day,” said LF offensive coordinator Phil DeWald. “Danny is just starting to scratch the surface,” DeWald added. “We’re expecting great things from him.”

of his strikes went for 10 yards or more, “He’s got everything you want in a quarterback,” DeWald said. “He’s athletic. He’s tough. He runs well. And he throws the heck out of the ball. He can throw it 60 yards.

“He’s still learning the concepts of the game,” DeWald added. “But you never stop learning those.”

He’s got an edge over most area QBs. The Carollo family is Quarterback U. The lineage at that position is quite remarkable.

His brother, P.J., is a former signal caller at LFHS, who played two seasons at Northwestern. His dad, Paul, lined

up behind center for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, while his uncle, Bill, a former NFL official and current director of officials for the Big Ten conference, also was a college QB. “Danny’s been throwing it for a while,” said DeWald.

He has tutors aplenty.

“P.J. will be up in the stands at our games, and afterwards he’ll come down and critique Danny,” DeWald said.

“And like any brother would do, he’ll let him know that he missed a read or that he should have done this or that. And he’ll do it in a positive way.

“Danny receives a lot of family support.”

He’s also got that neighborhood watch thing going on.

Former LFHS great and Notre Dame starter Tommy Rees lives 10 doors down.

“I had some (throwing) sessions with him last offseason,” said Carollo, who also plays basketball at the school. “I’m hoping to do that again this offseason.

“He’s helped me with my footwork, which is so important for a quarterback,” Carollo said. “And he’s helped me with reading coverages and knowing where to go with the ball.”

Carollo’s toughness is undeniable. He sustained a dislocated finger on his right throwing hand near the end of the regular season.

He reinjured that tender digit late in the first quarter against Nazareth and came out for all of … one play.

The injury didn’t keep Carollo from showing off his big arm. He unloaded a 49-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Mateo Hargitt with 4:29 left in the first half.

“That (TD) pass was a sideline route, and Mateo made a great catch and run,” said Carollo. “He’s a real special guy to have on your team. He was a hot receiver (in the playoffs), and we tried to get the ball to him as often as we could.”

Against Nazareth, Hargitt’s totals were off the charts: six catches, 182 yards. The Carollo and Hargitt duo also connected on a pair of 42-yarders.

And that last 42-yarder to Hargitt late in the fourth quarter was every bit of 60 yards, considering that Carollo scrambled to his right and threw across his body to the other side of the field.

“On that one,” said Carollo. “I put it out there. I gave it all I had.”

His other “hot” receiver was senior Michael Christensen.

This stereotypical possession-receiver hauled in six passes for 45 yards against the Roadrunners.

“Michael has great hands,” Carollo said. “He made things easy for me.”

In the playoff run, Hargitt made 12 catches for 359 yards and 4 TDs, while Christensen caught 13 passes for 116 yards.

“The three of us figured each other out,” said Carollo.

No doubt, one of Carollo’s favorite targets in the future figures to be 6-2, 184-pound junior Brian Doherty. He earned the respect of his coaches and teammates, when he caught a difficult 24-yard slant pass at the Nazareth 2-yard line after dropping a potential TD pass two plays earlier.

“He’s big, and he’s got good hands. He’ll be a good guy to have around,” said Carollo. “But we’ve got a lot of good receivers coming back. It’s a good situation.”

Carollo, who was sacked three times for 36 yards against Nazareth, says the same thing about his offensive line. The Scouts’ O-line was loaded with talented and experienced seniors in Thomas Kennedy, Jack Boyd, John McArthur and George Kohl III. “It was a lot of fun playing with these guys. They played hard,” said Carollo. “Two of those sacks were my fault. I was scrambling a little too much. I got a little too confident in my speed.”

Notable: Before leaving the game with the knee injury and his team trailing 7-0, Traynor was making his usual impact. In two-plus defensive series, he had three tackles and a forced fumble … Traynor wasn’t the only key LF player to go down. Defensive lineman Jaxon Mills missed the second half with a lower body injury. Both had MRIs on Monday. …

Junior outside backer Francis Nicholson was sidelined with a concession. … Sophomore outside linebacker Cal Wonham definitely is a player to watch in coming seasons. The 5-10, 177-pounder finished the game with five tackles to go along with a fumble recovery and blocked PAT attempt. … Junior Matthew Clifford wound up leading the team in tackles with eight. Nicholas Athenson and Harry Larson had six stops each, while Gabe Funk and Jonathan DiValerio had five tackles apiece. … Running back Wes Janeck ended the game with 60 yards on 22 carries but got into the end zone (2-yard run). … Star placekicker and starting cornerback Kyle Gattari was first to put the Scouts on the board with a 44-yard field goal with time expiring in the first quarter. ■
