Former Leo Burnett chief on cloud 999 with debut work

E

nsconced in his apartment, Richard Fizdale — former chairman and CEO of Leo Burnett — talks about his first book.

The setting is appropriate: after all, the coffee-table publication is all about the building he lives in.

“999: A History of Chicago in Ten Stories” (Amp&rsand, Inc.; $79.95) examines the 101-yearold brick structure designed by Wilmette’s Benjamin Marshall. The building serves as a bookend for East Lake Shore Drive; the Drake Hotel, a short walk away, is the other.

Filled with vintage photographs, illustrations, engaging stories and more, the full color book (available at the Lake Forest Bookstore, The Book Stall in Winnetka, and The Book Bin in Northbrook) was not envisioned as such.

“It started out as a brochure — then the project exploded,” says Fizdale, who will be appearing at Dickinson Hall in Lake Forest on Wednesday, Oct. 15 to talk about his work.

The septuagenarian says the biggest surprise during his research — which started in 2010 — was the long shooting war in the area known as Streeterville, the new land mass created when Lake Shore Drive was built. The property on which 999 now sits was being claimed by George Wellington Streeter in 1910 when Ogden Trevor McClurg and Stuart Gore Shepard bought the oddly shaped lot from an attorney.

The building’s a special spot for a boy who grew up barely above the poverty line.

“I love the place,” he says. “It’s well-designed, wellbuilt and in the heart of Chicago.”

No end in sight on ash tree removals The emerald ash borer has decimated the ash tree population on the North Shore.

Empty branches, felled trees, naked stumps on just about every block: This has been a terrible year for trees.

Since June alone, Lake Forest’s forestry department has identified more than 5,600 public and private ash trees that need to come down in addition to the thousands of trees the city has already lost since the emerald ash borer was detected on June Terrace in 2009. In Lake Bluff, where ash accounts for about 10 percent of the public forest, 600 trees await the buzz saw.

The emerald ash borer problem has been building since the invasive pest arrived in Michigan in 2002 and spread to Illinois a few years later. But the visual of so many tree stumps on streets on the North Shore recently is jarring.

“What’s happening now is no surprise, but we knew it would be a shock to homeowners — and that is exactly what is happening,” said Kathie Hayden, plant information specialist at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.

Last winter’s bitter weather and droughts from previous summers have stressed sugar maples. Dutch elm disease continues to threaten elms, and other fungal diseases

are affecting spruce and pines to the point that many are dead or dying.

The emerald ash borer problem is placing financial pressure on North Shore municipalities that pride themselves on their Tree City USA status.

“Unfortunately ash removals are outpacing the funds available,” says Peter Gordon, forester for the City of Lake Forest.

He said the forestry staff was unable to meet its goal of removing 600 trees a year on its own because of other commitments, such as the BMW Championship Golf Tournament. As a result, Lake Forest has contracted with Kinnucan and others to remove 232 public property trees in 2014 and 2015. In addition, Lake Forest is spending nearly $30,000 annually to chemically treat 650 ash trees in 2014 and 2015.

Homeowners are feeling the stress of tree-removal fees that can range from $500 for a small ash tree to more than $1,200 for a huge one. And that’s when the tree is still showing signs of life. Removal of failing or dead trees can cost 50 percent more, says T.J. Blockhus, arborist at Kinnucan.

“The only time we treat them is if we see an ash tree with at least 75 percent of its full canopy,” he says. “Once the tree is showing signs it has the borer it’s too late to treat.”

John Houde, Glencoe’s Building and Zoning administrator, says the 1,185 ash trees on the village’s public parkways in 2010 have seen a dramatic drop.

The number has reached 758 — and it’s plummeting.

“This summer and past winter were when most of those were removed,” says Houde.

Though other communities around the North Shore have adopted a fast removal strategy, clearing out dead ash trees as soon as they are identified, Glencoe has

not. While that was an effective strategy to curb the spread of the Dutch elm disease — and the forestry department of Evanston benefits to this day for doing so —Houde says this doesn’t apply to the emerald ash borer, which can lay up to 200 eggs within the crevices of the tree’s bark and hatch within two weeks.

The emerald ash borer was first discovered in Wilmette during the summer of 2006. The village has removed and replanted hundreds of ash trees that were confirmed infested with the beetle.

Unlike Dutch elm disease, the emerald ash borer infestation “has the potential to completely remove all native ash

with devastating economic and ecological impact,” warns Galen Gates, associate professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology and a horticulture specialist. “It is the most destructive and economically costly forest insect to ever invade North America.”

When Cliff Miller would watch the migratory patterns of hawks from the observatory tower at Lake Forest College years ago, the ash trees would obscure everything: buildings, cars, any semblance of society.

Now, he worries they may be extinct in our lifetimes.

“A whole village can lose every ash it has,” notes Miller. “We’re losing a significant element of our forests.” ■

Skin salon looks to be on cutting edge

When Magdalena Wesolowski moved with her husband and their young family from Poland 22 years ago, they stayed in the western suburbs for about half a year before Lake Michigan’s enticement proved too strong.

They’ve been living in Lake Bluff ever since.

“I love the area we’re in and love the

people,” says Wesolowski, who sees women of all ages at her eponymous Magdalena European Med Spa in Highwood.

Two years ago, three women gathered on a mission to develop a salon. Two of them were hairdressers who had been working on the North Shore for more than 20 years. The third was Wesolowski, boasting a career working at Georgette Klinger and Elizabeth Arden and with a North Shore plastic surgeon before developing her own approach to skincare.

The two hairdressers, Diane Davos and Jackie Shear, along with Wesolowski created their dream under one roof, calling it JStrand (European Med Spa is within JStrand).

Wesolowski, who received a master’s degree in education from the University of Silesia — one of the largest institutions of higher education in Europe — is able to act as both doctor and teacher for skin treatments.

“I think having a strong background in education has fueled my desire to always be researching the newest, most effective techniques and products,” she emphasizes.

“My philosophy is not only to provide the service but to educate my clients on how to use products most effectively, keeping their skin looking young and healthy the longest.”

The skin, made up of several layers, is the largest organ in the human body. The dermal and epidermal layers are constantly bombarded by UVA radiation, pollution and stress.

Wesolowski offers an in-depth skin analysis before tailoring a facial experience customized to each client. Her facials combine European and French massage techniques for muscle stimulation and more.

Winnetka resident Dr. Jason Koh is director of the NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute. He is also chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem.

Reading: Recently I’ve been reading a book called “The Conquest of the Incas.” Earlier I had the opportunity to give some talks in Peru, and I try to get a little of the history of a place before I visit. It talks about how a small group of conquistadors from Spain interacted with the massive Inca empire. It’s a fascinating book, a lot of interesting information about sociology, how the two different cultures clash.

Listening: In my car I’ve been listening to streaming radio, and I’ve been listening to the English Beat, a band from when I was growing up in the ‘80s — it has some reggae and ska influences.

Watching: My wife and I have been watching “House of Cards,” which is fun since I worked in the D.C. area at the National Institutes of Health for a while.

Following: One of the things I followed over the summer is the World Cup — that was a huge story, particularly because I was in Latin America. I’ve been taking care of the Chicago Fire for seven or eight years now as the orthopaedic surgeon and team physician, so I’ve gotten to know some players both for the national team and for the other countries.

Activity: I’m a clinician, so I see a lot of patients myself, sports injuries and complex shoulder problems. But part of my role has been to take a dedicated group of nurses, physicians, and staff and bring them together to get the best quality musculoskeletal care for the community. There’s about 90 surgeons involved with the institute, and we can

offer a full spectrum of treatment to our patients.

We’ve also done award-winning research.

The North Shore is a great place to live and work and raise a family — for me it’s been very personally and professionally rewarding to work at NorthShore.

I’ve very excited for what we’re doing with the institute, because we can bring world-class quality to our own community.

Eating: We like to grill, and actually one of the things I really enjoy is Korean barbeque short ribs, galbi. They have a lot of flavor, and it’s something I grew up with as a kid. It reminds me of good times and picnics in the summer.

It’s a little bit embarrassing — it’s something that happened to me right after I graduated medical school. I was newly minted, an intern at MassGeneral, one of Harvard’s teaching hospitals.

It was a busy day, and I turned to one of the nurses and started barking orders. She turned to me and said, “Good morning, Dr. Koh.” That made me stop in my tracks and realize that so much of how we work on a team is making sure you express the respect you have for others, and taking a couple of seconds to say good morning can have a huge difference in how you work with other people. ■

When buying a dress buoys non-profits ■ by simon murray Ellen Stirling is cut from a different cloth.

It might have something to do with her family. Her uncle was none other than Condé Montrose Nast, who turned Vogue magazine into an international fashion powerhouse.

But while Stirling looks to him as someone who took a unique message to a growing female audience, she reserves a special amount of reverence for her grandmother.

“My father’s mother loved to shop,” she says. That impulse didn’t dissipate; instead, Stirling’s grandmother — Margaret Baxter Foster, a Chicago socialite — capitalized on her tastes by founding the Lake Forest Shop in 1922.

One of Stirling’s ideas that has grown over time to encompass the entire town of Lake Forest —promoting giving back — is

“When we started, I was trying to think of a neat way that [the Lake Forest Shop], could give back to the community in a meaningful way,” says Stirling. “But what is that? What is meaningful to this community?”

As young girl in her grandmother’s shop to her role as current owner, Stirling had noticed there were plenty of not-for-profits in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff — and yet nothing to unify them and provide exposure.

Shop Your Cause was born. Since being created more than a decade ago, it has raised more than $200,000 for organizations that are both staples of the community and newcomers alike, such as the Deer Path Art League, Lake Forest Preservation Foundation, Citadel Theatre, Lake Forest Symphony, Bernie’s Book Bank, Lake County Community Foundation, and Ragdale, a nonprofit artists’ community located on architect Howard Van Doren Shaw’s country estate.

“What’s great about Shop Your Cause is it raises awareness about non-profits that otherwise would not get that amount of public attention,” notes Chris Keller, donor relations manager for Ragdale. “We have benefited from the press, public exposure, and it has brought exciting new donors onto our campus.”

The celebration that begins on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Lake Forest Shop will honor a woman from each of the organizations. Recognizing

Corporate chef keeps Morton’s a cut above ■ by katie rose mceneely

Chris Rook is the corporate chef for Morton’s The Steakhouse.

How did you start cooking? I started cooking when I was just a kid — my mother was a phenomenal cook. I played football and baseball, but one of my favorite things was cooking with my mom. She was an incredible baker.

Years cooking? I’m 52 now and I’ve been cooking since I was 17, so 35 years.

What made you decide to become a professional chef? I think that experience with my mother and cooking for my family. My mother never thought it would amount to anything; she wanted me to go to college, so I went to college for two years, but I told her: I want to be a chef. I did well in college, it just wasn’t where I was happy being.

Best recipe tweak? I think the best trick is to keep it simple — don’t try to wow the world, just make good-tasting food with good basics and work up from there.

Signature dish? I’ve been working for Morton’s for 25 years and I have a lot of things I’ve introduced.

They have a dish called “Chicken Christopher” on the menu, which I didn’t name. It’s garlic beurre blanc, and everybody seems to love it. It’s very good, but it’s pretty normal, and it’s been on the menu for 20 years.

Worthwhile gadget? A lemon squeezer.

Favorite condiment? I love horseradish. I try to mix it in wherever I can.

Favorite fruit or vegetable? I love mangos, avocados, tomatoes.

Least favorite food: Chili. Bad chili. People try to make it too hot or spicy — it’s supposed to be a blend of flavors.

Recipe: Pan-Roasted Halibut with

Vegetables and Brown Butter Caper Sauce Cut the 8 ounces carrots into 3-inch long sections. Then, stand the sections on end and trim the side to form a square . Carefully cut down on the carrot cut slices approximately 1/16th of each other and cut “matchsticks”. Repeat with 8 ounces white and light green parts of leeks.

Cut 8 ounces of 3-inch asparagus tips lengthwise, into thirds, or halves if small asparagus. Place 3 tablespoons clarified butter in a 12-inch sauté pan over medium high heat. Season 4 8-ounce centercut skinned halibut filets on both sides with salt and black pepper.

When the butter just begins to smoke, place the halibut, skin side removed up, into the pan. Cook for approximately 45 seconds, until golden brown, and flip it over to the other side. Place the pan in a 500-degree oven and bake for 4 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillet.

Remove the pan from the oven. Set the cooked halibut to the side.

Wipe out the sauté pan and place it back on the burner over medium heat. Add 4 tablespoons unsalted butter and 4 tablespoons drained capers to the pan. Sauté until the butter starts to barely brown around the edges of the pan, about 45 seconds. Add 4 ounces white wine; swirl the pan to mix the wine and the butter. Reduce for about 20 seconds and remove from the flame.

Meanwhile, bring the salted water to a boil. Add the carrots and the asparagus to the boiling water. Cook for approximately 20 seconds.

Then add the leeks to the water. Cook for another 20 seconds.

Remove the vegetables from the water, drain well and center approx.

1 ⁄4 of the vegetables on each of your serving plates. Place the halibut on top of the vegetables. Spoon brown butter caper sauce over the halibut.

“I like to go down there and work on my shot when it doesn’t feel right.” | Evan Boudreaux In their place is something new: the home court.

“It’s a different world now than it was 20 years ago,” says Pat Walker, president and owner of Sport Court Midwest. “Moms want to know where their kids are, who they’re with, and what they’re doing.”

The home court is a modern luxury, albeit one without any glitzy trappings. Walker’s Sport Court is a customizable suspended flooring system, designed to offer more forgiveness than any other athletic surface. It can manifest itself in many different forms — a basketball gym, a tennis court, a dodgeball arena, a roller hockey rink — or it can be all of them at once.

“There’s another room there, another living area,” Walker says.

“It gives the family a place to bond together — a place to bond with relatives and friends.”

One Sport Court owner, a Kenilworth mother of three, says she and her family play a game of “pig” in her basement basketball gym every night before the kids go to bed.

“I feel like the kids in Chicago or the Midwest are inside in the wintertime a lot, so it really is a luxury to have [a Sport Court] in our basement,” she says. “Every kid in the neighborhood is at my house every weekend.”

Lake Forest High School basketball standout Evan Boudreaux, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound Division I prospect, practices in a lower-level half-court at his home in Lake Forest.

“I like to go down there and work on my shot when it doesn’t feel right,” says Boudreaux, who averaged nearly 25 points a game for the Scouts this past season. “No shot is a bad shot when you’re practicing it.”

The installation of home courts is on the rise. Dave VanderVeen of WeBuildSports.com told The Wall Street Journal he used to install two or three indoor sports rooms a year. In 2013 he built about a dozen — including a full-size baseball pitching range and gymnastics room for $170,000.

At the low end, courts are usually a five-figure investment and can take up 1,000 to 3,000 square feet. At a place like former Chicago Bull legend Michael Jordan’s house in Highland Park — which features a full-size basketball court — the price can soar far higher.

By nature of being in the house, courts promote an active lifestyle for the families who own them, challenging the norms of an increasingly technology-driven culture. More than that, though, they allow parents to capture the memories generations of kids have left behind — like a stray jacket in public parks.

FORWARD THINKING New position has been a goal mine for New Trier’s Gill ■ by bill mclean

sports@northsoreweekend.com With a St. Charles East Saint draped all over him in a soccer match last month, New Trier senior forward Duncan Gill somehow managed to control a ball while falling — and dealing with an unforgiving calf cramp.

But before hitting the turf in a Northside College Showcase clash at New Trier on Sept. 4, the 6-foot-2 Trevian blasted a shot past a startled goalkeeper.

“That goal, along with the other one he scored that day, epitomizes who Duncan is as a player … a grinding, gritty, fiercely competitive player,” NT soccer coach Wes Molyneaux says of Gill’s memorable efforts in a 4-2 loss.

“He stayed on his feet long enough, while being pushed around.

“And then he found the back of the net,” the coach adds.

It’s been a recurring theme this fall, Gill fraying twine after burning a keeper. The Kenilworth resident struck for his 14th goal of the season — to go with his six assists — in NT’s 2-0 defeat of visiting Glenbrook South on Sept. 27.

His numbers for the entire season last fall: 1 goal, 0 assists.

But that was when Gill, an FC United club player, was a center-back and an occasional outside back for a team that lost 1-0 to eventual Class 3A state runner-up Wheeling in a sectional semifinal.

“Duncan,” Molyneaux says, “came up to me [in the preseason] and told me, ‘I think I’d be able to be more helpful as a forward.’ I said, ‘Yeah, let’s look toward that and see where you might fit in.’

“I thought he’d be the first forward off the bench for us, but he ended up winning a battle for a starting job.”

Gill is one of the Trevians’ six tireless, savvy forwards — and one of three with a height of at least 6-2 — for a 12-2-2 squad through Sept. 27.

The other five forwards: 6-3 junior Spencer Farina, 6-2 senior Tommy Belliel, 6-0 senior Jackson Dunn, 5-10 junior Michael Gallo and 5-7 sophomore Matt Gallo.

“The chemistry our forwards have when we’re out there is very good,” says Gill, who used his hops and his head — off a picturesque throw-in from Farina — to tally the second goal against Glenbrook South from about nine yards out. “All of us want to win so much.

“I didn’t expect [his high goal total after 16 matches].

But I’ll take it, as long as it’s helping our team.”

Another wonderful total that will continue to climb this autumn is the money raised by “Kick Cancer,” a cause started by Gill and his NT teammates in 2013. It generated $5,400 for the American Cancer Society last year, and this year’s figure is already at $10,000 — $5,000 short of the organization’s goal.

Several of the program’s players headed to DePaul University on Sept. 28 to receive $1,000 at the half of the PepsiCo Showdown final between Morton and Lyons Township. The figure marked a portion of the Showdown’s annual donation to teams’ charities.

New Trier’s soccer boys earmarked all of it to “Kick Cancer.”

The inspiration behind the “Kick Cancer” endeavor is Gill’s mother, Debbie, a cancer survivor in her 12th year of remission.

“My mom,” Gill says, “never gives up, never ever. That’s

New Trier senior midfielder Jamey Minturn has known Gill for most of his life as a soccer teammate. They first passed a ball to each other in an organized match when they were 8.

“Duncan has always played a pivotal role on teams we’ve been on together,” says Minturn, who notched his third assist of the season on senior Tanner Walsh’s goal against Glenbrook South last weekend. “He works incredibly hard, and he’s always full of energy. We love Duncan’s energy; we feed off it.

“I can’t say enough about how much his effort means to our team each game. And he’s a really kind kid, always glowing.”

Gill taps his sweet side to the side and loses his disarming smile as booters hit the pitch on a Match Day. It’s time to win headers, discard defenders, score goals, feed passes to teammates.

“Duncan,” Molyneaux sums, “is pretty funny, somebody who likes to keep things light in the locker room.

Senior midfielder Connor Rife provided a pair of assists, and senior midfielder Steven Childs delivered the other. … Gill netted two goals and assisted on the other in NT’s 3-1 victory at Maine South on Sept. 23.

Michael Gallo scored the visitors’ other goal in an CSL South opener. NT’s coaching staff credited a “hockey assist” to junior defender/midfielder Jacob Moskowitz on Gill’s first goal against the Hawks. A Moskowitz pass preceded Farina’s assist in the sequence. … NT reached the PepsiCo Showdown semifinals by edging Lane Tech 1-0 on Sept. 18. Eventual Showdown runner-up Lyons Township topped NT 1-0 in a semifinal on Sept. 20. … NT defeated Wheeling 3-1 in a Northside College Showcase match on the home turf Sept. 3, avenging a 2013 sectional semifinal loss. Tommy Quirk led the offense with four goals and two assists in the three games.

“Tommy has been on fire of late,” said HP coach Blake Novotny.

On Sept. 23, Quirk, Marco Juarez and Josue Ramirez scored the goals as the Giants (7-3-4) defeated Maine West 3-0. Quirk, Zach Kohn (2) and Juan Marban were credited with assists.

Lake Forest: Keegan Kullby scored twice to spark the Scouts (6-8-1) to a 3-2 victory over Lane Tech on Sept. 23. Daniel Hanson tallied the team’s other goal.

ROAMING THE SIDELINES FOOTBALL Loyola: The Ramblers put up 28 points in the opening quarter and cruised to their fourth win of the season by blasting host St. Ignatius 55-13 on Sept. 27. The Ramblers (4-1) will host unbeaten Providence Catholic on Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. The Celtics have wins against Joliet Catholic, Minooka, Mt. Carmel, Marmion Academy and St. Rita.

In its Week 5 win, LA was led by running back Dara Laja (78 rushing yards, 2 TDs) and wide receiver Owen Buscaglia (4 catches, 75 yards, 2 TDs). John Saliba (1 yard), Jack Loper (40 yards) and Danny Gaughan (20 yards) also scored rushing TDs, while Thomas Dreher scored on a 15-yard fumble return.

New Trier: The Trevians (5-0), who were scheduled to play Maine South on Oct. 2, went up 14-0 with 9:53 left in the first quarter and never looked back in a resounding 49-14 win over host Waukegan on Sept. 7. Running back Kevin Mulhern (14 carries, 109 yards) opened the scoring with 7-yard run. A few moments later, Colin Casas blocked a punt and teammate Jack Paschen picked up the live ball and scored on a 21-yard return.

NT’s first-half scoring also included an 8-yard run by Mulhern, a 6-yard run by Caleb Roth (7-72) and a 17-yard reception by Scott Hammes from Clay Czyzynski (3-6-0, 76 yards). Casas (21 yards) and Roth (30 yards) added TD runs in the second half.

“We came in here and took care of business,” said NT head coach Brian Doll.

The defensive stars included Casas (6 tackles, sack), Andrew Hauser (11-yard sack, 2 tackles for loss), Will Francke (sack, tackle for loss), Francis Fay (interception), Tim Fox (INT) and Devin Murphy (2 tackles for loss).

STICK NATION FIELD HOCKEY Lake Forest: Sheridan Weiss scored on an assist by Lindsay Close to give the Scouts a 1-0 victory over Glenbrook South on Sept. 27.

GIRLS GOLF Giant Invite: Oh, wow. Kelli Ono came up with a quite a performance at this six-team meet at Sunset Valley on Sept. 27.

The Highland Park senior shot even-par 72 to earn medalist honors by 11 strokes over Deerfield’s Elyse Emerzian. Teammate Zoe Zirlin took eighth with an 89.

Loyola defeated HP 344-361 for team honors. The foursome of Madison Banas, Colleen Huffman, Megan Mitchell and Kellie McCabe shot 86s to share third-place honors.

Loyola and HP also squared off on Sept. 23 at Highland Park Country Club. Led by Nicole Wetoska (39), Margaret Hickey (40), Blake Yaccino (42) and Huffman (43), the Ramblers won 164-181. Ono (36), Danielle Cohen (46), Nicole Berardi (59) and Zirlin (50) scored for HP. Grant Invite:: Senior Matthew Mekaelian (5th, 16:21.11) and junior Mark Myers (6th, 16.21.55) were the lead runners for Lake Forest in this meet at Camp Henry Horner on Sept. 27. The Scouts placed seventh in the team standings with 174 points.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Palatine Invite: In a photo finish, New Trier’s Mimi Smith ran a 17:22.6 and just missed beating Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien (17:22.3) in this 185-runner meet at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve on Sept. 27. The Trevians (101 points) placed third in the team standings behind the host Pirates (72) and Yorkville (90).

Loyola was 13th (355).

NT’s Cara Keleher took 14th (18:01), while fellow sophomores Grace Fagen and Caroline Fix came in 20th and 27th, respectively. LA’s Kathryn House was 28th.

Grant Invite: Paced by Emma Milburn (3rd, 19:32.42) and Katie Condon (4th, 19:35.99), Lake Forest captured top honors (52 points) in this 16-team meet at Camp Henry Horner on Sept. 27. They finished 20 points better than Vernon Hills. The Scouts also received solid work from Brett Chody (8th), Etta Eckerstrom (18th), Kelsey Schmidt (19th) and Hannah Flagstad (20th).

POOLSIDE GIRLS SWIMMING Highland Park: Erin Cullather and Sam Lask were two of the bright spots for the Giants in their 119-67 setback to Evanston on Sept. 26. Cullather scored a 221.10 to win diving by seven points. Lask checked in with a 1:12.98 to take first in the 100 breaststroke.

New Trier: Mia Haggerty and Hope Hayward were double winners as the Trevians topped Glenbrook North 128-58 on Sept. 26.

Haggerty won the 200 free (1:56.30) and 500 free (5:11.66), while Hayward took first in the 200 IM (2:12.92) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.11). In addition to all three relays, NT’s other winners were Morgan Conley in the 50 free (25.14), Dominique Iida in diving (211.80), Julia Green in the 100 free (54.55) and Kathryne Tao in the 100 back (1:00.88).

The Trevians also picked up a win against Hinsdale Central 114-72 on Sept. 27. The winners included Hayward in the 100 fly (1:00.47), Haggerty in the 100 free (55.02), Green in the 500 free (5:18.79), Tao in the 100 back (1:03.09), Conley in the 50 free (25.26), Samantha Adams in the 200 free (1:59.48), Vivian Wu in the 200 IM (2:18.18) and Emily George in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.84).

DROP SHOTS GIRLS TENNIS Prospect Invite: New Trier ended up with runner-up honors (64 points) behind Stevenson (74 points) at the Prospect Fall Classic on Sept. 27. Sophomores Michelle Buyer and Katie Lofdahl went 4-0 to take first place at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 singles, senior Taylor Tamblyn lost a three-setter to Stevenson’s Kendall Kirsch. At No. 2, NT’s Cammy Frei lost in two sets to Stevenson’s Zoe Taylor. The Trevians had two doubles teams advance to the finals: Catherine McKinnon and Laura Swenson at No. 1 and Tess Lubin and Nikki Katz at No. 2.

Highland Park placed third (48 points) in this 16-team tourney. After edging NT’s Nina Leutz 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 in the semifinal round, Devin Davidson wound up taking second at No. 3 singles. The Giants also had a runner-up finish at No. 4 doubles with Emily Shimanovsky and Sammi Beerman Loyola took sixth place (32 points). Freshman Maggie Hines finished third at first singles.

AT THE NET GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Loyola/New Trier: Led by Olivia Van Zelst (6 kills) and Katie Randolph (20 assists), the Ramblers topped New Trier 25-17, 25-18 on Sept. 26 to run their record to 13-3 overall.

On Sept. 25, LA defeated St. Ignatius in three sets. Van Zelst led the team with 12 kills.

Lake Forest/New Trier: The Trevians (9-7) topped LF 25-20, 25-23 on Sept. 29. The Scouts received solid play from Lucy Ward (5 kills, 3 blocks), Ashley Williams (5 blocks), Claire Torkelsen (5 blocks), Jenna Dethlefsen (5 kills) and Meghan McGrail (5 kills).

DELIVERING THE GOODS

Garrity continues to be a steady voice — and player — for Scouts ■

sports@northsoreweekend.com Right around this time two years ago, Lake Forest High School golfer Jack Garrity started to jot down thoughts for a speech he hoped to deliver to his teammates on the eve of the Class 3A state meet in Bloomington.

The Scouts — the reigning state champs at the time — hadn’t qualified for the state meet when Garrity first put words to paper.

“Then I kept adding to it (during the postseason),” Garrity recalls.

The 2012 Scouts varsity squad made it to state. It featured three juniors, two seniors and a sophomore.

The soph?

He also happened to be the speechmaker.

“I still have what he wrote, what he said in front of his teammates that night,” LF coach Jim Matheson says. “It’s a full page, and it’s in one of my files. It’s in my ‘Good’ file … it’s a thick file.

“What he said to his teammates [in a hotel room] was funny and serious,” the coach adds.

Now a senior and the Scouts’ top golfer, Garrity wasn’t a typical sophomore back then. Typical sophomores on varsity golf teams laden with upperclassmen usually try hard, say little and opt to blend in with the scenery at courses.

“I felt very comfortable around that group,” recalls Garrity, who helped the Scouts place fourth (308) with a four-overpar 76 at the McDermand Invite at Lake Bluff Golf Club on Sept. 27. “I got to know a lot of my teammates through my brother [Matt Garrity, a member of that state-title crew in 2011 and a 2012 LFHS grad], and I’d been playing golf with many of them for years.

“I gave the speech because I wanted to relax the guys, get them pumped up.”

18-hole test. Garrity shot an 82, tying then-senior Drew Takacs for the fourthbest score among Scouts qualifiers.

Speaking of scores in the 80s, the 6-foot-2 Garrity has carded only one such score this fall.

“That ’70s Show” isn’t just a former TV series starring Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis; it’s also what Garrity has been producing via steady rounds of golf since August.

His 72 at the Wheeling Invite at Chevy

Chase Country Club on Sept. 20 missed medalist honors by a stroke. Garrity took seventh with a 73 at the Deerfield Invite at Twin Orchard CC in Long Grove on Sept.

6. Five days after his weather-shortened 35 for the champion Scouts at the Lake County Invite at Fox Lake CC on Aug. 25, he chipped in with a 76 for runner-up LF at the Buffalo Grove Invite at Buffalo Grove Golf Course.

On Sept. 23, Garrity’s medalist round of 35 edged senior teammate Mac Montagne’s

36 at the talent-packed Highland Park Quad at Northmoor CC. LFHS finished runner-up (153) behind New Trier (152) and ahead of Loyola Academy (156) and HPHS (159).

“Jack has been a huge contributor for us this season,” Montagne says. “It’s been nice being able to rely on his low scores.”

A chunk of Garrity’s success this fall can be attributed to a new swing he developed under the guidance of a teaching pro at Northmoor CC. “I now hinge up more on my backswing,” Garrity says, demonstrating his new backswing — without a club. “It has helped me … a lot. My swing is much more consistent than it had been. The pro I’ve been working with is intense, pretty vocal. You can’t slack off around him.

“I like taking lessons from him because I know they will help me in the long run.”

Matheson, meanwhile, likes writing Garrity’s name on his lineup card on days of duals and invites for a variety of reasons.

“Jack hits it a long way, and his game is a controlled game,” the coach says of a teen who likes to reel in fish when he’s not shooting for birdies and eagles. “He’s not too emotional of a player; he’s eventempered. And right now he’s playing as well as anybody, nice and easy.”

Garrity’s disposition between rounds of golf is sub-70-score impressive and mid70-degree-temps pleasant.

“Outgoing, always polite,” Matheson says. “Everybody likes him; teachers like him. He makes people laugh, and he gets along with everybody.”

Making an IMPACT

LF’s Janeck racks up yards using an aggressive running style ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northsoreweekend.com Senior inside linebacker Jack Traynor is the face of the 2014 Lake Forest High School football team.

He’s got the look. He’s got the presence. And the three-year starter, a future Division I player, is having another unbelievable season.

Senior running back Wes Janeck, meanwhile, has become the heart and soul of the Scouts. His health ordeal — a rare heart condition (myocarditis) — kept him on the sidelines for the entire 2013 football season.

You can tell that he’s bent on making up for lost time.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder, who verbally committed to play men’s lacrosse at the University of Maryland as a boy his sophomore year, plays the game with dogged determination. He’s relentless with the football in his hands.

The Scouts, who were scheduled to play at Warren on Oct. 4, have a true offensive game breaker in the

multi-talented Janeck. In his team’s 29-20 win over visiting Libertyville on Sept. 26, he managed to combine speed, shiftiness and power to roll up 148 rushing yards, His most spectacular play that night came on a 71-yard kick return.

It belonged in the oohs and ahs category.

“Pretty good,” said Lake Forest head coach Chuck Spagnoli. “That was pretty good.”

Janeck called it fun — and credited a teammate for the touchdown.

“To be able to do that you have to have some great blocks,” said Janeck. “Virgil (Young) made a great one for me. We’re out there, and he’s telling me to follow him.”

However, the play that set him apart came early in the fourth quarter. He fought through the line by being slippery and evasive, shifted into a faster gear and then smashed and steamrolled a Libertyville cornerback at the end of a 32-yard run.

No doubt, it will be an instant classic in the team’s film room.

“I like being the hitter,” Janeck

said. “I want to come out on the right side of a tackle.”

“He finished it the right way,” said Spagnoli. “He earned every inch he got on that play.”

Entering the Warren game, Janeck had rushed for more than 100 yards in three of his team’s first five games. He had a pair of TD runs against Libertyville: 19 and 7 yards. His five-game totals include 476 rushing yards and nine TDs. “What Wes has is great vision,” said Spagnoli. “When it’s time to make the right cut, he does it.”

Being aggressive has served him well on both lacrosse and football fields.

“The two sports work perfectly together,” said Janeck, a first-team all-state pick as a middie in 2014. “I play them in a similar way. I’m glad they’re played in different seasons (fall and spring).”

Giants’ Brown a natural to play the role of middle linebacker ■ by bill mclean

sports@northsoreweekend.com The most grateful football player on Adams Field at Deerfield High School last weekend had to be Highland Park High School senior middle linebacker Aaron Brown.

When HP beat rival Deerfield 17-6 in 2013, Brown had recorded as many tackles as his triplets, Austin and Allison, had.

A devastating knee injury in the preseason sidelined Aaron Brown for the Giants’ entire 7-3 season in 2013, including a playoff game.

“This is the best feeling in the world,” an appreciative Brown said after HP’s 17-14 defeat of Deerfield on Sept.

26. Minutes earlier, HP’s inspired defensive unit (only 59 points allowed in five games) secured the taut clash and Central Suburban League North opener for both squads when it stopped a Warriors ball carrier three yards short of a first down on a fourth-and-eight play.

Sporting a sweat-soaked, untucked jersey No. 4, the 6-foot, 205-pound captain oozed “middle linebacker”: tough, relentless, hard-hitting, short-cropped hair, unequivocal leader, most likely to name a dog “Butkus.”

Brown’s season-long feeling last fall: disappointment, interrupted regularly with sheer determination during his rehab sessions.

He never got to play a single down in an official game last fall, after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Giants’ intrasquad game in August.

And that’s why Brown cherishes every single down he’s a part of this season.

“First play from scrimmage, a read-option,” Brown said, recalling the start of a sequence that wiped out his junior season.

“I went to tackle a running back. My first thought was, ‘I must have hyperextended my knee.’ ” The helmet of a teammate had inadvertently collided with Brown’s knee on the play.

The helmet won.

“I’d prefer not to tell you whose helmet it was,” Brown said politely. “The teammate who did it … he doesn’t even know.”

Those who know Brown — also a reliable tight end — know football is as vital to him as his heart is; his beating organ might very well be held together by football laces.

“He’s a man out there, an animal,” HP senior defensive Teddy Sutker said. “Nothing means more to him than football does.”

“He’s 100-percent football,” said Giants senior running back Cole Greenberg, who had 18 rushes for 102 yards against Deerfield. “He’ll be excited and up all night, thinking about this.”

“Aaron,” added HP coach Hal Chiodo, “is old-school, like I am. He’s serious about football, serious about school, serious about everything. What he did last year and this year, to make sure he was ready for his senior season, was work … Aaron worked his tail off in the offseason. He was the first to arrive in the weight room and the last to leave it.”

Brown’s football career started somewhat awkwardly in the sixth grade. On the day of his first organized game, he put his thigh pads over his knees and his knee pads

over his thighs.

“My coach,” Brown said with a laugh, “pointed that out to me. He also helped me [switch the sets of pads before kickoff].”

But his coach didn’t have to alter the way Brown played in the early going. One of Brown’s first clean hits in youth football — as a running back — sidelined a safety (bloody nose) for a quarter.

“What I’ve always liked about football is that you get to feel every emotion when you play it,” said Brown, whose older brother, Alex (HPHS, 2010), played center for Giants football teams. “Without a doubt it’s the most fun activity I’ve ever done, and I’ve always preferred going against teams that like to run a lot … old-school teams.

“I love the team aspect, too, knowing you’re out there playing with, and for, 40 brothers.”

Brown’s father, Ed, was an all-league linebacker for none other than Deerfield HS in the late 1970s, and his uncle, Bob Brown, caught the winning touchdown pass as a tight end in Deerfield’s 14-7 defeat of Rockford Boylan in the 1975 Class 5A state title game.

“I was happy that my dad sat in our fans’ bleachers [at Deerfield last weekend],” Brown said.

What thrilled Brown after last year’s knee injury was the constant encouragement he received from his family, Chiodo and his teammates. Even HPHS football alumni contacted Brown to offer their support and lift his spirits.

“Coach [Chiodo] was incredible,” said Brown, who would have battled as a weak-side linebacker for the Giants last fall. “Every day he asked me, ‘How are you doing?’ And he made sure I felt I was still a part of the team. I was going through so many mixed emotions, dealing with the injury and watching football when I wanted to play it so badly. It gnawed away at me.

“So many people wanted to make sure my mind stayed strong.”

Many believe Brown belongs on a college football roster for four years. He plans to conduct an ardent search for a Division III college after the season, with film help and guidance from Giants offensive coordinator/college counselor Bill Morrison.

“Aaron is a great leader, the best captain, somebody who absolutely loves football,” said Giants senior wideout Luke Norcia, whose 36-yard TD reception from senior Sam Nevers (14-of-22 passes for 179 yards) put HP (5-0, 1-0 in the CSL North) up 16-14 at 5:06 of the fourth quarter last weekend. “What happened to him last year was sad.

“Now he’s back and in the middle for us, playing great every day.”■
