Restaurateur is in the swim of things

A

t age 39, longtime Highwood restaurateur Gabe Viti learned to swim.

Seems like the lessons took — after all, a dozen years after figuring out the freestyle stroke, last month he swam across the English Channel.

“The only challenge was the jellyfish. I got stung 27 times,” says Viti, who walked onto a beach and yelled “Vive la France!” 15 hours and 50 minutes after setting off from Dover, England.

To prepare, Viti swam every day during the summer of 2013 in Lake Michigan, even when waves reached 12 feet. This past winter, he rented a home in St. Petersburg, Fla. two doors away from the Gulf of Mexico. With a cup on a string, his girlfriend fed him from a friend’s boat to mimic the Channel undertaking. He later travelled to San Francisco to get used to the cold water bubbling below Golden Gate Bridge. When he arrived in Dover in July, he was set.

“I was 100 percent confident I had trained enough and that I was ready mentally and physically,” says Viti, whose excursion raised about $80,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County.

Filmmakers capture tumult, drama of high school basketball

■ by patrick z. mcgavin Orr Academy High School rises from the southwest corner of Pulaski and Chicago.

The surrounding area is pockmarked. The transience is what stands out, demonstrated by the clutch of storefront churches, currency exchanges and fast-food outlets.

The athletic teams at Orr are a stable source of excitement and fun in a neighborhood otherwise known for its bleak urban trajectory of crime, poverty and institutional neglect.

Orr is a city basketball powerhouse and has reached the Illinois Class 3A state finals in Peoria the last two years, finishing fourth and third, respectively. The team’s rise has been filled with wonder, sorrow and heartbreak. The basketball gym is a classic bandbox, with tight corners and little breathing space, and that punctuates the sense of great theater.

For parts of the last two years, three filmmakers — each with roots in Evanston — have been there, wielding cameras like pens and finding a volatile and visceral filmmaking style to capture the tumult and drama of the young men who make up the team.

“Shot in the Dark” is the name of the documentary, from director Dustin Nakao Haider, cinematographer Ben Vogel and producer Daniel Poneman. The remarkable footage the three have created, based on the raw assembly, is something to behold. The images are impressionistic and emphatic, streaked with the sounds of gunfire and the constant specter of violence.

The subjects — tough, stony, and wary — express their ambitions and greatest fears. One of the key players the film follows, Tyquone Greer — 6-foot-7, gentle and inner-driven — ponders his future and the chances of his survival as he sits in his apartment. The movie meditates on race, class and whether basketball is a liberating, self-empowering means of escape of something illusory.

Nakao Haider studied film at New York University, and Vogel learned at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Poneman is the classic in-between figure who helped Nakao Haider and Vogel navigate the closed-off world. Nakao Haider and Vogel had been influenced by the landmark Chicago documentary about high school basketball, “Hoop Dreams,” and watched players like Derrick Rose, Jabari Parker and Anthony Davis take hold in the national consciousness.

“I wanted to try and do something about Jabari Parker in the summer of 2012, and I contacted Daniel and asked him to give me some interesting stories about a short documentary,” Nakao Haider said Like Parker, Poneman is a savant and prodigy who was profiled in Sports Illustrated when he was a student at Evanston High School. A self-taught talent scout, Poneman is a respected and affable presence in Chicago basketball culture who helped establish personal connections with many of the key Orr players and their coach, Louis Adams Sr.

The stories in “Shot in the Dark” are not always pleasant or easy. One player was arrested and spent much of his senior year in a juvenile detention facility rather than playing basketball. Another prominent figure was shot while attending a late-night party on the eve of the state tournament.

The Orr coach, Adams is tough, abrasive and demanding whose rigor and high standards hold the team’s sometimes fragile pieces together. One of the remarkable qualities of the film is the access Adams granted. The filmmakers are given thrilling and detailed insight into the make-up of the team and how they interact — especially the charged and often inflammatory relationship of the senior Adams and his son, also named Louis, a skilled and athletic player.

“I was humbled by the access they gave us,” Nakao Haider said. “Daniel has a lot of trust with these coaches, being a mentor and friend to these kids and that really opened some doors. Coach Adams wanted his story told, because he came from Englewood and he saw the value it could have for the rest of the city.”

The movie is influenced by the documentary tenets of cinéma vérité, or direct address brand of filmmaking.

Time for a renovation?

“I like to use a long telephoto lens if pos-

sible,” Vogel explained. “Being right up to the moment is what I enjoy most, getting a shot that most people would enjoy getting.”

“Shot in the Dark” is not really a basketball movie, the filmmakers explain. It is about the larger and wider culture at play.

“Basketball is black and white, and we’re trying to tell this huge, bigger story through a basketball narrative,” Nakao Haider said.

“The present story is Orr’s story, the historical and cultural context. We are also addressing this notion of the basketball hero, and that’s the biggest thing I run up against, the idea of young kids who are impoverished and come from very difficult backgrounds and they are trying to get out of their situation through basketball.”

The three filmmakers are in Los Angeles, meticulously going through the hundreds of hours of footage in putting the material into a final shape. The plan is to have it completed in time for submission to film festivals for early next year. They know they have something important and special.

Now it is about taking the proper steps to have it be seen. ■

Gubernatorial tax stances have North Shore impact

■ by simon murray In 2009, at the time of his predecessor Rod Blagojevich’s impeachment, Patrick Quinn — the lieutenant-governor-turned-governor — described Blagojevich’s fiscal plan as someone “who ate it up at dinner and ran up the bill, and then it’s time to pay the bill, and they’ve left the building.”

Quinn’s 67 percent personal income tax hike in 2011 — the biggest increase any state has adopted since the economic downturn, one passed in the final minutes of a lame-duck legislature — has helped narrow the state’s gaping fiscal hole. But Illinois still faces more than a $4 billion backlog in unpaid bills and a pension crisis, among

other fiscal woes.

The tax hike to 5 percent from 3 percent was scheduled to be rolled back to 3.75 percent next year — until Quinn said in March that it would become permanent to pay for, among other budgetary plans, better education, college scholarships, and an increase in the minimum wage.

Cue the gubernatorial election that is looming in November. Quinn, a Democrat who was narrowly elected to a full first term in 2010, will face businessman Bruce Rauner, a Republican from Winnetka.

Rauner told the Chicago Tribune that, if elected, he will roll the personal income tax rate back from 5 percent back to 3 percent within four years. The changes he envisions would have Springfield bringing in roughly $600 million a year by broadening the tax base to include 32 sectors. Rauner also proposes freezing property taxes. (Phone calls made to his office to ask questions about his stance were not returned.)

For the hundreds of thousands of North Shore residents, the difference in those tax rates adds up to tens of millions of dollars.

In Kenilworth, for instance — where the median household income is about $250,000 a year — a 5 percent rate on that income is $12,500; a 3 percent rate is $7,500, or $5,000 less.

That same 2011 tax change raised the rate on businesses to 7 percent from 4.8 percent (it is slated to drop to 5.25 percent in 2015).

Some firms in the North Shore are hoping it fades away as originally promised — but are not optimistic.

“We all should have known when this tax was pitched to us as a short-term budget fix

by Quinn that it would morph into a permanent increase,” says Scott Lackie, president of Griffith Grant & Lackie Realtors.

“Springfield is a dysfunctional nightmare that will only be fixed when we change the management of state government from top to bottom.”

Jay Shlifka, owner of Kiddles Sports in Market Square, disagrees.

“Yes, no one ever likes to write a check.

But you’ve got to look at the big picture.

You’ve got to look at our social issues,” he says.

Clothing line mixes fashionable look with sun protection

■ by joanna brown They were like any college friends vacationing in the Hamptons: daydreaming ideas for starting their own business — a partnership, of course — that would set the course for their future.

Their lofty plans to take the fashion world by storm could have easily washed out. But these women are tenacious, and in 2011 Anne Reilly of Kenilworth and Monique Hypes launched Mott50, a collection of sunprotective, fashion-forward clothing, from their New York apartment. They’ve since moved business operations from their Mott Street apartment to Chicago — and could not be happier about their decision.

“There’s no denying that New York is a fashion hub and it was exciting to go to the

by joel lerner garment district every day, but Chicago has phenomenal entrepreneurial and philanthropic communities,” said Hypes, now a resident of Chicago. “The Midwest is so welcoming, and it’s been good to network with the female entrepreneurs here.”

Added Reilly, “We have great local partners for design and production, and the boutiques we work with are easy to talk to. People have been very receptive to us.”

They’re selling clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50; to compare, the average white shirt has UPF 5. Mott50 has also committed a portion of its sales to the Melanoma Research Alliance find a cure for skin cancer, and the staff works to educate consumers about the dangers of sun damage.

It’s a cause close to their hearts. Reilly has a family history of melanoma, and her

mother is currently in treatment. They know, too, that melanoma rates are highest in women ages 25-29.

“We’re careful not to use scare tactics, but rather the facts about beauty and anti-aging,” Reilly said “Ninety percent of wrinkles are caused by the sun, and I’m confident that at some point people will become aware of that and convert to healthier lifestyles.”

Mott50’s recommendations include regular screenings by a dermatologist, daily use of moisturizers with SPF 30 or greater, and their preference for sunless tanning lotions over sun bathing.

But their commitment to their cause is powerless if their product doesn’t sell, and so Hypes and Reilly are equally committed to designing a line of clothing that they, too, wear every day.

“We can change the mindset about skin protection and still live life to its fullest.” | Anne Reilly “The first test is if I would wear it myself,” Hypes said. “When I stray from that, it goes nowhere. When we were getting started we were aware of the other products on the market, but we felt that the feel of the

fabrics left a lot to be desired, as did the color palette and the designs. We wanted to make clothes that were soft and easy to wear and to incorporate into your existing wardrobe. And also clothes that made people feel good, modern and fashionable.”

Both women grew up in active families. For Hypes, hiking, mountain biking, skiing and traveling were routine, while Reilly spent summer days boating in Cape Cod. Their memories are apparent in their designs.

“I always think about what would motivate me to choose Mott50 over Tory Burch or Lululemon,” Reilly said. “Maybe you’re a walker so you start with a basic T-shirt for your walks. Or maybe you’re planning a beach vacation and so you’ll try our tunic.”

“My goal is to get people to try our products, but the education behind the products is really important to me personally,” Reilly said. “The fact is that skin cancer is highly preventable — we can change the mindset about skin protection and still live life to its fullest.” ■

Following: I follow the library world and things that are happening. I’m on my city’s library board, so I’m interested in what’s happening in public libraries, and I’m on the Illinois Library Association board, so I follow legislation that affects libraries around the state.

Most of my social media followings have to do with the botanic gardens and libraries; I live and breathe libraries. I love them and what they add to people’s lives, and I love that we can enhance knowledge.

Activity: As the director, I do all the management of people and assigning jobs and hiring and budgets. So I see my role as the captain of the ship, so to speak.

Everyone on my staff — there are eight of us —has a job to do, and it’s my job to connect everyone together. I work on grand proposals and public programs.

One program is public library days. We invite a public library in for a Sunday afternoon — the patrons, not the staff. They get an introduction to the library and a gallery talk and an in-person

rare book viewing. It’s been really well-received; we usually have a waiting list. It’s a free program.

We create four original exhibitions each year. We draw on themes of what’s happening at the gardens and the world around us. We also are just finishing a grant to conserve and digitize about 50 books in three years.

We requested a one-year extension. I paid a nonprofit to do the digitization for us, since we don’t have a conservation lab.

We also have a science library that’s not open to public, but all of the materials there are available — we have them shipped up here.

Eating: I don’t eat meat and I don’t eat dairy, so I eat a lot of fish and eggs and chicken. I think lunch is leftover tube steak, rice pilaf and vegetables that my husband made. He’s a good cook.

What is your favorite mistake? One of our colleagues last year was selling rare books at an auction. In the end the prices were quite moderate, and we should have bought another book at the auction. We did get one, we just didn’t get that second one, which would have been amazing. ■

Two teens answer call of the wild ■ by jake jarvi Summer camps away from home are a long-honored tradition for children and teens. For a couple of weeks, they have the chance to explore a personal passion or experience a little independence.

However, for Lake Forest High School juniors Nick Yehle and Nick Ehrhard, summer camp wasn’t a walk in the park. It was eight weeks cut off from any cell phone and Internet service — including three straight weeks of paddling a canoe through the untouched wilderness.

They loved it.

“It gives you this really amazing work ethic,” Yehle says. “We had a day where we paddled 40 miles. It was 17 hours long. We stopped for maybe an hour and a half total.”

“You really grow up. And it teaches you life skills.” | Nick Ehrhard The three-week trip is the most challenging wilderness quest offered by Camp Kooch-i-ching in International Falls, Minn.

Having attended the camp for years, both boys had experienced the wealth of activities — from archery and sailing to swimming and rock climbing — that are offered within the camp.

Several canoe, backpacking, and climbing wilderness trips are available to campers, and the challenge level ramps up as the boys work their way through the four stages of Kooch-i-ching. The youngest, known as Preps, conduct a seven-day trip; the Juniors do a 10-day trip; Intermediates tackle two weeks; and the Seniors enjoy three weeks away from civilization. That’s 21 days without seeing any human being outside of seven other campers and two counselors.

The canoe journey starts in Southern Indian Lake in Manitoba, Canada and the campers traverse lakes, rivers, and rapids all the way to the Hudson Bay. They camp every night and explore the unaltered terrain of the Canadian wilderness. Over the course of the trip, Yehle and Ehrhard saw wild animals roaming along the banks, including moose, polar bears, seals — and one Arctic wolf.

“Before each trip you’re a different person than you are when you get back,” Ehrhard says. “Each trip is another stage in your life. You really grow up. And it teaches you life skills. You figure out how to work with other people. Even if you don’t get along with them you have to figure out how to work with them, because you’re stuck with them.”

The two 16-year-olds also learned how to work with others before the canoe trip when they built a new permanent cabin for the camp alongside fellow seniors. The

sense of belonging to a community is reinforced at the end of camp with a ceremony called Grand Council, where the campers are joined by their parents and Native American dances are performed in traditional wardrobe around a large bonfire.

“Every day I’ve woken up and gotten out of a tent has been amazing and I’ve learned something new,” Yehle says. “It’s just so different and refreshing to be away from everything and know that there is no one else around for hundreds of miles.” ■

The village introduced an ordinance to increase the Home Rule Sales Tax from 0.25 percent to 1 percent, effective Jan. 1.

If adopted, the additional sales tax revenue will be utilized to fund critical infrastructure and equipment improvements such as road resurfacing, alley maintenance, sidewalk repairs, police car replacements, and snow plow replacements.

Because of work commitments, Reena and Harit Talwar have lived in four countries and on three continents. With such a busy life, the Lake Forest couple has always made sure to carve out family vacations with their three children — Vidush (25), Eeshan (21) and Saisha (17). Each parent also bonds with one child on a separate vacation.

Says Harit, “Both are necessary to keep our sanity — and to keep our value system intact.”

This year, the entire family gathered in Maui.

“It was absolutely fantastic snorkeling and surfing,” Harit says. “We’re all great at snorkeling — and horrible at surfing.”

Coincidentally, the trip overlapped with the World

Cup. Everyone would wake up at 6 a.m. in the Hawaii condominium to watch the games together. After hiking on the beach, they’d watch the next game by the pool.

Soon after that excursion, Reena and Eeshan traveled to the Grand Canyon. They backpacked to the bottom — signing up for the most rigorous hike available — before camping out.

“He was so sweet — he’d wait for me if I lagged behind,” Reena says. “It turned out to be the most amazing trip — very different from Maui, no doubt about that.” ■ ~ David Sweet

Should couples take a swing at golf together?

■ by joanna brown A wise friend once told me, with a chuckle, that golf was invented so that men could better avoid talking to each other. (Of course, he’s a hunter, where total silence is required.)

But I thought of my friend and chuckled, too, when a local golf pro suggested my husband and I might enjoy taking a lesson together.

“When couples play, typically the husband tries to act as the coach on the course.”

Explained Michael Wenzel, a PGA-certified teaching professional and director of instruction at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook, “It helps to bring couples together with their games so that each has a better idea of what the other should be working on. You’re less likely to have one spouse teaching the other their bad habits when they do this. When couples play, typically the husband tries to act as the coach on the course.”

Wenzel and I were both familiar with that scenario. It

didn’t surprise me to hear that he taught his own wife the basics of the game he loves — and that she doesn’t always appreciate his continued coaching.

“I don’t like to see her struggle, ever, but I’ve learned to wait until she asks me for help with her swing,” he said.

Wenzel also teaches golf to groups of children. I consulted with the Glenview-based First Tee of Greater Chicago, one chapter of a national organization formed to positively impact children through golf.

During lessons, the sport is woven with character-building activities. These life skills include self-management, goal setting, honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and more.

And doesn’t everybody want those traits present in their marriage? Australian author and teacher Ray Jamieson made that question a topic in his 2013 TED Conversation at www.ted.com. Jamieson wrote that the most important things in a relationship, from his experience, are honesty, listening, and time spent together. His audience added trust, acceptance, confidentiality, communication, respect, compromise and divine intervention.

So is the golf course a good place to work on your marriage, to encourage the character traits that the TED community suggested are so necessary for a healthy relationship?

I’m not sure — I haven’t scheduled our lesson with Wenzel yet. But I’m fairly confident that most every golfer has

Ingredients: 1 ½ ounces Distiller’s Gin No. 6 (or Sol Chamomile Citrus Vodka) ¾ ounce simple syrup 4 lime wedges 6 cucumber wedges plus 1 wheel for garnish Fresh oregano (optional) Steps: Muddle lime, cucumber wedges, simple syrup, and oregano in mixing glass.

Add vodka and ice, then shake well. Pour shaker contents back into glass. Garnish with cucumber wheel. Serves 1

A MATTER OF TASTE Girl and the Goat veteran launches new restaurant ■ by katie rose mceneely

Jennifer Eisen recently opened House 406 in Northbrook.

What prompted you to open House 406? I felt like Northbrook could use a small, family-owned, farm-to-table type of restaurant, somewhere that bring a real sense of community. I was born and raised here; I still live here. My parents live nine houses away.

Years cooking? I’ve always liked to cook since I was little. I loved Martha Stewart.

I was always domestic; I found a love for farm-to-table cooking through that.

What’s your background in the business? I went to culinary school at Kendall; before that I went to college for nutrition and biology and worked in catering. I worked with Stephanie Izard at Girl and the Goat downtown; I was an assistant and a line cook, I did a bunch of different things down there. I opened a taco place with my boyfriend while I was working with her, and I left in April to be full-time doing this.

I’m more front-end now; Eloin Amador, who’s the chef, and I collaborate. We’ll make something in the kitchen together, but for the most part I’m out in the front.

Most innovative part of your menu?

I think something that’s probably innovative for around here is our ricotta gnudi. It’s actually ricotta, parmesan and a little salt; then you coat it with semolina for three days to pull out the moisture and make its own

noodle.

Some of our desserts are kind of crazy; we have a chocolate semifreddo with puppychow crust. I wanted it to taste like a s’more.

It’s totally a North Shore mom thing: everyone had puppy chow growing up.

Signature dish? We wanted to make more of our family Sunday-dinner type favorites; it’s comfort food dressed up. The food is really cozy and isn’t anything except for what my family likes to eat.

What do you like to eat at home? It’s terrible, but lately I’ve been eating is a lot of pizza — like, a lot of pizza. But Eloin makes pasta. And tacos.

Worthwhile gadget? We use a mandolin all the time.

Favorite cookbook? “Sunday Suppers and Laugh” by Susanne Goering. Her book pretty much solidified my career. I still look at it about three times a week, just to reference what’s in season.

Favorite fruit? Raspberries.

Funniest kitchen incident? Our favorite thing when I worked at Girl and the Goat is we’d always watch security video of people falling while we were cooking. It’s pretty funny. Sometimes people’s feet would just come out from under them. It brightened everybody’s day.

Recipe: Elotes-Style Carrots

Peel and blanch 1 bunch farm carrots by putting in boiling water for 1 minute.

Remove and add to icy water.

Turn grill to medium heat, add the carrots and cook until done through and hot.

Remove from grill, toss with lime aioli and top with 2 tablespoons cojita cheese and cayenne pepper to taste.

Recipe: Lime aioli Drape a towel over a sauce pot and rest a mixing bowl inside. Whisk 1 egg yolk and ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar together until smooth and light yellow. While constantly whisking, slowly drizzle ½ cup grapeseed oil into the egg mixture to emulsify. It is important to add the oil slowly and evenly to make sure the aioli does not break. When all the oil is added, season with salt and pepper and whisk in 1 tablespoon lime juice.

Well-received Cecola emerges as other go-to guy for Ramblers ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northsoreweekend.com Loyola Academy wide receiver Spencer Cecola used to tear it up while playing in an eight-man football league for Lake Forest Country Day grade school.

He was a big deal back then.

“I didn’t know him,” said Loyola Academy quarterback DJ Melsheimer, who used to suit up for School of St. Mary in Lake Forest and play against Cecola. “But I knew of him.

“He was a hard guy to cover. Tough to match up against.”

You wouldn’t get any argument about that from the defensive backfield at Fenwick High School.

Cecola pretty much was impossible to cover on Sept. 20. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound senior caught three touchdown passes from Melsheimer in a 42-0 Chicago Catholic Blue victory over the visiting Friars.

“Spencer is a lot like (Owen) Buscaglia.

Long body. Athletic,” said LA head coach John Holecek. “He’ll be another go-to receiver for us as we go up against a tough schedule.”

Cecola was impressive from the get-go in the Fenwick game.

On LA’s opening series, Cecola ran a deep vertical route down the left sideline and hauled in a perfectly placed ball from Melsheimer for a 14-yard touchdown.

“Just trying to make a play when I had

a chance to,” said Cecola.

As it turned out, he was just warming up.

No. 7 — Melsheimer — hooked up with No. 8 — Cecola — for another 6 points on LA’s second series of the second half.

This time, he beat one-on-one coverage and caught a 25-yard TD pass on a fade pattern.

“That was a gift route,” noted Cecola.

“A free route.”

In other words, Cecola, as the receiver on the backside, had an option to run a hitch, a fade, a slant or just about anything else.

He chose fade.

And that pretty much put the game into the fade to black mode. With the TD, the Ramblers (3-1) went ahead 35-0 with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

But Cecola’s afternoon wasn’t quite complete. There was an encore performance.

On the very next series, he revisited the end zone by gathering in another 25-yard reception on another fade route.

“On that one, DJ audibled. He checked out of the play,” said Cecola.

Cecola finished the game with a careerbest six receptions for a career-high 123 yards.

“Spencer is a phenomenal route runner, who knows when to make his breaks,” said Melsheimer.

The grade-school rivalry thing is now a thing of the past. This duo has become dynamic.

“We live about a block away from each other (in Lake Forest),” said Melsheimer.

“We got together (to play catch) about once a week this summer. Lake Forest College has 45 yards of turf. So we’d go there.”

Cecola, who caught nine passes for 117 yards and one TD last fall while playing behind Fran O’Malley, also was a factor in Loyola’s Week 3 loss to Brother Rice 16-13. He snatched five passes for 58 yards and one TD. “We had a rough game against Brother Rice,” said Cecola. “It was important for us to bounce back today.”

And that chemistry with Melsheimer figures to get better and better.

“Hats off to DJ,” said Cecola. “He’s shaken off the tough game he had against Edwardsville in Week Two (5 INTs).”

Everything is clicking now as the Ramblers get ready to travel to St. Ignatius (1-3) on Sept. 26. Melsheimer completed 13-of-20 passes for 184 yards against Fenwick.

His other TD pass went to Buscaglia (3-31) on a 7-yard strike just before halftime.

“Our O-line was phenomenal, and all of our receivers did a great job of getting separation,” said Melsheimer. “We have about eight guys who can catch the ball.

And I have tons of faith in all of them.”

He also didn’t mind sticking the ball into the gut of senior running back Dara Laja. While following the blocks of center Michael Carlin, guards Jack Tamisiea and Sam Badovinac, and tackles Jack Moroni

and Charlie Murray, Laja opened the game with runs of 29 and 17 yards. He wound up with 160 yards on 21 carries.

His numbers could have been even gaudier. On the opening series of the second half, he had a spectacular 80-yard TD run called back by a holding penalty.

Notable: Senior outside linebacker Emmett Russell was deserving of a game ball. He participated in an end-zone celebration late in first quarter, when he returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown.

“All of our linebackers are fantastic,” said Holecek, referring to the play of Brian O’Brien, Calvin Falkenhayn and Mark Nichol. “I feel like all of them can be college football players. Emmett has been real steady. He was the question mark coming into the season.”

Russell, O’Brien and defensive lineman Charlie Dreher finished the game with five tackles apiece. Nichol had a quarterback sack, while senior safety Mark Dowdle had LA’s other interception.

Falkenhayn was injured in the third quarter and didn’t return.

“Next time you see him he might be playing with a cast on his hand,” said Holecek.

Besides making three stops, including one tackle for loss, Falkenhayn also scored his team’s second TD of the game on a 1-yard run. ■

Skilled Dethlefsen is a guiding force on — and off — the court ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northsoreweekend.com Jenna Dethlefsen developed into a high deft hitter last year.

Her skills at the net didn’t go unnoticed. She made the all-conference team.

This fall, the Lake Forest High School senior has added plenty to her hitting arsenal. She can beat you at the net with an array of shots.

But that’s only half the story with Dethlefsen. As one of only two seniors on an up and coming squad, she’s unquestionably the leader and “big sister” for the Scouts.

In fact, Dethlefsen takes the role even further. “(Senior Madilyn Locey) and I are the ‘moms’ of this team,” she said, with a Mona Lisa grin.

Last weekend, at the Maine East Invite, Dethlefsen had to play caring traffic cop and responsible mom — at the same time.

“While crossing a street on the way to our bus, I had to tell them, ‘Hey girls, watch out for the cars and look both ways,’ ” said Dethlefsen.

Mom words.

“Sometimes, they are a little hard to control. But they’re fun,” said Dethlefsen.

And … extremely talented. LF coach Steve Rochon is banking on the future.

Seven sophomores are seeing significant playing time this fall.

“I think they’re going to be crazy good (in the years to come),” said Dethlefsen.

“Hopefully,” she added, “We can tap into some of that success this year.

There’s a lot of time left in the season.”

Dethlefsen, who played five seasons

of club volleyball with Net Force, currently is performing at the highest level of her career.

Following a tough three-set loss (1825, 25-15, 25-21) to visiting Barrington on Sept. 22, Rochon looked at his stats — and nodded his approval.

“Jenna was 16-for-16 with seven kills,” said Rochon. “Consistency. Day in, day out that’s what’s we get from her. She’s been a consistent element for us all season.

“She was an all-conference player for us last year, and she hasn’t skipped a beat this year,” the coach added.

So far, the highlight of the Dethlefsen’s season was earning alltournament honors, along with LF sophomore Ashley Williams, at the 16-team Charger Invite Champaign Centennial High School on Sept. 5-6.

She had 23 kills, 16 blocks and 21 service points in five matches to help the Scouts take fourth place.

Dethlefsen can be a hard player to read — if you’re on the other side of the net.

“She’s a power player … with a lot of diversity to her game,” said Rochon.

“She hits the angle shots. She hits cross-court shots with authority. She comes up with a lot of quality kills.”

Sophomore setter Emma Patlovich has come to count on her.

“She’s so reliable,” said Patlovich.

“She’s the go-to girl for us. A lot of times, I’m out there thinking, ‘I’ve got to get the ball to Jenna.’ ” Being the elder stateswoman on this squad, Dethlefsen plays with a confident demeanor.

“She doesn’t let a mistake get to her,” Rochon said. “She’s got that nextball mentality. Distractions don’t get in her way.

“She is,” added Rochon, a longtime girls and boys volleyball coach at three different high schools (Libertyville, Vernon Hills and Lake Forest) who reached a coaching milestone (400 career wins) last year, “one of the most emotionally tough players that I’ve ever coached.”

Volleyball takes up a big part of her life. But there are many sides to Dethlefsen, who plans to play club ball at California school next year.

Her passionate side comes out on the volleyball court.

Her compassionate side? It’s there, too.

Since sophomore year, the Lake Forest High School senior volleyball player has been a member of the school’s Human Rights Club, which currently is helping needy children in Africa.

Notable: The Scouts (7-10 overall) have come up with a number of signature wins this season. Their ledger includes wins over Evanston, Lake Zurich and Mundelein. They held the upper hand early against Barrington before letting it get away. “We had 13 services errors tonight,” said Rochon.

“That’s just unacceptable.” In addition to Patlovich and Williams, the other sophomores receiving valuable varsity experience include Maren Douglass, Claire Torkelson, Bridig Brennan, Meghan McGrail and Ashley Amos. Juniors Lucy Ward, Marianna Dannecker, Allison Hensel, Jacqueline Turck and Emma Butler also are players to watch. Ward had four kills and one block against the Fillies. In the 25-11, 25-14 win over Mundelein on Sept. 17, Butler and Dethlefsen had eight kills apiece while Amos had 23 assists. ■

As a lifelong fan of baseball, David Hochstadt of Highland Park noticed fewer players of Hispanic origin taking the field on game days.

When it came time to chose a service project while preparing for his bar mitzvah in eighth grade, he decided to see if any fourth- or fifthgrade students from Oak Terrace Elementary School in Highwood would be interested in baseball lessons.

Hochstadt had a solid grasp on Spanish, and the first lessons he gave were mostly in Spanish. Even after his bar mitzvah project was over, Hochstadt continued giving baseball lessons to younger ballplayers in his spare time.

For his sensational efforts, Hochstadt will receive a special gift from

Fall back in Love this Fall

sports@northsoreweekend.com Lake Forest High School senior defensive back Virgil Young saw the most beautiful color in a football player’s world after picking up a fumble last week.

“Green, nothing but green,” Young said, referring to a wide swath of open turf at Stevenson on Sept.

19. The ball had been punched out of the hands of Patriots junior receiver Jack Sorenson by Scouts senior lineman Nicholas Athenson.

The 5-foot-11, 176-pound Young then acted like a seasoned shortstop, gathering the ball as if it had been a ground ball hit directly at him in the first inning (make that, the first quarter).

Young ran untouched for 25 yards and a touchdown, paring Stevenson’s lead to 7-6 in Lincolnshire.

The dashing scoop-and-score sequence served as one of Lake Forest’s highlights in a 34-17 loss — its first setback after opening the season with three wins.

“Virgil,” Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli said, “has been a great contributor to our program. I think he is as productive as any player we have this year.

“I sure am happy we have him.”

Green — Stevenson senior wideout Cameron Green, not the color of the field’s surface — certainly made the other head coach, Bill McNamara, grateful as well. The supremely talented 6-3, 200-pounder caught two touchdown passes (28 and 8 yards) in the first half and finished with nine receptions for 97 yards.

Young had the unenviable task of trying to contain Green.

“I liked the challenge,” Young admitted. “He got me on a couple of slants [each resulted in a TD]. But I learned something going against him. What I experienced out there … it will make me a better player.

“A great player, a great guy,” added Young, who got to know Green when the two crossed paths at a lake house in Lake Beulah, Wis. “He’s a ‘silent killer’ when he plays, because he never trash talks on the field.”

Young was the talk of North Chicago’s football program back in 2011. A safety/wing back on the Warhawks’ freshman squad at the time, Young returned a punt for a TD and rushed for a 60-yard TD in a defeat of Round Lake.

He transferred to Lake Forest before his sophomore year, when he recovered a fumble on an opponent’s two-yard line to set up a key score in a huge victory for the Scouts’ sophomore club.

The foe that night?

None other than Stevenson.

Following his first season on varsity last fall, Young — also a punt and kick returner this fall — hit the weight room hard and often, impressing and thrilling Scouts strength and conditioning coach/assistant coach Larry Lilja.

Young upped many of his maxes by 50-60 pounds.

“His lifts skyrocketed,” Lilja said. “Every day he brings an outstanding work ethic. His level of play is so much higher compared to last year; he’s probably our most improved player.

“He is,” Lilja added, “exactly what you want in a player, in a kid.”

Lake Forest (3-1, 0-1) was in contention midway through the third quarter against Stevenson (4-0, 2-0), thanks to a 16-yard TD pass from junior Daniel Carollo to classmate Quinn Julian. Kyle Gattari’s extra point cut the Pats’ lead to 21-17.

The hosts then put up 13 unanswered points behind senior Will Bourbon’s passing (a 63-yard TD connection to Jordan Atkins) and a clock-devouring, 97-yard TD drive.

Lake Forest hosts Libertyville (3-1, 1-1) Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Libertyville lost 43-26 to Warren on Sept. 19.

Notable: Scouts senior wide receiver Sage Lawrence suffered a broken collarbone in the third quarter of the loss to Stevenson. He had grabbed a team-high five tosses for 93 yards, including a 33-yarder on LF’s second possession of the second half. ■

Healthy senior is back on solid ground for high-flying Trevians

sports@northsoreweekend.com New Trier senior field hockey player Lindsay Hackett has visited countries all over the world.

The teen has already unpacked her luggage on five continents. Her oft-used, worn passport is probably nearing a crinkly paperback-book-read-by-dozens condition.

Trips to Africa and Antarctica would put the Trevians’ steady scorer on a par with international business executives and allow her to declare, “I traveled to all seven continents.”

“I went to Greece when I was a third-grader,” the Wilmette resident says.

Hackett landed in Australia two years later, another one of her favorite destinations to date.

The places she least enjoyed checking out?

Narrow strips of land on field hockey fields, aka sidelines.

Hackett had to reside there for the entire 2013 field hockey season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee near the end of her sophomore lacrosse season.

“Big bummer,” she says. “It was really upsetting, not being able to play for that long. I’ve always loved field hockey. I didn’t want to stop playing.

“But I realized not playing would also motivate me, push me.”

Evidently it also shoved her to the northern regions of New Trier’s list of scorers this fall. The sister of former NT field hockey players Allison and Kate Hackett, Lindsay recorded two hat tricks in the Trevians’ first 10 games.

Her first triple powered NT to a 4-1 defeat of Oak ParkRiver Forest on Aug. 27.

Hackett struck for three more goals in a 6-0 rout of Lakes on Sept. 6.

“Lindsay is a hard worker, a scrapper,” Trevians coach

Stephanie Nykaza says of her top-notch attack. “I like her because she’s always adjusting, always listening. She does things right when she plays.

“Lindsay,” she adds, “learned a lot last year while sitting out. She learned patience, how to be more compassionate than she already was, and she never missed a practice, never missed a summer session. Her attitude … it’s great.”

Such an attitude made it easy for the Trevians to name Hackett one of their four captains this fall, a designation that floored her.

“I felt honored, and I had a hard time believing it because many of my teammates had never seen me play,” Hackett says.

Hackett showcased her strengths at the attack position near the end of a shootout loss to host Lake Forest High School on Sept. 17. With her team trailing 2-1 to the two-time reigning state champion Scouts in a 10-minute overtime session, Hackett secured a loose ball and used a couple of slick maneuvers and toughness to poke the ball past LF goalkeeper Kerry Lawler.

The tally knotted the contest at 3:23 of OT. LF eventually edged NT 2-1 in the shootout session.

“That goal she scored … that got all of us so excited, the way she kept fighting, kept going, stayed aggressive,” NT senior attack Rachel Mirkin says. “Lindsay never gives up.

“We love that about her.”

Hackett would love nothing more than to help NT capture another state championship. It would give the three Hackett sisters a combined six state-title medals.

Kate, a Denison (Ohio) University student studying abroad this semester, was a midfielder on three straight state-championship squads; Allison, an SMU graduate, played attack for two title crews.

Three, two … one?

“It’s kind of fun, having the opportunities to coach all three Hackett sisters,” Nykaza says. “Kate played an

entirely different position. Allison was more vocal as an attack player than Lindsay is. Lindsay is not loud, but there’s an intensity about her when she competes.

“And she’s my daughter’s age,” the coach adds, referring to NT senior defender Kristen Nykaza. “I got to see both of them grow up as players and compete as teammates.”

Nykaza’s 2014 edition (15-3) won its first 13 games before the setback at Lake Forest last week. The Trevians then went 2-2 at the highly competitive Oak Park-River Forest Invitational on Sept. 19-20, topping Huron 4-0 and Manuel 1-0 and falling 4-3 to Villa Duchesne and 1-0 to Assumption.

Hackett scored twice in the tourney and assisted on a goal by senior attack Kitty Kenyon. Mirkin finished with three goals and an assist.

Mirkin also happens to be one of Hackett’s travel partners. But their trips together don’t require planes.

They use cars.

They’re carpool buddies.

“Yes, we talk about field hockey on the way to school,” Mirkin says. “But we talk about a lot of things, listen to music. You can talk with Lindsay about anything; she listens well. And sometimes she sings in the car.”

Notable: Trevians junior attack Mia Solberg scored the goal, on an assist from junior attack Sofia Crnkovich, in the 1-0 defeat of Manuel at the OP-RF Invite on Sept. 20.

NT sophomore keeper Therese Cooney earned the shutout. … Trevians junior Ali Denby dished a pair of assists at the two-day tournament, and junior midfielder Maggie Lake scored a goal in the game against Huron. … Mirkin tallied the first goal of the game in the shootout loss to Lake Forest on Sept. 17. … Kenyon was dominant in a 4-0 win over Chicago Latin on Sept. 4, scoring three goals and providing the assist on a goal by Hackett. She followed that up two days later with a two-goal, two-assist performance in a 6-0 defeat of Lakes. ■

Lake Forest Academy: Diago Quinn, a 6-foot-9 senior, has made a verbal commitment to Monmouth University in New Jersey. The Hawks are a Division I program which competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

ROAMING THE SIDELINES FOOTBALL

Highland Park: Led by quarterback Sam Nevers, big plays carried the day as the Giants improved to 4-0 with a 28-7 victory at Waukegan on Sept. 19.

The senior QB threw three long touchdowns to three different members of the “Hands Squad” and finished the game 9-of-20 for 219 yards. He connected with Hallvard Lundevall on a 37-yard pass play early in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Nevers hooked up with Luke Norcia on a 45-yard scoring strike. And, in the fourth quarter, Aaron Brown hauled in a 29-yard TD pass.

Nevers, who has compiled 663 yards and six touchdowns in the four games, completed passes to six different receivers. HP’s top ball carrier was Cole Greenberg (18-42). His two-yard TD run with 7:55 left in the third quarter put HP ahead for good.

Brown, Cristian Volpentesta and Jack McGuire led the defense with seven solo tackles each. McGuire also had an interception, while Teddy Sutker had five tackles and a quarterback sack.

The Giants will travel to Deerfield (13) on Sept. 26 (7:30 p.m.).

New Trier: The numbers are impressive. The Trevians, who defeated host Deerfield 43-14 on Sept. 19 to run their record to 4-0, have outscored their opponents 125-41.

Senior running back Kevin Mulhern averaged 8.5 yards per carry in the win.

He racked up 128 yards on 15 carries and wound up with three touchdowns, including a 45-yarder.

Caleb Roth and Charlie Timson also had rushing touchdowns.

NT’s passing game was in evidence.

Clay Czyzynski (7-13-0, 151 yards) connected with Colin Casas (2-67) on a 48-yard touchdown. Roth (2-36), Scott Hammes (2-29) and Andrew Hauser (119) also made big receiving plays for the Trevians, who travel to Waukegan (2-2) on Sept. 27 (1:30 p.m.).

On the defensive side, Tim Fox finished with 10 tackles, including four for losses. The other leaders were Hammes (8 tackles, 2 for loss), Casas (7 tackles, 3 sacks) and Will Francke (6 tackles, 1 for loss).

STICK NATION FIELD HOCKEY

Lake Forest: Elise Wong was named LF’s Player of the Game as the Scouts defeated visiting New Trier 4-3 in a shootout on Sept. 17. Wong scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 shootout. Libby Thompson scored the team’s other shootout goal. Off an assist from Wong, Mary Alice Arnstein tallied the team’s lone goal during regulation. And, in the 10-minute overtime period, Sheridan

Weiss scored on an assist by Erin Close.

Kerry Lawler earned the win in goal.

The win avenged a 2-0 loss to New Trier on Aug. 23.

On Sept. 15, Sasha Carney tallied three goals as the Scouts topped Highland Park 6-1. She was assisted by three different teammates: Thompson, Emma DeNoble and Paige LeClerq. Wong had two goals and one assist, while LeClerq had LF’s other goal. Lawler and Hannah Metzger did the job in goal.

In other recent action, Lake Forest fell to Oak Park-River Forest on Sept.

13, while the Scouts took care of St. Ignatius 4-0 on Sept. 11. Abby Warren scored the team’s lone goal against OPRF. Thompson, Warren and Katelyn Lochiatto scored against St. Ignatius.

Loyola: The Ramblers improved to 8-0 with their 4-0 victory over Francis Parker on Sept. 18. Micaela Foley led the team with a pair of goals, while Sarah Hagadorn and Molly Laughlin also tallied goals.

On Sept. 17, Hagadorn broke a scoreless tie in LA’s 1-0 victory over Oak Park-River Forest.

The Ramblers, who took third place in their pool at the OPRF Invite on Sept. 19-20, also recorded shutouts in recent wins over Elgin Academy 8-0 and Glenbrook South 3-0. Jane Totaro scored twice and Laura Mahoney once against GBS. Laughlin led the team with four goals against Elgin Academy, while Hagadorn scored twice. Totaro and Margaret Crawford also scored.

PERLMAN … A GEM OF A SETTER

HP senior is rock solid with her reliability and versatility ■

sports@northsoreweekend.com Mark Perlman looked, blinked, looked again.

After uncharacteristically arriving late for a Highland Park High School girls volleyball match three years ago, the father of then-freshman setter Ali Perlman wondered why in the world his daughter was lofting sets early in a playoff opener against Deerfield.

The score stood at 4-4 as he looked for a bleacher seat.

“She had played maybe 47 seconds of time on varsity before that match,” the proud father recalls.

Ali Perlman had been pressed into quarterbacking HP’s spikers after starting setter Natalie Behnke lost a bout with food poisoning.

“I was really nervous,” admits the 5-foot-8 Perlman, now HP’s starting setter.

Giants volleyball coach Beth Peterson remembers Perlman’s state of mind differently.

“Ali was beyond nervous,” she says.

Translation: More than one Giant setter had to deal with a queasy tummy that night.

Perlman had another reason for experiencing an uneasy feeling before the first bleat of a referee’s whistle in the postseason contest.

“My hands were cold as a setter,” she says. “I’d been playing as a defensive specialist [after earning a promotion from JV to varsity halfway through the season].”

But Perlman came through and delivered splendidly, helping the Giants down their rivals under the bright lights on a big stage.

“Ali,” Peterson says, “is so level-headed, so calm; it’s what you want in a setter. But she’s also very, very intense. In that [2011 playoff match vs. Deerfield], Ali showed how reliable she is. Reliability — on and off the court — is a big part of who she is, and it’s why her teammates have always had a tremendous amount of respect for her.”

Perlman put up 21 assists in HP’s 23-25, 25-18, 25-14 defeat of visiting Nile North on Sept. 22. She displayed her versatility and value in a two-point stretch in the first set, feeding a right-on assist to 6-1 senior outside hitter Stela Kukoc after deftly striking a left-handed, cut kill that teardropped to the right corner of the Vikings’ front row.

Perlman’s favorite tennis player, Roger Federer, would have been impressed with the touch and the sharp angle of the clean winner.

“I love his character and how great of a role model he is,” says Perlman, who likes to hit yellow balls in the summers with HP senior varsity tennis player Ashley Levin. “Roger never smashes his racket, keeps his calm and knows how to settle

himself down.

“Anybody who watches him play sees how much he respects the game,” she adds.

Anybody who watches Perlman, a cocaptain, play volleyball sees a placid presence and a stable influence. Her reaction to directing an errant set is identical to her reaction to thrusting a perfect set on match point.

Impassive.

Impassive.

“She is calm and laid-back,” says Kukoc, also a co-captain. “But she’s also a fun person to be around. As a setter, she knows where her teammates like their sets and how to throw it around to each player. I love going right up to her, after she does what she does so well, and telling her, ‘Great set!’ ” The brother of former HPHS volleyball player Geoffrey Perlman (now 21 years old), Ali gained knowledge while attending Giants boys volleyball matches and, when she was 12 and 13, developed her game under the guidance of Sky High volleyball club coaches in Vernon Hills.

Serving as a setter involves much more than the launch of a volleyball, she discovered in a hurry.

“You have to have awareness, knowledge of the game,” Perlman says.

“Knowing which hitter on your team is hot — that’s always important. You also have to notice the holes on defense on the other side of the court and do whatever you can [to exploit them].”

Perlman’s sets stopped suddenly in October of her sophomore year after an unusual and scary occurrence at a practice led to a concussion. A wayward volleyball smacked by a JV player struck the back of Perlman’s head near her right ear.

The injury wiped out the rest of her volleyball season and kept her from playing a spring sport. Simply running was painful.

Perlman, a soccer player her freshman year, joined the school’s water polo program in the spring of 2013, swimming during practices and serving as the Giants’ statistician during games. She got cleared to return to athletics in time for her junior volleyball season.

A concussion is an all-too-familiar injury to HP’s current varsity volleyball squad (8-8, 2-1 in the Central Suburban League North after its three-set defeat of Niles North’s scrappy crew). Three Giants — junior outside hitter Grace Rhoades, sophomore outside hitter Taylor Czerwinski and sophomore defensive specialist/libero Leah Weiss — have been sidelined for weeks with the same head injury.

“Those injuries … they threw us off,” Perlman says, adding another Giant, senior outside hitter Emily Korman, has been out with a knee injury. “But we all realized we have to push forward, stay positive. Others got great opportunities to fill

in and play, and they’ve done a nice job.”

Perlman will be forever grateful for the opportunity to play on two teams led by Behnke, a consummate teammate who did much more than amass assists in Giants togs.

“Natalie,” Perlman says, “was a great leader who included everyone and made my transition to varsity easy for me. She was all about bettering the team and making sure we all worked well together.”

It’s apparent Perlman paid close attention to Behnke’s approach to volleyball as well as the value she placed on team dynamics in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

“I try to connect with all of the girls,” says Perlman, who might play club volleyball in college (her list includes Butler, Bradley, the University of Denver and St. Louis University). “If I see a teammate feeling down, I do what I can to lift her spirits.

“I notice everybody’s emotions, and I

try to settle a teammate down if that’s necessary.”

Among Perlman’s other assets as a teammate is a delightful side of her that surfaces when it’s necessary.

“She has this great, hidden sense of humor,” Peterson says. “When you hear it you’re reminded that she has a really neat perspective on life.”

Notable: Kukoc pounded 17 kills and four aces and finished with 15 digs in HP’s defeat of Niles North on Sept. 22.

Giants middle blocker Mattie Giese contributed five kills and five aces, while Beana Yanovskaya authored four aces, including two straight that upped HP’s lead to 15-6 in the third set. … Visiting HP downed Deerfield 25-14, 25-11 on Sept.

17. … Kukoc, a volleyball recruit, is looking at Miami (Ohio) University, Iowa and Wake Forest. ■

The Scouts had four players — Jack Garrity, Quinn Gaughan, Alex Georges and Elliot Georges — come up with those wonderfully repetitive results in their 152-188 victory over Zion-Benton at Shepherds Crook on Sept. 18.

On Sept. 17, Garrity was the medalist (38) as LF took care of North Shore Country Day 158-166 at Northmoor.

Gaughan and Ale Raganelli carded 39s for the Scouts.

Loyola: Highlighted by Bennett Cotten’s 72, the Ramblers claimed runnerup honors (304) at Providence Invite on Sept. 13. The host school took first place with a 295. LA’s other top scorers were Michael Banas (76), Tyler Aldrich (77) and Billy Boesen (79).

New Trier: Three players — Will Connelly, Andrew Huber and Will Seaman — shot 33s to lead the Trevians to decisive 133-152 win over Niles West on Sept. 18 at Willow Hill.

GIRLS GOLF

Decatur Eisenhower Invite: Three players — Louise McCulloch (2nd, 75), Lois Suh (6th, 77) and Becca Lindblad (10th, 80) — finished in the top 10 as New Trier claimed the team title with a 315.

Lauren Holly shot an 83, while Rachel Rhee added an 85.

Led by Blake Yaccino (78), Loyola claimed runner-up honors with a 330, which was four strokes better than Barrington. The other scorers were Margaret Hickey (83), Nina Rutkowski (84) and Madison Banas (85).

In other action last week, the Ramblers topped Evanston 155-162.

Highland Park: In a tight battle against a couple of rivals, the Giants shot a 176 to edge Deerfield (178) and Glenbrook South (179) on Sept. 17 at the Deerfield Golf Club. HP’s Nicole Berardi took medalist honors with a 39. The other scorers were Zoe Zirlin (44), Danielle Cohen (46) and Emma Hanig (47).

THE RUNDOWN BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Libertyville Invite: Highland Park’s Brett Davidson raced to a first-place finish in this 10-team meet at Adler Park on Sept. 20. He won the race by seven seconds, while second place went down to the wire with Lake Forest’s Mark Myers (16:16.76) and Highland Park’s Ben Casey (16:17.58).

Highland Park took third in the team standings with 96 points, while Prospect (42) wound up beating New Trier (59) for the team title. Josh Derrick paced the Trevians (5th, 16:29). Zach Schreier (11th, 16:39), Charlie Maher (14th, 16:49), Jack Solon (16th, 16:52) and Jeremy Glickman (17th, 16:56) also counted in the scoring.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Libertyville Invite: Highlighted the first-place finish of Mimi Smith, New Trier claimed top honors in this 14-team invite on Sept. 20 at Adler Park. Smith cruised the coarse in 18:02.37 to win by 43 seconds. The Trevians, who scored 29 points to beat runner-up Lockport by 23 points, also received solid work from Grace Fagen (4th, 18:58), Cara Keleher (5th, 19:02), Kelli Schmidt (9th, 19:20), Caroline Fix (10th, 19:21), Katie Glew (11th, 19:24) and Oona Jung-Beeman (12th, 19:25).

Highland Park finished sixth with 159 points. Marni Pine (23rd, 20:16), Rachel Powers (29th, 21:09) and Lily Hanig (32nd, 21:19) led the way.

Highland Park: The Giants came away with a 1-1 tie against Niles North on Sept. 18. Zach Kohn scored the lone goal for HP. On Sept. 16, the Giants defeated Mather 6-2. Ethan Ochoa sparked the win with two goals. Kohn had one goal and one assist.

Lake Forest: According to coach Rob Parry, the Scouts (4-8-1) played their best game of the season in a 4-3 setback to Warren on Sept. 18. Hunter Moore, Keegan Kullby and John O’Connor scored the goals. The assists belonged to Kullby and Moore.

In other action, the Scouts fell to Mundelein 5-0 on Sept. 16 and Evanston 2-0 in a weather-shortened game on Sept. 20.

Loyola: Despite putting together another solid effort, the Ramblers (1-7) were unable to finish and fell to Schurz 2-0 on Sept. 18.

“This has been our season,” said LA head coach Robert Etheridge. “We dominate the game for periods of time, but we don’t capitalize and then gift our opponents with goals.”

Walter Haracz, Sean Hickey and Will Reichart came up with strong performances in the loss.

New Trier: The Trevians (9-2-2) just missed advancing to the PepsiCo Showdown, when they fell 1-0 to Lyons Township on Sept. 20. The Trevians made the Final Four after downing visiting Lane Tech 1-0 on a goal by Matt Gallo on Sept. 18. Spencer Farina got the assist, while goalie Jonathan Jaggard got the shutout.

NT got off to a good start in this tourney by winning 3-1 decisions over Solorio Academy on Sept. 13 and Wheaton North on Sept. 16. Steven Childs (PK), Jamey Minturn and Duncan Gill tallied the goals against Wheaton North. Farina was credited with two assists.

FOOTNOTES CLUB SOCCER

Eclipse Elite 2016: Zoe Redei, a junior at Highland Park High School, came up with a hat trick in her team’s 7-0 win over the Sockers in the opening round of the Elite Clubs National League season on Sept. 13. The Eclipse U-17 squad also defeated St. Louis Scott Gallagher 4-1 on Sept. 14.

POOLSIDE GIRLS SWIMMING

Lake Forest: The Scouts won 11 of 12 events on their way to a 131-54 victory over Mundelein on Sept. 18.

Individual champs included Lanigan in the 100 breast (1:20.63), Vondra in the 200 IM (2:40.36), Wieland in the 50 free (30.12), Olivia Lomax in the 200 free (2:18.59), Laura Gottschalk in the 100 fly (1:13.23), Grace Donahue in the 100 free (1:05.80), Robin Bender in the 400 free (4:55.69) and Ella Needler in the 100 back (1:14.24).

New Trier: Highlighted by Nicole Retondo, Brittany Bishop and Mia Haggerty, the Trevians took first place in every event on their way to a 148-38 victory over Stevenson on Sept. 19. Retondo came away with wins in the 200 IM (a state cut time of 2:10.67) and 100 free (55.29). Bishop took first in the 50 free (24.82) and 100 fly (59.33). Mia Haggerty was first in the 200 free (1:57.89) and 500 free (5:12.49). The other winners were Rebecca Stern in diving (227.10), Katy Christian in the 100 back (1:00.82) and Hope Hayward in the 100 breast (a state cut time of 1:06.95). Christian, Hayward, Bishop and Morgan Conley also beat the IHSA standard in the 200 medley relay (1:49.12).

DROP SHOTS GIRLS TENNIS

Lake Forest: The No. 3 doubles tandem of Alia Alsikafi and Ali Davidson

came up with LF’s best finish at the Deerfield Invite on Sept. 13. They won two of three matches to take third place.

Sofie Koppmann and Sarah Geldermann took fourth at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Laurel Tesar was fourth at No. 1 while Julianna Roman was fourth at No. 2.

Rain washed away most of the action at the York Invite.

AT THE NET GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Loyola: The Ramblers improved to 11-2 overall with a 25-12, 15-15 victory over Zion-Benton on Sept. 18. Olivia Van Zelst led the team with eight kills and three blocks.

On Sept. 16, LA topped Fenwick 25-21, 25-18. Lauren Stadler had eight digs. Katie Randolph finished with 22 assists, while Christina Reed had six kills.

New Trier: Despite sitting out of the last match with an ankle injury, senior Sarah Shafiq put up some impressive numbers (33 kills, 11 blocks) at the Mother McAuley Invite on Sept. 19-20.

The Trevians (8-5) went 3-2 and finished fifth in the Silver Pool.

The other hitting leaders were Erin Denham (20 kills, 3 blocks), Callie Fauntleroy (16 kills, 6 blocks) and Allyson Vaughn (16 kills, 5 blocks).

The team had three setters split time: Caroline Pearson (29 assist), Alex Cook (21 assists) and Meghan Riordan (26 assists).

In other action last week, NT defeated Waukegan 25-5, 25-9.

■ by david sweet When away from his desk at WTTW in the 1990s, Geoffrey Baer served as a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation, presenting architectural history tours on the river. Oftentimes, once the excursion ended, people would come up and ask questions.

One day, a tall man engaged him. He asked questions — one after another.

Finally, the man’s wife said to her husband, “Do you want to tell him who you are?’ “ It was John McCarter, chairman of WTTW. The next day, he called a producer and suggested that Baer be assigned a show based on his cruises along the river.

Up until that time, Baer — who had worked at ABC and NBC affiliates — always served as a television producer, never an onair talent. Since his “Chicago by Boat” show debuted in 1995, his face has been everywhere on Channel 11 — from “Chicago’s Loop: a New Walking Tour” to “Biking the Boulevards,” among many others. The shows have garnered more than $6 million in funding from corporations, foundations, and viewers — and are consistently among the most watched programs in WTTW’s schedule.

That success is especially astounding when one considers Baer’s first show. After travelling on a white boat during a blindingly sunny day, with a television light flashing in his face for hours, he awakened in the middle of the night — and couldn’t open his eyes.

“It was excruciating pain,” he recalls. “I went into the hospital, and the nurse said, ‘We see this all the time. You sunburned your corneas.’ “ Geoffrey Baer illustration by barry blitt Despite that inauspicious start and his behind-the-camera history, Baer’s move to the other side made sense. A stalwart during plays at Deerfield High School (he cites drama teacher

Irene Kramsky as a major influence) and armed with a masters in theater from Northwestern University, “performing has never been a foreign thing to me,” says the 58-year-old, who even trained at Second City at one point.

Much has changed since “Chicago by Boat” started, back when a minute-long standup from Baer in his casual, easygoing style was common.

A die-hard city dweller until his family’s move to Evanston three years ago, Baer was stunned how much he enjoyed writing and hosting six historical programs about the suburbs for WTTW. “I thought I’d be in purgatory. I found that it was fascinating,” says Baer, who attended Lincoln School in Highland Park. “You never hear about the south suburbs except for crime. But it’s an epic story of American industry, from steel mills to labor unrest — it was rich in Greek tragedy.”

Baer would like to host a show entitled “Chicago on Vacation,” an examination of grand spots such as Lake Geneva. And last year, Baer expanded his scope well beyond the area. He hosted “10 Buildings that Changed America” for PBS, visiting everything from Trinity Church in Boston to the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, where he interviewed architect Frank Gehry.

“He said, ‘I’m grouchy — I’m going to give a terrible interview,’ “ Baer recalls. “When the camera started rolling, he was brilliant. When we asked if he could give us a tour, we could barely get the camera out of the tripod to follow him, he was moving so fast.”

More “10 that Changed America” projects are on the drawing board, including homes and city parks, which fit perfectly with Baer’s lifelong passion for architecture. It was buoyed by an architectural drafting class at Deerfield High School and an “eye-opening” history of urban development class during his junior year in Luxembourg through Miami University in Ohio.

“These are dream projects, seeing these incredible works of design and architecture,” he says.

And to think those dreams may have never come to pass had it been pouring rain on theCoolSculpting Chicago River one day.
