EDITOR’S NOTE

THIS MONTH I WILL BE

Welcome to our September fall fashion issue. We kick off with a fashion photo shoot at The Gardens at 900 in Lake Forest. The beautifully curated estate of landscape architect Craig Bergmann and designer Paul Klug provided the perfect setting for our fashionable frolic. Our second feature highlights Nicole Carrabine and Lauren Peters, the new owners of the Lake Forest Shop. Nicole and Lauren are carrying on the legacy of the late Ellen Stirling, who led the boutique to its 100th anniversary in 2022. The ladies plan to introduce fresh, new brands alongside the shop’s elegant offerings—pop in to see what’s new. Leaving the storefront and heading to the stage, our third feature catches up with Mesirow’s Ellie Forman who continues her two-year term as President of The Joffrey Ballet’s Women’s Board. Ellie reveals the board’s fundraising endeavors and gives us a sneak peek at the upcoming season. Swapping ballet slippers for walking shoes, our fourth feature celebrates the 52nd year of the Cooks’ Tour—continuing a tradition of camaraderie for a great cause on September 20th. The event is a project of The Auxiliary of the Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center and raises funds to help support RUSH’s concentrated investments in the areas most likely to improve the health of our region. We conclude the features with a tribute to John D. Nichols Jr., a great man who left an enduring legacy that will touch the lives of generations to come. We celebrate the life of the brilliant businessman, philanthropist, leader, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

VISITING

My daughter’s 19th birthday

Shore vs. City introduces Winnetka’s Jen Hasley, a nurse and mother of four. Jen shares her hot spots both on the shore and around the city. The State of Fashion checks in with Bunny & Babe founder Peyton Merrill, who shares news of the boutique’s expansion. Designer Spotlight highlights renowned Chicago designer Maria Pinto as she updates us on her boutique’s recent move and the brand’s evolution. Moving

from dressing room to dark room, Art & Artist takes us to Glencoe’s Anne Loucks gallery and explores the upcoming Rodney Smith exhibit opening on the 29th. Smith’s brilliant and whimsical photography is a must-see this fall.

Trending introduces Alex Lyon Singer, Executive Director of the Lyon Family Foundation and a master of the subtle art of hosting exquisite parties. Alex gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of this year’s Hoosier Ball on October 27th—the city’s most fabulous affair!

Heading to Highland Park, Home Tour showcases a stunning redesign. Elizabeth Mollen updated a 1940s house making it the perfect home for a busy family of four. Parting Words highlights the great work of Evanston native Mary Jayne Gold. I loved the historical novel The Flight Portfolio and Netflix’s Transatlantic detailing Gold’s great courage. She and Varian Fry helped thousands of people, including artists Max Ernst and Marc Chagall, flee the Nazis during World War II. Cheers to an inspiring North Shore hero.

Wishing you all a festive fall!

SWEET TREATS

Terry’s Toffee, a gourmet toffee company, is relocating to Highland Park after more than 20 years in Chicago. The traditional family recipe that is the basis for their signature almond toffee covered in milk chocolate has developed over the years into several nut-free, dark, and white chocolate options. The award-winning recipe now incorporates unique gourmet flavor combinations, including Lavender Vanilla and Cinnamon Chipotle. With more flavors invented seasonally, there is always something new to try. All toffee is made in small batches onsite using premium ingredients, including Guittard chocolate. The new location is located at 1853 North 2nd Street, the former location of Panera Bread. Sweet Home Gelato will be relocating to share the space—making the debut doubly delicious. 100 DRESSES

In The Impossible Collection of Fashion—an Ultimate Collection format, handmade, oversized book—Valerie Steele flexes her curatorial muscle by showcasing the most iconic dresses of the 20th century. From Poiret to Pucci, Doucet to Dior, Vionnet to Valentino, Steele selects 100 dresses that caused a stir on the runway or at a soiree, ultimately inspiring new directions in fashion. Steele’s selections include Paul Poiret’s figure-liberating 1907 gown, Madame Grès’ sublimely draped goddess creation from 1938, Jean Paul Gaultier’s shockingly exaggerated “Cone Bust” Corset dress circa 1984, and Hussein Chalayan’s awe-inspiring, remote-control fiberglass “Airplane” dress from 2000. The compilation, while certainly subjective, is sure to receive nods of recognition along with a gasp or two of surprise. This limited-edition tome published by Assouline is housed in a linen clamshell box, and each purchase includes complimentary white gloves and a signature canvas tote bag. Happy reading. Step Two of the STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™

Divorce is complicated. And when you’re first starting out, it’s incredibly overwhelming. The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease the process. We believe knowledge provides strength and peace of mind. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™.

My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved, and two distinct steps where no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts.

Last month, we examined the first part of a custody agreement—decision-making. In this month’s column, we will examine the second part of a custody agreement—visitation.

It is essential that both parts of the custody agreement be outlined before any discussions regarding financials—child support, spousal support, or division of assets—occur.

Before any negotiations begin, we work with our clients to determine what parenting time they want, what they think will best meet their children’s needs, and what they think their spouse wants.

There was a perception that women were automatically granted more favorable visitation. In the past five years, we’ve seen a huge shift in the division of parenting time. Thanks to discussions surrounding a father’s rights and studies that show how kids benefit from having both parents involved in their lives, fathers are no longer forced into a minor parenting role.

Today, 50/50 visitation is much more common. For a judge to determine that one parent should be awarded more time, the attorney will need to advocate for a special schedule and give good reasons as to why the schedule is in the children’s best interests. Such reasons would include if one parent has substance abuse issues or is not home enough during the week to reasonably care for their kids or has work hours that make transportation to and from school difficult. The attorney may also argue for a special schedule if there is a significant distance between residences.

There are several different ways to determine who has the children each night. The best way is for the parents to work together to create a schedule that optimizes the quality time both parents have with their children. Some people feel that a looser schedule is more appropriate for their family because they may have an amicable co-parenting relationship and believe a visitation agreement will be too constricting. However, it is important to note that the court will not accept any agreement that doesn’t clearly outline where the children will be sleeping every night of the year.

Determining visitation can be a thorny process. Some parents are unable to agree on a schedule because the number of overnights each parent has during the year affects the amount of child support that is required to be paid. Other parents are unable to agree on a schedule because their anger and animosity prevent

them from being reasonable. In these cases, the court can appoint an attorney for the children and/or a psychological professional to evaluate the family’s situation and to help make the determination. Luckily, most parents understand that having an amicable co-parenting relationship and fostering positive connections with both parents is in the family’s best interests. Yet, in some cases hurt feelings or a desire to reduce the child support obligation take precedence. One parent may even actively try to turn the children against the other parent. In these situations, it is important to have a counsel who de-escalates the situation and helps the parties move toward a resolution, rather than an attorney who intensifies the conflict.

The custody agreement is a long, frequently complicated, and often emotionally exhausting process. But it’s usually the hardest part of the divorce, and once it is complete, the next three steps of the Strategic Divorce Process™ move more quickly.

MORE THAN SHE IMAGINED

Bunny & Babe owner Peyton Merrill expands her fashionable retail space to deliver top-notch customer service to women of all ages.

Winnetka’s Peyton Merrill grew up in the fashion world. Having worked her way up the ladder of a national retailer to running its 10,000-squarefoot store on Michigan Avenue and managing its 40 employees—she dreamed that one day she might have her own store.

That time finally came in February 2020.

“Can you believe my timing?” Merrill says with a quick laugh. But even a pandemic couldn’t stop her.

“My store manager and I used social media creatively and did our best to stay connected to our customers even when our store was closed,” she says. “So, when COVID was over—really over— our business exploded. I felt like we just outgrew our original space at 555 Chestnut.”

When a retail neighbor, two doors down, decided to close, the timing was in Merrill’s favor.

“The store space was just an amazing shell,” Merrill says. “With a little decorating, we were able to open in three months.”

But Merrill’s desire to expand still wasn’t satisfied.

“Once we opened, I realized how much I wanted the storefront in the middle,” she says. “Having the two stores separated by another tenant wasn’t easy. It was hard for our customers—and hard

on our staff—to go back and forth between the two. I was finally able to negotiate with the neighboring owner and now Bunny & Babe is as I always hoped it would be.”

Today, Bunny & Babe can dress young women from the seventh grade into their seventies and beyond. They also offer beautiful home accessories and gifts.

“We really are known for our dresses,” Merrill explains. “Everything from casual day dresses to cocktail and wedding attire. We try to visit New York six times a year on buying trips, in addition to Dallas and Atlanta. The root of who we are is very classic, but we keep our finger on the pulse of new, feminine lady-like brands that are just emerging so that we can offer them before anyone else.”

The expansion has lent itself to Bunny & Babe unveiling its newest concept for its younger customers—Violet.

“Violet is a focused collection for our high school to college-aged girls,” Merrill explains. “We think the name Violet fits so nicely with our signature colors of lavender and light blue.”

Merrill and her team work tirelessly on their merchandise displays. “I think one of the reasons the store does so well is because we pay careful attention to aesthetics,” she notes. “We try to keep things fresh because we know the details matter.”

Merrill also believes the extra space will support the level of customer service her team strives to provide.

“We do our best to welcome each customer into our store and find out how we can be of assistance,” she shares. “If a customer just wants to come in, look around, and not be bothered—that’s fine with us. But most people who walk into our store are looking for something. Our goal is to be helpful.

I think this makes such a difference to our customers, and this is a huge priority for us. We don’t like a customer to leave without feeling completely satisfied.”

While Merrill knows that many women want an in-store shopping experience, some value the convenience of an e-commerce site.

“We’ve completely revamped the website for our store and have a dedicated e-commerce team,” Merrill explains. “Customers can literally buy just about anything we have in our store from the website. Instagram is the main feeder for our e-com business. Everything is always linked as we try to make it easy for our customers to shop. We’re happy to make free local deliveries and are so excited to see our business grow nationally. This is such a great opportunity for us.”

The next logical question for Merrill is, what’s next?

“You know what? I’m excited to slow down a bit and hone in on the details that we haven’t even had time to think about yet,” she says. “It’s time for the fun stuff—improving the flow of the store, hosting more pop-ups, perfecting our space—focusing on all of the little things that will make shopping at Bunny & Babe special. I can’t wait.”

INNOVATIVE & FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

Legendary Chicago-based fashion designer Maria Pinto has adorned countless leading women, including Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, with innovative yet functional designs. Pinto shares insights into her boutique’s recent move and the evolution of her collections.

1. Why the move?

The West Loop was home to my first store when we launched ten years ago. Today, our clients work, live or spend more time in the Gold Coast so, on the heels of the 10th anniversary, it felt like an opportune time to pursue a larger storefront in a new part of town.

2. How have you and your brand evolved over the last 10 years?

In concert with the move to my new Chicago storefront, the M2057 by Maria Pinto moniker that launched my ready-towear collection in 2013 has changed to Maria Pinto. The change symbolizes my continued transformation. Just as I encourage my clients to discover comfort and confidence in the diversity of their bodies and lives from year to year, I, too, try to boldly evolve and wanted to honor this new season of my career with the simplicity and realness of my name. I’ve always welcomed the freedom of moving into each moment of my life. It’s so critical that as women, we completely own the perfection of being ourselves at all stages. And really, I don’t believe in reinventing yourself. I am simply in a constant state of evolution.

3. What is today’s socially active, professional woman looking for in a style system?

I’d like to think that the garments I create are an essential staple for any active woman who consciously values her humble, yet powerful, place in the community. With a minimalist, architectural aesthetic for the everyday polished look, my clients love our “industrial meets elegant” pieces. They also lend to a seamless day-to-evening transition for the social professional. From neutral tones to vibrant monochromatic styles and artful prints, our designs are manufactured in the U.S. and crafted with fine European fabrics that are machine washable, stain resistant, wrinkle and fade-free with designs that stand the test of “style time.” These attributes alone speak to what women value today: time.

4. You launch new capsules nearly every two months. Where do you draw inspiration?

My inspiration comes from the environment all around me. Nature is definitely a big source, as you’ll see in several of our prints and even in the artwork that I personally create. As a trained artist, I am also fascinated by the use of color and patterns and am intrigued by the artistic works of others. Even architecture sparks ideas. I previously collaborated with architect Jeanne Gang to

create a capsule collection that was inspired by her architecture. Today, I am working on a capsule collection in partnership with Chicago artist Amanda Williams, who has gained a tremendous amount of well-deserved acclaim for her studies in color. That collection will launch in 2024.

5. Pro Tip: You are traveling on a 2-day business trip, with an extra day of leisure tacked on. What are you packing?

I hear from clients all the time that they love traveling with Maria Pinto because of the pieces’ malleability and the ability to pack just a few staples. For a business trip, you can’t go wrong with our Zadie pant, a straight-leg pant that has a flattering elegance. The Vedder skirt is another favorite—a high-waisted piece with a soft A-line cut that reads pencil but brings some sway and shape as you move. Both garments are ideal for a business meeting with pumps followed by a dinner date with strappy heels when paired with one of our tops or jackets. The Delphine dress is so much fun and comfortable for everything from weddings to business to sightseeing. Its presence is beautiful and easy to take up or down with chic heels or a charming flat. And lastly, I always recommend traveling with a lightweight jacket. Our Hopper coat has been in massive demand. This mid-length jacket is light and airy—lending an ideal shape for layering. You can belt it for a cinched fit and even remove the bottom panel for a shorter cut. Wear it dressy or toss it over jeans and a tee for an effortless fashion statement while on the go.

THE SPONTANEITY OF STYLE

A new exhibition at Anne Loucks Gallery casts light on the masterful photography of Rodney Smith.

Rodney Smith’s iconic photographs exert a gravitational pull. These are not images that rest quietly on walls. They beg to be looked at, pulling you in with their stunning technical perfection and evocations of exuberance, mystery, whimsy, heroism, and vulnerability. Whether Smith’s subjects were a couple clasping hands above a tiny blue Fiat in Amalfi, a man improbably leaping over a massive roll of hay in the fields of Maryland, or a woman balancing majestically on a seaplane’s wing in the Dominican Republic, the photographer’s exquisite prints shimmer with natural light and feature gorgeous settings framing moments of spontaneity, romance, and reflection.

“I want people to see the beauty and whimsy in life, not its ugliness,” Smith once said of his work. “I feel the need to reach out for its soul, its depth, and its underlying beauty. I represent a world that is possible if people act their best.”

The photographer is the subject of a new exhibition at Anne Loucks Gallery in Glencoe that runs from September 29 to November 30. Rodney Smith: Leap of Faith features 24 examples of the artist’s work from 1994–2014, in both color and black & white. The show title is a nod to the recent release of the Getty Museums’ retrospective monograph, Rodney Smith: A Leap of

Faith. The book’s author, Getty photography curator Paul Martineau, will be at the opening reception Friday, September 29th from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

“For the exhibition, we’ve focused on the narrative elements of his work—the storytelling, the style, and humor,” says gallery owner Anne Loucks. “The images included are striking in their beauty and magical light and at the same time, they draw you in and invite you to look twice. Rodney’s brilliance is evident in the compositions filled with spontaneity, wit, and a touch of surprise.”

The humor and creativity that Loucks speaks of are deftly on display in Reed Floating Above Giant Top Hat, which was shot in Amenia, New York, two years before the artist’s passing at age 68 in 2016. Smith shunned any manipulation of his images, which makes the surreal loftiness in the photo all the more mesmerizing. With its dueling top hats and leaping figure, it’s a nod to René Magritte as well as photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson who was a significant influence.

Smith was born on Christmas Eve 1947 in New York City to parents from the hamlet of Woodmere, Long Island. He attended Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut and fell in love with English literature. But it was a visit to the Museum of Modern Art during his college years in 1967 that inspired Smith’s decision to become a photographer. He saw works by Cartier-Bresson, André

Kertész, and Dorothea Lange that stoked the creativity that had been burgeoning within him.

“My life was never the same again,” said Smith of the trip. “I looked at those pictures repeatedly, getting more and more excited, and saying and feeling to myself ‘I can do this. This is for me. This is my life.’”

After he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1970, much to his parents’ chagrin he earned a master’s degree in theology from Yale University, while minoring in photography under famed photojournalist and photographer Walker Evans.

But Smith got off to an auspicious start. Upon graduation, he received a Jerusalem Foundation Fellowship to document the diverse cultures in the Middle East. His images from the time are photojournalistic in style and reminiscent of the work of his teacher, Evans. Following this documentary phase, he was commissioned to take portraits of corporate leaders like the CEOs of H.J. Heinz, Merrill Lynch, and Northrop Grumman. From there, Smith found a calling in fashion photography, shooting for Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus among

many others, and forged long-term working relationships with W, Vanity Fair, New York magazine, The New York Times, and leading fashion publications throughout the ‘90s. Over time, Smith transitioned to more personal work, indulging his creativity fully, often shooting at his beloved Hudson River Valley home in Snedens Landing an hour outside Manhattan.

Smith’s work has gained the attention of curators around the country and is now included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, the Getty Museum, and many others.

Loucks lived in New York in the early nineties and recalls Smith’s work for fashion houses and major publications back then. “He was an artist whom I admired for many years,” she says. “The more I saw and read about his work, the more I fell in love with it. He was a master of both the art and science of photography. He

He would work through different ideas on a photo shoot to get the perfect composition, playing around with scale, proportion, light, and movement, as well as the emotional response to a setting. His work was shot only using film and natural light. Nothing was ever digitally enhanced or manipulated. He liked the depth and richness he felt he could only get with film shooting.”

Surveying some of the work in the exhibition, Loucks’ longheld appreciation is clear. In Jimmy Standing in the Ocean Wearing Sunglasses, she notes the humor, irony, and spectacle of the unexpected scene of Smith’s model submerged while wearing a

suit. “He knew the light and reflection at this moment in time,” she says, pointing out nuances in the image. “There’s so much to look at in each of his prints. At first glance, they’re captivating in their beauty, but when you get closer and study them, you’re really in awe of the magic and creativity.”

In Saori Standing in a Boat, which has a wonderful complexity belying its simple veneer, Loucks notes how the composition and background light uplift the viewer. “There’s so much joy and promise. He worked with these beautiful settings and he was aware of the majesty of the place, the light, the color, the atmosphere. He had a profound connection to the world around him, and at the same time was always interested in the human story behind his photographs.”

Indeed, one need only read Smith’s own words about what photography meant to him to better understand the power of his images: “I go out in the world. I breathe in its notoriety and humor, to be able to see clearer, to look for understanding and purpose, to open up, to reach exuberantly and unforgivingly for the light.”

TALKING TIME: HINDMAN’S SEAN JOHNSON TAKES US BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE WATCH WORLD

Sheridan Road (SR): Can you tell us what sparked your interest in watches?

Sean Johnson (SJ): I grew up in Geneva, Switzerland, the historical epicenter of horology and where time is an intrinsic part of the Swiss DNA. Being on time is a fundamental element in Swiss culture, so watches and clocks naturally play an important role in our everyday life.

Growing up next to some of the most important watch manufacturers like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Richemont brands, certainly inspired my passion for watches. Living outside of Switzerland has also given me a deeper appreciation for Swiss timekeeping engineering and its impact around the world.

SR: We hear you are quite the traveler and have lived in several countries.

and typically hunt for watches during latenight online bidding. I love discovering new makers—there is definitely room for disruption and new watch concepts! It’s sometimes hard for me to separate my work from my passion for the industry.

SR: What are some watch brands to watch out for?

SJ: Throughout my career and life, I’ve been fortunate to reside in many different countries—I have lived in 20 countries and traveled to more than 100—but I’ve always brought a Swiss mindset with me. In some ways, I feel that I have become a personal ambassador to Switzerland.

SR: How did you begin your career?

SJ: Following my undergraduate degree, I attended GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the premier institution for those interested in jewelry. My first job was at a diamond trading company in Barcelona. I eventually ended up on 47th Street in New York City in my early 20s, which was a true turning point in my career. I honed my skills in how to authenticate, buy and sell, price, and negotiate, and eventually ended up moving into the auction world.

SR: What have been some of the most memorable watches in your personal collection?

SJ: The IWC Portuguese was the first major watch I ever purchased. I guess you could say it was my first “grown-up” watch. I bought it because I truly loved it, and I always encourage collectors to genuinely love what they buy. The watch I’m wearing currently (as seen in the image) is a Rolex GMT-Master II, nicknamed the “Batman.” I bought this one in 2017, back when it was still possible to buy these watches right off the shelf. I also have a soft spot for small European and Asian brands

SJ: The most sought-after watches are usually from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille (“the big four”). Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, and Jaeger-LeCoultre also do well at auction depending on the model, year of manufacture, and of course, the condition of the watch. For women looking for watches, a classic Rolex Datejust or a Patek Philippe Calatrava are always a good choice. Watches by independent manufacturers, such as F.P.Journe, De Bethune, and MB&F, have been performing exceptionally well at auctions in recent years.

SR: Tips for collectors?

SJ: Buy what you love, and love what you buy. Don’t fall into the misperception that every watch is an “investment.” Collecting watches is a journey. It’s about finding watches that bring you joy and appreciating the artistry and storytelling behind the piece. I encourage new collectors to learn about the history of watchmaking and the crucial role timekeeping has played in society. There is a true savoir-faire to watchmaking, being passed down from generation to generation, which I think is underappreciated.

SR: What have you been focused on at Hindman since you joined the firm last year?

SJ: There has been so much growth in the last decade in the world of pre-owned watches, and Hindman is poised to become a leading house for collectors to buy and sell some of the rarest and most desirable watches. My focus has been curating sales that feature exceptional collections and models from around the world while building a robust network of collectors throughout the country and beyond.

Hindman will present a single owner watch auction at 9 a.m. and a various owner watch auction at 1 p.m. on October 18. Bidding will be available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room, bid.hindmanauctions.com.

Time never stands still. And for many of us, space isn’t a constant either. The closet under the stairs becomes a powder room. That unused attic? Meet the man cave. And now that you’ve walked your daughter down the aisle, wouldn’t her old room make a perfect office? Unless we up and move with every change in life, our homes—with a little nudging—grow with us.

When a couple with two young boys decided their Highland Park home needed an update, they turned to Elizabeth Mollen of Chicago-based Stone Textile Studio. The layout of their 1940s house didn’t offer the flow they were after, but with some sympathetic tweaking the interiors became more conducive to the family’s active, relaxed lifestyle. “We retooled the space to create an open plan, making the kitchen and family room more connected,” says Mollen, who began her career in textiles before expanding into interior design. She also carved out some space from the kitchen to fashion a much-needed mudroom and transformed the basement from four hard-to-use rooms into one big space that functions as a media center and playroom.

Good looks and functionality drove the kitchen design in equal measure. “Our clients are avid cooks and love entertaining, so a large durable island with a huge sink was key,” says Mollen. “The sink faces the family room so everyone can be in one place during the crazy dinner time rush.” Mollen topped the island with a durable black quartzite and outfitted the space with custom shiplap cabinetry. A custom, L-shaped banquette and a table from RH form a comfortable, sunlit seating area. Throughout, a palette of white and taupe/gray gives the kitchen a crisp yet warm air.

Black, white, and earth tones pervade the home, punctuated with eye-popping bold strokes of pattern and color. A fanciful lama wallpaper brightens the laundry room, while a green snakeskin wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries gives the dining room just the right touch of formality. The children’s bedrooms are awash in beautiful blue wall coverings from Kelly Wearstler.

Lighting gets special attention in spaces, from the almost sea creature-like pendant over the custom dining table to the marvelously sculptural vintage piece that stands in the curve of the entry hall staircase. The remarkably elevated sunroom sports an upholstered bench from CB2 with a vaguely Art Deco base and a wonderfully at-ease sofa that swings from the ceiling. Altogether, this re-envisioned home is a pleasing balance of high style and livability, the classic millwork and contemporary lines of the furnishings creating a substantive but far from stuffy ambiance.

“These were fun clients who really appreciate design and the creativity process,” says Mollen. “They came with some general ideas, but let me help them explore possibilities and were open to new ideas. They wanted to have fun while keeping the design timeless with pieces they will love forever. They were open to taking design risks, which is every designer’s dream.”

GREAT SCOTT

Lake Forest interior designer Elizabeth Scott shares her favorite aspects of a recent North Shore design project.

For nearly two decades, Elizabeth Scott, the mastermind behind Elizabeth Scott Design Group (ESDG), has been cultivating clients’ visions. Whether it be a new build or remodel, Scott uses the power of design to create one-of-a-kind homes from coast to coast that are both eye-catching and functional. The ESDG crew recently added a beautiful renovation in the heart of Lake Forest to their growing list of revamped homes on the North Shore. The team was able to adorn each room with intricate yet timeless details, rendering a redesign to remember. This design maven shares her insights about the project with Sheridan Road

What is the great room’s main focal point?

There are beautiful views at every angle in the room, but I do love the main fireplace wall with the built-in cabinetry. We started with simple white cabinetry and added a wood-veneered,

chevron-patterned Maya Romanoff wallcovering in the back of the open shelves to add warmth and texture. We also used picture lights to set off the great accessories and incorporated leather loop pulls on the base cabinets.

What is your favorite detail in the great room?

That’s a hard question as I have several. I love the custom rug; it was one of the first things we started with—the color is a beautiful, muted peacock blue and has an amazing unique pattern. We created it with our friends at Lapchi at the Merchandise Mart. It was made in Kathmandu by an amazing artist who has a way with using high and low patterns with gorgeous texture. Then, I’d have to say the blue swivel chairs—the pattern is so fun. Almost everything in this room is custom, which gave us the freedom to have very comfortable sofas and chairs made in the exact fabrics we selected.

Great room SHERIDAN ROAD 80 DESIGN SPOTLIGHT

DESIGN SPOTLIGHT

Were you most excited about displaying particular decorative pieces?

Yes, the family has traveled extensively throughout the world, which made each piece so meaningful to showcase. We used many of their items from China, Africa, and Brazil and then filled in with other pieces to balance the colors.

How is the color scheme carried throughout the house?

We used varying shades of blue to have a subtle common thread throughout the open floor plan. You will find the main staircase’s custom runner actually ties the first floor together. Its custom colors, weave, and pattern marries all the cream and blue tones together, and best of all it is very durable. We worked with our long-time partners at Oscar Iberian Rugs, who used their London weavers.

What detail in the kitchen stands out most to you?

The existing kitchen made for a great palette to add in sleek swivel stools and new cabinetry hardware, along with the beautiful custom starburst table and chairs. We finished with a couple of key accessories that enhanced the simplicity of the room.

What is your favorite aspect about the office?

The wallcovering and custom credenza. The wallcovering has a subtle linen texture. The light powder blue color is so soft and contrasts beautifully with the silver rivets, especially with the white wainscoting paneling below. We also loved creating the credenza that holds their printer and other office must-haves. The works of art are by some of my favorite artists, including Yvette Lenzi.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

Skyline window coverings has you covered.

Whether you’re working on one room or an entire house, Chrissy Roellchen and her team at Skyline Window Coverings have got you beautifully covered. With decades of experience, they offer a seamless process for selecting the perfect window treatments. “Functionality is what comes first and foremost,” Roellchen explains. “However, the style and transformative power of gorgeous window treatments are not far behind.”

After receiving a degree in design, Roellchen worked for more than ten years for a Kansas City boutique design store that specialized in window treatments.

When she relocated to Chicago, she decided it was time to set up her own shop. “Because I knew industry leader Hunter Douglas so well and had sold their product for a really long time, I decided our shop would work with one brand,” she explains.

“Hunter Douglas has the best quality products and the best warranties. Its window treatments are handcrafted in North America and are well-known and loved for their consistent quality and impeccable style. The company stands behind its product, which makes it really easy for us to stand behind the product as well,” Roellchen says.

Choosing a window treatment is often a room’s finishing touch and is usually one of the last steps in the design process. When working with a new client, a Skyline designer will visit the client’s home to see the room, windows, and all existing elements that should be taken into consideration. Clients receive the expertise of a large design firm delivered with the customer service experience of a boutique. “We have experienced, in-home consultants. Many clients appreciate seeing the fabric in the room where it will be located, under the room’s lighting, and amongst the existing furniture,” notes Roellchen.

Skyline’s commitment to a streamlined purchasing process sets it apart from the competition. “We try to do everything in one appointment. During a site visit, we’ll measure, make recommendations about the products that might work best, and review the budget,” Roellchen explains.

Skyline has state-of-the-art showrooms in the city as well as Winnetka. These showrooms offer clients excellent insight into the current design trends. Roellchen observes that “soft shades” are especially popular now because they bring an understated elegance to the room while gently diffusing light. “Some clients prefer to come into the showroom. For clients who want to browse, we recommend a showroom visit first and then if they’d like us to visit the site, we schedule an appointment,” Roellchen notes.

And while the Midwest is their hub, they also have stores in Portland and just outside of Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Skyline intentionally avoids describing themselves as being the “biggest in Chicago” or “Chicago’s Number 1 Hunter Douglas Retailer.” “We make no such claim,” says Roellchen. “We make an everyday promise to our clients to be in vigorous pursuit of the best. Our logo isn’t finished because we always believe we can be better. More improved. Always rising.”

The Lake Forest Shop’s new owners embrace the iconic fashion retailer’s century-long legacy while infusing it with modern sensibilities.

The front door of The Lake Forest Shop is propped open. Its new owners—Lake Forest’s Nicole Carrabine and Lauren Peters— would love for you to drop in and see what they’ve been up to.

Last spring, Carrabine and Peters purchased The Lake Forest Shop from the Stirling family. Ellen Stirling shepherded the fashion retailer, founded by her grandmother, to its 100th anniversary in September 2022. Just a few months after the shop’s anniversary celebration, Stirling lost her battle with a long-term illness.

“Buying The Lake Forest Shop isn’t something we entered into lightly,” Peters says. “Truthfully, it was intimidating not to be a family member and think we could take over a brand that was so closely tied to Ellen. She was so loved by her customers who were incredibly loyal to her. It was hard to imagine The Lake Forest Shop without her.”

But neither Carrabine nor Peters could imagine Lake Forest without The Lake Forest Shop.

“Lauren and I both have such strong connections to this community,” Carrabine says. “The idea of continuing something that has been such a big part of our town felt really good.”

It was part serendipity and part perfect storm that Carrabine and Peters came together on this endeavor. While both had a deep love of fashion, neither one knew the other might be interested in opening a store.

“Having my own store is all I have ever wanted to do professionally,” says Peters. “I was finally at a time in my life where my

children were old enough for me to consider taking on something so big.”

“One day,” Carrabine continues, “Lauren came to me and asked if I’d like to open a store with her. Like Lauren, the timing was perfect for me, too. The idea of opening a store on my own was pretty scary, but with Lauren, I knew there were real possibilities.”

The universe may have been hard at work, already bringing Carrabine and Peters together around the idea of opening a clothing store in Market Square, when the opportunity to buy The Lake Forest Shop was presented.

“Honestly, we weren’t sure it would work, but something kept telling us that we should do it,” Peters says. “And we are so glad that we did.”

The duo got right to work. While The Lake Forest Shop’s incredible team held down the fort (the familiar faces from Stirling’s team continue at the Shop), Carrabine and Peters went on their first buying trips. Their strategy: to build upon the shop’s existing special occasion business while incorporating their ideas for contemporary ready-to-wear.

“Under Ellen’s leadership, The Lake Forest Shop really became a destination for special occasion shopping,” Carrabine explains. “We have clients from all over the Midwest come for a one-of-akind dress that can be custom fit by our alterations staff. That’s an exciting part of the business that we plan to grow.”

While most buying for summer ready-to-wear had long finished by the time Carrabine and Peters took the reins, that didn’t stop them from looking for new lines they could introduce.

“Finding new brands that haven’t been available locally has been surprisingly satisfying,” Peters says. “It’s definitely been

SHERIDAN ROAD 101

challenging. There has been a lot of knocking on doors and being persistent, but when we fall in love with a line that we’re unfamiliar with, it feels like more of a find. It makes it even more special.”

ANINE BING, Max Mara, Zimmermann, Lela Rose, Rosie Assoulin, and Silvia Tcherassi are a sampling of the new designers that will be sold at The Lake Forest Shop later this year. Additionally, shoes, belts, bags, beauty, apothecary, and fragrance will all be part of the shop’s new offerings. The Lake Forest Shop has also launched an e-commerce platform with digital styling tools for the customer who may not be local or simply wants the convenience of shopping online.

“The two of us truly love shopping,” Peters says. “There is something magical about a retailer who has a space that is beautiful, that smells good, that’s filled with pretty things. We love this when we shop and this is exactly the experience we want to create for our customers.”

While the vision Carrabine and Peters have for The Lake Forest Shop won’t come to fruition until later this fall, hints of their aesthetic are beginning to appear. The store has been freshly painted and a new coastal vibe has been introduced setting the stage for a beautifully curated boutique store for women, right in the heart of Lake Forest’s Market Square.

“I really believe that local retail is where people want to shop,” Peters says. “The more retail in our town, the better for all of us.”

DANCE FOR THE COMMON GOOD

Ellie Forman on the joy of the Joffrey and her role as President of the Women’s Board.

The pattern of Ellie Forman’s career is deeply embedded in the fabric of Chicago’s arts and nonprofit communities. A natural connector, she has spent the bulk of her career bringing people together for the common good. This fall she renews that mission in her second term as President of The Women’s Board of Chicago’s iconic Joffrey Ballet.

“When I moved to Chicago in my 20s and was starting to engage with the city and find my way, I navigated toward the Joffrey,” she says. “I started attending performances, and once I was exposed to the Joffrey, I was hooked.”

“Aside from the stories the dancers are telling through their dramatic physicality and the sets and visuals onstage at the Lyric Opera House, an unexpected but important piece for me has become the meditative and mindful moments of the ballet-watching experience. No phones, no fidgeting, no multitasking. For a busy mom and professional, watching the dancers gives me much-needed Zen time,” Forman explains.

Seeking to give something back, she joined Joffrey’s Women’s Board in 2014, co-chairing the Women’s Board Luncheon fundraiser. The board, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022, was created to increase support for The Joffrey Ballet and extend its impact as both a cultural and educational organization. The board’s all-female membership organizes vital fundraising efforts for the Joffrey.

Her affinity for the performing arts began as a child in St. Louis, where dance and musical theater were her hobbies and always a part of her zeitgeist. When she began her professional career in public affairs, Forman gravitated toward working with arts organizations, nonprofits, and universities.

“Eventually I came to realize that I was helping bring attention to partnerships that my nonprofit clients had with their corporate sponsors. And I thought to myself, ‘I could be the person at the table establishing these partnerships and leveraging corporate dollars to better our communities.’” This passion drew Forman to her current role as Senior Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Mesirow, a highly philanthropic global financial services firm.

In Forman’s first three years co-chairing the Women’s Board Luncheon with Kathleen Sarpy and Jamie-Clare Flaherty, she helped welcome 625 attendees, raising more than $160,000—a vital success for the ballet. From there, she continued to take on new roles within the board: secretary; co-chair of the Women’s Night at the Joffrey; and co-chair of the membership committee. Like many arts organizations, the Joffrey was not immune to

the impact of COVID pandemic-related closures. “With the loss of all ticket revenue, the Joffrey’s survival was dependent on philanthropic gifts from donors to ensure the long-term health of the ballet,” Forman says.

Facing this impasse head-on, Forman was tapped to co-chair the newly formed Crisis Stabilization Fund. “This was our project to help the Joffrey raise, in donations, the equivalent funding it would have raised through ticket sales, donations, and events.”

Alongside Jamie-Clare Flaherty and Farissa Knox, Forman helped organize strategic giving and virtual events. Ultimately, she helped raise $12 million for the Joffrey in philanthropic gifts over 18 months. Especially heartening for Forman was the 100 percent participation from all 148 of the Women’s Board’s members, raising more than $380,000 for the initiative.

Since then, the Joffrey has rebounded triumphantly. “We are seeing that seats are filled and people are coming back. The Joffrey is matching and enticing that interest level by bringing groundbreaking productions to audiences.”

In fact, the 2022–2023 season was one of its best. “Anna Karenina, which was the production in early spring, was the highest-grossing production other than The Nutcracker in Joffrey

history, followed by The Little Mermaid in April, which was the third-highest-grossing non-Nutcracker production.”

The upcoming 2023–2024 season features Frankenstein, the critically acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, opening October 12. October 26 is the annual Women’s Board Luncheon, chaired by Farissa Knox, Merritt DeWitt, and Cheryl Tama Oblander, with tickets, tables, and sponsorships available to all interested.

Forman considers the board’s increased and modernized participation a highlight of her role as President. “We’ve made a very cognizant and purposeful effort to stress the need for increased diversity on the board,” she says, “Our work in diversifying not only the Women’s Board but the Joffrey’s audiences will never be done; it’s an ongoing effort and commitment of the organization as a whole.”

When The Joffrey Ballet cemented its roots in Chicago in 1995, its ambition was to educate and inspire the community. Since then, the impact has flourished. Just one example is Joffrey Community Engagement, the leading dance education provider in the city of Chicago, with more than 93 programs in 26 schools throughout the Chicago Public School system.

“The goal is to bring in new audiences from all neighborhoods of Chicago to experience cutting-edge dance and art that is really pushing the envelope, which was always the vision of Robert Joffrey,” Forman says. “We want to continue to be there to drive that goal forward.”

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

The Auxiliary of the Woman’s Board of RUSH University Medical Center serves up four aspirational homes in their signature Cooks’ Tour fundraiser on September 20.

SHERIDAN ROAD 108
Tracey Lowry, Molly Foster, and Erica Chesney Co-Chairs of the Rush Auxiliary Board’s Cooks’ Tour

“It’s really amazing to think that this fundraiser started with a group of women inviting their friends to someone’s kitchen—to see how that family lived and raise money for their community’s hospital,” observes Erica Chesney, one of the three co-chairs for the 2023 Cooks’ Tour. “This is the 52nd year of this event and it’s incredible to think that at its core, this event hasn’t changed very much.”

North Shore Cooks’ Tour is a project of The Auxiliary of the Woman’s Board of RUSH University Medical Center. The Auxiliary and the Woman’s Board support the medical center’s outstanding patient care, research, and community outreach initiatives in the diverse communities that RUSH serves. In addition, they provide support and guidance to the Rush Junior Board, an active board of high school girls on Chicago’s North Shore. The Auxiliary also supports the Simpson Academy for Young Women’s mission to educate and empower young mothers to prepare them for success in college, career, and life.

“This year’s event has a little bit of a twist,” says co-chair Tracey Lowry, who joined the board a year ago at the urging of Chesney. “Coming out of COVID, we realized that families are living in

their homes differently than they were before. For this reason, we’re highlighting the homes of four very different—yet relatable—entrepreneurial women.”

Guests of the Cooks’ Tour will get a peek inside four impressive North Shore homes: a grand Georgian owned by the founder of a bespoke textile company; a 100-year-old home that has been lovingly restored by a recognized travel consultant; a celebrated interior designer’s reimagined 1960s colonial; and newly constructed modern farmhouse that was specifically designed for a woman who specializes in family therapy.

“It was so nice to work around this theme—to find these women entrepreneurs who were willing to open their homes for a good cause,” Lowry adds. “It is a big ask when we approach a homeowner to participate in Cooks’ Tour. It’s a vulnerable thing to have 700 people walk through a home that you have created for your family. But everyone has been so lovely and easy to work with.”

While each of these homes is vastly different from the others, there are some notable trends.

“You will see home offices, upstairs playrooms for the children, elaborate entertainment spaces in the basements for the adults, and pools,” adds co-chair Molly Foster, who served on the Junior Board for RUSH when she was in high school. “Everyone has a pool.”

It takes a village to pull off an event like Cooks’ Tour, and the planning committee is filled with gratitude for the support it has received from the entire Auxiliary Board. The women of the Auxiliary Board continue a proud tradition of supporting the work of RUSH University Medical Center. RUSH is making concentrated investments in the areas most likely to improve the health of our region, including:

• Care and research in cancer, bone and joint, and the neurosciences;

• Education and career pathways to strengthen its healthcare workforce;

• Health equity initiatives to narrow Chicago’s life expectancy gap; and

• Medical innovation to transform access, outcomes, and patient experience.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Omar Lateef speak at our luncheon this year,” Foster says of RUSH’s new president and CEO who will speak at the Cooks’ Tour luncheon at Skokie Country Club. “He will share how the money we raise makes a difference across all of these pillars. Dr. Lateef is an engaging speaker and will share some inspiring stories of RUSH’s work in acute care.”

Chesney, Lowry, and Foster want guests to make the connection between the Cooks’ Tour and those it benefits. “We’re not just visiting pretty houses,” Chesney reflects. “We’re making a real impact on people’s lives. There is a reason this event is 52 years strong, it’s a special day raising money for a life-changing cause.”

JOHN D. NICHOLS JR.

Friends and associates remember John D. Nichols Jr. as one of Chicago’s brilliant businessmen and civic and philanthropic leaders.

Abusinessman par excellence, committed philanthropist, and thoroughly engaged citizen, John D. Nichols Jr. was a man who not only embraced every opportunity but did his best to create opportunity for others. When he died on June 14 at age 92, Chicago lost an individual who was always there for his city. “For me, John was the exemplar of a business and civic leader,” shares Bobby Mehta, Former CEO and President of TransUnion. “He set the bar for many of us. He was also a compassionate individual who helped people advance in their careers and build a better life. I considered him a mentor and a friend. He will be sorely missed.”

The Art Institute of Chicago, WTTW, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Music Institute of Chicago, Lyric Opera, and the University of Chicago are just a few of the many cultural and civic institutions Nichols and his wife, Alexandra, generously supported. “John’s dedication to the Art Institute, as a trustee and board chair, was remarkable,” says the museum’s President and Eloise W. Martin Director, James Rondeau. “The Nichols Bridgeway linking the Art Institute with Millennium Park is a true manifestation of the connections he built across the city through his civic and business leadership.”

Although his name became synonymous with the best Chicago has to offer, Nichols began life far from the Windy City. He was

SHERIDAN ROAD 112
John and Alexandra Nichols of Winnetka

born in Shanghai, where his father was the Director of the International Red Cross for China, India, and Burma. Nichols grew up in New Jersey and Connecticut and attended Harvard, where he earned both his B.A. and MBA before serving as an officer in the U.S. Army Finance Corps from 1955 to 1958. He began his career as the Director of Financial Controls for International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. He held several positions with Ford Motor Company, including Program Director for the construction and operation of NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, and in 1980 relocated to Chicago to serve first as Executive Vice President and then as President and CEO of Illinois Tool Works (ITW).

Nichols and Alexandra—whom he’d married in 1971—settled into a house in Winnetka, along with their two children. Already a highly-respected businessman, Nichols’s profile grew with invitations to join a number of corporate boards, including those of Hyatt Hotels, Philip Morris International, Rockwell International, Kraft Incorporated, and TransUnion. “John was a teacher to all who knew him,” says Thomas Pritzker, CEO of the Pritzker Organization and executive chairman of the Hyatt Hotels Corporation. “He taught by asking questions. He stood out as an intellect, a businessman, and a friend.”

Nichols, described in a Metals Service Center Institute article as “a modest man who prefers to let his actions do the talking,” led Illinois Tool Works (ITW) until 1996. “As a business leader, what was unique about John was his belief in keeping things simple and pushing decision-making as close to the customer as possible,” remarks Scott Santi, the company’s current Chairman and CEO. “Some 40 years later, simplicity and trust remain firmly embedded as defining elements of what ITW is as a company

and are key drivers of our ability to consistently deliver industry-leading performance.” Santi continues, “As civic leaders, John and Alexandra set an incredible example through their active and transformative involvement with so many vital organizations in Chicago. While they were incredibly generous financially, what has really made an impression on my wife, Nancy, and me and what we try to emulate as best we can is how deeply they engaged in terms of the amount of personal time and effort they devoted to helping the organizations they support.”

In 2002, Nichols became President and CEO of the Pritzker-owned Marmon Group, a globe-spanning entity comprised of hundreds of manufacturing and business services operations. But no matter what the demands of his work, Nichols was indefatigable in his philanthropic efforts. And it wasn’t just the city’s cultural crown jewels that enjoyed his support.

Thomas Vanden Berk, former leader of UCAN—an organization in North Lawndale supporting youth who have suffered trauma and enabling them to become our future leaders—met Nichols 15 years ago. At the time Nichols was president of Homan Square Foundation, which was responsible for nearly 350 affordable housing units in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood, along with a charter school, Power House High, and the Nichols Tower, a hub of community empowerment situated in the old Sears headquarters. “What struck me about John was not just the millions of his own dollars spent on the project and the money he raised—over $40 million—but that he took the time to meet with families and troubled youth. John had an incredible ‘quiet compassion’ for the people of North Lawndale. He listened to them and addressed their needs. He played such a critical role in helping build that community, yet never sought recognition.”

For all his business savvy and charitable prowess, what many will remember of the man are the attributes that defined this husband, father, and friend. Fiercely intelligent with a sharp sense of humor, Nichols was a talented tennis player and a fine skier. An art lover, he was a passionate collector of Han Dynasty tomb figures, Modern and Impressionist art and sculpture, and the prints of Edgar Chahine, an Austrian-born artist of Armenian descent. Nichols was a Renaissance man in the deepest sense, who enhanced the lives of those fortunate enough to know him and whose philanthropic efforts will impact the generations to come.

On Sunday, June 25 and Monday, June 26, the Founders’ Board of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago hosted committed civic leaders, corporate sponsors, and generous golfers for the 63rd Pro Amateur Golf Championship & Dinner on the Bluff. The dinner, chaired by Annie Barlow and Alex Murphy, was held at Shoreacres in Lake Bluff and the golf event was held at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest. Sophie Goodwillie and Maribeth McElveen co-chaired the overall event. Attendees raised more than $1.8 million in support of the Founders’ Board’s $5.5 million commitment to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital and the Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities. UPDATE:

Tetra CO2 Laser Treatment

Tetra’s Cool Peel was honored with the Best CO2 Laser treatment in the 13th Annual New Beauty Awards. Out of 10,000 submissions Tetra CO2 laser was voted the No. 1 CO2 laser treatment. Our experience at Skin Deep Medical Spa corroborates this honor.

The Tetra CO2 Cool Peel laser treatment is cutting-edge technology that uses extremely short pulses of light to enhance the skin’s texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, minimize pores, and tighten skin. It’s a non-invasive aesthetic technology that can dramatically improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and clear up the skin’s complexion.

The Cool Peel leverages the exclusive H-Pulse a high-peak power short pulse that delivers a fully ablative treatment without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Without thermal damage, downtime is drastically minimized. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration to tailor and optimize treatments.

The procedure is quick and virtually painless depending on the area and depth of the treatment. One can often treat large areas of the body quickly and without numbing agents. Post-op there is minimal if any discomfort. The skin feels a little dry and begins peeling or flaking in days leaving you with smooth, radiant skin.

This treatment is presently available at both Highland Park and Glenview locations.

For additional information, visit bodybybloch.com or Dr. Bloch can be reached at his Highland Park office at 847-432-0840.

FROM SOCIALITE TO SAVIOR

Before the United States officially entered World War II, there were Americans who were already fighting against Nazi aggression. These heroic efforts took place not on the frontlines, but in back rooms during hushed conversations. Evanston native Mary Jayne Gold (1909-1997) was one such American. The recent Netflix series Transatlantic brings renewed attention to her efforts, inspired by as her great-nephew, Thor Gold, says, “the proudest thing she ever did in her life.”

For the short time they lived in Evanston, the Golds were among the area’s wealthiest families, members of Exmoor Country Club and Evanston Country Club, hobnobbing with movers and shakers, and frequently mentioned in the local society pages.

Gold attended finishing school in Verona. In 1928, she earned her own pilot’s license and purchased her own airplane. In 1937, she participated in an international flying race. Three years later, she donated her plane to the French government’s war efforts.

What had started as a carefree, jet-setting life, socializing her way through Europe with her privileged friends and her French poodle, Dagobert, ended in Marseilles when Germany invaded France. Anti-Nazi activists, artists, and free-thinkers who had fled to France for safety were suddenly at risk of deportation.

Instead of returning to her sheltered life back in the States, Gold stayed in Marseilles and joined the Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC). As Gold recalled in her memoir, Crossroads Marseilles 1940, “1940-41 proved to be quite a year for a nice girl from Evanston, Illinois.”

From August 1940 until politics and war forced them out, the small, but mighty ERC helped some 2,000 European Jews and intellectuals escape Nazi-occupied France. Led by American journalist Varian Fry, the group also enlisted help from U.S. diplomat

Hiram Bingham, support from Eleanor Roosevelt, and seed funds from Peggy Guggenheim. Gold kept the ERC afloat with her own money, often securing black market visas and passports.

Although the ERC launched with a list of 200 well-known Nazi targets the likes of artist Marc Chagall, writer Hannah Arendt, and sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, it soon became clear that there were many more people who needed their help. Gold’s friend and fellow ERC member Miriam Davenport suggested Gold subsidize an expansion of the relief and rescue efforts. This became known as “the Gold list.” As Gold described during a 1993 interview, it was comprised of “people who might be considered in danger, but not on anyone’s list.”

The members of the ERC were also in danger, and Gold learned how to spot if she were being trailed, how to quickly jump on and off streetcars, and how to use her female charms to help the cause.

In one incident, Fry sent Gold to persuade a French commandant at a concentration camp in the Pyrenees to release four political prisoners. “I wasn’t an expert in the art of love, but four men’s lives were at stake,” Gold recalled during the 1993 interview. She sweet-talked her way into the commandant’s office, and within days, the men were freed.

Gold never married and, after returning to America, she split her time between a Manhattan penthouse and a villa in the south of France, “except in election years,” says her niece, Alison Leslie Gold, author of Anne Frank Remembered. She describes her aunt as “a real bon vivant who had a million boyfriends and a million decorators, but she was never flamboyant.”

One thing Thor Gold says most people don’t know about his great aunt is, “Mary Jayne was deeply caring, not just during extraordinary times, but during everyday life.” A group of historians is currently advocating for Gold and other members of the ERC to receive a Congressional Medal of Honor.
