CONCIERGE MEDICINE
CONCIERGE MEDICINE
FOCUSED CARE
For Dr. Jana Mechurova and the team at Dedication Health, patient care is personal.
WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY RONNIE PRINCE
Dr. Jana Mechurova, with a distinguished medical career spanning multiple continents, brings her expertise and patient-centered approach to Chicago’s North Shore. Joining Dedication Health’s prestigious concierge team, she delivers personalized, high-quality care with immediate access to appointments, thorough health assessments, and tailored treatment plans, ensuring her patients receive comprehensive and attentive medical care.
Born in Slovakia, Dr. Jana Mechurova received her medical degree from Komenskeho University in Bratislava. She began her career in London, working with patients suffering from liver disease and conducting clinical research. After relocating to the U.S. and completing a residency at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago, she became a primary care provider, first at at Mt. Sinai Hospital in the city, where she treated underserved patient populations and refugees, and then at Endeavor Health (formerly NorthShore University HealthSystem). Today, Dr. Mechurova is member of the select professional team at Dedication Health, the concierge medicine practice founded by Dr. John E. Croghan, who is triple-board-certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Rheumatology and Geriatric Medicine.
Concierge medicine— sometimes called boutique medicine — is a membership-based service emphasizing personalized care and immediate accessibility. With offices in Winnetka and Wilmette, Dedication Health offers around-the-clock phone, email, and text access to its physicians, same-day appointments, and timely assistance in scheduling referrals with specialists and coordinating diagnostic testing. New to concierge health care, Dr. Mechurova was drawn to the model after realizing she could provide more dedicated and personalized patient care. “Compared to regular practice, it’s easier for patients to get the care they need when needed, and they don’t have to feel that they are just a number to their doctor,” she says.
Dedication Health is not only grounded in vast clinical experience and expertise, but memberships are limited, ensuring that patients receive the full commitment and attention of the care team. At most primary care offices, a physician may be responsible for as many as 2,000 patients. The doctors at Dedication Health
see no more than 200 patients each. “By having a smaller patient panel, the concierge model allows physicians to spend more time with each patient and develop stronger relationships,” notes Dr. Mechurova. “It also allows the patients to have in-depth conversations about their health concerns during office visits. As a doctor, I get to know my patients well, therefore I can make more personalized recommendations and be more efficient.”
Dedication Health doctors provide expertise in internal medicine, critical care medicine, women’s health, pulmonary disease, rheumatology, and geriatric medicine. The practice’s facilities feature a lab, state-of-the-art imaging services, and a Coumadin® Clinic offering same-day results. But the heart of the practice is a commitment to personalized attention and clear, immediate communication.
Dr. Mechurova—a mother of two and a CrossFit fan who enjoys playing basketball, tennis, and swimming—has a keen interest in preventative medicine, women’s health, nutrition, and fitness. “One of the main health concerns is obesity, which can lead to multiple medical co-morbidities,” observes Dr. Mechurova. “Hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) are the most common health conditions in patients I have treated. These can lead to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and stroke. And in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues, mainly depression and anxiety, are another big concern that is under-diagnosed and need more attention.”
Incisive analysis and effective resolution are critical in health care, where thorough, timely attention can make all the difference, especially when patients face multiple challenges that can adversely affect their daily lives. Like her colleagues at Dedication Health, Dr. Mechurova is committed to establishing meaningful relationships with her patients, providing a highly personal level of service, and focusing on whole-person health care for better whole-health outcomes. “I embrace a holistic approach to treating several medical conditions and offer strategies for motivating and staying on track to help my patients achieve or surpass their goals.”
Dedication Health has offices in Winnetka and Wilmette. For more information, visit dedication-health.com.
DIVORCE – DO YOU NEED A NEW PERSPECTIVE ?
When navigating the nuances of family law, one should consider the advice of a skilled professional.
WORDS
BY MICHONE RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
Big life events often call for advice beyond your own circle of friends and family. Among those are divorce and pregnancy, which surprisingly have a lot of similarities. Friends, family, even strangers want to give you advice. Free, unsolicited advice is often worthless and almost always alarming. Some want to scare you with their overinflated horror story. Others want to impress you with their overinflated success story. It is painful. And while most mean well, you really need a trusted professional—a physician or midwife in one case and a well-vetted family law attorney in the other—to guide you through it.
With the ever-changing landscape of family law, just like prenatal care, you need advice from a professional who knows exactly where you are and can guide you to where you’re going. Since 2017, I have found that most of the people sharing their experience, advice, and criticism weren’t even divorced at a time that the current statute was in place. The fact that your neighbor’s brother’s wife received $10,000 per month of maintenance for life is obviously irrelevant when you finally find out she was divorced in California in 1980. But the story, as it was being told, made you feel inadequate and made you question whether your attorney was protecting your best interest. In fact, the story made you feel as though you should probably go get another attorney because what if your attorney’s strategy, plan, or lack thereof, was fatally detrimental to your divorce, and therefore, your future success.
Each divorce has its own unique circumstances and nuances. While all must follow the same laws, each divorcing couple will have a unique arrangement and it’s your attorney’s responsibility to help guide you to your best outcome. Please do not judge the success or failure of your current divorce attorney, based on a success story of another couple. However, if you have concerns about your attorney’s strategy, focus, plan, or the lack thereof, getting a second opinion—a new perspective—is a good idea. Before you decide to switch attorneys, hire a different family law attorney to review where you are at and determine if your case strategy makes sense and whether you’re on track to meet your goals.
When you need a new perspective, the attorneys at Strategic Divorce can be retained to review your situation, discuss your current strategy, review documents and give you advice—even before you decide whether you want to make a change.

DIVORCE WITHOUT COURT: MEDIATION
Mediation is a process frequently utilized in divorce proceedings to resolve both child-related and financial matters. Mediated divorces are typically less expensive and are resolved quicker than litigated divorces. In mediation, spouses and their attorneys agree upon a mediator who is usually a seasoned divorce attorney or a retired domestic relations judge. In some instances, the court will select the mediator for the parties. The parties can attend mediation with or without their attorneys but, either way, should have their own attorneys to consult with before signing off on any mediated agreements. Mediation is not a binding process; the mediator will not take sides and will not make any final decisions for the family. The mediator will guide discussions, as one of the primary advantages of mediation in divorce cases is its focus on preserving relationships. Traditional litigation tends to fuel adversarial dynamics between spouses, further escalating tensions. Mediation, on the other hand, encourages open communication, empathy, and cooperation. By working together to find mutually agreeable solutions, couples are more likely to maintain amicable post-divorce relationships, which is especially crucial when children are involved. In a mediated divorce, couples have greater control over the outcome compared to a court-imposed decision. This empowerment allows individuals to shape their own agreements tailored to their unique circumstances which can lead to more satisfactory and durable agreements, reducing the likelihood of postdivorce disputes.

Ceramist Zachary Weber lets the clay lead the way.
WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUNVIJAY PAUL
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
One doesn’t immediately think of “risk-taking” when it comes to ceramics. After all, clay most commonly finds its way to us in the form of dinnerware, tile work, and vessels for the garden. But there are those, like the 19th-century potter George Ohr and the contemporary Los Angeles-based sculptor Julia Haft-Candell, who’ve taken their medium in surprising, sometimes confounding directions. Count Chicagoan Zachary Weber among them.
Raised in Lincoln Park, Weber took up pottery in high school and earned his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. However, his creative impulse announced itself early on. “I used to explore my backyard, pulling off vines from the ivy growing on the fence and fastening them into dream catchers for my mother, and I was always involved in collecting rocks and fossils,” he recalls. “I saw no hierarchy in placing semi-precious stones next to spray-painted fragments of concrete.”
ART & ARTIST
The willingness to play with material beyond the bounds of accepted hierarchies, to embrace contrast and contradiction, informs Weber’s work today, which ranges from amphora-shaped forms marked by smiley faces shot from spray paint to Flowers in Repose, in which blossoms droop in cracked pots. Color plays a key and eye-pleasing role in Seedlings, pod-like pieces with dynamically articulated surfaces.
An experienced photographer who has delighted in shooting the banal and unexceptional—snaps of paper on the sidewalk, a shadow on an alleyway wall—Weber approaches his ceramic projects with a similar readiness to welcome the random, to look around and let the ideas arise later. “I’m invested in ‘finding’ or allowing for the conditions for these moments to appear in my
ceramic practice,” says Weber, whose work has been shown at Art Miami with Zolla/Lieberman Gallery and The Art Center Highland Park. “Usually I’ll make a mark, follow up with another mark or a dab of color and see where it goes. If there’s one guiding principle between all my practices, it is to not think, but do, to embrace process at all costs and steer far away from anticipating results. And pay attention.”
The bulk of Weber’s pieces are fashioned using a coil building technique. “This is perhaps one of the oldest methods of building with clay,” explains Weber. “Coils look like long earthworms, but when stacked upon themselves with critical manipulation of each coil, a form emerges. Then the question is to what extent do I eliminate the physical evidence of the coil?” Weber cuts forms out
ART & ARTIST
of the stacked coils and reintegrates them into the mass of clay, then introduces various other materials—a bit of 24-karat gold, a glaze drip—to create layered, multi-dimensional objects. The ceramics world has long contended with theoretical divisions between utility and expression. Can a pitcher be art? Is a pitcher really a pitcher if it can’t hold water? Weber doesn’t trouble himself with such concerns. His thinking is both more fundamental and open-ended. “What is ceramics supposed to look like?” he asks. “Chicago bricks and Ming Dynasty vases look dramatically different, yet it’s still earth. I make that comparison not facetiously, but because I think it’s important for people to understand the sheer diversity of the material. I’m interested in how we place value on the material when it’s crafted into different objects. Perhaps the value lies, partially, in the knowledge of processes. Creating a brick requires less conventional labor than creating a vase. At the same time, we need the brick to enjoy the vase inside our homes.”
Weber’s appreciation for the everyday and the exquisite, for the useful and the experimental, is a constant. He cites his recent work, String Theory, as a “profound breakthrough,” in which “the coils are organized into configurations that both reference themselves and an imaginary form using the negative space of the wall.” At the same time, he’s crafting some sake cups for his father. Form and function. They may not share the same space, but whether united or operating in isolation, they are as much the stuff of Weber’s work as the clay itself.

COMMUNITY-MINDED
Growing up with parents who own an art and antique gallery, New York State native KYLEE RUDD developed a passion for art and design early in life. These interests led her to earn an engineering degree from George Washington University and an MBA in marketing and strategy from Wharton. Rudd then worked on innovation for Campbell Soup Company in Philadelphia. After a brief, two-year stint in Charlotte, North Carolina, she settled in Glencoe in 2020 with her growing family, which now includes her husband, Ben Singer-Scott, and three children—Chase (9), Sadie (7), and Arlo (2). Despite the demands of shuttling between soccer matches, lacrosse and baseball games, and dance recitals, Rudd is deeply involved in her community. As co-chair of Glencoe PTO’s Social Series, she created the Glencoe Kids Carnival modeled after her elementary school’s “Fun Night,” including carnival games, a DJ dance party, and a raffle with kid-friendly prizes. This spring, the fundraising event welcomed more than 600 attendees. As the lead for Moms Demand Action New Trier Township, Rudd is a vocal advocate for community safety. This busy mom and community leader puts down her car keys and clipboard to share how she stays current on the North Shore.
ON HER NIGHTSTAND
“I primarily read on my Kindle, and I recently devoured The Women by Kristin Hannah. This poignant war narrative follows nurses in Vietnam and their challenging return to a divided America, highlighting the underappreciated contributions of women during wartime. It’s a story that will stay with me for a long time. Next up is Come and Get It by Kiley Reid for the week we’ll spend on the Jersey Shore.”
IN HER EARBUDS
“When I’m not talking on my phone, I’m listening to podcasts. First thing each day, I listen to The Mo News Podcast. I love that they simplify the news and give great insight into what it means and why it matters. As an added bonus, the host is a Stevenson grad who went to my alma mater. I also look forward to the Honestly Podcast by Bari Weiss. She is an excellent interviewer who chooses interesting and timely topics. A recent favorite is her interview with Jonathan Haidt the author of The Anxious Generation. I think I sent that episode to half of my contacts!”
ON HER MOBILE
“It’s embarrassing to admit, but I think the most important app on my phone is my calendar. Everyone in my life has their own calendar color—each of my three kids, my husband, my parents, and oh, I’ve got one too! I even keep my to-do lists in my calendar in hopes that my tasks will only take the amount of time I allot. I probably spend more time on Instagram than I care to admit but I love to follow design accounts, auction houses, and keep up with friends near and far.”

MUSICAL PREVIEW
AN EVENING TO REMEMBER
The Ravinia Women’s Board Gala on August 4 pays tribute to the legacy of Henry Mancini, featuring a performance by Mancini’s daughter, Monica, and Reach Teach Play Jazz Scholars.
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RAVINIA FESTIVAL
Step into a bygone era and celebrate an iconic chapter of American music on August 4 as the Ravinia Women’s Board hosts its annual summer Gala, a flagship fundraiser to support Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play and other music education programs.
“What’s truly unique about this year’s Gala is our immersive mid-century modern theme, paired with a tribute to Henry Mancini’s legendary music,” explains Jen Luby, who is co-chairing the gala benefit with Toria Stender and Michele Ihlanfeldt, Women’s Board Chairman. “We’ve meticulously crafted an evening that not only celebrates his timeless compositions but also transports our guests back to an age of unparalleled elegance and innovation. Expect moments of surprise and delight throughout the night, as we blend music, design, and nostalgia in ways that promise to make this gala an unforgettable experience.”
Cocktails begin on the North Lawn at 4:30 p.m., followed by a concert in the Pavilion at 6 p.m. featuring Broadway stars Jessie Mueller (original Jenna in Waitress, Tony winner in the title role of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical); Norm Lewis (first African American in the title role of Phantom of the Opera, appearing as Javert in Les Misérables); and Karen Mason (Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, original Tanya in Mamma Mia!) alongside the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Dinner will be served under a stylish tent on the North Lawn, with chic décor by Maison du Prince and exquisite cuisine from Jewell Events Catering. Tickets are $850 per person.
This enchanting evening honors Mancini during what would have been his 100th birthday year, featuring a special guest performance by his daughter, Monica Mancini, as well as the Reach Teach Play Jazz Scholars.
“The focus on Henry Mancini’s legacy at this year’s Gala at Ravinia resonates deeply with the Ravinia Women’s Board’s mission, celebrating his profound impact on music. Renowned for his prolific contributions to film and television music, Mancini epitomizes artistic excellence and innovation—values that align closely with Ravinia’s commitment to presenting outstanding musical performances and fostering cultural enrichment,” says Ihlanfeldt. “By honoring Mancini’s legacy, the Women’s Board not only celebrates his monumental impact on music but also underscores Ravinia’s dedication to showcasing diverse musical talents and educating future generations through programs like Reach Teach Play.”
Highlighting Reach Teach Play musicians on the Pavilion stage is a way for the Women’s Board to shine a spotlight on this exceptional program and celebrate the accomplishments of its students. It is also a celebration of a mission that began in 1965 when the Women’s Board launched the Opportunity Lawn Pass Program, connecting young music lovers across the Chicago area to concerts at Ravinia.
“Reach Teach Play music education programs are crucial as they provide access to music education, enriching the lives of over 20,000 students in Cook and Lake counties,” says Stender. “These programs enhance cognitive skills, creativity, and emotional expression—offering students a sense of accomplishment and joy. By fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts and ensuring inclusivity regardless of socioeconomic background, we help build a more vibrant, empathetic, and connected community.”
Since its founding in 1962, the Women’s Board has been dedicated to supporting Ravinia’s vision of inspiring the world through shared, live-music moments. Today, the Women’s Board is comprised of 125 board members and is the single biggest contributor to the nonprofit festival to date.
As Stender, Luby, and Ihlanfeldt explain, the annual Woman’s Board Gala has a long and storied history. The first one was held in 1967—a black-tie and ball-gown affair launched as a “thankyou event” to mark the opening of the season’s Chicago Symphony Orchestra residency. Today, the evening is a staple of the social season, raising critical funds to support ongoing music education programs to which so many are committed.
“What was once a grand social event to recognize the festival’s many committed donors has become a mainstay of Ravinia’s education programs’ budget,” adds Ihlanfeldt. “The most rewarding aspect of being part of the Ravinia Women’s Board is the opportunity to sustain the magic of live music and its educational outreach.”

TRAVEL & CUISINE
THE GRAPE ESCAPE
GATEWAY TO WINE COUNTRY
The Meritage Resort & Spa provides a luxurious vantage point for oenophiles and novice wine lovers alike to explore California’s Napa Valley.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN
In the heart of California’s famed wine country lies Napa Valley, a destination promising an unparalleled experience for both lovers of wines and lovers of the finer things. The Meritage Resort & Spa is the ideal beginning to a Napa Valley vacation, where visitors can partake in wine tastings, exhilarating outdoor activities, fine dining, and serene spas.
This was my first visit to Napa Valley and its appeal revealed itself on the hour’s drive from the San Francisco airport. We passed rolling hills, miles of vineyards, blue skies, and darling sheep dotting the landscape (vineyards use the animals to naturally manage cover crops as the woolly fellows act as environmentally friendly “lawnmowers”).
FIRST CLASS
Comprised of five charming yet distinct towns surrounded by pristine vineyards, Napa defines the word “picturesque.” Nestled between the Vaca Mountains on the east and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west, the valley enjoys a climate perfect for grape growing. The Vacas help protect the vineyards from the intense heat of the Central Valley, and the Mayacamas help block cooler coastal influences from the Pacific Ocean. The prevalent “sea fog” on the valley’s west side encourages a lush landscape (including a bounty of Redwoods). This rare Mediterranean climate of dry, warm days, mild temperatures, and cooler evenings exists in just two percent of the world and is the ideal climate to cultivate the best grapes. You’ll discover that cabernet is King of the Valley and chardonnay is Queen, but you’ll also find pinots, petite sirahs, merlots, zinfandels, and many other grape varieties.
STAY
The Meritage Resort & Spa is located at the gateway to the valley providing easy access to all vineyards—the farthest is within a 30-minute drive. Situated on more than 36 sprawling acres with 9 acres of active vineyards, The Meritage is the largest resort in Napa boasting 467 spacious guest rooms and offers a little something for everyone. A recent $25 million renovation has everything sparkling with thoughtfully designed rooms boasting gorgeous décor with a modern vineyard farmhouse vibe. The complimentary welcome bottle of wine in each room pairs perfectly with your hillside views!
Guests have access to on-site tasting rooms, elevated dining options, a six-lane bowling alley (one of only two in Napa), a locally sourced artisanal market, a state-of-the-art cooking classroom, pools, and Spa Terra, which was recently named the No. 1 Spa in Napa. With so much offered on property, you may never want to leave. However, if you choose to head off campus, there is a complimentary shuttle to downtown Napa.
DINE
On property, Olive & Hay delivers both indoor and alfresco dining experiences, with chef-prepared farm-to-table Italian cuisine and, not surprisingly, an award-winning wine list. Be sure to try the Big Italian Salad (I loved it so much I ordered it two nights in a row), the Polenta Crusted Salmon, and the Tiramisu. To kickstart your mornings, Olive & Hay offers hearty breakfasts featuring delights like the Protein Bowl and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. If you are in the mood for lighter fare, visit Blend and be sure to try the Superfood Smoothies—a nutrient-rich blend of fruits, veggies, and plant-based protein.
If a sporty evening is desired, try Crush Lounge for bowling, craft cocktails, boozy milkshakes, and elevated bar food. I adored the Envied Elegance cocktail, a blend of mezcal, blanco tequila, Aperol, lime, agave, and pineapple. The Giant Pretzel, Mushroom Tacos, and Crush Signature Wings were team favorites from the appetizer menu.
FIRST CLASS
Looking for an afternoon of dining in the vines? Be sure to visit Fivetown Grocery to arrange a basket full of goodies for a picnic in the vineyards. Post-picnic, visit the famous “Grape Crusher” statue—a symbol of Napa—and the “Sunny Side Up” chicken coop, a henhouse for colorful chickens who have an elaborate place to sleep and play (think chicken swings) while enjoying expansive vineyard views.
Craving steak? The brand-new Ember Steak is a must! We enjoyed a chef’s tasting of appetizers including the divine steak tartare. Ember is a premier dining destination offering a rustic and warm ambiance with an outdoor patio overlooking The Village Lawn—16,000-square-feet of green grass.
ACTIVITIES
My favorite off-campus activity was a visit to Yountville, located in the heart of the valley and the site of Napa’s first grapevines planted by the town’s namesake George C. Yount.
We visited Napa Valley Bike Tours to pick up our electric bikes and meet our knowledgeable guide. Pedaling through the idyllic town, we passed the world-famous French Laundry restaurant as we headed out to Yount Mill Road cycling past Walt Disney and Robert Mondavi’s houses. Our guide regaled us with tales of Yountville’s history and recounted how the 1973 Judgement of Paris competition win for Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and Stag’s Leap S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon catapulted Napa onto the international wine stage. We cycled back to town and onto the Napa Valley Vine Trail, which meanders through Napa’s vineyards. Upon completion, the trail will extend 47 miles.
Wine tasting is a Napa standard. At The Meritage Village, four tasting rooms highlight Napa Valley’s finest boutique wineries. I loved Trinitas Cellars for its chardonnays and cabernets crafted in the iconic California style. Gen 7 Wines offers wines from the family-owned winery that has been perfecting winemaking for almost two centuries. This expertise is evident in each sip. Anarchist Wine Co. features a blend of uncommon varietals—be sure to taste the Outré Blend. Sora Napa, the newest of The Village’s tasting venues, is dedicated to the art of bubbles serving artisanal sparkling wines and champagnes. Sora is perfect for a girls’ get-together—my next visit will be with a gaggle of girlfriends toasting each other in Sora’s glamorous setting.
For music lovers visiting in the summer or fall, The Meritage’s Blue Note Summer Series offers a season of unparalleled live music. These electrifying performances are hosted under the stars on the sprawling Village Lawn. You can even book a room overlooking the lawn for a “front row” seat. This year’s talent varied from Dwight Yoakam to the Gypsy Kings and so much in between.
If you are planning a holiday visit, Merry Meritage transforms the Village Lawn into a wine country winter wonderland featuring an ice-skating rink with darling little “igloos” and fire pits dotting the rink’s edge.
SPA
Located beneath the resort vineyards in the 22,000-square-foot Napa Estate Cave, Spa Terra offers a truly unique spa experience. Just beyond large glass doors adorned with grapevine ironwork, you’ll find a long barrel-vaulted hallway leading to a relaxation room, treatment rooms, and dressing rooms. The latter houses a steam shower and a gorgeous spa pool. Wandering under the vineyards toward the changing rooms was a meditative experience—the ideal precursor to the amazing massage that followed. Be sure to try the cave-inspired hot stone massage or a wine-infused spa treatment—both are Terra-ific. In addition to treatments, the spa offers a wide range of wellness classes including morning flow yoga, vineyard yoga hikes, barre, guided meditation, and the very popular healing sound baths.
Visit America’s wine capital and savor a glass to celebrate the rich heritage of this extraordinary land while ensconced in the luxury of The Meritage Resort & Spa.

ZESTY SUMMER SUCCOTASH
STYLING, AND PHOTOGRAPHY
RECIPE
INGREDIENTS (4 to 6 servings)
For the salad:
• 4 or 5 ears sweet corn, husks intact (cut from the cobs, you’ll need 2 1/2 cups of kernels)
• 1 jicama, peeled and cut into small cubes
• Fresh garden tomatoes, washed and cubed to make 2 cups
• 2 cups frozen edamame beans, thawed
• Handful of fresh basil leaves, chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
For the zesty lime dressing:
• Juice from 2 fresh limes, to make 3 tablespoons
• 1 teaspoon good quality Dijon mustard
• 1 teaspoon coconut palm sugar
Nothing says “summer” like sweet corn and tomatoes. This salad combines the two in a zesty lime dressing and adds jicama for a cool crunch and edamame for protein. With a nod to historical precedents, we’ve dubbed it “succotash” from sahquttahhash, the Native American Narragansett word for “broken corn kernels.” While the early versions of succotash were hot stews, this recipe only requires cooking the corn. After first soaking the unhusked corn in water for several hours, we grill ours until the husks are blackened. If you’re in a hurry, you can blanch the corn in boiling water for a few minutes instead. Just be sure not to overcook it.
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
• 1/4 cup olive oil
METHOD
Soak unhusked corn for several hours and then grill the corn until the husks are blackened and corn is cooked tender. Cool. Slice corn from cobs into a large bowl. Add cubed jicama, tomatoes, and edamame. Toss all together with basil. Season with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, whisk lime juice with mustard, sugar, salt, and pepper. Whisk in olive oil until emulsified. Pour over salad, mix well, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste, and serve.

BUCKING THE TRENDS
A Winnetka project by designer Jill Goetz is the epitome of timeless design.
WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY
HOME TOUR
Getting a home to look “just so” is no easy achievement. Going big and bold is a snap in comparison. Or being on trend? No problem. But hitting that sweet spot, where comfort and authenticity converge, where interiors make sense but are not a spectacle, takes a special eye, one that sees the forest and the trees.
Designer Jill Goetz strives to create a feeling of continuity throughout a home. “I like to make sure that one room proceeds naturally to the next,” she says. “It’s not a matter of matching, but of flow.” When detailing a space, the former North Shore resident who is now based in Delray Beach, Florida, aims for a balanced, layered aspect; a look that speaks to beauty while generating an unmistakable sense of warmth and welcome. “I believe in keeping things timeless,” Goetz explains, “not of the moment.”
When a young couple approached Goetz to help them with their new Winnetka home, they weren’t sure what they wanted. But they knew what they didn’t want—anything they’d seen anywhere else. “The minute I proposed something,” says Goetz “they’d Google it. So, it took us a year and a half to complete the project. But in the end, we found her style. Which is what you always want for a client.”
From the start, Goetz sensed the project would take on a more traditional look. Which isn’t to suggest that Goetz did a deep dive into chintz. “Traditional will get dated if you don’t bring something new into it,” she observes. “To keep it fresh you must add a contemporary element. To make it relevant.” One way she did this was in her choice of lighting, such as the bubble-like Julie Neill
HOME TOUR
“Talia” chandelier, in the dining room, which offers a distinctive contrast to not only the Restoration Hardware table and antique chairs but also the classic millwork that envelopes the room.
Wallpaper played a key role in giving these interiors an added depth. “My client’s initial preference was for over-scaled floral patterns, but I told her she would get tired of that,” shares Goetz. “And no one wants to change their wallpaper every few years. It’s just too expensive.” Goetz specified a white grasscloth for the dining room walls with a Lee Jofa damask print on the ceiling. In the kitchen, she applied a blue paper to brighten the space. “It’s vinyl,” she notes. “They have a 2-year-old and a dog. So, function has to come first, everything has to be kid and pet-friendly.” While the space can take a beating, it doesn’t skimp on style. Set with a pedestal table, spindle-back chairs in a black finish, and a custom bench in channel-tufted faux wool, the breakfast area is relaxed yet elegant. The windows are dressed in Namay Samay drapery fabric from John Rosselli & Associates, with a complementary trim from Samuel & Sons.
When making remodeling choices, Goetz strove to balance style with budget. “We began with the family room, which presented a real challenge,” says Goetz. “There was a fireplace set on an angle with
a brick hearth and brick running up the wall to the ceiling. Not very good looking.” Rather than remove it entirely, which would have been costly, Goetz painted the hearth, paneled over the wall, and designed a handsome surround with a French accent.
The home now exudes a reassuring, eminently comfortable solidity, a completeness spun from a determination that its rooms will enjoy a long shelf life. It is, truly, a home for today and many tomorrows.

TEEING UP THE LONG GAME
After a distinguished career of her own in the investment world, Ariana Bhatia teams up with her father as a Private Wealth Advisor with The Bhatia Group at Merrill Private Wealth Management.
WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY KATRINA WITTKAMP

THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
hen Ariana Bhatia was a student at Lake Forest Academy, there wasn’t a girls’ golf team like there is today. This was a shame because Bhatia was a very good golfer. So, she made a deal with the coach of the boys’ golf team that if she played from the men’s tees and participated in all of the tournaments, she could join their team. And that’s exactly what she did. Bhatia even went on to be the first and only female captain.
This anecdote from Bhatia’s youth was a foreshadowing of the deals she would make in her future, namely as a Private Wealth Advisor with The Bhatia Group at Merrill Private Wealth Management, working alongside her father in the practice he founded more than 40 years ago.
“Anyone who has ever met my dad knows how much he loves what he does,” Bhatia says of her father, Raj. “He’s so passionate about investing and cares so deeply about his clients and that inspired me to want to follow in his footsteps. Very few people have that kind of love for what they do.”
After graduating with honors from Stanford University, Bhatia earned her MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business where she was a Wallman Scholar. Bhatia has spent her career as a private equity, private credit, and real estate investor. She began at Goldman Sachs where she was a member of the Alternative Investments and Manager Selection team, interviewing and selecting asset managers for institutional and private wealth portfolios. Subsequently, she was a member of Goldman’s Special Situations Group, where she focused on asset-backed private equity and private credit investments. Most recently, Bhatia was a Vice President at The Vistria Group, executing private equity deals within the financial services space.
“When I decided to work with my father, I thought about my career in a broader sense,” Bhatia says. “While I loved executing transactions—it’s very exciting—ultimately, I wanted to build long-term relationships. I’ve watched my father build relationships for decades and it is extraordinarily meaningful. One of his clients, who had been a client for almost 40 years, recently passed away at 92 years old. That was really like losing a member of the family. My father treasures these relationships. I look forward to doing the same.”
Prior to joining her father’s group, it was critical to Bhatia that she establish herself in the investment world. “It was important for me to build my own reputation and a solid investment foundation,” she says. “I needed to be sure I was bringing real value to
the team. I had reached that point in my career where I felt I had proven this.”
The Bhatia Group is based in Chicago and Naples. Bhatia and the team help high-net-worth clients acquire, grow, and preserve assets, structure wealth for future generations, and assist clients in determining and realizing the purpose behind their wealth. She works with wealth creators from various backgrounds including corporate executives, private investments professionals, company founders, individuals and families, and family offices and foundations.
“We pride ourselves on being a team structured to serve three generations,” Bhatia adds. “We are holding true to that promise and continue to grow in that promise. We currently oversee approximately $2.5 billion in assets for more than 100 families. Our 12-person team offers high-touch, white-glove service. And being there for that next generation of our clients is very important to me.”
In addition to crediting her father as a mentor in her life, Bhatia also gives a nod to the nurturing faculty and staff she was surrounded by in her years at Lake Forest Country Day School and Lake Forest Academy. “It says so much about a school that allows students to have the opportunity to go after what they reach for,” she says, continuing today as an Alumni Advisory Board member of Lake Forest Academy. “The teachers at both schools were absolutely phenomenal—and so supportive of anything I was interested in.”
One such interest is Bhatia’s work with the American India Foundation, which helps underprivileged women and children in India.
“I started the first junior chapter of the American India Foundation in the country when I was in seventh grade at Lake Forest Country Day,” Bhatia remembers. “I worked on that until I left for college. Then, when I was working in New York, I joined the Young Professionals Board. And recently I was appointed to the organization’s Global Board. My charitable giving journey began in grade school with the encouragement to go after what I was passionate about.”
When Bhatia is asked if there is anything in her career she would do differently, she answers thoughtfully. “Honestly, no, I wouldn’t change anything. It takes a long time to figure out what you want to do, and you’re very lucky when you find it,” she says. “I’m fortunate to be in a position where all my prior experiences are directly additive to the work I do every day. Because of my past direct investing experience, I feel confident when I’m making a recommendation to a client. I’m able to understand the strategies inside and out. That’s a really great vantage point to come from.”

REFLECTED BEAUTY
Automobili Pininfarina Chief Design Officer Dave Amantea describes co-creating the Reversario and Anniversario, mirror-image hypercars, with a local collector.
WORDS BY JOE ROSENTHAL
There is a thread that connects the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider, Alfa Romeo Duetto, Lancia Flavia, Ferrari 250GT, Ferrari 275 GTB, Ferrari 308, Ferrari Dino, Ferrari Testarossa, and Cisitalia 202 GT. Considered by many to be the most beautiful cars ever made, they (and countless others) all sprang from the pens of the legendary Italian design house Pininfarina. A pair of electric hypercars dubbed “the Twins” and named Anniversario and Reversario—the result of a collaboration between a local collector and Automobili Pininfarina Chief Designer, Dave Amantea—are destined to find a place on this vaunted list.
Amantea vividly recalls his first encounter with Pininfarina. When he was 8, Amantea’s father took him to a car show in Turin, Italy where he got to sit in a Ferrari Testarossa and turn over the engine.
“When I got out, I noticed on the body there was a badge that read Pininfarina,” Amantea recalls. “I asked my father what that meant, and he said ‘Well, it’s Ferrari, but it’s designed by Pininfarina.’ From that moment, I was addicted to anything that Pininfarina was doing and instantly knew I wanted to be a car designer.”
Now, through a 20-year career evolution that Amantea attributes to hard work and a degree of luck, he leads the design team at Automobili Pininfarina. His leadership came at a unique point in the company’s history as it had begun selling directly to the consumer and for the first time placed its emblem on the front of the car.
In 2018, Automobili Pininfarina was established to realize founder Battista “Pinin” Farina’s dream of creating a range of solely-badged Pininfarina cars, starting with Battista hyper GT. The Battista embodied the great tradition of Pininfarina design but also embraced the future. In a bold move amid a history of legendary automobiles with growling V engines, the car would be electric. It would also be the fastest Italian road car ever made, with 1,900bhp and a zero-to-sixty time of under two seconds. In 2021, the car won the coveted Design Award at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como and stole the hearts of automotive design aficionados worldwide. It was the first time an EV had achieved such a feat.
Buying a car from Automobili Pininfarina is, not surprisingly, a unique experience. Purchasers can become directly involved in the design process. “We treat our customers as friends,” says Amantea. “We invite them to eat a lot of food and drink a lot of wine. We talk about what they like. We become friends. And by becoming friends, it’s an experience and we create emotion.”
In 2023, a local collector reached out to Pininfarina Chicago to order the last Anniversario edition Battista. The buyer’s fascination with the concept of yin and yang provided the spark that led to the creation of the Reversario—and the purchase of a second car to make the pair.
“By simply inverting the color of the Anniversario edition, we found out that the cars looked different—the stance was different, the cabin looked much more forward because the white doesn’t show you the body side. It looks like a shark that is basically peering in the water.”
“In the meantime,” Amantea continues, growing more and more animated. “The white, when you see from the side and the back, is so peaceful.” It was all the proof of concept they needed, and the design process moved into overdrive as they refined all the details.
Amantea describes the harmony in the mirror image designs as spellbinding. “It’s arrogant, but it’s also harmonious,” he says. “We say that this is the irreverent luxury that Automobili Pininfarina represents. It’s a little bit Piedmontese: It’s not opulent, it’s elegance that’s shown off in a fresh and different way.”
The Reversario is the “unicorn” in the Battista collection, according to Amantea. “How many twins [like this] exist? One. Who created the story? It’s not the company. It’s the company together with the customer that created the story.”
It’s rare to find examples of design companies that have sparked passion for nearly a century. When asked what makes Pininfarina so successful through generations, Amantea becomes emotional.
“The application of Italian design is not the perfect execution of a millimeter gap. It’s not that. It’s exactly like a human being, who has defects and these defects are what make you fall in love. They are the things that make us different. It’s the beauty of imperfection,” he observes.
As Amantea is keen to note, Automobili Pininfarina is just getting started. There is the B95 hyper Barchetta, the Battista and B95 Dark Knight and Gotham cars inspired by the Wayne Enterprise partnership, the PURA Vision luxury utility concept vehicle, and more announcements to come at Monterey Car Week this month. Being designers, the team is constantly cooking up new concepts.
“Pininfarina has a big bag full of ingredients, and we just open it and pick them. The ingredients are the heritage, and our goal is to cook something differently.”

ASK THE QUESTION, TAKE THE CHANCE
Andee Harris, CEO of Challenger, creates opportunities by asking “Why not?”

Some of us take time to find our footing as we venture into the working world. Some hit the ground running. Andee Harris is firmly among the latter. The CEO of Challenger, which empowers sellers and drives sales growth around the globe through sales training, technology, and consulting, hasn’t missed a beat since earning her B.A. in organizational studies and human resource management from the University of Michigan. “I started out as a psychology major and realized that this didn’t speak to what I wanted to study, so I created my own major. I was never a kid who colored inside the lines, and what helped me bring my career into focus was to think of it not as a ladder but as a jungle gym. There are a lot of paths to play on.”
Harris began her career at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) where she traveled constantly, working 70 to 80 hours a week. She learned a lot, but within a few years was ready for something different. “My experience at Andersen helped me realize that I was going to be happiest if I pursued roles that allowed me to use my rebellious, curious nature to solve problems and make businesses better,” she explains. “I saw I had a comfort with risk, so I began taking strategic risks for the right opportunity, particularly for businesses at an inflection point.”
At 26, Harris co-founded the software services firm Emerging Solutions, which was later acquired by Emtec Inc. for $30 million. She went on to serve as CEO of HighGround, a software company, which she successfully sold to Vista Equity Partners in 2018. Harris was named as one of the city’s most successful technology entrepreneurs by Crain’s Chicago Business and nominated by Illinois Technology Association as a Prominent Woman in Tech in 2015, 2016, and 2017. After HighGround, she founded the private equity firm Franklin Heritage. “Launching your own business versus taking over an existing company is like building from scratch rather than remodeling a house,” Harris relates. “If you nail the mission, the vision, and the product market fit at the beginning, you nail your company’s success and culture. But there’s a lot of joy in guiding an existing business through cultural change, just like there is when you’re remodeling and you figure out how to make that one weird load-bearing beam work in your new layout.”
At Challenger, Harris, who lives in Lincoln Square with her husband, Jonathan Harris (director of the Team to End AIDS) and their two college-age children, works to increase the firm’s market share and revenue, while assuring that its clients receive

the most sophisticated, multi-pronged guidance to realize their own success. “Companies come to us when they need to help sellers, marketers, and any other revenue pros learn how to challenge customers to improve and grow, align their entire go-to-market team, and create structure and reinforcement so that this approach to sales is really embedded in their day-to-day work. Challenger isn’t a one-and-done training program. It’s an encompassing, strategic approach to growing business and deepening the connection between customers and sellers as trusted advisors.”
Harris’ natural tendency to ask “why not?” and her extensive experience have allowed her to assess business realities from many angles and help clients recalibrate their perceptions. “Businesses are so focused on return on investment or ROI, and I don’t want to diminish the importance of ROI, but they really need to shift their focus to the cost of inaction or COI. Research found that as much as 80 percent of deals end in no decision, meaning people choose to do nothing rather than make a change. So, as sellers, it’s important to emphasize not what you’ll gain by investing in a new solution or approach, but what you’ll lose by not acting. Because there are often bigger costs to staying the same than committing to change.”
While her business savvy has certainly been shaped by her years at the top, like many leaders, Harris has taken to heart life’s early lessons. “When I played field hockey,” she recalls, “one of my coaches offered me advice that guides me to this day: ‘Don’t get furious, get curious. When you see something you don’t like, ask questions. Learn about your options, and what works and what doesn’t. Dig into the problem and find a new path that solves the problems you see.’ I took that mentality into my first business, and I maintain it even now.”

MEANINGFUL RETURNS
Desiree Vargas Wrigley and Amy Rosenow, founders of The Josephine Collective, help women and people of color invest in early-stage startups in Chicago and across the country.
WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY RUNVIJAY PAUL STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
Amy Rosenow was giving a talk on International Women’s Day and opened with a question for her mostly female audience.
“Who here wants to be wealthy?” Rosenow, an entrepreneur, financial industry veteran, hedge fund and angel investor, working mom, and philanthropist asked. “I heard crickets. Nothing. Nada. So, I decided to share my personal definition of wealth. To me, being wealthy is being able to buy everything my family needs, a lot of what we want, and still be able to save for the future, and help other people. I then asked the group to consider that when we have more money, we have more power and more flexibility. With that said, I re-asked the question ‘Who here wants to be wealthy?’ and everyone’s hands went up in the air.”
But leaving the lecture that day, Rosenow had a lingering feeling that if she had asked the same question about wealth in a room filled with men, the response would have been very different.
“I’m passionate about helping women step into their financial knowledge and their financial power because we need to do that,” says Rosenow, founder of Fearless Financial Planning, President of RUOK Management investment partnership, and the Kaplan Rosenow Family Foundation. “I thought I was asking a rhetorical question. Now, over time, I’ve learned that there’s this feeling of discomfort about women asking for money.”
Rosenow shared this concern with her colleague from the investment and entrepreneurial sphere, Desiree Vargas Wrigley, a two-time Latina founder, the executive director of TechRise, an offshoot of P33, an innovation nonprofit started by Penny Pritzker for which Wrigley is Chief Information Officer. Wrigley had been thinking about women and money as well, and she shared with Rosenow an idea for an angel investing group focused on bringing women into the asset class. Wrigley is committed to investing early in big ideas, especially in consumer arenas. She serves on the Chicago Steering Committee for All Raise and is on advisory boards for GET Cities, mHUB, and Chicago:Blend.
Together, the women founded The Josephine Collective. “One of the most powerful things about women is their ability to see problems and build solutions to solve them,” Wrigley says. “And that’s really what we’ve done with The Josephine Collective. We could all be individually investing, but by coming together in this collaborative effort we’re able to have a much larger impact.”
The Josephine Collective is a women-led group of angel investors co-investing small amounts (as little as $1,000 per angel per deal) in early-stage startups in Chicago and across the United States. The Collective helps make angel investing accessible for all, but especially women and people of color. They do this by using a unique structure that allows the group to invest in high-potential startups with the lowest possible fee structure.
“People can dip their toes into the water of angel investing with The Josephine Collective,” explains Wrigley. “Traditionally with angel investing, you would be asked to write at least one check for $25,000 or $50,000. A big financial commitment like this can scare people away. And if you invest in something that doesn’t work out, you’re even more inclined to feel this way. But with the Collective, we present deals each month and investors can develop their own pattern for investing and what they’re interested in funding. It’s a nice way of placing a lot of bets without exposing yourself to too much risk.”
The Josephine Collective looks at deals on a rolling basis, and founders can be considered at any time. In part due to Wrigley’s 15 years of building and mentoring startups, The Josephine Collective looks at hundreds of businesses and brings the top three

or four opportunities to its angels each month. Startups meet with the Collective’s managers via Zoom and the conversation is recorded to share with the Collective to help aid in the decision to invest or not. The goal is to have the entire process take no more than three weeks from presentation to payment.
“We’re not making investment decisions on behalf of our members,” Rosenow says. “We do screening and quality control at the top of the funnel but we present the deals to our members. If we get enough members interested in a specific deal, then we move forward and fund. In an advisory model, we’d be registered investment advisors and we’d make decisions on behalf of our clients. That is not what is happening here. This is a collaborative effort with our members. There’s no judgment. No stupid questions. That sets us apart and makes it a very enjoyable experience for our members.”
It’s an effort that the namesake of The Josephine Collective would be proud of.
“We named our angel group after the unsung Chicago hero, Josephine Garis Cochrane,” Wrigley says. “She invented the first commercial dishwasher in 1886 that was originally installed in hotels and hospitals, saving hours of back-breaking work for women around the world. Her company eventually became KitchenAid. The fact that she built this company, and no one ever talks about her, the wealth it created for her family, or the impact that it had on women around the world—we wanted to elevate her story by naming our collective after her. Josephine was famous for saying, ‘If someone won’t build it, I will.’ We feel the same way.”
People do need to be accredited investors to be a part of The Josephine Collective. A person who has $200,000 of income on their own, $300,000 with their spouse or family, or at least $1 million in net worth outside of their home is considered an accredited investor. Legally this is required as accredited investors can afford to evaluate and manage the risk involved with angel investing.
To date, The Josephine Collective is the most active angel fund in Chicago, having distributed 25 checks since its founding in 2022. Both Rosenow and Wrigley agree that support from the North Shore and Chicago is critical to the future growth of The Josephine Collective.
Wrigley, who will be leaving her current post at TechRise at the end of the year to head Velocity Catalyst, a new $50 million fund that will transform Chicago’s venture economy, explains “We hope women will consider venture as part of their philanthropic or impact strategy that will ultimately produce great returns for them and their families.”

For Steven Esposito, personal attention for his wealth management clients is paramount. “Each portfolio is individually managed,” explains Esposito, President and Managing Director of Yellowstone Wealth Management in Lake Forest. “No two clients are alike so why should their portfolios be identical?” As early as his sophomore year of high school, Esposito was following the financial markets and thinking about what it would be like to help people manage their money. “I earned a B.A. in finance in 1983 and have been in wealth management ever since,” he says, adding that after more than 40 years of hard work and commitment, his Yellowstone Wealth Management firm has built an elite clientele of loyal long-term clients. He believes that success comes not by chasing hot stocks but by managing risk and maintaining confidence in client portfolios. He works closely with an experienced team that includes Kate Baness, Director of Client Experience; Stephanie Esposito, Chief Operating Officer, Managing Partner; Melissa Esposito, Client Associate; and Samantha Finckle, Client Associate. Yellowstone’s business model utilizes back-office support from Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network while maintaining the independence to serve clients at a highly individualized level and address each client’s unique needs. When I became an advisor, my focus shifted to helping people in their personal lives,” explains Barry, who works with the CEO and President at Aaron Wealth Advisors to manage daily operations, strategic planning, talent management, and cultural initiatives.
“Now, as a senior leader of the firm, my goal is growing, developing, and managing our team as we strive toward client and firm success. My career has been built upon my ability to connect with others, build relationships, and find ways for everyone to succeed.” Her path to the investment world came indirectly from working in the family restaurant business. “Being in a small business teaches you many lessons—hard work, client service, and financial responsibility—but it also taught me I didn’t want to work in a restaurant,” she says. “I worked hard to get myself to Wall Street so I could find more opportunity and realize my passion and capabilities. I had an interest in the stock market growing up but then fell in love with economics my freshman year at University of Michigan. I think my choice of career was, and is, a great intersection of business and relationships.” Today Barry is raising her three children on the North Shore with the help of a supportive spouse. “I have so much respect for single parents,” she says, adding that her philanthropic passion is to help struggling, working mothers through Fellowship Housing and Habitat for Humanity. “The impact on my work has been putting my own challenges in perspective—sharing my passion with clients and prospects to ignite discussion and motivate others to find their passion.”

FRANK SCHROEDER
FOUNDER & CEO
CAMPUS 2 CAREER TRANSITION SERVICES
It was at the height of the 2009 financial crisis that Frank Schroeder founded Campus 2 Career Transition Services (“C2C”) to help parents protect their most precious investment—their children. “I recognized the need for this high value, high touch service,” explains Schroeder, who serves as CEO of what has blossomed into a successful enterprise. “The company was created to provide young college graduates with the coaching and hands-on assistance they need to define their career objective and land a meaningful job or internship in the field of their choice. Our success rate is 98 percent.” Schroeder brings a diverse background to the company, including more than 40 years of sales, marketing, corporate development, and general management for leading U.S. organizations. “This track record allows me to assist young adults in finding the right first job in the field of their choice,” he says, adding that his experience and dedication to this demographic sets his business apart from the competition. “Our process is hands on starting with assessments to on-boarding advice and salary negotiations following an offer.” Each client has a primary coach who is the day-to-day contact. “Just like financial advisors, our coaches build strong bonds of trust,” says Schroeder. “Other members of the C2C team our clients meet include specialized coaches in strategic résumé development and interviewing skills. MICHONE J. RIEWER
MANAGING PARTNER
STRATEGIC DIVORCE
For more than 25 years, Michone J. Riewer has been helping clients. She helps clients navigate some of the most difficult times in their lives at her Lake Bluff-based law firm, Strategic Divorce. “I care about each of my clients and my success is linked to their success,” she says. “Helping them get to the next phase of their life with precision and integrity is important to them. Most of my client referrals come from prior and current clients who value the service we provide and want us to do the same for their family member or friend.” As a result, over the years she has acquired an impressive degree of experience in all areas of family and matrimonial law, including mediation, custody, visitation, parental decision-making, maintenance, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, and civil litigation. “I wanted to become a lawyer because I am very good at problem solving and enjoy helping others,” explains Riewer, a Lake County-approved mediator who also has experience in corporate law and estate planning. “I get the opportunity to help them see the future they want and give them the strategy to achieve that better future.” Many of her firm’s clients are sophisticated professionals and business owners. Riewer, who holds a J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law and received her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, specializes in highnet-worth individuals, business owners, and professionals who need help equitably dividing complicated assets. “We have the legal and financial expertise to help clients obtain the best possible solution without creating unnecessary drama, acrimony, or attorneys’ fees,” she says, adding that while divorce is often adversarial, her firm aims to help clients recognize that working toward an amicable settlement costs less financially and emotionally. “This allows them to make smart decisions with confidence because they better understand their options.”

MARY COLE PARTNER
BRADY COLE TRIAL LAWYERS LLC
Mary Cole has her eye on the prize—which she has been working towards since being asked to put her hat into the ring in April 2023. “I am currently running for Lake County State’s Attorney, which, if successful, would make me the first female State’s Attorney in Lake County. I feel a sense of duty to serve the citizens of Lake County,” says Cole, a former Lake County prosecutor, graduate of The John Marshall Law School, and AAIM Award winner who has chosen purple as her campaign color for the November 5 election. “That is the color you get when blue and red come together.” She has built a reputation for treating both victims and defendants with respect, using an honest but aggressive approach to succeed. “A real public servant understands that it is an honor to be there for people during their hardest moments,” says Cole, a partner in Brady Cole Trial Lawyers LLC who in addition to her work at prestigious firms, has been both a prosecuting and defense attorney.
“Showing up for a person and treating them with dignity in their most undignified times is an opportunity to transform their life as well as your own.” She cites the influence of her mother, Mimi Cole—who was born in Thailand after her parents fled Communist China, overcoming significant life obstacles to become a successful businesswoman. This experience taught me to have compassion for my clients. As a result, Cole now navigates life with a mission to serve those around her, especially those who are most vulnerable. “It is through their personal hardship and suffering, and them allowing me to stand by them in their time of need, that I have an opportunity to rise to the occasion and become a champion,” she says. “There is nothing more honorable.”

SHANA VITEK
EQUITY PARTNER
BEERMANN LLP
Shana Vitek is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in the country. For more than 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law exclusively. She handles a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile and high-net-worth clients. Vitek’s ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a few attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and serves on the Board of Governors for the Illinois Chapter. “Every family is different, so each case that I handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “All initial consultations include information about the alternatives to litigation and keeping the divorce process out of court.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney. If a case can be handled using a cooperative approach, that is her preferred process. “It is more respectful, allowing the parties to decide what is best for their family while maintaining confidentiality and keeping sensitive personal details out of the public record.” Vitek believes it is important to give back to the community. She is Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. In partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, this first of its kind family law clinic provides pro bono legal services to individuals going through domestic relations proceedings who could not otherwise afford legal representation. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community, and given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters,” says Vitek.

COLLEEN M. BREEMS
PARTNER
BEERMANN LLP
Colleen M. Breems has been devoted to matrimonial and family law since the beginning of her legal career, working tirelessly to deliver results to the client in need. “I feel most rewarded when I work with individuals in the middle of crisis, and I can shepherd them to a better place than the one in which I found them,” says Breems, a partner at Beermann LLP. “It is also especially rewarding when I get happy and proud updates from the children I have represented. They all hold a special place in my heart.” In fact, fighting for the rights of children is what initially inspired Breems to become a lawyer. In addition to being an expert litigator, she is trained in collaborative divorce and often acts as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL), child representative, mediator, or parent coordinator.“I have always worked with children, and I have always had a passion in working with those who most need advocacy—including victims of domestic violence and children in the middle of family law disputes. I love being a voice for those who need it. Becoming a family law attorney felt like a natural choice, and being an attorney who advocates for children has been a calling. I could not imagine doing anything else.” One of her many philanthropic endeavors is serving as Vice President of the Advocacy Council of the Junior League of Chicago—a women’s voluntarism organization that trains women leaders. “I am passionate about this work, and all of the community service we provide to local women, children, and families,” she adds. “This work dovetails nicely with the work I do as a family law attorney, and allows me to expand my work into serving not just individuals, but the community.”

MICHAEL J. BERGER
PRINCIPAL & FOUNDER
BERGER SCHATZ LLP
Michael J. Berger co-founded Berger Schatz LLP in 1987 with the vision of building a family law firm that provided fair and honest counsel that clients could trust. More than three decades later, Berger Schatz continues to realize that commitment, delivering integrity-driven advocacy that has resulted in the firm being recognized as one of the finest matrimonial and family law firms in the United States. “I always strive to obtain a fair and equitable resolution that ensures a secure future for a non-working spouse while preventing unnecessary business interruptions for a working spouse by understanding the intricacies that face business owners and investors,” says Berger. Berger Schatz specializes in representing professionals and high-net-worth individuals in divorce actions involving complex issues, including business valuations, segregation of personal and enterprise goodwill interests, and protection of non-marital assets from a spouse’s marital claim. “My professional commitment to my clients and my ability to handle the most complex and difficult financial situations has been proven over my career—including winning major Appellate and Supreme Court cases.” Berger represents clients in all areas of family and matrimonial law and knows that the key to winning a client’s trust is to provide them with honest advice and unwavering advocacy. The wisdom of Berger’s straightforward approach is proven by his record of winning cases for some of the most well-known, high-profile and high-net-worth Chicagoans. An Illinois Institute of Technology graduate with a J.D. from Chicago Kent College of Law, Berger says one of the enduring lessons that got him where he is today dates back to the early 1980s, when he handled a divorce case in front of a corrupt Chicago judge. “Eventually I got the judge’s terrible rulings overturned by the appellate court, but that judge hated me until he retired,” he explains. “This taught me that you have to fight for your clients at whatever cost and be an optimist. I am still an optimist that ultimately justice will prevail.”

Cavanagh Sorich Law Group is a leading personal injury and medical malpractice law firm located in downtown Chicago. Led by founding partner Timothy J. Cavanagh who launched the firm in 1997, Cavanagh Sorich Law Group has successfully represented clients in many high-profile cases in Illinois and across the country for more than three decades. Cavanagh Sorich Law Group has obtained $750 million in verdicts and settlements for its clients including record-breaking triumphs in Illinois in a number of areas. The attorneys at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group have expertise in every facet of personal injury law from medical malpractice and wrongful death cases to catastrophic railroad crashes and trucking cases. The firm has obtained more than 75 verdicts and settlements exceeding $1 million. “When I started the firm, I wanted to work with attorneys committed to the cause for our clients. Our attorneys are not only outstanding trial lawyers, but they are also all very empathetic people who are accessible to our clients at all times,” says Tim Cavanagh. Tim’s wife Stacey Feeley Cavanagh is also a partner at the firm. The Cavanaghs have been married for 24 years and have two sets of triplets who are a year apart in high school. Before joining Cavanagh Sorich Law Group in 2009, Stacey was a partner at another prominent Chicago law firm. “I realized when I began working with Tim that I find it more fulfilling to represent people than corporations,” says Stacey Feeley Cavanagh. “To be able to obtain justice for those who
have lost loved ones or to give those who have been seriously injured the possibility of a better future is tremendously rewarding for all of us.”
In March 2024, Michael J. Sorich was elevated to named partner. He joined the firm 10 years ago as a partner after working 13 years at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office where he tried more than 50 cases and served as the youngest supervisor ever in the county’s civil division. Cavanagh and Sorich handled the landmark $20 million “code of silence” against the City of Chicago in federal court. The lawyers uncovered evidence at trial that the City of Chicago withheld critical evidence in discovery that should have been produced— which ultimately led to a $20 million settlement during Cavanagh’s closing argument. Recently, Cavanagh and Sorich obtained a $27 million wrongful death settlement in a trucking case, a $12.5 million medical malpractice settlement, and an $11 million settlement in a complex product liability case. “One of the things that sets us apart is our trial experience. This allows us to get the best results for our clients,” says Michael Sorich. “When a client loses a loved one or suffers another devastating loss, I cannot bring that person back but we can get our clients answers and provide them with financial security moving forward. That gives me tremendous satisfaction.” All three attorneys are active in professional organizations and their community. Timothy is the First Vice President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and will serve as President of the organization beginning in June of 2025. He also serves on the Board of his alma mater John Carroll University, and on the Ambassadors Board of Mercy Home for Boys & Girls. Timothy is active in the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholars Foundation. Stacey serves on the Guild Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago and volunteers at St. Ignatius College Prep, co-chairing a 2023 fundraiser with Timothy that raised more the $3.5 million for academic scholarships. Sorich is a sought-after public speaker on legal issues and is president of the Marist High School Law Association and serves on its board of directors as well.

JENNIFER HANSEN, ATTORNEY LARA CLEARY,
ATTORNEY
HANSEN & CLEARY LLC
North Shore attorneys Jennifer Hansen and Lara Cleary founded Hansen & Cleary LLC in 2017, bringing more than 30 years of collective experience and a common philosophy of client-centered representation to their boutique law practice. “Our mission at Hansen & Cleary is to offer the highest quality counsel to families, schools, and private clinicians, with the most empathetic, attentive, and personalized service possible,” they say. With a focus on representing children and families, individuals with disabilities, mental health professionals, and private schools in the greater Chicago area and throughout Illinois, the practice is concentrated in the areas of special education law, school law, mental health law, DCFS matters, and other disability related law. They each bring personal experience in these challenges to their work. “When I was in elementary school, I had a speech articulation issue ... so I received speech therapy services,” says Cleary, explaining that her experience led her to become a special education teacher before going to law school to focus on representing individuals with special needs. “Our advocacy and success on a case can change a child’s life.” Hansen’s path took her to study in the Netherlands and then to Illinois, where she worked as an assistant public defender. “I began to realize that many of my clients were adults with disabilities or mental health issues and I found that my empathy and understanding of individuals with disabilities really helped my representation,” she says, explaining that her parents worked with children with disabilities.” Cleary had an opening at her previous law firm and Hansen happily took on that role. Today, the duo says they are proud to support and guide their clients through the legal process with compassion and resolve.

TANYA STANISH
SENIOR PARTNER
SCHILLER DUCANTO & FLECK LLP
Tanya Stanish describes her profession as a family crisis manager, otherwise known as a divorce lawyer. Practicing for nearly 30 years, she has become a highly experienced negotiator and formidable litigator who represents a wide array of clients, from high-profile executives and Chicago’s talented athletes and music artists to business owners, spouses with generational wealth, and stay at-home parents. Her work includes every aspect of complex family law, including executive compensation plans, trusts and business interests, and high conflict child custody and parenting issues. Stanish’s combination of litigation and settlement expertise is rare among family law attorneys. If settlement fails, she has the skills and ability to handle intricate cases in the courtroom that many lawyers avoid or find difficult to present. She’s also taken over many cases from other divorce attorneys who prefer not to litigate against a contentious spouse or aggressive opposing counsel. “I am often sought out to represent a client who has a difficult spouse or a litigious attorney on the other side and sometimes you have to fight fire with fire,” Stanish says. “While my litigation skills are preeminent, I successfully negotiate most of my cases to resolution to the client’s satisfaction. Only a handful of cases need the courtroom.” Her strong integrity helps a client get to a resolution by way of facts and law. Stanish appreciates the many “best lawyers” awards she has received for her work as an attorney, but what’s most important to her are the letters and notes of appreciation from clients for the work she’s done for them. “They really touch me because I know that I have made a positive difference in someone’s life and have successfully gotten them through one of their toughest moments,” Stanish says.

KATHARINE HATCH
PARTNER
STEINER HOWETH PASQUESI & HATCH, LTD.
With over 17 years of courtroom experience, Katharine Hatch has honed a unique ability to read the room and most importantly the presiding judge, which is the key to her success as a trial lawyer. Hatch, who obtained her J.D. from the University of Minnesota School of Law, has litigated more than 50 trials— ranging from multi-million-dollar high-asset divorce cases to first-degree murder trials. Hatch believes winning in the courtroom is determined not by who is the loudest but by who is listening the best and is the most prepared. The depth and breadth of her trial experience has resulted in an attorney who has “seen everything,” giving her the confidence to aggressively pursue the best results for her clients. Even with the extent of her experience, Hatch firmly believes that “attorneys can never stop learning and should never be afraid to say, ‘I don’t know but I will find out!’” In 2023 Hatch was nominated as the president of the Lake County Bar Association to advocate for the legal profession and promote the rule of law. Hatch believes in advocating for her community and was elected to the Lake Bluff Village Board as a trustee in April of 2023. Hatch listens to clients and communicates with them early and often because she says it is the only way to ensure the best, individualized results. LIFETIME BANKER
As National Director for Private Banking at Fifth Third, Scott Landau helps lead a team based on the bank’s core value of being customer centric.
WORDS
BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
Scott Landau, a native of Massachusetts and graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, got his start in banking in 1994 when he went to work as Credit Process Auditor for BMO Harris Bank. He settled in comfortably to the banking industry and over the following years eventually took his credit analyst skills to the world of wealth management and private banking.
He now applies his three decades of experience as he serves as National Director of Private Banking for Fifth Third Bank, the Cincinnati-based financial institution that maintains an active presence in Chicago and throughout markets in the Midwest. Landau likes to say he “climbed the mountain.”
Fifth Third is the third largest consumer bank in the Midwest region but it operates more like a community bank, staying laser-focused on delivering customized services to clients.
“I was a private banker at one time in my life, so I know what it’s like to be in front of the client,” Landau says. “The best way to describe me is that I’ve done the work. I respect the people who do the work for me and with me. I always go back to my days being in front of the client, and it’s important to be there for our clients and not for ourselves. Everything is driven by the clients’ needs.”
Landau says his credit-heavy background makes him more effective as the leader of private banking, especially given the loan services Fifth Third Private Bank offers.
“We do a lot of commercial real estate lending and liquid secured lending at the Private Bank, and I like to say we’re open for business,” Landau says. “We look at credit as an opportunity to help our clients leverage their assets, and it differentiates us from other private banks. Credit is an important part of someone’s overall wealth management strategy.”
Landau says he’s pleased to be working at Fifth Third because of the ease with which he can do business in a way that upholds the bank’s underlying values of honesty and ethics.
“The people and the culture and workplace environment are important to me. Anywhere I’ve been, it’s always been about the people and culture,” says Landau. “I have four daughters and I’m proud to be able to tell them that as their father I work for a company that has a lot of respect for women, for diversity and inclusion, and for strong ethics. That’s what motivates me.”
A lot of banks might give lip-service to customer service, but Landau sees the relationship between banker and client as a partnership.
“It’s about giving the client the expertise and knowledge we bring to the table, Landau says.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE: EMFACE
ew Year. Younger face. What could be better than turning back the clock?
We at Skin Deep Medical Center and Body by Bloch are excited to introduce EMFACE. This is the first and only hands-free solution for treating facial skin and muscles in just 20 minutes.
No needles, no pain, no downtime. EMFACE simultaneously emits both synchronized radio frequency and HIFES-brand energies. The homogenous radio frequency heats collagen and elastin fibers while the HIFES stimulation emits thousands of pulses per session to contract delicate facial muscles. The recommended treatment course for the EMFACE therapy calls for four 20-minute sessions with each session completed 2 to 14 days apart.
Clinical studies concluded that participants who completed the recommended treatment course achieved a 37 percent reduction in wrinkles, 30 percent increase in facial muscle tone, and 23 percent lifting effect—with optimal results seen 6 to 12 weeks after the final treatment.
HIFES restores and elevates support of facial tissues by selectively contracting muscles and increasing density and quality of muscle structure.
Synchronized RF remodels and smoothes skin by heating the dermis and increasing the level of collagen and elastin fibers.
You begin to feel tangible results right after the treatments. Positive results are usually reported in 4 to 6 weeks after the last session and continue to improve up to 12 weeks.
To see if you are a candidate for this exciting technology schedule a consultation at Skin Deep Medical Spa in Highland Park.

CONSUL CONNECTOR
Yannick Tagand, Consul General of France, deepens connections between France and the Midwest.
WORDS BY LEXIE KNOX / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
Perched high above the city on the 37th floor sits the office of the Consul General of France. Surrounded by huge picture windows, it is one of the best views Chicago has to offer. However, for Yannick Tagand, the Consul General of France, moving to Chicago was not about the view. “It is about new perspectives—viewing things from the inside out. I want to understand how locals perceive France in order to build bridges and strengthen our partnerships,” Tagand explains. When he assumed his position and took over jurisdiction for 13 Midwestern states, Tagand came here to make a difference and leave his mark.
For Tagand, it is all part of a 20-year endeavor to create connections between France and the world. It’s no surprise that he is driven to experience the world through multiple lenses. Tagand attended the prestigious Sorbonne University and the Institute for Oriental Languages and decided to study Arabic, “just out of curiosity,” which would eventually be determinant in his future career path. At the university, he was surrounded by students from around the world and was introduced to new languages (he is fluent in French, Arabic, English, and Italian), cultures, and political ideals. He also learned the importance of connecting people, understanding political ideologies, and developing partnerships.
For Tagand, it is notable that this year brings two major events connecting the United States and France—the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion and the 2024 Summer Olympics, which is being hosted by the French sister city of Chicago, Paris.
The consulate has for many years been honoring WWII veterans by bestowing upon them the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award. It was imperative to Tagand to devote special attention to this honor this year as the 80th anniversary of D-Day approached, so that no one forgets the sacrifices these veterans made for France. Of the 14 veterans from the United States awarded the honor, six are from the Midwest. Those unable to attend the ceremony in France have been/or will be visited by Tagand at their homes to receive their awards. An important moment in history for both those who were there and those who worked diligently to present this acknowledgment. Tagand notes that France is America’s oldest ally and that to France this history is of utmost importance. “This connection must be kept alive.”
After university, Tagand’s early career brought him to many places including Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Tagand and his wife then spent the Arab Spring in Egypt, an “exciting time” for both historical and personal reasons. His son was born in Cairo, while political history was in the making. Tagand was excited when the opportunity arose for him to work in Chicago. “There is much to be done here in the Midwest. The relationship between the French and the Midwest has always been so important to the history here. Politically, economically, socially, France is part of the socio-economic fabric all around Chicago and the state of Illinois.”
As for the Olympics, the Office of the Consul of France is teaming up with local Park District camps to connect children to the games. Tagand argues it is vital for the students to understand the values of the Olympics are more important than the competitions.
After three years here in Chicago, he is entering his fourth and final year as Consul General. Tagand says leaving Chicago will be bittersweet. While he is passionate about local jazz bars and enjoying the lake, what he will miss the most is the people he has met. Tagand looks forward to his final year, which includes building new projects celebrating joint heritage and expanding the French language programs in Midwestern schools.
When asked which post he found the hardest to leave, he hesitates for a moment recalling fond memories from Egypt, and North Africa. Then he laughs and says, “Chicago! I have made many great connections here.”
