I

t is incredible what the love of an animal can do for the mental and physical well-being of anyone but the impact seems to increase exponentially for children and young adults. Created to honor the memory of Patrick Roemer, a Lake Forest teen who lived with anxiety and depression for most of his life, Paws for Patrick connects emotional support animals (ESAs) and therapy dogs with people living with mental illness.

“I like to think of our organization as three-tiered,” Roemer says. One of the organization’s main missions is to facilitate the acquisition of ESAs by first sourcing and providing animals and then offering training, education, and letters of certification. “The goal is to not only lessen the financial burden but also to make the process easier,” she explains. Paws for Patrick also provides opportunities for young people to interact with therapy dogs in group settings and individual sessions as well as in schools, youth groups, and events. It currently has a team of 20 dogs and their handlers who have multiple visits each week. A third integral part of the Paws for Patrick vision is to break the stigma of mental illness.

As chair, Roemer hopes to advance the organization’s mission by connecting with a younger audience. “We have received interest from about 150 youth volunteers, 15 of whom make up the executive junior board.”

The board organizes various events to spread awareness about the organization’s mission. Last May, National Mental Health Awareness month, Paws for Patrick kicked off the “Turn Our Towns Green” campaign in eight communities including several North Shore communities and schools. Lime green—the color representing mental health—ribbons were tied around trees, yard signs were placed in yards and on city property, and community board signs were displayed. Woodlands invited its students to tie green ribbons around the trees on campus during their lunch period. The signs and ribbons remained throughout the month.

“For this year’s May initiative, we already have over 20 communities participating, including all of the North Shore towns, as well as some national universities and colleges. We hope to eventually ‘Turn Our Country Green’ in May,” says Roemer.

Professionals in the mental health community echo the positive impact of animals. “Children diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression benefit from these special dogs because not only is the dog’s love unconditional, but additionally the child is protected in situations that are triggers for his or her emotional fragility.

The simple love of a dog can make a real difference in the lives of these children,” explains Ellen Rieger, an Evanston psychotherapist who specializes in grief and loss.

throughout most of his young life, and this disease took him from his loved ones at a young age. “Mental illness has long been stigmatized and is often ignored or seen as a weakness,” says Roemer. Many people live with the disease, but no one really wants to acknowledge or accept it. Often treatment is delayed or denied because of how it is viewed by society. Little by little the stigma surrounding mental illness is changing; however until that stigma is broken animals can help to provide a feeling of love, security, and comfort for those who need it. “I saw firsthand the impact an animal had on someone living with anxiety and depression. Paws for Patrick allows me to carry my brother with me every day by honoring his memory in a way that I believe he would be proud of.”

n Illinois, courts previously viewed animals as property. Pet custody did not appear in divorce case law until 2015. In that case, the husband sought visitation with the parties’ two dogs, who had been in the wife’s possession during separation. The court viewed this as a property issue and looked to the Animal Control Act to define “owner.” Using the Act’s definition of owner, the court awarded custody to the wife without any visitation to the husband. The courts believed that awarding pet visitation served as an invitation for endless post-divorce litigation. Under this case law, if two parties separated, the party who obtained possession and control of the pet prior to the divorce was awarded pet custody.

Illinois law has since adapted to the way families view and treat their pets. One study found that more than 95 percent of pet owners described their dog as a family member. Owners form strong emotional bonds with their pets, buying presents, grooming products, and even hosting pet parties. In 2018, the Illinois legislature enacted laws that address companion animals. The term “companion animal” includes essentially any pet not considered a service animal.

The new statute, effective January 1, 2018, allows parties to enter into an agreement that addresses the ownership, responsibility, and visitation of a companion animal. Pursuant to the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act, the ownership of and responsibility for companion animals found to be marital assets will be allocated to one party or to the parties jointly. The animal will be considered a marital asset if it was acquired during the marriage and was not an inheritance or gift to one spouse. The statute does not address what happens if the animal was a gift to the children.

When devising a pet schedule, the parties must each consider the best way to transport the pet between homes, who will pay for the pets’ expenses (including food and veterinary care), who will be responsible for grooming, and what items are needed in each home to keep the pet happy and healthy.

If the parties cannot agree, then either party may ask the court for the temporary allocation of, sole or joint possession of, and responsibility for, a companion animal jointly owned by the parties. When awarding possession, responsibility, and visitation, the court will consider the pet’s well-being. Some of the factors considered include if there are children, where the children will be living, whether one spouse was more instrumental in purchasing the pet, and who was most responsible for the pet’s care during the marriage, including daily feedings, walks, and veterinary appointments.

arlton Marcyan isn’t a therapist. He’s not a life coach. He’s a family law attorney. But as he readily notes, “If you can’t be empathetic, if you can’t bond with your client in understanding his or her insecurities and issues and priorities, you won’t have much of a career.”

A senior partner at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, Marcyan has spent nearly forty years assisting individuals at some of the toughest moments of their lives. And he prides himself on his determination to listen effectively, to ask the kind of questions that will not only help him make the best case, but that reveal the emotional character of a client and allow him to anticipate how well that individual will meet the challenges that are part and parcel of any divorce proceeding. “Many times, a client may neglect to share something that could be important,” observes the Lake Forest resident. “But that’s human nature. So I’ll initiate a dialogue that may not appear to have a direct bearing on the case, but these conversations put clients at ease and they begin to open up. I’m prospecting and the nuggets I unearth can be tremendously valuable, especially in a custody-related case.”

Expert at every strategy available in a divorce proceeding—including mediation, litigation, and binding arbitration—Marcyan has been instrumental in formalizing collaborative practice as a constructive approach for achieving satisfying outcomes. A resolution method in which the parties agree not to go to court, collaborative practice is intended to reduce tension and animosity as attorneys, financial experts, and other professionals guide clients to good faith settlements. Shares Marcyan, “I was actively involved in convincing the Illinois State Bar Association to endorse collaborative practice and help us get the Illinois Supreme Court to adopt a Supreme Court Rule that acknowledges it as a distinct and specific process.”

Like mediation—in which spouses meet with a mediator to come to agreements on child support, custody, and property— collaborative practice affords couples privacy. “When you go to court,” reminds Marcyan, “there are hearings and all your family issues and personal foibles are exposed publicly. With collaborative practice and mediation, that is all contained and confidential.

And you have a greater ability to participate and shape the outcome. When both sides understand that they can do something that’s mutually beneficial and can get the case over in maybe four months rather than two years, they realize that this is a much better approach than litigation.”

Key to Marcyan’s success is his fluency in all things financial.

Before graduating from what is now known as University of Illinois-Chicago School of Law, he earned a degree in accounting from DePaul University and worked for Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). “While I was in law school, I sat for the CPA exam, passed, and went back to Coopers & Lybrand as a tax attorney. I did that for little over a year, but I really wanted to be a litigator.” At the time, there was a move nationally to change the complexion of divorce law and deal with financial holdings in a more equitable manner. “Serendipitously,” recalls Marcyan, “Schiller DuCanto & Fleck was looking for somebody who understood balance sheets and various asset types. So I was at the right place at the right time.”

In recent years, Marcyan has continued to expand his expertise, earning an MBA with a specialization in organizational behavior from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, and a MCR from Dominican University in conflict resolution. When he’s not bolstering his bona fides—or relaxing with his wife Ana, their three children and two grandkids—Marcyan gives time to the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), which works with attorneys, mental health experts, and financial professionals to help families negotiate major life changes. Anne Loucks Gallery is set to debut Painted Short Stories featuring the work of artists Rodger Bechtold and Mary Jo O’Gara.

lencoe’s bastion of contemporary art, the Anne Loucks Gallery, debuts its latest exhibition— Painted Short Stories. The show will run through the end of June and features 30 paintings by local artists Rodger Bechtold and Mary Jo O’Gara.

Bechtold has built a reputation for his contribution to contemporary landscape painting, and his work is punctuated by energy and charged with color, all connected by place and movement. Similarly, O’Gara’s still life and landscape works showcase a commitment to color, freshness, and spontaneity.

“It’s a fabulous representation of both artists,” says Gallery Director Anne Loucks. “There is so much positive energy that radiates from both Mary Jo and Rodger’s work. With seemingly

effortless brushwork, they both express a sense of exuberance through their use of color and light.”

The exhibition title Painted Short Stories is meant to describe how both artists use their canvases to capture a moment in time, suggesting an emotional connection to the landscape around them as well as a fascination with the underlying stories that may have unfolded in those places over the years.

“We’ve paired Mary Jo and Rodger together because of the dialogue the two artists share in their paintings,” explains Loucks.

“Both focus on the Midwest’s landscape as their subject, including its barns, outbuildings, wide-open spaces, trees, fields, and fauna. Their paintings are beautifully rendered and use vibrant color to express a response to their subject matter. They both

communicate a wonderful sense of place that is unique to the Midwestern landscape.”

Bechtold is a Midwest native and nurtured his interest in the visual arts at Chicago’s American Academy of Art College and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. For many years, he worked in commercial art illustration before pursuing landscape painting full time in the 1980s.

What really ignited this passion for painting was his exposure to mentor Wolf Kahn through the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Art as part of the Masters Art Program. “Looking back, painting with Wolf Kahn and painting in Tuscany are highlights of my life,” says Bechtold.

His vibrant paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and art centers across the United States.

Twice his work was selected for the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies program by the U.S. ambassadors to Georgia and Luxembourg, and he also created two large-scale paintings (12-feet-wide by 15-feet-high) for the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. “The heartland possesses such uncomplicated and straightforward beauty,” says Bechtold. “The simplicity of these ever-changing vistas resonates with me the way music does. My hope is that my painting might somehow rekindle interest in what wonder surrounds us every day and yet goes unnoticed.”

O’Gara came to art later in life, taking her first class on a whim in 1990 at age 40 and then falling in love with the discipline.

Mostly self-taught, she now serves on the faculty at the North Shore Art League where she teaches oil and gouache paintings.

“I’m proof that you can follow your dreams later in life,” says O’Gara. “When you pursue something you’re passionate about, doors open.”

In 2015, O’Gara provided 65 paintings for a barrier-free apartment building for disabled adults in Matteson, Side by Side, Rodger Illinois, built by the nonBechtold, oil on canvas, 36” x 52” profit organization Over the Rainbow, which is dedicated to providing independent living solutions for individuals with physical disabilities.

This building received the 2016 Vision Award from the Urban Land Institute. Her

paintings have also hung in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, as well as in the Cook County Law Library in Chicago.

Traditionally a landscape painter, O’Gara has recently ventured into the abstract space; some of her newest abstract work will be on display.

“During the COVID quarantine, I studied contemporary abstract expressionists like Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly,” says O’Gara. “I wasn’t going out in the landscape like I used to, so it freed me up to try some new things. I’m excited about this change in style. The newer pieces are more spontaneous and freer.”

Loucks says the new abstract paintings are filled with the same sense of harmonious color and energy as O’Gara’s landscapes. Between Bechtold and O’Gara, Painted Short Stories will feature 20 new works in combination with older pieces. “Anne is very special to me, as her gallery is the first I ever worked with,” says O’Gara.

“I’m so grateful to be showing with Rodger. Our work goes really well together. It’s a dream come true.”

The gallery’s exhibition schedule for the next year features some new artists for the gallery, including photographer Rodney Smith and abstract artists Brian Coleman, Maura Segal, and Stephen Seinberg. Loucks also has shows planned for Sally Michel and Maggie Meiners, as well as the gallery’s annual photography show that will feature new work by David Burdeny, Joshua Jensen-Nagle, and Laurie Victor Kay. “Art continues to be a universal language that connects us to the world around us and offers a place for personal expression, respite, and introspection,” says Loucks. “More than ever, people are focusing on their homes, investing in their living environments, and making art a central part of that. We continue to see a strong interest in painting and photography, especially largescale work. We also see clients continue to be drawn to work that evokes an emotional response whether that comes from color, subject, or composition.”

ewelry is more than just a dazzling accessory for ones’ outfits—it is also full of stories celebrating important milestones and capturing cherished family memories.

So often it is symbolic, acting as a little celebration of who we are. As a specialist in Hindman’s Jewelry & Watches Department, I have the privilege to hear so many clients reminisce as they unveil their jewelry boxes and consider what they might be willing to put “under the hammer.”

I have always loved jewelry for as long as I can remember and have been fascinated by the idea of jewelry as a form of adornment. Growing up in Australia with two sisters, there was great feminine energy in our home, and jewelry and fashion were always keenly discussed topics.

I became increasingly captivated by jewelry when I moved to New York City. I first worked as an assistant to a Broadway director but quickly felt myself being lured into the jewelry industry and all things sparkly. I achieved my GG (Graduate Gemology) diploma from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), and from there, I found myself on Madison Avenue working alongside renowned diamond houses. It was a magical experience—I was absolutely in my element handling the most extraordinary gemstones.

Now I’ve landed on the North Shore of Chicago and have been living here for almost 10 years. I have found my jewelry niche working as a specialist at Hindman. The auction world is so thrilling—after all my last name is Hammer, so it is absolutely where I am meant to be. In my role as a jewelry specialist, I often get questions about why one would want to buy or sell at auction.

n June 9, Kelli O’Hara, Tony Award-winning singer and actress and current co-star of the HBO Max hit The Gilded Age, will be the featured performer in Kelli O’Hara Sings Broadway with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). This is the CSO’s 31st Annual Corporate Night, a fundraising event presented by the CSO Association (CSOA) and the CSOA’s League and Overture Council. O’Hara shares insight into her current roles and what sparked her interest in the stage.

What can we look forward to with the upcoming performance of Kelli O’Hara Sings Broadway with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? Will the program include any songs from shows you’ve been in? The show will absolutely have songs from shows I have done on Broadway as well as shows that Steven [Reineke, conductor] and I have performed together with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. With such a gorgeous orchestra, we want to take advantage of some beautiful, classic orchestrations for these songs but also include newer ones as well.

As an award-winning actress on both screen and stage, what do you like most about live performances? I love the relationship between artist and audience. It is a collaboration for sure. We need each other to make that theater magic. But having said that, the rehearsal process is probably my very favorite part—preparing for that first curtain up.

When did you know you wanted to become a performer? When I was about 10, I sang for the first time in front of a crowd at school and never looked back.

What are some of the things you like most about being on The Gilded Age? Sets? Costumes? Fellow castmates? All of the above.

It was an extraordinary combination of beauty, style, artistry, and mentorship.

Any inside scoop you can share with us about season two? None at all! If I told you, I’d have to kill you, and that’s not my style.

What have been some of your very favorite roles and why? I loved Francesca in The Bridges of Madison County because it was a project we built together. I loved Clara in Light in the Piazza because she challenged me and gave me a real start. So many more. I loved them all.

Is there anything special you’re looking forward to doing while You are currently one of the stars of the acclaimed series The you’re in Chicago? Having some deep-dish pizza.

BREAKING GOOD Ravinia Festival’s inaugural Breaking Barriers festival will celebrate women in the roles of conductor, business leader, mentor, and more.

IRST. When one reads Marin Alsop’s biographical details, this word predominates. First woman to serve as head of a major orchestra in the United States, South America, Britain, and Austria. First conductor to win a MacArthur Fellowship. This single word demonstrates what remarkable talent, dogged perseverance, keen work ethic, and savvy mentorship has achieved.

Alsop—a New York native, a lifelong violinist, Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Ravinia Festival Chief Conductor since 2020—has proceeded to break barrier after barrier in the classical music world.

“First of all, Marin is incredibly articulate and passionate about music. Her journey to becoming a conductor is an inspirational one,” observes Ravinia Festival President and CEO Jeff Haydon, a California native who, before assuming the helm at Ravinia Festival in September 2020, held executive positions at the Ojai Music Festival and Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts.

This summer Alsop, in partnership with Haydon, adds another first to her biography: Ravinia Festival’s inaugural Breaking Barriers festival, which celebrates the diverse artists and leaders at the forefront of classical music today and in the future.

Scheduled for July 29 to 31 and featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) at the iconic venue in Highland Park, this year’s festival focuses on women conductors. The celebration includes three main-stage concerts with wrap-around programming and events each day, such as roundtable discussions, master classes, symposia, and a film screening of The Conductor, a documentary chronicling Alsop’s achievement of her childhood dream of conducting.

Alsop curates and leads three weeks of programs with the CSO each summer, including the festival’s annual fundraising gala concert, and will work closely with Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play education programs to inspire young Chicagoland musicians.

One of Alsop’s early heroes and mentors was Leonard Bernstein, the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra. Through his music, he canonized the female voice. Fittingly, the CSO will perform Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3: Kaddish on day two of Breaking Barriers.

Another mentor, Tomio Taki, played a vital role in Alsop’s early career by underwriting the Concordia Orchestra; an orchestra Alsop formed when she realized she would have to create her own conducting opportunities. “For conducting, unless you have 40 people come over to your house every day to play, you can’t ever practice,” explained Alsop in a 2015 interview. “So, you can’t ever get experience because no one will let you conduct because you didn’t conduct before.”

Alsop honored this pivotal relationship when she created the Taki Alsop Fellowship, which mentors, supports, and promotes women conductors as they advance in their professional careers.

the previous and current fellows, offer networking and education opportunities, and showcase their talent on Ravinia’s stages.

Twelve Taki Alsop Fellowship honorees will perform during the Breaking Barriers weekend.

“It’s time,” Haydon says, “to spotlight females and recognize their significant contributions as conductors, and we’re excited to do that this summer at Ravinia Festival.”

The initial day of Breaking Barriers will open with a panel discussion—moderated by ABC 7 Weekend News co-anchor Karen Jordan—featuring women business leaders in Chicago.

“Women business leaders and women conductors have experienced similar journeys,” Haydon says.

A CSO concert celebrating the Taki Alsop Fellowship’s 20th anniversary follows. Alsop will conduct it with guest conductors Anna Duczmal-Mróz, a current Taki fellow, and past Taki fellows Laura Jackson and Jeri Lynne Johnson.

Five days before the start of Breaking Barriers, on July 24, Alsop will serve as CSO conductor at the Gala Evening benefiting Reach Teach Play. Ravinia Festival tapped Tony Award-winning singer Leslie Odom Jr., of Hamilton fame, to perform as vocalist.

As for Ravinia Festival’s stellar 2022 summer lineup, 50 artists will make their Ravinia debuts, including Pitbull, Erykah Badu, and Ziggy Marley. Among the returning acts are Sting, Emmylou Harris, and esperanza spalding.

“People are ready to get out and visit us. Time spent at Ravinia Festival—it’s certainly something we all could use now,” explains Haydon.

ablé is French for “sandy,” an apt description for the delicate crumbly texture of these buttery, almond-enriched cookies that originated in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, France.

Also known as Sablé Breton, or French butter cookies, they are cousins to shortbread but are shaped into rounds rather than fingers. As I have been working more with natural sweeteners, these are made with maple sugar, rather than the usual cane sugar, in a recipe adapted from British chef Dione Lucas, the first female graduate of Le Cordon Bleu.

The luscious lavender ice cream is a snap to prepare without need for an ice cream maker.

You’ll just need whipping cream, whole milk steeped with culinary-grade lavender, vanilla paste, and sweetened condensed milk. The lavender flowers add little pops of flavor and a beautiful scent. NOTE: You’ll want to prepare the ice cream the day before serving—it takes six hours to freeze.

For lavender ice cream (Makes 3 pints): • 1 cup whole milk • 3 teaspoons culinary-grade dried lavender • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste • 2 pints (four cups) heavy whipping cream • 2, 14-oz cans sweetened condensed milk For almond sablés: • 1 cup blanched slivered almonds, divided (half for the dough; half to top cookies) • 1 1/2 sticks butter, slightly softened • 1/2 cup maple sugar • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons spiced rum • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted • 1 large egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon water METHOD For lavender ice cream: Prepare milk: In a small pot over medium heat, warm milk to a simmer. Remove from heat. Stir in 3 teaspoons dried culinary-grade lavender and vanilla paste. Pour into a bowl. Press a sheet of plastic wrap into the bowl to come in contact with the surface of the milk. Refrigerate for two hours, while you make the cookies.

Finish ice cream: In the bowl of a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, whip heavy whipping cream to peaks. Using a spatula and an over/ under motion, fold in the sweetened condensed milk. Stir in the lavender milk. Pour mixture into three shallow two-cup containers with lids. Press plastic wrap in contact with the surface of the cream. Cover with lids. Freeze until firm (about six hours).

For almond sablés: Set oven rack to the center position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grind 1/2 cup of the blanched almond slivers very fine. (A wellcleaned spice or coffee grinder works well for this, pulse in short bursts.) Set aside.

In the bowl of a standing mixer with the paddle attachment, whip the butter until fluffy. Add the maple sugar and pinch of salt and whip again until smooth. Add the rum and ground almonds.

Beat again until incorporated. Working a scoop at a time, with mixer on low speed, beat in the flour, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Beat until all flour has been added and the dough is smooth.

Spread a clean work surface with plastic wrap.

Scoop dough onto plastic. Gather up the corners of the plastic and squeezing through it, work and knead the dough until there are no crumbles. Place the dough on your work surface, knead just a bit more. Shape into a ball and divide in half. Spread worksurface with parchment paper. Flatten half of the dough into a rectangle on the paper, cover with plastic wrap and roll out into 1/8 inch thickness. Leaving dough rectangle on parchment, transfer to a cookie sheet and refrigerate. Repeat with remaining ball of dough.

Once dough is well chilled, use a 1 1/2 inch round cutter to cut dough into circles. Place cookies close together on parchment-lined sheet pans. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of slivered almonds onto tops of cookies.

Press nuts into cookies. Brush again with more egg wash. Bake in 350-degree oven for 13 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool cookies on wire racks.

Discovering Door County all over again.

his road is worthy of a Maserati convertible,” declared my friend Santosh as I navigated my trusty Hyundai around 15 curves, weaving right and left like a kid dodging cones in the road. The thrill lasted just a few minutes, yet I could only imagine how glorious this drive would be in an open-top car under glistening autumn leaves.

That unexpected curvy road (more on this later) was just one of many highlights of a three-day summer visit to the Door County Peninsula, the distinguishable narrow thumb of Wisconsin that juts 75 miles into Lake Michigan and offers 300 miles of shore-

line. I had been to Door County many times in my youth and fondly remembered the cherry picking, fish boils, and Peninsula State Park hikes, but this journey was all about checking out newer places and visiting spots that had long been on my list.

I selected the recently opened The Dörr Hotel as our three-day basecamp. Set in the heart of Sister Bay and opened in the spring of 2021, the four-story property has the distinction of being the area’s first newly built hotel in almost 18 years.

“We saw a need for a new contemporary hotel that reflected the area’s natural beauty and Scandinavian heritage,” says The Dörr’s principal owner Christopher Schmeltz. Chicago-based Aria Group Architects interpreted this vision and created an interior

with a modern Nordic sensibility. The impressive two-story lobby, Eagle Tower at Peninsula State Park. Its dominant fireplace, flanked by log towers and comfortable seating, is an inviting setting for drinks and small plates in the evening and a complimentary light breakfast in the morning. Guest Experience Hosts offer touring suggestions along with restaurant and theater reservations. Accommodations are soothing—light and bright with white shiplap walls—and nice touches like in-room refrigerators, comfy bathrobes, and Keurig coffee machines.

The Dörr isn’t the only new spot popping up in downtown Sister Bay, once primarily known for the goats grazing on Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant’s grass roof. Now, you can find great coffee shops like Skip Stone Coffee Roasters and Analog Ice Cream and Coffee. Johnson’s children have opened Stabbur, an outdoor beer garden along with Skål at Al Johnson’s, a contemporary Scandinavian shop. There’s even a vegetarian restaurant (except for the brats), called Roots Inn & Kitchen.

Sister Bay is just one of 19 communities making up the peninsula. Venturing to the area involves some advance planning, along with checking hours of operation, especially if you have a “must special dinner in the barn, and the nearby Off the Wheel Pottery, visit” hit list. check out the recently reopened Eagle Tower. Fully handicap accessible, the tower features an impressive 850-foot ramp that traverses up to the top of the tower revealing panoramic views of the park, nearby islands, and the Upper Michigan shoreline.

Theater – Catching an outdoor production at Northern Sky Theater in Peninsula State Park or at Peninsula Players is a summer highlight. Another great option is Door Shakespeare, a local theater company offering performances on the grounds of the beautiful Björklunden Estate, a 423-acre property bequeathed to Lawrence University by Highland Park, Illinois residents Donald and Winifred Boynton. Head to the show early and take time to enjoy the lakeside grounds and the estate’s lovely stave chapel (a medieval wooden church) featuring 41 hand-painted frescos.

Bailey’s Harbor –Bailey’s Harbor has certainly evolved. Located on the east side of the Peninsula, often referred to as the quiet Lake Michigan side, the Door County Brewing Company and Music Hall and Bearded Heart Coffee dominate the main drag. Heirloom Café & Provisions is a not-to-be-missed breakfast and lunch spot.

And I bibbed up for the lobster boil (this is Door County after all) at the lovely waterside Harbor Fish Market & Grille.

Washington Island – We never would have discovered the aforementioned curvy road had it not been for this adventure.

Heading from Gills Rock at the tip of the peninsula toward Northport to catch the car ferry, we came upon the Highway 42 curves. Some say the road was created to avoid telephone poles, others speculate it was the hand of the famed landscape archi-

Once on the Island, visitors can choose to take the 90-minute Cherry Train tour or rent bikes, mopeds, or ATVs. We stuck with our car due to time constraints. Those who bring their own bikes can leave from Gills Harbor on the Island Clipper. Day-trippers should not try to walk as Washington Island is 35-miles in circumference.

One of the most impressive attractions is Stavkirke, a stave church inspired by one built in Borgun, Norway in 1150. Created by Washington Island residents and completed in 1995, it’s a sight to behold and reflects the area’s dedication to its roots. Not far away is the aroma of Provence. Fragrant Isle, the Midwest’s largest lavender farm, is a favorite attraction featuring a large shop and farm. Visitors flock here especially in July to see the blooming buds and pick up scented lavender products.

Next stop, Sievers School of Fiber Arts, to learn more about their three and five-day weaving, knitting, and looming classes while checking out their distinctive line of gifts. Nearby, the quirky roadside décor of Fiddlers Green called to us for a closer

look. Billed as an adventurer’s oasis, this eatery is brilliantly decorated with vintage finds, and offers live music on a trailer stage.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch at Schoolhouse Beach, known for its perfectly smooth white stones. These rocks are so rare they’re only found on five beaches in the world. If you’re caught pocketing one, it will cost you a $250 fine.

Curious about Rock Island, one mile off Washington Island, we stopped at Jackson Harbor to check it out. From early June to early October, the Karfi Ferry transports visitors to this car and bike-free island that features hiking, swimming, fishing, and overnight “leave no trace” camping. Pottawatomie, the area’s oldest lighthouse and one of 11 in Door County, is located here.

Although we were tempted by the quick 15-minute ride over, we had run out of time. We vowed we’d be back. There was just too much left to discover.

TRAVEL GURU Royal Travel & Tours’ Kendra Thornton celebrates the company’s 50th anniversary.

T

his year, family-owned travel agency Royal Travel & Tours will celebrate 50 years of business. Founded in 1972 by Larry and Kay Berke, the agency is now run by their daughter Kendra Thornton, who took the reins in 2016.

“It’s pretty rare to still be family-owned and operated at the size we are,” says Thornton. “We have 14 people on our team and are one of the top-selling agencies in Illinois.”

With half a century of experience, the Royal Travel & Tours team has unparalleled knowledge of—and access to—the finest travel experiences in the world.

“Coming out of COVID makes the 50-year milestone even sweeter,” says Thornton. “We survived in an industry hard hit by the pandemic and are starting to thrive again. Being part of the North Shore community has been the biggest reason we’re still here. It’s an incredible community that not only values supporting local businesses but that also puts travel, experiences, and time with family and friends above so many other things.”

Business, she says, has been booming as people return to travel.

And the industry has evolved to become more tech-forward, with touchless check-in to minimize human-to-human contacts, QR codes at restaurants for menu access, and more. As such, the Royal Travel & Tours team has seen an influx of both last-minute travel as well as bucket list trip planning.

According to Thornton, Western Europe such as France, Spain, Italy, England, and Ireland, is extremely popular right now, along with South Africa, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Greece, French Polynesia, the Maldives, and Dubai.

Regardless of destination, some travelers are looking for authenticity and are hoping for a full immersion in the cultures of their destination. Others are embracing wellness, hoping to relax and unplug after a tumultuous few years. And some are leaning into gluttony, opting for food- and wine-appreciation trips.

“We are seeing a lot of multi-generational trips, too,” says Thornton. “People have missed out on a lot of birthdays and holidays, so they’re making up for lost time.”

Some of the most memorable moments Royal Travel & Tours have planned for the clients in recent years include a private hiking trip through Muir Woods in Sausalito; a private beach stargazing experience in Mexico with a mariachi band to celebrate an anniversary; a gluten-free cooking class in Italy; and a bicycle food tour in Copenhagen with travelers riding bikes to 10 different meals, stopping for each course.

For clients concerned about traveling safely due to COVID or global unrest, Thornton recommends a private yacht charter in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, or an African safari. Royal Travel & Tours has seen an increase in clients renting Richard Branson’s islands in the British Virgin Islands for a COVID-friendly, private experience.

The team creates fully customized itineraries for their clients in a process Thornton likens to that of a personal shopper. Some clients like to be fully booked with every minute planned, while others prefer to lock in the hotel and flights with more time to wing it. The Royal Travel & Tours team keeps that in mind, planning a trip 100 percent unique to the traveler.

Thornton and her team travel extensively to stay abreast of the latest trends. Thornton has already visited Cuba, Hawaii, Mexico, London, and South Africa this year and she will head to Turkey, Greece, and Spain this summer. Her team has been busy traveling as well, spending time in Saudi Arabia, England, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Dubai, and more, in what Thornton calls a “canvas of the continents” that’s an effort to “practice what we preach.”

Thornton herself is on the advisory board of Travel + Leisure magazine, and two of Royal Travel & Tours’ advisors – Brittney Magner and Melissa Lee – are on the magazine’s A-list. Two others – Stacey Cohen and Tara Koehler – have been recognized

by Condé Nast Traveler as best in the industry.

“We have a lot of experts on our team, which is unique for a company of this size,” says Thornton. “It’s been fun to be creative again. I have a renewed appreciation for the industry and for what we do on a daily basis; that is, make people’s dreams come true and create memories that last a lifetime.”

Winnetka’s Alexandra Kaehler brings a timeless, fanciful flair to a 1940s Hubbard Woods home that would surely make Wes Anderson smile.

here is liking the color eggplant and then there is living with it painted floor to ceiling. Those who can fearlessly make such a selection for their living space are designer Alexandra Kaehler’s kind of people.

Just such an adventurous couple found their way to Kaehler in late 2020 to help them reimagine their traditional 1940s Hubbard Woods home.

“This is one of the real beauties of social media,” says Kaehler with a laugh. “When my clients reached out to me about their home redesign, they already had a pretty good idea of my aesthetic. While I can always work with any client on any type of design they have in mind, it’s so much fun to work with people who trust the process and are ready to just go for it.”

By the time the husband and wife had their first meeting with Kaehler, they had a very thoughtful and specific inspiration to share.

“We were channeling our inner Wes Anderson to create an unexpected, cohesive design,” Kaehler says of the American filmmaker whose movies are known for their eccentricity and unique visual styles. “The clients were looking to make their home feel bold and whimsical—to take their old home and freshen it with color. They weren’t worried about playing it safe and that made it so much fun.”

The home had beautiful bones that had been well-preserved with details like traditional molding that framed most of its rooms. “My clients asked me to help them embrace these more traditional architectural elements but asked for my help in making them a little funky,” she explains. “They knew how much I loved color and pattern and the way these could play off of each other.”

Kaehler turned to her favorite tool for making a dramatic impact—paint.

“Clients are always surprised by how much drama paint alone can create,” Kaehler explains. “When we were looking at painting the sunroom, we took the color from floor to ceiling—including the beautiful moldings. Keeping the moldings white just didn’t make sense in this space anymore.”

And when Kaehler speaks of paint color, while she has done her fair share of projects using Kitchen pantry door many of the neutral colors that

are popular of late, it was a palette of soft turquoise blues and you guessed it—eggplant—that she pulled from her toolbox for this project.

“Remember, it’s Wes Anderson and whimsy that we were using as our inspiration points. We also had this deep, rich forest green-patterned wallpaper from William Morris that had been installed in the dining room right before we started working together,” she says.

“It was a great jumping-off point for us.” The only challenge in using such saturated colors in an older home was applying them to old plaster walls. “It took a little finesse, but the final result is magic.”

Kaehler continued the kaleidoscope of patterns seen in the dining room wallpaper into the kitchen, creating a banquette seating area that was both practical and a work of art in itself.

“When I talked with the homeowners about the seating in the kitchen, I explained that having a typical round table and chairs centered in the room wouldn’t give them the flexibility that a banquette might. It also gave us the opportunity to make this a focal point in the space.”

Kaehler’s team ran with this idea, creating a custom upholstered half-circle banquette, with a blue-and-white herringbone patterned fabric that is finished with a bright red fabric that you can only see hints of when you’re looking at it straight on. A white rectangular table and four blue-and-white Serena & Lily chairs finish the space.

“I think my favorite part of this vignette is the artwork above the banquette,” Kaehler says. “I’m really not a person who loves

red, but I was so attracted to how the red and turquoise played off each other in this print. The clients agreed that it was just perfect in this space.”

Flanking the art piece, are two circular-shaped, retro-looking white and brushed gold sconces. These light fixtures also pick up on the circle pattern introduced in the dining room wallpaper.

And while this kitchen eating area is a showstopper, it’s also practical for the homeowner’s young family. “The soft blue grasscloth-looking wallpaper is actually vinyl,” she says. “It’s very pretty but easy to clean.”

In addition to warming up the bright new white kitchen cabinetry with vinyl wallpaper, Kaehler’s team replaced a barn door that was disguising the kitchen’s pantry with one that would have been true to homes in the 1940s.

“I love this door so much,” Kaehler adds. “We draped the window of it with a red and white stripe fabric, and it makes such a statement behind the gold filigree in the glass.”

While Kaehler selected nearly every color and furnishing throughout the home’s first floor, it was the last piece she chose that she calls her favorite.

“The dining room chandelier was the very last piece we selected,” she says. “I’m not sure why it took so long, but it was definitely worth the wait. It has this modern playful feel to it, but somehow also feels timeless. It’s so special, so whimsical—it captures this home perfectly.”

For high school entrance, spring of 7th grade. For college entrance, spring of 10th grade Earlier starts—rather than cramming last minute—allow students to space out and optimize their learning to maximize academic and test performance and, as a result, achieve more successful outcomes. In compiling and analyzing our own data of thousands of students over twenty years of instruction, there is a clear relationship between preparation time and performance. Students who start earlier can double their scores.

Preparation & practice time improve performance In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell popularized the claim that, whether in sports, music, or academic performance, 10,000 hours of practice is how long it takes to become an expert in something.

Not only is this claim impractical in most contexts (10 hours a week for 20 years to get to expert level—yikes!), but its focus on quantity over quality obscures the true value of high-quality learning practice: a cycle of study, retention, performance, insightful feedback, modification, and improvement.

In fact, a study published in Psychological Science found that looking at quantity alone accounted for only 4 percent of the variance in performance in education. That said, we know Gladwell is correct in that having enough time to prepare matters; there is certainly a minimum amount of practice required to develop expertise. But why?

In her research on choking under pressure, discussed in her 2010 book Choke, former Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago and current President at Barnard College Sian Beilock highlights why having the time to practice matters: it reduces the burden of stress on working memory, so the capacity for thinking and problem solving is improved by mitigating the impact of anxiety during high-stakes events like high school and college entrance exams.

Beilock’s research can be located within a century of research on “the spacing effect:” the finding that long-term learning is promoted when learning events are spaced out over time, rather than presented in immediate succession. Distributed learning studies have consistently shown that spaced learning (versus massed or clumped learning) leads to better memorization of and performance with both simple and complex concepts.

Our research shows earlier starts can double growth Students who begin preparation in the spring of sophomore year for a test they take in the spring of junior year or fall of senior year nearly double the growth of students who start the summer prior to or fall of senior year in preparation for a senior fall exam.

While this data represents average growth (and students follow very personalized pathways of learning), it does offer some direction: When preparing to perform well on a summative exam of grammar, reading, math, and scientific reasoning that spans multiple grades of curriculum, taking the appropriate amount of time to prepare positively impacts results.

Spacing out preparation—rather than cramming—offers the student a gradual, in-depth process of learning academic content and skills, so working memory functions more efficiently and performance stress can be managed down effectively over time.

In the end, when do I start?

We encourage students, when possible, to begin preparation in 7th grade spring and summer for high school entrance exams and 10th grade spring and summer for college entrance exams.

Students will find that their earlier starts lead to more successful academic ends.

lready a hyphenate—mother-fashion designer-art consultant-business owner, Lydia Kutko, at age 39, is building her art and fashion empire from her home base in Glencoe.

This Madison, Wisconsin native, turned New Yorker, went to the Big Apple with an art history undergraduate degree. She jumped into an Art Market Studies master’s program at the Fashion Institute of Technology, with her eye on gaining exposure to every aspect of the art world.

Her journey continued during her internship for the global “domestic doyenne”—author, entertainer, and businesswoman— Martha Stewart.

While working for America’s first self-made female billionaire was not for the faint of heart, Kutko reveled in the role, as she built sets, staged product demonstrations, and created holiday table settings.

“As I learned the basics of prop styling and beauty shots, what I appreciated first-hand is that Martha’s eye for display is impeccable, as is her ability to merchandise and sell her brand extensions,” Spencer Finch, Study for says Kutko.

When she saw a gap in the art consulting world, she fused her art education and sense of style with a set of edgy artist friends along with her jet fuel—passion—to launch an art consultancy.

“I knew how to read an artist’s CV and gauge if this was the right artist to invest in and/or love. As a natural negotiator, I prided myself on representing clients’ best interests, while being respectful to the galleries and artists we partnered with,” says Kutko.

We’ve grown to a firm that serves the major U.S. art hubs of New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles with clients everywhere in between.” Kutko opened an LK Art Consultants’ viewing room in Glencoe on May 1 and hopes it will bring exciting and relevant art and services to the community.

The formula for a residential consultation involves surveying a client’s space, developing a collection strategy, conducting viewings, and visiting art fairs across the globe. The acquisition process is a seamless collaboration with private clients and/or interior designers, with the work involving overall coordination, framing, case design, pedestal fabrication, and refinement on an ongoing basis.

look its best when installed. “That’s a skill that we use to incorporate art into a client’s home, seriously and with joy,” she notes.

In 2021, Kutko and husband, Stefan, moved with their young family to a home in East Glencoe. The move was inspired, as many are, to be closer to family. “We were ready to put down roots and felt this was the right place for us. Stefan grew up in Glencoe and having grandparents for our young children has been a welcome change for us all,” she explains.

Bringing children into your life changes everything, and with that, Kutko realized another opportunity—this time in fashion.

As Kutko explains, “The breast milk, jelly, and cooking inspired me to search for an apron or a smock. After weeks of searching, I realized I hated the idea of a smock. Why would I wear one? I needed clothes that worked for me and that looked good going to work.”

“I also needed them to feel good, look luxe, not pinch my changing waist and allow me to go in and out of my home with ease. My life was many things: I went from art fairs to dinners to the grocery and home, just as all people have many dimensions of their lives in one day.”

“I didn’t want to look like I was about to work out. I wasn’t working out. I was working hard in my career and hoping to work on myself, and so many of the young mothers I knew were doing many of those same things. And we all wanted to live our lives with a sense of the style we had always had.”

That’s when Mother Oxford came to life. “I always had a great button-up shirt, but truth be told they felt too menswear-like or too body-conscious. I needed something with great tailoring, that stood up to messes, and most importantly offered an easy, generous fit.”

“So, I grabbed my best shirt and started picking it apart. I wrote my “wish list” of attributes. I went as far as studying fashion sketching by learning how to make a croquis. It was exhilarating

and I knew I was on the right path because I was facing my fear of drawing and it felt good to challenge myself.”

Six months later, friends started to hear she had this idea. They said: “make it and we will buy it.” “It felt like a revolution. We all wanted to have practical but gorgeous performance apparel that spoke to our roles in and out of the family, as women.

Through mentorship and outreach, Lauren Hamlin makes way for more women in private equity.

W

hen Winnetka native Lauren Hamlin received her MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2014, she was one of only two women in a class of 800 graduates to go into private equity. For Hamlin, now a principal at Merit Capital Partners, the lopsided numbers had to be taken in stride as she rose to the myriad challenges of her work.

At Merit, Hamlin identifies potential investments across the country, analyzing and scrutinizing to find the best possible opportunities for the firm, serving on boards of directors at those businesses that make the cut, and then spending years working closely with management to improve and grow each company.

“I love the work,” says Hamlin. “It’s exciting to be involved in so many different industries and to strategize with the management teams to develop the initiatives that help them grow.”

But in the early years before reaching this point in her career, she confided to a close friend, “it just feels weird to be the only woman.” Hamlin’s friend’s response really stuck: “She said, ‘you know, people are going to remember you better because you aren’t just another one of the guys. You are different because you are a woman. You bring a different perspective forward.’”

Hamlin now passes these wise words on as she mentors aspiring young women and lectures and participates in business forums to increase the number of women in private equity. An analysis by Prequin, a London-based investment data company, found only 19.4 percent of private equity employees worldwide are women and within that only 11.5 percent have senior roles.

She regularly participates in panel discussions that are part of the “Women as CEOs, Investors, Directors, and Executives” classes taught by friend and associate Alyssa Rapp, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Questions posed to Hamlin in these discussions are oft-repeated: “How do you survive in such a male-dominated field?” And, “How do you manage this job not just as a woman, but also as a mother?”

Her answers don’t change, but she believes the industry will.

“There is a growing focus on having more gender balance and cultural diversity in boards and private equity firms,” says Hamlin.

“Investors are pushing for this. So things are evolving.”

But change is slow, so Hamlin’s advice to women coming into this who feel the lack of representation? “Don’t focus on it—just be the best that you can be. If you work really hard and stick with it, you will gain invaluable experience. Because you are there and you have a different perspective than some of your other male co-workers, it is a plus for you, and for your firm.”

Perhaps even more crucial, she tells them, “Turn around and help the next woman behind you. It’s so important to give back—to be a sounding board and to help each other. When I came up, there were not a lot of female role models. I wish it had been different then, but we can help make it different for the women who are coming up now.”

As the first female member of the advisory board for Invest for Kids, the Midwest investment ideas conference that raises money for Chicago children’s charities, Hamlin noted that there weren’t nearly enough women attending and speaking at the conference.

So, joined by co-chair Stacy Devine (CIO of RPTC Inc. ), she organized a Women’s Leadership Event bringing together female leaders in Chicago and top-class female speakers from around the world to network and talk about investment topics. The Women’s Leadership event is scheduled this year on June 8.

“We are doing everything we can to promote involvement by

more of the talented women who have lacked representation at the conference and in our industry. Instead of focusing on where the industry isn’t, we are focusing on what we can do to change what is,” she says.

Hamlin doesn’t gloss over the challenges of balancing her job with the dedication needed to raise two young children, Hadley, 6, and James, 4. There is a lot of required travel, and late nights can make things difficult. “But it is the same for top-level women in any industry,” says Hamlin. “If you look at senior women in banking or consulting, for example, you’ll see the same thing. It’s hard, but it’s doable.”

To get through, she says she relies on help from those in her inner circle—her husband, Jake, is her ideal partner, and her parents also live nearby. She is very intentional about the time she spends with her kids. “Whatever we are doing together, I keep the focus on them. If I go to watch them at a lesson or event, I really watch them. I’m not on my cell phone.”

Growing up in Winnetka, Hamlin showed an aptitude for math early on, followed by an interest in finance, and then a degree at Vanderbilt University.

Because Vanderbilt didn’t have an undergraduate business degree, she pursued an MBA at Booth.

She met Jake when they both worked as analysts for the same bank after college.

In addition to their shared commitment to family, they find synergies in their charity work, supporting organizations that help underprivileged youth such as the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center, where Hamlin is on the Board of Directors, as well as animal-advocacy groups.

“I’m a huge animal lover,” says Hamlin, who has dogs and horses.

Horses, in fact, have been a constant passion and stress reliever in Hamlin’s life.

“It all started with a 50-cent pony ride when I was 3,” she laughs. Riding lessons followed when Hamlin was 5, and as a skilled equestrian, she competed as a member of the Region 2 Team in the North American Young Rider Championships in 2007—the Junior Olympics.

As has been the case with her work and her family, intent focus is what makes each riding experience most fulfilling. “You have to focus a lot when your sport centers on a 1,300-pound animal with a brain—quite a bit different than a soccer ball, which I also enjoyed in high school,” Hamlin smiles. “It’s all about harmony, making sure the animal’s needs are met and you are doing the best for them.”

Looking ahead, Hamlin sees a bright future for women joining the private equity field. “There are continually more female college graduates entering the private equity arena. My advice to those women would be to pick great mentors; they will help shape your career.”

hile a student in grade school, North Shore’s Carolyn Collins read the book Nobody’s Fault? by Patricia Hermes, in which a young girl is treated by a child psychiatrist after the death of her brother.

The rest, as they say, is history. “I knew then and there that I wanted to be a therapist,” says Collins.

She later studied psychology at Indiana University, then went on to receive her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago and eventually, her post-master’s degree in art therapy from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago.

“My practicum supervisor at Loyola said I practiced like an art therapist, and I’d never heard of that,” says Collins. “I’d been working on an inpatient psychiatric unit for kids at Rush Hospital and also with adult outpatient groups, and would bring out expression creatively, like through drawing. I used art as an adjunct to get at root issues.”

After graduation, Collins pursued the art therapy discipline more closely, co-founding the nonprofit Art Therapy Connection and working in Chicago Public Schools as an art therapist for children with mental health and behavioral issues. At the same time, she was raising four kids of her own.

“I was giving a lot of my energy to others but needed to pay attention to what was in my control,” says Collins. “I became very interested in how nutrition plays a role in health and wellness, specifically in its role in mental health. I pursued my health coach certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and then created a company to merge all my knowledge.”

That company is Be Healthy Within, a wellness company that provides educational and therapeutic services including individual counseling for teens and adults, workshops, group programs, and individual health coaching. Collins’ mission is to help individuals balance their lives and improve wellness by strengthening themselves through mindful eating and healthy lifestyle choices, including therapeutic practices for conscious awareness.

Recognizing that each person holds within themselves the innate ability to know what they need for healing, Collins guides her clients toward acceptance and empowers them to make the changes they need to live happier and healthier lives. Working from a holistic perspective, she encourages her clients toward all aspects of self-care.

“I look at our physical body as our first body and where we can be in control,” explains Collins. “On intake with clients, I ask what does self-care look like for you? That means examining your nutrition, exercise, career, connections with family and friends, values, and more. It’s a holistic way of practicing psychology where we take care of ourselves bi-directionally from outside, in and inside, out.”

For those interested in starting a self-care program, Collins recommends checking in with the physical body first. Am I drinking enough water? Am I moving my body regularly?

“Each individual has different needs. It is my goal to help my clients discover what those are and to create balance in their lives,” explains Collins.

“One of my biggest missions in life is to inspire and empower people to really feel their emotions,” says Collins. “When you feel good mentally, you feel good physically and are able to show up in the world and live life with purpose.”

Most of her clients are now 18 years old and older, although she does still host workshops for teens and adolescents. Art therapy, she says, can be misinterpreted as a tactic for children, but she still uses the tool with adults in her practice today.

“Most of my clients are high-functioning and Type A,” says Collins. “If they’re really in their head, I might ask them to draw something for me. It helps to get them into the right side of their brain instead of the left, which is much more logical. This way, you can connect the entire brain and the entire body.”

Last July, Collins and her husband went on a quick trip to Michigan, staying overnight at glamping destination—The Fields of Michigan. The second she stepped onto the property, Collins knew it was where she’d one day host a wellness retreat, and she spent part of her 24 hours on-site writing an agenda for the first iteration, “The Art of Connecting.” “I spent time with my husband, too,” she jokes.

She hosted the one-day retreat last year with 13 women, who exercised, played, shared meals, explored, and connected to the environment and with each other. Collins will host another “The Art of Connecting” retreat at The Fields in September, but based on popular demand, it will be two full days of health and wellness.

“I’m going to allow more time during this fall’s retreat for internal reflection and for connection with each other. Several women attended last year who did not know anyone else, and it was really powerful to see them forge relationships,” says Collins, who also adds there will be additional activities, like a lavender farm visit or apple picking.

Before then, Collins will “walk the talk” with a four-day solo decompression visit to California, where she will write the retreat agenda and recharge her batteries. She’s also planning to soon launch an “Eat Your Greens” program whereby subscribers will receive five easy and healthy recipes each week.

“I believe in a combination of psychology and nutrition,” says Collins. “What I really want to accomplish through Be Healthy Within is to make people feel stronger and more empowered.

That would be a win.”

The brokers formed their Winnetka concierge-level @properties team a little over two years ago and haven’t stopped since.

Their mission is to consistently provide the highest level of real estate brokerage service for their clients. Both Annie and Maddie grew up on the North Shore and know and love it well. Annie lives in Winnetka where she raised

her five children. Prior to being in real estate, Annie worked in insurance and risk management, but real estate is in her blood— her mother has been in the business for forty years. Additionally, her brother is an interior designer and she’s always been drawn to that side of the business.

Maddie grew up in Evanston and currently lives in Lincoln Park. Prior to switching careers to real estate, Maddie worked for a retail clothing company and ran the wholesale part of the business.

“I was ready for a career change,” Maddie says about deciding to go into business with her aunt. “I’ve always been interested in real estate. Growing up on the North Shore, I was intrigued by all the beautiful homes. But also, I was turning thirty and this was something that I felt I could do long-term. Real estate is a career that allows you to have a balance of personal and workplace.”

Annie has worked in the real estate industry for over 14 years and has been with @properties for over two years. Even though she switched companies during the pandemic, she says her business has been stronger than ever. “I couldn’t be happier,” Annie says. She is especially appreciative of the constant support she receives from @properties management along with the technical and marketing support. “There’s always someone available to help and the systems are so much more advanced.”

Annie and Maddie have designed their business so that “one of us is always available,” Annie says. “It’s nice to have a team but more than that, we’re truly a hands-on team. I know that with many real estate teams, there’s usually the main person who may not be around a lot and all the other people are doing a lot of the work. In our case, it’s whoever is available is doing what needs to be taken care of.”

It is obvious that both Annie and Maddie are beyond grateful to be able to work together. When describing Maddie, Annie says, “I love her energy and enthusiasm. I love her positive attitude.

But also I just love the fact that if she’s frustrated or something’s not going the way she wants it, she addresses it. I think our open communication makes for a successful team.”

Maddie too says that their partnership is so important to her.

“I love that we can be collaborative. I have learned so much. It’s amazing that I can just pick up the phone and call her and ask a question about any sort of situation. There’s always something new presenting itself. Her experience is super valuable because she’s seen a lot of these scenarios before. So just being able to have her help me through different situations that come up is extremely beneficial.”

Their true strength is in their partnership. They both bring important and complementary qualities to the team. “Annie brings a ton of experience and knowledge from being in the business a long time,” Maddie says. “And I bring expertise in social media, marketing, and just bringing in fresh ideas. We have this nice synergy of Annie’s clients that are downsizing and looking to sell and I’m working with buyers who are looking to buy for the first time. So we’re working with lots of different clients, which I think makes us well-rounded.”

Cresset’s Jessica Malkin ignites Chicago with innovation and conversation.

ears ago, when Jessica Malkin read in Crain’s that TEDxMidwest, a version of TED Talks, would be presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, she knew that she needed to find a way to attend. An event that brought together industry leaders in business, technology, science, and the arts intrigued Malkin. “Back then it was really invite-only, but I was determined.” Through her networking skills and unwillingness to accept a “no” she secured a last-minute ticket that ultimately opened many doors and an unexpected future career path. Today, as Executive Managing Director & Chief Marketing Officer for Cresset, a wealth management firm and boutique family office that Malkin joined full-time in 2020, she is now at the forefront of cultivating and stewarding important conversations among global thought leaders.

“I grew up in Minneapolis in a large, blended family, so I’m used to lots of people and personalities,” laughs Malkin. She attended American University and majored in Communications and Political Science. When she moved to Chicago, her first job was in public relations at the agency GolinHarris (now Golin) then to New York-based firm Tiller, focusing on consumer, corporate, crisis work, and corporate social responsibility. The latter, in particular, was a topic often on Malkin’s mind. She regularly pitched ideas to her friend Leslie Bluhm, founder of Chicago Cares, a nonprofit volunteer organization. “She was a sounding board for me,” says Malkin of Bluhm, who at the time was looking to develop a philanthropic prize in social entrepreneurship for young adults. Malkin, in turn, suggested they reach out to Brad Keywell, co-founder of Groupon and the person behind bringing TEDxMidwest to Chicago. At that conference, he announced that he would be launching a new initiative called Chicago Ideas Week.

The model would be similar to TED Talks but would gather innovative thinkers from around the globe for a local festival of inspiring talks throughout the community. “From the moment I heard about it, I knew that I wanted to be involved,” recalls Malkin.

Soon, she was spending her lunch hours accompanying Keywell on sponsorship asks at places like NBC Universal. “It was really exciting, and I was learning a ton.” Malkin quickly became an asset to the venture. Her presence and passion helped solidify both funding and a formal position running Chicago Ideas Week with Executive Producer and Creative Director Carrie Kennedy. In 2011, she officially joined Chicago Ideas, building and running the day-to-day endeavors. “Carrie and I started with just a six-person team and were able to produce over 30 different locations in year one, hosting hundreds of speakers and delivering content to approximately 12,000 attendees.” The star-studded roster included ambassadors, authors, activists, actors, artists, and more. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, President William J. Clinton, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke, among other recognizable names and figures. Many years into building Chicago Ideas, Malkin responded to a request from Keywell to support him as Chief of Staff at Uptake, which at the time was a small startup in the predictive analytics space. Addi-

tionally, Malkin served as Co-Director of the Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation Fellowship at Chicago Ideas Week.

Today in her role at Cresset, she is honing that same talent for finding topics to spark curiosity, creativity, and positive change.

“We offer an A-to-Z concierge service for entrepreneurs, CEOs, and private family foundations,” notes Malkin. She describes Cresset’s mission as a much-needed alternative to the old traditions of building professional camaraderie through outings such as golf tournaments. Similar to Chicago Ideas, Cresset is facilitating opportunities for meaningful connectivity and discourse with other like-minded individuals. “For example, we just had a peer-to-peer session with about 12 people and investor and media personality Mark Cuban, where he offered insight into best practices,” she recalls.

In 2016, Malkin achieved the dual honors of being named a YWCA Metropolitan Chicago Hometown Hero for “Promise,” and a Crain’s Chicago Business 40 Under 40. “I like to joke that I’m constantly on a three-year plan—figuring out the next step to keep going—and I have three young daughters, so everything seems to revolve around trios in my work/life balance.” Together with her husband, Joshua Malkin, the family lives downtown. “We just moved from a house in the city to an apartment because we decided that if we were staying urban then we really should have a more proper exposure to building-dwelling,” says Malkin. True to her nature, Malkin never seems to be at a loss for scoping the market in search of new adventures.
