The Yale and Stanford alum, wife, and mother of two girls rang the NASDAQ bell in August as CEO of Healthwell. Lake Forest’s Caitlin Sarver shares her artistic journey in pursuit of a career in the digital world.

uring a digital age where many teens habitually snap endless photographs on their iPhones, Caitlin Sarver’s artistry transcends that of her peers.

The Lake Forest native, who won a digital photography award for the North Suburban Arts Conference in 2019, recalls being in middle school and photographing her friends in the forest donning flower crowns, drawing inspiration from Pinterest for the shoots.

“I’ve always planned and styled photoshoots in the backyard with friends,” says Sarver. “A lot of my early work was reflective of the impact of social media on body image and self-esteem. I wanted to pursue those issues through my photography.”

Sarver explored these themes further by experimenting with various makeup techniques on her subjects. One of her favorites was a series of a friend with white makeup accompanied with a bold red lip and popping blue eyeshadow.

“My friends go through a lot for these photoshoots,” Sarver says. “For this project, I wanted to shoot in the Lake Forest ravines in the middle of winter. Ice covered everything and I had to slide down the ravine carrying all the camera equipment.

It was freezing and I couldn’t feel my fingers after three hours; in the end, it was definitely worth it.”

The budding artist also enjoys uncovering new environments for her photographs and laughs about a time when she traveled to a mansion in Staten Island as part of her abandoned building series, which she later discovered was haunted.

She is not a one-trick pony, however. Sarver, who originally attended Parsons School of Design in New York City, was pursuing photography. “As I began taking other art classes, I realized I wanted to explore more than just photography, because I discovered how much I like creating projects with Illustrator and Photoshop,” Sarver explains.

Sarver transferred to the University of Miami and is now in her junior year pursuing a dual degree in graphic design and creative advertising.

“Last year’s spring semester, I had a project where I had to make a booklet inspired by song lyrics,” Sarver recounts. “I chose one of my favorite musicians, Tame Impala, and it took hours and hours because I didn’t have an iPad and had to draw everything out by hand ... I am really proud of that piece.”

In fact, the piece helped Sarver land an internship opportunity with JMA promotions in Chicago. An integral component of the company’s mission is to mentor and grow the next generation of music industry executives.

Each year since 2007, JMA has produced a Lollapa-

looza after-show called Nelarusky. The annual event during Lollapalooza week is held at Metro Chicago and has raised more than $400,000 for Special Olympics. Sarver was tasked to tap into her graphic design toolbox to design the promotional materials, this year headlining the artist Omar Apollo.

She also interned as part of the JMA team in their “Lollapalooza University,” a partnership between C3 Presents, JMA, and DePaul University. The program is designed to include a full festival immersion experience and a broad look at the inner workings of different areas of the music industry.

Sarver attended classes introducing her to different aspects of the music business such as festival operations, artist management, and record labels.

As for the future, the self-described perfectionist hopes to help companies in the digital age, particularly emphasizing a love for design and creative direction, now with an eye toward the music industry.

R

oslyne Smith has been painting since age five.

With a lifelong passion and talent for art, it was the only natural career choice she ever considered. A South African native, Smith first came to America in 2001 when her husband received a job transfer.

In her first week, she fell rollerblading and broke both wrists.

While assimilating to a new country, caring for two young children, and trying to recover from her accident, the attacks of September 11 happened. Smith found herself feeling depressed both at the state of the world and at her own predicament, wondering if she would ever be able to paint again.

After undergoing extensive therapy, she regained the use of her hands, relearned how to write, and turned to her art as a kind of sanctuary.

“The art became my therapy emotionally and mentally,” says Smith.

She describes her work during this time as more soulful and realistic, with an emotional yet darker feel, a direct reflection of her emotions at the time.

It wasn’t until she began redecorating her home in 2018 that her work became the bright and vibrant abstracts she is known for today. When the process began, Smith’s interior designer asked her to paint more colorful pieces with pinks that would pop to match her house.

Smith’s home is now a reflection of herself: filled with radiant colors, brilliant pops of pink, and mixes of different textures and patterns with sophisticated African antique vases and baskets incorporated throughout her modern farmhouse. And while she’s happy to create custom-commissioned paintings in more muted colors, in her own home, and in her own art, there’s not a trace of subdued pigments or dark browns and greys.

“I create my own kind of bright, cheerful, happy place,” says Smith.

She uses a variety of mediums to create her abstract paintings.

By using a mix of graphite pencils, acrylic paints, acrylic inks, oil pigment sticks, and oil paints she produces very textured canvases blending both warm and cool colors. Smith’s paintings are so textured and fluid, they make you want to reach out and touch them.

The rich textures are built from mixing her mediums and the assistance of textural gel paste—she’s even pasted beads onto canvases before to add to the visual panorama. Smith loves working in layers and is also fond of a technique called impasto, where she applies the paints very thickly, often straight out of the tubes. She insists that photographs don’t do the work full justice, you can’t see the valleys of paint and the way the lighting hits the different angles.

Smith’s paintings are all original. She doesn’t copy other works, nor does she work from photographs or still lifes.

“I let the paint guide me—it’s very expressionistic and it’s all really driven by my feelings,” she explains.

“It’s like a meditation. When I’m painting, I feel very connected to my inner and higher self.”

She often draws inspiration from beautiful and bright places. Some of her past inspiration has come from the warm South African summers of her youth, visits to her parents in Australia, and tropical Hawaiian vacations.

Some of Smith’s most personally satisfying works come from an art series she began as a way to honor her late father.

Most recently, Smith’s work was selected and accepted to be featured in a group show at the AIR Gallery this past spring. Not only were three of her paintings showcased, but one of her pieces was chosen to advertise the group exhibition featured in print and online.

Today, Smith’s works can be purchased on her website, as well as at The Guild in Lakeview, which has exclusively commissioned works. A collection of Smith’s paintings are also hung in and sold at an adult learning center in Deerfield, L’Chaim Center, where

18 percent of the profits are donated to the center. Here, Smith’s colorful abstract works filled with vibrant pops of color really bring a sense of joy and cheerfulness to an otherwise mostly grey space.

When art is shared with people, it can help make them feel something outside of themselves. And that is what she loves most, that she can share her art and help people in the process.

Smith’s art is not only her passion but it is a transformative experience. She loves the exhilarating act of taking separate pieces and mediums and going through the layers to then create something totally new with a life of its own. Each painting is a unique alchemy of colors, textures, and can evoke all kinds of reactions. Smith’s sense of fulfillment comes when seeing her beautiful kaleidoscopic paintings finished and seeing them inspire joy in others.

A

s our seaplane descended toward Niyama Private Islands, we observed two verdant oases rimmed by white beaches and floating in an infinite sea of blue. The two islands – aptly dubbed Chill and Play – are connected via a slim bridge.

“Chill” is the island of choice for guests seeking complete relaxation while “Play” is for those desiring a bit more activity. Both are easily accessible via bicycle or golf cart depending on your daily mood.

ACCOMMODATIONS Upon arrival, we met our Thakuru Wisham (aka villa butler), who escorted us to our lavish overwater villa on Chill. Our new home for the week was one of the five ultra-chic accommodations of “The Crescent” – the resort’s secluded crown jewel. Accessible via a private boardwalk, The Crescent’s five villas are often rented for large family gatherings.

Our villa was extraordinary in every way – immense is the only term that could describe the living areas, the three pools (one an infinity pool running the length of the villa), and the many decks.

Opening the massive wooden front door, we entered the foyer that unveiled a modern living space boasting a comfortable indoor seating salon, a dining area, and a full bar. The separate kitchen was stocked with a popcorn machine and every imaginable goody and libation (as if the setting wasn’t intoxicating enough). Passing through the foyer in the opposite direction, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors opened to reveal a spacious bedroom with a sumptuous bed crowned by a dramatic etched-glass work of art.

The ultra-modern bathroom matched the bedroom in size housing an enormous soaking tub, an outdoor shower, and a translucent wall overlooking two decks and the spa pool. We often found messages written on the giant mirror above the floating dual sinks—notes welcoming us to the island, bidding us farewell, and a very touching note congratulating my daughter on her straight-A marks (we received her report card while visiting and

the staff must have overheard our excitement).

Outside, we found a playground perched over the crystal-clear water. The far deck sported a staircase into the Indian Ocean allowing easy access to the warm lagoon from which we could see a distant reef rising from the ocean’s floor. Plush lounge chairs occupying the next deck and comfortable couches on the infinity pool’s veranda made for sublime sunbathing. When shade was our preference, we followed a walkway of stepping “stones” to a shallow pool. The villa’s glass walls encased the smaller pool on three sides, providing the perfect afternoon respite. Beyond the small pool which was separated from the infinity pool by the stepping stones, was another veranda with a plush round covered dais. The patio on the far end, we dubbed the “breakfast nook.” Here, shaded from the early morning sun, we dined on lavish breakfast trays.

Many mornings we awoke as the sun rose above the foggy breath of the ocean, creating a sunrise worthy of Monet. Throughout the day, we were captivated by the sweeping ocean views visible from the verandas and through the villa’s floor-to-ceiling windows. Equally as beautiful, the island sunsets filled the sky with color as the sun slipped beneath the horizon. These scenes and everything about Niyama reminded us of Mother Nature’s extensive artistic repertoire.

On our departure date, the resort offered us a beach villa for the day as our flight wasn’t until midnight. As we ran down the white beach into the aquamarine sea, we agreed the beach villa did not disappoint. Floating in the soft water, we felt buoyant and deliriously happy with the sun on our shoulders. Our open-air bathroom—completely open to the elements—proved the perfect place to rinse off the sea’s salt.

GLOBAL GASTRONOMY Niyama is a culinary destination. We dined on our patio most mornings with a few occasions at the resort’s poolside restaurant, Epicure. The breakfast menu offered an endless array of culinary treasures in a picture-perfect setting which overlooks a painter’s palette of ocean blue hues.

It was at Epicure that my husband surprised us one evening with a “Destination Dining” experience. The resort created a lit pathway to an elaborate seaside table surrounded by torches and a lantern-laden tree. Dining on fine Indian cuisine under a bright moon while sitting in a ring of fire, dipping our toes in the sand and listening to the sounds of the sea was simply magical.

Another memorable dinner was had at NEST, which offers avant-garde Asian cuisine atop Niyama’s tropical forest. Dining in the treetops surrounded by exotic birds chatting amongst themselves, we devoured sushi presented in the most imaginative ways.

The showstopper was a platter of sashimi served in an ice shell – a gravity and heat-defying triumph.

An evening at TRIBAL convinced us that we had entered the lands of the Sahara. From the Masaai warriors who greeted us to the spiced aromas floating through the air, we knew we were in

for a treat. Beneath a curved wooden dome, we feasted on heavy pots of stewed African game and hearty vegetables. The experience showered our senses with the tastes, sounds, and smells of traditional tribal cooking.

Subsix, Edge, and Edge bar occupy a dramatic compound a half kilometer out to sea and are accessible via a short boat ride from Niyama. Edge’s chefs create contemporary masterpieces showcasing the succulent seafood found in and around the Maldives. Six meters below Edge, the underwater restaurant Subsix is outfitted in aquatic-themed décor. Seated in our anemone-like chairs, seashells tinkling overhead, and our reef friends swimming to and fro just beyond the glass, we enjoyed our favorite meal of the stay. A first course of Lobster Tataki with watermelon, rhubarb, and passion fruit dressing was followed by a warm Maldivian octopus carpaccio with sweet chili dressing, squid ink crackers, and a lemon confit. My husband and daughter chose the panseared seabass with eggplant caviar, cherry tomato, spinach, and yuzu gel while I feasted upon the braised lamb shoulder with taro, red wine shallots, glazed baby vegetables, and lemon. The darling Yuzu Delight – shaped like a small delicate apple and consisting of coconut Chantilly, yuzu curd, Thai basil, white chocolate, and coconut ice cream ended the meal perfectly.

Venturing above the sea, we stopped at Edge bar a “hot” nightclub with a cocktail menu to make mixologists swoon. The club’s Edge bar & Edge restaurant

From polka dots to stripes to round bodies and pin-thin shapes, we marveled at the elaborate aquatic attire fashioned by Mother Nature.

ACTIVITIES The resort offers a myriad of activities guaranteed to burn off those delicious calories. We toured the islands daily on our villa bicycles (each bearing a plaque inscribed with our names). On our morning rides, a long-legged heron greeted us with a slow flap of his wings as he gracefully rose from beneath the boardwalk and into the air. Leaving The Crescent and following winding sand pathways, we passed powdery white beaches, a ring of overwater bungalows, beach villas, shops, tennis courts, the kids’ club, snorkeling hot spots, and endless opportunities to capture that picture-perfect moment. In the early afternoon, we often stopped at the bridge connecting Chill and Play to see the blacktip reef sharks gathered for afternoon playdates.

A favorite pastime was watching the surfers “hang ten” at Play.

Many of these wave warriors had traveled from around the world to surf Niyama’s famous waves. This fun spot sported the Surf Shack, ocean-side swings, and the best waves on the island. If you are feeling food truck vibes, the Surf Shack serves burgers, small bites, and sweets. In the early evenings, we visited for sunsets, cool sundowner cocktails, and an even cooler DJ. In hopes of hanging ten ourselves, we took surfing lessons in the blue lagoon near the Water Sports Center. On more leisurely days, we opted for glass kayaks and paddleboards as we watched thrill-seekers enjoy jet skis, parasailing, and kitesurfing.

One afternoon we jetted off in search of turtles. Our large double-decker speed boat offered a thrilling ride and glorious views of several other island resorts and the surrounding ocean. Visiting a distant reef, we donned our masks and fins and headed out Surf Shack swings on our quest. Before coming upon our first turtles, we encountered a 15-foot nocturnal nurse shark and several blacktip reef sharks.

Most days we opted to take advantage of the excellent snorkeling just a short distance from our villa. We would

SPA What better way to end our magnificent vacation than to be pampered at an overwater spa? Our visit to the Drift Spa—a paradise cocooned within a paradise—began with selecting an IV infusion of choice administering a customized blend of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. We were then guided down a peaceful sandy path to an overwater treatment room. For the next 90 minutes, our expert practitioners worked wonders. Using a combination of Hawaiian lomilomi, Japanese shiatsu, Thai traditional massage, and aroma oils, muscles were first relaxed and then revitalized. After the treatments, we practically floated back to our villa.

SERVICE Niyama’s service is impeccable. The staff strives to be on call for every wish, often anticipating a need before a word is even uttered.

Our Thakuru Wisham noticed our original itinerary would result in a long wait in Malé before our flight home. He rearranged the itinerary so we could take a speedboat to a nearby island for a later domestic flight to Malé, shortening our layover by several hours, an option I had no idea was possible. When we arrived in Malé, we were greeted by another Niyama employee who took our bags, whisked us through check-in and customs, and set us up in a lounge with dinner before our flight. Again, completely unexpected and enormously appreciated. To our dear hosts, “shukuriyaa” or Maldivian for “thank you.”

I treasure traveling with my family, often finding that escaping the everyday for adventures in foreign lands creates deep familial bonds. Whether the adventures are on a surfboard, on sand, or beneath the sea in search of hawksbill turtles, family trips are worth their weight in gold. ach fall and spring, 20 interior design influencers are selected to participate in the widely anticipated One Room Challenge, in which the chosen designers document the process of transforming a singular room while also sharing their sources and professional advice in weekly progress posts.

Anyone following along on social media is also invited to be a guest participant, flooding social media with seasonal interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement each week. Now in its 20th season, more than 5,400 rooms have been transformed to date through the One Room Challenge.

One such room is a bathroom Chicago-based interior designer Joy Williams created this spring—a design that led to Williams being selected by Better Homes & Gardens magazine home editors and One Room Challenge creator Linda Weinstein as a “featured designer” for the One Room Challenge iteration this fall.

Inspired by her travels to Morocco, Williams melded cultural influences from the African diaspora and the Mediterranean into her design.

That wasn’t always the goal, though. She had initially planned for the room to be more subdued than it is today with just a standout, electric blue shower. Instead, she had to swap out the soft gray tiles she wanted, which were delayed, for a bold geometric Fireclay tile that became the centerpiece of the space.

“I just went for it,” says Williams. “I did a diagonal stripe on the ceiling that juxtaposes with the graphic tilework and puts a finer

point on it. The black-and-white stripe reminds me of the Mediterranean, and the blue tiles feel like Greece. It’s a true mix of ancient cultures. I almost always include pops of color and cultural references in my design work.”

Williams uses her love of travel and sophisticated design to serve her clients’ design needs and believes that form and function can coexist to create beautiful and well-appointed interiors. Her full-service firm, Joyful Designs Studio, works with both residential and commercial clients nationwide.

After becoming an unintentional landlord in 2008—she had to rent her Washington, D.C. home to move back to her hometown in Chicago during the housing crisis—Williams fell into the world of interior design. She renovated that house to maximize its appeal, then invested in a few more properties once back in Chicago. Fast forward to today, and the self-taught Williams now has a robust rental portfolio, a signature design aesthetic, and a steady stream of interior design clients spanning from Chicago to D.C. to Georgia.

“What my clients always expect from me is a focus on culture and color,” says Williams. “And my spaces must function well. Designers like Kelly Wearstler elevate the interior design community with an artistic perspective, a perspective which I love. I want the homes I design to feel livable and adaptable as well. Function is key. However, I like a bit of whimsy in my design work and love to incorporate elements from my travels, African culture, and historical references.”

Williams refinished the kitchen cabinetry, added new hardware, and installed a backsplash but kept the original countertops and layout the same

Take, for example, another recent project that had Williams redesigning the former home of American composer, pianist, and jazz orchestra leader Duke Ellington for a client who wanted to transform an ancillary space into luxurious guest quarters for visiting family and friends.

“They wanted it to feel like a hotel,” explains Williams. “I researched how Duke Ellington had lived on the block and learned he’d often visit speakeasies. I interpreted that as a way to do something that felt a little more bespoke and British with tons of character.”

For the historically significant home, Williams divided the main spaces into two bedrooms, a living room, and full kitchen.

For the smaller of the two bedrooms, which connects to the living room, Williams installed a sliding barn door crafted from glass to allow natural light to pour into both spaces.

In the living room, she used a graphic wallpaper by Chicago-based Mitchell Black Wallpaper & Textiles, a Black- and women-owned wholesaler, that adds volume to the room even though there’s not an abundance of furniture. A convex mirror

by Ballard Designs, a swinging arm lamp for extra lighting, and a CB2 sofa in a custom red hue all add Williams’ signature quirk.

“The wallpaper brings the room together and highlights my maximalist tendencies,” says Williams. “The client had wanted a black sofa, but it did nothing to complement her favorite color palette of blues and grays. I knew we needed to make a statement to separate the living room.”

In the kitchen, Williams made a big impact with just a little bit of paint. She refinished the cabinetry, added new hardware, and installed a backsplash but kept the original countertops and layout the same. The result? A highly considered space that is just as beautiful as it is functional.

For the fall One Room Challenge, Williams has yet to decide between redoing a bedroom or a living room. Either way, she has her eye on a few design trends, including a return to maximalism and the emergence of bold and saturated color.

“When I think of maximalism, I think of a comfy room with lots of things that you love,” says Williams. “I think earthy colors will be big. Think tones like cinnamon, deep reds and browns, mustard, and burnt orange. I love the deep saturation of Farrow & Ball colors. The Brits have been doing this fantastically for years, of course, and now we’re seeing it stateside.”

And soon, we’ll be seeing it all come together in the latest One Room Challenge.

amed one of the “coolest entrepreneurs in America” by Inc. magazine, a notable woman in healthcare by Crain’s Chicago, and an Amazon bestselling author, Winnetka-based Alyssa Rapp is a business leader to look up to. But she credits two of the Jewish elders in her life—her late grandfather Joseph and her stepfather Daniel—for being her own entrepreneurial role models.

“My grandfather escaped the Holocaust and came to the U.S. to start selling paintbrushes door to door, then eventually bought and sold the paintbrush factory, and later made early investments in IBM that let him travel for the rest of his life,” says Rapp. “He taught me the power of resilience and to always bet on yourself. My stepfather founded East Bank Club and The Habitat Co. and is someone I look to as an example of those same themes and the responsibility to build organizations of impact that create legacies.”

As stated in their S-1 filing with the SEC, Healthwell Acquisition Corporation raised $250 million in an initial public offering as a “blank check company.” Healthwell is targeting technology-enabled businesses across the entire healthcare industry with a focus on those with enterprise values between $750 million and $1 billion.

“It felt right and exciting to do something entrepreneurial again, which a SPAC is, in many ways,” says Rapp. “Here, I could marry my experiences in Silicon Valley with those in healthcare. It’s an extraordinary time in healthcare, and I genuinely believe that technology-enabled healthcare products and services will be what change the game for clinicians and patients alike.”

Peterson Partners’ Curtis Feeny and George Horning, LLC’s George Hornig work with Rapp as SPAC board co-chairs, and the family office of Greg and Francine Purcell is a key supporter. Other Winnetkans John MacCarthy and Lauren Hamlin are also directors and investors in Healthwell, respectively.

“The SPAC process made me appreciate being an American woman,” says Rapp. “I had initial conversations about starting a SPAC at the end of 2020 and, thanks to a tremendous amount of support, was able to file an S-1 with the SEC in February 2021 and ring the NASDAQ bell after we IPO’d in August 2021.

In what other country in the world could a 42-yearold woman have an idea and nine months later IPO a shell corporation on the NASDAQ? I’m incredibly grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to work with such a tremendous group of investors, directors, advisors, team members, and to pursue my dreams.”

She’s passionate about helping others pursue their dreams, too, writing two bestselling business management books—Leadership and Life Hacks and Hacks for the New World—that have aptly been described as “the 40-Hour Workweek meets Emily Post.” Adds Rapp of her writing inspiration, “If I can spare an entrepreneur any learnings from the school of hard knocks, then I wanted to do so.”

Since 2014, Rapp has been a lecturer-in-management at her alma mater Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. And, just last year during the pandemic, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business named Rapp an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship. She currently teaches a course there on Women as CEOs, Investors, Directors, and Executives.

“So far, I have exclusively taught the course at Booth to eager MBAs, mostly women and a few secure men, too, via Zoom,” says Rapp. “Spring 2022 will be my first live experience at Booth. We look at the world’s leading companies and the wide-ranging world of business through the lens of female protagonists. It’s been a very enriching and satisfying class for students and for me personally so far.”

Rapp divides the course into case discussions and guest panelists. Thanks to Rapp, students have heard from speakers like former Playboy CEO Christie Hefner, a longtime mentor of Rapp’s; Former White House Senior Advisor and Ariel Investments board member Valerie Jarrett; and more.

“I believe in paying it forward,” says Rapp. “Mentorship is absolutely crucial for women today, particularly the next generation of women leaders. I have been profoundly impacted by mentors in my life, many of whom are involved with my SPAC today.”

Also an angel/seed investor, Rapp has even made investments in the companies started by her students or former business school classmates, like Stanford GSB classmate (and Glencoe resident) Nichole Taylor Wilson’s allergen-free healthy snack food brand, Every Body Eat. “I’m proud of making investments in wom-

en founders,” says Rapp.

Or take, for example, premium canned wine brand Maker Wine, which was started by two former students of Rapp’s at Stanford. (Once upon a time, Rapp served as the founder and CEO of Bottlenotes, Inc., the leading interactive media company in the U.S. wine, craft beer, and artisanal spirit industries.)

“They leveraged many of the trends we discussed in the class, Global Dynamics of the Wine Industry,” explains Rapp. “Of course, I had to support two great female founders and invest.”

With her wine background, Rapp loves wine tastings and sharing a glass of wine with her husband to wind down. And when she’s not running a SPAC, teaching, integrating into her newly elected role to the District 36 School Board, or being a wife and mom to her daughters, Rapp loves to run, travel, and is attempting to learn how to play golf.

Rapp does, however, hint that another book may be in her future. “We shall see,” she says. You heard it here first.

sk any female gymnast, past or present: What matters the most in a difficult balance beam routine?

“Easy,” she’d likely tell you. “Sticking your routine. It is the event that requires the most mental focus and a minor fumble can make or break your performance. It’s all about maintaining control and leveraging your flexibility with a balance of grace, strength, and power.”

Charlie Saffro, 43, learned these lessons countless times as a self-taught gymnast growing up. Without any formal training prior to high school, Saffro relied on self-discipline and diligence to “connect the dots and figure it out” before awing spectators in the Deerfield High School gym where she competed as a varsity gymnast in the 1990s.

Today?

She’s still connecting, still taking on challenges, still impressing teammates—only now she’s doing it as the highly passionate President and Founder of CS Recruiting. Saffro started the company with an office in her current hometown of Highland Park and today, Saffro and her team of 35 employees continue to thrive in a virtual office environment.

CS Recruiting, launched in 2011, is an Executive recruiting firm that specializes in the Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation industries. Saffro and her team work with manufacturers, retailers, trucking companies, warehouse service providers, and technology platforms to help organizations identify the right person for their niche hiring needs.

It is the mission of CS Recruiting to make meaningful connections to empower and inspire others to discover their full potential.

“I started the company on my own, but I never saw myself becoming a manager, so I spent the first several years working as an employee at my own firm,” says Saffro, who majored in marketing at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she met her future husband, Chad, a Highland Park High School graduate. “There are managers, and there are leaders. You can be good at one, not so good at the other. True leadership, to me, is treating people as humans. It’s that simple. I respect my colleagues and want all of them to have a voice,” Saffro explains.

“Nothing means more to me than establishing a positive culture at CS Recruiting and growing together from there. Happy people are productive people, right?”

Beth Herberholz has been happy—make that, ecstatic—since her Day One at CS Recruiting ten years ago. Herberholz rose through the ranks serving in a variety of roles before being named Vice President of the firm in 2020.

Herberholz joined the team as the company’s first employee, and as a fellow athlete, she appreciated the dichotomy of recruiting; where she could be a recognized independent contributor but also part of a growing team and something bigger. She quickly recognized the opportunity to progress her career by taking on more difficult tasks and building character through a myriad of business challenges that have shaped her into the executive she is today.

All because of Charlie Saffro.

“Charlie,” Herberholz says, “is a true connector. One of her best qualities and she has many admirable ones, is her willingness to give opportunities to others. And she fully understands her clients’ needs and cares about developing business relationships. But I’m having the ride of my life professionally because of how well Charlie connects with me and my colleagues. I’m looking at two cards on my desk, as we speak. all of us. Each has a motivational quote,” explains Herberholz.

The daughter of entrepreneurs, Saffro got her first waitressing job at the age of ... 12. Twelve! An older cousin needed Saffro to help her out at a diner in Highwood one summer day. The grade-schooler put on an apron and poured coffee for policemen and firemen on her first day.

“I got a minimal allowance as a kid, and I was okay with that,” says Saffro, who shares three sons (Madden, 14; Cameron, 12; and Jett, 10) with Chad, who now serves as an Executive Advisor to CS Recruiting. “I worked and studied and competed in gymnastics in high school. I will always be grateful for the way my parents raised me,” notes Saffro.

“Their big thing to me was, ‘You’re welcome to buy things, as long as you work to pay for them.’”

Her first major purchase cost $200. She bought a balance beam.

Saffro placed the apparatus in her basement and negotiated atop it until her feet hurt. Or until it was time to go to bed.

Remember, she had no formal training in the sport, which made her achievements and recognition as the Conference balance beam champ all the more impressive.

“I worked hard as a gymnast. I work just as hard at my job today,” says Saffro, who worked for her husband’s logistics technology company, Real Time Freight in Chicago, before forming CS Recruiting. “If you’re looking for a theme in my life, there it is. I taught myself routines in gymnastics, and I taught myself how to recruit in an industry I never imagined myself in.”

But she’s as committed to her family as she is to her company.

Balance. The other theme in Charlie Saffro’s life.

While Saffro’s career in gymnastics has been laid to rest, she gains mental clarity and physical strength through her daily yoga and meditation practice. As a mom of three, Saffro cherishes this quiet time and the guaranteed opportunity to slow down and breathe before the chaos begins.

“I’ve seen Charlie around her kids,” Herberholz says. “I’ve seen her around her friends. Her sons are her good friends, too. She’s extremely friendly and open in their presence, just like she is with us at work. She’s the cool mom.”

“T

he doctor will see you now...” Dr. Tricia Moo-Young, the 11-year highly skilled surgeon, advocate, researcher, and educator is used to not being what her patients expect when she walks into the room. This transcends her Chinese last name (her father is Chinese-Jamaican and immigrated to the U.S. before Moo-Young was born) and being an African American woman.

The “unexpected” expands to her advanced surgical training. Less than 200 surgeons around the world are currently skilled to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures like the scarless thyroid procedure, and yet Moo-Young is one of them. She has also published works in numerous medical journals and given talks on endocrine health around the globe including in Japan, Basal, and Paris.

But the surprises don’t stop there. Countless reviews written by her patients all highlight Moo-Young’s compassion. Her patients express amazement with how she ensures that they fully understand their medical condition and share in the decision-making process.

She embraces being the alternative and not the “norm” of how people think their surgeons will look and behave. With her dedication and exceptional track record, she has quickly grown to become the preferred alternative and has a busy clinical practice treating endocrine surgical patients throughout the North Shore.

Moo-Young hears time and again about her “unexpected” approach. This has fueled her drive to be an advocate for the health and wellness of her patients as well as their communities.

She feels today’s health care often forces doctors to put patients into boxes but no patient is the same to her, no matter how similar their conditions are. “The journey and the story are just as important as the problems my patients come to discuss with me,” she says.

Moo-Young strongly believes that health isn’t defined by our individual choices alone, but by multiple factors in our environment. “It is a well-established fact that a person’s zip code is more a determinant of a person’s health than their genetic code.” This statement underscores why under-resourced environments (i.e. food deserts, poor air quality, lack of green spaces) have worse health outcomes when compared to those with abundant resources. She emphasizes that taking collective accountability to strengthen communities and making resources more widely available is key to maintaining the health of all communities.

“The COVID pandemic and its many challenges are clear examples of how interconnected our health is as humans,” she says. Moo-Young believes and hopes if we maintain that same lens of equity about other aspects of our well-being as humans that the world will see a re-

duction in many other pandemics that plague our world like poverty and crime.

“The practice of Humanism in medicine has taught me how much compassion can be a powerful catalyst for healing,” Moo-Young says. Every day she is reminded when caring for her patients how simply being seen and heard can bring about a healing event that the most advanced health care can not outmatch.

By looking at the whole person and their story and the environment in which they live, instead of taking an individual just at face value, Moo-Young can better treat and serve her patients. Her gifts as an educator and her talents as a surgeon have come from hard work, dedication, and elite training. But Moo-Young believes that the best way she can use these gifts and talents is to make them available and accessible to all.

Moo-Young has found a way to make her research a real vehicle for change, in a similar way to grass-roots community outreach.

Her “humanistic” approach to care is seen several times over in her approach to medical research. She doesn’t accept a “one-size-fits-all” mentality when it comes to how patients are treated. “Minorities are often under-represented in medical research,” she says. It is because of this that she feels it is so important that standards of care are not put into place until studied in all populations and result in good outcomes for all.

Moo-Young’s passion for sharing her gifts also extends to her work globally. She has traveled on missionary trips to several parts of the globe including the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica.

She currently serves on the board of a national organization called Project Cure that collects and ships surplus health supplies to under-resourced countries.

As a mentor for young people, Moo-Young emphasizes how important it is to own one’s narrative. She embraces her differences and the “unexpectedness” of her appearance, demeanor, and unparalleled smarts. “When you walk in the room, either own who you are or you will be labeled what people believe you to be,” she says, and it is a recurring part of the advice she imparts to the hundreds of trainees she has mentored over the years.

Teaching comes naturally to Moo-Young, from her design and teaching of surgical simulation courses to speaking yearly at high school programming events aimed at increasing diversity in the health and sciences.

Moo-Young does not miss a beat when it comes to having a quick and relatable way for her patients or students to grasp the challenging health topics they are faced with understanding in the office or classroom. The walls of her office reflect such honors as “Resident Teacher of the Year” and “Highest Honors in Molecular Sciences.”

“The best thing I can give my patient is my understanding,” Moo-Young says. “My understanding of where they are coming from, what has brought them to me, and how we can get them to a better place.”

acqueline Saper’s thrilling memoir begins with the following epigraph, from the thirteenth-century Persian poet Sa’adi Shirazi.

“Human beings are like parts of the body, created from one essence. When one part is hurt and in pain, the others cannot remain in peace and quiet. If the misery of others leaves you indifferent and with no feelings of sorrow, then you cannot be called a human being.”

The lines of this poem are displayed at the entrance of the United Nations. This poem was included in President Carter’s toast to the Shah of Iran during the New Year’s Eve State Dinner in 1978 at Niavaran Palace in Tehran.

Saper’s memoir, From Miniskirt to Hijab: A Girl in Revolutionary Iran, is an award-winning, first-hand account of her experience, and that of her family’s, in Iran from the 1960s—including the revolution in 1979—through 1987, when they fled to the United States. Saper shares her riveting personal story in the book as

she witnessed events that fundamentally shaped her family’s destiny and world history.

With many memoirs about Iran, Saper’s is compelling given that it is rooted in her Jewish heritage. “The Jewish community was one-third of one percent of the population.

Although small, it was vibrant and productive. Because Iran is an Islamic nation, after the revolution, as a minority, I had a different experience than the majority had,” says Saper during a recent sunny Saturday in Wilmette.

“Second, I’m bi-cultural, which was unheard of in the Iranian Jewish community. I grew up as a bridge between the east and the west,” she explains. “Third, I experienced Iran in its three distinctive eras. A teenager in the monarchy, an adult during the revolution, and a wife and mother in the Islamic Republic.”

The pre-revolutionary Iran of her youth was secular, where Saper wore miniskirts and bellbottoms, listened to American music, and watched American television. Born to an English mother, Stella, and an Iranian father, Rahmat, she was named Jacqueline in honor of the then-first lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy.

Saper’s parents met in the late 1940s at a social dance in England held for the University of Birmingham students.

Her father was an international student in the chemical engineering department; her mother was pursuing a degree in journalism. At the end of the school term, her father

For two years, Rahmat and Stella exchanged love letters and photographs by post. The couple married in Tehran, the circumstances of which were highly unusual, given that most marriages in Iran were arranged.

Saper’s early life was one of privilege; her father was a scientist and university professor. Her mother was a self-made career woman. Their family had live-in maids who became like family and ultimately whose knowledge of Islamic traditions helped Saper survive, as did the fact that Saper is bilingual, fluent in both English and Farsi.

In the book and a related TEDx talk, Saper describes her life in fashion. “My clothes tell the story of the revolution,” she says. Following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, as dictated by the government, Saper’s wardrobe swerved dramatically from colorful western-style fashions to, as she says, “a strict version of hijab.”

For eight years, Saper covered every strand of her hair and wore loose clothing in navy, black, brown, or grey. “Morality police” roamed the streets of Tehran, confronting and arresting women who dressed improperly; They banned women from being judges; even singing, dancing, and riding a bike in public was forbidden for women. During this time, Saper married and became a mother one year later with the birth

of her daughter. Her son was born four years later.

In 1987, Saper, her husband, and children left Iran for the United States, where Saper could once again dress as she pleased. After an initial period in Houston, the family moved to the Midwest. Saper was able to obtain the college degree she was denied in Iran and became a CPA. Now her daughter is an intellectual property lawyer, and her son is an orthopedic surgeon, following in his father’s footsteps. Her two grandchildren bring Saper great joy.

As Saper says, “The joy of fashion is to make a choice.

When that choice is taken away, we lose our freedom of expression. Choosing what you wear every day is a privilege not to be taken for granted,” she concludes.

ine artist LISA KINZELBERG knew she had artistic talent in high school—when her art teacher told her parents, “She has what it takes to make it as an artist.” Even though she won a state competition for her drawing portfolio at the time, she says, “I wasn’t ready to be an artist.” Yet. She knew she needed to lay a foundation, so she went on to study at College of Wooster in Ohio and at Oxford University, earning a “well-rounded” liberal arts education in Philosophy with an emphasis on Art History. She was passionate about exploring her own philosophy that “art can show us our world.” Still, it wasn’t until her dear friend, Jessica of Jessica Margot Design told her, “Your talent is being wasted!” that Kinzelberg took the leap in 2018. She created a large-scale abstract painting for Margot’s client. “And I haven’t stopped since,” she says, “with commissions or gallery exhibitions.” Counting Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst as her artistic role models, Kinzelberg produces drawings and paintings that include large-scale abstracts, portraits, and figurative works. She intentionally interrupts lines, sculpts and composes the surface of her compositions to produce a highly evocative composition, color field, texture, and energy. Kinzelberg takes an optimistic, forward thinking, serious approach to her art, with her creative flair naturally dovetailing to her fashion sensibility.

y parents taught me by example that when an opportunity for service presents itself, you seize it, and perform to the best of your ability,” says JUDGE ELIZABETH ROCHFORD, a Lake County Judge for the past nine years. RITTANY RISTUCCI WARNER’s interest in health care began when her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. “I would frequently visit him in the hospital and I will never forget his nurse, Hazel,” Warner says. “She made him smile and laugh on his worst days, bringing such positivity to a fatal diagnosis.” That’s why Warner volunteered at Ohio State University Medical Center for several years while she was working on her undergraduate degree, and went on to earn her MBA at University of Illinois. he past year and a half have been challenging for everyone. To say that selling real estate during a global pandemic has been tough is an understatement. Today we are tipping our hats to Jena Radnay and her exceedingly positive, can-do attitude that keeps her business strong and her clients happy. Radnay met the unique challenges of COVID head-on by creating an innovative approach to her business that enabled her to achieve her best sales year ever and be named the #1 Realtor in Illinois by Chicago Magazine.

How did she manage to accomplish this? By creating a virtual platform connecting buyers and sellers in a safe environment.

In fact, it was an aha moment in the middle of a sleepless night when she came up with this concept. “I had clients who I wanted to continue helping. Literally clients in the middle of buying, selling, closing, moving and I knew there had to be a way to make the process of moving forward easier,” Radnay says. “I wanted to be proactive, not reactive. At the time there was so much fear and uncertainty, and safety had to be prioritized while still allowing life to proceed.”

Radnay was definitely ahead of the curve when she created TouchlessShowing.com which allows real-time, “live” showings to continue. She offers a variety of virtual showings where buyers are able to choose what best suits their needs and comfort level.

This includes same-day virtual showings for vacant listings, a live video walkthrough with Radnay, or a conference walkthrough for remote participants. What Radnay created through TouchlessShowing.com allows agents and buyers to safely tour a house while maintaining safety protocols. This allows both buyers and sellers to have a stress-free real estate experience. Socially distant live showings are also available with all safety precautions taken to ensure the health and comfort of all.

While Radnay has a large business, she has intentionally created it to deliver an intimate, personalized experience that makes her clients feel prioritized. “There’s a lot of hand-holding getting to that finish line. It’s not just a one-and-done process. Moving is stressful and my job is to make it less stressful.” Radnay’s clients know she is a problem solver. “I am a one-stop-shop. I manage all of the details from start to finish and I have a fantastic team helping me do it—two Millennial go-getters, Elle and Annie, who I treat as my two second daughters.”

Radnay and her team provide services for their clients that go above and beyond the typical realtor-client relationship. She owns two storage units filled with furniture and accessories, so she is always prepared to stage her clients’ homes. She also employs a team of professionals who help with everything from cleaning to making repairs and other necessary improvements. Sometimes at a moment’s notice. Radnay takes control and her clients love her for it.

Although it is clear that Radnay is exactly where she was meant

to be, her path to this career may not have always seemed so obvious. Radnay grew up in Hinsdale and graduated with a degree in nursing from Georgetown University. Although she never worked as a nurse, that training and ability to put others first is what sets her apart today. Immediately upon graduation she landed a job at DDB Worldwide, a prestigious advertising agency, and worked on the McDonald’s account. Her years in advertising ingrained the importance of marketing and she uses that knowledge today to help drive sales for her clients.

“I am a marketer. My expertise is in real estate and each home becomes a brand that I market and sell.” Her marketing plans for her clients include producing videos and taking advantage of all social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, as well as traditional media.

Radnay’s background and skill set combined with her passion to create happiness for her clients set her apart. When Radnay forms a business relationship with a new client, the most important thing she’s looking for is a partnership. “I want someone to be as excited to have me on their side as I am to be on theirs.”

Radnay is nothing if not a closer. She never leaves anything to chance. She credits this thinking and her street smarts in general to her Czech grandmother, Mary Wolf (lovingly known as Babi).

“She always told me ‘Jena, it is ultimately up to you to make sure that everything gets done right.’” It looks like heeding her grandmother’s advice has been a formula for well-deserved success.

Radnay and her family live in Winnetka and her greatest joy are her two children, Anne, 15 and Jack, 13. ynecomastia, or over-development of the male breast, is a common condition. Some studies indicate that the incidence may be as high as 25 percent. It may be the result of heredity, disease, or the use of certain drugs. For many, it begins in puberty. If the case is mild, it may disappear on its own. For more significant cases surgery is usually recommended.

Often men who are serious about conditioning and developing their bodies are frustrated that no amount of dieting or exercise will allow them to sculpt their chest. This is because there is excessive fat and/or breast tissue covering their muscle and so their efforts are futile.

Gynecomastia can cause significant emotional problems and impair one’s self-confidence. Often it causes the male to avoid situations where his chest may be exposed.

In general, gynecomastia can surgically be treated by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and or skin. More mild cases can be improved with non-invasive treatments that destroy underlying fat.

Newer techniques such as Vaser hi-definition liposuction allow one to remove larger volumes of fatty tissue thru minimal incisions and to define or sculpt the underlying pectoralis muscle. For the male that wants a truly more athletic, sculpted chiseled chest some of the fat that is removed can be prepared and injected into the muscle to give a more “buff ” appearance. Fat grafting is highly successful and the muscle feels and looks like the patient has been working out in the gym for years.

Additional procedures to either reduce the nipple or areola can often be done at the same time or as a secondary procedure.

For the male who suffers from the embarrassment of gynecomastia, this can be a life-changing procedure. For the male who wants a more chiseled chest and diet and exercise won’t get him there, this is the answer.

Varicella Most adults of this generation were vaccinated as a child with Varicella. If not, an initial 2-does series of the vaccine can be given at any adult age. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and severe immunocompromising conditions.

ith COVID-19 and its vaccine protocol at the forefront of healthcare currently, I felt it is equally important to discuss the other recommended vaccinations for adults. In our senior population treated in my practice, prevention is imperative for improved outcomes. The other vaccinations include Influenza, Tetanus, Varicella, Zoster or Shingles, and Pneumococcal.

Influenza or LAIV4 The Flu shot is familiar to most of the population. Given yearly, it is recommended for all adults. Certain allergies and medical conditions do prohibit specific adults from getting this vaccine. Immunocompromised adults, pregnant women, and those without a spleen are some of the people who are counseled against getting the Flu shot.

Tetanus or Tdap Most adults of this generation were vaccinated as a child with Tdap. An initial vaccine can be given at any adult age. Booster shots are recommended every 10 years, or when a perceived infection risk occurs and the booster history cannot be confirmed. Lower extremity wounds are common in the elderly, especially with other conditions like diabetes and peripheral neuropathy, reducing their ability to feel. Those with

Zoster or Shingles It is recommended for adults over the age of 50 and is a 2-dose series of RZV (Shingrix) 2 to 6 months apart regardless of prior herpes zoster or history of zoster vaccine live (ZVL, Zostavax). Many patients have complained of getting a small shingles infection, but most have a blunted version when having the vaccine.

Pneumococcal or PPSV23 This vaccine is recommended to adults over the age of 65. Adults should be immunocompetent. One dose of PPSV23 every 5 years is recommended. Pneumonia and respiratory illness is the most common cause of death in the senior population thus making this vaccine highly important.

QUEST FOR A CURE Susan Landau Axelrod, founder of CURE Epilepsy, hopes to ultimately see a world without epilepsy.

hat attracted Susan Landau Axelrod to a career in the health sciences was an opportunity to work on access to, and cost of, care for others. She had contemplated becoming a doctor but decided instead to pursue a business degree with a focus on healthcare. Soon, an unexpected personal issue defined for her where her professional skills should best be directed. CURE Epilepsy was founded by Axelrod and a small group of parents in 1998, to fund research to find a cure for the more than 3.4 million Americans and 65 million people worldwide who live with epilepsy. To date, the organization has raised nearly 80 million dollars and sponsored hundreds of grants around the globe.

Axelrod grew up in Hyde Park, near the University of Chicago (U of C) where her father was an endocrinologist, and her mother was Managing Editor of the journal: Perspectives in Biology and Medicine. This may have prompted Axelrod’s interest in medicine. When she graduated from Colorado College and returned to the Midwest, her first job was in the press department at the U of C before she enrolled in their MBA program. It was through an intramural, coed basketball league that she met David Axelrod, at the time a writer for the Chicago Tribune (he has since held posts as former Senior Advisor to President Obama and is currently Director of the U of C Institute of Politics). They married in 1979.

When the eldest of their three children, Lauren, was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 7 months, their lives were turned upside down. The frequency of her unrelenting seizures delayed Lauren’s overall developmental growth. There were numerous drugs, diets, and invasive surgeries, along with a lack of financial coverage, and community support. “People don’t understand the piles of bills we had from endless hospital stays on top of thousands owed in payments for sometimes up to five medications a

day,” recalls Axelrod of the long haul fight the family endured.

What she built was an organization where the resources of her knowledge, compassion, and understanding of what her daughter had been through could pay it forward. Statistics indicate that one in 26 Americans will be impacted in their lifetime, and over one-third of those affected and on medication continue to have seizures. The mother and daughter duo together made their purpose public. They were featured on the cover of Parade magazine, in Newsweek, and courageously shared their family story in the hope of eradicating the illness for future generations.

“I see myself as more of an ambassador these days,” notes Axelrod, citing the success of CURE Epilepsy’s team, research programs, and educational content that includes webinars and podcasts. Lauren has been fortunate to find a medicine that has kept her seizure-free for the past two decades. She just turned 40 and lives happily in an apartment at Misericordia Homes. “Nobody has a fuller life,” exclaims Axelrod, “Lauren works, swims, sings in a choir, and since getting her iPhone loves to send me links of stuff to buy for her.” She took up painting and her work has been prominently displayed. One such canvas depicted the White House with a Chicago skyline reflected in the fountain on the North Lawn, a gift her father proudly placed above his desk when it was next to the Oval Office.

Axelrod’s initiative to make a difference in the lives of those living with epilepsy has also influenced her sons, as both are involved with CURE Epilepsy. Ultimately, her vision is to see a world without epilepsy.
