Our October issue is a celebration of empowered women and I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for the women in the following pages for sharing their journeys, accomplishments, and aspirations with our team. I hope you’ll enjoy reading about each and every one of them.

In Country vs. Town this month, we meet Hinsdale’s Mala Thapar. This mom of two who works for the American Academy of Pediatrics and holds an MPH from Saint Louis University, shares some of her favorites in the country and on the town.

Scoreboard Charities is back with its ever popular “Uncorked: Pull a Cork for Cancer” fundraiser benefitting Camp One Step by Children’s Oncology Services and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in our Giving Back section. And despite a change in plans due to COVID-19, the nonprofit is bringing all of the fine wine, glamorous fashion, and fundraising opportunities that the event is known for to its supporters—virtually.

The 2020-2021 school year has begun, and due to COVID-19 many schools have spent the last few months working to procure enough laptops to support a digital learning environment for students. In August, two Hinsdale residents—DuPage County Board Member GREG HART and DAVID ANDALCIO, CEO of Wynndalco Enterprises—stepped in to help and arranged a $20,000 donation of 50 laptops and two mobile LAN carts to Bensenville’s Fenton Community High School. “The COVID-induced shift to remote learning is exacerbating inequality of opportunity for many students without access to sufficient technology. These challenges are often faced by students in majority-minority school districts,” explains Hart on the decision to work with Fenton Community High School. This isn’t the first time the duo has made a commitment to educational equity—Hart helped spearhead a DuPage County initiative to provide internet service at no-cost to low-income online learning students during the pandemic. Andalcio has helped provide technological needs to school systems in Chicago, New York, Dallas, and more. Here’s to starting the school year off on the right foot!

originally hails from St. Louis, Missouri, although her family moved to a farm outside Champaign, Illinois as a child. And while the mother of two—Niam (4) and Raina (2)—may have grown up in the country, she made her way back to St. Louis for her undergraduate and graduate studies at Saint Louis University. She holds a Master’s in Public Health, something which eventually led her to a career with the American Academy of Pediatrics. Thapar moved to Chicago upon graduation to join her now husband and begin her career. And although city life in River North was idyllic, Thapar and her husband, Dr. Nitin, chose to move to Hinsdale when their son was born. “We immediately fell in love with Hinsdale. The tree-lined streets, rolling hills, quaint downtown, beautiful homes, and abundance of parks quickly made it to the top of our list,” says Thapar. The family lives near Robbins Park, and when she isn’t busy at work or chasing her little ones around, Thapar is an avid runner and member of Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. Thapar shares some of her favorites around country and in town with us this month:

Mantra? Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you will look back and realize they were the big things. Best grooming tip? Wash your face and take off your makeup no matter how tired you are! Guilty pleasure? A full-bodied cab with a perfectly cooked steak. Late night pizza . Favorite foods? Sushi and chips and salsa or guacamole. Music you love? I like a little bit of everything— pop, rap, oldies, classic rock—but I’m a country girl at heart. Best advice ever given to you? Have an opinion and stick by it, even if it’s not the popular one. Best advice you’ve given? Don’t let the good stop you from pursuing the great. Earliest memory? Spending summers on our family farm with my cousins, bike rides down the country roads, playing hide and seek in the corn fields, bonfires, helping harvest the garden, and playing in the creek. It was as idyllic as it sounds! When you wake up, you? Quickly get ready for the day and hope I can squeeze in an hour of work before the

Your style is? Weekdays (pre-COVID-19): business causal the days I’m in the office. Weekends: 100 percent athleisure—we spend our days at the park or some other kid-friendly location and I always end up dirty and sticky from the kids. Can’t leave the house without? My phone, lots of snacks for the kids, and chapstick. Transportation? Lexus RX. Driving music? Moana and Frozen soundtracks are currently on repeat. Place to eat? Nabuki, Roka Akor, True Food Kitchen. Shop? I’m mostly an online shopper these days for myself but My Sister Kate has been a lifesaver for last minute birthday presents or clothes for our kids. Best thing about country? The family-centric focus and the sense of community here in Hinsdale. I grew up in a small town, so it feels like home. Worst thing about country? The trains! Also, I really wish we had a few more brunch spots. I miss that from our city-living days. The perfect day is? With family running around town, grilling out in the backyard, and having friends over in the evening for wine by the fire table.

kids wake up. Before bed, you? Catch up with my husband and unwind with a glass of wine. I also make a point to write down three things that I am thankful for from the day. What’s on your bookshelf? I have a stack of books on my nightstand that I planned to read during my maternity leave (almost two years ago). That never happened so I’m slowly making my way through them. Currently reading The Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett. I love historical fiction. You can’t live without? My husband, our kids, and my girlfriends. I’m so fortunate to have lasting friendships from every chapter of life. My husband and our children are my world, but girlfriends are good for the soul. Love to escape to? Paris will always hold a special place in our hearts. Hopefully we can return one day soon. Favorite driveable locations include The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin and Saugatuck, Michigan. Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t be afraid of change. You may lose something good, but you may gain something better.

Your style is? Classic and tailored. Can’t leave the house without? My phone and lipstick. Transportation? Uber into the city then walk as much as possible. Driving music? The Weeknd and Drake. Place to eat? Maple and Ash. We also go to Spiaggia each year to celebrate my birthday. And Sweetgreen—we lived across the street and quickly became addicted. Wish we had one in Hinsdale! Shop? Oak Street. Best thing about town? Runs along the lakeshore path. Worst thing about town? Never ending construction. The perfect day is? Brunch at The Peninsula, shopping, drinks at Pops for Champagne, and dinner at one of our favorite steakhouses.

Scoreboard Charities takes its popular annual “Pull a Cork for Cancer” cancer fundraiser online. Get ready to enjoy wine, fashion, and shopping for a cause on November 6.

While the world’s attention has been focused on the recent pandemic and the race to find a cure for COVID-19 this year, another fight continues on the home front to help find a cure for cancer and help kids live through their own cancer battles with dignity and hope.

The Scoreboard Charities nonprofit was founded by Hinsdale resident Rick Heinz, who lost his mother to cancer more than 25 years ago. Combining his longtime affinity for sports collecting with a mission of helping others overcome their battles with cancer—including children who are living with the disease—the charity set on a mission to raise funds and raise awareness at the same

time. Through Scoreboard Charities, people are able to donate sports memorabilia to be sold, with proceeds benefiting nonprofit organizations that support the fight against cancer.

Four years ago, Heinz and his supporters elevated that concept to host what immediately became a beloved annual fall fundraiser. For the first two years it was known as “Wine, Women & Shoes®” but the event evolved last year (keeping all the same fun, food, and fashion ingredients) into “Uncorked: Pull a Cork for Cancer.” Proceeds from the event benefitted Camp One Step by Children’s Oncology Services and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, bringing Scoreboard’s three-year fundraising tally to $565,000.

The plan was to do it all again this year, following a similar

wine, shopping, raffles, musical entertainment, and auction format. Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened, and while the funding need is greater than ever, the logistics of hosting such an event seemed almost impossible.

However, as Scoreboard Charities and its team of volunteers are about to prove, unprecedented times call for unprecedented ingenuity.

“Scoreboard Charities considered many ways to continue its mission this year and decided that a virtual event would allow us to keep attendees safe and still deliver an exciting evening,” explains co-chair Karen Mincheff of Oak Brook. “Our event will still have our foundational elements—fashion, tastings, and Keys to the Closet, but rather than a group event, attendees will participate from the comfort of their home—or perhaps in a ‘pod’ at the home of a friend.”

“Uncorked: Pull a Cork for Cancer” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 6—offering a unique opportunity for each attendee to literally create the environment in which they would like to participate.

Mincheff and her committee spent many hours designing an evening that will be entertaining but also leave you with a glow at the end of the evening, knowing that you have supported two very important causes—Camp One Step by Children’s Oncology Services and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“As much as the pandemic has changed our lives, it has not lessened the needs of these two wonderful programs. The need remains constant,” she adds. “As our world shrinks, Uncorked still provides an opportunity to celebrate the gift of friendships, resilience, and generosity.”

Even though the event will be completely virtual, it still promises some of its signature features, including luscious wines, glamorous fashion, an incredible live auction, and a chance to win “keys” to a $10,000 dream closet provided by honorary chair Sweet William—the auction’s largest raffle item.

SavWay Fine Wine and Spirits in Hinsdale will be the wine vendor this year. Each ticket sold will include a swag bag with a bottle of wine, wine glass, and other goodies. Mincheff says the committee’s volunteer “pour guys” will deliver the bags to the respective houses a day or two prior to the event. Participants will be given the passwords and links to the website for the evening. As always, 100 percent of every dollar raised from this privately sponsored event will go to Camp One Step and the Lurie Center.

“This year is especially tough for charities and cancer research because there is a very limited ability to host the annual fundraising events that would normally take place. Scoreboard Charities is working around our current limitations to do what we can to raise money because we know that doing something is going to be far

more impactful than doing nothing,” says Uncorked Marketplace Chair Kelly Hiser of Schaumburg. “Even though the pandemic has put our world on hold, kids are still getting diagnosed with cancer every day and that will not stop.”

Hiser and her husband have been heavily involved with Scoreboard Charities over the years, sitting on the board of directors and volunteering their time at various charity events that benefit the nonprofit.

“I started volunteering at the golf events, selling raffle tickets to the attendees and have had the pleasure of getting to know a number of people involved, who selflessly donate their time, money, and energy to support this amazing charity,” says Hiser, who is serving on the board for a second year. “Donations are more important than ever because they enable cancer programs to strengthen and expand, which benefits countless patients and their families. Also, with all of the negativity surrounding this year, it feels so good to be able to give back.”

The two beneficiaries this year are worthy ones. The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University is dedicated to scientific discovery, advancing medical knowledge, providing compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care, and training the next generation of clinicians and scientists. Camp One Step operates camp programs that give children who’ve been diagnosed with cancer a chance to meet and bond with other pediatric cancer patients and survivors in a non-hospital setting and find a community that offers one another support, hope, strength, and understanding through shared experiences.

Hiser says she had the opportunity to witness the healing power of Camp One Step in Lake Geneva last year.

“Pulling up to the camp and watching all of the kids running and playing, you would never know the struggles they face on a daily basis trying to beat cancer because they are so happy and truly living in the moment,” she says, adding: “It’s so priceless to see. I have been so grateful to witness the profound impact of the money raised and just how much it helps these kids feel like kids again.”

Even though the event will look and feel a little different this year, she and the other organizers encourage everyone to log on, pop some corks, and virtually support Scoreboard Charities on its mission to find a cure for cancer.

“We want people to know that giving back in any way is so appreciated, whether it is money, time, prayers, or sharing social media posts,” Hiser explains. “Together we can all contribute in the fight against cancer!”

Everyone has a light bulb moment, that turning point where the path you were intended to take becomes crystal clear. For DR. MEAGHAN BOSTON DALY, a concierge internal medicine doctor with Harper Health, it was during her teen years growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “I was a young high school student volunteering in the cardiac cath lab, still trying to decide if I wanted to become a doctor one day,” she says. “The patient that we were treating went into cardiac arrest and the staff sprang quickly and efficiently into action. When LESLIE BOWMAN was a little girl, she used to “build” homes out of shoe boxes covered with magazine cuttings of beautiful rooms. “I used to dream of one day making those shoe boxes a reality but when it came time to go to college, I decided to study accounting because at that time, I was told that women could not be architects,” says Bowman, who earned a BS in Accounting and became a CPA before finally pursuing her dream. Her path took her into the real estate development industry as a CFO, one that shifted dramatically when she found herself going through a divorce with three small children (under the age of 6). “Getting divorced while they were so young was difficult but unwittingly provided in me a sense of confidence that is still with me to this day. Burr Ridge resident Tiffany Cruickshank, founder of Peak Running, LLC., and long-time runner, says she is grateful for the support her business received at the height of the pandemic—a time when she and her team reinvented the concept of what they do in new and unique ways.

It’s not easy being a small business owner, and the challenges are sometimes even greater when you’re a woman small business owner. Add to those rigors the unprecedented obstacles presented to all local businesses this year when COVID-19 resulted in shutdowns across the Chicago area and for many, it felt like the odds were stacked against them.

Burr Ridge resident Tiffany Cruickshank is a mother of four and founder of Peak Running, a local business that outfits runners and walkers with all the gear they need to get where they are going in comfort and style. She says that at a time when many businesses were struggling, her loyal customers helped the company reinvent its service in new and interesting ways.

“As a woman business owner, it’s fun to be able to really see the community get behind you,” says Cruickshank. “I felt completely supported during the pandemic with everybody calling to order shoes for delivery. It was a really neat experience to have so much support during these tough times.”

Peak Running, with locations in Downers Grove and La Grange and its popular Peak Running With a Twist (where craft brew meets running gear) in Burr Ridge immediately began to think of ways they could still provide core services remotely when the pandemic struck.

“In the blink of an eye, almost overnight, had to reinvent the business,” Cruickshank explains.

Delivering shoes and apparel was not the issue. But how do you measure a customer for walking or running shoes on Zoom, in order to ensure they receive great service and the right product?

“We instantly decided to offer virtual shoe fittings, where we were still able to have that really detailed and focused interaction, but making it safe for everybody,” says Cruickshank, who started the business six years ago and has continued to expand to new locations, customer engagement concepts and brands such as Brooks, On, Hoka, Alo, Rabbit, and Lululemon. “I was doing door-stop deliveries and virtual fittings on an hourly basis, and then we had to create an online platform to provide an e-commerce experience. It happened quickly but all of those things really enhanced our reputation and helped us be able to continue to do what we are known for in the community.”

One trend she noticed was that with everyone stuck at

home and not commuting, life on pause gave people more time to run and walk and be outside.

“I am seeing a real uptick in new runners and walkers,” she says, explaining that for many of these first timers, discovering how important a well-fitted shoe can be transformational. “A lot of these new people are intimidated when they see the sign, Peak Running. They might say “I don’t run; I just jog’ or “I’m just a walker.’ We can explain exactly why a properly fitted pair of shoes can enhance whatever you are doing.”

Unless you are serious about running, Cruickshank says most people don’t think about getting fitted for a pair of running or walking shoes.

“We take several different measurements of the foot, so it works properly with the shoe. The flex points of the shoe are designed to flex and bend where your foot bends,” she says. “We also take a look at the shape of the leg and the gait or if they had any previous injuries, which helps us provide shoes for our customers that are designed to keep them feeling great and moving.”

In addition to her regular tribe of avid runners in the community, COVID-19 has prompted walkers to get more serious about their activity of choice. “I have people come in and saying that they are walking five to six miles per day now,” she says, adding: “We’ve had a huge increase in walking clients. I’m an avid runner, but I found a new love for walking as well.”

While she loves to watch people moving more and being more active, Cruickshank always tries to advocate for the necessary self-care that goes with it—including massage and other measures to make sure they are taking care of their whole body.

“It’s really nice to see so many people out walking or running in this current environment,” she says. “People are so unsettled right now for so many different reasons. When people come into Peak Running, we want to take some of that stress away.”

Now that Illinois is in Phase 4 of the recovery plan, Peak Running stores are open with enhanced safety protocols.

“It’s very safe and we’re wearing masks,” she says. “People are still getting a thorough fitting service, whether in person or online, and we’ve had some really meaningful interactions with our customers.”

While the pandemic is far from over, Cruickshank is comforted in the fact that her community has her back, and that she and her team have been able to not only weather the storm but innovate new services that are likely to remain long-term.

“It’s been a wild ride, but we have definitely made the best of every moment,” she says.

This year’s runway show was pre-taped with the help of Kehoe Designs, Black Oak Productions, and Zzazz Productions. Although the full event was virtual this year, a small group of members—dressed in spectacular summer fashions—gathered for a socially distant viewing party. Popcorn Popup Drive-In

Burr Ridge Village Center hosted its popular monthly movie series—Popcorn Popup DriveIn—throughout the summer this year; offering family-friendly fun in a socially distant environment. Viewers gathered on August 5 for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Lady and the Tramp on September 2. The series, which has been selling out monthly, is part of the shopping center’s Pop Local pop-up experiences program. Home is where the heart is.

It’s a phrase that has been used for countless years, but takes on quite a different meaning these days. In recent months, our homes are also where we are doing everything from working to teaching to cooking.

In short, home is more important than ever.

And that’s where Cedar Roofing Company comes in.

“One of the things we are trying to do these days is help our customers make sure that their home is a safe haven for them,” explains Jennifer Makely of Lake Forest-based Cedar Roofing Company. “We want to make sure that each of our customer’s homes are warm and dry, and most of all, it protects them in every way possible. And while the fall season traditionally means a bit of a slowdown from the frantic nature of their business during the warm months, Makely says many of their customers, this year in particular, are planning projects right through the winter to ensure that their home is protected and safe from the elements.

“Quite honestly, as long as the weather cooperates, we roof all year long,” explains Makely. “The winter months can actually be a great time to invest in a new roof if that’s something you need. You can really get a good deal and the schedule opens up a bit.”

Even if a completely new roof isn’t in the budget right now, Cedar Roofing Company still encourages its customers to be proactive when it comes to their roofs, especially when faced with yet another cold winter.

“Everyone knows that replacing a roof is very expensive, but having us out to do some simple repairs or some maintenance, which cedar does need, will save you a lot of money in the long run,” says Makely. “It may seem like a small thing now, but if you let it go, it can turn into thousands of dollars.”

TREATING THE SOUL OF IT ALL

Dr. Ashley Lee joins Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists in Hinsdale.

Dr. Ashley Lee always knew she wanted to work in medicine.

Even in high school, the strong woman with the big dreams shadowed a variety of physicians working in everything from dentistry to veterinary studies. But after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Lee made the move to Chicago. And, her life changed forevermore.

“I found a home in podiatry and never looked back,” says Dr. Lee, who completed her four years of medical training at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science followed by a 3-year foot and ankle surgical residency at Jesse Brown VA and Weiss Memorial Hospital. “In this field, I get just as much satisfaction treating patients conservatively as I do being able to help them surgically. It was the perfect fit for me.”

After spending 10 years in private practice in Arlington Heights and serving as the Chief of Podiatric Surgery at Northwest Community Hospital, Dr. Lee joined the accomplished staff at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists in Hinsdale and has already felt the warmth of the area’s close-knit community.

“I haven’t ever lived close enough to see my patients out and about in the community, but now I can,” exclaims Dr. Lee, who has resided in Western Springs for the past three years. “There has always been such a small town feel here, and because of that, I really get to know my patients, in and out of my office.”

Indeed, throughout her career, Dr. Lee’s gracious nature paired with an insurmountable amount of knowledge within the field she excels in has served as quite the blessing to her growing patient base.

“I spend a lot of time explaining things to my patients the way I would want things explained to me,” says Dr. Lee, who is double board-certified with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons in foot surgery as well as ankle and foot reconstruction surgery. “I get to know them and their goals and aspirations. We then work together to customize each treatment plan to everyone’s unique situation.”

And perhaps, never have we collectively found ourselves in a more unique situation as we are now, as the remnants of the pandemic continue to play a role in all of our lives, including Dr.

Lee’s patients.

“I have seen adults working out more and working out outside, which sometimes brings with it new injuries,” says Dr. Lee. “I have also seen others working out indoors, barefooted on wood floors, which can cause a multitude of problems. Luckily, the people that I have been treating here really want to take care of themselves. They are very motivated, which makes my job that much more rewarding.”

But there are far more reasons why Dr. Lee is loving working and living close to Hinsdale.

Actually, two specific reasons.

“Being five minutes from my 5-year-old and 7-year-old boys was an opportunity I couldn’t give up,” concludes Dr. Lee. “The world is changing. Why not make a change for myself?”

DEPRESSION AND THE ELDERLY

Geriatric depression is when normal feelings of sadness and occasional feeling “blue” persist. Research suggests various causes of depression in the elderly, including low levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, strong family history of depression, medical illnesses, and/or traumatic life events. In the elderly population, medical illnesses are a common trigger for depression. Some of these include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, stroke, and various dementias.

Symptoms of depression include sadness, feelings of worthlessness, irritability, fatigue, crying spells, apathy, restlessness, lack of concentration, withdrawal, sleep problems, changes in appetite, thoughts of suicide, and physical aches and pains. Often otherwise unexplained symptoms could be from undiagnosed and/or untreated depression.

One important sign of depression with seniors is when they withdraw from their regular social activities. Rather than explaining their symptoms as a medical illness, often depressed seniors will give different explanations such as: “It’s too much trouble,” “I don’t feel well enough,” or “I don’t have the energy.”

There are various treatment options to treat depression. This includes therapy, biofeedback, medications, and procedures like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). For seniors, medications are the most

common type of treatment. Medications include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), bupropion, and mirtazapine.

A frequent reason some seniors do not respond to antidepressant treatment is because they don’t take the medication properly. Sometimes the elderly get confused and miss doses or taking more than the prescribed amount of the medication which can compromise the effectiveness of the antidepressant.

Usually, antidepressant medication is taken for at least six months to a year. Typically, it takes four to 12 weeks to begin seeing results. Stopping the medication too soon often results in a relapse of depression. In fact, most patients who stop taking their medication before four to six months after recovery will experience a relapse.

Families interacting with their elderly loved ones can give vital information to healthcare providers about their mood and behavior. This helps physicians and nursing staff better understand the patient, allowing for more efficient diagnosis and treatment. If you suspect your family member having depression, please seek out medical attention with your trusted healthcare provider.

Last workout class you created that inspired you to get creative?

My friends and family can attest to the fact that every class I choreograph and create comes from some real-life event that has inspired me for the week. Right now, I’m all about Fall Renewal. We are in the process of turning our garage into a home yoga studio!

Last philanthropic event you’ve had the opportunity to participate in?

I am privileged to have been asked to teach introductory yoga classes for CASE, an early childhood collaborative, empowering children and families to reach their greatest potential.

Last student who inspired you?

My dearest friend and yoga client of 8 years, Christine McCarty, is undoubtedly the most inspiring and strong woman I’ve ever met. She makes being smart, kind, passionate, and ubertalented as both a CMO of a major company and her household look like a total breeze. Plus, she’s my right-hand woman, on—our yoga mats—and off, and I truly don’t know what I’d do without her guidance and support.

Last family trip that you’ll cherish for a long time?

Our entire family—my parents, sister, and her family—went to Greece for an entire month last summer! Not only was it a trip of a lifetime, it was our last family trip before COVID-19, which makes it that much more memorable.

Last song or book that inspired you?

Born to Run by Christopher McDougall is one of my favorite inspiring books, because I love to run almost as much as I love yoga! Through the stories of his characters, Christopher McDougall teaches that long distance running is more about cooperation, camaraderie, and caring than about competition. Isn’t that an all-around great life lesson?
