larence “Gene”Myers,76,does not talk about his service in Vietnam, not to an interviewer, not to his family, not even to the other friends and fellow veterans with whom he golfs. “We mostly talk about golf and family,” he says with a laugh. On October 6, Meyers will be among 22 WWII, Korean and Vietnam War vets traveling to Washington D.C. courtesy of Lake County Honor Flight. The all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization raises funds that make these trips possible. In the nation’s capital, the veterans will be escorted and feted over the course of their three-day visit to see military monuments and memorials that honor all veterans’ service and sacrifices. here’s a bit of local history in every pint poured at Macushla Brewing Company, a new microbrewery recently opened by husband and wife team Megan and Mike Welch next to Hackney’s on Lake in Glenview. Mike Welch, the grandson of Hackney’s restaurant founders Jim and Marcella “Kitz” Masterson, spent a significant chunk of his childhood bussing tables, washing dishes, and listening to family stories dating back nearly 80 years, to when his newlywed grandparents, aged 21, purchased Hackney’s on Harms from Mike’s great aunt and uncle, Jack and Bebe Hackney, who made a business selling hamburgers and beer off their back porch during Prohibition. “I grew up hearing about that whole era,” said Welch. “Al Capone, hoodlums, gambling…it all happened there.” Hackney’s on Harms was the first acquisition in what would grow to become a chain of four family owned restaurants, including Hackney’s on Lake, Hackney’s in Palos Park, and Hackney’s in Lake Zurich.

Two years ago, after a 15-year stint working at the Chicago Board of Trade, Mike returned to Glenview with wife Megan and pitched his relatives on the idea of opening a small craft brewery inside what had always been the Hackney’s laundry facility: a small outbuilding next to Hackney’s on Lake where every tablecloth, apron and napkin from the Mastersons’ restaurants came to be washed, dried and ironed. “I’d been a home brewer for 10 years, which gave me the idea,” said

Mike. “When I made beer and shared it with friends, it always got good reviews.” After receiving an enthusiastic nod from their family, the Welches set about transforming the cinderblock building into the 34-seat Macushla Brewing Company, officially opened on September 15th with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Now, a 48-seat beer garden featuring long communal tables greets guests as they enter Macushla’s via the Hackney’s on Lake parking lot. Inside, soft pendant lights illumi-

nate the brewery’s rustic wooden tables and plush leather bar stools. Tall silver brewing vats now stand where the old commercial washing machines churned daily for more than six decades, a mere 50 feet from the entrance to Hackney’s kitchen. “It’s a business that’s mutually beneficial,” said Mike, of his arrangement with Hackney’s on Lake to serve their food at the brewery. “We take orders at our bar and call them in, and they feature our beer on the Hackney’s

menu.” At opening time, Macushla’s was brewing eight craft beers, with room to expand to 12 selections in the future. Of that grouping, Welch and his head brewer, Eric Plata, plan to designate four taps for year-round beers, and the remaining eight for seasonal offerings. On this trip, he said, he looks forward to seeing not only the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, but all of the memorials as an expression of his appreciation for his brethren from other wars. “I’ve seen the traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial,”he said. “I found my captain’s name on the wall.” Myers, who lives in Beach Park, Lake County, joined the Marine Corp.in 1959 and served until 1983. He received several commendations, including a Presidential Unit Citation, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame. He was in Vietnam in 1965 and came home in 1968, when anti-war sentiment in America was rising and there were protests across the country. “When we were getting ready to fly back to our homes,we weren’t allowed to wear our uniforms,” he said. “We had to change into civilian clothes.” “It didn’t really bother me much,” he adds. The Honor Flight trips are a way to honor and show appreciation for this country’s veterans, said Paula Carballido,president of Lake County Honor Flight,which she founded in 2013. As the former president of the Exchange Club of North Chicago, she had come up with a similar concept after befriending Frank Wortham, a member of the World War II Black Navy Veterans of Great

Lakes, which was responsible for erecting a memorial in North Chicago to the first 13 African American Navy officers. In addition to volunteer work,the two had in common that neither had ever visited Washington, D.C. In 2011,while passing out Thanksgiving dinners at a church, they discussed the recently unveiled Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and thought it would be a good idea to see it. Wortham suggested they ask other vets to join them, and five others signed up; two who served in WWII, two in Vietnam, one from the Gulf War, and one from the Korean War. Honor Flight is a national organization that focuses its efforts on WWII veterans, of which an estimated 640 die each day. Highland Park resident Rachel Schulman, along with her brother and sister, traveled to Washington,D.C.to join

her father, David Reagler, then 88, when he accompanied an Arkansas Honor Flight hub. It would be his last trip before he passed away,Schulman said. Her father served in the 99th Division, Infantry Company, 394th Regiment, and was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.Though his 2013 trip coincided with the government shutdown that resulted in some of the monuments having to be scrapped from the itinerary, he did get to visit the World War II memorial. “It was his last hurrah,” she said. “From the time the plane landed and they were greeted with a band to the time it took off (to return home), the veterans were made to feel honored and special. Contrary to popular belief, they say it’s polyunsaturated fats like safflower oil and soybean oil, as well as trans fats such as hydrogenated palm, soybean and cottonseed oil that should be avoided. Saturated fats like coconut oil, palm kernel oil, beef fat, and butter are actually good if consumed in moderation.

“If you’re going to eat a French fry,” said Gore, “you’d be much better cooking it in coconut oil than vegetable oil.” The pair explained that polyunsaturated fats are unstable and therefore vulnerable to oxidation - whereby oxygen present in other food molecules, the air, or the cooking process renders the fat rancid. Scientists believe this oxidation is linked to heart disease, cancer, and aging. “Oxidized fats are bad fats,” said Gore. Meanwhile, saturated fats, once thought to be unhealthy, have been linked to weight loss, cancer prevention, and inflammation reduction. Both Gore and Bogaard see patients regularly at The Center for Holistic Medicine, where Gore is a co-founder and medical director. he football coaches at Glenbrook North have come up with a novel idea, and it figures to stick. There’s a good chance that this novelty — playing “rookie” Chris Heywood at quarterback — will not wear off any time soon. By the look of things, the Spartans have their own version of The Say ‘Hey’ Kid. It just so happens that Heywood, a baseball pitcher and outfielder when he’s not tossing around the pigskin, possesses mounds and mounds of gridiron talent. Oh, the possibilities. A transfer from Loyola Academy this fall, the sturdy 5-foot-10, 210-pound Heywood has done a lot in a short time with the Spartans. You know, he’s just your typical defensive back/running back/receiver/punter/punt returner/ placekicker. Try to fit that on a business card. And now … this. Heywood’s latest innovation went into effect, when senior quarterback Burke Morley sustained a concussion in a Week Two 24-14 win over visiting Grant. It looks like the highly athletic and creative Heywood has staying power. He’s got that dual-threat thing going. “It became a situation where we were looking for a quarterback who could run the ball,” said Glenbrook North’s inventive offensive coordinator, Dom Savino. “And we feel like he’s a good fit with what we want to do offensively. He can gain yardage in a number of ways: lowering his shoulder, making people miss and using his speed. “We’ll see where this takes us,” Savino added. Thus, Heywood was rushed into the QB position in the team’s Week Three 34-24 win over visiting Elk Grove. And he was out there again in GBN’s 26-14 setback to host Schaumburg on Sept. 15. Experience … not necessarily necessary. Entering the Elk Grove game No. 28 had never taken a snap from center. None. Zero. “I’ve always been a running

back and a safety,” said Heywood, one of nine children — all athletes — in the Heywood household. But he was more than willing to break out of his comfort zone. He’s still getting the playbook down; still figuring out the passing routes and blocking schemes. “He practiced the position three days last week and three days this week,” said GBN head coach Bob Pieper. “He’s done everything we’ve asked. “The more he grasps the offense the better we will be,” the head coach added. Heywood showed flashes in the game at Schaumburg. In GBN’s second series of the night, he showed his dangerous side. He gave the Saxons’ defensive unit pause, when he faked a handoff to Jimmy Karfis and ripped off a 31-yard gain up the middle on a zone read. “Having Jimmy back there with

me keeps defenses on their toes,” said Heywood. “He’s capable of breaking off a 60-yarder at any time.” And then, Heywood did some nice quarterback things. First, he completed a 10-yard sideline pass to Davu Keels on 4th-and-6. “Davu has crazy-good hands,” said Heywood. “You just have to get the ball somewhere near him, and he’ll make every effort to come down with it.” More Davu, please. Three plays later, the HeywoodKeels show continued, when the two playmakers collaborated on a 12-yard first-down pass on 3rdand-8. Heywood then capped off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak. “That drive helped our offensive line settle in,” said Heywood, referring to center Ryan Purdy, guards Nick Mantas and Louis

Schaller and tackles Nicolas Cardenas and Dean Mantas. “It gave the O-line confidence.” GBN’s final series of the first half was part substance, part style. Thanks to an 18-yard carry by Karfis, an 11-yard run by Heywood and a 21-yard reception by Ethan Quayle on a crossing pattern, GBN went from its own nine-yard line to the Schaumburg 37 in swift fashion (5 plays). And then … this happened. Gimmickry in motion. Karfis the running back turned into Karfis the quarterback. Full disclosure: When the play call came in, Karfis had his doubts. Uh-oh. “When I heard it, I thought, ‘Well, let’s just see how this goes,’ ” said the Glenbrook North running back. How about … unbelievably well? On a 1st-and-10 call, the Spar-

tans did something bold, daring and delectable. Karfis took a handoff from Heywood, faked a run and flipped a short pass to Heywood. And … voila. So much for uncertainty. Heywood took it to the house. He busted a tackle, got blowout blocks from Cardenas and Andrew Koulogeorge, and then high-horsed it down the left sideline. “That’s something that Coach Pieper wanted to run,” Savino said. “We put the ball into the hands of our two best athletes. Things don’t always work out the way you draw it up. But sometimes, it does. Those guys obviously rose to the occasion.” “We always have some stuff in our bag of tricks,” said Pieper. Heywood’s TD catch and Andrew Pollina’s PAT kick gave the Spartans (3-1) a 14-13 half-

time lead. But GBN was unable to build on that momentum after intermission. The Saxons (3-1) instead got the spark they needed, when Hez Trotter returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown with 5:56 left in the third quarter. One series later, elusive running back Jordan Salgado gave Schaumburg a 12-point cushion, 26-14. “The first and third quarters were not good quarters for us,” said Pieper. “We’ve got to be able to put a full game together. “But, everything we did wrong tonight can be fixed,” he added. In the meantime, the Pieper and Savino believe that Heywood will continue to master the intricacies and nuances of the quarterback position. This much is for sure. He’s got the arm for the position. Last spring, Heywood was a member of the Loyola pitching staff. In 23 innings of work, he went 2-2 with a 3.04 earned run average. Being able to paint the corner no doubt was one of his selling points. “I think that was part of it,” said Heywood. “That was to my advantage.” Heywood finished the Schaumburg game with 228 yards of offense: 20 rushes for 51 yards, 9-15-1 passing for 140 yards and 1 reception for 37 yards. “I think he’s transitioned to the position pretty well,” said Savino. Notable: Jimmy Karfis was GBN’s leading rusher against Schaumburg (23-57). The senior also caught two passes for 47 yards. Davu Keels (5-58) and Ethan Quayle (2-54) were the leading receivers. The defensive leaders were Landon Abboud (10 tackles, 1 tackle for loss), Quinn Sybert (8 tackles), Skyler Metzger (6 tackles), Jayk Rosinski (5 tackles), Michael Weingardt (5 tackles) and Dane Spengel (5 tackles, 1 TFL). … Parting shot: It’s a safe bet that Conan O’Brien is the choice for late-night talk shows in the Heywood home. While growing up on the East Coast, John Heywood (Chris’ dad) and O’Brien were childhood friends.

ou see the angelic look — in a postgame interview. It ’s not there, when it ’s game on. Gabriel Diculescu (pronounced: di-koo-less-koo) enters an 80-minute soccer game locked, loaded and unapologetically riled up. “He’s our pit bull in the midd le,” says Glenbrook South first-year head coach Reggie Lara. “ Teammates compliment him all the time,” the coach adds. “The smallest guy on our team has the biggest presence.” The 5-foot-5 Diculescu loves hearing that. His thought: Play with purpose or don’t play at all. “I try to bring an aggressive tone to the game,” says Diculescu, a perfect fit at defensive midfielder. “I like being aggressive. I like taking on the role of destroyer.” Contact with bigger players doesn’t faze him much. Being a former MMA (mixed martial arts) athlete — for nearly eight years — certainly helps him in that area. He’s ready for combat. “He’s a physical player,” notes GBS goalkeeper Michael Hatfield. “He’ll put a body into anyone. “He helps me out. He helps out our backs,” the goalie adds. “He’s real good at either stopping or slowing down the other team’s attack.” That tough-guy image pretty much disappears, when the soccer cleats are off. Diculescu flashed a smile when talking about his roots. Born in Alicante, a gorgeous seaside city in Spain, his family moved to Northbrook when he was 14 years old. His mother is Claudia. She is the one who gave him his first name. “Mom named me after the angel [in the Bible],” he says. His middle name? Antonio. Yes, that one. Antonio Banderas. That ’s his dad’s contribution.

and he passed it on to his son. “I’m pretty sure that I was born with a soccer ball next to me,” the son says. “My Dad taught me how to play soccer. And how to play with heart.” Being named as one of the team’s four captains, along with Hatfield, David Joseph and Jeremy Weber, was heartwar ming f or Diculescu. Wearing that black band around his right arm is a big deal for him. And standing up to make a speech in f ront of teammates, while winning their hearts, also was a big deal. The theme of his speech? “Don’t give up,” says Diculescu, who aptly wears the No. 10 jersey. “Keep pushing through.” “I could tell the moment that I took over the program that the other players on the team respected him,” says Lara. “The other guys recognize how hard he plays. And he did a good job with his speech. “He got it, hands down,” Lara adds. Notable: Glenbrook South (10-2-2, 1-0-1) has put together a solid season so far. The Titans defeated visiting Niles West 2-0 on Sept. 12, and then they came away with ties against host Evanston 1-1 on Sept. 14 and visiting Lake Forest 2-2 on Sept. 16. … Junior for ward Jimmy McMahon was a standout in the Lake Forest contest. He assisted Matthew Ruth in the 42nd minute and then scored on a feed f rom Jonathan Hernandez in the 72nd minute. … Senior captain Jeremy Weber has been capitalizing of late. Off an assist by McMahon, he tallied his team’s lone goal in the tie against Evanston. That same combination also teamed up for a goal against Niles West. Ruth converted a pass f rom Jhovanny Guadarrama on the team’s other goal. … Senior goalkeeper Michael Hatfield also has been a bright spot. He racked up six saves.
