‘Joseph’ and the added shows Popularity prompts Citadel Theatre to extend run of musical BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It’s going to need another coat. Or five. Not a painted wall; the run of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest this month. Five performances have been added. The production, originally scheduled to end on December 23 (after opening on November 16), will run through December 30 instead. “I knew that there was a possibility that we would be selling out performances,” Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Scott Phelps says. “It ’s very popular.” The additional shows: December 27 at 7:30 p.m.; December 28 at 7:00 p.m.; December 29 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; and December 30 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are Continued on PG 18
Oh my, Clemantine NTHS Alumnus Award winner retells harrowing, inspiring story of survival BY MARK LAWTON THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Ask Clemantine Wamariya where she’s from, and you’d get an equivocal answer. “I was born in Rwanda. I am from Chicago,” Wamariya, 30, says. “Sometimes I feel like I am from nowhere.” Wamariya (New Trier High School, Class of 2008), who will receive the 2019 Young Alumnus Award from NTHS in March, has a background that’s unequivocally disparate compared to most of her former North Shore classmates’ upbringings. She escaped genocide, experienced separation from most of her family and had to resort to (along with her older sister) borrowing kitchenware — all at the age of … 6. Wamariya’s early years were spent in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. As a little girl she recalls helping her mother in the garden, climbing a mango tree with her brother, visiting her grandparents’ farm and never hesitating to ask a question when one popped up in her mind. “I’d ask, ‘How are things growing out of the ground?’” Wamariya says. “I was curious about the moon and the stars and how a car is driven.” She particularly liked kindergarten. “I had all the attention I could possibly get from everybody,” Wamariya says. “I liked talking to everyone.” In her sixth year, things changed. Drastically. Her parents informed Clemantine of their intent to send her to her grandparents’ farm. At first she was excited. “I loved being there,” Wamariya says. “I didn’t have to wear shoes; that was a rule. I loved not wearing shoes.” Wamariya and her older sister, Claire, skipped the usual stop to pick up soap and sugar for their grandparents one day and arrived to find other people at the farm. NEWS OH MY, CLEMANTINE Continued from PG 1 “It was very quiet,” Wamariya says. “I tried to figure out what’s going on. Then everything started getting loud.” Wamariya pauses in her recollection. “I don’t really like going into my memory,” she admits. “I’ve worked so hard to get out of that moment.” In springtime 1994 Wamariya found herself in the middle of the Rwandan genocide. In a span of 100 days the Hutu majority killed more than 800,000 Tutsi people, according to one estimate. Up to another 2 million people fled Rwanda. Wamariya and her sister were among them. She recalls fleeing to the adjacent country of Burundi. “Some people were crying,” Wamariya says. “Claire tried to find a way for us to get food and water. We borrowed pots and pans.” She recalls walking behind a blue-and-white United Nations truck for hours, being fingerprinted at Ngozi refugee camp and putting up a tent every day. “Every day I wanted to go home,” Wamariya says. “I would ask Claire, and she would tell me tomorrow, and tomorrow would never arrive.” A year passed. They went to Zaire, later renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). At first they learned the language, and Wamariya enjoyed visiting a nearby lake. “Then there was curfew and more guns and more noise,” Wamariya says. The sisters were in the middle of one of two civil wars (waged from 1996-2003) in the DRC. They moved on to a refugee camp in Tanzania. Clemantine and Claire wound up staying in seven countries, including Mozambique, South Africa, Malawi and Zambia. They learned five languages. The travel was always hazardous. “We would hide and hide and walk a lot,” Wamariya recounts. “If you got caught by Immigration [authorities], you’d get thrown in jail or a refugee camp.” Claire got married to an aid worker during the trying times. The couple and Clemantine moved to South Africa, and life was a bit better for about a year until trouble marred Claire’s marriage. The sisters moved again. In 2000 they gained refugee status in the United States and moved to Chicago. Clemantine and Claire had been wandering around Africa for six years. The Church of the Redeemer helped settle the sisters in Glenview. Later they moved to the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, where Clemantine attended Swift Elementary School. “I was 13 and starting school, in sixth grade,” she

says. “While growing up, sleeping outside, my sister taught me how to count money and made me read the bible. I knew how to read in Swahili and four other languages, although I couldn’t read English.” “After that,” Wamariya adds, “my life became very academic. I was so hungry to form words and share.” She went to North Shore Country Day in Winnetka for a year, moved in with the Thomas family in Kenilworth and then transferred to New Trier High School in Winnetka. She got involved in volleyball, dance team and theater. “She was able to access an extreme range of emotions in a way other students weren’t able to,” recalls one of Wamariya’s teachers, NTHS Media, Speech & Theatre Department Chair Hilerre Kirsch. “It’s really due to the depth and breadth of her life experience,” Kirsch adds. Kirsch didn’t know Wamariya’s background until the student had been in her class for several months. “She was pretty private about it around the other students,” Kirsch says. “They really had no way of understanding it, no frame of reference.” On weekends Wamariya stayed with her sister in Edgewater, helping out with Claire’s kids, cooking and cleaning. In 2006, during her senior year at NTHS, she wrote an essay about the memoir Night by Holocaust survivor and human rights advocate Elie Wiesel. The essay earned her and 49 other contest winners an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. “Oprah called me to the stage,” Wamariya says. “I was excited to see Elie Wiesel. Then Oprah tells me my family is here.” Onto the stage walked her parents, her younger sister and two additions to the family. Wamariya, 18 at the time, hadn’t seen her parents in 12 years. “People in Berlin know me because of this,” Wamariya says. “When I go to different parts of Africa, they know me.” Wamariya studied comparative literature at Yale University. She graduated in 2014 and moved to San Francisco, where she connected with Elizabeth Weil, a writer and contributor to The New York Times Magazine. The two collaborated on Wamariya’s memoir, The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After, which was published by Penguin/Random House this past spring. “[The memoir] is basically my life now,” Wamariya says. She now travels around the world discussing human rights, has given a TED (technology, entertainment, design) talk and was appointed — as the youngest member ever, in 2011 — to the board of the U.S. Holocaust Museum by former President Barack Obama.
New Trier High School will honor Clemantine Wamariya with its 2019 Young Alumnus Award in March.

NEWS
O’HARE REPORT
An interview with award-winning actor and Northwestern University alumnus Denis O’Hare anytime soon, but I could see myself directing a movie. I recently had my first screenplay produced – The Parting Glass — which is a movie about my little sister’s suicide in 2010 and my family’s struggle to collect her belongings from her rented Missouri apartment and make sense of her decision to end her life. I have many more movies in me. I’m fairly bursting with screenplay ideas — and in fact have been pitching a TV project for the last two years and have two other TV projects in development. Getting my first movie made has only whetted my appetite for more and sometimes, in the film world, being the writer and director [and actor] is a powerful combination that can really focus the minds of both producers and audiences alike.
BY GREGG SHAPIRO THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Tony Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated Northwestern University alumnus Denis O’Hare (1984) has been perfecting his craft on television, in movies and on stage for more than 25 years. Working steadily since the `90s, O’Hare truly hit his stride during the 21st century when he won his Tony (for Take Me Out) and earned acclaim for his performances in popular TV shows, including This Is Us, True Blood, American Horror Story, The Good Wife and Brothers & Sisters. An expat currently living in Paris, O’Hare was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions.
According to the IMDb, you have several upcoming film projects. Are there any that you’d like to mention? The Goldfinch promises to be a great film. John Crowley is a fantastic director, and I was so happy to spend time with him. There is a small film called Swallow that was one of the best screenplays I’ve read in some time, and the writer/director Carlo Mirabella–Davis is someone you are going to be hearing from much more in the future. Late Night is also a movie I’m really looking forward to. Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson, Reid Scott — c’mon! Loved the experience, loved the script. I hope it’s very funny. I also just finished negotiations with the National Theatre in London, where I’ll be performing Tartuffe in February 2019. It’s such a great honor to be an American working in London — especially at the National. And I love Molière.
Over the course of 25 years, your movie and television résumé includes a mix of comedies and dramas. Do you have a preference for one over the other, and if so, which and why? Ask any actor and they will tell you that comedy is harder. And it is. I suppose it depends upon which kind of comedy, but there is a paranoia and tension when doing comedy — a second-guessing that can be very intense. Drama has a wider latitude and the acceptable range of interpretation is more forgiving. I love the fact that I get to practice both. Finding the tone of any piece is tricky and some pieces don’t fit into any category simply. The Good Wife is one of those shows that has a tricky tone. During your acting career, you have portrayed characters based on real people as you did in Milk ( John Briggs), When We Rise ( Jim Foster), J. Edgar (Albert Osborn), Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive (Poe) and the forthcoming Butterfly in the Typewriter ( John Dewey Toole). What are the challenges and rewards of portraying that kind of character on-screen? Anytime you play a real person you risk mere impersonation, which is a shallow form of acting. The trick is to get beyond the surface traits and explicate the character’s inner life, contradictions, flaws. The most intense experience I ever had playing a real person was during A Mighty Heart, the Michael Winterbottom film about journalist Daniel Pearl. I played John Bussey — a real editor at The Wall Street Journal, and I met with him and had dinners with him and studied him during the filming. I called him in Hong Kong several times to go over the material for the next day’s shoot. I wanted to make sure I represented him correctly — mostly about his POV — less about his mannerisms. And of course, I heard through the grapevine that he didn’t much like my portrayal of him. But I heard from colleagues who thought that I pretty much got him. Who knows? Doing someone like Poe is a little easier in that we don’t know what he sounded like. There are descriptions of his voice and mannerisms, but accents are elusive over time and change radically. What a Baltimore-Richmond-Boston accent sounded like in 1840? I have no idea. And neither does anyone else. For Poe, I just grew a spectacular moustache and put on a wig!
to access bigger, more fundamental emotions. I’m not much interested in Friday the 13th type shows since these are all about mindless plot. Torture porn. Not for me. Horror as represented by True Blood and American Horror Story, however, is all about character. What you are called upon to do as an actor is very satisfying, very challenging. Russell Edgington (the Vampire King of Mississippi in True Blood) was a deep, complex character who came from a pre-Christian world and was a blend of Gaulish and Celtic peasant and antebellum landowner. He could be viciously funny, casually cruel and tragic in an almost Greek sense. Everyone always talks about the newscaster moment – when Russell ripped the spine out of TV anchor. This was great theater, but the speech that followed that moment was an impassioned cry against what Russell perceived as the arrogance of a mainstream culture “deciding” to tolerate the other. Alex Woo, who wrote that speech and that episode is an incredibly talented playwright who always brought more to the show than just memorable moments. In AHS, I had the opportunity to play a very diverse set of characters — each one presenting a different technical or emotional challenge. Playing Liz Taylor in Season 5: Hotel, I was struck by how often I was asked to cry, weep, choke back tears, give way to despair, fight emotions and deeply sob. I loved it.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have appeared in two of the most popular TV horror series — True Blood and American Horror Story. Can you please say something about the appeal of this genre to you as an actor? As I’ve said elsewhere, doing horror allows you
You have an extensive background in theater. You Over the years, you have worked with an incredwon a Tony Award for Take Me Out, Drama Desk ible array of directors, including Tamara Jenkins, Awards for Sweet Charity and Take Me Out, and Gus Van Sant, Clint Eastwood, Mike Nichols and you earned three Emmy Award nominations Woody Allen, among others. Would you like to for This Is Us and American Horror Story. As an direct a movie or a play? artist, what does that kind of recognition mean to I don’t really have any intentions to direct a play

you? As an artist, I’m not sure awards mean much. They are too political and too many times they reflect some sort of popularity contest or a moment in the zeitgeist, which needs to be rewarded or reflected. As an artist, it’s very dangerous to rely too much on external validation. Of course, what we do, we do for the audience [members] and to reach them and to affect them so we are not simply creating in a vacuum. Obviously, having won awards, I was very excited, but I think we spend way too much time thinking and talking about winners and losers. It’s part of the bad part of the American competitive spirit. Once in a while the theater world and the movie world meet in your work, as in the case of the Emmy Award-winning The Normal Heart, in which you played Hiram Keebler. What did it mean to you to be a part of that production? I loved the opportunity to work with Joe Mantello as an actor. Joe has directed me twice, and it was such a kick to be with him in that ensemble. All the actors were magnificent — starting with Mark Ruffalo and including Finn Wittrock and Matt Bomer, who gave such a good performance. And of course, I’ll do most anything Ryan Murphy asks me to do.

You graduated from Northwestern University in 1984. Do you have any fond memories of living in Evanston at that time that you would like to share with the readers? I lived in the Orrington Apartments, which were very adult for 18-19 year olds. I remember learning to cook there — mostly mac and cheese with tuna thrown in, but hey ... it’s a start! I also spent waaayyy too much time drinking at Colorado Company. Too many nachos, too. There was a great old theater (The Varsity) downtown, which showed classic movies and cutting edge European films, and that was such an important education for me. I learned to bartend at the Famous Deli and Pub, and I became a pretty good waiter at The Keg. I ended up moving to Main Street when I was a junior and stayed there for two years. I liked being farther away from NU and pretending that I was a real person. I had excellent roommates and made friends that are with me to this day — James Sie, Frank DeCaro, Harry Althaus and Tim Engle, just to name a few. Both Evanston and Chicago are renowned for their vibrant theater scenes. Were you able to take part in theater in the region while you were living in the area? Yes. I learned to be an actor in Chicago theaters ... Wisdom Bridge, Remains, Body Politic, Victory Gardens, The Goodman, Stormfield Theatre, the Court Theatre. The only place that never saw fit to hire me was Steppenwolf. I juggled waiting tables and acting for a long time and then eventually went Equity, but I still couldn’t make a living at it. I loved my acting experiences in Chicago and still feel like I’m a Chicago actor at heart. There’s a certain fearlessness in Chicago acting — like playing jazz. You know where you’re headed, you know the lines, but you have no idea where the evening will take you. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Firefly — the place to feast and flit on New Year’s Eve
ABOVE: Filet with Fingerling Potatoes and Bordelaise Sauce. LEFT: Endive, Bleu Cheese and Pear Salad PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER
BY LIBBY ELLIOTT THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
New Year’s Eve is the restaurant industry’s Black Friday. For eateries across the country, December 31 is the biggest night of the year, when seats are reserved, food offerings are enhanced and champagne is the drink of choice for revelers. It’s early December at Firefly Kitchen in Wilmette, but husband and wife owners Mia Zifkin and Dean Salerno are already preparing to host a large crowd for the final night of 2018. The couple will open its lively 68-seat Green Bay Road restaurant for a New Year’s Eve dinner party featuring music spun by DJ Grief Richards, a complimentary midnight champagne toast and a celebratory feast prepared by Salerno himself, including Salmon & Tuna Tartare served on Potato Gaufrette, Truffle Mushroom Bisque and a Beef Filet with Bordelaise Sauce. “We plan to do a 6 p.m. seating for the early crowd,” Salerno says. “These are the folks who want a nice meal before they head out for the night.
24
Our later seating is for people who want to settle in and linger over a bottle of wine.” Since opening in Wilmette nearly four years ago, Firefly Kitchen has built a loyal following of foodies who come from both north and south to sample Salerno’s eclectic, seasonal food, often described as a blend of New York and Chicago — much like Firefly’s owners. The couple met more than ten years ago in a bustling New York restaurant, where Zifkin, an Evanston native, waited tables and Bronx-born Salerno worked in the kitchen. “I was a struggling actress and a bad waitress,” Zifkin cracks. “Dean was a sous-chef. I somehow persuaded him to move to Chicago with me and start a business.” The busy restaurateurs now live in Evanston with their 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. Salerno oversees Firefly’s food, while Zifkin manages the restaurant’s business affairs. Zifkin finds time to teach fitness classes on the side. Firefly’s décor reflects the couple’s youthful, urban style. Black-and-white photos of the Brooklyn Bridge and Chicago landmarks, as well a song lyrics from U2 and The Who, adorn the restaurant’s walls.
And while Salerno spends most nights in the kitchen preparing Firefly’s signature dishes like Roasted Organic Chicken, Truffle Mushroom Risotto and his famous Salerno Burger — a hearty entrée featuring meat from an NYC butcher topped with bacon, fried egg and avocado — he makes it a point each night to mingle with diners in the front of house. “There’s a trust there,” Salerno insists. “Whether I’m recommending a wine or one of our specials, I want my customers to know this job is more than just a paycheck. “It’s also my life.” Building around Firefly’s perennially popular regular dishes, Salerno rotates the menu multiple times each year to reflect the changing seasons. Wintertime, comfort food-style appetizers include Goat Cheese Fondue Chips and Black Mission Figs wrapped in bacon and served with blue cheese and an apricot glaze. Salerno prides himself on Firefly’s versatile menu, which can easily be adapted to suit a customer’s dietary restrictions, whether it’s removing the cheese from a dish to accommodate a vegan or changing a sauce for a lactose-intolerant patron.
| SATURDAY DECEMBER 15 | SUNDAY DECEMBER 16 2018
“I like variety; my menu is eclectic,” Salerno says. Firefly’s brimful drinks menu — consisting of specialty cocktails, craft beer and wine from around the world — mirrors Salerno’s attention to detail. A small subset of wines, including a handpicked selection of old-and new-world wines curated by Salerno, made “The Dean’s List”. Firefly’s desserts are all prepared in-house. Scrumptious fare includes apple tart, carrot cake and a gooey, chocolate molten lava cake. Open six nights a week for dinner and weekends for brunch, Firefly Kitchen also accommodates book clubs, family gatherings and private events in its spacious 45-seat upstairs dining room. When a college football game is on TV, Zifkin reports, Firefly’s 15-seat bar is typically packed with local fans. “We like to think of Firefly as a neighborhood restaurant,” Zifkin says. “We’re located right in the heart of a residential community, and we love having regulars.” Firefly Kitchen is located at 111 Green Bay Road in Wilmette. ‘Nat’-tily suited HPHS senior guard Natinsky wearing starter’s role well BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Andrew Natinsky completed a college application after a boys basketball game late last month. The Highland Park High School senior guard suited up for a Giants game at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, returned home and then cleaned up his essays about home life, leadership roles and academics for the admissions office folks at the University of Texas at Austin. “I’m applying to five schools,” the 6-foot-1, 170-
Curt Hanson for helping him hone his shooting technique from the field and free-throw line. “Coaches … they’re such a big part of our program,” Natinsky said. A fairly big moment in the second half of the Schurz game started with an inbound pass from Giants sophomore guard Billy Rudman. HP led 40-36 in the fourth quarter at the time. A referee handed the ball to Rudman near midcourt. Natinsky then curled away, slowly, from a pair of Bulldogs before cutting sharply to the basket as Rudman’s delivery reached its apex. Natinsky, wide open behind a stunned Schurz defense, secured the descending lead pass in stride and netted a casual layup. Schurz cut HP’s lead to three points twice in the final five minutes of the frame. Giants junior guard Zach Fagenholz deflected a Schurz pass, resulting in a late turnover with the game still in doubt. “Huge,” Harris said of Fagenholz’s clutch disruption. “We call deflections the ‘lifeblood of defense’. We always talk about them; we tell our guys, ‘Hands above your elbows.’ ” Beermann came down with a team-best five boards to go with his nine points. Junior forward Val Oplchenski — after having missed the entire 2017-18 season because of a ligament tear in a knee — tallied six of his 10 points in the third quarter, when each team scored only eight points. “Val demanded the ball more than he had in the first half, and our guards did a better job of making sure he got more touches,” Harris said of the 6-5, 208-pounder. “Val,” Natinsky added, “gave us a great spark there in the third quarter.”
“Andrew is adjusting to a different role. He’s also embracing it more and more with each game.”
pounded said two days later, following HP’s 49-44 defeat of visiting Schurz High School on December 1. About a month ago, or at the start of his final prep hoops season, Natinsky was accepted — as a varsity starter. By his coaches. By his teammates. He had served the Giants’ varsity squad last winter as a complementary player. This year he’s already receiving compliments for his consistent exploits on the court. Natinsky, who poured in a team-high 18 points in the Schurz game, owned averages of 11.3 points, two rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.7 steals and a team-high four deflections through December 6. “Andrew,” Giants coach Paul Harris said, “is adjusting to a different role. He’s also embracing it more and more with each game.” HPHS, with an overall record of 5-4 (through Dec. 8), split its first two Central Suburban League North games. Natinsky opened the scoring against Schurz, nailing a silky three-pointer in the first minute. His form during the shot was textbook. Some three minutes later he quickly redirected a pass (think of a one-timer in hockey), with the ball ending up in the hands of senior guard Cole Beermann, who made an easy bucket to put the hosts up 11-6. Natinsky stole a pass shortly thereafter, hustled in transition and hit a jumper from the middle of the lane.

Notable: HPHS’s boys basketball team defeated visiting Maine East High School 47-38 on December 7 and fell 48-16 to Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville the next night. Natinsky scored all of his team-high five points in the first half in the latter contest. Junior guardforward Josh Mack and junior guard Ari Cooper each hit a trey in the fourth quarter for the Giants. Second-to-none Zun Trevians junior paces champion New Trier at nine-team invite BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Rachel Zun vacationed with her family in Hawaii for five days in June. She certainly deserved the break. The New Trier High School junior gymnast hadn’t taken a day off from training since falling short in her bid to qualify for the state meet on the uneven bars at a sectional meet. That meet took place back in February. “I trained in Hawaii, too,” the Trevian admitted last weekend. “All five days. “I was disappointed with how I did at the sectional and determined to work hard. Every day. I love it. I love gymnastics.” Zun returned to the mainland in June. Zun continued her streak of training daily, mostly at American Academy of Gymnastics in
12, multiply that figure by 15 and come up with the right answer in mere seconds. The 2017 state beam champion, after all, tutors math students, some as young as seventh graders and some as old as seniors in high school. Murdock hears “Now I see” from her tutees in libraries and homes. She passed the test on beam last weekend, recording a fourth-place 9.225. But she’d like to erase her 8.9 on the bars, even though only five others in the field of 36 scored higher in the event than she did. “She was not happy after her bars routine,” Pistorius said of Murdock, a threat to score 37 or more points in the all-around at any meet. “But she’ll be fine. She’s laid back and chill, can get silly at times. Maeve likes to have fun, just like all of her teammates do. “This group,” the coach added, “is a good one; everybody likes each other.” Each Trevian also likes the team’s new threads. Pistorius’ girls no longer wear leotards that had been considered “a little subdued,” Pistorius noted. NT’s gymnasts debuted the new look last month. “The leotards are sparkly,” said Pistorius, whose crew shone at that dual with Deerfield’s Warriors with a season-high 144.14 points to Deerfield’s 132.05. The bulk of the Trevians’ routines at the Spartan Classic matched the appearance of the Trevians’ rookie garments. “They’re new, they’re fresh, and they’re our goodluck leotards,” Murdock, another polished American Academy of Gymnastics product, said before receiving three top-four medals at last weekend’s invite.
“We’ve had girls get hurt, get sick. But we’re lucky because of our depth. Our depth … we have 12 or 15 in the varsity group who are capable of contributing scores for us.”
Wheeling. Guess who stood higher than anybody else did on the awards podium for all-arounders at the Spartan Classic at Glenbrook North on December 8? None other than Zun — wearing a gold medal this time, not a lei. Zun totaled 36.25 points, ahead of classmate Maeve Murdock (second place, 36.2) and senior teammate Darcy Barkal (third, 35.9). Zun also silvered in two events: bars (9.25) and floor exercise (9.15). And she did all of the above while dealing with a lingering abdominal injury. “Got hurt when I was warming up for a meet,” Zun recalled, referring to NT’s dual meet with Deerfield High School on November 27. “I felt something while doing a standing back.” Zun and her mates stood tall at the nine-team Spartan Classic, topping the field with a 143.425point effort. Runner-up and Central Suburban League South rival Glenbrook South High School finished with 140.475 points. Barkal, a co-captain,

left Northbrook with gold medals for her marks on vault (9.775) and floor (9.25). Senior co-captain Zoey Spangler negotiated her way to a meet-best 9.375 on the balance beam. “I’m proud of our team,” said Trevians girls gymnastics coach Jen Pistorius, whose team captured an invitational title at Glenbard West High School the previous weekend. “There was pressure at this meet, more than usual, because only four competed in each event and all four scores counted

But we’re lucky because of our depth. Notable: Barkal, Spangler and seniors Erin Murdoch and Ariana Solot are serving as New Trier’s girls gymnastics co-captains this winter. … Trevians junior Avery Faulkner — the all-around champion at the Glenbard West Invitational on December 1 — rested a sore shin last weekend. … Pistorius’ daughter Caleigh Pistorius, a senior at Maine South High School and a 2017 co-state beam champ (with Maeve Murdock), suffered two dislocated elbows at the same time at a national gymnastics meet earlier this year. Mom witnessed the horrific double injury. Daughter did not have to undergo surgery and made a remarkable recovery. Lake Forest High School: The Scouts placed third (134.575 points) at last weekend’s Spartan Classic at Glenbrook North behind the strength of freshman Taylor Cekay’s fourth-place showing in the all-around (35.625). Cekay finished just ahead of sophomore teammate Kristin Fisch (fifth place, 35.5). Cekay bronzed on beam (9.275), and Fisch collected a pair of third-place medals with a 9.375 on vault and a 9.05 on floor. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Armour hammers home the spirit of LCCF BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
A young girl named Miah watches Hmong refugees from Thailand enter and exit her home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It’s the 1970s. Her parents, staunch Eau Claire Community Foundation members Jon and Maureen, welcome the refugees.
We look at it [the Lake County Community Foundation, born in 2003] as a teenager — it’s developing into a solid citizen, and we’re navigating it through the teen years.
The immediate warmth the refugees receive has little to do with the home’s furnace and a lot to do with the support and care from the home’s family members. Maureen helps the refugees — hundreds of refugees — resettle in the United States. She does this through a local Lutheran church. She becomes a godparent to some of the refugees, including the youngest of a family’s seven children. The youngest is a 5-year-old daughter; Miah is a third-grader. “Today that girl works in Saint Paul, Minnesota,” Miah Armour, now 50 and a Lake Bluff resident, says. “She’s a judge,” Armour adds. Armour, sitting at a booth at the Full Moon Family Restaurant on a snowy morning in Lake Bluff, pauses, collects herself. Emotions course through her. The vision of the former tot in a robe in a courtroom makes Armour happy and proud. The path to the judge’s bench in “The North Star State” essentially began on a welcome mat in west-central Wisconsin. “My father was civic-minded, philanthropic and an effective leader in the community when I was growing up,” Armour says, adding her parents now live in Naples, Florida. “My mom was a teacher before I was born. She loved education. Both were avid volunteers and commu-
46
nity leaders in Eau Claire. “That Eau Claire Community Foundation … both were in the group that started it,” she continues. “They were in their 40s. It meant a lot to them, community involvement. I watched them do things for others, year after year. I admired them.” Armour’s occupation today: executive director of the Lake County Community Foundation (LCCF), based in Waukegan and an affiliate of The Chicago Community Trust. LCCF — which celebrated its 15th anniversary last month by hosting a “stART Something Lake County” Warehouse Art Party at Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff — brings together philanthropists and donors and dollars and ideas to build permanent funds to benefit Lake County. Since 2003 LCCF has served as a catalyst for generosity and change; a connector of people and organizations; and as the permanent steward of charitable funds dedicated to improving the lives of the most vulnerable residents of Lake County. “Our organization is still young,” says Armour, LCCF executive director since 2016 and an LCCF board member from 2010-16. “We look at it as a teenager — it’s developing into a solid citizen, and we’re navigating it through the teen years. Lake County has many needs. It is also home to many talented people who are capable of making a difference for nonprofits and, ultimately, for people who need help. “I have a background in marketing and branding, and I’m excited about applying my experiences in business to what I’m doing now, which is strategic philanthropy. I love mission-based work.” Armour attended Memorial High School, home of the Old Abes, in Eau Claire. She whipped fast pitches for the school’s varsity softball team in two seasons. She also golfed and played basketball. She was a member of the debate team. Great-grandmother Inez taught Miah how to play the piano; Miah still plays the piano today, as does her 7-year-old son, Wyatt. Miah and her husband, Lake Forest native Kelley, have been married for 16 years. Armour double-majored in International Relations and French at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and, for one summer, managed mentors for the New Americans program back home. She matched immigrants with host families. Like parents, like daughter. In 1991 Armour found herself in Washington, D.C. Her father had arranged for her to meet
people affiliated with the Office of National Service. She became an intern for then-President George H.W. Bush’s Points of Life Foundation, a nonprofit created to promote the spirit of volunteerism. The internship lasted

two months. She then got promoted to Daily Point of Life researcher, one of 18. She held that post for nearly two years. “I interviewed and met amazing people as a researcher,” Armour recalls above her German Breakfast order — scrambled eggs, potato pancakes, bacon — at Full Moon. “My original plan was to go to business school.” Armour did make her mark in business, completing stints with Accenture Global Marketing and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. She commuted from Green Oaks to Milwaukee while working in the American motorcycle manufacturer’s styling department from 2000-07. Harley-Davidson observed its 100th anniversary in 2003. “The Internet was a fairly new medium then, but we used it to celebrate Harley-Davidson’s products, to tell Harley-Davidson stories,” Armour says. “I was on a team that put a video together; the team oversaw the company’s branding, as well as its online advertising. Our cast in the video captured what we felt was the essence of a Harley-Davidson owner — freedom. A motorcyclist on the road represents freedom. “We want to use stor ytelling to help us build awareness for the Lake County Community Foundation.” LCCF’s 15th anniversary bash last month illustrated that quest quite nicely. A warehouse was transformed into an eye-popping backdrop for the unique event. More than a dozen local artists (painters, sculptors and muralists, among others) produced artwork live, on site, with the pieces auctioned off in support of LCCF’s Robert F. Reusché Operating Endowment (Lake County’s Forever Fund). It showcased the power of creativity and giving. “You can build vibrant communities through art and philanthropy, ” Armour says.
