The Lake Bluff History Museum presents its annual home tour on December 2 The Lake Bluff History Museum’s annual Christmas Home Tour returns to Lake Bluff on December 2. Participants will get an insider’s glimpse at five Lake Bluff homes decorated to reflect each owner’s unique style.

The popular fundraising event also features two holiday boutiques with diverse offerings from numerous vendors; they will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate shopping before, during and after the Christmas Home Tour.

The tour’s most historic home is a Queen Anne-style house built in the late 1800s by Reverend Charles Trusdell, a Methodist minister who was also the Village of Lake Bluff ’s first president. This two-story home boasted a wraparound porch, which faced Artesian Lake (the area now known as Artesian Park). The house was renovated and enlarged in the 1990s and more recently by its current owners to combine the best of its historic features with modern-day living. The homeowner’s holiday décor lends vintage sparkle.

NEWS PIANO BOY GENIUS Continued from PG 1 took his first piano lesson at the age of 4.

“He was very focused on listening to music,” April recalls.

Eric’s parents received glowing reports from Eric’s piano teacher. Their son had perfect pitch, they were told, and that when he listened to songs, he could figure out the notes and play by ear.

Earlier this year Eric won the Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition (Concerto division) in Carvel, Indiana. His other recent achievements included third place at the Illinois State Piano Competition by the Illinois State Music Teachers Association and Honorable Mention honors at the 2018 DePaul Concerto Competition.

He recently completed his first solo recital at the Thoresen Performance Center in Winnetka, performing a Chinese folk song and works by Mozart, Bartok, Bach and Chopin.

Chopin is the young pianist’s favorite composer.

“He wrote pieces that have a lot of emotion,” Eric says.

Eric kept his nervousness in check for most of the recital. While “nervous,” he says, the butterflies disappeared when his opening piece got “a nice

reaction” from the estimated 90 friends, family and teachers in attendance (the family had expected around 30 to show up for the performance at the start of the planning stages).

“So many people were there, I told myself, ‘Just enjoy the music and play well,’ ” he recalls. “But then I thought, ‘I need to do the next piece well, too.’ ” Eric — a restless pianist in the early going of his music career, because he couldn’t run around — says he has learned to appreciate the piano. He cites Lang Lang, the Chinese pianist whom The New York Times once called “the hottest artist on the classical music planet,” as the musician he most admires, mostly for his “charming personality” and the expressiveness with which he plays.

Eric practices the piano an hour each day. He also plays tennis, takes swimming lessons and swims competitively. But piano is his favorite activity.

“I don’t know how far he can go,” his mother says. “It will be his decision. Right now, he doesn’t get a lot of homework. As long as he is enjoying it, we are happy. It’s a good, healthy way to spend his time.”

Eric has an ambition beyond the concert halls and sports venues, and, no surprise, it’s a lofty one.

I’ve known Joel Kaufmann, author of How Not So Little Tommy Got Down to Size (Inner-Workings Chicago, 2018) a long time. Born 22 days apart at nearby hospitals, we both spent our early years in Albany Park before our families relocated to Skokie.

He attended Niles North High School, and I went to Niles East HS; we graduated in the same year.

Joel studied at a college in Chicago, while I chose to go to a college in Boston. We never lost touch.

We saw each other when I came back to visit. Joel and his wife, Shelly, came to visit me in Boston.

Of course, I guess that’s the kind of thing that first cousins who grew up together would do.

Kaufmann’s timely debut children’s book about Not So Little Tommy couldn’t have come at a better time. With childhood obesity statistics on the minds of many parents, he approaches the topic with sensitivity and compassion. I spoke with Kaufmann, who has been a Highland Park resident since 1987, about the book in September, just ahead of its launch. [How Not So Little Tommy Got Down to Size is for sale at Lake Forest Book Store.]

Gregg Shapiro: Your debut children’s book, How Not So Little Tommy Got Down to Size, addresses the subject of childhood obesity. Could you please say something about your interest in childhood obesity and nutrition?

Joel Kaufmann: It began with a bit of reflection, and an understanding that I was going down that road. Had it not been for early, yet subtle, intervention by my parents, supported not so subtly by high school coaches who, somewhat selfishly, knew they could get more out of an in-shape, multi-position ball player than a designated hitter. This was a project started nearly 25 years ago and then interrupted by life circumstances. I was stunned to learn, prior to

Tour participants will find Christmas trees in every room among various collections of Santas, snowmen, carolers and nutcrackers. The Christmas decor has vintage and woodland details. Also featured are artistic paintings, including themed children’s rooms (Whitehead Studios generously decorated the mantel with lovely ornaments and trees). The second is a beautifully designed modern five-bedroom single family home.

Nine-foot ceilings throughout the first floor make for stunning living and dining rooms, and a warm, cozy family room with fireplace opens to a recently renovated stylish kitchen.

One of the two “newest” homes on the tour is a Prairie Style home originally built in 1905. It was the first home and studio of artist William Henderson and his wife, the poet Alice Corbin Henderson. Although the home has been remodeled over the years, the 2018 renovation took care to keep the outside style with original U-shaped footprint, horizontal lines, hipped roof and pink color. Inside, the home was expanded for modern living, and the original

artist’s studio was converted into a first-floor master bed and bath. Paintings William Henderson made of this house in 1916 and a photo of Henderson and his family members from their days in Santa Fe pay homage to these pioneers of Lake Bluff artistry.

And, the new home (2018) on the tour is a charming cottage style that blends into the historic neighborhood that surrounds it. Featuring reclaimed beams and an open floor plan, the home provides a warm and welcoming feel upon entering. The main living space provides a setting for great views of Lake Michigan and Sunrise Park.

Tickets for the event are $45 and available for purchase online or at the museum. Tours start

between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Participants are provided a guide and the information needed to take the self-guided tour.

Longtime participants should note that this year’s event was moved to Sunday so that attendees could enjoy both the museum’s Christmas Home Tour and Lake Bluff ’s “It’s a Wonderful Life in Lake Bluff ” festivities — including visits with Santa at the museum — scheduled for the previous day.

The Christmas Home Tour is a key fundraiser for the volunteer-run, non-profit entity. The Lake Bluff History Museum researches, preserves and shares area history through a variety of activities and events, including programs like these tours. The museum displays tell stories of Lake Bluff ’s past, and its archives provide individuals with access to documents, records, photographs and other materials.

LEGACY OF LEARNING More than 700 people came out on October 12 to celebrate and tour Lake Forest College’s new $43-million science building — the Lillard Science Center

It’s been more than two years since Lake Forest College broke ground on the Lillard Science Center, a 130,000-square-foot research and teaching facility offering state-of-the-art classrooms and labs and areas for students to congregate and collaborate.

The long-awaited facility was finally unveiled on October 12.

More than 700 people came out for the grand opening to tour the new $43 million Lillard Science Center, named in honor of long-time Lake Forest residents John and Paula Lillard.

This expanded facility makes it possible for the college to bring together the biology, chemistry, physics and psychology departments with environmental studies, neuroscience, and new biochemistry and molecular biology programs. The new labs encourage student-led research and provide more opportunities for LFC students to work with faculty members on their research projects — something that is typically only found at the graduate-school level. More than 40 percent of the College’s current student population plan to major in the sciences.

“We knew this is how the tide was turning,” says John Lillard. “Students are choosing science majors because they know they will get jobs. Our world needs them.”

He and his wife, Paula, have championed this project for more than a decade, knowing that the college would continue to thrive and excel with such an enhancement.

“Lake Forest College is best known as one of our nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, but a growing Paula and John Lillard.

“Behind the scenes, he helped creatively think about what this center could be. John knew intuitively what this new addition, coupled with its proximity to Chicago, could mean to the College today and beyond.”

The Lillards’ influence is palpable throughout the innovative learning center, with its interdisciplinary structures nestled among the preserved prairie on LFC’s middle campus, even boasting its own rooftop garden.

“John and Paula Lillard have been remarkable supporters of the College for years,” says Lake Forest College President Steve Schutt. “They are both highly respected and long-serving members of our Board of Trustees, and they believe deeply in the value of the education we

provide. John and Paula have been two of our most generous contributors over many years; their lead gift for the science center is simply the most recent of their contributions. It’s an honor for the college to name our new science center after them.”

On November 3 more than 300 guests gathered for the Auditorium Theatre’s 2018 Annual Fall Gala, raising more than $355,000. Mel Katten, a longtime Auditorium Theatre board member and Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2002-2015, was honored at this year’s gala with the Adler and Sullivan Award. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also issued a proclamation declaring November 3, 2018 to be “Mel Katten Day,” in recognition of Katten’s tireless work as a supporter of the arts, a community advocate and a philanthropist.

Call Ryan Gridley’s temporary absence from a Northwestern University men’s swimming and diving home meet last weekend an excused one.

Gridley, a 2018 New Trier High School graduate, escaped the TYR Invitational in Evanston to attend part of the girls swimming and diving state meet at Evanston Township High School on November 17.

Little sister and New Trier freshman Kaelyn Gridley, after all, was racing.

“I saw Ryan in the stands,” New Trier coach Mac Guy said. “That was cool.”

Also cool: Kaelyn Gridley burning chlorinated water en route to winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.68. Junior Maxine Parkinson, of eventual state champion Neuqua Valley High School, clocked a runner-up 1:03.43, just ahead of New Trier senior Kasey Venn’s third-place 1:03.61.

Smiles galore Athletes with disabilities elate all at state swimming meet

Tanna had her swimming baptism three years ago at the urging of her doctor.

“My doctor said, ‘Swimming would be good for you,’ ” Tanna recalled.

“I went with it.”

She sped to three other medal-worthy finishes at state last weekend. Tanna won the ‘A’ heat of the 100-yard breaststroke (2:09.39) and placed fifth overall in each of the 50 free (43.99) and 100 free (1:35.18) events.

“The noise, the camaraderie, everybody coming together, my teammates supporting me … I love everything about the atmosphere of this meet,” Tanna, still beaming after her final race, said.

New Trier High School juniors Sela Cornell and Alex Brander also hit the water in four events last weekend. Cornell finished runner-up twice, initially in the 50 free (30.48) and then in the 100 breaststroke (1:27.32). Brander placed fourth in the ‘B’ heat of the 100 breaststroke with a 2:17.04, which was nearly three seconds faster than her seed time in the event.

Cornell is now a three-year state vet, Brander a two-year racer at state.

“Both are pretty seasoned competitors,” Bean added. “What they like most about a meet like this is feeling they’re a part of a team.

Opportunities rock

A 7-year-old Hispanic girl from Highwood sees three young Caucasians in tutus. Her eyes widen. Her heart beats faster.

“That’s what I want to do,” she says. “I want to dance.”

The girl’s audience that day, some 10 years ago, was Alicia De La Cruz.

The girl’s wish spurred De La Cruz to act.

“Girls like her needed opportunities in our community,” De La Cruz, a native of Mexico and a Highland Park resident, recalls. “I approached dance studios. The most scholarships a studio could offer was five.

“I needed 15.”

De La Cruz turned to Highland Park High School as a potential provider of space for more than a handful of young dancers.

She contacted then HPHS Principal Dr. Thomas Koulentes, who saw to it that one room would be available on Saturdays.

“We thought 15 girls would show up,” De La Cruz says after having ordered coffee and a bagel with cream cheese at Country Kitchen in Highland Park. “Guess what?

Sixty girls, ages 5 to 10, showed up on each of the first three Saturdays. We started with two teachers.”

And that’s how De La Cruz’s Working Together organization was born.

Today?

Working Together does more than develop mostly Hispanic ballet dancers. Much more. It supports Hispanic families of Highwood and Highland Park with educational, cultural and recreational activities. The indefatigable and delightfully persistent De La Cruz, now 50, created opportunity after opportunity for budding hip-hop and folkloric dancers, swimmers, martial artists, guitarists, painters and robotics students. HPHS continues to teem with eager learners in several rooms on Saturdays. In 2010 a mother of a Working

Together student started teaching folkloric dance to Working Together youngsters at Trinity Episcopal Church in Highland Park.

Approximately 50 volunteer teachers inspire 125 children in the Working Together classes today.

An insurance issue surfaced every now and then, threatening some of De La Cruz’s ambitious plans for Working Together. But that never cratered De La Cruz’s appealing zeal. Dr. Koulentes rolled up his sleeves, made phone calls, sent emails.

The Highland Park Community Foundation helped. So did Family Service of Lake County.

Working Together began a partnership with The Art Center-Highland Park in mid-October.

“My organization owes so much to Dr. Koulentes,” says De La Cruz, adding former HPHS math teacher Luis Vazquez played a vital role by plugging Working Together and its mission to parents of Hispanic students. “Dr. Koulentes [now the principal at Libertyville High School] was amazing. He spoke Spanish, and he’d greet our students and their parents at Highland Park High School every Saturday. I can’t tell you how many times I’d get in touch with him and say, ‘I have an idea … .’

“He must have considered me his worst nightmare, I’m sure, for a while,” she adds with a laugh. “I would not go away. But he knew what our opportunities did for the kids. They empowered them, kept them busy, gave them confidence.”

A Working Together dancer’s brother offered to teach guitar lessons to students years ago. One problem, and it was a major one: Working Together had a budget of $0 and could not purchase guitars for students. The dancer’s brother conducted a fundraiser at his home, inviting

But he knew what our opportunities did for the kids. They empowered them, kept them busy, gave them confidence.

friends to listen to him perform. His friends requested songs. His friends donated money for each performance.

Problem solved.

“That young man,” De La Cruz says, “used those donations to buy three guitars for our kids on Saturdays.”

Former Working Together students are current Working Together volunteer teachers. A former student wants to be a music teacher because of his Working Together experiences; he is a freshman at a college in Wisconsin today.

“I want all of our students to attend college,” De La Cruz says.

De La Cruz — in her second year as director of client services/bilingual staff assistant at the Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic — attended a Catholic School while growing up in Mexico City before earning a degree in marketing in her native land. She met her future husband, Juan, when both worked for the same bank. They emigrated from Mexico to the United States 17 years ago.

They have a 9-year-old daughter, Alexi.

“I love my daughter and my 125 other ‘kids’ [Working Together students],” De La Cruz says.

“My husband has been so supportive of me and my craziness. In 2017 I got pneumonia three times, and after the third time, Juan said to me, ‘You’re trying to be Wonder Woman; slow down.’ But that’s hard for me to do.

“I have a lot of ideas.”

The City of Highland Park noticed De La Cruz’s productive ideas and super powers as a volunteer and recognized her with its Humanitarian of the Year award in 2016.

De La Cruz aims to earn a master’s degree in either business or social work.

“I joke with my daughter all the time, telling her I’ll go for my master’s while she takes undergrad classes,” De La Cruz says.
