As we get ready to celebrate the season of Thanksgiving and kick off the holidays, it’s also time to begin thinking about what we can do to help those less fortunate. The New Trier Township Food Pantry is hoping that you’ll think of its efforts on Giving Tuesday, November 27. Now in its seventh year, the global day of giving was created to officially launch the holiday season around the world and turn people’s thoughts to neighbors in need. Despite the prosperity of the area, New Trier Township Supervisor Alan Goldberg says the township food pantry has seen an increase in usage this year. “Although the economic times have improved, many of our elderly and disabled neighbors continue to struggle with food insecurity,” Goldberg says. “We hope community members will include our pantry in their holiday giving.” Established in 1965, the New Trier Township Food Pantry serves as a bridge between those who have the means to give and those who are in need. Today, it feeds nearly 250 people from 100 families each month. The company’s Winnetka storefront is part of a 2018 national pop-up campaign — to increase visibility and consignments — in more than a dozen cities. The North Shore Weekend asked LGS cofounders and North Shore natives Brielle Buchburg and Lindsay Segal (also a pair of New Trier High School graduates) and LGS CEO and Kenilworth resident Trish Lukasik about success, growth and consignment. TNSW: What social and economic forces are driving the growth of the luxury consignment market today? LGS: Today, luxury resale and recommerce is a $6 billion dollar market globally; the resale apparel market is growing 24 times faster than that of the total retail market. People want 24-hour access online, but they also want to see, touch and feel pre-owned items in person. Our omnichannel approach includes permanent stores, pop-up boutiques, a website and a personal styling team that allows us to scale our growth to match demand. Instagram, of course, is a huge driver for the luxury consignment market, as shoppers are introduced to new brands or fall in love with vintage or pre-owned pieces that are more attainable when purchased as pre-owned. TNSW: Your brick-and-mortar stores are in big cities, whereas your pop-up shops seem to be appearing in smaller towns. Tell us more about the strategy behind your national pop-up campaign. LGS: As we approach new markets, we look for places where demand for luxury goods may be high, but there isn’t necessarily tons of access. We also use our short-term pop-ups to test new markets. We’ve popped up everywhere from Atlanta to Los Angeles, and we have tested larger markets like Houston and smaller ones like Birmingham, Michigan, and Westfield, New Jersey. As [2019 nears], don’t expect us to pop up in New York City. We’ll be more focused on markets like Winnetka.

Paint the town … Rockwellian Highwood set to offer palette of activities at inaugural fete BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A festive event provided the inspiration for Celebrate Highwood’s holiday party theme this year. It all started at a tree lighting ceremony last year. People had gathered from across Highwood for the ceremony. Some of them had even brought homemade food for an impromptu potluck. “It seems very Norman Rockwell-ish when we’re all there,” Celebrate Highwood President Eric Falberg says. “People come from all around Highwood.” The tree lighting ceremony returns at an earlier date this holiday season. And on November 24, City Hall Park will play host to Highwood’s inaugural Norman Rockwell Holiday Celebration. The celebration is a collaboration between the Highwood Chamber of Commerce and Celebrate Highwood, a 501(c)(3) organization that plans community events throughout Highwood. “This is the first year we’re doing the Norman Rockwell focus,” Celebrate Highwood event promoter Ilyse Strongin says. “The whole idea is that the small Highwood community is such a tight-knit, family community.” The event will include a range of holiday activities. There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, roasted chestnuts, s’mores, music, pictures with Santa and a holiday potluck dinner. From 2-5 p.m., kids can enjoy the Family Cookie Walk in

downtown Highwood. For adults, there’s the “12 Drinks of Christmas” tour, a 12-stop list of holiday drinks at downtown restaurants and bars. Maps will be available at the Highwood Chamber of Commerce booth in City Hall Park. The City of Highwood booth will offer barbecued brats, hot dogs and more. “We’re inviting everyone to come out and be a part of this [celebration],” Strongin says. The Highwood Chamber of Commerce also will hold a holiday window-decorating contest. People can vote for the best window decorations at the Chamber of Commerce booth. The winner gets a free Highwood Chamber of Commerce membership. Also, non-perishable food will be collected for the Moraine Township Food Pantry. Items can be dropped off at City Hall Park. “It’s fun to just gather together and hang out in the cold,” Falberg says. “Celebrate Highwood is out there to create community through events. The community members get to know each other, and it becomes a safer place to live.” The holiday tree lighting has been going on for five years. With the Norman Rockwell Holiday Celebration, community leaders are encouraging residents to help launch another tradition. “If they really want to experience an oldfashioned holiday event, then they should come,” Falberg says.

Pretty fast in pink LFHS’s pink-socks-clad Schmitt posts darn good time at state cross country meet, takes silver BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Nate Schmitt dons hot pink socks for cross country races for a reason. But it has nothing to do with fashion. “Got my first pair at a summer running camp,” the Lake Forest High School junior says. “The socks were a giveaway item. I thought they would be good for me to wear because I have an averagelooking face and the bright color would help distinguish me from all of the other runners in a race. “People,” he adds, “wouldn’t have to ask, ‘Where’s Nate?’ They would just have to look down and look for my pink socks.” His garish foot garments weren’t necessary at the Class 2A boys cross country state meet around Detweiller Park in Peoria on November 3. The 5-foot-10, 135-pound Schmitt got off to a waybetter-than-average start, led for about the first half of the three-mile test and ended up runner-up with a time of 14:47.96. You could not miss him. “I do like to do all I can to get out in front and stay in front for as long as possible,” says Schmitt, who bowed only to eventual winner Mathias Powell (14:31.77), a senior from Mahomet-Seymour High School. “Pace myself? Never. I race like I race because I’m terrified — terrified of being caught or getting swallowed up by a lot of runners in the back and not being able to recover.” Schmitt became only the fourth Scout in program history to earn a top-five finish at state. Former LFHS star Jim Gibson entered the chute in third place at the AA meet in 1984 and won the race in ’85; Ryan Stoll silvered at the AA state meet in ’81; and Billy Bund hustled to a fifth-place showing at the 3A state meet in 2012. “Such a competitive racer, a focused kid and an athlete who trains incredibly hard,” Scouts boys cross country coach Matt Jerina says of Schmitt, who missed qualifying for state last fall by 3 seconds. “He’s a very aggressive runner … and a great sportsman. If he’s not in the lead in a race, he’s a hunter, always the hunter. “Before the race at state, my assistant [ Jake Buddell] and I talked with Nate. It was evident, to both of us, that he had the focus he needed to have for a big race. He was ready. He went out there and did his thing.” Schmitt had never battled against a field of runners at Detweiller Park before November 3. But he and his father, Jeff, drove 190 miles to the park the day after Nate had claimed the Antioch Regional championship with a time of 15:47 on October 21. “I ran around the Detweiller course three times,” Schmitt, the reigning North Suburban Conference champion and a 3200-meter racer in track and field, says. “Wanted to figure it out. absolutely gliding.” Schmitt’s choice of socks on each Race Day isn’t the only decision that separates him from packs of prep runners. He also opts to shake the hands of as many fellow racers as possible before the start of races. “I started doing that in track, before a 3200 race [two springs ago],” the Lake Bluff resident says. “I was nervous that day, and I figured shaking hands would lighten the mood and make me less nervous.” But Schmitt does more than just press the flesh (or bump fists) before he and the entrants in his races hear the starter’s gun. “Nate is wishing them luck and telling them, ‘I hope you have a good race,’ ” says Peter Elliott, a Lake Forest High School sophomore cross country runner. “He’s a great guy, a fun guy to be around. Nate truly enjoys cross country and considers it a team sport as much as he considers it an individual sport. In races he’s all business, gets serious right away, and it doesn’t take long for anybody to realize, ‘This kid is for real.’ “Nate,” he adds, “is not that tall, but he runs like a gazelle and has big, long strides. He attacks the ground. He’s got running form down to a science. You can tell he’s worked — worked hard — on his form. The best runners are efficient runners; Nate is efficient.” Nate Schmitt was a middle school basketball and soccer player in Colorado before realizing (after receiving some timely advice from his mother with a running background, Amy) that Nate Schmitt and cross country could very well end up being a fruitful match made along a trail in a forest preserve. “I didn’t have a future in basketball,” recalls, Schmitt, who moved to Lake Bluff with his family in the middle of his freshman year (2016-17). “Basketball guys all around me were growing, becoming 6-foot-7; I was not. I actually hated running at an early age, probably because my sister, Caitlin [now at the Naval Academy in Maryland], was so good at it. My mom told me, ‘You don’t have to be really into running, but give it a try.’ I ran in the fall [at Evergreen High School in Colorado], and then I thought, ‘This isn’t terrible.’ ” Schmitt ran only one under-level race at EHS because the time he had clocked in it earned him a spot on varsity. His reaction to the promotion? “Stoked,” he says. Notable: Lake Forest High School’s boys cross country team placed 13th (297) at the Class 2A state meet in Peoria on November 3. The Scouts’ Nos. 2-7 runners were senior Ben Rosa (40th place, 15:36.42), sophomore Kaleb Whiteside (53rd, 15:45.98), senior Elijah Fietsam (135th, 16:26.97), sophomore Casey Hippel (166th, 16:55.5), sophomore Nicholas Tegel (177th, 17:07.61) and junior Ethan Lane (198th, 17:34.05). Loyola Academy football doubters populated the prep football landscape in late September. The Ramblers had lost their third games in six weeks, a 28-27 home setback to Montini. “They were out there, definitely,” Loyola Academy senior defensive lineman Conor Hough recalled last weekend. “But all were outside our group.” His group won its sixth straight game on November 10, stymieing host Maine South 17-0 in a Class 8A state quarterfinal in chilly, sunny Park Ridge. LA (9-3) limited Maine South to 71 total yards, including a scant 24 via rushing. Any questions today, doubters? Anybody? Didn’t think so. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Hough had two of the Ramblers’ four sacks for a combined loss of 22 yards. Senior lineman Edward Eastman and senior linebacker Armoni Dixon had the other sacks. “Long, determined. Smart kid, great kid,” LA football coach John Holecek said of Hough, a formidable part of a first-team defense that had also blanked the opposition in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Decades ago former Lake Forest High School swimming coach Lea Maurer — the backstroke leg of Team USA’s women’s gold medal 400-meter relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain — compared the atmosphere inside the Olympic venue to that of the one at a Illinois High School Association swimming and diving state meet. It wasn’t even close, intensity-wise. The energy and decibel levels at the prep natatoriums (either at Evanston Township High School or at New Trier High School) easily topped the vibe Maurer had felt in Barcelona. North Shore swimmers and divers will vie for medals and absorb the pulsating climate at this weekend’s (November 16-17) girls state meet at ETHS. New Trier’s crew captured the team title (304 points) and qualified a slew of state entrants, including all three relays, at the Glenbrook North sectional meet on November 10. Sandy Greiner was 8 years old, maybe 9, when she first accompanied her mother, Virginia, on a round of visits to homes in the Milwaukee area. Virginia was a kindergarten teacher who also cared deeply about her students’ lives outside the classroom. “My mom taught kids, mostly immigrants, who were underserved in the community,” says Greiner, a Wilmette resident since 1999. “She wanted to check in with them, see how they were doing. She was, essentially, also a social worker who was kind and generous. We went to houses with empty refrigerators. We entered houses without furniture, without TVs. “I saw poverty, up close, at a young age.” What the 55-year-old mother of three (Will, Erika and Max) sees today: families fraying because of the pervasiveness of opioid addiction and dependence. Our country is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic. For every major disease in this country, there is one well-funded national organization. But a well-funded national organization for addiction does not exist. Yet. Greiner and her husband, Lars, cochaired Shatterproof ’s inaugural Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run in Chicago last month. Shatterproof — founded by former hotel executive Gary Mendell after his son Brian died by suicide following a struggle with addiction and its oppressive stigma in 2011 — is a New York-based nonprofit/advocacy group dedicated to ending the devastation addiction causes families and calling for a radical transformation of addiction treatment. The unfettered prescribing of pain medications continues to cause, well, pain. For sufferers. For sufferers’ loved ones and friends. Shatterproof ’s ultimate mission is to ensure every American with a substance use disorder has access to treatment that’s based on proven research. Approximately 1,200 people either walked or ran at the Shatterproof event, which raised $195,000. “Many of the Rise Up Against Addiction participants felt, for the first time, that addiction was recognized as a disease and that the medical community was there to support them,” says Greiner, who had ordered a cup of coffee and a bowl of tomato soup at Panera Bread in Wilmette before my arrival. “There’s an urgent need in this country to treat addiction, a chronic disease, like a … chronic disease.

Gary Mendell is an incredible person and a creative problem solver, with outstanding business acumen. His Shatterproof organization provides evidence-based resources to support prevention, treatment and recovery. Laws are changing in states, and representatives from insurance companies are finally sitting in the same room and discussing the epidemic, addressing the epidemic. “All kinds of companies,” she adds, “are waking up to the cost of lost productivity due to their employees’ addictions to opioids.” Lars Greiner, a financial advisor, first met Gary Mendell more than four years ago and introduced him to former Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Lee Daniels and former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson. Good people to know, resourceful sources, since Shatterproof takes on federal and state advocacy battles. Mendell’s son lost his battle with addiction and its attendant stigma at the age of 25. Marijuana use in Brian Mendell’s teenage years led to harder drugs and eight treatment programs and therapies. None followed evidence-backed protocols, backed by research. Brian visited his father at home in the summer of 2011. They sat and talked on the back porch. W hat Brian said then: “Dad, 300 years ago they burned women on stakes in Salem, Massachusetts, because they thought they were witches. Later they learned they weren’t and stopped. Someday, people will realize that I am not a bad person. That I have a disease and I am trying my hardest.”

Gary Mendell received a phone call four months later in the middle of the night. His 25-year-old son — who hadn’t used a substance in 13 months — was dead. The weight of addiction had become too heavy to handle. The stigma of addiction? Maybe heavier. Research exists that could have

saved Brian and countless others like him, Gary Wendell insists. “But,” the website shatterproof.org claims, “[research] is not being implemented throughout communities and the healthcare system.”

All kinds of companies are waking up to the cost of lost productivity due to their employees’ addictions to opioids.

Sandy Greiner, who has an extensive background in dance and fitness, earned a B.S. degree in psychology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was the director and creator of Healthy Expectations, Inc. in Chicago and the business development manager at Rush Corporate Health Center before opening her Pilates studio in Northfield 15 years ago. She also served, while working in Chicago, as a volunteer for the Worksite Wellness Council of Illinois. In college Greiner visited lonely, forgotten patients in a Wisconsin hospital as a volunteer in the 1980s, no doubt delighting her proud, always-puts-others-first mother (who died in 2010). One patient had suffered burns all over his body after a motorcycle accident. Sandy talked. Sandy listened. Sandy’s weekly presence was a salve for the ailing man. After last month’s Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run, Greiner received a photo of the back of a participant’s T-shirt. Greiner finds it on her phone and shows it to me. The poignant message on the T-shirt: Little brother, you no longer have a secret, you have a story, and I will be your voice. I read it. I read it again. Greiner’s eyes turn glassy.
