When Chicagoans think of poverty, they often look south to crime-ridden city neigh-
borhoods. Very rarely do folks look north to suburban Lake County, an area many Chicago residents associate with large waterfront estates, country clubs and horse farms of Highland Park, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.
But Lake County is also home to North Chicago, a city that borders affluent Lake Bluff but stands in stark contrast to its wealthy, southern neighbor.

underfunded communities,” Grumhaus says. “We’re looking to leverage as much money and as many resources as possible and make those physical assets places where kids and communities can come to learn and grow. NCCP also provides educational enrichment programs for District 187 parents and families, as well as food pantries and student-care closets. In 2017 NCCP built a health care center inside North Chicago Community High School, a service it hopes to provide to more D187 schools in the coming years. More than thousand students participated in enlightening trips to colleges, corporations, art galleries and theatrical performances through NCCP in the 2017-18 academic year. According to Grumhaus, the success of the Community School model depends on the broader community, which must provide both volunteers and resources to make the model work. Just last year, NCCP collaborated with more than 40 area organizations, including local churches, high schools, colleges, and community centers, as well as with AbbVie, a North Chicago pharmaceutics company.
Ten years ago, concerned by the widening disparities between Lake County’s most wealthy and most impoverished communities, Lake Forest resident Jennifer Grumhaus left a career in finance to help start North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP), a nonprofit founded with $20,000 seed money from the Lake Forest-based Gorter Family Foundation. NCCP’s motto became “Look North,” as the organization began working to draw attention to Chicago’s growing suburban poverty. “Everyone thinks of Lake County as the North Shore, but in truth, Lake County is a barbell of haves and have-nots, “ says Grumhaus, who serves as executive director of NCCP. “The demographics of our county have shifted dramatically over the past 10 years. Our Hispanic population is growing … our low-income population is growing.” The NCCP feels strongly that North Chicago public school children should benefit from the same enrichment programs, one-to-one tutoring and family engagement activities available to many public school kids in Lake Forest. “There are beautiful, gifted, amazing, talented children everywhere,” Grumhaus says. “We believe education is the game changer; if you can provide young people with an education, they can create their own path.” Today, with an annual budget of roughly $2.2 million, NCCP employs 40 staff and works with 3,000 volunteers to administer a full roster of lunchtime, after school, weekend and summer enrichment programs for K-12 students in North Chicago Community Unit School District 187’s ten public schools. According to Grumhaus, NCCP’s approach to education follows the Community School model being used by organizations in other parts of the state. A community school, says Grumhaus, focuses on the whole child by providing students and their families with academic and health/social services programming to complement and enhance student learning. “Schools are usually a great physical asset in Jennifer Grumhaus PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER
Three years ago, NCCP felt it had enough hard data to start measuring the impact of its programs within District 187. Sure enough, the news was good. Student attendance among participants in its programs had increased; NCCP students were meeting growth targets on standardized tests; and teachers in NCCP schools were reporting fewer behavioral problems. Nearly a decade after its formation, NCCP has become a friendly fixture in the community. For many young North Chicago public school students, NCCP has become a constant in their lives — on any given day, there may be as many as 50-100
NCCP volunteers working inside D187 schools. “I think one of the reasons the impact of our organization is so high is because we’ve been there, “ Grumhaus says. “We’ve had principals and superintendents change. We have huge teacher attrition, and we have a very transient family population. “But what’s been there every day, for the past 10 years,” she adds, “is North Chicago Community Partners.” For more information, visit www.northchicagocommunitypartners.org

According to Syrek, New Trier’s four AAHSFF films began as class projects tied to the Media, Speech and Theater Department, where students have the option of the taking Film I, II, and III during their tenure at the school. Syrek says student filmmakers typically serve as writers, directors and editors of their own films, often shooting their movies on campus with the help of peers. “These kids are already serious filmmakers,” Syrek says. “Many are applying to some of the top film schools in the country.” A total of eleven New Trier film students, ranging in class year from sophomore to senior, traveled to New York for the three-day festival, which included screenings of top high school films; a film and media arts college fair; panel discussions and workshops; and the Teen Indie Awards Show, a red-carpet event widely regarded as the Oscars for high school students. Students also went on an NBC studio tour during the trip, followed by a meeting with New Trier alumnus Arthur Meyer (’02), a supervising

writer at the network’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Meyer was a New Trier theatre student who regularly performed with No Questions Asked, the high school’s short-form improvisation troupe. Meyer spoke to students about his experiences in high school and college, and how they led to his television career. “Our [students] represented the best of New Trier throughout the weekend via their professionalism, support of fellow peers, enthusiasm towards attending panels and workshops, as well as networking with other filmmakers from schools around the country,“ Syrek says, adding this year marked the third time NTHS student films had been selected for the premier festival. “Our long-term goal,” Syrek says, “is to continue to submit and have multiple films selected annually. There are specific awards presented at the Teen Indies Awards Ceremony that come with scholarship money, and my goal is for our students to be nominated in these categories, win, and receive the support they deserve to pursue their filmmaking dreams.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Jack Burke was stumped. The Loyola Academy senior defensive back had just named his five younger sisters for an inquisitor last weekend in Wilmette. His essay for a college application, after all, was all about his life as a big brother to Annabelle, Catherine, Emma, Nora and Lily. want to say an incorrect age,” a smiling, headshaking Burke said after he and the rest of the Ramblers dismissed visiting Oswego High School 22-0 in a second-round Class 8A football playoff game November 3. “I’m not always the best big brother, but I try to be. My sisters mean a lot to me; family means a lot to me.” Burke, of Glenview, had almost as many pass break ups against the third-seeded Panthers as he has sisters and intercepted a pass with 4:32 left in the fourth quarter. His other pick this season came in Week 1, back in late August. The win advanced 19th-seeded Loyola Academy (8-3) to a road quarterfinal date with sixthseeded Maine South November 10 at 1 p.m. The football powerhouses last met in a playoff game in the 8A championship game in 2016, with Maine South winning 27-17 in Champaign. LA routed Maine South 35-0 in a state quarterfinal in 2013. “Not many missed tackles,” Ramblers coach John Holecek said of his club’s impressive defensive effort last weekend versus the undefeated Southwest Prairie Conference champion. “We did a good job against their running game, and

that made them focus on the pass.” Oswego’s primary receiving threat was wideout Jamal Fomby Jr., a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior. “Super strong, the best hands. A stud, for sure,” said Burke, sounding a lot like ESPN football analyst Mel Kiper Jr. does before an NFL Draft. But Burke and fellow DBs Michael Byrne, Jake Gonzalez and Nick Pomey, along with LA’s formidable pass rush, prevented Fomby Jr. and Co. from entering any end zone. Gonzalez returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown with 50 seconds left in the third quarter, scoring the final points of the game in LA’s fifth straight victory. Burke could have had another interception had he not been aware of the situation on a fourthand-6 play from LA’s 46-yard line in the third quarter. The Our Lady of Perpetual Help School product batted down a heave from Panthers senior quarterback Noah Parker instead of grabbing the pop-up-to-center-field-like toss. The move ensured LA would start its next pos-

Loyola Academy’s girls volleyball team goes a stirring 4-1 in postseason play — a year after falling in the first round BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
season ended at the Warren Supersectional in Gurnee November 2. Prairie Ridge, seeded No. 1 in the Class 4A Grayslake Central Sectional, defeated LA 29-27, 25-14 to notch its third Final Four appearance in program history. LA had lost a three-setter to Wheeling High School in the first round of the state playoffs last fall. The first set of the supersectional last weekend had a little bit of everything, from lengthy, gripping points to shaky serving (Prairie Ridge, with five errors) to match points saved by both squads. LA led 25-24 and 27-26. Ramblers senior middle blocker Elizabeth Ford came up with a clutch kill to knot it a 26, and another superb Walker dig — this one featuring a dive — highlighted the set’s 53rd point. LA, seeded first in its sectional, finished with a 30-9 record. Its deep postseason cut into Martinez’s basketball preseason. A St. Louis University basketball recruit and one of the best hoopsters in the state, the 5-foot-10 Chicagoan had to miss three days of basketball tryouts (she’ll make the team) and two practices. “I am so proud of our team and how far we got in the postseason,” Martinez said. “We wanted to make a mark as a volleyball program; we did that. I love my teammates, love them all. “They’re my sisters.”

Pancoe scales heights, stays grounded BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Alex Pancoe was on Snowmass Mountain in Colorado in July, alone, having lost a lot of blood after slipping — only two feet but a sudden two feet — and injuring his right leg on a jagged rock during a training climb. “I was mad,” the 32-year-old Pancoe, a 2004 Highland Park High School graduate and a financial advisor, recalls on an October morning at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Wilmette. “Mad at the rock. “I wanted to kick it.” He waited to be rescued instead. And suffered. More blood exited his body. Hope? It dwindled by the minute, by the second. Pancoe then reached for his technology. “I videotaped a goodbye message for my family and friends,” he says. “That was it, I thought. I was prepared to die on that mountain.” The High-Altitude Army National Guard, a unit based in Gypsum, Colorado, saved Pancoe. The rescue mission enabled Pancoe to continue his remarkable quest to complete the Explorers Grand Slam — a daunting set of challenges that

requires the adventurer to climb the Seven Summits (the highest mountain on each of the seven continents) and ski traverse the North Pole and the South Pole. Pancoe, who lives in Chicago, began ascending Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea last week. Success there would leave him only two legs shy of the Slam. Next up: skiing across the South Pole in December, followed by scaling Mount Everest next April or May. Only 15 Americans have achieved the Explorers Grand Slam. The number of Chicagoans among that group: exactly zero. Pancoe figures, after two years of swinging for the Slam, he had spent 147 nights (through October 10) in a tent in mostly frigid spots all over the world. “Before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro [in 2016], I was going through an existential crisis,” Pancoe, a 2009 Northwestern University graduate with a degree in political science, admits. “I felt unsatisfied. I went on a safari in Africa before the climb. My

thinking about the meaning of success started to change at that point. My definition of success in the past was results-based. Now? It’s all about effort. Success to me, right now, is pushing yourself, daring yourself to do things you originally thought were impossible, all while being out of your comfort zone. “I’m no longer scared of failing. I’m not scared of anything.” He had a health scare in 2005, between his freshman and sophomore years at Northwestern. His headaches had graduated from pounding to debilitating, with some of them causing temporary paralysis. His mother, Mariann, told him to get an MRI. The MRI revealed a benign tumor in the back of his brain. It was removed at Children’s Memorial Hospital, now named Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. “That’s an incredible hospital,” Pancoe says. “The people there, the medical personnel there … all are just fantastic. Lurie’s doesn’t just treat the patients; it also treats the family of the patients, because a cancer diagnosis impacts everybody in a family, forces all of its members to deal with an upheaval. There’s a Make-A-Wish-like atmosphere going on inside Lurie’s, pretty much daily. Celebrities and famous athletes constantly visit the young cancer patients there.” Chicago Cubs first baseman and cancer sur vivor Anthony Rizzo, whose number of visits to patients at Lurie’s each summer nearly matches his typical RBI total in a season, first met huge Cubs fan Pancoe at Wrigley Field one day. R i z z o, to Pancoe: “You’re the mountain guy, right?” R i g h t . Mountain Guy Pancoe had opted to partner his adventurous side with his philanthropic and forever-grateful sides shortly after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Now a Lurie’s foundation board member, he dedicates each of his climbs to a current or former Lurie’s
patient and, through his website (peaksofmind. com), has raised more than $400,000 of his goal of $1 million for pediatric brain tumor research. A Rizzo-signed 2016 World Series baseball accompanied Pancoe on Pancoe’s summit of the sixth-highest mountain (26,864 feet above sea level) in the world, Cho Oyu in Tibet, in late September. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder smiled

and held the ball at the apex of Cho Oyu, while posing for a photo, and later gave the ball to a Lurie’s patient. Raised primarily by Mariann and his grandparents, former Northwestern math professor Arthur Pancoe and the late Gladys Pancoe, Alex has certainly come a long way — and reached astounding heights — since his days as a “nerdy, video-games kid” at HPHS. Another influential man in his life has been former Northwestern University President Henry Bienen. “With the advice he’s given me, along with the support I’ve received from him all these years, I’ve been incredibly fortunate,” Pancoe says of Bienen, who served as NU’s president from 1995-2009. “Huge part of my life. My grandfather is a great man, a workaholic and the most philanthropic man I know. My mom? She has tremendous enthusiasm, but she does get quite nervous whenever I climb.” Hours before ordering coffee, a large glass of grapefruit juice, the Santa Fe omelet and a side of pancakes, Pancoe had started (at 5 a.m.) a 10K on a treadmill. Training. The financial advisor/adventurer is always training for the next climb, the next opportunity to raise money, the next day he gets to make a Lurie’s patient’s day. He plans to hit the weights for an upper-body workout in the afternoon. “We live in a world, I’ve discovered, where you don’t need a lot of things you think you need,” Pancoe says. “Being successful is important, yes, because it gives you freedom. But I’ve been in places all over the world, in impoverished areas, in harsh environments, where you can sit down with others, drink a 50-cent beer and still have a great time. “One time, after a climb, after going without a shower for weeks, I remember thinking the greatest single thing in the world at the time was being able to take a sip of Coco-Cola.” Cheers, Alexander Pancoe.
