Lake Forest’s Diane Quon rekindles her love of the big screen BY DAVID RUTTER & ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
In 1996, Diane Quon was vice president of marketing at Paramount Pictures. Hollywood had been her life for 17 years — starting with four years at NBC after getting her master’s degree at the University of Southern California. But after experiencing health scares, she decided to choose a new direction. “It was time to make a change,” she says. She was a Chicago kid at heart, so when her husband, David, received a job opportunity in Chicago, she moved back to her hometown with David and their four children. They settled in Lake Forest, where she focused on raising her children. But like all choices in life, the shift was complicated. She may have left Hollywood, but her love for film never quite left her. Now she’s back — pursuing her dream. In the last three years, Quon has been producing documentary films under the creative umbrella of the Chicago documentary collective, Kartemquin Films, known for its awardwinning social justice films. “If you’re going to spend years working on a

Timmey Challenger’s legacy at WCH lives on today; her daughter, Annie Challenger, a resident of Northfield, is both a Woman’s Board member and co-chair of the 2018 A+M Show. “My parents loved this show,” Annie says. ‘They were avid collectors and brought items home from their travels abroad. It was something they did together.” The Challenger family’s outplacement company, Challenger Gray & Christmas, Inc., joins Lincoln Experience as a sponsor of the 2018 A+M Show, along with Social Media underwriter Compass Real Estate and North Shore Community Bank, the sponsor of the Speaker Event November 2. Among the show’s scheduled weekend events is a breakfast on November 2, featuring speaker Carla McDonald — founder and editor in chief of The Salonniere — who joins renowned designers Alessandra Branca and Michael Devine. McDonald plans to share her pro tips on home entertaining. On the morning of November 3, Julia Buckingham, a veteran A+M Show speaker, will take the stage to discuss her signature Modernique decorating aesthetic, a style that blends pieces from different price points and eras. “Julia is an expert at mixing contemporary pieces with the old family pieces her clients already own,” Monnig says. As in years past, A+M Show shoppers will have access to free design advice: all featured speakers will walk the show prior to their appearance, tagging “must-have” recommended items with a yellow star. “Our speakers’ picks are typically the first to sell,” Monnig says. “I recommend shopping early.”

During the three-day 2018 A+M Show, 43 Antiques Council-vetted dealers will set up shop inside WCH, transforming the 107-year old building into a bustling treasure trove of fine art, home furnishings, jewelry and vintage clothing. This year, a sizable collection of new dealers joins a long list of returning dealers like Julie Harris, Elliott & Elliott and Finnegan Gallery. More than 1,000 collectors, designers and shoppers are expected to attend the A+M Show Weekend as well as a sneak-peak Preview Party scheduled for the evening of November 1. The A+M Preview Party is both a fundraiser for WCH and a chance for the show’s donors and devotees to walk the show while enjoying cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. “That first night is typically when you spot the best finds,” 2018 A+M Show Co-chair Cindy Monnig says. As a corporate underwriter for the Preview Party, Lincoln Experience will showcase two of its 2019 car models on Lincoln Avenue, just outside the entrance to WCH, including the popular Lincoln Navigator and newly launched Lincoln Nautilus. “It’s a perfect partnership,” Monnig says. “Lincoln on Lincoln.” Produced each year by WCH’s Woman’s Board, the Antiques + Modernism Show has a long, storied history dating back more than 60 years. DIFFERENCE MAKER Cont. from PG 1 film, and often not making much money, then you want to make films that make a difference,” she says. Quon has one film currently in distribution and two more in post-production. Her first feature length documentary — Minding The Gap — is a coming of age story about three skateboarders from Rockford, all escaping complicated families. Directed by first-time director Bing Liu, the film had its premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking. “In the indie film world, screening at Sundance gives you unbelievable credibility and exposure. We felt so lucky to be there,” Quon says. Since Sundance, Minding the Gap has been picked up as a Hulu Original, screened at more than 100 festivals in the United States and throughout the world, had a short theatrical run in major markets and will be broadcast on PBS in early 2019. Quon’s professional and artistic quest has a clear path now, but the beginning of that trip was muddied and painful. Nine years ago, Quon lost her son, Chris, when he was only 22. The pain of his death had left her nearly inconsolable. In 2014, a friend — who knew of Quon’s love of film — invited her and convinced her to attend Sundance. It was there that Quon fell in love with documentaries and saw the power of storytelling to make a difference. She went home determined to make a documentary.

and the domestic internment of Japanese Americans. Ford’s novel was released in 2009, spent 130 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold more than two million books worldwide. It still sells some 50,000 copies every year. When taking on Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Quon vowed to honor Ford’s vision — that the roles of Chinese Americans and Japanese Americans be played by Asian actors. “Growing up, it had always struck me that Asian Americans were rarely seen on the screen, especially in any leading roles,” Quon says. “I realized that you can sit back and be angry about it, or you can try to do something to change that.” Quon is now on a mission with Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. “The book,” she says, “is such a wonderful reminder that no matter what background we come from, we share so many more similarities than differences. I want people to come out of the film appreciating a great, universal story — a story that anyone who has fallen in love will enjoy. I know making this film is not going to be easy, and it may not even happen, but at least I’ll know I had tried.” Gorton Community Center is proud to present two showings of Minding the Gap, on October 19, in the John and Nancy Hughes Theater. The film will be shown at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Quon will host a question-and-answer session following the 7 p.m. screening. To purchase tickets online, please visit gortoncenter.org. Administrators at Lake Bluff Elementary School plan to continue to incorporate the event into the second-grade curriculum. Parent Teacher Organization member Laine Bennett, who has a second grader at the elementary school, followed the actors’ lead and dressed up for the day. But Halloween did not arrive early for just one parent. “Other parents dressed up, too,” Bennett says. Time Travelers could not have been revived fully and successfully without help from LFHS Theater Director Joe Pulio and his enthusiastic cast. His actors entertained and educated in four skits. Parents had acted for the second-graders in previous Time Travelers. “It was a great opportunity to bring the community and the school together to educate the kids,” Pulio says. “They gave us a couple skits that
had scripts, but my students also did some improv.” LFHS launched its new theater program last year. As the four moms spearheading the effort to bring back Time Travelers tried to figure out how to do so, they had heard about the high school’s acting classes. So they met with students from Pulio’s Theatre II and Theatre III classes and discussed the premise of each skit. “They were thrilled to help,” Pulio says. “Some of them had attended the elementary school, so they were excited about it.” Bennett says by the time they finished planning the event, there were a lot of people involved. Their hope was twofold — raise awareness about the arts and educate the kids about Lake Bluff ’s history. “I love that these high school students were so excited to be a part of this and help educate others about a community’s history in a fun way,” Morse says.

Keeping Highland Park beautiful Collective effort from students, Rotary Club erases eyesores BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Highland Park City Manager Ghida Neukirch found part of a discarded shopping cart last month — and it wasn’t anywhere near a store. The official joined about 80 Highland Park High School students on a Saturday to clean up stretches of the city’s beaches, bluffs and ravines. On September 29 they collected trash at Ravine Drive Beach and Millard Park to complete a Rotary Interact Club service project. “We are passionate about serving our community and helping others,” Neukirch says. “The service project was an excellent opportunity to reinforce the importance of keeping our community and our world clean. It’s a shame that individuals discard bottles, cans, paper, plastic and other items without regard to the damage they are causing our environment.” The teenagers worked with adults from the Rotary Club of Highland Park, which sponsors the high school’s Interact Club, to rid precious North Shore areas of litter. The strangest piece of litter might have been the partial shopping cart Neukirch discovered. “I met new people and had a ton of fun,” the city manager says. Most fun was “getting together with Rotarians, Interact Club members, park district employees and family members for a common good.” Rotary Club member Len Tenner praises the park district’s perennial commitment to keeping the beaches clean. “We retrieved the hard-to-get items; there weren’t a lot of them,” Tanner says. Bay says it wasn’t difficult to convince his classmates to show up, because the Rotary Board was persuasive when talking about service projects. The students’ excitement was contagious, he adds. “We are thankful to have that many young individuals who want to make a difference by volunteering,” Nieto says. “I think the students took away an experience where they could bond with their peers, build relationships and have fun doing something they wouldn’t typically agree to do.”

LIGHT THE NIGHT Annual walk for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society raises funds for cures this weekend BY DONALD LIEBENSON THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
This weekend the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society LLS will hold its annual Light the Night walk in Glenview to raise money for research to find blood cancer cures. The event—held Sunday, Oct. 21—will be somewhat bittersweet for Glencoe resident Jaime Sierens, 17. She has been attending the Light the Night walk with her family for most of her life since the diagnosis in 2006 of her then two-year-old sister Kendall with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. But this walk will be her last as co-president of Find a Cure, a service board she founded as a freshman at New Trier High School. Now a graduating senior, she is planning to start a branch of Find a Cure at college if such an organization does not already exist. “I noticed when I went to LLS events that there were no clubs that directly supported blood cancers [that engaged high school students],” she says. “I wanted to bring more young people into the LLS community.” Find a Cure originally had just over 10 members. It now counts 75, mostly New Trier and Loyola Academy students. It has raised $10,000 toward blood cancer research, Sierens says. Monthly meetings are devoted primarily to brainstorming fundraising initiatives, including food events at local restaurants, Skate to Donate at Glencoe’s Watts Ice Center and the organization’s annual car wash held

in September. At this year’s car wash, All-Pro outside linebacker Khalil Mack of the Chicago Bears made a generous donation, Sierens said. The organization is also focused on awareness and advocacy. “We have guest speakers share their
stories,” she says. “Last year a survivor came in and told us about his treatment and pathway to recovery, and how helpful LLS was in the process.” Light the Night is “a mandatory event” for Find a Cure members. “Our whole club goes,” Sierens
says. “We either walk or stand at certain points along the route to cheer walkers on.” Roughly 1 million people participate in 150 Light the Night walks across the country, according to the LLS website. Survivors carry white lanterns. “It’s a great way to see the community come together,” Sierens reflects. “Everyone is touched by cancer in some ways. It’s a beautiful thing to see the lanterns glowing at night.” Sierens was 5 when Kendall was rushed on multiple occasions by ambulance to Lurie Children’s Hospital. Her sister was in an out of the hospital during the next three years undergoing a rigorous protocol of chemotherapy, spinal taps and other intense medications. The family credits LLS’ Chicago branch with helping it navigate the challenges of dealing with Kendall’s medical crisis and introducing them to the cancer patient and advocacy community. Kendall has been in remission for 12 years. She is a freshman at New Trier and plays soccer. She, too, is a Find a Cure member. “She is always busy,” Sierens says. Jamie Sierens is confident that Find a Cure will continue after she graduates. “It’s a fun experience,” she says. “It’s very teamoriented; everyone’s opinions are heard. We’re able to get things done.” For more information about the Find a Cure, visit https://events.lls.org/il/FindaCure2018. East Elm Wine Walk Photography by Larry Miller
The merchants on East Elm Street in Winnetka hosted the fourth annual East Elm Wine Walk benefitting Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois in late September. The nearly 145 people in attendance enjoyed sipping fine wine from the Wilmette Wine Cellar, tasting light bites generously provided by local restaurants at each stop and listening to live music. The event raised $8,000.

Backbone boys De Filippis, Akintade fused forces for Lake Forest High School’s soccer team BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Lake Forest High School boys soccer coach Rob Parry found some solace after a tough playoff loss last weekend on the home pitch. “The spine of our team returns next year, and our lower-level teams had good seasons,” Parry said minutes after addressing his Scouts following a 1-0 setback to visiting Palatine High School in a Class 3A Libertyville Regional opener October 13. Two of the varsity’s sturdy “vertebrae” are juniors Oliver Akintade and Nico De Filippis. De Filippis paced the Scouts in goals (8) this fall, including two in a 2-2 tie against host Stevenson High School on October 4, and both flew around as consistent, dangerous threats. “Two of the most technically talented players we’ve had in a long, long time, and both are super quiet — Oliver slightly louder than Nico is,” Parry noted. “So skilled, both of them. Both
“Both can turn on a sixpence, or, as guys like to say today, ‘They can break ankles.’ ”
OLIVER’S GARDEN: Lake Forest High School junior midfielder Oliver Akintade, seen here in a match against Stevenson this fall, also excels off the soccer turf — as a swimmer.
are good at distributing, finding the open teammates ahead of them. “Both,” he added, “can turn on a sixpence, or, as guys like to say today, ‘They can break ankles.’ ” Palatine’s Pirates, seeded 17th in the Class 3A Barrington Sectional, snapped a 0-0 tie early in their playoff match against No. 16 LFHS last weekend. Akintade, a midfielder, fed a couple of spot-on passes to his forwards in the second half. De Filippis, an effective midfielder/forward, kept Palatine’s backs and keeper on high alert for most of the 80 minutes. “He’s very gifted, technically, and he never stops working hard,” Akintade said of De Filippis. “Nico knows his way around the field, knows where to be and when to be there.” Akintade needed only a little more than five seconds to come up with his favorite Nico De Filippis moment in 2018. The set-up: Deerfield match. Late. Scoreless. De Filippis then scored what would be the lone goal of the contest, with between 10-15 minutes left in the second half. “And he scored it from a tight angle,” Akin- ‘DE’ MAN: Lake Forest High School junior midfielder/forward Nico De Filippis led the Scouts in goals (8) this fall. tade recalled. “Great goal.” Akintade’s dribbling skills impress De Filippis. “Oliver is fast, and he’s good at beating people off the dribble,” said De Filippis, a firstyear high school player after having devoted the past two autumns to battle for Sockers FC teams. Akintade competed for LFHS for a second season in ’18. He played club soccer for the Chicago Magic in the fall of his freshman year; his previous club commitment was to FC United. “Having talented players won’t guarantee your team wins in soccer,” Akintade said of his primary takeaway from the Scouts’ season (411-5) this fall. “You have to work hard, every day. We realize that. If you’re having a bad day, or if things aren’t going the team’s way, you still have to work hard.” De Filippis expressed a similar sentiment. “Yes, skill is important, but so is teamwork,” he said. De Filippis likes to spend his free time with f riends and playing video games. Akintade knows exactly why De Filippis is way better than average in the world of competitive electronics. “It’s because he plays a lot,” a grinning Akintade said. Akintade raced often last winter for the Scouts’ varsity swimming and diving squad, anchoring the team’s 400-yard freestyle relay to a first-place time of 3:17.1 at a sectional in the home water. His strongest individual event is the 100 breaststroke; he said he’s two seconds off the school record in the event. Among the other stabilizing “spine” mates expected to return for the Scouts in ’19 are backs Konrad Ziaja and Jamie Phalen, goalkeeper John Walsh and electric and tireless midfielder Carter Collis. All are current juniors. Phalen will suit up as a third-year varsity member next year. “Remember,” Parry told his boys shortly after the playoff loss last weekend, “this is the first day of next season.” Notable: Lake Forest High School’s tie with host Stevenson High School earlier this month was the Scouts’ third stalemate in North Suburban Conference play. LFHS junior Nico De Filippis tallied the match’s final goal via a penalty kick with 12:01 left in the second half. The Patriots welcome visiting teams at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. … Scouts senior forward Kean O’Connor delivered a team-high six assists this fall. … Scouts senior back Aved Markarian served as the team’s captain in ’18. State golfers rise after snowfall BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Entering last weekend’s Class 3A boys state golf tournament in Bloomington, Lake Forest High School’s Scouts had won a sectional, a regional, the North Suburban Conference Meet, the New Trier Invitational and a home invite. LFHS was hot, hot, hot. Then it snowed in the middle of Day 1 at state October 12. A half-inch of the white stuff covered the greens at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course. “They were unputtable,” Lake Forest coach Jim Matheson said. Tournament officials reduced the tournament from a 36-hole event to an 18-hole event. Every qualifier had to start over on October 13. Matheson’s boys made another run at state hardware (top 3 teams) before settling for a fourth-place showing with a 15-over-par 303. Scouts junior Patrick Moorhead shot a 1-over 73 to tie New Trier junior Daniel Tanaka and two others for ninth place. Loyola Academy senior Peter Radler ended up as the North Shore’s top individual with a fifth-placetying 72. Radler, Tanaka and the bucket-hat-wearing Moorhead, a fun-loving lefty, returned home as all-staters. “His swing was great at the end of the season,” Matheson said of Moorhead. “His swing … it was just consistent, methodical. It got to the point where it never got too far off line.” Moorhead carded three birdie, including holes 9 and 10. “Patrick,” the coach added, “makes enough birdies in his rounds. If he bogeys a hole, he usually sets himself up for birdie putts at the next three holes.” Senior Danny Fisher emerged as the Scouts’ No. 2 scorer last weekend with a 75 (18th-place tie), followed by freshman Jack Marshall (76), senior Sam Davis (79), sophomore Charlie Haggerty (79) and sophomore Colin Jasper (81). Each qualifying team’s top four scores counted. Hinsdale Central (297), Stevenson (298) and Lockport (299) finished 1-2-3. “Our guys wanted the team to finish in the top three, badly,” Matheson said. “So badly that a conversation about any individual’s performance never came up. We’d been playing so well as a team in the last three, four weeks. “Such a good group of guys,” the coach added. “They all got along, all liked to hang out together. We ate a lot of great meals together.” Radler and Loyola Academy’s Ramblers took fifth place (303), a scant one stroke heavier than LF’s total. LA’s Nos. 2-5 scorers were seniors Jack Crawshaw (75), Christopher Lee (78) and Ryan Savarie (79) and sophomore Patrick Adler (79). Ramblers junior Sam Maylee (82) also toured The Den. Tanaka and his New Trier teammates finished in ninth place (312). Trevians sophomore Charlie Creamean shot a 75, five shots better than junior teammate Brian Joseph’s round. “[Tanaka] attacked the course when he needed to and played smart when the pins dictated that he play it safe,” Trevians golf coach Pete Drevline said,

Regional medalist Mary Boesen (80-79), senior Shea Graf (80-82) and junior Grace Kryscio (82-80). North Shore Country Day School sophomore Caroline Gray tied for 25th place (85-80) at last weekend’s Class 1A state tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

New Trier JV girls golf: Andy Horne had plenty of reasons — six, to be exact — to tout his Trevians’ dominant effort at the Central Suburban League South JV tournament last month. The coach’s top six golfers finished 1-2-3-4-5-6 at the six-team gathering. “I’d never seen that at a league meet,” said Horner, who coached his 15th season at the school this fall. Five of the six are freshmen, including medalist Amelia Morris, who shot a 76. Freshmen Carter Sichol and Siara Patel tied for runner-up honors with 77s, followed by sophomore Elsa Vieregg (78) and freshmen Peyton Sichol (82) and Courtney Schumacher (84). “Our freshman class is really deep, really strong,” Horne said, adding Morris and Carter Sichol served as varsity alternates for the state series. His quick take on two of the JVers: On Patel: “Works really hard, loves the game.” On Schumacher: “Great athlete. She also plays
adding Tanaka’s even demeanor on the golf course impresses him almost as much as his golf abilities. “Daniel used his length and superb ball-striking skills under difficult conditions. He accepted each shot as a challenge.” At the Class 1A state tournament held at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington last weekend, North Shore Country Day School’s Raiders tied for eighth place with a 359. Inclement weather forced officials to reduce the tournament to an 18-hole event. Sophomore Eli Sherman paced the Raiders with a 12-over 84. Scores from seniors Ward Madigan (91) and Quinn Connolly (91) and junior Henry Echt (93) also counted for the Winnetka school on October 13. Girls golf: Four state meets, four top-10 finishes. A New Trier High School student named Penny produced those invaluable results for the school’s varsity golf program. Senior Penelope Tir — last year’s Class 2A state medalist for the team state champion — finished fourth in her final season at last weekend’s state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth. Her two-round total of 147 (73-74) trailed state champion Lauren Beaudreau of Benet Academy by seven strokes. Tir, who took medalist honors at the Conant Sectional October 8, tied for sixth place at state as a freshman and tied for fourth place at state in her sophomore season. “Fantastic career,” said Trevians coach Scott Fricke, whose 2018 squad placed fourth (627) — three shots more than third-place Lincoln-Way Central’s total. “Penny,” he added, “is one of the best we’ve ever seen here at New Trier.” Senior Lizzie Kenter emerged as the Trevians’ No. 2 scorer, carding an 80 on October 12 and a 75 the next day. NT sophomore Audrey Tir (83-79)

and senior Abbie Kaestle (84-79) contributed to NT’s total, too. Loyola Academy’s Ramblers, meanwhile, placed sixth with a 635 total behind senior Lilly Gentzkow’s 152 (76-76), good for 13th place overall. LA’s Nos. 2-4 scorers were junior and reigning Loyola Academy

Ford blooming, stigma wilting BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The eight floral arrangements on the Ford family’s kitchen island in Lake Forest make Tom Ford stop on an August morning in 2017. The beauty had stunned Katie Ford’s husband. “Those are awesome!” Tom says to Katie. “Where did you buy those and how much did they cost?” Katie smiles. “I did them myself,” she says. Katie had arranged the flowers to brighten the day for eight people in her life. Tom looks at the explosion of colors in the kitchen again. Tom looks at Katie, still beaming, again. Tom’s expression shouts, “ You are the real deal.” Katie Ford launches Flowers by KATIE FORD four months later. The Ford garage serves as the venture’s headquarters. For now. Her business isn’t just blooming. It’s also … booming. Katie Ford sits with me at a table near a window at An Apple a Day Catering & Meg’s Café in Glencoe. She orders coffee, a fruit bowl and whole wheat toast with butter. The 46-year-old mother of four (Ellie, 15, Harry, 13, Maisy, 11, and Buck, 9) cannot believe what her business has become. It’s her turn to be stunned. “I never thought I’d do weddings or teach floral arranging classes [at Elawa Farm, in Lake Forest), but I’m doing those things and many other things,” Ford says. “I never dreamed my business would get as big and as busy as it is now. I thought I’d maybe arrange flowers for friends and the occasional dinner party.” July 2014. Katie Ford’s family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard nears its end. Katie senses a … grayness. The grayness triggers an uneasy feeling. She tells Tom at the airport in Boston, “I’m not feeling right, not feeling like myself.” Days later, in Lake Forest, the grayness lingers. “It felt like a cloud surrounding me,” Ford, sunshine personified and perennial flower giver, remembers. But the persistent, distressing companion didn’t stop Ford from loving her family, from working diligently, from deepening her friendships, from skiing and from playing tennis and paddle tennis. The topic obsessive-compulsive disorder came up later in conversation with a friend. Ford opened up. The friend knew of a public meeting, to be held in Glencoe. The meeting would address mental health issues. Doctors and experts in the field would speak there. Citizens afflicted with mental disorders would speak there. “You should go,” the friend urged. The nudge was a gentle one. Katie Ford went to the meeting. “My friend assured me everything would be OK,” Ford says. “And she was right. It was a casual setting, and I met a man who had exactly what I had [obsessive-compulsive disorder with intrusive thoughts]. He had made it, survived it, and he was willing to talk about it with me. That was such a relief, hearing him. It was a huge moment for me.
42
It was a turning point. I cried. He gave me his card; we emailed each other. “His wonderful message to me that day was, ‘You are not alone.’ ” Ford read up on the condition and sought therapy for it. She probably learned obsessivecompulsive disorder grips 1 to 2 percent of the population. She probably learned research has not been able to determine a definitive cause or causes of OCD. She probably learned there also is no known OCD gene. Facts enlightened her. Anecdotes comforted her.
The Equality State were nanny, swim instructor, health club lifeguard/pool manager, ski corps member and personal assistant ranch hand. “I was a cowgirl for a while,” she says with a slight drawl. “Skiing was my favorite sport then, and it still is today. Mountains are my church. I love Jackson Hole. I love the Canadian Rockies. “Even seeing mountains in a picture fills my soul.” The cowgirl eventually shed the boots and the fringe jacket to become a big city girl. Ford’s first job in Chicago was administrative assistant at a financial firm. She later worked for the Golden Apple Foundation as coordinator of its Golden Apple Teacher Education (GATE) Program, an alternative teacher certification program, in partnership with Chicago Public Schools. Katie first met future husband Tom at the Fullerton ‘L’ stop. “I introduced myself to him,” she says. Their first date? A walk, f r o m t h e
February 2018. Tom Ford is out of town, and Katie, sitting in bed, eyes her laptop’s keyboard. It’s time — more than three years after the grayness had first entered her life on the East Coast — to type a message, detailing her encounter with mental illness, and share it on social media. Others need to know they aren’t alone. Tonight, not tomorrow. “I was terrified, at first, about going public with my illness, but I did it because I knew the platform I chose to use would reach many people,” Ford says. “My goal, by telling my story, was to help others realize they had no reason to feel ashamed about what they’re enduring, about what they’re thinking. Keeping open dialogue going about mental health issues is the only way to break the barriers and the stigmas that go along with it.” One month later at the Lake Bluff Park District Recreation Center, Ford spoke as a panelist, alongside three others, about mental health issues. “I am managing it, and I have it under control,” Ford says. “My greatest gift? Fighting this thing. But I could not have reached this point without the incredible support I’ve received from my husband, my family, my friends and people, so many people — people who had either heard me speak or read my post and then genuinely want to know how I’m doing when they see me. So much good has come from this, so much positivity. “What really excites me is being able to have coffee with someone who is dealing with a mental health issue and then informing that person of the resources available.” The youngest of Pete and Ellie’s six children, Ford grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and attended Abington Heights High School, home of the Comets. She served as senior class president, was named prom queen, made homecoming court, played four years of varsity field hockey and collected four more varsity letters in swimming. “I was known as the happy kid at school, as the dork — with a capital ‘D’ — because I always liked to be with my parents,” Ford says. “You know what? I liked to be around my parents as much as possible because they were my best friends.” Her longtime good buddy Pete died last year. Ford swam for two seasons at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, before earning a degree in elementary education at Wake Forest University and a master’s degree in learning disabilities education at Northwestern University. She had spent three years in Wyoming before going for her master’s. Among her occupations in

Loop to her home. The journey for folks with mental illness today continues to be a challenging one for many. But it’s gradually getting smoother, more navigable, thanks in part to brave survivors and thrivers and their willingness to speak. And to listen. And to guide. The stigma long associated with mental illness? It’s fading, fading, fadi …

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LAKE FOREST OR LAKE BLUFF? I have been with Griffith, Grant & Lackie since 1995 but Lake Forest has been home to me and my family for over 30 years. There are countless genuine, smart, and successful individuals and families in the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities, and I am lucky to call many of them my friends.
