Fresh off her Emmy award win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Rachel Brosnahan, who portrays the aspiring, irreverent, and cheeky stand up comedienne Midge Maisel in Amazon’s hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is coming to the North Shore. That’s right. The Highland Park native will be the headliner at the Highland Park Community House at 7 p.m. on October 19 to promote Wilmette-based Actors Training Center (ATC) and close friend and mentor Carole Dibo, who was instrumental in launching Brosnahan’s career. “When we went into business together, she (Brosnahan) wasn’t really and actress, and I wasn’t really a manager,” laughs Dibo, founder and executive director of ATC. Brosnahan took her first acting class at age 16 with Dibo at ATC, and the two established a lasting bond—first as mentor-student, then as manager-actress, and now as colleagues and lifelong friends. The upcoming event, titled “A Marvelous Evening with Mrs. Maisel,” promises to be

That gives the Strings two causes for a year-long celebration during its “Highland Park’s Got Talent” season, and it all starts with the first of three free concerts October 21 at Highland Park High School. The other two are set for December 2 and May 19. Each

They’ve raised their three kids in Highland Park, and Merdinger counts herself a very proud resident. She says performing with Highland Park Strings is a unique experience. “What distinguishes it from other orchestras that I’ve performed with is, it’s sort of like a homecoming in a sense — a lot of my friends are up there on the stage with me,” she adds. “They’re playing at a very high level. It’s really musically gratifying, but it’s also spiritually gratifying when you have that sort of camaraderie with the orchestra.” Merdinger will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto Number One in B-flat minor on October 21. It’s her second time playing with Highland Park Strings, which will deploy a special

HONORING A LOCAL LEGEND We remember the life of former Sara Lee Corporation CEO and Lake Bluff philanthropist John H. Bryan Jr. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

In Chicago and throughout the country, former Sara Lee Corporation CEO John H. Bryan Jr. is being remembered for an enduring legacy as a philanthropist and patron to the arts. The 81-yearold resident of Crab Tree Farm in Lake Bluff — who died on October 1, four days before his 82nd birthday — is credited for raising the millions of dollars needed to make Millennium Park a reality and for his role in saving a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe landmark. He also spearheaded the fundraising initiative to add The Modern Wing at The Art Institute of Chicago. British sculptor Anish Kapoor, famously known as the man behind the downtown park’s famous $23 million sculpture, “The Bean,” praised Mr. Bryan in the Chicago Sun-Times as “a true and great Chicagoan.” But here on the North Shore, the former Kenilworth resident (where he lived for a decade before moving to Crab Tree Farm) was our friend and neighbor — touching our communities in ways both great and small. “Locally, he preserved and restored the farm elements and east side David Adler compound at Crab Tree Farm, and the artisans he patronized help restore and preserve many other places in the New Classicist estate house restoration and revival of the 1990s to the present,” says Arthur Miller, former president of Lake Forest Preservation Foundation and emeritus archivist at Lake Forest College. That restoration work earned Mr. Bryan and his wife of 60 years, Neville, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2014 Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award — the national preservation movement’s highest accolade. On a local level, he received the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society’s Local Legends award in 2012, where like other recipients, he was interviewed by Bill Kurtis. Miller says that Mr. Bryan’s reach across national, Chicago, and Lake Forest-Lake Bluff cultural life was without parallel. “His most notable triumph — Millennium Park — led to a revival of residential life in the central city core from Grant Park spreading north to the Chicago River Walk extending east and west. He primed the pump,” says Miller, adding that while Mr. Bryan’s work at Crab Tree Farm is well known in the preservation community, his other local endeavors were done quietly and without fanfare.

Long before Millennium Park, Mr. Bryan helped raise $100 million from 33 corporations to refurbish both the Lyric Opera building and Orchestra Hall in Chicago. He also chaired the centennial anniversary of United Way in 1984, bringing in another $100 million. He was also an art lover, in the truest sense. Though no major art museums existed within 100 miles of where Mr. Bryan grew up, he told our reporter that a lifelong “interest in the visual” propelled him to become a passionate collector of American, French and British John H. They also form the food chain base for spiders, small- to medium-sized mammals and scores of bird species.” The exhibit is a tribute to the life of former Illinois Audubon Society Executive Director Marilyn Campbell, who was a bird and wildlife enthusiast and the editor of Illinois Audubon. She died in 2017. Heller Nature Center Office Coordinator Sue Monsen knows Schmakel from her previous involvement with the nature center. Schmakel helped Monsen and her staff set up the exhibit

in the Prairie Room. “We always promote local artists in our Prairie Room here,” Monsen says, adding Schmakel has been a Heller Nature Center volunteer for years. “I met with Carla, saw the artwork and was thrilled to be able to add it to our repertoire.” The works on display depict scenes the human eye wouldn’t normally glimpse. “What was captured with the camera and the drawings themselves are very close-up,” she says. “I encourage people to come out and see the exhibit.”

Pumpkin lovers pumped for gourd-geous fare at Prairie Grass Café

Two flat-screen televisions projecting moving images of cows, grazing on the open plains, artfully partition Prairie Grass’s bar and central dining room. The Pilgrim Chamber Players held its annual benefit on September 22 at Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, marking the start of its 22nd season. The program included music by Faure, Hagen and Ravel, and the afternoon highlight was a concert by the Lincoln Trio with violinist Desiree Ruhstrat, cellist David Cunliff, and pianist Marta Aznavoorian. A reception with lavish hors d’oeuvres and libations preceded the afternoon musicale. Janice Honigberg, Rhoda Pierce and Madeleine Plonsker chaired the event, which raised $15,000.

Kaestle finds home on golf courses New Trier senior socks drives, blurts catchphrases BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

New Trier senior golfer Abbie Kaestle owns furry wolf and ram club head covers. The Winnetkan’s family has three cats and two dogs. And one of her signature reactions to a golf shot — a shout she’d like to blare only a handful of times each season and one she introduced to teammates in the summer of 2017 — is “Chunky monkey!” A chunked shot in golf is not a good one. To chunk a ball is to hit it fat, usually at an undesirable distance. “I’ll never forget when she first yelled that,” NT senior golfer Lizzie Kenter recalls with a laugh. “The two of us were playing a round with Rachel Rhee [NTHS, ’18] in tryouts. Rachel and I had never heard such a phrase. But it sounded funny. Abbie is hilarious, kind of a riot all the time. “Maybe I’ll buy her a monkey head cover and

I’m going to miss her consistency as a golfer next year. I’ll also miss how great she was as a teammate. Good kid. “There’s a lot to like about Abbie,” Fricke adds.

I’m going to [savor] this for as long as possible.’ ” Abbie Kaestle certainly relished the Trevians’ state championship last fall after having shot 78-77 to finish in a tie for 30th place overall and in a tie for third (with Kenter) among teammates. Kaestle had helped NT’s previous two teams place fifth at state. “I like golf because I’ve always liked being outside around nature, around animals,” Kaestle says. “Too many people these days stay inside for too many hours, mostly because they want to be close to technology.” But Kaestle, who has been interested in science and medicine for years, does find the time to do important work under a roof — at Northwestern University. Since last December, for up to three days a week during the school year (except during golf season), she has helped professors conduct

The last thing that Highland Park High School’s varsity football coaches wanted to see in the second half of a game in Schaumburg last month was a severely injured Tommy Motzko making his way from a bench to the sideline. But the highly competitive Motzko — a 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior middle linebacker/ fullback in his third season on varsity — did

futile attempt to gang-halt him. Motzko bounced back up, ran for another yard on the next play and, two plays later, grabbed a handoff from senior quarterback Michael Rooney and racked up 12 more yards. “Big help, great player, and Tommy’s a solid individual,” Giants senior lineman Matt Cortes says of one of the team captains. “He wants every inch, no matter what, as a running back. The intensity he plays with this year is the same as it was last year and in his sophomore season. He still wants it — wants it more than most football players do.” Cortes first met Motzko in the sixth grade. Cortes would grow into a 6-1, 324-pound HPHS senior. His first impression of Motzko six years ago? “I remember being scared of him,” Cortes, cracking a smile, says. “He was scary, but he was also a great guy, a real good kid.” Motzko, the son of biology teacher John Motzko at rival Deerfield High School, might strike fear in wrestlers from other schools this winter. Motzko has as much experience in wrestling as a newborn does. But that certainly won’t keep Giants varsity wrestling coach Chris Volpe from happily handing Motzko a singlet and grappling headgear and ordering him to become a takedown machine. “I haven’t told [Volpe] that I’m thinking about coming out for wrestling,” says Motzko, who is also seriously thinking about pursing nursing as a major at SDSU. “I’m too focused on football. “I love football. I love the physicality of it, the competitiveness involved. I’ve met so many friends and so many good people through football.”

Brad Hokin was a junior safety/running back/ punt and kick returner on the varsity football team at Highland Park High School in 1980. Only two seasons earlier, he weighed a little more than the combined weight of the football uniform and gear he wore on Game Days. “I was one of the smallest players back then, easily,” recalls the fit 6-foot, 195-pound Hokin, a 54-year-old who had ordered the entire right side of the menu and part of the left at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Highland Park (slight exaggeration; Mr. Hokin actually ordered iced tea, a Mediterranean omelet sans olives, turkey sausage, hash browns and a side of buckwheat pancakes). “I never stopped working hard to get better at football,” the Skokie resident adds. “And there I was, starting and playing varsity football for my school in the opener against Morton High School. My hard work was rewarded. My head coach [ Jay Geerdes] and defensive coordinator [Bill Bodle] rewarded me with playing time. “You don’t forget a thing like that.” Hokin — now a running backs/defensive backs coach at Glenbrook North High School, following prep coaching stints at Niles West High School (2009-16) and at his alma mater (in 1986, as the Giants’ freshman ‘B’ football coach) — proved he belonged on the football field that day and ended up a two-time all-Central Suburban League player. His confidence grew with each quarter. His grades? They soared, too, with each semester. “That feeling I experienced in that game, in that season opener, is one I want all of the players I coach to feel at some point,” Hokin adds. Hokin launched his company, Glory Days, in 1997, and still runs it in between Spartans football practices and games. It sells bottled water to between 30-40 Illinois high schools, with each bottle featuring a label depicting the school’s sports nickname. Glory Days (glorydaysphotos.com) also provides photographs of high school athletes in action for purchase online and at team banquets. But there’s more to Hokin’s football story … a whole 99 yards more. He suited up for four seasons at Boston University, becoming an AllAmerican defensive back and an Academic AllAmerican. In a game against Maine, Hokin recorded two interceptions, two sacks and 12 tackles. He was like the turf on that day — everywhere. USA Today recognized the Giantt u r n e d -Te r r i e r ’ s monster game against the

Black Bears. The Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League drafted him. But BU’s 1985-86 Student-Athlete of the Year and owner of a 3.8 grade-point average played exactly zero downs for the Renegades, coached by current ESPN college football broadcaster L e e

Corso. The USFL folded before the start of the 1986 season. Hokin coached gridders at Dartmouth College and at the University of Massachusetts in his early to mid 20s, before he could no longer douse his desire to play competitive football again. “I was 25, and I had an agent who contacted professional Swedish football teams for me,” Hokin says. The MalmÖ Griffins of the Superserien American football league in Sweden named Hokin a player/ coach. He earned Coach of the Year honors and guided the Griffins to the Swedish Super Bowl. A serious injury in the fourth quarter of that game forced Hokin to retire as a player. Hokin returned to the Chicago area in the early 1990s and found work in the sports media industry. Longtime, clever, funny and highly entertaining TV sports anchor Mark Giangreco served as Hokin’s primary mentor. Hokin, armed with a BU mass communication degree, was a writer, producer and interviewer for NBC-Channel 5’s “Preps Watch Show” on Sunday nights and later produced content for ESPN’s “Scholastic Sports America”. “I also got the sports radio bug,” says Hokin, alluding to his time with “WMAQ Sports Huddle”. But the loves of his life today are, in order, his parents; his wife of nine years, nurse practitioner Jacquie Toia, who met her future groom while working out at a health club in Chicago; his core group of friends; and his opportunities to coach football practice four days per

week and coach during a football game once a week each autumn. “My wife is the rock star of our family,” insists Hokin, whose family also includes a three-legged dog named Bernie and three cats. “I love her drive, her intelligence, her honesty. She is very, very driven. “She inspires me.” Hokin’s close friends today — Joey Resnick, Steve Mandell, Dave Mayber, Tom Ivey and Danny Wilk — were his close friends in high school. How many 50-somethings are able to claim that? Position coaches in football often have more of a positive impact on players’ lives than head coaches do. A position coach like Hokin, after all, oversees drills designed for his players, his guys. Position coaches are there, every day, to deliver one-on-one pep talks, to ask how their players are feeling, to ask how their players are doing in the classroom, to listen, listen, listen. “Most coaches coach because they’re interested in developing meaningful, productive relationships with student-athletes,” Hokin says. “I’m one of those coaches. There’s nothing like getting a kid, through a sport, to believe in himself and then watching him put that confidence to use in other areas of his life. “But athletes, for the most part, play sports to have fun and compete in games with their friends,” he adds. “You can never lose sight of that. Decades from now, they’re not going to remember their teams’ season records or details like that. They’re going to remember what was said or what happened on the bus ride to a road game or a funny thing that happened in a practice, like Coach Hokin falling down.” Hokin later clarifies one of his thoughts. “I have not,” he says, “fallen down in a practice.” The coach smiles and fork-stabs his stack of pancakes. Life is good for Brad Hokin. No, great. He’s doing what he loves to do and changing young lives for the better along the way. “I’m fortunate.
