ESPN named the Chicago Blackhawks the worst franchise in all of sports in 2007. The struggling National Hockey League team had failed to qualify for the playoffs for a fourth straight year. Good seats weren’t just available at United Center when the Hawks skated; they often outnumbered the occupied seats. And the club’s management team, the Wirtz Corporation, was stuck in the past. Three years later, the Blackhawks won the first of their three Stanley Cup championships in a six-year span. The main man behind the drastic turnaround? Rocky Wirtz, grandson and son of former Wirtz Corporation honchos Arthur and Bill, respectively. Rocky assumed control of the

The news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer hit Donna Whitko-Fisk first. The New Jersey mother of three — ages 5, 3 and 1 — was 35 seven years ago. Shortly before undergoing the first of three surgeries, including a double mastectomy, Whitko-Fisk contracted pneumonia. Hit No. 2 left her unable to hold her youngest. Whitko-Fisk’s twin sister, Sheri Whitko of Glencoe, and Sheri’s husband flew to New Jersey to be there for Donna and her family for a month. The aunt of Whitko’s husband had died of breast cancer that same year. “It was a very emotional road for Donna and our family,” recalls Whitko, a co-chair (with Wendy Heltzer) of the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation’s Annual Fall Luncheon. “My family has definitely been hit by this disease, and, given our personal connection, I feel very passionate about the cause.” Whitko is grateful that her twin’s cancer didn’t spread; Whitko-Fisk didn’t have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatments. This made Sheri Whitko more determined to take an active role in the foundation. The Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation (LSCRF), in its 33rd year, holds its luncheon at the Hilton Chicago October 22. Whitko is thrilled that her twin sister, her parents and other family members will travel to Chicago to attend the luncheon. “I’m very appreciative that my sister survived, and I’m grateful to be connected with Northwestern, a great hospital,” Whitko says. Whitko is excited that this year’s Pink Ribbons Awards luncheon has an Academy Awards theme. Its guest speaker will be Jill Kargman, an actress, author and cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy recently. Kargman is the creator, writer, producer and star of the television comedy Odd Mom Out, where she plays a satirical version of herself facing the challenges of raising children on New York City’s Upper East Side. In addition to hosting The Jill Kargman Show on SiriusXM Stars Channel 109, Kargman performs with the Upright Citizens Brigade improvisational and sketch comedy group. She recently appeared in the film A Bad Moms Christmas. As an LSCRF executive board member, Whitko has had the pleasure of meeting several celebrity guest speakers, including Academy Award-winning actresses Sally Field, Diane Keaton and Kathy Bates, an ovarian and breast cancer survivor. Whitko looks forward to meeting Kargman — “She’s hilarious,” Whitko says — at the LSCRF luncheon, during which Kargman’s publicist and friend, Chicagoan Julia Van Nice, will interview the entertainer. The Pink Ribbons Award for Best Documentary Short Film will go to Grace, the story of a 36-year-old mom who covers her mastectomy scars with an elaborate tattoo. Kohl Children’s Museum publicly unveiled its new fundraising campaign, “Play It Forward”, on September 25 during a kick-off party. With a goal of $15 million dollars, the museum announced that is has secured pledges for more than half of the funds thus far during the reception. A majority of monies raised by the campaign will go toward expanding and reconfiguring the museum’s facilities, experiences for children that build a foundation for a lifetime of learning, and new interactive elements to better engage the museum’s higher-age attendees. Dishing and scoring Loyola Academy’s Collin Leider gets it done — in soccer and in the kitchen BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Collin Leider was 12 years old when he first attempted to bake at home. He made cheesecake on that day. It didn’t turn out very well. “Horrible, horrible, horrible,” Leider, a senior forward on Loyola Academy’s boys soccer team, recalls. “Bitter. It was bitter, bitter, bitter. “I took one bite and threw the rest of it out.” Leider’s soccer game has been considerably more pleasing than that concoction was in the Leider

hero for us. He doesn’t score a ton of goals. But he creates, gets his teammates involved, does the little things you need from players on a successful team.” The middle sibling in a family with five children, Leider — the son of Colleen and Gerard, a 1990 Loyola Academy graduate — loves to battle in pickup games with younger brother Ryan, a freshman who plays for LA’s sophomore soccer team. Their one-on-one Nerf hoops clashes in the Leider basement have steadily been nearing UFC ferocity. A pay-per-view deal is just around the octagon. “We go to town down there,” Leider says, as another grin surfaces. “Physical, it gets quite physical, with elbows flying, bruises forming. But we love it, love going at it. “We both love to compete.” The Ramblers’ varsity soccer squad loves what Fisher opted to do with the right-footed Leider several weeks ago. The coach shifted Leider from left wing to right wing. He had three goals before the move and five goals since, to go with three assists since the start of the season. “Collin’s experience, definitely, is one of his strengths,” says LA sophomore midfielder Tommy Zipprich, an Evanston resident. “He’s a big part of our team, with the way he brings us together and always serves as a good outlet. He’s fast and aggressive and a very good passer. He goes all out, doesn’t like to take his foot off the gas. “Collin,” he adds, “runs until his face is purple.” Most turnips are purple. Leider hasn’t made a meal that includes turnips for Fisher. Leider has yet to make anything for Fisher. “I’d let him bake or cook something for me,” Fisher says. “Collin is mature beyond his years. Here he is, a 17-year-old, baking and cooking. Very, very mature, and he eats healthy food. You know what Collin is? He’s the ‘grandfather’ of our team.”

If you’re looking for a soccer player who owns the necessary ingredients of a complete player, Collin Leider — a Class 3A all-sectional player last fall — is that player. He has intensity, skills, speed, savvy, tirelessness and a ravenous will to win. “I hate to lose,” Leider admits. “I’m competitive, in everything. I have drive. Sometimes, after a tough loss, I have a hard time letting go. It stays with me too long. That desire can be a good thing, and it can be unhealthy. “Our coach [Baer Fisher] tells us to have a short

A New Trier penalty lopped 20 yards off that reception, but three straight Ochsenhirt rushes ate up the final 1:14. “A little nervous before the start of the game,” admitted Kosanovich, a free safety in the fifth grade before becoming a cornerback three years later. “[State-ranked] Evanston had clout. It was also a team that came in with confidence.” New Trier’s players entered that game in navy-blue jersey tops, a stark departure from the school’s traditional green threads. The new hue was Doll’s idea. “I’d been thinking about an alternate jersey for our program for a while,” Doll, a New Trier graduate, said, adding the decision to go with navy was a nod to New Trier’s history. (When New Trier West and New Trier East high schools existed before the merger in 1982, West sports teams wore navy-colored togs.) Before most snaps, on both sides of the ball, Kosanovich reaches behind his 6-foot, 185-pound frame to dab the towel with his fingers. “I want everything to be perfect,” he said after a game last weekend. The second-year varsity Trevian was quiet offensively, but he still ranks highly among teammates in receptions, receiving yardage and TD receptions for a 5-1 team, 2-0 in the Central Suburban League South. “So fun, a happy-go-lucky kid who’s always positive,” New Trier football coach Brian Doll said of Kosanovich, who plays on all of NT’s special teams except for punt team. “He’s a big-play kid. Electric. “People don’t realize how fast Carson is,” the coach added. “But he’s fast, believe me.” Kosanovich’s pick-6 opened the scoring in the showdown of 4-1 teams, and senior kicker Graham Dable made it 7-0 with the first of his five extra points. Kosanovich had entered the game with two career varsity interceptions.

Notable: New Trier’s biggest scoring play in the first half of its 35-28 defeat of Evanston last weekend was senior running back Brian Sitzer’s 72-yard TD catch-and-run in the second quarter. Sitzer collected a sideline toss from quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt, stopped abruptly, cut toward the middle of the field and raced for more than 50 yards to give NT a 13-6 advantage. Marcia Cleveland’s parents, Bob and Carolyn, had a watertight reason for teaching a nearly 2-year-old Marcia how to swim. They got tired of retrieving their curious, fearless tot at the bottom of pools. It’s never a good thing to impersonate a rock in a body of water. “Swimming is a life skill,” Cleveland, now 54, says from her seat at Café Buongiorno in her hometown of Winnetka. “Did you know only 52 percent of Americans know how to swim?” Only four American women have ever swum across the North Channel — 21 miles, between Ireland and Scotland — and one of them awaits her order of iced tea, two poached eggs, rye toast and a side of tomatoes at Café Buongiorno. To prepare for the daunting journey she swam between 30,000-40,000 yards (17-23 miles) per week for nine months. Cleveland accomplished the grueling feat in 15 hours and 3 minutes on July 21, in 53-54-degree water. The tentacles of jellyfish with umbrellashaped bells the size of garbage-can lids brushed her often. She doesn’t remember stretches during the last several hours of the swim because she was hypothermic but still conscious. She couldn’t swim faster than 1 mile per hour during the final hours. A crew member, Lee Harkleroad, aboard the accompanying boat, would later note, “It was truly painful to watch the contortions on Marcia’s face and her lifeless eyes.” Cleveland’s husband of 28 years, Mark Green, also served as a crew member. “Hardest thing I’ve ever done, physically and mentally,” says Cleveland, a mother of two ( Julia and Samuel) who, while two months pregnant in 1997, swam 12 miles in 4 hours and 43 minutes in an open water race near Key West, Florida, and finished in fifth place among women in the event. “It took everything I had. They say swimming the English Channel [Cleveland did that, in 1994] is the open water equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. Well, swimming the North Channel is harder, probably as hard as the north-face assent of K2 in the winter. I usually breathe every three strokes. I thought about my children and husband throughout the swim, so I’d chant, ‘Mark, Julia, Sam’ [during her pre-breathe segments]. “And every time I saw a jellyfish, and I must have seen thousands of them, I’d say, ‘Peace be with you,’ to each because that calmed me down. I didn’t want to generate any negativity at any point of the swim.” Cleveland found success in chlorinated water early. Shortly after learning how to swim from her parents, she won races against other 3-year-olds. Handily. More than once, when she was as couple of feet from the finishing wall, a treading Cleveland would wait for the rest of the field to catch up to her — before gliding to touch the wall first. “I did that because it was a nice thing to do,” recalls Cleveland, an All-American swimmer (1980-82) at Greenwich High School in Connecticut before racing for four varsity women’s teams at Yale University. Cleveland was a media buyer/planner for an advertising firm in New York when she noticed a sign announcing a Masters Swimming meeting

in a YMCA. She attended it. She learned all about open water swimming. It wasn’t long before she completed her first major marathon swim — around Manhattan Island, in 1990, as a relay member. In 1990 (mixed division) and ’93 (women’s) she and her mates established relay world records in the 28.5-mile test. “A big part of my social life, after college, involved time spent

with masters swimmers,” Cleveland says. It was raining — yes, m o r e water — when she was outside and didn’t have an umbrella during a break at work one day. But a Mark Green, a media researcher in the same advertising firm, did. A courtship began. “Before we got married [in 1990], “Cleveland says, “I made Mark take a premarital swim test in my grandparents’ pool in Palm Beach. I made him swim all of the strokes of swimming [freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke]. He passed.” Cleveland — a swim instructor at Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Northbrook and the director of swimming at Vision Quest Coaching in Highland Park — swam solo across the English Channel in 1994 and wrote about it in

combined times in the English Channel, Manhattan Island and Catalina Channel swims. Three short weeks after finishing first at the 17-mile Swim Across the Long Island Sound (which doubled as a fundraiser for cancer in 2011), Cleveland completed the 21.4-mile Lake Tahoe Length Swim. “I’m not a superhero or some amazing physical specimen,” Cleveland, a recipient of many International Swimming Hall of Fame certificates of recognition, writes in her “Swimming the North Channel” entry on her website, doversolo.com. “But I knew that if I had the energy to stop and complain or beg for an explanation of why we weren’t getting closer to the land during the swim, it would be wasted time, time that could be spent getting to land. “We weren’t getting any closer because I wasn’t swimming faster at a time when the tide was pushing me in a north-south direction down the coast, when what I was trying to do was swim though it in an eastern direction.” Harkleroad, the crew member, swam alongside Cleveland for about 10 minutes at the end of Cleveland’s North Channel swim — before Cleveland even realized his presence. “I don’t doubt this,” she writes. “Whatever he was telling me, I wasn’t processing. The only thing I remember was the beach before us, to finish where there is no water in front of me. He says he was telling me, ‘Stand up!’ because we were in waist-deep water; his words didn’t register at all. Finally, I hit the beach and clawed my way up the shore.” Why does she do this? She must answer the question often. She loves to push herself. “And I like to inspire others to do things,” Cleveland says. Our conversation fast-forwards to a time Cleveland sees herself in a nursing home. She is in a room, with a caregiver nearby. “Oh, I’ll still be swimming then, and I’m sure I’ll be driving everyone at the nursing home crazy,” Cleveland insists. “I can hear myself saying, “Hey, I need a new bathing suit. Need new goggles, too. “ ‘Mine are broken.’ ”
