It has been more than a decade since Lake Forest resident Melinda Mooney first walked into Justin Hartley’s first grade class at South Elementary School in North Chicago and became his reading tutor. Mooney, a former book publishing executive, was one of a growing network of volunteer reading specialists dispatched to South Elementary School by Lake Forest-based Reading Power. The nonprofit was founded in 2003, with a mission to provide literacy intervention and one-to-one tutoring to prekindergarten through-second grade students in underserved North Chicago and Zion elementary schools. Hartley, six years old in 2007, was the youngest of three boys born to Jamaican parents who had immigrated to the United States in the early 1990s. He needed specialized reading support that neither his school nor his parents could provide. “I was really little, so it’s hard to recall the exact details,” says Hartley, now a senior at North Shore Country Day School (NSCDS) in Winnetka. “We worked together in a bright room filled with books and posters. I remember it as a special time and space, where I felt free to ask questions.” Mooney has her own memory of that day. “I was struck by his kindness, his genuine curiosity and his willingness to work hard,”

Lake Foresters will be able to combine two of their favorite activities — shopping and supporting area nonprofits — for four days next month. The Lake Forest Shop, 265 E. Market Square, holds its 17th annual Shop Your Cause, beginning October 10. Shoppers will get 10 percent off their purchases, with another 10 percent going to the area nonprofit or nonprofits of their choice. This year the nonprofits are Lake Forest Symphony, Ragdale, Lake Forest Preservation Foundation, Lake Forest Open Lands, Lake County Community Foundation, Elawa Farm Foundation, Stirling Hall, Mother’s Trust Foundation, Citadel Theater, Gorton Community Center and Boys & Girls Club of Lake County. “It’s important to support one another because that makes a community stronger and better,” says Ellen Stirling, owner of the Lake Forest Shop. Stirling is stocking up on extra inventory for Shop Your Cause, which runs through October 13. Clothing by designers Sarah Alexander, Kinross Cashmere, Majestic and Lourdes Chavez will be available. We all started reading. “Even today, we’re always reading.” After finishing at South School, Hartley attended Learn 6 Charter School in North Chicago before gaining admission as a Class of 2019 student to the highly selective NSCDS. Still in touch after all these years, Hartley and Mooney will team up again this fall at Reading Power’s 15th-year anniversary fundraiser at Highland Park Country Club on October 18 (6-10 p.m.) The event will feature a reception, a book signing and a presentation, where Hartley will share his experience with Reading Power ahead of the evening’s featured guest speaker, Beth Ann Fennelly, poet-laureate of Mississippi and author Justin Hartley and his Reading Power tutor, Melinda Mooney of Lake of the book Heating and Cooling: 52 Micromemoirs. “I can think of no deeper, more lasting, more magical gift to give a child than the gift of reading,” Fennelly says in a statement posted on Reading Power’s website. “To take a story into oneself; to look through the eyes of another, to practice taking another’s perspective, to gain empathy and social awareness — these are skills that change lives, that ameliorate the wounds of the world.” Since 2003, Reading Power has provided one-to-one tutoring to more than 2,500 children, who struggled to read and write. While Reading Power students typically begin a school year far behind their peers, data show they quickly catch up. In the 2016-2017 school year, Reading Power first grade students made six-fold gains, second graders five-fold and kindergartens three-fold compared to their non-tutored classmates. “We firmly believe that the earliest intervention is the best

intervention,” says Mooney, a Reading Power volunteer for more than 10 years. Mooney adds that Reading Power differentiates itself from other early intervention programs through its professionally developed, researchedbased curricula. Reading Power’s site coordinators work closely with classroom teachers to ensure that reading plans are individualized daily for each student. Volunteers go through a rigorous training process and work with students during the school day as many as three to five times a week in a dedicated, onsite Reading Power classroom. “One of the keys to Reading Power’s success is consistency,” Mooney explains. “Tutors share notes on a student. Homework, along with sight word practice, is given every night.” Hartley enjoys reading memoirs and autobiographies today, and he recently completed an independent study in English. In the 1970s Steve Mondrowski grew up in a rough Chicago neighborhood. How dangerous was it? As soon as the sun set, many parents in the area ushered their children inside and locked the doors. When Mondrowski, now a Highland Park resident, was 10, he had the opportunity to attend House In The Wood summer camp. Not only was he exposed to fishing, swimming and boating, but he also had the freedom to enjoy outdoor evening activities, including Capture the Flag. Mondrowski says he went from survival of the fittest and always looking over his shoulder to learning to trust others and work as a member of a team. House In The Wood, a Northwestern Settlement program, hosts 400 children from Chicago’s neediest and most violent neighborhoods at a summer camp in Wisconsin and helps almost 1,100 children yearround through STEM-based outdoor education programs for Chicago elementary and high schools. “The camp allowed me, as a young kid growing up in the city, to see that there was a whole different world out there,” Mondrowski says of the summer escape to Delavan Lake, Wisconsin. “I also learned how to respect nature and a lot about teamwork.” The mission of House In The Wood camp is to nurture, educate and inspire youth. The Northwestern Settlement has been offering camping experiences to Chicago youth since 1897, but the camping program escalated considerably in 1910, when House In The Wood was founded. The nonprofit will hold its 2018 House In The Wood Gala October 13 at Venue Six10 in Chicago. “House In The Wood is not a typical camp, as it’s a critically important program serving one of Chicago’s most vulnerable populations,” North Shore

Board of Northwestern Settlement President Alice Schaff says. “It’s rewarding to know that at House In The Wood camp, children discover a safe and nurturing environment where they can get away from the stresses of urban life to learn, grow and just be kids.” Inspired by the six joyful years he spent at House In The Wood camp, Mondrowski purchased a home near Delavan Lake, where he enjoys taking his wife of 25 years, their 14-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter to reminisce about his experiences. Mondrowski started as a camper in the early 1970s, and he worked as a kitchen boy assisting in the preparation of meals for the campers before becoming a counselor at 16. He says the camp food was probably better than most of the food he ate at home. Mondrowski recalls how excited he was when he moved to the new cabins during his second year at the camp. The new cabins were built around 1973, housing about 60 kids. “The cabins were beautiful, compared to the old building,” he says. In addition to the water activities at the camp, Mondrowski also enjoyed playing football, baseball and basketball. He stopped attending the camp because of his family’s move to a western suburb. “I’m excited that the camp is still thriving and bringing joy to so many well-deserving kids,” Mondrowski says. Nearly a decade before Mondrowski’s first House In The Wood camp experience, Chicagoan Maryanne Jakubowski — at the age of 10, in 1966 — began the first of her three sojourns at the camp. She suffered initially, from homesickness, but care packages from her mom helped the healing process. Among her fondest camp memories was learning how to swim. Time spent near the lake also thrilled her. One of her favorite activities was singing songs after dinner in the mess hall; she still sings some of them to her grandchildren. Jakubowski notes “Heads,

Shoulders, Knees and Toes” ranks No. 1 on her list of top camp songs. Jakubowski never saw any of the campers again, but she and a fellow camper became pen pals — and remained ones for 10 years. When Jakubowski and her husband became empty nesters 15 years ago, they drove to Wisconsin to see the camp. To put that in perspective, Highwood’s population is 5,377, according to a 2015 U.S. Census estimate. Money raised by the festival goes to Make-AWish Foundation. The festival generated $60,000 at each of the last two Pumpkin Festivals.

Ramblers senior tri-captain does a host of things well on courts BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Avid Jimmy Fallon fan Anne Martinson is behind in her The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon viewing. Way behind. Forty-five-taped-shows behind. And counting. “I have to watch those; I have to catch up,” the Loyola Academy senior volleyball player says, with her highly contagious smile making another appearance. “He’s good at entertaining. Any [sketch] he does with Justin Timberlake is great. “Jimmy’s positive, very funny,” the 5-foot-10 setter/right-side hitter and Evanston resident adds. Martinson, a tri-captain (with senior outside hitter Lizzie Walker and senior middle blocker Elizabeth Ford), owns similar traits atop volleyball courts, especially in between points. Her everpresent smile amid huddled teammates either shouts, “Nice going!” or screams, “Don’t worry;

says of the No. 1-jersey-wearing Martinson, who was promoted to the varsity near the end of her sophomore season. “Very vocal and positive and well-rounded, with a high volleyball IQ. Her teammates look to her to provide leadership; she’s an awesome leader. I like her athleticism, her attitude. “She can be super goofy at times,” the coach adds. “But, when necessary, she shows her serious side. We all see that when she competes.” The Colgate University-bound Martinson is the daughter of Marty, a former football player at Yale, and Monica, a Brown graduate. Monica was Anne’s first volleyball drill mate in the Martinson back yard, where they engaged in pepper sessions. Monica played competitive volleyball (as a outside hitter) and basketball in her youth and is the youngest of 13 children in her family. “I have 57 first cousins,” Anne Martinson says. “Insane.” Martinson felt one emotion — nervousness — when Monica signed her then 11-year-old daughter up for a 12s team at Wildcat Juniors Volleyball Club. “I didn’t know anyone,” Anne recalls. Athletic peers got to know her. Club coaches appreciated her contributions in matches. The nervousness subsided and later disappeared. A comfort level emerged. Her confidence grew with each practice session, with each match. Martinson was a member of a pair of Wildcat Juniors fifth-place, age-group teams (15 Black and 18 Black) at national tournaments. Front-row player Ford and LA senior defensive specialist/libero Annie Magner also hit the courts for that 18 Black crew. Away from the side-outs and spikes and tips, Martinson enjoys walking the family dog, a yellow Lab named Duke, along a beach in Lake Forest. Duke turns three soon. “Playful,” Martinson says of the pet. “Very playful. He jumps on everybody, which is kind of bad.” A better-than-good friend of Martinson is her older brother, Peter, a Bucknell University freshman and former Loyola Academy Maroon hockey player. “He’s my best friend,” the sister says. “We’re the same person. He’s witty. He makes me laugh. He’s funny. “Even funnier,” she adds, “than Jimmy Fallon.”

we’ll get the next point!” Martinson, the volleyball player, sets, kills, blocks, digs, serves aces. Busy, busy. Productive, productive. Martinson’s primary role, as a team leader? “Spread positivity,” she says. “I do that if I sense our team is down or stressed. I’m loud. I call the plays. I’m up; I have to be up. I smile a lot because it calms my teammates down. If it’s hectic [in a match], my teammates know I’m chill, and they know they can look to me to help them relax.” Loyola Academy’s match against visiting De La Salle turned tense at the end of the second set on September 18. LA’s Ramblers had won the first set, 25-17, and taken a seemingly comfortable 24-16 lead. Match, more or less, over, right? Not to the Meteors from Chicago. De La Salle won the next 10 points — saving eight match points along the way — to secure the second set and force a third. It then jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the clinching set and never trailed. De La Salle exited the court in Wilmette with a 17-25, 26-24, 25-21 victory. Martinson finished with three kills, two aces and a block, in addition to a number of assists and digs. Her first ace started a string of four service points in the first set, with

Fixture Kuhn ‘nails’ indispensable role on New Trier’s boys soccer team

As several New Trier High School boys soccer players hauled away a heavy, unwieldy fire hydrant — the traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the New Trier-Evanston match — New Trier senior center-back Andrew Kuhn, with help from Trevians assistant coach Chris Van Den Berg, searched for a considerably lighter and thinner item last week in Northfield. Kuhn had misplaced his 12-inch steel spike nail. “It represents our team mantra,” Kuhn said from a spot behind the team bench, following NT’s 3-0 defeat of Evanston’s visiting Wildkits

his high school years. “It’s beautiful when the ball is moving quickly and accurately, and we’re all playing hard and working together. We like that style of play. We've all bought in.” Kuhn was sold on Will Felitto’s approach to soccer, on a number of levels, last fall. A 2018 New Trier graduate and current Williams College freshman, Felitto was a center-forward for NT’s 19-4 squad in 2017. “My soccer mentor. He was such a great player for us last year,” recalled Kuhn, whose pursuit of college soccer is like a 50-50 ball: up in the air. “Will respected the other teams. He was great about checking in with our younger players, making sure they were OK, being there for them if they had a concern. Will, along with the other seniors, made my junior season a memorable one.” Don’t let Kuhn’s seriousness on soccer pitches fool you into thinking he must also be dead-serious in street clothes. The young man never hesitates to let his comedic side surface when a situation calls for lightheartedness. “There is a goofy side to Andrew,” Ravenscraft said, adding Kuhn is a model varsity player based on the way he comports himself in match action. “He’s got that dry wit. He comes up with a funny one-liner now and then, shows us his wry smile. But that’s a really important side. You want guys on a team who know how beneficial a sense of humor can be throughout a season.” Kuhn, a triplet (with Helen and Chris), doesn’t mess around as a pianist. The athlete in the feetcentric sport tickles the ivories with his hands. Regularly. He still takes piano lessons and practices 10-15 minutes a day. Or an hour, if he has to get ready to perform at a recital.

“I go to bed at night [on the eve of NT matches] and sleep better, knowing Andrew [Kuhn] will be there for us on set pieces. He’s nails. He’s tough.”

The 6-foot-4, 185pounder from Wilmette noticed Van Den Berg had found Kuhn’s nail. New Trier’s hammer on set pieces was whole again. “Good luck guarding him,” Trevians soccer coach Matt Ravenscraft said, referring to the assets — height, savvy, grit and fearlessness — Kuhn employs on set pieces. “His technical abilities fly under the radar too often. He’s tough.” All three of Kuhn’s goals this fall have come off set pieces. He netted the late match-tying goal in a 3-3 tie with visiting Glenbrook North on August 30.

Fun-loving Adams touts sale’s serious purpose BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Annie Adams sits in a booth at Northfield Restaurant. It’s a September morning. The 51-yearold from Wilmette should be wincing. Her right leg, wrapped in a cumbersome brace, rests on most of her seat. Her right foot dangles from an edge of the seat. The foot poses as a potential hazard for any waitress. For any passerby. But Adams is laughing — while recounting how she tore the labrum in her right hip. The injury required her to undergo surgery on August 14. “I was at Orangetheory Fitness [in Glenview], doing a rowing challenge,” she says. “I wanted to set the rowing record. I’m competitive. That’s probably how I hurt it, though I did feel something in the hip later, after hopping onto a table for a facial.” Adams produces more laughter. A former three-sport (lacrosse, field hockey, swimming) athlete at Kenyon College in Ohio, Adams — a four-time NCAA Division III AllAmerican in lacrosse — once used a mountain bike to complete the second leg in a triathlon. “It was legal to ride that kind of bike in the race,” Adams says. “Legal and foolish.” But nothing will top the true, hilarious story she shares after ordering a Diet Coke and a plate of chocolate chip pancakes. Adams approached what she thought was her Honda Pilot one day. She opened the driver’s side door and was just about to enter the vehicle. One problem: the Pilot wasn’t hers. Another problem: the owner of that Pilot was sitting in the driver’s seat. “My husband [Chris] has told me, ‘You should have a blog detailing all of the silly things that have happened in your life,’ ” says Adams, the mother of daughter Alex, a junior at New Trier High School, and son Dodge, an NTHS freshman. “You have to have a sense of humor,” adds Adams, a former Class Clown at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, and the owner — at the age of 16 — of a mustard-colored Ford Maverick. “Humor is good,” she continues. “I live in the moment. I enjoy whatever comes my way.” Annie Adams turns serious. It’s time to talk rummage. It’s why she was willing to hobble and then sit awkwardly for a meal and an interview. In January she was named director of rummage for next month’s 94th Fall Rummage Sale at Christ Church Winnetka. Since 2000, the sale has distributed nearly $2 million in Benevolence Grants to local groups, including St. Leonard’s Ministries, Chicago Training Center, Family Matters Rogers Park and Erika’s Lighthouse in Winnetka. More than 80 charities applied this year to be recipients of the sale’s net proceeds. Adams and her staff approved 65. “Our priorities, when we considered the applications, were to make sure people are fed, clothed and sheltered,” Adams says. “We call this sale, ‘Shopping with a purpose.’ You shop. Christ Church Winnetka gives. We give back to the earth by keeping items in use and out of landfills. Decrease waste, get it down toward zero — that’s our sale’s goal. But we’re also giving

back to the community. “People are in need,” she adds. “They won’t be forgotten.” Fall Rummage at Christ Church will feature 31 departments. Adams figures it will take two weeks to set it all up. Shoppers typically line up for it as early as 5 a.m. for a sale that opens at 7 a.m. Items from Patagonia, North Face, Johnnie-O, Lululemon, Prada and Moncler will fill the French Room. “People come from all over to shop at our rummage sale,” Adams, a North Shore resident since 2006, says. “We’ve had people from Hawaii, from Canada. What I love about our rummage is that it’s more than a sale; it’s also about changing lives for the better. Every job I’ve had has been special because of the people around me. “I love projects that require collaborations.” Adams was an account supervisor and senior account executive for Bozell Public Relations from 1996-98. She partnered with senior staffers to create the “Milk Mustache” and “Pork, The Other White Meat” healthcare communication campaigns. She served on the strategic council of the Rice Oil & Environmental Company. She was a Camp Night 2016 co-chair for the North Shore Board of Northwestern University Settlement House. The board’s annual gala and auction supported House in the Wood Camp in Delavan, Wisconsin. Adams’ mother, Jody Charlton, taught middle school PE and started a field hockey program in Hudson, Ohio. Annie’s father, Dave Charlton, turned 80 this year and recently informed his daughter, “I did only 60 pushups today.”

“I got my sense of humor from my dad,” Annie says. “He’s always been ambitious, with great people skills. My mom is creative and soft-spoken, a little bit of an introvert. But she’s highly competitive, with a huge heart. She lives for her five grandchildren and puts everybody before herself. My mom told me the key to marital success is to think of a marriage as a solid tree and to remember that a tree has branches — the branches represent interests. You need to develop interests to keep the marriage fresh.” Annie’s good friend Emily set Annie up on a date with a man named Chris, a FedEx pilot, in early 1999. They got to know each other in a restaurant, talking for three hours before finally ordering dinner. Chris proposed to Annie on a Long Island lifeguard stand on the Fourth of July in 2000. “I thought he was going to break up with me then,” a chuckling Adams recalls. “He took out a ring instead, and the big earrings I was wearing somehow flew off me. We later found them in the sand.” Alex and Dodge are her precious ones today. “My kids are smarter than I ever was,” Adams says. “They’re driven, good kids. I hope I’ve taught them to be kind. I also hope I’ve raised them to thrive in their chosen environments. Family is the important thing, my main thing. “Family,” she adds, “helps me stay centered and grounded.”
