Winnetka-based Special Gifts Theatre (SGT) uses the stage as a platform to develop social skills, speech/language skills and self-confidence for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Erickson Woods in Winnetka (1643 Willow Road) will serve as the stage — a rather scenic, cavernous one, with nature taking care of the sound and lighting — September 30 to raise funds and awareness for the educational and therapeutic nonprofit. Community members are invited to either race in a certified and chip-timed 5K run or participate in a family-friendly 3K walk through the forest preserve at Erickson Woods. The event starts at 9 a.m. and concludes with a finisher party and performance by SGT’s Traveling Troupe. An awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 10 a.m. SGT students and peer mentors have been the eager forces behind the 5K run & 3K walk planning efforts. The students came up with the T-shirt colors, designed the logo and continue

For the past four years, Pitch In mentors, students and families have used a dedicated resource room located inside Lawndale Academy as their home base. When faced with the prospect of constructing a second resource room in Pitch In’s new location at Yates Elementary in Humboldt Park, Sarah Wood enlisted the help of a North Shore interior decorator, Ash Interiors’ Rosemary Worley, who donated her services to the project. Tasked with renovating a former woodshop classroom into a bright, inviting, home-away–fromhome for students, Worley set to work sourcing desks, tables, chairs and soft furnishings to create a flexible multi-function space to suit Pitch In’s programming needs. Reaching out to her network of painters, plumbers, carpenters and upholsterers, Worley was able to transform the disused, cinder block workshop and an adjacent outdoor space into a vibrant room for middle-schoolers to meet and learn. Worley says from 10-15 companies and tradespeople — including Chalet Nursery in Wilmette and Brook Lawler of The Flower Shop in Glencoe — donated or deeply discounted their products and services to meet Pitch In’s budget. Worley even managed to commission two murals from acclaimed Humboldt Park-based mural artist Antonio Beniquez, who offered his talents at a substantial discount. ‘There wasn’t a single person I asked to help who said no,” Worley notes. Working the ‘Night’ shift An interview with Wilmette author Jessica Hopper BY GREG SHAPIRO THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
pursued it. It’s such a foreign language to me. I wouldn’t rule it out for the future, but it’s not my idiom.
Like Carl Sandburg, Nelson Algren and Gwendolyn Brooks, the Chicago writers Jessica Hopper references in her new memoir, Night Moves (University of Texas Press, 2018), she makes the “neon wilderness” of the city a main character. Divided into three sections, spanning a five-year time period, between 2004 and 2009, Night Moves is a vivid Polaroid snapshot of an urban center in transition. Hopper read from her new book last month at Women & Children First Books in Chicago. She will do the same at Empty Bottle Book Club in Chicago October 29.
GS: Bicycles play a prominent role in the book. Do you still ride, and if so, what are you riding these days? JH: I still have my same crappy bike. I had a very beloved bike that got stolen in about 2005. Within a few weeks it had been replaced by the new bike I talk about in the book. The new bike in the book is still my old bike. It’s a little less ratty now. My husband did a good job of securing these rickety bike baskets on the back. It’s definitely got some new things. But it’s probably older than I am! I still ride it around the mean streets of Wilmette, but I can’t tote my children to school on the back of the thing.
I spoke with Hopper shortly before the publication of the book. GS: Jessica, I’d like to begin by asking you to say something about the purpose of dating the pieces in Night Moves, as well as the book’s chronology. Jessica Hopper: We sort of went back and forth, my editor and I, about whether or not to include the dates. To me, I was less interested in having a kind of particular arc. I really just wanted to have it more like a mood. We went with the dates because I did want to have a sense of different spaces of progression — from dreaming of being a writer to actualizing some of that dream.
GS: As a whole, Night Moves is a love letter to Chicago — as you say “seven kinds of in love with Chicago” — but never more so than in “American City, I Love You,” which is dated March 3, 2004, making it one of the oldest pieces in the book. Would it be fair to say that that piece played a part as inspiration for the book itself? JH: My falling in love with Chicago and discovering the city and having a proactive interest in discovering the city and its history a little bit better definitely orients from that time. But I think the book is a document of that span.
GS: As a reader, I detected two distinct writer’s voices employed by you in your books, The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic and Night Moves. Of those two voices, is one more of a true representation of you as a person? JH: The writing that is in Night Moves is, in some ways, my natural style. The writing that you see in my critical and journalistic writing, more than in my journal writing, per se, I’m trying to make a persuasive argument to the general public. It’s definitely a different sort of thing. I think where they meet is at an interest in fine detail. I think they overlap in how I think. Night Moves is maybe a little bit more of expression of self, whereas the criticism is more a consideration of other people’s lives and work. But they’re both very much steeped in being Midwestern, my feminism, my curiosity and my fandom. I think they’re both expressions of that. GS: The Girls’ Guide to Rocking was published in 2009 and The First Collection of Criticism by a Female Living Rock Critic was published in 2015. Were you working on Night Moves at the same time as those other books or did its genesis come later? JH: Its genesis came in the wake of The Collection… In part because I was working with my

friend Alice (Merrill) to create an archive of my work. We were finding, in putting together the pieces for the criticism collection, they had appeared in a dozen or more different publications. We were creating an index of all my work; whether it was fanzines or print publications or writing from blogs or one-off fanzines I was doing when I was going on tour. In the process of that, Alice noticed that I had a lot of writing about Chicago, which didn’t really fit with the collection book. We held onto that idea until after the collection book got out the door. We turned to what were other pieces of writing that were maybe in the wings [thinking we could cull from them]. Revisiting that, it works as a testament to a time and that seemed important to me to capture. GS: In the “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Ol’ Oak Tree” piece, you write about poetry. Do you write poetry, and did any of these pieces begin as poems?
JH: I don’t write poetry with any intention of it being poetry. As my friend Hanif (Abdurraqib) wrote in the blurb on the back cover, “It is a book of poems…”; it is also this and this. I was really flattered by his insistence. I know that some of the shorter pieces, people have mentioned that they are maybe poetic in form, with curious line breaks in them. I am an avid reader and consumer of poetry and so anything that appears in the book that seems to be in that form is very much under the influence of it. I’m usually reading two books of poetry concurrent to anything else I’m reading. I think there have been one or two times in my life when I got interested in writing poetry, but when I did, I couldn’t judge at all that it was any good in the same way that I am able to discern with my other writing, where I go, “Well, this makes an argument that I can stand behind!” I had no idea whether it was valuable or elegant or conveyed anything meaningful. I never really have

GS: I’m glad you mentioned your children. As a mother, what do you think about the possibility of your children reading Night Moves someday? JH: Oh, you know! I will just live in that fear. My older son has read parts of, if not most of, Girls Guide to Rocking and had a whole line of questioning for me after that. He’s eight and very precocious. He knows that Night Moves is coming out and that he’s not allowed to read it. He read the front flap. As far as I know, his curiosity hasn’t taken him further. I would maybe let him read a redacted version of the book. There are certainly parts in there that might be a little scandalizing, until he’s in his late teens. My son is an avid reader and a writer and an appreciator of all sorts of different things. My hope for anybody who reads the book, whether they’re young or old, is that people who love the city can see and identify parts of the city and can connect with it. To me, it feels like it is a book about the dream of being a writer, the dream of being an artist and nursing that transitional space between the thing you’re dreaming of being and then beginning to actualize that dream. In some ways, I hope it is valuable to younger readers, but not my son, who is in third grade. GS: Have you started working on or thinking about your next book project? JH: I’m turning in a book proposal at the end of the month. Hopefully, I’ll be able to announce book number four in the next few weeks. I have a good sense of what my next three books are, which is maybe insane and ambitious. One thing about making a book — and other writers have certainly complained about this — is that you’ll be writing a book and as you are doing it there becomes another book within you that nags rather insistently. There are basically three other books. One of them is music historic, and there’s another memoir. That’s hopefully what’s on the horizon. It’s exciting to be working on the proposal for what will hopefully be my next book, which is not in any way drawn on my own personal past. I would like to be out of my past someday. Revisit Lake Bluff ’s storied history as a summer resort on Sunday, September 30, as the Lake Bluff History Museum hosts its “Camp Meetings, Chautauquas, Artists and Anarchists” docent-led walking tours. The tours start at 1 p.m. in front of The Lake Bluff Union Church, 525 E. Prospect Avenue in Lake Bluff, guiding participants through much of the area developed in the late 1800s by the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association—including the grounds on which the 500-room Hotel Irving and the site of the Camp Meeting Tabernacle. Participants will learn about the Camp Meetings, the Chautauqua Movement, and a period in the early 1900s when Lake Bluff was a destination attracting an eclectic mix THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
of writers, poets, musicians, artists and anarchists. William Penhallow Henderson, Alice Corbin Henderson, Sherwin Cody, Margaret Anderson, Marguerite Kreutzberg, Vachel Lindsey, Emma Goldman, and Joe Howard are some of those who spent time in the area when Lake Bluff was known as a resort and artist’s colony. This tour is one of three the museum conducts each year: “Uptown, All Around the Town” focuses on the commercial district and surrounding area and “Camp Meeting Cottages and Country Houses” includes the history of camp meeting cottages and country homes built in Lake Bluff ’s days as a summer resort. Private tours can be arranged through the Lake Bluff History Museum for groups interested in one or more of the series. The Lake Bluff History Museum researches, preserves and shares area history
through a variety of activities and events, including programs like these tours. The museum displays tell stories of Lake Bluff ’s past and its archives provide individuals with access to documents, records, photographs and other materials preserved in the museum archives. Multiple tour groups leave from the Union Church, 525 East Prospect, at 10minute intervals with the first tour group leaving at 1 pm. The tour is approximately 90 minutes in length. Tickets cost $10. Payment will be collected from participants when they check in for the event. Reservations are requested as space is limited. Fargo north on the list of elite U.S. rowers New Trier senior returns home with a World Junior silver medal BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Charlie Fargo’s left ankle was in a boot when he showed up at a USRowing Identification Camp for U19 rowers in Chicago this past spring. Now a senior at New Trier High School, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound Fargo — an invitee at a USRowing High Performance Camp in 2017 — had injured the ankle while playing basketball for the We Are Better Than You team in the New Trier intramural championship game in February. The other team was a little bit better, winning

by a point. Fargo had one request for the national rowing coaches at that ID Camp: “Please consider me.” They did. They invited him to participate among 65 other Selection Camp invitees in southern California, beginning on June 13. Twenty-four would be named to compete at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, in August. “I’m guessing he was the last one invited,” says Charlie’s father, Jamie Fargo, who serves as a New Trier assistant boys rowing coach. “With the kind of ankle injury he had, I didn’t think he’d have a chance to receive an invitation. But one of Charlie’s coaches at the High Performance camp talked to other U.S. coaches and must have convinced them that Charlie, when healthy and fit, moves boats fast, moves winning boats.” Charlie Fargo survived a cut at Selection Camp. And then another. His sound technique and combination of explosiveness and endurance forced the decision makers to keep him. Plus, Fargo has “a very good sense of balance and a very good boat feel,” his father asserts. On July 9, Charlie Fargo, still feeling occasional ankle discomfort, found out he would row from Seat 3 for the junior national men’s eight crew.

“It was a tough atmosphere,” says Jamie, who, as a junior rower at Harvard University, helped the Crimson defeat Washington University’s Huskies for the 1983 national championship in Cincinnati. “It was like a reality TV show. “Guys,” he adds, “were getting voted off the island.” Nearly one month later, Fargo and his U19 mates flew to central Europe to row, row, row their boat against the world’s best in 2,000-meter tests. Fargo’s boat took the silver with a time of 5:38.34 — a smidge behind Great Britain’s victorious 5:37.56. “We were so exhausted afterward,” says Fargo, a member of New Trier’s two-time reigning Midwest Championship rowing team. “My legs, they felt like mush. I was close to collapsing. The sport isn’t easy; it hurts a lot. But I love it because I love seeing what my limits are, even when I’m training on a rowing machine. “That was tough, being on the podium and seeing the Brits’ excitement,” adds the Winnetkan, whose wingspan measures 6-feet-6. “But we agreed that was the best race of all of our
lives. We had pushed ourselves, and technically it felt great.” A 7-year-old Charlie Fargo found himself in a two-man boat (or a double) with his father. The rowing baptism took place on the north branch of the Chicago River. Charlie was a basketball, baseball and soccer player at the time, as well as a track and field athlete. “I noticed a curiosity from him in the boat, an openness,” Jamie says. “I thought, ‘This could resonate with him.’ He wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t obsessing with what could go wrong. At first, probably the only thing going through his mind was, ‘Gee, these are long oars.’ ” Charlie Fargo — whose older brother, Ian, rows competitively at Grand Valley State University in Michigan — revisited the sport of rowing in the summer before the eighth grade, at a sculling camp in Craftsbury, Vermont. The setting was beautiful. His interest in rowing grew. And then it took off in his freshman year, when he and his freshman team rowing cohorts at New Trier finished third at the Midwest Championships. His competitive fire shows no signs of abating. Fargo wants to row in college,

like his father did. He wants to row beyond his college years, like his father does. “Jamie and I are incredibly proud of Charlie,” says Charlie’s mother, Stephanie, an ardent nutrition enthusiast. “I’m glad he found the sport. He’s made friends, instant friends, through rowing. The competitive son I see in boats is nothing like the son I see when he’s not rowing. He is so mellow, low key, down-to-earth, easygoing. Charlie likes to laugh and joke around. “We crack each other up.” That severe ankle injury was no laughing matter to either of Charlie’s parents. But Jamie Fargo had encouraged Charlie to compete in activities out of the water. Charlie played hoops for New Trier’s freshman program in 2015-16, meaning the rowing machines in the Fargo basement got somewhat of a break. Dad Fargo would fully support Charlie if he were to lace ’em up for another intramural basketball season this winter. “High school athletes these days burn out too often if they focus too much on one sport,” Jamie says. “I’m all for Charlie playing a sport, any sport, for fun when he’s not in a boat.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Abuzz with resounding winners HP-NT girls tennis dual showcases North Shore talent BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It’s hard enough returning a first serve in a No. 1 doubles match without having to deal with a relentless distraction. As Highland Park High School senior tennis ace Caitlin Goldberg prepared to field a first-set serve from the ad side of a court last weekend in Winnetka, her personal space was invaded by a bee. It darted this way and that way, up and down, all around. It buzzed. Goldberg had no time to ask for a timeout while attempting to dodge the menace, so she unleashed a brief yelp, performed a desperate dance near a baseline and flailed her arms — all while a tennis ball, served by a New Trier Trevian, approached her quickly. With one eye on the yellow ball and another on the flying insect, a smiling and wincing Goldberg somehow managed to return the serve fairly cleanly. “Caitlin can focus pretty well,” junior Samara Michael, Goldberg’s doubles partner, understated afterward. Goldberg and Michael took care of the stinging business in the second set on September 15, using their rackets to strike emphatic winners in an impressive 6-4, 6-2 defeat of New Trier’s Ali Benedetto and Emily Rhee at A.C. Nielsen Center. Goldberg’s heavy groundstrokes often allowed Michael to finish points at the net. Goldberg normally plays singles; Michael normally plays doubles with Monique Brual. “We get each other pumped up,” Goldberg said. “I get excited when I play doubles with Samara, because she likes to attack and she’s such a good volleyer.” The pair of Giants sprinted to a 5-0 lead in the second set, dropped two games in a row and then got it together again in the eighth game. New Trier’s Benedetto, a junior, was half of the third-place doubles team (with current Harvard freshman Amia Ross) at the Class 2A state tennis tournament last fall and won five consecutive matches in the back draw of a national clay court tournament this past summer. “Phenomenal,” first-year Highland Park head girls tennis coach Jig Vora said of the level of play on the No. 1 doubles court. “What a great day for tennis. Unbelievable. “And it’s awesome we get to play at such a great facility like Nielsen,” added Vora, who succeeded longtime Giants coach Steve Rudman. The programs battled in 33 matches (22 singles, 11 doubles) in a rare varsity/JV combination dual last weekend. Because each player played singles and doubles, it had a college-dual feel to it. Players and spectators alike couldn’t help but feel they were at a tennis festival, given the volume of the meet’s matches. NT, which tied for sixth place at state in 2017, won 26 of the contests on a warm, sun-splashed day. HP placed fourth at state last year, and all six state qualifiers from that Giants

squad competed at Nielsen last weekend. Goldberg, a three-time state qualifier and a hard-hitting lefty, faced Benedetto, a steady righty, in the No. 1 singles match last weekend. Benedetto triumphed this time, with a 6-2, 6-3 decision. “I was really patient,” the Trev said. “I know Caitlin’s game well. She has a really good forehand. I had to work the points, move her around, mix in some slices and drop shots. But I wanted to play aggressively, too. “I tried to get to the net at least once in each game.” Rhee also struck shots in one of the day’s most competitive singles matches. She and Highland Park’s Kathryn Murphy put on quite a show for a vocal throng of onlookers at No. 6 singles. Murphy edged Rhee 7-5 in a first-set tiebreaker and took the second set, 7-5. The match featured lengthy, high-level points. Murphy won slightly more of the bigger points than her opponent did in the taut clash. NT’s other victors in singles were Emily Dale (No. 2), Ashtin Hara (No. 3), Lily Bhote (No. 7), Claire Gottreich (No. 8), Macy Zaban (No. 9), Olivia Zaban (No. 10), Lily Christopher (No. 11), Keira Botjer (No. 12), Alexis Woodrick (No. 13),
Olivia Nickel (No. 15), Olivera Nikolich (No. 16), Darcie Kim (No. 18), Eleanor Steger (No. 19), Anna Fellman (No. 20), Mia Keegan (No. 21) and Beth Canel (No. 22). HP’s Brual, Halle Michael, Liv Zucker and Jenna Jaffe won at Nos. 4, 5, 14 and 17 singles, respectively. New Trier netted nine doubles wins: Dale/Carly Schreier (No. 3), Gottreich/Olivia Zaban (No. 4), Lily Bhote/Woodrick (No. 5), Emma Bhote/ Christopher (No. 6), Botjer/Maddie Martin (No. 7), Nickel/Nikolich (No. 8), Kim/Cecilia McNeely (No. 9), Keegan/Fellman (No. 10) and Canel/ Steger (No. 11). Brual and Lily Tiemeyer (No. 2) earned HP’s other doubles triumph. Third-generation restaurateur Doug Roth has a college-aged stepdaughter named Hunter. But he has never been a fan of the word “stepdaughter.” “I call her my bonus daughter or daughter 2.0,” says the 63-year-old Roth, who married his best friend, Jennifer, more than five years ago and has twin sons, 26-year-olds Jonathan and Justin, from his first marriage. Jonathan is a United States Coast Guard service officer; Justin is a product specialist with Volkswagen/Audi. Doug Roth 2.0 was born in 2000, the year in which he chose to end his partnership with restaurateurs Larry and Mark Levy at the highly successful Bistro 110 on Pearson Street in Chicago. “I had to reinvent myself at that point in my life,” the 1973 New Trier East High School graduate and Glencoe resident says from a seat at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Highland Park, where he ordered three poached eggs, a half of a grapefruit, crispy bacon and an English muffin. “Mark and Larry,” he adds, “were fabulous partners. going to open another Bistro 110?’ ” Roth — the son of the late Don Roth, a restaurant industry icon who ran the show at Don Roth’s Blackhawk in Wheeling, and the grandson of the late Otto Roth, who opened The Blackhawk in Chicago in 1920 — has been busier and more productive than ever in the second phase of his professional life. He is founder/president of Playground Hospitality, an innovative consulting venture that helps restaurants stand out, stay relevant and maintain their unique character. A restaurant finding its soul — essence, not the food — is as critical as a restaurant providing consistency for its diners. A Tulane University graduate with a degree in economics, after setting out to major in pre-med, Roth is also working with deans at his alma mater in New Orleans to launch an entrepreneurial hospitality program. It’s in line to start in 2019. “Can you believe New Orleans, with its reputation for wonderful food and restaurants, does not have an A-plus hospitality program?” an incredulous Roth says. “My endeavor at Tulane has a lot

do with getting full value back from a college education.” Given the enduring spirit behind Roth’s Playground Hospitality enterprise, students in entrepreneurial hospitality classes at Tulane will find themselves spending more time outside the traditional classroom setting than they will in it. “A typical university environment emphasizes textbooks, technology. Very dry,” Roth says. “Playgrounds and camps are settings I found fun and much more energetic than time spent in a chair, listening to lectures. When you’re a kid, in a sandbox, you’re learning to play well, build things, interact with others. “I’m back in a ‘playground’ today, and I’m having a good time, giving back.” Patrons at Grandpa Otto’s Blackhawk in the first half of the 20th century returned for the music performed at the restaurant as much as they did for the edible fare. Mel Tormé sang there regularly. Doris Day made her first appearance at The Blackhawk with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats in 1940. Bob, younger brother of Bing, wrote the song “Big Noise from Winnetka” there. Chico Marx, of the Marx Brothers, and his orchestra entertained there. The restaurant later became known for its spinning salad bowl, a staple Don Roth brought to his establishment in Wheeling. Don Roth’s Blackhawk opened in 1969 and closed in 2009. “My dad,” Doug Roth says, “created steakhouses long before their time. He had an uncanny ability to forecast dining trends and understand what people wanted before they knew what they wanted. He had a marvelous sense of humor. He was beloved by his employees. He was extremely ethical — one of the most important traits he possessed. I, too, would like to think I have that trait. “When you have a successful parent, like my father, it can be daunting. I followed in my dad’s footsteps, but I did it differently; I chose a different road map. You can figure out other ways to do things in an industry and still find success.” Doug’s mother, Ann, died late last year at the age of 95. She enjoyed attending operas and symphony concerts and going out with her friends every Saturday night. “My mom was beautiful, inside and outside,” her son says. “She was extremely well-read and bright. She epitomized what it meant to be a true lady. Having recently gone back to her small hometown [in Mississippi], a visit that gave me a better understanding of who she was, I am looking to create something in her honor. Maybe something related to the high school she attended.” Doug Roth was a board member of Honor Flight Chicago for seven years. The organization flies war veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day of honor. His father served as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in World War II. He is active with the SD Gunner Fund, which was created to assists veterans and disabled children with the financial expense of owning service animals. The Maine-based Travis Mills Foundation is a nonprofit that was formed to benefit wounded veterans and their families. In 2017 Roth joined chefs from Chicago and the East Coast in Maine
“to create an incredible culinary experience” for ailing (physically and mentally) veterans of the

conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “The idea was to provide a ‘wow’ experience for the veterans,” Roth says. “We did that. They had never experienced anything like it. We took pictures of veterans. Also in the pictures were Tomahawk steaks and bottles of Dom Pérignon.” Roth swam and played golf and tennis in high school. He plugged, plugged, plugged away as an athlete. “I was an average athlete who worked really hard to become an above-average athlete,” he recalls. Today he bikes and swims and hits the weights. He’s a straight shooter, a man who believes if you’re going to do something, anything, do it the right way or move on to something else. Doug Roth also loves to travel. “In today’s market,” his Playground Hospitality website (playgroundhospitality.com) warns, “standing still is like moving backwards.” Roth is in a good place — make that, a good ‘playground’. “I am looking forward to playing in this ‘playground’ for quite a while,” he says. “End of story.”
