North Shore old-timers often wax nostalgic about hanging out at soda fountains, dime stores and penny arcades. They had such options in the golden age of small town retail, well before strip malls, big-box stores and the Internet radically altered the streetscape of American suburbs. But all is not lost for those who yearn for a return to simpler times. Hoffman Commercial Real Estate (HCRE) is betting big on small town, main street retail with a new family-friendly entertainment concept aimed at giving kids a destination to play, eat and gather with friends in the heart of downtown Winnetka. “We realized Winnetka is missing a hangout that’s not a coffee shop,” HCRE CEO Greg Hoffman says. “Kids,” he adds, “need a place downtown to meet up and socialize.” Construction is underway for an entertainment center inside the multi-tenant Winnetka Walk complex at 552 Lincoln Avenue, where the independent toy store Beat Street has already opened, and plans for a new video arcade and gelato store are underway. When Lake Forest Preservation Foundation (LFPF) held its annual house and garden tour last year, the focus was on architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and his enduring impact on our city. This year, all eyes are on the work of one of Shaw’s most devoted protégées — Lake Forest-born Stanley D. Anderson. Known for his Country Georgian style, Anderson’s impact on Lake Forest residential and commercial architecture will be celebrated with a Sunday, September 23 tour themed around Anderson’s work at the end of the “estate” era. Educated at Lake Forest College and then the École des Beaux-Arts in France, Ander-
son began working for Shaw in 1918 before going on to establish his own firm in 1924, setting the stage for a new kind of design in our city. His vision was decidedly modern, giving his European-infused “small” estate houses the latest technologies of the time. Over the next 60 years, Stanley D. Anderson and Associates was responsible for more than 30 public and commercial buildings and nearly 200 fine residences — including Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest Hospital, Lake Forest Bank and Tempel Farms. Homes designed by Anderson, as well as those designed by his associates during the initial development of the 1925 to1930-era Deerpath Hill Estates subdivision, will be featured on the walking tour, along with a bonus house — the Arthur Dixon III house off Green Bay Road. Current LFPF President Jim Opsitnik
moved into the home Anderson built for himself in 1984. He says it’s been an honor to be able to care for the architectural treasure. Paul Bergmann, archivist of the Stanley D. Anderson Archives and author of a yetto-be released book about the architect, arranged a meeting with the Opsitniks and his father Bill Bergmann who was a partner of Anderson. “Paul’s dad was the last surviving architect who worked with Stanley Anderson,” explains Opsitnik, who led the helm at LFPF during recent renovations of the Frost & Granger-designed train station at Market Square. “I can’t recall how we got connected with him but one weekend Paul’s dad came over with the original blueprints for our house. Shaw’s signature touches, individual houses reflect English Tudor, Colonial and French Eclectic styles. It was Lake Forest’s first such development and set the tone for those that would come. The annual tour is the primary fundraising event for LFPF, with proceeds used to continue the educational, advocacy and preservation work of the foundation. It is a long-time favorite of native Lake Foresters and newcomers alike. The Lake Forest Preservation Foundation Architecture Home and Garden tour will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 23, followed by an outdoor reception at Stanley D. Anderson’s former Lake Forest home. Ticket pickup on the day of the tour is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Gorton Community Center’s west entrance. The North Shore-based company hopes to create a vibrant hub to attract local families and visitors to the downtown area — foot traffic likely to spill over to other retailers and restaurants in Winnetka’s central business district. Hoffman says the company polled the opinions of children in the community, taking note of their current routines and interests. Designs for the entertainment concept also include a central courtyard space where parents can relax while their young children explore. “The sheltered courtyard,” Hoffman says, “will make Winnetka Walk a comfortable and appealing community hub throughout the year.” Adelheidi’s — HCRE’s Naples, Florida-based enterprise — will open in Winnetka Walk in October, selling organic, gluten-free gelato and baked goods. “Adelheidi’s is as healthy as ice cream and snack food can be,” Hoffman says. Pending approval from the Winnetka Village Council at its next regular meeting on September 18, HCRE will also begin construction on a classic Beat Street recently relocated to the Winnetka Walk complex.

Beat Street, the third component in Hoffman’s new entertainment concept, opened its Winnetka Walk doors to customers in late August. After learning of Hoffman’s plans, Beat Street owner and longtime Winnetka resident Julie Windsor decided to relocate her toy boutique from Park Drive in Kenilworth back to Winnetka, where it opened its doors for the first time more than 15 years ago. “I was intrigued by this new concept,” Windsor says. “I like that it gives people a place to go, instead of just offering retail.” Windsor says Beat Street is a toy emporium based on an old-fashioned dime store, featuring “off the beaten path” retro-style candy, vintage collectibles, puzzles, games, accessories and arts and crafts ranging from $5-$20. “Beat Street is more about the experience of discovering something than just acquiring it,” saysWindsor, who taught art in the Chicago Public School system for 10 years. Windsor is planning a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for Beat Street, in partnership with the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce, on September 19. “We’re excited to be back in Winnetka,” Windsor says.

CHECK OUT LIBRARIAN’S BOOK Bigelow’s Drum Roll, Please snares young readers’ attention BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Wilmette Public Library Youth Services librarian Lisa Bigelow began writing her second book more than a decade ago. This summer, when Drum Roll, Please finally came out, audiences were ready for a middle grade children’s book with an LGBT protagonist. Bigelow, 40, has been thrilled by the response to the book since its release in June. “I’ve been overjoyed,” she says. “I’ve had people tag me on Instagram, or tell me, ‘Hey, my kid just read this book.’ I’ve been hearing from boys, as well as girls.” Bigelow’s book follows Melly, a shy drummer whose parents are getting divorced, as she heads to Camp Rockaway for the summer. She has to navigate both a rift with her best friend and a crush on a girl—all while confronting her insecurities as a musician. “As our society becomes more understanding, open and tolerant of a variety of social issues, there’s a need for books for kids about kids like themselves,” says Steven Chudney, Bigelow’s agent. When she started writing the book, Bigelow recalls, there were LGBT-themed books for young adults, but none for the middle grade market. The
those are things that most of us have to deal with,” Bigelow says. “So, in that way, I think it winds up being somewhat universal.” Bigelow, a Skokie resident, grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and moved to the Chicago area in 2002. She says she drew on her experiences attending Girl Scout camp and taking classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music to write the book. “Sometimes people have this idea that librarians get to sit at a desk and read, which is not true,” Bigelow says with a laugh. But she makes a concerted effort to keep up with new children’s and young adult releases. And she started a program at Wilmette Public Library that encourages people to read a greater breadth of books. Bigelow read lots of fantasy books as a kid; the Narnia series was a favorite. More recently, she enjoyed Kelly Yang’s Front Desk, a book about first generation Chinese immigrants. Bigelow’s reading tastes have broadened over the years, but her writing process hasn’t changed much. She says both of her books were really hard to write. “I haven’t found it to get easier,” she admits. “I still stress out quite a bit.” For Drum Roll, Please, Bigelow had to update an earlier version of the story. Her agent helped her dust off the manuscript and revise it. “The basic and overall storyline is pretty much the same,” Chudney says. “The novel was mostly just polished and tightened.” No matter how well the book does, Bigelow still loves her day job. She says the library is a fun place to be—surrounded by books, watching kids grow up. “It’s a really active place at our library, something going on at all times,” she says. “At any moment, you don’t really know what’s going to happen next.”

No run of the Mill(s) recruit Lake Forest High School defensive lineman garnering plenty of worthy attention from top-notch programs BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
There’s football player Rylie Mills, and there’s polite teenager Rylie Mills. Both were on display September 7, when Mills, a junior defensive tackle/defensive end, and his Lake Forest High School football teammates hosted Mundelein High School’s Mustangs in a North Suburban Conference opener. The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder — the No. 99 on his jersey makes him appear even bigger in game action — overwhelmed Mustangs linemen and ball carriers all night in the Scouts’ 39-12 rout. It wasn’t just man vs. boys.

It was also boulder vs. pebbles. Redwood vs. plywood. Mills burst through the middle of Mundelein’s offensive line and wrapped his massive arms around junior running back Jack Dorfler in the first quarter. It was an abrupt wrestling takedown on a gridiron. No gain. Probably lots of pain. He later batted a pass, helped a couple of teammates finish a violent, clean play behind the line the scrimmage, made a tackle for a loss of four yards and disrupted countless other Mundelein plays with his athleticism, balance, strength, determination and presence. “He’s our biggest, strongest, hardest-working player,” Scouts football coach Chuck Spagnoli said after his squad’s first victory in 2018. “He wants to be successful. He’s better physically and mentally [than in ’17]. What I mean by mentally is, Rylie is much more secure of a player than he was as a sophomore.” Twenty-four college football programs had offered Mills a scholarship, as of September 7. Twenty-four. Look for that number to grow. Two of the programs: Clemson and reigning national champion Alabama. Mills attended the MichiganNotre Dame football game on a recruiting trip in South Bend, Indiana, earlier this month. He has attended three Notre Dame games to date, including two last fall. He plans to attend BYU-Wisconsin and Minnesota-Ohio State football games this fall. “He looks the part [big-time recruit], doesn’t he?” said Scouts assistant football coach Larry

game from the Scouts’ sideline last weekend for a media class assignment. He doesn’t know Mills very well, but he’s an avid sports fan who has sports thoughts. Elliott’s take on Mills: “Rylie is strikingly graceful for such a giant human being.” Polite Rylie Mills made an appearance after the Mundelein game. A handful of journalists wanted to speak with him, and he kindly asked each if he could do a couple of things before answering questions. About five minutes later, Mills made himself available but not before saying, “Thank you for being patient.” The Q & A began. It did not matter that he had probably heard some the questions at least a dozen times since the end of his sophomore season. He was patient and courteous and informative. In the middle of the interview session, Mills spotted Scouts senior running back Jacob Thomas exiting the locker room and shouted, “J.T., our running back!” Thomas had played a vital role in the win, rushing 26 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns. His second tally covered 75 yards and gave the hosts a 29-6 lead in the first minute of the third quarter. “Everybody did a great job tonight,” Mills said after LFHS improved to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the NSC and Mundelein fell to 1-2, 0-1. Indeed. Scouts Ethan Hunt, Mac Uihlein and Tommy Hanson each had an interception. Senior quarterback James Swartout finished 20-for-30 for 205 yards with a pair of TD passes — one to Breck Nowik for 45 yards and the other to Ryan Cekay for two yards. Cekay caught six passes for 68 yards; Nowik totaled 64 yards on five grabs; and senior tight end Crawford Bolton had five receptions for 49 yards. Senior linebacker Clayton Burton recorded two sacks. Coel Morcott’s tip of a pass preceded Hanson’s pick. Linebacker Will Wisniewski and defensive lineman Ben Marwede each had a hand in the first of the Scouts’ safeties. Placekicker Carter Hiam was 5-for-5 in extra points. Uihlein and Luca Pasinato combined for a sack. Mundelein went 0-for-2 in two-point attempts; Hanson and others stopped the first attempt, and Bill Avery and others thwarted the second. After fielding football-centric questions, polite Rylie Mills turned into fun-loving Rylie Mills as he answered queries that had nothing to do with football. “I play the guitar, a little bit,” he said of one of his pastimes. “I’m not terrible.” He has seen four episodes of The Office. “I’m a big fan of the show,” said the big man with a big smile. Cooking maven owns recipe for vibrant writing BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Mary Jo McMillin knew she wanted to work in a commercial kitchen. She wrote letters to professionals in the industry, hoping the words would sing her passion for cooking and thereby move each reader. The year was 1984. One wrote a letter back to McMillin. M y r t l e Allen, of Ballymaloe House in Ireland, invited McMillin to visit the country house and toil in the kitchen. “I washed lettuce, rolled pie crust,” recalls McMillin, 77, a native of rural western Colorado and a resident of Wilmette since 2008. “I later [in 1985-86, three months each year] worked at the Ballymaloe Cookery School. I knew it was the right place for me. I could feel it in my soul. Ballymaloe is in the middle of a farm. The people there are real. “Myrtle,” she adds, “responded to my letter. She became my mentor. She changed my life.” Writing and cooking. Cooking and writing. Both continue to play vital roles in McMillin’s life. She has written one book (Mary Jo’s Cuisine, Orange Frazer Press, 2007) about cooking. She named the cookbook after the French country restaurant she owned and operated in the college town of Oxford, Ohio, from 1986-2004. The book is more than a cookbook; it’s also filled with behind-the-scenes vignettes. It contains dashes of stories about her staff and dollops of passages about the staples to success (equipment, consistency, organization, etc.) under the roof of a stirring restaurant. “Constant hustle,” McMillin says of her

chef/restaurateur life. “Running a restaurant was like putting on a show in a theater.” McMillin has written another book (The

Njombe Road, Glass Lyre Press, LLC, 2017) in which the main character is, in essence, her writing — specifically, the 200-plus aerograms she typed to her parents while living and teaching (in 196364) in East and West Africa with her Colorado State College beau and first husband, the late Robert Wendel. Mary Jo and Bob were 10,000 miles away from Colorado as accepted applicants in Teachers for East Africa, a program sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development. The couple taught courses at a government boarding school for boys in Tanganyika (now Tanzania). An aerogram is a two-sided, singlespaced letter. McMillin’s aerograms describe, in vivid detail, what she experienced morning, noon and night. The typewriter she used was the size of a handbag, she reports. “My mother [the late Cleo] had kept all of the aerograms and sent them to me in 1998 or 1999,” McMillin says over a cappuccino at a Starbucks in Wilmette. “They were in three folders. I shared them with Jim [the late James Reiss, a poet and Mary Jo’s second husband], and he was the one who suggested to me to write the aerograms in the present tense for the book. Present tense creates an illusion that lets the reader observe the action as it unfolds. “Reading those aerograms after all those years, I couldn’t believe all I had forgotten.” But she was too busy at her restaurant at the time of the reunion with her written words to tackle a full-time writing project. McMillin writes, in the Introduction in The Njombe Road, “I kept the idea of a memoir on the back burner. After I sold my business and spent two y e a r s writing a cookbook, it was time to go back to the aerograms before their faint print vanished.” On the morning of November 23, 1963, Mary Jo and Bob sat in the dining room at the White Horse Inn in Iringa, Tanganyika, spooning segments of grapefruit. The hotel’s proprietor sprinted to couple’s table. He had news. Terrible news. Mary Jo and Bob followed him to his office. Ham radio blared an announcement. They clutched their napkins as they listened. “That’s where we found out JFK had been assassinated,”

McMillin says. In May 1964, McMillin taught two 80-minute English classes each school day at the boarding school. The windows in the classroom were glassless. “Occasionally,” she writes, “some of the school’s cows pass poking their heads in the windows.” What exactly is it like to be a 20-something American standing before a class of secondary school students in eastern Africa in the 1960s?
I kept the idea of a memoir on the back burner.
McMillin provides that answer, brilliantly, in her memoir: As I stand at the head of the class each day in my sneakers, socks, wool skirt, and sweater, I look down to see that only a few of the boys have shoes, much less pullovers. The desks and chairs are wobbly; the books are ragged. Most boys use twig and quill pens for writing. Much of the black is worn off our chalkboard, and a white dusty cloth serves as an eraser. I lean against a rickety table as the wind howls. When rain pounds on the metal roof, we can scarcely hear one another. You, the reader, are right there with the passing, curious cows, receiving an eyeful and an earful of the scene, thanks to McMillin, an artist. And a mother. And a grandmother. She moved to Wilmette 10 years ago to be closer to her son, David, and to her daughter, Catherine. Both live in Winnetka. David has twin daughters; Catherine has a 5-year-old son. “My daughter is reading my second book to her son,” says McMillin, who blogs at Mary Jo’s Kitchen (mjcuisine.wordpress.com) and cooks for her friends and for events at Christ Church-Winnetka, where she also sings in the choir. McMillin’s next mission is a stateside one. She would like, with permission, to enter a local school someday and address junior high students about a lost art. “The art of letter writing,” she says. “Where did it go? Where did journaling go? Kids are misspelling too many words. No one, it seems, knows how to make a sentence anymore. When I was young, buying stationery was an important thing, a big thing. I also bought fountain pens. I had a great English teacher in college. He made us write good, detailed sentences. “I’d write long letters to home and to my best friend. It’s what I loved to do.” That love endures.
