Highland Park residents gather to support community services BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A party at a liquor store typically means headaches for the neighbors. Highland Park’s first annual “Gather for Good” celebration aims for the opposite — an evening of cooking demonstrations, food, drinks and a raffle to support community services that benefit Highland Park. The Highland Park Community Foundation (HPCF) will host the event on Sept. 14 at Binny’s Beverage Depot in Highland Park. WLIT 93.9 FM radio host Melissa Forman will emcee, and councilwoman Alyssa Knobel will receive the Jack Blane Community Service Award for her civic and charitable efforts. “We understand and care deeply about the needs of our neighbors,” HPCF Chairman Nancy Mills said. “The HPCF serves as a dependable resource to address the most pressing issues facing nonprofits that operate locally.” Local businesses participating in the event range from Nothing Bundt Cakes and Carol’s Cookies to Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Viaggio. Tickets are $75. “It’s going to be a really fun, casual event,” HPCF Executive Director Terri Olian said. “The whole community is invited. It’s open to anybody.” The HPCF is an endowment fund that provides grants to local nonprofits. All recipients provide programs or services that improve the

continue their education or even get a job. By collaborating with the States Attorney, U.S. Attorney, FBI, and the Cook County Sheriff, Selah Freedom creates programs that helps them get their records expunged. Fisher has other points of pride with what she has created at Selah Freedom — beacons of hope for young women who have endured unimaginable suffering. For one, all the girls at Selah Freedom’s group home in Winnetka are working on their education and will graduate with at least a GED, with about 75 percent staying on a career college path. For those who choose not to pursue college, Selah has career partnerships with Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, Peet’s Coffee and Park Hyatt Chicago. The outcomes are beyond inspiring. As part of the research for this piece, we had the opportunity to correspond with a 19-year-old Selah Freedom client named Julie. Like many others, she grew up in a Midwest middle class family — hiding sexual abuse from a trusted person close to her before running away from home at age 13.

“What happened to me became my identity, as I felt trapped with no way out,” she said. “I was used to being treated abusively and I didn’t know any differently.” While on the streets, she became further victimized by men who preyed on her vulnerability, creating a series of events that landed with her being incarcerated, which is where Selah Freedom came to her aid — offering her a place in a safe home and the opportunity for a second chance of life. “This was the first place I felt like a human being. The program looks and feels like a home. Selah helped me identify the root of my trauma and eliminate any shame associated with it,” said Julie, explaining that she had been in and out of 15 rehabs, hospitals and residential homes before finding Selah Freedom. “The groups and activities helped me create new brain pathways. I grew up too fast and never really had the chance to get to know me.” Today, with the help of Selah Freedom volunteers and mentors she calls her “angels,” Julie is currently working and going to school. Her future is brighter than ever, and she is grateful for all of those who have helped her find safety and solace. One of those “angels,” Judy Urso of Arlington Heights, said she enjoys being on the “front lines” of making a difference in women’s lives. “I’ve been a mentor to the women just by offering hope, and I’ve learned so much from them,” she added. Amy Ellis of Wilmette has also personally mentored Julie and watched her transformation. “I love watching the girls overcome their past and bloom into strong, caring women under Selah’s counseling and support,” she said. “We exercise, play games or just talk about life. Since I have a family of all boys, it’s my weekly girl time, and I truly care about the girls that have entered the Chicago house.”

Mochrie and Brad Sherwood bring their “Scared “We both have a very similar reference base of what Scriptless” tour to the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan makes us laugh,” he added. “We spend a lot of time on Sept. 13. Everything is improvised and created and in Rogers Park until he was 10 and moved with his family to Santa Fe, New Mexico. But he fondly on the fly. “We hand the power of the show to the audience,” remembers snow days, grabbing onto car bumpers and Sherwood said in a recent telephone interview. “Our “skitching” on icy streets (“I’ve never known anyone show is completely based on their suggestions. If you’re hanging as a show-within-a-show in the tradition of The Larry out with your friends and trying to make them laugh, Sanders Show. Six months later they were both in the you’re doing improv.“ BY SHERRY THOMAS

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

So when Sherwood was first exposed to an actual improv group—the Sam Glick Players, who performed at his college cafeteria—he was “blown away,” he said. “It was like a comedy show and a magic show at the same time. You were seeing the moment of creation; as it came out of the performer’s mouth, they were hearing it for the first time, too. I was hooked.” He took classes with The Second City’s Los Angeles company and joined the touring company. He understudied for future Whose Line Is it Anyway? colleague Ryan Stiles in the main stage show. It was Stiles who encouraged him to audition for Line producers who were scouting for talent in the early ‘90s. Sherwood performed standup comedy a couple of times in college, but “it was not my cup of tea,” he said. “That to me is more stress-inducing than doing improv, which is funny because most standups would say doing improv is the most stress-inducing. Some comedians like the control of having a framework to work within. I can’t stand that because if that’s not working you need plan b, plan c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k to go whichever direction the audience wants you to go until you locate their funny bone.” He is a staunch proponent of improv’s rule-ofthumb, “yes, and…” by which improvisers build on their partner’s premise and carry it further. “I wish I could implement that more in my actual life,” Sherwood joked. “I would be less neurotic. As a creative tool, the minute you say no, you’re blocking the flow of thought. If I say, ‘Oh no, the monkeys are loose in the zoo and we’ve got to get there and all we have is a hot air balloon; should we go?’ and if Colin says, ‘No, I broke my foot; I just want to watch television,’ then the show is over.”

Brad Sherwood

The sort of improv Sherwood and Mochrie perform is not the traditional people-places-thing variety. Those standard prompts tend to elicit the same responses from audiences. Instead, they are more apt to ask audiences for a letter of the alphabet and a noun that starts with that letter. Though Sherwood and Mochrie have performed their show hundreds of times, it never gets old for them, he said. “You can’t rest on your laurels. We have to walk out there every time with our wits clean and sharp and ready to go. We don’t know what is going to happen. We want the audience’s unfiltered, spur of the moment suggestions. We know we can handle it, but we have no idea what the actual content for that evening is going to be. It’s like an MMA fight. You are in danger every single time so you have to treat (the process) with respect.”

Eye-‘catching’ Loyola Academy receivers, backup quarterback help Ramblers collect road win BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Loyola Academy senior football players Matthew Schiltz, Rory Boos and Artie Collins all hail from Glenview. But each felt right at home in Northfield last weekend. The trio of Ramblers put up big numbers in LA’s 40-3 rout of host New Trier on August 31. “Matt, Rory and I were clicking tonight,” Collins said. Were. They. Ever. Schiltz — ostensibly LA’s backup quarterback to injured senior Jack Fallon, though Ramblers coach John Holecek called Schiltz “our 1A” — completed 13 of 17 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns, two each to similarly built (6-foot-ish, lanky) wide receivers Boos and Collins. Boos finished with two receptions for 103 yards, and Collins came down with four catches for 98 yards. The prettiest play of the stormy night was Schiltz’s 86-yard TD dart to Boos in the third quarter. It was thrown perfectly. It hit a sprinting Boos in stride. Had the spiral been only slightly tighter, it might have sliced Boos’ hands. “Love his poise. And you can see his accuracy and finesse,” Holecek said of Schiltz, who came in for the right-handed Fallon after Fallon had sustained a right separated shoulder in the first half of LA’s Week 1 win in Rockford, Michigan, on August 24. “Those two [Schiltz and Fallon], it’s a good combo. No egos. They competed hard for the starting job in the preseason.” Last spring Collins chose to focus solely on football rather than split his attention between football and baseball. It paid off. He got faster and stronger. Faster, as in a 4.5 clocking in the 40-yard dash. Collins’ two TD snares last weekend more than doubled his career varsity total to three. His first one came in a win against Fenwick last fall. The pair vs. the Trevians covered 14 and 15 yards — both coming in the second quarter, when the visitors opened up a 20-3 advantage with 2:21 left in the half. On his first TD he resembled a leaping shortstop robbing a batter of an extra-base hit, collaring a fast, high pass at the back of an end zone. Collins fell one yard short, early in the fourth quarter, of getting a third tally. He made three shifty moves, juking this way and darting that way, near the end of his 42-yard catch. Ramblers junior running back Tyler Flores (nine rushes, 29 yards) then ran it in from the 1-yard line to up the lead to 32-3. Players and everybody else at the packed game — a rematch of LA’s 35-32 victory in a Class 8A playoff opener last October — had to run for cover late in the first quarter. Lightning halted play at 8:34 p.m., with New Trier (1-1) enjoying a sustained drive. A heavy downpour, mixed in with high winds, followed.

Play resumed at 9:47 p.m. NT had a first-and-10 at the Ramblers’ 11 but had to settle for a 33-yard field goal from senior Graham Dable in the first minute of the second quarter. LA’s defense had notched back-to-back tackles for loss on second and third down. LA senior linebacker Armoni Dixon sacked Trevians senior quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt three yards behind the line of scrimmage on third down. “The delay certainly didn’t help us,” NT coach Brian Doll said after his club (minus its top running backs for most of the game) gained only 138 total yards, 43 on the ground. “We had momentum. But Loyola has a very good defensive line. Its receivers are excellent. “That Boos,” he added, “can change games.”

Loyola Academy senior defensive back Jack Burke capped the scoring with a 10-yard return of a fumble in the fourth quarter. The game ended at 11:38 p.m. “We didn’t slow down at any point in the game,” Collins said after reigning Class 8A state runnerup LA improved to 2-0 and won its 10th straight regular season game dating back to Week 2 of the 2107 season. “Last week [in LA’s 27-7 win in Michigan] we let up in the second half, didn’t finish strongly. We had strong motivation this week with a rivalry game like this. Great atmosphere, great crowd.” Notable: Loyola Academy outgained host New Trier 412-138 in total yardage in its 40-3 victory in Northfield August 31. The Trevians’ feature

running back, senior Brian Sitzer, suffered an ankle injury early and finished with four yards on three carries. Senior running back Jonathan Taylor paced NT with 24 rushing yards on seven carries. … New Trier senior wide receiver Carson Kosanovich caught three of senior quarterback Carson Ochsenhirt’s seven completions and finished with 66 receiving yards, including a 50-yard catch in the first quarter. …. LA Ramblers senior defensive back Jake Gonzalez recorded a sack, and one of his secondary teammates, senior Michael Byrne, came down with an interception in the fourth quarter. … NT senior linebacker/offensive lineman Robert Wright blocked an extra-point try in the second quarter. … LA Ramblers junior running back Trevor Cabanban needed only eight carries to rush for a game-high 79 yards. Driven Lake Forest High School’s field hockey team poised for another lengthy postseason trip behind center-back Considine BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Sarah Considine drives her MINI Cooper, with the top down, to a Lake Forest High School field hockey team dinner. The senior center-back exits the vehicle and enters the restaurant. She eats. She laughs. She speaks and listens. She laughs some more. It’s time to return to the parking lot. It had rained, briefly. And heavily. The MINI Cooper’s top is still down. Considine and a few of her teammates near the car. None of the Scouts would have been surprised had a lifeguard been twirling a whistle in an adjacent parking slot. Hello, MINI pool. Considine won’t need waders to drive home, but she might need a pair of flippers. “It … had … poured,” Lake Forest senior forward Madden Plante recalls. “The interior of her car, everything, was soaked. I was shocked it had rained. I didn’t remember hearing it rain; I don’t think any of us did. Sarah, after looking at the inside of her car, laughed. That was her first reaction — laughter. Then she couldn’t stop laughing. “A little ‘Sarah moment,’ ” Plante adds. “That’s what that was. Such a ‘Sarah moment.’ ” Considine managed to drive the car to her home in Lake Bluff. Her parents, Kevin and Jami, did not ground their daughter for five years. Did not ground her at all. “My parents are cool, for sure,” Considine says. “I dried the car out that night. Used fans.” Fans of LFHS field hockey — field hockey in Illinois, really — know all about the 5-foot-6 Considine, a Columbia University recruit and Windy City Field Hockey club player since eighth grade. An all-stater for the state champion Scouts a year ago and one of only two LFHS sophomores (Plante, too) on the state championship squad in 2016, Considine possesses a calm presence in games, even when the action reaches a chaotic level. Her teammates feed off that placidity, welcoming it and counting on it. Her strength and fitness level? Matchless. Considine usually works out three times a week at Performance Factory Training in Highwood under the guidance of her trainer, Zeus Maldonado, who develops physiques as well as he tones work ethics. Another one of Considine’s strengths is her voice. A center-back without vocal assertiveness is a car without a steering wheel. “I had a difficult time using my voice, finding my voice, as a sophomore,” Considine admits. “That was hard for me, telling seniors what to do, where to go, being a leader at that age. That was scary. But I’m comfortable communicating with my teammates now, directing them, encouraging them, and a lot of that has to do with Coach Cat [Catanzaro], one of the best coaches I’ve ever had, truly gifted at what she does. She and [varsity assistant coach Katie Tilton] helped me find my voice as a leader and vastly improved my game. “Coach Cat, without a doubt, is one of the most important people in my life, and I’m incredibly

grateful for her.” Another Cat, for whom Considine is grateful? Former teammate Cat Nicholson, a 2018 LFHS graduate and freshman field hockey player at the University of Iowa. “Huge mentor,” Considine, also a varsity lacrosse player (middie/attack), says. “I’ve always looked up to her as a player, as a leader, as a person. She worked incredibly hard in high school. I modeled my work ethic after hers. She’s into nutrition, knowing what fuels the body the best, and she always makes sure she gets enough sleep.” Two of Considine’s cousins, Woodlands Academy graduates Colleen and Margaret Andersen, opened her eyes to the sport of field hockey. Considine was a second-grader at the time. After watching her first official field hockey game at WA in Lake Forest, Considine blurted a request to her father. “I went up to him and said, ‘I want to try that, Dad.’ ” Dad Considine knew a thing or two about ice hockey, so exchanging passes with his field-hockey-stick-wielding daughter on the Considine property wasn’t a stretch for him. It didn’t take Sarah long to execute “cool tricks” with a ball and her first stick, borrowed from Margaret.

Experiences in travel field hockey with Windy City, beginning in eighth grade, added dimensions to her game. Windy City Owner and Director Katie Beach was a member of the USA National Field Hockey Team from 1994-2004, representing her country at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. The more Considine played, the more she wanted the opportunity to play college field hockey. That led her to Maldonado at Performance Factory Training. “Zeus helped bring me to the next level athletically,” says Considine, who scored a goal, on a penalty shot, in Lake Forest’s 6-0 defeat of visiting Arrowhead (Wisconsin) High School Aug. 25. “Without a doubt, I would not be where I am today without him.” LFHS defeated Homewood-Flossmoor in its season opener Aug. 22, also 6-0. Catanzaro’s crew looks formidable. Again. Considine and her Game Day impact? Constant. “Extremely coachable, extremely hardworking,” Catanzaro says of her captain. “To be an effective center-back, you have to distribute the ball well, be patient. Sarah, a selfless player, does those things for us. What’s also great about her is her easygoing

nature, along with her modesty. “You would never know she’s good at anything if you talked with her.” Last winter Considine and several of her field hockey teammates proved they’re very good at basketball, too. Her intramural squad — Baby Got Backboard — topped a team named Average Joes for the championship. Considine dribbled around as a guard. “Aggressive, fast, a very good shooter,” Plante, who notched a hat trick in each of the Scouts’ first two games, says of Considine’s hoops skills. “She hadn’t played basketball in years, but you never would have known that had you seen her play.” Considine, all dry now (to match her car’s condition), reigns — in two sports. Notable: Junior forward Julia Hender and senior midfielder Johanna Sidles each tallied a goal in Lake Forest High School’s 6-0 defeat of visiting Arrowhead High School Aug. 25. The Scouts struck for four goals in a 4:30 span in the second half. Sidles also had a team-high six takeaways in the victory. Scouts Heidi Richardson and Elsa Goldsberry shared time in goal...LFHS was 6-0-1 through September 7. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Boys & Girls Club of Lake County CEO Cesilie Price has been a “second mother” to a girl for nearly a decade. Price receives a “Happy Mother’s Day!” text message from the girl every May. Price had lunch with the girl one day. The girl wasn’t happy. “Things weren’t going well for her at school,” Price, a Lake Forest resident since 1992, recalls. “She was hanging out with a crowd that made fun of successful students at the school. She no longer seemed motivated.” The girl talked. Price listened. Price talked. The girl listened. “She admitted to me, ‘I didn’t realize how much the crowd was bringing me down,’ ” Price says. Six months later the girl called Price and asked, “What are you doing at 9 a.m. Thursday?” Price was free. “I want you to hear my name,” the girl continued. Price attended a 9 a.m. assembly at the girl’s school. Names were announced on that Thursday. Honor roll names. One belonged to a girl who had found an entirely different crowd of friends and become a successful student. Turnaround stories like that abound at Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, which serves more than 1,000 youth (ages 6-18) annually through after-school and summer programming at three sites in Waukegan. Its mission: “To inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Price has been an integral leader at the club since its inception, beginning with the start of her nine-year tenure as a board member in 2000. She celebrated her 10th year as CEO in late May. “Problems involving youth are not all in Chicago; there are others right here in our back yard, and many don’t realize that,” says Price, who ordered iced tea, a fruit cup and the “zippy and zingy” Shakshuka at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest. “We need to look north more often, not always south. People in our North Shore communities, through their valuable time and generous donations, can make a positive, significant impact on the lives of our young neighbors. “Ten minutes away — that’s how close they are to us,” she adds. Seventy-six percent of the youths that the club serves come from families with incomes less than $35,000. Unlike other local youth organizations, Boys & Girls Club of Lake County focuses on the total person. It does this with a three-pronged approach, providing programs targeting academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. “It’s important to us that each young person in our club has a plan for the future after high school,” Price says. “We’re showing them that there’s a big, positive world out there for them, along with opportunities to feel empowered. Academic success, yes, will help them achieve their life goals. But they have social and emotional needs, too. We work with them by addressing those and listening

to them. “Our ‘SMART Girls’ [component of Healthy Lifestyles] focuses on health and fitness and selfesteem enhancement. Our ‘Passport to Manhood’ promotes positive behavior and responsibility. Wearing clean clothes, maintaining good hygiene — these help eliminate barriers to friendships and getting teased by classmates.” Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, for many of the club’s boys and girls, doubles as a warm home. Or a haven. “Many of the kids,” Price says, “consider the club a part of their family. I’ve heard them talk, heard them express how important the relationships they’ve made with us are. They feel comfortable around our staff members. They bond with them. Our staff members? They have high expectations for the kids they help. I think that’s wonderful.” Price attended Springfield High School, home of the Senators, and returns to Springfield regularly to fulfill her duties as an Illinois State Board of Education member. She was an SHS cheerleader and active in theater (singing and dancing) and student government. Education fueled her. Price graduated with a business degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and earned her MBA at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her father, always-happyalways-niceto-everyone Keith, an independent insurance agent for 50 years, died in June at the age of 94. Her sharp mother, Jean, 96, resides in an assisted living home in Lake County, loves to learn and can tell you why the best times to make decisions each day are between 10-11 a.m. and right before dinner. Jean was a music major in college before becoming an attorney. “My biggest role model,” says

We’re showing them that there’s a big, positive world out there for them, along with opportunities to feel empowered.

Price, the mother of two daughters (Laura and Lindsey) with husband Bob (a “fabulous guy”) and the grandmother of four grandsons. “My mom always found a way to get something done. She was a visionary, being one of the first four women to take the bar exam in Illinois. I played with cars and trucks and building blocks, in addition to dolls, when I was young. “My mom encouraged me to expand my mind at a young age.” Price has a funny story to tell. It involves her parents — residents, together, at the assisted living home for a spell — and a pair of staffers at the home. “The staffers had a major argument over who would get to assist my parents one day,” Price recalls. “They liked my parents because they were nice, so nice, never grouchy. My dad was big on saying ‘Thank you’ to anybody who did anything for him. My mom is the same way.” Price enjoys gardening and walking in her free time. But nothing thrills her more than spending time with her grandchildren does. Grandma and grandson Nicholas from Texas have caught lightning bugs in jars and released them. Grandma and Nicholas have read books together. “He sometimes reads to me and shares his thoughts about what he had just read,” Price says. “I look forward to those moments. I love those moments. Kids … they’re like little sponges. “Kids,” adds the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County CEO,” inspire me every day.”
