NEWS THE CARETAKERS Cont. from PG 1 The McLennans named their grand estate Stornoway, after a small town on the western coast of Scotland, and accoutered it with all the elegant details that might be found in Europe — from rich wood paneling in the library to carved mantelpieces, crown moldings and a curved staircase. It had been renovated a few times by the time the Burt family purchased it from Bill Wrigley Jr. in 2011, and the original five-acre plat had been reduced over time, but there will still something rather poignant about the role they had taken in the home’s impressive pedigree. “ Our home stands proudly through the changes it has seen, and as Paul has said often said, we are just a caretaker in this magnificent piece of history,” says Janet, explaining that the family has long had an affinity for historic properties. “I believe that each home is a story, a movie ... a snapshot in time. Our last two homes in Lake Forest have been historically significant properties, but we loved this house on Lake Road because of its iconic architect, the private beach, pool, family space and private pier. Our basement has a theater and a salt water fish tank, and the view is amazing every day of the year.” Stepping into the home on a recent weekday was like stepping back into time. While some modifications have been made, the rich wood paneling and mantelpieces are fully intact, lending an air of a European manor. From the graceful foyer, the view out over the pool to Lake Michigan is nothing short of spectacular. Imagine Cap d’Antibes in spring, gazing out over the Mediterranean. “I see the most beautiful sunrises every day, and the beach sky glowing off the lake at sunset is gorgeous,” says Janet, who cherishes the villa-style terrace and outdoor space so much she strongly encourages daughter Sophia and son Hudson to do their homework outside. Because, after all, this is a family house —12-car underground garage and all. “Regardless of whether this property was built as a summer vacation home for a wealthy man, or if it was built as a landmark by a famous architect and landscape designer, we are still a 21st century family living here with dogs and cats running amok — and homework to be done,” she says. “I want to make happy memories for my children of the great times we had here as a family... running around with cousins on Christmas morning, riding bikes in the house on the first floor, having Nerf gun wars, or finding eggs around the house on Easter. This property is also awesome for hide and go seek.” Janet says she also wanted to pass down some beloved family traditions. When she was growing up, her parents always had a puzzle in the dining room — a group project everyone could participate in. Her version of that is a LEGO village, lovingly constructed over months and situated prominently in the center of the dining room table. “To me, that represents that this is a family home and not as uptight as other homes of its stature,” she explains, adding that the family especially enjoys the private beach and boat pier. “The most giggling was probably when we took our children and their cousins tubing after we docked our boat at our pier. We have had bonfires with fireworks at the beach, and a beach birthday party with buried treasures in the sand. We have tried fishing, and most recently a kayak. We are blessed to have this right in our back yard.” While times have changed since the home was built more than a century ago and the spaces are now enjoyed in different ways, the Burt family believes that part of being a caretaker of the prop-

Janet says she especially enjoys the holiday house walks because she loves sharing the magic of Christmas on a larger scale. “I am lucky to have a huge closet of Christmas decorations, many of which were given to me by my parents and grandparents,” she says. “Last year

’Tis the season to be … at Elawa Farm UNIQUE CENTER IN LAKE FOREST SET TO HOST HARVEST DINNER
Harvest season is about to kick off at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest.
BY LIBBY ELLIOTT THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Football season is in the air. So is harvest season at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest. The latter kicks off in early September—that time of year, after a long, hot summer, when the farm’s organic herb and vegetable gardens are at their ripe, succulent best. It’s also the season for Elawa Farm’s annual Harvest Dinner, a farm-to-table feast served al fresco, next to the property’s picturesque gardens. The dinner’s seasonally inspired meal incorporates organically grown vegetables directly harvested from Elawa Farm. “It’s a peaceful, yet exciting, event, where the community gathers and shares the bounty of the garden,” Elawa Farm Executive Director Joanne Miller said. “And, unlike a typical hotel fundraiser, it’s set against the beautiful backdrop of Elawa Farm.” Elawa’s 2018 Harvest Dinner, set to take place,

rain or shine, on September 8, will feature dishes prepared by The Goat Group, the catering arm of the top-rated West Loop restaurant, Girl & the Goat, owned by celebrity chef Stephanie Izard. “We’re thrilled to have Girl & the Goat catering this year,” said Harvest Dinner Chair Ambler Harrison, who serves on the farm’s volunteer board of directors. “Every course will be covered in fresh vegetables.” The dinner’s menu will include an appetizer featuring Elawa Farm tomatoes; a kohlrabi salad mixed with almonds, blueberries and topped with a gingermaple dressing; chickpea fritters; and roasted cauliflower. Featuring a pre-dinner cocktail hour, as well as dessert, coffee and live music in Elawa Farm’s historic hay barn, organizers hope a combination of ticket sales and paddle-raise donations will net between $50,000 and $75,000 to support the nonprofit’s ongoing work. An estimated 200 people are expected to attend the evening event.
“The annual Harvest Dinner raises funds needed to continue maintaining Elawa Farm’s historic buildings and surrounding gardens,” Miller said. Elawa Farm’s 16-acre parcel of land was once home to a gentleman’s farm built in 1917 for A. Watson Armour, a member of the prominent Chicago meatpacking family. Designed by David Adler and Alfred Hopkins, the land and buildings comprising Elawa’s main farm group were purchased by the City of Lake Forest in 1998, to be preserved and maintained through a unique public-private partnership. More than two acres of Elawa Farm’s land is cultivated each year for flowers, herbs and vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, lettuces, carrots, beets and squash. Planted each year by a team of interns, volunteers and staff, the gardens utilize sustainable farming methods like field rotation, cover cropping, beneficial predation and organic composting. Freshly harvested produce, flowers, house-made salads, soups and baked goods are sold at Elawa

Farm’s weekly Garden Market, open Friday and Saturday mornings from mid-May to mid-October. “Elawa Farm’s gardens feed our mission of teaching by example,” Miller said. “By selling our produce, we educate the community about what an organic vegetable actually looks like. We don’t offer perfection because in nature, there’s no perfect tomato or cucumber.” Elawa Farm’s year-round educational and special events include beer tastings, floral arranging, yoga and cooking classes. The farm’s air-conditioned, heated buildings are also available to rent for parties, weddings and corporate events. Harvest Dinner ticket sales have been brisk. Attendees, said Miller, are typically a mix of newcomers and Elawa Farm “true blue” supporters. “We’re anticipating a sellout,” said Miller. GEM DANDY AMERICAN CRAFT EXPOSITION SURE TO SPARKLE FOR A 34TH YEAR BY LIBBY ELLIOTT THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Two or three times a year, for 30 years, jewelry makers Aaron Macsai and Frances Kite exhibited their wares at the same regional art fairs. Macsai specializes in intricate, delicate metalwork, and Kite is a master in cloisonné enamel jewelry. They admired each other’s work and discussed their tricks of the trade. “Most jewelry makers keep their techniques close to the vest,” Macsai said. “Frances and I didn’t feel that way.” The artists maintained a close professional friendship for decades—before exchanging jewelry. Wedding jewelry. The couple got married in 2012. The husband and wife and 29 other fine jewelry artists will be featured at the 34th American Craft Exposition (ACE) September 20-22 in Glencoe. Against the backdrop of Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG), still aglow with the full bloom of summer, 140 of the country’s most celebrated artisans will gather at the prestigious annual Chicago craft expo. In addition to fine handmade jewelry, ACE exhibitors will showcase ceramics, metal, handcrafted clothing and accessories, glass, furniture, fiber decorative, leather, wood, paper, mixed media and basketry at Chicago Botanic Garden. “The setting is absolutely breathtaking,” said Evanston resident Leslie Sevcik, an ACE 2018 volunteer co-chair. “It’s the perfect canvas for our exhibitors’ work.” An estimated 8,000 visitors are expected to attend the three-day ACE show and kick-off Benefit Preview Party on September 20. All proceeds from the 2018 ACE support mental health initiatives at NorthShore University HealthSystem, including the creation of a Psychiatric Urgent Care Program to minimize wait times for patients in need of immediate care, as well as the implementation of a Collaborative Care Model for providing mental health services to families. “Today, more than ever, expanded mental health programs, services and facilities are needed,” said ACE Co-chair Kathy Leighton, of Northbrook “Proceeds from ACE will help make those initiatives a reality.” Macsai, a 20-year ACE veteran, and Kite share a studio in their Morton Grove home, collaborating on new jewelry pieces and exchanging design ideas. They have a close personal connection to ACE: after suffering from debilitating headaches for years, Macsai received successful treatment at the NorthShore University HealthSystem. “This show benefits an institution that’s responsible for a lot of breakthroughs in medical research … breakthroughs that I’ve benefitted from,” Macsai said. “We don’t know of another show in the country like that.” Founded in 1985, the juried show is widely considered the United States’ most selective, prestigious craft expositions. After three decades in Northwestern University’s Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, ACE relocated to Chicago Botanic Garden in 2016. “Once again, attendees will see dozens of their favorite returning artists, as well as many newcomers, all showcasing one-of-a-kind, museumquality pieces,” Sevcik said. Judith Kinghorn, a jewelry maker based in THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Jewelry makers Francis Kite and Aaron Macsai and some of their striking wares.
Minneapolis, exhibits her pieces regularly at topnotch U.S. art fairs, including ones held in San Francisco and Philadelphia. But she particularly enjoys returning to ACE each year. “ACE is one of the most difficult shows for exhibitors to get into,” said Kinghorn, an ACE Show participant since 2004. “The Chicago Botanic Garden is the perfect venue for my current collection, which is botanical.” Working intuitively from memory rather than a sketch or diagram, Kinghorn spends as many
as 40 hours crafting one—just one—of her signature gold-layered chrysanthemums. “I like contrast and texture,” Kinghorn said of her detailed, high-karat gold and silver brooches, necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings. Kinghorn looks forward to reconnecting with her Chicago customer base and introducing herself—and her striking artwork—to new faces. “The ACE show committee members are very helpful at promoting the show,” Kinghorn said. “It’s always a treat when customers seek me out.”
Benefit Preview Party: Thursday, September 20, from 5:30-9 p.m. Ticket price is $200 in advance, $225 at the door, and it includes a three-day pass to the show. ACE runs for the duration of the weekend: Friday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, September 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for a three-day pass, $13 for Chicago Botanic Garden members. americancraftexhibition.org

Major fascino at Mino’s Winnetka hot spot offers a “full service” Italian dining experience

BY PETER MICHAEL THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
If you’ve taken a solemn vow — as I did when I was a knee-high bambino — to eat as much Italian food as your piggy bank can muster, you know that savvy restaurateurs can shoehorn Italian restaurants into some truly funky spaces. Find yourself a semi-operable gas burner, a fridge to keep the Parmesan fresh and a larder stocked with enough olive oil to coat a couple of sauté pans, and you have yourself the foundation of a neighborhood trattoria. Mansions. Pantries. Monasteries. Basements. I thought I’d seen it all, until we pulled up to the corner of Merrill Street and Green Bay Road in Winnetka and laid our eyes on a true first: an Italian restaurant (and a classy one at that), Mino’s, nestled cozily inside the shell of a former auto-body repair shop. I’m told by my friends in the design world that an appropriate term for a rehab of this kind is an “adaptive reuse project” or “restaurant conversion.” But after slipping into our white leather booth and letting the space wash over us — snow-white walls,

dark stained woods, huge nature-inspired murals by local artist Alice Hargrave — the only thing that kept running through my mind was that old cartoon of Cinderella’s fairy godmother turning a giant pumpkin into a glittering carriage. In this case the fairy godmother in question is Audrey Fosse, who spent the last 18 months with her husband, Eric, and business partner, Glen Deutsch, dealing with more drywall and concrete issues than a month’s worth of This Old House reruns. Somehow they’ve preserved the historic charm of the place — concrete floors, exposed industrialchic ductwork and giant sliding doors that welcome in summer’s best breezes — while creating the feel of a modern-day trattoria. Chef John Korycki’s menu aims straight for that cozy, grassy-green fairway in the middle of the Italian table. No slithery organ meats. No fermented fish sauces from the age of Caesar. And no postmodern pasta-wrapped meatballs wading in a Romano-cheese brodo. This is simple down-the-middle fare that benefits from smart riffs on storied staples. It’s rare, for instance, to find a fritto misto platter that’s equally light and KFC-crispy. The secret? Gluten-free
cornstarch and sparkling water, which produces a delicate second skin around the calamari and shrimp that doesn’t parka the seafood in those doughy coatings that so often doom dishes like this. It’s a fun starter, as is the kitchen’s take on burrata, which is drizzled with a verdant gloss of pesto and nested with sweet peppers. The result is so buttery it’s impossible not to smear it on the accompanying toast points and pretend you’re a viscount for the day. If anything the menu shines brightest with the lighter fare, like the house crudo, which changes daily. Our selection included glistening slices of kampachi — think premium amberjack — that’s marinated in an aperol-esque blood orange jus with sweet fennel, a tapenade and thin cuts of serrano peppers. It’s Sicily on a plate. Korycki’s menu will please budget-conscious guests as well as those interested in splurging a bit. One could easily make a nice meal, for instance, out of a glass of wine and bowl of pasta, the best of which is a tagliatelle Bolognese teeming with prosciutto, pancetta and beef. Or perhaps a beer and one of the house’s generously sized thin-crust pizzas, also available for takeout. This flexibility has proven magnetic to a wide

swath of diners. You’re as likely to see Bob Berger, the former owner of Hubbard Woods Motors that once stood on this site for decades, congregating with his old mechanics as romantic partners savoring seafood and sipping cocktails, the latter of which includes the Li-mona, a refreshing mix of vodka, elderflower liquor and homemade limoncello. The entrée list plays things safe, but note the attention to details. A large plank of salmon with a red wine reduction is classic, but the kitchen takes its time with the spinach, blanching away any potentially earthy notes and spritzing them with just the right amount of lemon. Ditto for the house’s sirloin: tender, affordable and cooked perfectly on the house’s wood-burning grill. The accompanying flavors have the balance of an Olympic figure skater. Citrus-drenched arugula meets sweet caramelized onions. It hits all the right notes, as does an absolutely dynamite olive oil cake. Add some excellent service and you have all the proof you need that 985 Green Bay Road remains a darn fine place to park your car. Mino’s is located at 985 Green Bay Road in Winnetka, 847-386-6053, minositalian.com. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Another Berardi sister making a habit … of shooting low Jennifer — the fourth Berardi at HPHS — follows in her sisters’ spike steps, aces golf tests BY BILL MCLEAN
Jennifer Berardi, a sixth-grader at the time, pulls out a five-iron from her golf bag, her instructor standing nearby. Berardi addresses the ball, strikes the ball. It is deemed somewhere between a beautiful shot and a perfect shot by the gallery — or, on this day, Berardi’s instructor. “Funny story … I hated golf at first,” Berardi, now a senior at Highland Park High School, admits. “I hated golf at the time I hit that shot. My teaching pro said to me, right after that shot, ‘If you don’t continue to play golf, I’ll be mad.’ ” Berardi opts to stick with golf. Her teaching pro remains happy. Thrilled about Berardi’s decision, today? Highland Park girls varsity golf coach Cathy Nachman, for one. Fourth-year varsity member Berardi carded a two-over-par and personal-best 73 (eighth-place tie) at the Barrington Invitational at Bonnie Dundee Golf Club in Carpentersville on Aug. 9 and followed that up a day later with a crisp nine-hole round of 37 in a dual with Libertyville High School at Willow Glen GC in North Chicago. HPHS (23-over-par) finished in a tie for first place with Naperville North at the invite and defeated LHS 157-171. “Tenacious,” Nachman says of the 5-foot-8 Berardi, also a varsity basketball player. “But she’s quiet, goes about her business on the golf course.” In 2015 Jennifer Berardi became the fourth Berardi sister — as a freshman — to have teed it up for a Nachman squad, following Jacki (24 years old), Tina (23) and Nicole (19). This fall marks the 11th consecutive varsity season in which at least one Berardi clubbed shots for the Giants’ girls varsity. Tina (HPHS, Class of 2013), a first-year volunteer varsity assistant under Nachman, helped HP’s 2011 team place a program-best third at the Class 2A state tournament. “Ever since Jennifer was little, she’s had an extremely beautiful swing,” says Tina Berardi, who played Division III golf at Denison (Ohio) University after earning Most Improved Player honors, twice, in high school. “That always seemed unfair to me and my other sisters, her beautiful swing. We’d ask Jennifer, ‘How did you get that really nice swing?’ “She gained a lot of confidence this summer at the Badger golf camp [at the University of Wisconsin],” Tina adds. “Jennifer learned new drills, putting- and chipping-related, and different ways to practice on the range up there. Her practice sessions became more structured, more focused, because of what she experienced at the camp.” Jennifer Berardi shot an 87 at a Class 2A regional in Palatine last fall, good enough to secure a sectional at-large berth. The Giants’ other sec-

J.B. LINKSTER: Highland Park High School senior Jennifer Berardi, seen her in action last fall, shot a 73 in the Giants’ first invitational of the season on Aug. 9. Her team shared the Barrington Invite championship with Naperville North. PHOTO BY ROB DICKER, ROB DICKER IMAGES, LTD.
tional qualifier, then-junior Julia Shafir, toured the same track in 83 strokes. Berardi and Shafir, the Giants’ lone state qualifier in 2017, have shared team No. 1 status in the young 2018 season. It’s easy to tell the two apart. One wears a serpentine, cumbersome-looking brace on her left knee. It belongs to Berardi, who, as a guard, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury last winter during her junior basketball season; she had suffered a right ACL tear in grade school. “I might try to play basketball with the brace this winter,” Berardi, a quick hoopster with outstanding passing skills, says. “Toughie … she’s a toughie,” Tina says of Jennifer. And becoming, steadily, more assertive at the dinner table. Jennifer’s three older sisters own “big personalities,” Tina claims. Mom (Midge) and Dad ( Jim) Berardi often listen and listen and listen. “For years Jennifer tried,” Tina continues, “to insert herself into our conversations during din-
nertime.” Jim Berardi — receivers coach for new HPHS varsity football coach David Lindquist — wanted all of his daughters to be able to talk golf. At the dinner table. Outside the house. Anywhere, really. The avid, low-handicap golfer and former HPHS head freshman football coach introduced the sport to each of them. Jacki ended up playing Division I golf at the University of Dayton, where Nicole competes as a club golfer. Music has been on Jennifer Berardi’s mind lately. The Highland Park High School theatre department named her a co-head writer of the STUNTS musical, Uncharted, set to begin its run in November. Too bad it isn’t Bye Bye Birdie (Hello Eagle). She also enjoys photography and reading National Geographic. Berardi might major in atmospheric sciences and meteorology in college. Her forecast for her last Giants golf team? Sunny. “I’ve been impressed; we should be a solid team all season,” says Berardi, whose plummeting golf

scores could be attributed to her soaring confidence. “Our freshmen are doing well already, and our sophomores worked hard on their games in the offseason.” Notable: Highland Park High School’s girls varsity team lost 184-190 to visiting Glenbrook South at Glencoe Golf Club on Aug. 16. Giants senior Julia Shafir carded a team-best 45, three shots better than classmate Jennifer Berardi and HP freshman Ally Kovitz. Senior Caroline Cunniff ’s 49 also counted for the host school. … Berardi (73) and Shafir (74) paced the Giants’ championship effort at the Barrington Invite at Bonnie Dundee GC in Carpentersville earlier this month. Laura Belloff ranked third among Giants with a round of 79, followed by Giants sophomore Emilia Schwenk (81). … Shafir shot a medalist round of 36 in HP’s 157-171 defeat of host Libertyville HS at Willow Glen GC on Aug. 10. … Shafir tied for 54th place (77-85) at the Class 2A state meet in Forsythe last fall. It’s all going swimmingly Former scientist Grevers continues to discover joys of coaching BY BILL MCLEAN
Carolyn Grevers’ white lab coat still hangs in a closet in her Evanston home. She last wore it, as a scientist, in 2004, maybe in 2005, while conducting research at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago. Her name appears at the bottom of a research article — “Repeated Cocaine Administration Increases Membrane Excitability of Pyramidal Neurons in the Rat Medial Prefrontal Cortex” — published in The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. “We acknowledge,” the acknowledgements line begins, “Kerstin Ford and Carolyn Grevers for excellent technical assistance.” Grevers, 39, sits poolside in Lake Forest High School’s natatorium on an August morning, minutes removed from conducting a preseason

practice for her 2018 Scouts varsity girls swimming squad. This is her laboratory today, her workplace, swimmers churning lap after lap, swimmers experimenting with new techniques. The ex-scientist has been an excellent swimming coach since former LFHS varsity boys and girls swimming coach Lea Maurer persuaded her to ditch the lab coat, grab the stopwatch and steer LFHS JV boys and girls swimmers to faster times in 2005. Grevers — daughter of swimming coach Anja Grevers and sister of six-time Olympic swimming medalist Matt Grevers, 33, and University of Missouri associate head swimming coach Andy Grevers — was named LFHS head girls varsity swimming coach and director of Scout Aquatics later that year. Tough double. Time-consuming double. Grevers’ Scouts girls teams finished in the top 10 at state four times between 2011-15, including the runner-up crew in ’15. “When I swam competitively, in age group meets, in high school, I did not love it,” admits Grevers, who raced for swimming teams at Warren Township High School in Gurnee for three seasons before transferring to LFHS for her senior season, in 1996. “Hard … swimming was hard, every day, hours and hours of training, doing all I could to motivate myself and be ready for meets.” Honesty. It’s one of Grevers’ appealing traits. She’s honest with her family and with her swimmers and with her coaches. With everybody in her life. Straight shooters are winners. You sense, if she could reboot her competitive swimming career, she’d work hard in the water and in the weight

“ ‘Flash’ … I still call Carolyn ‘Flash’, because she was such a fast swimmer when I coached her,” says LFHS boys varsity swimming coach and LFHS girls varsity assistant coach Cindy Dell, who coached Grevers when Grevers was a Lake Forest Swim Club member. “She’s even ‘Flash’ on my phone, in my contacts. Such a hard worker as a youth swimmer, Carolyn. Her work ethic was unmatched. She had it all — the natural talent and the desire and the willingness to put in the work no matter how hard it got. Never liked the spotlight, and that made Carolyn an unsung hero in my mind. Humble, incredibly humble, and smart, super smart. She was a scientist. As a coach she’s been recognized with awards nationally and in Illinois. But you’ll never hear her talk about those honors, because she’s never been about accolades. “Carolyn,” Dell adds, “is passionate about coaching, passionate about swimming. You know what, though? She’s probably most passionate about helping her swimmers develop their lives outside of swimming. Carolyn has always been highly interested in a swimmer’s next phase in life.” Scouts junior Kendra Joachim, a butterflyer and a distance freestyler, has shared her interest in science with Grevers, who has shared her experiences at Rosalind Franklin University with Joachim. “You can talk to her about anything,” Joachim says. “If you’re struggling, with anything, she’s there for you, ready to listen. She’s good at reminding us to do our best and to be strong for our teammates. Carolyn keeps us positive.” Scouts senior breaststroker/individual medley racer Katherine Slover sought Grevers’ counsel on deck immediately after being disqualified in an event at a sectional meet last fall. Grevers settled a distraught Slover down and told her to swim off her frustration in cool-down laps. “She also told me it wouldn’t do any good to think about it or to dwell on it,” Slover recalls. Scouts sophomore flyer and sprinter Kathryn Meier dealt with an injury for a portion of her freshman season. First lady of Illinois second to none in child advocacy BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me to
A female freshman at Yale University meets a cute guy outside of her dorm. It’s the first week of school. They talk. “Where are you from?” the guy asks the girl. “New York,” she answers. The girl asks the guy the same question and then hears, “I’m from Iowa. Do you know where that is?” The confident New Yorker blurts, “Of course I do — it’s right next to Pennsylvania.” The instructive Iowan reaches for a stick and outlines a crude map of the United States in a nearby patch of dirt. He points out that his home state is well west of Pennsylvania. Diana Rauner, storyteller of the true story, laughs. The first lady of Illinois loves the story and had just told it to her audience of one at a table near a window at Café Buongiorno in Winnetka, the lifelong Democrat’s hometown when she and her Republican husband, Gov. Bruce Rauner, aren’t residing in the Illinois Executive Mansion in Springfield. The Yale female in the story, set in the late 1970s? None other than Diana Rauner when she was Diana Mendley, future college national fencing champion, future recipient of an MBA (Stanford University), future earner of a Ph.D. (development psychology, University of Chicago). “I grew up in New York, but I was really a provincial girl,” Rauner — still laughing, still in selfdeprecating mode — recalls, the arrival of her arugula omelette with Asiago cheese (to go with her hot tea) minutes away. “When I left for college I’d barely been west of the Hudson River.” The Land of Lincoln isn’t the only state on Diana Rauner’s mind these days; the state of children’s early learning in America — particularly those born into poverty — is, too. Rauner, 57, has been president of Chicago-based Ounce of Prevention Fund for eight years and typically works 60 hours per week for the public-private partnership that inspires minds and changes lives. The fund’s mission: Give children in poverty the best chance for success in school and in life by advocating for, and providing, the highest quality care and education from birth to age five. “The most rapid period of brain development is between those ages,” Rauner says. “Want a fun fact? A baby’s brain forms a million synapses per second. A million … per second. Think about that. Those early childhood experiences are crucial. Not too long ago our organization set a goal, a big one, one that might seem daunting, but we’re going for it.. By 2023, we want a quarter of the children in the U.S. who were born into poverty [ages five and younger] to have access to high-quality care and education. That’s a big number — 1.3 million children. “It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me,” the mother of six and the grandmother of one adds, “to work alongside talented, passionate colleagues on an issue of such great importance to our nation.” Want to learn more fun stuff about Diana Rauner? o f Chicago in Winnetka. She does not eat as much ice cream (a pint a day) as her madabout-chocolate-chipf l a v o r husband does. On her application to Stanford, she wrote, “I want to run a nonprofit s o m e d a y. ” During her high school years she played doubles on Westchester County public tennis courts with her father, Mark, and other men on weekends. “My dad [who turns 90 in October] and my mom, Laura [86], are role models for life,” Rauner says. “They inspired me, when I was in my 20s, to get out there and start volunteering. They still volunteer. They just got back from a trip to Niagara Falls. My parents, married for 64 years, are curious

about things, and they still get excited about learning. Isn’t that great?” A life trustee of both Kohl Children’s Museum in Glenview and National Louis University, Rauner, a Winnetkan since 1996, has been first lady of Illinois since 2015. This past spring Gov. Rauner won the Republican primary ahead of the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial election on Nov. 6. “Every time I get my head spun around,” Diana says, “Bruce says to me, ‘Imagine how lucky we are: we get to spend 99 percent of our time worrying about other people’s problems. He has this tremendous sense of responsibility, running to problems, not away from them. He’s always told our kids, ‘You need to make this world a better place.’ He loves people, and he’s curious about people. He’s a problem-solver, smart, hardworking, decisive, a visionary. “His vision for our state, from the get-go,” she adds, “has been to improve its education.” Bruce Rauner married a quick learner. Diana Mendley had never worn a fencing mask or held a foil or an epee or a sabre when the Yale women’s fencing coach spotted her on campus and persuaded the freshman from New York to give the competitive discipline a try. The coach taught Diana fencing footwork first. Her tennis footwork, no doubt, came in handy. Successful fencers, she would observe, are coolheaded and aggressive at the same time. On point, on point. Diana, the athlete, was both. She helped Yale’s Bulldogs capture a national fencing championship in her junior season and became a team captain and AllAmerican in her senior season. Ask Diana Rauner about her parents’ footwork — in an entirely different arena — and then watch her melt. “Friends of mine told me they saw my mom and dad dancing, swing dancing, on inauguration night,” a beaming Rauner recalls. “My friends thought it was the greatest thing, the sweetest thing.”

WHY DO I LIKE SELLING REAL ESTATE IN LAKE FOREST AND LAKE BLUFF? I’ve had the opportunity to live in Lake Forest/Lake Bluff since 1948 when my father was stationed at Fort Sheridan. I entered the local real estate business in 1972 after 12 years as a mortgage lender. That experience enabled me to serve my clients well; I’ve been involved in over 1000 transactions over the years. It has been a privilege to live in two great communities with my wife, Ann, and daughter, Julie. I’ve lived overseas and in numerous places in the US, and this is the place I chose - near the lake, wonderful people, and great educational opportunities. Thank you Lake Forest and Lake Bluff!
