KINDNESS COUNTS Donated classroom furniture heartens North Shore school and city schools
BY KARINA KAVANAGH THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Is the Highwood restaurant 210 Live—located at the corner of Green Bay and Half Day roads— known more for its eclectic comfort fare or for its frequent live music performances? Too close to call. Especially this time of year. Musical acts, beginning this weekend and through early September, will pack the hotspot, which also celebrates the addition of awardwinning chef Peter McCarthy. Chef McCarthy has streamlined the menu, sure to be hit with music lovers with its tasty barbecue offerings. Featured events for the month include a benefit concert, the Nashwood Festival and a Fall for Music Fest. On August 19, 210 Live will host a benefit for musician J.B. Ritchie, who has been a part of this music community for more than four decades. Many musicians will be donating their time and creating some healing relief for Ritchie in his time of need. Donations will be gratefully accepted. The Nashwood Festival, set for August 24-26 (pre-party on August 23), will transform Highwood into a North Shore Music City, embracing

NEWS KINDNESS COUNTS Cont. from PG 1 nonprofit eAngel Community and the Archdiocese of Chicago Schools to distribute Crow Island’s high-quality, used classroom furniture to inner-city Chicago schools. On June 12, eAngel Community Director and Crow Island parent Chris Eilers, along with the chief operating officer of the Office of Catholic Schools, Tim McGrath, coordinated the large-scale moving operation, loading 20 classrooms worth of furniture into six trucks bound for a staging area on Chicago’s South Side. There, principals from the archdiocese’s network of 100 schools welcomed the trucks and worked together to allocate the pieces to area classrooms in urgent need of an upgrade. “This is a wonderful example of how eAngel builds a community of sharing, which began with the VS America gift and followed with the Crow Island donation,” eAngel Community President Roger Winship said. This fortuitous chain of giving began more than 20 years ago, when the former president and CEO of VS Furniture, Dr. Thomas Mueller, visited Crow Island to meet with the school’s former principal, Dr. Beth Herbert. Mueller, who was conducting research on furniture designed by Crow Island architect Eero Saarinen, took several of Crow Island’s original 1940s-produced desks and chairs back to Germany for display in a furniture museum on the VS America campus. Built in 1940 as a model of progressive education, Crow Island School was one of the first to be designed in North America using the international style of architecture. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1990. “It was an eclectic look,” Crow Island Principal Julie Pfeffer said, referring to Crow Island’s array of unique classroom components (before the VS America donation), with updated pieces added through the years. When VS America’s new CEO, Claudius Reckford, attended Crow Island’s 75th Anniversary in 2016, he offered to give the school updated furniture that would honor its architectural heritage and also be “future ready.” “The new furniture is nicely modernized and appropriate for today’s learners,” Pfeffer said. “It’s all on wheels so it can be easily moved, plus we have whiteboards and tables of varying levels so kids can work either standing or sitting.” Summertime offered the perfect opportunity to make the wholesale change. “That was really the beauty of this donation,” Winship said. “We couldn’t move the old furniture out until the new furniture arrived. The summer was an ideal time to make it happen.” Based in Winnetka with an all-volunteer staff, eAngel Community uses its website to connect Chicago-area nonprofits with individuals and institutions looking to make noncash donations. Through its online clearinghouse, eAngelCommunity.org, the networking site seamlessly matches vetted, pre-approved nonprofits with high quality, in-kind donations, ranging from kitchen equipment 210 LIVE Cont. from PG 1 the spirit of Tennessee’s capital for a festival of music and food. Above and beyond Athletics just one facet of Highland Park-based sports foundation BY JULIE KEMP PICK THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Alec Brown, the new executive director of Beyond Sports Foundation in Highland Park, has seen firsthand how sports can transform lives. Originally from the Detroit area, Brown has lived in Chicago for 11 years. He began as a high school English and history teacher in the city and moved on to administrative positions. His last post was athletic director/assistant principal at Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy on the southwest side. “It’s a relatively new school, but when I started there we had no athletic programs and no gym,” Brown recalled. “I worked there for about six years, and we got to a point where we offered 11 sports to about 300 students in the city.” Brown said forming partnerships was instrumental, because it didn’t have a gym or any facilities. “I really saw how sports can transform lives, and that’s why the transition to Beyond Sports is the perfect transition for me,” Brown said. “It’s an amazing organization to be a part of.” But like the name implies, Beyond Sports does more than train athletes in underserved communities to be eligible for college scholarships. “We want to take a holistic approach and really focus on the entire life of each student; that involves making them better people and not just better students and athletes,” Brown said. Brown explained that Beyond Sports is planning to provide workshops on a weekly basis, with instructors teaching social media responsibility, financial literacy or time management. Representatives from other organizations and nonprofits will

Fleming was a member of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in 2014 and participates in professional development and fundraising events. Beyond Sports is currently expanding its basketball and baseball programs. Brown said he’d like to diversify the sports at Beyond Sports, and he’d also like to increase the female participation. Currently there are fewer than 10 female students in the program. Beyond Sports works closely with coaches, teachers, counselors and even alumni to find good candidates for its programs. Each candidate soon discovers the emphasis Beyond Sports places on academics. Brown brought up a tale of two brothers. Both were interested in a program, but one had been struggling in the classroom. Beyond Sports turned the underachiever down and told him to focus more on the books. “Then he completely turned his attitude toward school around and was accepted into the program the following year,” Brown said, adding the athlete Beyond Sports Foundation Director of Athletics recently graduated with a football scholarship. Beyond Sports’ philosophy is to sit down with each family to ensure that it is willing to make this commitment. There’s an interview process that begins in January, and students are usually accepted by March or April. “The earlier we can start working with students, the bigger impact we can have on their lives,” Brown said. Last year Beyond Sports accepted two eighthgraders for the first time, and they will accept students up until their junior year of high school for the organization’s after-school and weekend programs. In addition to Highland Park, Beyond Sports is also developing locations at Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago and Max McCook training facility in McCook. The latter is also an EFT Sports Performance location. “It is so easy for these students to slip through the cracks and never get noticed,” Brown said. “We’re here to encourage them to follow their dreams, go on to bigger and better things and then give back. “Once you become a Beyond Sports athlete,” he • academic development added, “you don’t leave.” • athletic development • social responsibility Beyond Sports Foundation is a grassroots • professional development and mentorship program, having supported more than 60 studentathletes pursuing a college education, and 100 “We’re helping them achieve that goal of earning percent of those student-athletes have graduated a college scholarship, but we’re also trying to shift from high school and matriculated at college. their mindset so that it doesn’t stop there,” Brown Beyond Sports is located at 1350 Old Skokie Road, said. “They need to be thinking about career, all the way through.” #205, Highland Park. Joint effort: The Gallery and Left Bank DOMINIC ZUMPANO AND CECILIA LANYON BRING THEIR COLLABORATIVE ATTITUDE TO A NEW ACQUISITION, UPDATING A BELOVED LAKE FOREST EATERY.
BY KARINA KAVANAGH THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Dominic Zumpano and Cecilia Lanyon are no strangers to collaboration. In fact, their Lake Forest art gallery and restaurant, The Gallery, couldn’t exist without their particular brand of teamwork. Zumpano is a chef, Lanyon an artist. They brought their passions together a little more than a year ago to create a BYOB art gallery that serves gourmet dinners inspired by an exhibit of paintings. Lanyon chooses an artist to showcase, and Zumpano creates a menu based on the themes in the art and conversations with the artist. The exhibits—and the menu—change every six to eight weeks. The current exhibition at The Gallery is a series of paintings by Lake Forest native Anne Marie Boardman. The art is inspired by Boardman’s world travels, particularly her trips to Jamaica, Morocco, Greece and France. Zumpano designed a Caribbean-Latin menu to reflect the paintings’ vibrant colors, with light French and Asian influences. It’s eclectic, but it works in dishes like the crispy pork belly and watermelon salad, with arugula, mint and lime.

Zumpano loves the culinary freedom that comes with a rotating menu. “I’ve been a chef for more than 20 years,” he said. “I’ve done everything from Italian to American, to Mexican and steakhouse. The Gallery lets me bring everything I’ve learned together. I have no limits.” While The Gallery has been quite successful, Zumpano and Lanyon are now proving their versatility in their new partnership with Left Bank, a beloved Lake Forest hot dog stand. As hot dog stands go, Left Bank has an impressive history. It’s been around since 1966, when the Pasquesi family started off with a cart at Lake Forest Beach, selling hot dogs, popcorn and popsicles. Soon after, it opened a brick and mortar location in downtown Lake Forest on Bank Lane. After 50 years of Pasquesi ownership, Randy Earls bought Left Bank in 2015. Earls soon realized that he didn’t have the time that the place deserved, which is when Zumpano and Lanyon entered the picture. They went to work immediately, expanding the menu and giving the storefront a facelift, but Zumpano is clear that he doesn’t want to completely overhaul the restaurant. “For a long time,” Zumpano said, “Left Bank was just hot dogs and Sloppy Joes. It’s covered in memorabilia, [and] kids that grow up in Lake

a great opportunity to be able to interact with customers, one that I don’t usually get,” he said, laughing. The connection between owners and customers has been one of the hallmarks of Left Bank, with staff knowing its regulars and regulars knowing each other. It has always been a place to have conversations and unwind over no-frills food, and the new ownership will simply usher in a new batch of friendships. Perhaps it’s fitting that these particular owners are bringing The Left Bank into a new era. After all, this isn’t Zumpano’s first shot at a hot dog stand. His first job, at age 14? Selling hot dogs. “It’s all coming full circle for me,” he said. “Cecilia and I are so excited to be a part of this Lake Forest tradition.”
Forest have fond memories of this place. We wanted to keep that nostalgia and those feelings. We also wanted to give people some options.” Zumpano has brought new life into the offerings with food that’s still quick and easy but also creative and interesting: sandwiches, salads and immensely popular street tacos—the two biggest sellers are a mahi-mahi taco with avocado and cilantro lime crema, and a Korean beef taco. With all the new dishes, he’s quick to reassure Left Bank regulars that the old recipes haven’t disappeared. They are all still on the menu in their original forms. Even Zumpano doesn’t dare change those things that have stood the test of time. Since The Gallery is fairly upscale, Zumpano is finding that he loves having a more low-key day job. The Left Bank, (847) 234-4770, is located at 659 “Being able to sling hot dogs in the daytime is North Bank Lane, Lake Forest.

Band with Ryan — heady stuff New Trier headband-wearing Ryan makes statements with her volleyball game, too BY BILL MCLEAN
Taite Ryan settles on 35 for the number of headbands she owns. A teammate of the New Trier senior volleyball player had guessed 45, while walking past Ryan with several other teammates, after the end of a tryout session last week in a steamy gym at the school’s Winnetka campus. The bigger number had made Ryan smile. “All of the colors of the rainbow,” Ryan, wearing a pink headband on this day, says, referring to the hues of the bulk of her headwear collection and adding the pieces of fabric hang on hooks in her closet at home. “I also have some patterned headbands. Been wearing a headband ever since I

started playing volleyball. “I wear a white headband, only a white one, when we play matches. On days when we practice, on days when we’re going through tryouts, I like to change it up a little, mix it up. It would be weird, so weird, if I didn’t wear one on a volleyball court.” A Ryan headband happens to decorate the part of her that contains her most valuable volleyball asset — knowledge of the sport. The 6-foot-1 (one inch taller than her height last year) outside hitter and Dartmouth College recruit has a knack for knowing exactly where to direct a kill attempt, has a knack for knowing exactly where to be to bump a dig, has a knack for knowing exactly where to be to disrupt an opponent’s kill attempt. If the high IQ society Mensa International were to accept only smart prep volleyball players from Illinois, Ryan — a third-year varsity Trevian with superb court vision and instincts — would be picked as a charter member and then be asked to head the selection committee in ensuing years. “We could put Taite anywhere on the court, in any position, and watch her succeed there,” New Trier girls volleyball coach Hannah Hsieh, about to begin her 23rd season at the school, says. “Skillful player, solid player, smart. As an attacker she’s

more aggressive, which is good to see. [During tryouts] I’ve also noticed she’s more solid in everything. Indispensible … Taite will be that kind of player for us.” Ryan played an instrumental role on NT’s Class 4A sectional championship squad (33-6) last fall, typically ranking either second or third among teammates in kills. The eight-year Wildcat Juniors club volleyball veteran pounded seven kills in NT’s defeat of Niles West in a sectional semifinal and
then crowded her stats line with a 10-dig, threekill, three-ace, two-block effort in a three-set defeat of Hersey in a sectional final. Ryan, at the time, was more than a year removed from discovering the differences, most of them startling and exciting, between a JV match and a varsity match. “More strategy involved, crazy energy in the gym, the number of fans watching us, cheering for us … so much going on,” Ryan says of the

memorable atmosphere surrounding her varsity debut in 2016. “It’s what I still love about volleyball — the vibe and energy our team gets to experience after every big kill, after every big block. You can feel the mood in the entire gym change, instantly, after something good happens. It’s truly a team sport, because you can’t have a weak link on your team and expect to win.” Ryan chose to give volleyball a try in the fifth grade at Sacred Heart School in Winnetka. Practically everybody was playing it there, she had observed. Maybe it was the thing to do. Taite signed up and battled. Stefanie Ryan later encouraged her daughter to attend a Wildcat Juniors club tryout session. Taite resisted at first. Then relented. The daughter still appreciates the nudge from mom. In June, at AAU Volleyball Nationals in Orlando, Florida, Wildcat Juniors’ 18 Black team placed fifth in the 18 Premier division. The coach deployed Taite Ryan in the front row. Ryan produced. As always. “Taite’s consistency is what makes her valuable in volleyball,” Trevians senior setter and Boston College recruit Payton Hielscher says. “And she’s athletic, and she gets better and better each year. Her serve-receive is better. She’s hitting better, blocking better. You’ll never see her get flustered on the court. Our team’s chemistry on the court is good because Taite is there. “She’s our rock,” Hielscher adds. Who also dribbles the rock. Ryan is a lock to make the varsity girls basketball team for a third season this winter. Ryan played forward and center for a 4A sectional semifinalist in the 2017-18 season. She will have collected a total of six varsity letters on Graduation Day in 2019. “One of the few multisport athletes left,” says Hsieh, whose spikers open their season at Libertyville High School on Aug. 21. “I love that she plays two sports. I love watching her play basketball. To play the sports she plays and to handle the academics at our competitive school as well as she does, that takes balance. Taite has always been good at balancing her commitments.” About her unique first name: Stefanie and her husband, Doug, saw it in a newspaper article before the birth of their daughter and liked it. Taite Ryan organizes birthday parties at an Athletico Center this summer. Does Taite Ryan know another Taite? “No,” she says. Count on her volleyball teammates to say yes to Ryan’s leadership style in 2018. “I’m laid-back, don’t take a lot of things too seriously,” she says. “It takes the edge off my teammates. I find fun in everything. Volleyball … it’s supposed to be fun.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Why? Why? Why? BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The boy who grew up in a Highland Park house filled with books everywhere, on every floor, liked to read the sports section in the newspaper every day. A young Daniel Greene ate cereal and consumed printed stats or game stories or columns, oftentimes simultaneously. Every day. Greene’s mom, Carol, was a high school teacher, his dad, Alan, an attorney. Was either parent concerned that Daniel would fail a Civil War test in history class because he might have spent too much time reading about college football’s annual Civil War (University of Oregon vs. Oregon State University)? No. “My parents’ thinking,” recalls Greene, now 45, was, At least he’s reading something.” Mom and Dad Greene eventually took their son on family field trips to museums. Daniel entered art museums and historical museums and other homes of relics, some of them located outof-state. Suddenly Andre Dawson’s homer total in a Chicago Cubs uniform wasn’t as interesting as the Colonial Williamsburg historic district in Virginia was. “I visited dozens of museums with my parents,” says a grateful Greene, an Evanston resident since 2008. One of Greene’s occupations, today: guest exhibition curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington, D.C. His wife, Lisa Meyerowitz, is editorial director at Art Institute of Chicago. Their children, Evanston Township High School freshman-to-be Solomon, 14, and fifth-grader Bella, 9? Museumgoers. “We’re a museum family,” Daniel Greene, also an adjunct professor of history at Northwestern University, says, having ordered coffee, scrambled eggs and a biscuit at Cupitol Coffee & Eatery in Evanston. Four years ago USHMM named Greene one of nine researchers to examine the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and the persecution and murder of Jews in Europe during the 1930s and ’40s. The extensive project resulted in USHMM’s latest exhibition, Americans and the Holocaust, with Greene often traveling to D.C. two or three times a month to fulfill his duties. The exhibition opened in April to mark the museum’s 25th anniversary (under the banner “Never Stop Asking Why”), and it will be featured there until 2021. Greene will co-lead a mission to USHMM September 12-13. “Our order, from the museum’s leadership, was, ‘Tell a new story,’ ” says Greene, who, during the undertaking, kept teaching at NU but stepped down from an enviable research post he had held at Newberry Library in Chicago. “An important component of the exhibition is to transport visitors back to such a turbulent era. We show people what America looked like in the 1930s and 1940s. People felt threatened, economically, thinking refugees, if the number grew, would take jobs here, too many jobs. Isolationist sentiment was strong. The priority of our government’s leadership wasn’t to rescue

Jews; it was to defeat Nazism and end World War II as soon as possible. “Hollywood,” he adds, “focused on Nazism’s threat to democracy, not on what was happening to millions of Jews in Europe.” A couple of history teachers at Highland Park High School inspired Greene. Debates about all kinds of topics stirred him in the classroom, made

him think, encouraged engagement. Dates? Such and such happened on such and such a date. Boring. Counterproductive. The history teachers Greene liked thought making students memorize dates stifled learning and quashed the thorough examination of significant issues in history. Theater classes at HPHS moved Greene, too. “One of the best things at my high school was its theater department,” says Greene, who also performed on stage as a student at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, before earning his Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago in 2004. “The theater department at Highland Park High School was vibrant, amazing, with outstanding teachers who challenged their students. I’m sure that hasn’t changed. Enjoying history and theater like I did then and still do … it helps having that combination of passions if you’re a history teacher. You sometimes have to be a bit of a performer in a classroom to help students become interested in a subject. And inquisitive. “I love teaching.” Greene has invited Holocaust survivors to speak to his history students at NU. If a survivor had written a book, Greene assigns the book to his students before the survivor’s appearance. It wasn’t unusual for Greene, from 2014 until the completion of the exhibition Americans and the Holocaust, to lead a lively discussion about Americans’ response to the Holocaust in a classroom at NU and tackle the same subject with his USHMM team of researchers two days later in D.C. “For 20 years I’ve been studying the Holocaust,” Greene says. “Getting to know Holocaust survivors has been a privilege. To be able to tell their stories to others — also a privilege. It motivates me. Unfortunately we’re losing survivors; maybe 15 years from now none will be alive.” The late writer/professor/political activist/Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, spoke at the opening of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 25 years ago. The eloquent
man asked many questions in his speech, including, “And for me, a man who grew up in a religion, the Jewish religion, a man who his entire life thought that God was everywhere, how is it that man’s s i l e n c e [throughout the Holocaust] was matched by God’s? “Oh, I don’t believe there are answers,” he continued on that day in April. “There are no answers. And this museum is not an answer; it is a question mark. If there is a response, it is a response in responsibility.” Greene asks questions. It’s what historians do. He asks them in his classrooms, in museums, in a … restaurant in Evanston. “What did Americans know about Nazism?” he asks. “And when did they know about it? And why wasn’t more done to rescue the Jews of Europe? Why didn’t the rescue of Jews become a priority, except for a few outliers who w e n t against t h e grain to help refugees? “ These are difficult questions,” Greene adds. “Difficult questions must be asked.” The curator pauses. “History,” Greene says, “is messy, right?” For more information about the September 12-13 mission trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., including a guided tour of its newest exhibition, Americans and the Holocaust, please visit ushmm.org/online/calendar.
