Remembering John McGovern

Lifeguard chairs have their day in the sun

John McGovern, a North Shore businessman who worked in the highest levels of politics and government, died Friday, July 13, from a suspected heart condition. He was 48. Known affectionately as “Johnny” to close friends and family, McGovern’s memory was honored at a recent funeral service at Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, and he was laid to rest privately. He is survived by his beloved wife of seven years, Wentworth Caldwell McGovern, and their two young boys, Caldwell Armour McGovern (4) and Watson Greeley McGovern (2). He is also survived by his mother, Karen Osborne McGovern of Lake Forest, and his sister, Courtney Osborne McGovern of Chicago. In addition,

NEWS JOHN MCGOVERN Cont. from PG 1 he is survived by his in-laws, long standing Nashville natives, Wentworth and Barry Caldwell, as well as three sisters-in-law: Ashley Caldwell Levi ( Joe), Barry Caldwell, Liza Caldwell Coleman (Greg) and numerous nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his father, John E. McGovern, Jr. (“Jack”). Born in Chicago, he attended Lake Forest Country Day School before boarding at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. In 1991, John graduated with honors from Princeton University with a degree in American History and a Certificate from the American Studies Program. While at Princeton, John was a member of the Ivy Club as well as Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. John would go on to to earn his J.D. from the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and was admitted to the Illinois Bar. John worked at the highest levels of politics and government, serving as a top aide to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives for over seven years. During his tenure, John worked as both an official and campaign press secretary, and assumed a variety of other roles overseeing communications programs, fundraising, and campaign strategy. John also ran a multimillion dollar national political action committee, Keep Our Majority PAC, where he served as executive director, leading integration of the Speaker’s national political strategy with the National Republican Congressional Committee and GOP congressional candidates across the country. He also held leadership roles in a number of key federal campaigns, including serving as Campaign Manager for U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk’s first campaign in Illinois’ 10th District in 2000 as well as Communications Director for U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald’s 1998 race in Illinois. Prior to

And in his basement workroom, Kalousek is slowly crafting a paddleboard inlayed with a detailed map of the Great Lakes. Kalousek, who spends an average of 40-60 hours carving a John Hans custom-made inlay alone, said his boards look just as displayed underfoot as they do hanging on a wall. “When you’re on something that’s hand-built, it’s got a different feeling from something that’s been machine produced,” he said. Despite ambitious plans for a Tan Foot Lifestyle-branded beer, plus live events like beach volleyball tournaments, Kalousek still takes time for sailing and paddle boarding expeditions with his family, making sure he lives up to his company’s official tagline: “Forget work. of the Art Institute of Chicago at the time of his death. In addition, John was a devoted member of the Elawa Farm Foundation Board and was the great-grandson of A. Watson and Elsa Armour, who had originally founded and owned Elawa Farm. John previously served as a longtime member of the Illinois Government Affairs Group, on the Board of the Rush Medical Center Associates and on President’s Leadership Council at the Field Museum. From 2009-2011, John was a Fellow in the Emerging Leaders Program of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. “The Forest Park Project in Lake Forest was privileged to have John be our PR consultant,” says Lake Forest resident Joan DePree. “He was brilliant, funny and always a gentleman. John was also a close personal friend to my family. His loss is a heartbreaker.” A true Chicagoan, McGovern loved the city as evidenced by his support of the arts, culture and community in Chicago as well as his passionate support for Chicago sports teams—especially the Cubs and Blackhawks. John could be found on the third-base line cheering on his team and flagging down the beer man. His son Caldwell attended his first game with his father this past spring. John also loved to be outdoors— hunting and fishing—just as his father had taught him at the family cabin in northern Wisconsin. He was an avid reader, devouring historical biographies; a weekend golfer who enjoyed the tradition of the game and the camaraderie of his playing partners; and a fierce bridge player. But according to family members, his greatest rewards were his roles as a devoted husband to his wife Wentworth and as a father to their sons Caldwell and Watson. Based on the outpouring at his recent memorial service, he is a man who will be missed by many whose legacy will endure for generations.

A cherished tradition LAKE FOREST DAY SALUTES AMERICAN LEGION’S CENTENNIAL AND TWO OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. BY KARINA KAVANAGH

Lake Forest Day is one of those community traditions we tend to take for granted. It happens every year in early August and has come to include two days of parades and parties and celebrations of all that makes our city unique. But did you ever wonder how it all got started? We did some digging into the history, which was covered nearly a decade ago in the Lake Forest Day book by Arcadia Publishing. While American Legion Post 264 is known for hosting the annual event today, the first Lake Forest Day was organized by the Lake Forest Woman’s Club. The inaugural event—which included a hot air balloon contest, a cutest baby contest, a mind-reading dog, and a vaudeville show—funded the Contagious Hospital, which eventually merged into Lake Forest Hospital. The woman’s club ran the event until 1921, when the American Legion took over and has continued a celebration that has changed with the times to reflect national events and cultural shifts. During World War II, Lake Forest Day had more patriotic themes such as “Home Defense,” “Prelude to Victory” or “On to Tokyo.” Now in its 110th year, Lake Forest Day is the largest annual celebration in the city and is attended by thousands. A new pedestrian courtyard behind Market Square’s north side in downtown Lake Forest should make pedestrians stop in their tracks. With a grand opening celebration set to coincide with Lake Forest Day on Aug. 1, Lake Forest’s historic landmark recently received a makeover with help from the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation. The addition to America’s first planned shopping center — designed by renowned architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and unveiled in 1916 — has a European-style look and feel. The courtyard features plantings and brick and stone pavers, along with seating to encourage visitors to linger and relax. The new area will have an entrance next to Forest Bootery, as well as another entrance off Bank Lane near the post office. “It’s a more intimate environment, where you can get away from the hustle and bustle,” said Christiane Fischer, senior asset manager for Mid-America Asset Management, which manages Market Square. “And it’s about bringing it back to its original luster.” The space will also be used as another venue for community events. While Market Square already hosts many events, including holiday events around Halloween and Christmas, and a summer music series, the new courtyard will lend itself to even more offerings. “There are so many opportunities for events we can explore now because of this new space,” Fischer added. The family-friendly grand opening will also include live music, free gelato, a children’s craft table, and plenty more entertainment for people of all ages to enjoy. Festivals a feast for all THE 8TH ANNUAL GARLIC FESTIVAL FOLLOWS THE POPULAR BLOODY MARY FEST, BRINGING THE BEST OF CULINARY TREATS AND ENTERTAINMENT TO HIGHWOOD. BY KARINA KAVANAGH

While fans of tomato juice and over-the-top garnish are getting set for this weekend’s 9th Annual Bloody Mary Fest at Everts Park in Highwood, garlic aficionados are also getting festival fever. The village’s 8th annual Garlic Fest returns on August 15—held in conjunction with Highwood’s Evening Gourmet Market from 4:30-9:30 p.m. Also located in Everts Park (130 Highwood Avenue), this foodie fest will showcase a plethora of dishes with the ever-popular taste (and scent) of garlic, with live music and plenty of familyfriendly activities to entertain all evening long. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to sample the best of the best garlicky pastas, sandwiches, sauces and spreads. For the truly brave or the most avid fans, there will also be out-of-theordinary garlic infused dishes such as candy, pastries and cocktails. After taste-testing as many items as they can handle, patrons can vote for their favorite creations in the Sweet and Savory categories in the People’s Choice Competition. True garlic lovers can also compete to be crowned the next Royal Garlic Representative. Celebrate Highwood will crown a Garlic King, Queen, Prince, and Princess at the Fest. WYO multimedia fashion show a runaway success BY LIBBY ELLIOTT

This summer, Winnetka has emerged as a destination for emerging young musicians, artists and fashion designers. On July 8 — less than a month after the successful Winnetka Music Festival drew large street crowds — the Winnetka Youth Organization (WYO) packed the house for what WYO staff members have called an “outstanding” collaborative, multimedia fashion show designed and produced by Victor Pearlman, a Wilmette resident and rising senior at New Trier High School. A record 80 teens gathered in the WYO’s Teen Drop-In Center, located on the lower level of the Winnetka Community House, to hear live music, interact with artists and see new designs from Pearlman’s original clothing brand, Stay Noided. “So many teens came to this event,” said WYO’s executive director, Christina Gikas. “Being there, you felt the energy. You felt inspired.” Planning for the multimedia event began several months ago, when teens at the WYO began talking about the popular multimedia shows Pearlman regularly stages at venues in downtown Chicago, which regularly draw crowds of more than 300 teens. “A lot of our big programs at the WYO revolve around music and art,” said Gikas. “We kept hearing his name through different groups, so we got in contact.” Pearlman, who often has to rent the downtown

venues he uses for his shows, says he was drawn to WYO’s nonprofit, community roots. “The second I sat down inside WYO’s space, I felt a sense of community,” said Pear lman. “They were incredibly generous and gave me a lot of freedom in terms of what I could do.” Founded in “Organized Chaos” fashion show. 1969, WYO’s vision is to make all teens feel welcome and accepted for who they are and experience the freedom to pursue their interests and talents, in hopes that they lead lives of integrity and service. WYO prides itself on serving teens from diverse social groups by offering relatable programing that allows teens to build new connections. Gikas and her colleagues say they were impressed by Pearlman’s ability to network and connect with

diverse groups of teens. “Victor is so inno vative, ” said Gikas. “He’s able to connect with anyone he meets. He includes every one in his vision.” Pearlman’s clothing collections are influenced by a specific social issue, and they aim to unite members of a communit y, regardless of their identity. Pearlman’s WYO runway show, “Organized Chaos”, focused on female empowerment, drawing inspiration from the current #metoo movement. Female models from local high schools, as well as Pearlman’s own mother, walked the runway in Pearlman’s industrial, high-end street wear, including branded white t-shirts and deconstructed suit jackets embellished with recycled textiles and patches.

To demonstrate how women are often silenced in society, the show’s runway models did more than just wear Pearlman’s designs; they spoke out during the multimedia event. “Our female models were encouraged share the moments of injustice they had experienced in their lives,” said Pearlman. Pearlman also invited local bands, including Kolla, Wrench and Lower Lip Drip to perform original music at the show, while artists worked simultaneously on live art installations. “My goal with all my shows is to curate a collaborative work space,” said Pearlman. Pearlman created his clothing brand, Stay Noided, as a testament to his freshman year of high school, a period of his life when he frequently felt alone, “paranoid” and bullied. “Stay Noided celebrates individualism and promotes fearlessness,” said Pearlman. “There’s a strong anti-bullying message in all my designs. It’s about not letting anyone tell you that you can’t do something.” Now entering his senior year of high school, Pearlman says he plans to stay local for college, and he hopes to attend The School of the Art Institute of Chicago after graduation. “Watching Victor Pearlman work a room is truly remarkable,” said Mary Komlofske, program director at WYO. “He has interpersonal skills beyond his years. Evanston eatery evokes iconic painting

If you can scrounge up three bucks and the courage to order a fish nugget in mixed company, I can introduce you to the tastiest two-bite morsel in town. Technically, the good folks behind Kinship, which sits in the rotunda at the base of 1603 Orrington, refer to their delightful nibble as a “chicken-fried scallop shooter,” a nod to the elemental pleasures of tipping back shot glasses filled with slippery oysters or liquid shrimp cocktails. Fortunately, this “scallop shooter” is vertical and solid, and when it arrives at your table—nestled atop raw fennel and below a swirl of lemon aioli dappled with cumin, cabbage slaw and a salsa fresca—it’s a showstopper. Our bite was positioned in the middle of a black plate flecked with tiny white lines that radiated out from its center in an explosion of concentric circles. This is plating designed to convey a message. “What you’re going to bite into here,” the kitchen seemed to be telling us, “is going to detonate upon impact.” And to my surprise it delivered with a bang. Crunchy yet delicate. Meaty and briny with cold hints of licorice from the fennel. And a creamy acidic punch from the aioli and cabbage. Why rhapsodize, one might wonder, over a tiny

snack? Because that little scallop exemplifies precisely how Kinship hopes to carefully walk the tightrope between approachability and sophistication. First and foremost, owners Carey Cooper and Gail Taggert realize that looks matter. Gone is the carrot-meets-rutabaga color scheme that characterized the space’s former tenant, Lyfe Kitchen. In its place walls are sheathed in deep midnight blues, maroon banquets curl around the room and cozy camel-hued leather line a welcoming bar. Imagine the mise-en-scène from Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” re-imagined for the modern age and you’ll get the sense of what’s to come. Instead of trying to hide the restaurant’s crescent-moon shaped floor plan, Cooper and Taggert have embraced it. There are so many different geometric patterns here—empty picture frames, blocky wire-framed fixtures and gorgeous circular wall sconces that beam halos of light against the wall—you almost expect someone might to slip you a trigonometry test before the wine list comes around. Oh, but it’s dazzling inside. All this soft light shines down and refracts off the round carrera marble tables and the dark gray flooring until the shadows and light swirl and dance through the room like a cup of coffee getting filled with fresh cream.

Kinship’s inaugural menu seeks to find a similar balance between simple American classics (roasted chicken, filet mignon, lobster bisque) and more robust staples from around the globe (spicy Thai curry bowls, Moroccan lamb burgers, lobster cavatelli). There’s little doubt that Vernon Hills-born chef Marco Bahena’s travels—stops in France, Spain, Nantucket and at Everest in downtown Chicago— informed the menu. Some of his presentations are canvass-worthy, especially his tuna tataki. Thick slices of raw tuna topped with bits of watermelon radish and edamame, are fanned around a central well of ginger-lime marinade as if it were an edible flower in bloom. And even something as simple as a mixed green salad with hearth-roasted chicken and tahini-miso dressing is brightened by thick curls of orange and pink carrots that wind through greens like silky ribbons. Tried and true entrees deliver the best value, especially an inexpensive hanger steak fired in the house’s Woodstone oven. The beef gets topped with a horseradish gremolata that swaps out parsley in favor of arugula to highlight the slightly spicy

green’s subtle undercurrent of black pepper. You can’t go wrong with the house’s simple salmon either, which is glazed in a miso-mirin sauce that’s not cloyingly sweet and bolstered by pickled kumquats and crunchy kale flakes. Just make sure you save room for dessert, which aims to ensure eclairs return to their former glory. Kinship’s éclair tasting—you choose three out of five revolving options—is a must, especially if you order my personal favorite: Kinship’s lemon-meringues which is whipped up with an inspired spoonful of tart yogurt. Add an order of apple strudel, which is topped with a neutralizing creme fraiche, and you’ll be sugared up enough to become a North Shore “Nighthawk” in your own right. Sisters’ edge Marsico trio set to go, go, go at JO track meet BY BILL MCLEAN

Jenny Vacala crammed a tent and chairs and a cooler wagon and food and beverages and several pieces of luggage into her vehicle for a three-day, four-hour trip to steamy Indianapolis last month. The Lake Forest resident, somehow, also found room to load her most precious cargo: Isabella Marsico, Olivia Marsico and Lola Marsico. Vacala’s three daughters. Isabella and Olivia (triplets with brother Rocco) will be seventh-graders at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest this fall; Lola enters the sixth grade at DPMS. Each headed to Indy to run in an AAU Junior Olympic Games regional qualifier track meet, as

members of the Waukegan Invaders track and field club team. “Hot. It was incredibly hot there, 96 degrees,” Vacala recalls. “The kids had cold rags around their necks, constantly. We made sure the kids stayed hydrated all day every day. Fans, some fans, kept them cool, too, but there were times when the kids had to sit in air-conditioned cars in between events.” The coolest news? The Marsico sisters raced to a combined six age-group AAU Junior Olympic Games berths. The meet runs from July 25-August 4 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Isabella paced the trio at the regional qualifier with three berths, advancing to the national meet after finishing first in the 800- and 1500-meter events and collaborating with three other Invaders (twins and DPMS students Olivia and Alexandra Palmberg, along with Savannah Vasher, daughter of former Chicago Bears cornerback Nathan Vasher) to top the field in the 3200 relay. Olivia motored to top-six finishes in the 800 and 1500, and Lola’s strong finishing kick and sixth-place showing in the 400 meant she would get to join her mother and older sisters for another summer trip to a track meet. “A huge deal,” Vacala, the sisters’ chief videographer, says of the AAU JO Games. “It’s a huge honor to compete in a meet like that. Did I think

all three would make it? No, not at all. Olivia came out of nowhere to do as well as she did, improving her times drastically. Lola, wow, what she did, how hard she ran at the end of the 400, was amazing, great to see. “So happy for her, for all three of them,” the proud mother adds. Isabella — sixth in the 800 and ninth in the 1600 at the Illinois Elementary School Association state track and field meet in East Peoria in May — hasn’t lost an AAU race since beginning her AAU career in 2017. Her personal-best time in the 1500 is 5:02, clocked this year, but it likely would have been a sub-five-minute time had she had some fast company from her fellow racers at the end of the race. Hearing others’ footsteps tends to push an elite runner to better times. Vacala expects her decorated, highly competitive daughter to be pushed at the JO meet in Iowa. “This takes discipline, succeeding in a sport like track,” Vacala says, adding the Waukegan Invaders, coached by Kenneth Almond, practice two hours (6:30-8:30 p.m.) three days a week and compete

on most weekends during the club season. “The coach is pretty strict, and the amount of time the kids spend training and competing is pretty significant. They’re also told not to drink pop, not to eat junk food.” Each Marsico sister sports a double French braid hairstyle on Race Days. Each also covers parts of her locks with a Nike headband on Race Days. The Marsico with the high pink or high purple socks on Race Days? Isabella. Only Isabella. Signature looks at track meets come in handy, especially when you’re related to runners wearing distinctive garb and accessories and you want to know exactly where they are from behind your video device. The girls’ No. 1 fan might very well be triplet Rocco Marsico, who ran cross country at DPMS for the first time last fall and, as a Lake Forest Lacrosse Association middie, battled in a recent all-star game. Ask Rocco about his sisters’ results at meets, about his sisters’ personal-best times, about anything that has to do with his three sisters and track. He’ll spew quick answers, a Sports Information Director in the making.

There’s more to each sister than running briskly around an oval. Isabella welcomes any challenge in any sport, capable of picking up, say, a ping-pong paddle for the first time and using it to smack shots past a seasoned opponent and then finding the nearest hoops court and netting layups at will in a pick-up game. Olivia keeps her room at home cleaner than the other two do and likes to swim and play volleyball. And Lola loves executing gymnastics routines, even atop as cushiony pole vault landing area — as long as competing pole vaulters aren’t in the vicinity. Before departing Indianapolis following that grueling meet in stifling conditions last month, the Marsico sisters, owners of six medals, piled into the family vehicle again, angling and contorting their frames to find room among all those items that had been reloaded. Cap'n Clutch New Trier’s Weaver embraces roles as attacking midfielder and consummate leader BY BILL MCLEAN

A New Trier boys soccer player continues to struggle in a match. He delivers a pass toward the vicinity of a wide-open Trevian, who halts abruptly and turns around because the pass is errant, too strong. The struggling player later elevates and whiffs on a header attempt. The struggling player’s shoulders slump, mirroring the formation of his frown. Attacking center-midfielder Logan Weaver notices his teammate’s frustration and decides to do something about it. “Logan,” Trevians coach Matt Ravenscraft says of the NT senior-to-be and Wilmette resident, “would play closer to that struggling teammate last year, connect [via a pass] a few times with that player, do whatever he could to boost the confidence of that player. Logan then would go back to doing his thing. He manages the game well, plays our sport’s quarterback role effectively as a player and as a leader.” The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Weaver was a captain for last year’s Class 4A sectional semifinalist, a 19-4 squad. He’ll serve as a captain again this fall. His take on what he does to reverse a teammate’s frown in mid-match? A shrug of his positive shoulders, because it’s the right thing to do. “No one role on a team in soccer is more important than the other roles,” says Weaver, who ver-

bally committed to play men’s soccer at Northwestern University near the end of the 2017 season. “I dropped basketball to concentrate on soccer in the eighth grade because soccer is more team-oriented than basketball is. We’re all brothers in soccer. If a teammate is having a tough day, a tough stretch out there, the team suffers. You need all 11 players, plus the 10 or so on the bench, to succeed. New Trier’s boys soccer program is about creating a comfortable environment. “I’m always interested in doing my part to make everybody feel comfortable.” Members of New Trier’s boys soccer team read Legacy, a book by James Kerr, last year. It’s about the New Zealand national rugby union team, named

the All Blacks. The club made its international debut in 1903, beginning a run of dominance that shows no sign of abating. The All Blacks won the last two Rugby World Cups, in 2011 and 2015 and boast an all-time winning percentage of 77 against other national teams. The five-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots of the NFL have won 74 percent of their regular-season games under head coach Bill Belichick since 2000.

“I read a lot; I love to read,” says Weaver, vacationing in Italy with his family until early August. “I’d lost that love, from ninth grade to 11th, but I have it again. I’m interested in learning, getting motivated through reading. You can work to do everything better as an athlete, even the little things. If you do 100 little things one percent better, that makes you 100 percent better. When you’re a better player, you can change a game, and you can improve

your team.” Weaver — a right back in his freshman season — scored 10 goals and fed a team-high 17 assists in his junior season last fall, a year after playing deeper, defensively, as a center-mid. His transition from center-mid to attacking center-mid in one year? Smooth, almost frighteningly smooth. “We took a major step forward at the varsity level last year,” Ravenscraft says. “What Logan provided for us, both offensively and defensively, had a lot to do with that improvement. His athleticism is outstanding, especially his ability to accelerate, and he’s extremely fit. The pacer test I give our guys each preseason, Logan won that last fall. Easily. Nobody came close to him.” Weaver’s vision and sound sense of spacing on pitches also make him a handful in a sport in which the majority of play involves feet. A 2017 all-sectional selectee, he has, with the ball at his feet, that crowd-pleasing, coach-pleasing, teammate-pleasing ability to boot a pass through narrow openings amid traffic — chaos, really — in and around the midfield. “Logan was good, so good, at getting the ball to our front three [forwards],” Ravenscraft says. “People sitting way up in the stands during our games, maybe they could see what Logan saw. From my perspective along a sideline, I could not. Logan knows what he needs to do to play that perfect pass, to deliver it at the angle it needs to be delivered. His ability to distribute is special. “And I expect our team to be as dynamic this year as it was last year, with Logan’s talent and high soccer IQ returning.” Weaver’s father, Thomas, played baseball until his freshman year in high school. Weaver’s mother, Therese, was captain of a cheerleading squad. They have four kids, all of them either Division I athletes or future Division I athletes. All of them. The eldest, Jessica, played soccer at DePaul; Claire plays field hockey at Villanova; and Emma, a junior-to-be at NT, verbally committed to play soccer at Villanova. “Great fit for him,” Ravenscraft says of Logan Weaver suiting up for Northwestern’s Wildcats, beginning in the fall of 2019. “I’m thrilled. He’ll play close to home, and we’ll be able to watch him play.” The coach heard Weaver give a speech following the Trevians’ season last fall. Weaver delivered heartfelt words at the team banquet, proving he doesn’t always need a soccer ball to come through in the clutch on a big stage. His audience that night included 11 New Trier senior soccer players. Weaver singled out each of them. “Logan,” Ravenscraft recalls, “told us what each senior meant to him. Fantastic. It was a fantastic speech. It didn’t surprise me. Nobody in the room was surprised. Logan is mature beyond his years, has been since I first met him. He’s articulate, bright, strong in the classroom, and he thinks about life in a good way, a refreshing way.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Georgetown University, late 1980s. History major/sailing team member Kevin Considine prepares sandwiches at the university’s student-run deli. Considine becomes better at preparing sandwiches. Becomes one of the deli’s managers. “That’s where I learned to make sandwiches,” Considine, after ordering scrambled eggs with spinach and tomatoes, breakfast potatoes and an English muffin at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest, recalls. “I take my sandwiches very seriously; I was a picky eater while growing up. My go-to sandwich now is a turkey and bacon Panini. You want to know Kevin’s Theory of Food? Ready for this? It’s, ‘Food always tastes better when you add cheese and bacon to it.’ Always. Bring home the bacon. A big part of Considine’s occupation today is helping men and women fill open occupations at a variety of Lake County-based businesses to do just that for their families. The 52-year-old resident of Lake Bluff has been president and CEO of Lincolnshire-based Lake County Partners (LCP) for a little more than a year — after serving the go-to organization for economic development in Lake County as its managing director for three years. LCP is a private, nonprofit that works to maintain economic vitality and quality of life in Lake County by attracting, retaining and expanding businesses, creating and maintaining quality jobs, stimulating capital investment, pursuing economic diversity and improving the county’s business climate. “We play connector,” Considine, a 1984 Loyola Academy graduate, explains. “I’ll give you an example. A company in Lake County was looking for a welder. I had heard of a welder who had been laid off. We contacted the outof-work welder and told him about the opening. A connection was made.” LCP and several of its partners, including the College of Lake County in Grayslake, held an internship and career fair at the college not too long ago. Young, curious career seekers entered a cavernous area full of booths and asked questions. Employers of Lake County businesses, mostly in the manufacturing and health sciences industries, answered them. “We had created our Workforce Ecosystem at

LCP to sponsor such an event, to stage a gathering beneficial to both the companies and attendees,” Considine says. “We worked with the Lake County Development Department in Waukegan, with schools and towns and local businesses. “It’s important to Lake County that there is an ample talent pipeline in place as people with manufacturing jobs get closer to retirement age and the demand for technical skills rises,” he adds. Lake County is home to more manufacturing jobs than most people in Lake County realize, Considine notes. Manufacturing jobs today are nothing like the manufacturing jobs in the 1970s and 1980s. “Detroit, think of Detroit, think of the manufacturing jobs in that city and cities like it in those decades,” Considine says. “Those jobs were considered gritty, and they were gritty. Today they’re not; they’re cleaner, much cleaner. How many people know that? And a welder making $80,000 a year, $100,000 with overtime pay, is not unusual today.” The youngest of nine children (he has seven sisters), Considine earned wages for the first time as a teen, stringing tennis rackets and re-lacing baseball gloves and helping young hockey players find gear that fit at Wilmette Bicycle & Sport Shop. Considine worked with two others from Loyola Academy at the time, along with three New Trier students. Rivalry? What rivalry? “The shop also sold fishing gear, fishing licenses,” Considine says. “A tall man walked in one day, looking to purchase a fishing license. The customer looked familiar. It was Orlando Woolridge, the Chicago Bull, a professional basketball player walking around the shop, right near me. You don’t forget a day like that.” Considine, in the summers during his Georgetown years, taught sailing to kids and adults who signed up for lessons at the Northwestern University Sailing Center, and he still can’t believe he was able to work without having to wear shoes.

Considine got his MBA at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and collected his master’s degree in spiritual direction at Loyola University in Chicago. He was a sales rep for the Orlando Sentinel newspaper when he met his future wife, Jami, then a marketing manager for the Sentinel’s magazine group. “Funny story,” Considine says. “Our first date, if you could call it that, was in the Orlando Sentinel parking lot. On New Year’s Eve. We talked for two hours. She had made plans to be somewhere else on that night. She still ended up going, but she was late.” Jami is an administrator with Assistance in Healthcare, a nonprofit in Zion. Kevin, a past president of the Lake Bluff Park District board of commissioners, and Jami have two daughters, Lake Forest High School senior-to-be Sarah (a standout field hockey and lacrosse player) and LFHS sophomore-to-be Mary (a dancer and poms member). Their dad lifts a forkful of scrambled eggs — minus cheese, minus bacon — and consumes it at Egg Harbor Café. He’ll golf later this summer, I learn. He’ll enjoy watching Sarah play field hockey and Mary dance this fall. He’ll likely help Sarah move into a college dorm late next summer and do the same for Mary in 2021. “Not every 18-year-old is ready for college; some want to work full-time, need to work full-time, right after high school,” Considine says. “We’re well aware of that at Lake County Partners. If that’s the case, our thinking is, ‘Fine, but let’s do what we can to make sure that 18-year-old gets on the right path and help him or her build a life through a job.’ When that 18-year-old becomes a 20-year-old and is still with the company, hoping to become, say, a supervisor?
