Driven Senior Golfers Set to Entertain at Exmoor BY BILL MCLEAN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
In late May former PGA Tour professional Fred Funk got his first eyeful of Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park. The view accelerated his heartbeat. The 61-year-old’s adrenaline flow practically matched a whitewater-rapids rate. “I got amped up the minute the car I was in entered the grounds,” Funk told a throng of journalists May 30 at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship Media Day, held at a golf club built in 1896 — the third oldest golf club in Illinois. “Right away you notice and appreciate the history of an old venue like this one, along with the sights, the feel of it. “I love courses like this one, courses that were built and designed before the existence of bulldozers.” Funk and 77 other PGA TOUR Champions competitors might very well move the earth at Exmoor from July 12-15 with the shots generated by the blades of their clubs. Great shots plus thunderous applause from a multitude of spectators, after all, sometimes equals a shifting terra firma. The Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship is one of five PGA TOUR Champions major tournaments each year, and it will be the first professional event hosted by Exmoor and the first major senior championship in the greater Chicago area since 1997. Exmoor’s par-72 tournament track covers 7,149 yards. PGA TOUR Champions members are 50 and older. “People who come out to watch us are shocked at our high level of play,” said Funk, who has won nine PGA TOUR Champions events, including three majors (the 2008 and 2010 JELD-WEN Tradition Continued on PG 10

Ross in 1915 and restored by golf architect Ron Prichard in 2003. “It’s an old-school course, very fair, with everything in front of you. The greens are deceiving. “The membership,” he added, “is excited about this opportunity for the club. People running restaurants and hotels in the area are excited. Fort Sheridan 2.0: Rehabbed Preserve To Reopen BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
People will soon be able to take advantage of Fort Sheridan’s scenic trails with stunning views of Lake Michigan. After much anticipation the Fort Sheridan southern trails are expected to open for public use the first week of July. “I’m very excited that this project is nearing completion,” said Lake County Board Member Paul Frank. “It’s a little later than we had hoped, but to have something that’s fully accessible for all residents to use is a great improvement, and the reopening of this preserve is going to be a fantastic asset to our community.” The Army Corps of Engineers began the restoration project with the 2015 Master Plan for Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve. The southern part of the preserve goes from Sheridan Road along the southern portion of the preserve, over a bridge, and down a path to the lakefront. The rehab added a new viewing platform at the top and new restrooms in the parking lot. There are several trails throughout the preserve. Frank said the preserve that is reopening is the asphalt paved trail. In addition, some of the areas that were wood chipped before are now asphalt, and there are a couple of small wooden plank bridges to make it fully accessible and improve the stability of the trails. Some portions of the asphalt trail have not been completed. “One of the issues that causes a time delay with asphalt paving is that there’s

you can still access it by bike and by foot,” said Frank. Frank told DailyNorthShore that the northern trails will not reopen in July, as they are more like prairie trails that are seeded, not paved. “The work is done, but because they are natural planted trails, those seedings require an extra season of growth,” he said. “So they will remain closed to allow those plants to take better footing and to ensure their survival.” Frank added that those trails will probably reopen in 2019. In addition to being a Lake County Board member, Frank and the other board members also serve as Lake County Forest Preserves District commissioners. “That’s why we have jurisdiction over the Forest Preserve District as well,” he said. “They are two separate bodies, and Fort Sheridan is a preserve of the Forest Preserve District.” Frank has been on the Lake County Board since 2016; prior to that he served on the Highland Park City Council for five and a half years. Frank looks forward to the reopening of the Fort Sheridan southern trails, where he will enjoy carefree walks with his family. In the meantime, he would like to express his gratitude to the community. Cow Parsnip Is Bad, But It’s No Hogweed BY KARINA KAVANAGH DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
Lake Bluff resident Lise Dominique recently stumbled upon something worrisome while walking her dogs -- a plant called cow parsnip, which causes skin irritation and blistering burns on humans and animals. She had previously seen one plant last summer, and this summer in the same spot saw three separate plants. Dominique brought the presence of the plant to the attention of a local Facebook group. Upon discovering it, she thought it may have been hogweed, an extremely rare and harmful invasive species native to Central Asia and invasive in the United States. Hogweed causes third-degree burns and deep scarring on the skin and can even lead to blindness if any sap enters the eye. Recently, there has been a large outbreak of hogweed in Virginia, with several burns reported. Fortunately, plant identification experts from Lake Forest Open Lands Association and Lake Bluff Open Lands Association, as well as the Chicago Botanic Garden, agree that the plant found by Dominique is not hogweed. Instead, it’s a similar plant within the same family called cow parsnip. This is not an invasive species, though it is not extremely common, and is less harmful than hogweed. While the two plants share several features, they

can easily be distinguished by their size. Cow parsnip grows up to six feet tall, and hogweed (often appropriately called “giant hogweed”) can reach heights of 18 feet, with leaves measuring five feet across. Cow parsnip can be identified by its six-foot
height and its large umbrellas of white flowers, similar to Queen Anne’s lace, though much larger. The flower clusters can grow up to a foot in diameter. If you believe you have found cow parsnip in your yard, treat it with caution and do not touch it. Do
not mow, cut, or weed whack the plant, as this can lead to the spread of harmful sap. The best removal option is to consult a plant specialist, who will use herbicide to kill the plant and then safely remove it. In the long term, pulling the flowers off the plant for a few consecutive years could eliminate it from the property without the use of chemicals, but this would mean keeping the plant for at least three years. Cow parsnip can be especially harmful to dogs if eaten, so keep an eye on your furry friends during their walks, and check yards for any new growth.
Makerspace Offers Kids Open-ended Opportunities BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
One of the mantras of Bit Space, a makerspace in downtown Wilmette that just celebrated its first year, is “If you make it you can take it.” That’s because the kid-focused makerspace is truly about encouraging a future generation of inventors, designers and entrepreneurs, rather than simply consumers. The roughly 3,000-square-foot space at 1131 Greenleaf Avenue (formerly a dance studio and sub shop) is full of tools ranging from traditional hammers, saws and nails to new wave technology such as 3D printers, laser cutters and computers. “We have a certain amount of magic here. We give kids the opportunity to do something for real here,” Pawel Kowalczyk, who runs Bit Space in Wilmette, told DailyNorthShore. Bit Space was the brainchild of founder Thomas Kearns, a professor at the architecture school at Illinois Institute of Technology, who realized many of his students had never picked up a saw. He launched Bit Space three years ago at its Lincoln Square location in Chicago, to encourage an interest and self-confidence in knowing how to build something from scratch in kids ages six to 18. Bit Space is divided into three distinct areas. The first area is the design communication space where the creative thinking begins. Kids are encouraged to come up with ideas on their own, by sketching out and modeling a design. “We try to tell them as little as possible what to make. We are project-based and kid-focused,” Kowalczyk explained. A team of “guides” — each of whom bring ex-

pertise in maker fields such as computer programming, engineering, architecture or industrial design — staffs Bit Space and keeps the kids on track. Participants receive a lesson on how to use each of the tools, as well as how to keep the area neat and tidy. “We try to teach to the top and give them as much as they can handle,” Kowalczyk said. The kids learn about measuring, context, design and scale — everything they need for a project from concept to completion.

The window sill is filled with various items that students have made, many with a laser cutter, such as signs, games, gears and wheels, fidget spinners and 3-D shapes. “They are so proud of all of the stuff that they make,” Mike Hurley, general manager of Bit Space, told DailyNorthShore. The third space is the “bytes room” where kids learn circuitry, computer programming and 3-D modeling and printing. Here participants have the opportunity to design their own virtual world on a computer. But it is also where kids can bridge the virtual world to the physical world. For example, one group made an arcade console from wood that was used in a video game they created. During the school year, Bit Space offers an after school “open shop” where kids can drop in and make any project they can imagine. The openended program offers kids a time to take a deep dive into an idea. For example, a 12-year-old boy made his own articulated wings for a phoenix Halloween costume. Bit Space also runs afterschool programs at elementary schools in Wilmette and birthday parties on the weekends. Week-long camps are offered during the summer, each with their own open-ended theme and divided by age groups. The themes include courts and castles, music video or escape room. The 9- to 12-year-old group is challenged each week to fill up an open cube space, creating their own imaginary world. At the end of each week, parents are invited for a exhibition to see what campers created. “It’s like an art instillation in some ways, Kowalczyk said. Hearth Keeps It Local with Summer Chef Series BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
Chef Michael Elliott of Hearth Restaurant & Lounge takes a hands-off approach to cooking during the summer months when he enjoys a ready supply of local fruits and vegetables. “In general we move into a lighter cuisine (in the summer) and less manipulation of food to highlight what these hard working people have grown for us,” Elliott told DailyNorthShore. When Elliott says local he really means it. Much of Hearth’s fresh produce is sourced directly from The Talking Farm, a nonprofit urban farm located on Howard Street in Skokie. “It’s really cool to be able to use something that is not only local but also hyperlocal,” Elliott said. Elliott also sources ingredients directly from the Evanston Farmer’s Market. Hearth is also taking a local approach with the launching of its new summer chef series, offering a multi-course tasting menu highlighting various regional farms and local businesses on Wednesday evenings. “It’s having a good time while sharing local businesses,” Elliott said. In the first of the series, Elliott teamed up with Ellen King of Hewn Bakery to offer a six-course menu that incorporated Hewn’s breads and grains into the main courses, and was topped off with pastries prepared by King. For example, diners enjoyed a brioche-crusted halibut — using Hewn’s breadcrumbs — as well as an onion rye puree accompanying a short rib dish, made from Hewn’s rye bread. While the first summer series event was more formal, with Elliott and King both presenting to diners who enjoyed the meal as a private dining room event, others will be more casual specialty four-course menus featuring local produce that will be offered as an option every Wednesday night. A beverage pairing selected by Ryan Scheler, Hearth’s beverage director and general manager, will also be offered with each course with an eye towards accessibility. “We are trying to make it affordable and accessible to come out on a Wednesday,” Scheler said. Scheler, who together with Elliott conceived of the summer series, is currently reaching out to other local businesses to team up with such as Sketchbook Brewing. He views it as a way to utilize fresh ingredients, while offering something new and different. “It is a way to do something interesting and creative on the one side, while drawing the interest of our customers,” Scheler said. Aside from the summer series, the focus of Hearth’s menu is on seasonal and local ingredients. Elliott enjoys the change of the seasons, providing him the opportunity to change up the menu. “I love seasonal changes because I get bored with the food,” he noted. While some chefs are known for a signature dish, Elliott prefers to keep trying new ideas. “We try our best to do something different. It keeps people interested,” he said. That includes types of cuisine as well. “We call ourselves contemporary global because it gives us a blanket to do whatever we want,” Elliott said. Elliott enjoys the new direction of Hearth Restaurant, which is less formal than its predecessor

O say can you … spike? And block? Recent New Trier graduate James Snyder certainly can, and the 6-foot-6, 190-pound middle blocker proved that emphatically this past spring on volleyball courts, helping a 34-8 squad of Trevians finish fourth at the state tournament in Hoffman Estates. The two-year varsity spiker also impressed spectators and teammates and opponents and coaches and referees as the third-year national anthem singer before Trevians home matches. “I first met James in the eighth-grade, at a practice

His grandfather in Arizona, Sherwin, was a church organist; call him a pianist these days. James’ father, David, is a choir singer. James performed for too many musical groups at New Trier to list here and warbled in the school’s 2017-18 winter musical. Spectators at New Trier’s home boys volleyball contests next spring will have to somehow manage without experiencing the pleasure of hearing Snyder’s rendition of the national anthem — and Snyder’s thunderous kills and blocks. He notched single-match highs of seven kills and six blocks in 2018. “That was sad, watching and listening to James sing at our final home match this spring,” Haak says. “He was full of emotion, as usual, when he sang that night. But I could see how moved he was, with it being the last time he’d ever sing before playing for New Trier. I’ll remember a lot about that night, especially James singing the national anthem in our gym. “Each year I tell all my players to take some mental pictures during the season, because the high school years go so quickly.” Snyder — an Eagle Scout, the recipient of New Trier’s 2017-18 Spirit Award and a New Trier com-

mencement speaker earlier this month — intends to slide quickly and pop heartily to block kill attempts as a club volleyball player at the University of Indiana, where he’ll study business. Before then, Snyder will make a couple of appearances to help Haak run her summer volleyball camp at the school and continue to coach Little Leaguers. Snyder’s New Trier Bulldogs were 7-3 through June 14. “I’m a vocal baseball coach, a loud one,” Snyder says. “But I like to demonstrate things to my players, grab a glove and show them the right way to make a play rather than simply tell them.” Haak sees Snyder coaching volleyball players someday. Maybe full-time. “His No. 1 trait as a player for us was how hard he worked in matches,” Haak says. “Middle blockers don’t get recognized often for what they do for a team. The number of blocks James had in a match was a stat, just a stat. But there isn’t a stat for creating a tough defense the way James did with his hustle and determination. I never had to urge him to play harder, never had to tell him, ‘Let’s go!’ “And he’s got,” the coach adds, “the traits of an effective coach — communication skills, leadership, energy, positivity.” Nothing like ending a story about a singer on a high note. Hamstrung no more Healthy Hourihane — a recent North Shore Country Day School graduate and two-time field hockey all-stare — eager for Big Ten action at Ohio State University BY BILL MCLEAN
The hamstring. The right hamstring. Again. Aargh. Jessica Hourihane had to exit another North Shore Country Day School field hockey game after aggravating the large muscle she had injured earlier in 2017, her senior season. If there’s a place worse than being forced to take up space on a sideline in the middle of a field hockey game, any field hockey game, the highly competitive Hourihane — a four-year varsity player and two-time all-stater — would do whatever she could to avoid occupying that space. The 5-foot-4 center-forward loves to play field hockey. Needs to play hockey. Not being able to blast past defenders with her speed? Agony. Not being able to pounce on a rebound shot

and stun a goalie with a well-placed shot-ongoal? Agony times … 100. “Jessica was quite bummed about coming out of the game, upset and f rustrated,” recalls Mullery Doar, then a Raiders assistant coach and now the school’s head field hockey coach. “Not long after that, as we prepared to call a [penalty] corner play, Jessica leans toward me on the sideline and tells me which play to call. There she was, hurting, but her head was still in the game. You know what? Her call was the right call. “We scored on the play.” That smart, savvy, field hockey-loving Hourihane is in Columbus, Ohio, this month, already training with her Ohio State University field hockey teammates and taking a trio of classes. The Winnetkan’s right hammy? Healthy. Strong. The injury she had originally incurred during a practice last fall kept her on the sideline for two to three weeks. She aggravated it twice; it never fully healed. She battled in the state championship game — a 2-0 loss to Lake Forest High School in late October — but had to accept jogging briskly as her full-tilt mode. “I could teach everything there is to know about a hamstring to anybody who wants to

She’s a tiger out there, chasing anyone down with her speed. Jessica also uses space very well, cutting at appropriate times, and the way she plays, the desire with which she plays, motivates and inspires her teammates.” An ice hockey player before discovering field hockey, Hourihane tried the iceless hockey sport in the summer before the sixth grade. Her mom, Kristina, had nudged her toward field hockey. Jessica Hourihane got along with field hockey. In no time. “Loved it immediately,” Hourihane says. “It clicked for me.” Two summers later, Hourihane showed up at a summer field hockey camp, run by Doar and other coaches. In early October this fall, she and her Buckeyes teammates will face Northwestern University’s Wildcats in Evanston. Ace storyteller Rochelle Distelheim has a doozy of a story to tell, and she shares it with her first-time breakfast mate at a booth in a quiet corner at Country Kitchen in Highland Park. A woman meets a man, a Chicago dermatologist, decades ago at a summer event in Wisconsin and later makes an appointment to see him at his office on Michigan Avenue. Not because she has an ailment that needs immediate attention, unless you think smitten is a condition that needs to be examined immediately. The woman gets all dressed up for the appointment. She has to convince herself that she has some skin condition before entering the dermatologist’s office. Something. Anything. She comes up with something — a made-up ailment. Splotches. Yes, splotches on her arms. That’s what she’ll tell the doctor she thinks she has. Everyone gets splotches in the summertime, right? Distelheim continues with her story. The dermatologist later asks the woman out for drinks. They both get dressed up for the date. They clink-clink glasses in the basement of the Palmer House in Chicago, fall in love, get married in California nearly two years later and stay married for 66 years. End of delightful story. Is it fiction? Maybe. Maybe not. But I’m here at Country Kitchen to hear all about another romantic narrative, about Distelheim’s debut novel, Sadie in Love (Copyright 2018, Aubade Publishing, 222 pages). What I love? That Distelheim, a Highland Park resident since 1956 and a mother of two lawyers (Ellen and Laura) and a journalist (Lisa), is a first-time novelist at the age of … 90. You don’t look 90! She hears that often, way too often. Her quick, spunky, sassy response: “What is 90 supposed to look like? I’ve worn the same face all my life!” Sadie in Love is a romantic comedy set in 1913 in New York City’s Lower East Side. A widow and a Jewish immigrant, 40-something Sadie Schuster sells love knots, each made from a schmattah (a small piece of fabric), and melts at the sight of a muscular ice peddler and poetry devotee named Herschl Diamond. Well into the book, Sadie attends a wedding. Herschl had been hired to work it, hauler of 100 pounds of ice to be placed in the icebox in the banquet hall kitchen. Herschl had also received an invitation to the wedding. Sadie enters a room full of guests and hopes to spot one strapping man, her eyes darting here and there. Back to here. Back to there. In Distelheim’s words: Scanning the crowd, [Sadie] searched for that one sweet face she needed to calm her jangled-up nerves. Nothing. No Herschl seated up front, no sign of him in the aisles or — standing on tiptoes — at the back of the hall. He had come, maybe, but he had def initely gone.

You, the reader, are in the room with Sadie. Distelheim’s words, her poetry-laced prose, put you there. You see Sadie’s urgency, Sadie’s growing dismay. You feel for her. And you stand on your tiptoes with her. You root for Sadie’s face to soften, to transform from clenched to euphoric upon the discovery of her Herschl. “ Writing comforted me at an early age,”
Distelheim, a graduate of John Marshall High School in Chicago, says after ordering a two-egg omelet with broccoli and spinach, a plate of cucumbers and whole wheat toast. “I wrote in notebooks in my youth, constantly wrote, filling the pages with my impressions of people and describing how I’d like to resolve a situation I was facing or at least handle it, deal with it. Writing was my companion. It still is. I wrote opinions, opinion pieces, for the student newspaper in high school. I pointed things out to our readers with my opinions. “I also wrote a lot, mainly short stories, while my daughters took naps.” The monthly women’s magazine McCall ’s was the first periodical to publish a Distelheim short story. Its title: “Home Movies.” It moved a reader — an editor of another publication, specifically — to contact Distelheim and assign her to craft a feature about a local female surgeon. “A female surgeon back then … that was radical,” recalls Distelheim, who also wrote an exten-

sive magazine profile on Gloria Steinem after traveling with the writer/lecturer/political activist/feminist organizer. “I was told to spend time with the surgeon in her office and in the hospital and humanize this professional woman in her mid-30s, this virtual pioneer in the field of medicine. She let me follow her around for a week, a whole week. Can you believe that? I even watched her operate on a three-year-old boy with a kidney ailment. Will never forget it. Never. “What an experience that was for me.” Pieces authored by the award-winning Distelheim, a past president of an Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW ), appeared in The North American Review, Ascent, Story Quarterly, Good Housekeeping, Working Woman and Ladies Home Journal, among many others. She earned a Katherine Anne Porter Prize (short fiction), and her short story “More Cousin’s Club than Country” won the 2017 Gival Press Award. Fellowships? The Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism graduate has received heaps of them, including more than one f rom Lake Forest-based Ragdale Foundation. On the Acknowledgements page of her first novel, Distelheim thanked her fellow Writers of Glencoe for listening to her development of Sadie in print countless times and “helping me make her more alive each time.” She dedicated Sadie in Love to her late husband, Irv Distelheim, her beshert ( Yiddish for “meant to be, fated,” usually used romantically). Irving H. Distelheim, M.D. died in January at the age of 99. You remember Irv. Irv was the man who worked in the heart of Chicago, on the Magnificent Mile, as a … dermatologist. Yes, that dermatologist. “He believed in my writing since our first date,” a wide-eyed, splotch-free Rochelle Distelheim, her head tilted slightly to the right, says.
