Ravinia Festival Brawl With Ravinia Brewery Ends

FUNNY BUSINESS Comedian brings evening comedy series to The Book Stall

BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

The dispute between Ravinia Festival and Ravinia Brewing Company has been resolved. The brew pub plans to open temporarily just steps away from its permanent home at 594 Roger Williams Avenue in the Ravinia Business District. Meanwhile, construction is resuming on that space, which formerly housed Ravinia BBQ & Grill. “We’re excited to move forward, but we’re anxious to open this summer. So we’ve signed a lease at (the former) Madame ZuZu’s and are trying to open as quickly as possible,” said Kris Walker, managing partner. David Place and Brian Taylor are co-owners; all three have ties to Highland Park. Madame ZuZu’s Teahouse was located at 582 Roger Williams Avenue and was owned by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. After more than five-years, Madame ZuZu’s closed on March 18. Walker explained that once the former ZuZu’s space is up and running, it will serve as a temporary home for Ravinia Brewing Company, as there’s still a lot of construction that needs to be done on the new facility. Laible, who now serves as the master of ceremonies at large corporate events, relied on his connections in the entertainment industry to put together a show comprising veteran comedians such as Tim Walkoe, who was the headliner of the June show. In addition to experience as a headliner at more than 100 comedy clubs nationwide, Walkoe has appeared on HBO, Showtime and A&E. Laible was inspired to start his own comedy series after dipping his toe back into stand-up comedy at the Wilmette Theatre. He realized North Shore residents were interested in seeing quality shows close to home. “The idea is to go to a restaurant here before the show and have fun while we are doing it,” Laible said. Initially Laible was looking at restaurants as the venue of his comedy series, but after seeing Amy Sumpter perform as part of The Kates comedy troupe at The Book Stall, he changed his mind. Laible approached Stephanie Hochschild, owner of The Book Stall, with the idea of hosting the comedy series at the book store. “We’ve had some great success doing non-book events,” Hoschschild said. The brewery comprises one business with two concepts, said Walker: Ravinia Brewing Company, which will brew beer on site and include a full menu with wine and spirits, and Witty’s Refresher, an “old-school diner concept” complete with a soda fountain. If you can make a comedian laugh you are good,” he said. Laible, who worked as a comedian in the 1980s, acknowledged that many of the comedians at that time were exclusively white men. He hopes to bring more diversity to his lineup, including female comedians such as Amy Sumpter and Denise Medina, who both perform with The Kates comedy troupe — and people with different perspectives. Laible’s lineups include comedians who stick to one-liners, some who like to tell funny stories and others who use silly songs. “Just kind of different point of views. Some people are low lying. You just want to mix up the personalities on stage,” Laible said. So far the comedy series includes two events, the June show (which sold out long before the event), and a second show on July 17. Laible’s plan is to make the series a monthly event at The Book Stall, where he can build an audience as well as create a community for comedians. “I just want this to be a fun place for real comics to work out their act,” he said.

Market Square Courtyard To Be Unveiled in August BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

Crews are busy at work creating a new pedestrian courtyard behind the north side of Market Square in downtown Lake Forest for a grand opening on August 1. The courtyard will have a European feel, with brick and stone pavers, plantings and seating to encourage visitors to linger and relax. The new area will have an entrance next to Forest Bootery, as well as another entrance off Bank Lane near the post office. Once the project is complete in late July, the courtyard will complement the existing south terrace near the new Starbucks. The extensive renovation will transform an underutilized space, which primarily operated as a service alley, into a beautiful community space where people can gather. “It’s a more intimate environment, where you can get away from the hustle and bustle,” Christiane Fischer, senior asset manager for Mid-America Asset Management, Market Square’s manager, told DailyNorthShore. Gracefully Navigating Alzheimer’s BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

Michael Folio was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2012 at age 56, about four months after he and his wife Cheryl Levin-Folio were married. But instead of surrendering to the sadness, the Highland Park resident focused on making sure her husband had the best quality of life possible and still does. “Michael smiles at me every moment and that twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes is always there,” said Levin-Folio. “I’m hoping that it will last until he closes his eyes forever.” The Alzheimer’s Association launched “The Longest Day” on June 21, which is the longest day of the year and Summer Solstice. Thousands of people participated in different activities to support their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some startling statistics about Alzheimer’s: • 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s • By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million • Every 65 seconds someone in the Unites States develops the disease Closer to home, Levin-Folio has been the cochair for the NorthShore Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the past three years. “Our size has tripled since I have started, with now over 2,000 walkers,” said Levin-Folio. The NorthShore Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held on September 15, at Gallery Park in Glenview (The Glen). Although he was willing to take a special drivers test, he failed twice. “When Michael went to renew his driver’s license, they confiscated it and cut it up in front of him and I think that was more painful than just telling him not to drive,” said Levin-Folio. Fortunately, Levin-Folio found her husband a wonderful buddy, Lee Gimbel, to play golf, tennis, see movies, workout and go out for lunch three days a week for more than four years. In 2015, Levin-Folio retired to become his full-time caregiver, and she still made sure to schedule lots of “guy time” for her husband. Park Rehab Unearths Historic Bottles in Lake Bluff BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

When two Lake Bluff residents learned that the playground at Artesian Park was being replaced, they each decided to stop by and see if the excavation uncovered anything interesting. Nan Wick, a resident of Lake Bluff since 1958, has been collecting old beer cans with her son since the 1970s and always has her eye out for a good find. Wick happened to walk by the park one day when the gate was open, and she asked one of the workers if she could take a look. It turns out the workers had been storing bottles they found during the project in a pile under a tarp. It took Wick about two to three trips to sift through the roughly 200 bottles that had been uncovered, choosing the bottles she thought were the most interesting. “Basically because I am a collector at heart, is why I got going on this,” she said. Likewise, Michael Peters also visited the construction site to see if he could find some old bottles. Peters, a physician, grew up in Lake Bluff and knew the park once served as the village dump. He suspected he would find old bottles at the site — Peters collects antique bottles and is particularly interested in medicinal bottles — but was shocked by how many were there. “I was fully expecting to find bottles but I didn’t expect to find so many,” he said. Like

Wick, Peters sifted through the collection, looking for bottles that were embossed or handblown. Eventually, both Peters and Wick got in touch with the Lake Bluff History Museum, which now has a new display of select bottles in its new exhibit, “Found in Lake Bluff.” Peters also contributed bottles that were found around east Lake Bluff, frequently in friends’ and neighbors’ yards. The bottles on display date from as early as the late 1800s all the way to 1976, according to Pam Russell, vice president of the museum’s board of directors. Two of the bottles are from when a train derailed in Lake Bluff in 1976, carrying Hamm’s beer. But many of the bottles hark from a much earlier time. A wine bottle from the late 1800s was found, which is remarkable since the village was the site of the Methodists’ Lake Bluff Camp Meetings at that time, and the Methodists prohibited drinking, Russell noted. A number of medicine bottles were also found, one from the Naval Base Great Lakes; others held ingredients that were supposed to help all types of illnesses such as wild root, Dr. Price’s Delicious Flavoring Extract and castoria. Peters noted that just like today, historically there were a lot of nonprescription medicines that could be purchased, many at local pharmacies. All sorts of interesting bottles were found, such a milk bottle from Crabtree Farm, ink bottles, soda bottles, as well as a ballast bottle, used on ships, Russell said.

Russell suspects many of the bottles are from when the site served as the village dump, but she also thinks some bottles may have been tossed into Artesian Lake. In 1883 the drilling of an artesian well created a lake on that site, which existed until 1904, when the railroad built an underpass that caused the lake to drain, according to the Lake Bluff Park District’s website. The area was used as a dump until the 1930s,

when the Park District decided to convert the area into a recreational park, as it is used today. The recently discovered bottles are a hands-on example of that history for residents and others to enjoy. “(The exhibit) is just making the connection with what people ate and drank and the culture back then compared to today. Some things are still around today and some aren’t,” Russell said.

The sold-out Rock for Peace event raised funds for the House of Peace Shelter, a domestic violence shelter in Northern Lake County. Coupled with a deeply moving presentation about the transformations happening at the House of Peace and the eruption of spontaneous generosity from the crowd, those present shared in something truly special. The performance was capped by a tribute to Ronnie’s father, Lonnie Brooks. The event included BBQ along with an open bar before the music began. The shelter has housed 77 women and their 153 children, and more than 200 families receive counseling and other support services through the weekly Phoenix wellness program each year. houseofpeaceshelter.org

End goal Three-sport athlete Douglass aimed for wins, not honors, at Lake Forest High School BY BILL MCLEAN

Oops. Olivia Douglass, with her Lake Forest High School field hockey team up 6-0 late in a game, whacked a shot past the opposing goalie in an under-level game. The year was 2015, Douglass’ sophomore season. Scouts coach Cat Catanzaro had called the dogs off before the goal, meaning the very good players on the team were supposed to pass first and look to shoot … in the next game. Only a reserve player was allowed to take a shot at that juncture in the game. Douglass wasn’t that player. “Olivia scored by accident,” recalls Catanzaro, now the school’s varsity field hockey and varsity girls lacrosse coach. “When she realized what she had done, nobody on the field felt worse than she did. Olivia was so upset. She felt badly for her teammate, felt awful that she had taken away an opportunity for that teammate to score. She went right up to that teammate and said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ ” Spring of 2018, Douglass’ senior lacrosse season. Lake Forest High School’s varsity squad trails visiting New Trier by a wide margin in a supersectional game in late May. LFHS has possession, the ball nestled in the webbing of the stick in the hands of Scouts sophomore middie Gracie McGowan with a little more than 10 seconds remaining in the second half. Scouts senior Audrey Kaus tells McGowan, “ You have to pass it to Olivia.” McGowan passes the ball to Olivia Douglass, who collects it cleanly and prepares to shoot. The ball flies out of Douglass’ stick webbing and … Olivia Douglass danced about as often as she breathed from second through eighth grade. Her home away from Lake Forest Dance Academy was the Douglass home. Douglass’ feet pounded the floor to the music associated with jazz and ballet and hip-hop and several other dance genres. Douglass and her dance troupe mates won competitions, serious ones, ones featuring the best troupes from other states in the Midwest. “I loved dancing, loved doing it five days a week,” the recent LFHS graduate says. “My little sister, Ava [a freshman-to-be at LFHS], dances, and I sometimes get nostalgic when I watch her perform. “At the start of high school, I chose a different path.” Douglass — a daughter of former University of Wisconsin starting point guard Billy Douglass, whose stepfather, Bobby Douglass, passed footballs to Chicago Bears in NFL games in the 1970s — chose to become a three-sport athlete, suiting up as a forward in field hockey, a small forward in basketball and a middie in lacrosse. The only female varsity three-sport athlete at LFHS in 2017-18, the 5-foot-11 Douglass graduated with cum laude honors and eight varsity letters (two in field hockey, three each in basketball and lacrosse) and received the annual Female Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards selected by the school’s coaches. “Olivia’s biggest thing in her athletic career at

Lake Forest was her ability to use her experiences in other sports to improve her game in the sport she was playing at the time,” Catanzaro says. “She became a better athlete and a valuable teammate in all three sports by developing her skills in each of her sports.” University of Wisconsin-bound Douglass played on two state championship field hockey teams (2016, 2017), pacing the ’16 edition in scoring; served as a two-time captain and was a two-time Sportsmanship Award honoree in basketball; started for three varsity lacrosse teams and earned all-conference honors in ’17 and ’18; and, unofficially, came up with the most creative choreographed greeting during pre-tip introductions in hoops. You’ve seen those convoluted greetings, when two teammates slap, shake and bump hands at a dizzying rate and then sometimes follow that up with an airborne collision of upper arms. “Olivia’s [greeting] was the most complicated, mostly because hers involved some kicking,” recent LFHS graduate Annie Aberle says. “But we got really good at doing it by the end of the season.” Douglass’ favorite moment in basketball? Easy. The Scouts edged Warren’s Blue Devils in a lowscoring game for a Class 4A regional title in 2017. Those two state titles in field hockey thrilled her.

Her memories of LFHS avenging a loss to Stevenson to capture a 2018 sectional title in the inaugural Illinois High School Association girls lacrosse season will stick around for decades. “I’ve been fortunate,” the oh-so-humble Douglass says with a quick smile. “My dad never pushed me in athletics. Not once. He was so supportive through the years, so motivating, always there to give me tips, advice. His extensive background in sports helped me tremendously. My dad loves sports, loves to coach. “And my mom [real estate broker Sondra Douglass, another UW-Madison graduate] is the hardest worker and most optimistic person I know. I’m family-oriented.” Douglass’ sports “families” appreciated her teamfirst, me-last approach. She was one selfless “sib” — in field hockey, in basketball, in lacrosse. Aberle called Douglass “the glue” of her teams. Kaus’ most passionate and devoted teammate in her two sports (basketball and lacrosse) was Douglass. “Olivia wanted everybody to contribute in each game she played,” Catanzaro says. “You’re not going to find many who are as thoughtful and as caring as she is. You know what else made her such a valuable teammate, in addition to her skills? Her demeanor. It was usually very calm, reserved. Nothing

rattled her. Olivia’s teammates, near the end of a close, intense game, would look at her, notice how relaxed and in control she was and then think, ‘OK, everything is fine.’ ” Back to those waning seconds of that lacrosse supersectional between LFHS and New Trier last month … The ball flies out of Douglass’ stick webbing and … zips past the Trevians’ goalkeeper. Goal, LFHS. With 10 ticks left. Happy, jumping Scouts swarm Douglass and embrace Douglass and refuse to let her escape for quite a while. “Could not have happened to a better kid,” Catanzaro says. In the stands, Aberle and Douglass’ other sister, LFHS junior-to-be Halle Douglass, sit together. Olivia Douglass’ goal moves them. “Perfect. What a perfect way to end her final lacrosse season, her career as an athlete at Lake Forest High School,” Aberle recalls. “Halle and I looked at each other right after Olivia scored. “We both got emotional.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Working Bikes humming under Kaplan’s direction BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

The refugee from the East Africa country Eritrea lives in Rogers Park. It’s his sixth month in the United States. He owns a bicycle and a bicycle helmet and a bicycle lock, a trio of invaluable, donated items he had received f rom a nonprofit organization named Working Bikes. Working Bikes’ spot-on motto is, “Giving old bikes new homes.” Working Bikes Board President and Highland Park resident Phil Kaplan, sitting in a booth at Country Kitchen in his hometown, grows animated as he discusses the refugee and what the bike has meant to the Eritrean. “He’s using it, relying on it,” says the 67-year-old Kaplan, who grew up in … Rogers Park. “Our success at Working Bikes is measured by the positive impact bicycles have on people.” Stories. Kaplan has more stories. He shares, shares, shares, after ordering a cheddar cheese omelet, a plate of cucumbers, wheat toast and a small glass of orange juice. A student in another country in Africa no longer has to walk an hour to school now that he has a Working Bikes bicycle. His one-way commute now takes a brisk 15 minutes. A family man in another country in Africa is better equipped to provide for his family now that he’s able to use a Working Bikes bicycle to haul charcoal. Working Bikes sent a bicycle mechanic named Patrick to Uganda last year to train five local bicycle mechanics. Patrick became St. Patrick to eager employees in an African bike shop for eight weeks. “A bicycle can be empowering for people all over the world,” says Kaplan, adding Chicago-based Working Bikes, with help from a variety of partners — including police departments, park districts, individual donors, property owners and eight area bike shops, including Green Bay Cycles in Winnetka — processed nearly 10,000 bicycles at the organization’s warehouse in the Pilsen neighborhood last year. Some 8,400 ended up being donated, the rest sold. Kaplan’s home serves as one of the drop-off sites for bikes donated to Working Bikes. “We work closely with partners, and all have an interest in sustainability,” Kaplan, a retired Environmental Protection Agency official and the first Working Bikes volunteer from the North Shore, continues. “We’re constantly looking for ways to accept bikes from all kinds of entities, from people.

We can’t do this without the generosity of so many each year.” Lee Ravenscroft and Amy Little co-founded Working Bikes in 1999. Ravenscroft saw a pickup truck packed with old bikes heading to a scrap metal yard one day. Ravenscroft a p p ro ac h e d t h e driver of the pickup and paid $5 for each bike. “Lee,” Kaplan says, “rescued the bikes.” Kaplan, who earned psychology and MBA degrees at the University of Illinois, joined Working Bikes as a volunteer in 2008 and became its volunteer board president about five years later. The retiree with the energy of a man half his age devotes 30 hours per week, sometimes more, to an outfit that has recovered bikes f rom the Chicago area and other

Midwest locations and donated more than 70,000 two-wheelers worldwide and locally since its inception. Working Bikes volunteers gave a combined 15,000 hours of their time last year. Kaplan and his wife of 31 years, Marcia Bogolub, traveled to Africa last year, spending two weeks in Uganda, Zambia and Botswana. There they saw grateful natives receive bicycles, modes of transportation transforming lives. Instantly. That abandoned bike along the North Shore, left to rust at a park district bike rack? It’s restored and useful again, this time for a beaming student in Nakatindi, a village in Zambia. Months after a property manager in another North Shore community delivered another orphaned bike to Kaplan, that same bike is spinning and spinning today, utterly valuable, a middle-aged man’s ride to his new job in Botswana. The bike that brought joy to a teen in a leafy neighborhood in the heart of the United States now brings stability to a breadwinner in Africa. A genuine tool of empowerment, right before Phil’s eyes, right before Marcia’s eyes. “My wife,” Kaplan, father of two (Danny, 29, and Eli, 27), says, “helped me visualize what I’m doing in retirement now.” Marcia teaches yoga. Phil takes yoga classes taught by Marcia. Phil Kaplan figures he cycles at least 2,000 miles per year. Fiddle, meet Phil Kaplan. Hear fiddle wish it were as fit as Phil Kaplan. “My wife and I love to travel,” says Kaplan, adding the couple plans to visit Japan in the fall. “My dream trip, though, is to return to Af rica with Marcia and see the progress Working Bikes has made, to see the productivity of the trained bike mechanics, to see how bikes continue to change lives.” Working Bikes, (773) 847-5440, is located at 2434 S. Western Ave., Chicago. For more information about the organization please visit wo kingbikes.org. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
