By 6:30 a.m. on a recent Tuesday, soft shafts of morning sunlight had already worked their way past the West Lake Forest Train Station, and across Telegraph Road. There, they lit up the baby leaves of freshly emerged perennials, a cluster of holly bushes, sumac shrubs, hibiscus plantings, red twig dogwood, and assorted grasses. And down on the banks of the pond at their feet, a pretty little grove of young larch trees showed off the bright red buds that, come fall, will mature into pine cones. Not long ago, this peaceful oasis was nothing more than a retention pond, edges choked with a tangle of underbrush. But the Deerpath Garden Club of Lake Forest (DGC) saw potential for something more. And after two years investing resources, planning, and partnership with the City of Lake Forest, the pond and encircling garden have been reborn as a Garden of Remembrance dedicated to garden club members past and future. “We couldn’t be more thrilled that this has come to fruition,” says Connie Maines and Mary Carlson, DGC philanthropic co-chairs. The group will hold a ribbon cutting to unveil the new garden to the public at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19—followed by a garden walk with members and friends. Continued on PG 10

NEWS GARDEN Cont. from PG 1 As Maines and Carlson stated, it’s been a long time coming. The idea of cultivating gardens on the west side of Telegraph was a natural outgrowth of extensive work DGC had already done around the train station. In 1992 when the West Lake Forest Train Station had just been completed, the club took on the task of designing and installing gardens near Everett Road—an award-winning effort that continued to evolve with the addition of large plots of annual and perennial plantings, a limestone walkway, terrace, and limestone benches. The club also installed and dedicated a Blue Star Memorial Marker at the south end of the garden to honor the men and women who have served in the armed services. The new gardens to the west of Telegraph have poignant purpose as well. “We had recently lost three of our members and really wanted to do something special to commemorate all of the work they, and other members, have done to beautify Lake Forest,” says Maines. “Just planting a tree didn’t seem enough. With this garden, we’ve had the opportunity to make something beautiful out of a neglected space. People used to pass by this spot without notice. Now, with the park benches, memorial stone, garden, and the newly-functional fountain in the pond, people have a place to pause and reflect on the natural

beauty of this landscape.” For this location, a naturalistic plan was the way to go. Once underbrush was cleared, larch trees growing along the banks of the pond came into full view—a rare and lovely thing. Larches—deciduous trees that look like evergreens but drop their golden needles each fall—are difficult to source, but love a water-fed location. Filling in around these trees with plans from Craig Bergmann Landscape Design and the partnership of city planners, low-maintenance plants were chosen that could both take hold on the steep grades of the embankment and draw from the water in the pond. “We also took into consideration seasonal interest, including plants that will look beautiful throughout the year,” says Carlson. Plantings include serviceberry trees, Accolade elms, holly and sumac shrubs, and a mix of short, medium, and tall grasses—including sporobolus and andropogon. And, at the water’s edge, there are aquatic plantings of hibiscus, pontedaria, and liatrus. A seating area at the southeastern corner of the garden is situated next to a commemorative boulder emblazoned with the tribute: “The Deerpath Garden Club of Lake Forest dedicates this Garden of Remembrance in memory of past members and in celebration of those who continue our mission of Beautification.” Founded in 1960, the DGC was created by a group of friends in the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff

If you can hear the opening chords and immediately sing along to every word to the lyrics to such ‘80s Grammy hits as “Jessie’s Girl” or “Right Here Waiting,” you will be thrilled to learn that two of the biggest heartthrobs of that decade are at Ravinia this weekend in a double billing deserving of a Tiger Beat centerfold. The Australian-born Rick Springfield and Highland Park native Richard Marx appear together with full bands on Saturday, June 15. Tickets to the 7 p.m. concert were still available at press time. Springfield, who played the role of Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital before heading to the top of the charts in 1981, was one of the biggest pop superstars of the time. Marx, who lives in Lake Bluff and was designated as a Local Legend by the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society in 2013, remains the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts. It’s billed as a greatest hits event for both—one likely to result in a reunion of now middle-aged female fans who once pinned up posters of the pop stars adoringly (while wearing satin jackets and legwarmers). The good news is, both ‘80s icons have continued to evolve as artists. While fans will continue to go wild over their Top 40 classics, they can also enjoy hearing what they’ve been up to lately. THE CASE OF THE MISSING KEY WILMETTE SCAVENGER HUNT TURNS UP LESSONS FROM THE VILLAGE’S PAST. BY JEN SHEA THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

This caper opens like any other whodunit. Officer Engels has misplaced the key to the Gross Point jail cell. Whatever will he do? Find it, of course. But not without help from families like yours who are being recruited by the Wilmette Historical Museum to participate in an old-fashioned scavenger hunt. Think of it as a “Where’s Waldo?” for local history. From June 17 through August 4, kids aged 13 or younger can go to the Wilmette Historical Museum or the Youth Services Department of the Wilmette Public Library to get a game board and directions. The theme of the hunt is “Missing: Officer Engels’s Key!” Families are invited to find Officer Engels and his key at multiple locations around Wilmette. “This year’s theme to find Officer Engels’s missing key to the Gross Point jail cell is one that we have been wanting to do for a while,” Wilmette Historical Museum Community

Engagement Director Laura Winston says. “The jail cells are a highlight for most of our younger visitors to the museum.” This will be the fourth year of the scavenger hunt. The theme in previous years has ranged from portraits of Potawatomi people to images of Archange Ouilmette, the village’s namesake. The focus this year is on the Historical Museum building itself. “History is all about how things change, and the idea of repurposing buildings is an important one today,” Winston says. “After completing the hunt, we hope that kids will be able to explain why our museum building has a jail cell and that they will start noticing other buildings that have interesting life stories.” Local merchants have donated prizes for the scavenger hunt. Kids who find Officer Engels and his key at 10 or more locations can get a free ice cream cone at Homer’s Ice Cream. Kids who find Officer Engels and his key at 15 or more

locations get a free small pizza from Lou Malnati’s and are entered into a raffle. The raffle items include gifts from Lad & Lassie, Wilmette Bicycle & Sports, and the Wilmette Theatre. Winston says the greatest reward for her is meeting kids who have joined in the previous years’ scavenger hunts and still recall the Wilmette history stories they learned. “The hunt is a fun way for kids to learn about the history of their community,” she says. “Kids gain a greater sense of community pride when they know about its history.” The scavenger hunt is designed to be easy for kids to finish, because the point is to have fun learning. “The hunt can be completed at your own pace and is a good way to check out Wilmette businesses that you may never have visited,” Winston adds. Let’s not talk about the frigid/rainy/cold spring that never sprang or how fast this year has gone. Because here we are in June and that well-earned pedicure has barely seen the light of day. But we have some excellent news for you, as we introduce this new occasional feature to The North Shore Weekend—one that offers expert advice on some of the latest and greatest escapes that are just a few hours away. For our inaugural weekend excursion, we opted to see what was new up at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva. The AAA FourDiamond family favorite is celebrating its 25-year anniversary this summer with a full lineup of ‘90s throwbacks, special discounts, and limited edition offerings. When I traveled there with my own family to sample some new offerings at WELL Spa & Salon, it was everything I had heard about and more. It’s easy to see how the resort has thrived for a quarter century. Even with an infant in tow, Grand Geneva staff helped us balance the excitement of getting away with desperately needed relaxation and rejuvenation. The expansive property boasts hundreds of suites and villas with views that include nature at its finest. The villas are the perfect space to gather family and friends, or just take in the scenery and relax with the doors wide-open in your personal oasis. We used the full kitchen one evening to cook a delicious meal as a family before watching the sun set over the signature ginkgo trees. If you would rather leave the cooking at home, there are multiple restaurants on the property, or you can head downtown for some local favorites. After the concierge team graciously helped us book a babysitter for the evening, we headed over to Geneva ChopHouse in the main resort for dinner. The cuisine did not disappoint. We started with the Coconut Shrimp and Tuna Tataki at our server’s suggestion and it was perfect. For the main course, we enjoyed the prime rib-eye steak with grilled broccolini and the Skuna Bay Farm Raised Salmon with bulger wheat salad and cucumber yogurt. Our server hand selected our wine and her choice added the perfect touch to our already delicious meal. After dinner, we stopped next door to Evolve Nightclub for a nightcap and headed out to the Embers Terrace to lounge by the fire pit and take in the peace of the night before heading back to our room. The cocktails were delicious and if you’re looking for a local brew, Grand Geneva has New Glarus’ Spotted Cow, only found in Wisconsin. If you’re looking for an adventure while in Lake Geneva, there’s plenty to do around the lake or you can stay right on the resort property and try out the award-winning golf course, Adventure Center, zip lining, and two pools. You can even take the trolley down to Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark for a waterpark adventure. However, for busy moms like myself, the real attraction is the WELL Spa + Salon. seuse worked her wonders and the tension in my back from carrying an infant around was finally soothed. I also sprung for the salon’s luxury antiaging manicure and pedicure. It was fantastic and the specialty serum used left my skin looking firmer. Of course, the Deborah Lippmann polish helped as well. My day at the WELL Spa was exactly what this new mother needed.

There are also Italian classics such as the Stracciatella, (Italian chocolate chip) and the Gianduja (chocolate with hazelnuts and crunchy wafer bits). Five gelato chefs, split between the Highland Park location and another unit the Bruksch’s opened in Naperville in mid-February, make the gelatos— choosing from a roster of 70 flavors. They make the sorbets from a selection of 20 varieties. Baked goodies, which include a rainbow assortment of macarons, plus muffins, cookies, biscotti, scones, and a mini Bundt cake called a “bundtkin” supplied by local baker Holcomb Hollow—are all gluten and dairy free. Of these, the triple-berry cobbler swirl was my top choice. But beyond the gelato and sorbet, the unique coffee drinks (added to give guests more reason to come in throughout the cooler weather months) were my favorites. The gelatte is, you guessed it: the gelato of your choice, melted with hot espres-

so and blended with steamed milk. And the affogatto? An Italian coffee float, made with scoops of gelato and a float of espresso on top. Design for the space, by Des Plaines-based architect Peter Theodore, is boutique-modern in cool aqua and white, offset by a stretch of black wall, and gleaming silver-and-glass display cases that look like they’d fit in on the Avengers’ Benatar spaceship. The textured white floral wall facing the display case at the front is an especially nice touch. “One of the essential reasons for our desire to rebrand as independent operators was that we wanted to create a more inviting environment,” says Bruksch. “There’s a great deal of seasonality to operating a gelato business in Chicago. A medley of talents Highland Park HS swimmers and divers own a healthy mix of athleticism and academic aptitude. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Swimmers and divers at Highland Park High School don’t just hit the water. They hit the books. Hard. The Giants’ girls team achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.932 in the 2018-19 academic year; the school’s crew of boys, meanwhile, produced a 3.545 GPA. The girls compete in the fall, and the boys race

and plunge in the winter. Each GPA earned Academic All-American Scholar Team recognition by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA), with the girls team’s lofty figure ranking No. 1 in the country. “What our student-athletes did in the classroom blew me away,” says HPHS math teacher Tim Sirois, who coaches both of the school’s swimming and diving programs and serves as president-elect of NISCA. “I bragged about them to my classes. “I don’t know exactly why our athletes do so well, grade-wise, but I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the culture our programs establish each season. Our swimmers and divers value academics, and those new to our teams pick up on that.” Returning girls varsity members and incoming freshmen begin training for the fall season in early August, well before the start of classes. Team bonding also kicks off weeks before the rookies sit down to tackle their first high school tests away from the pool. “School comes first; every freshman in the program learns that pretty quickly,” says recent HPHS graduate Abby Smith, one of four former Giants (along with 2019 graduates Elizabeth Goldin, Emily Tack, and Nikki Chakravarthy) named a NISCA Academic All-American. “Every

now and then a student will get slammed with a lot of homework and sit out a practice in order to complete it. A young teammate came up to me once, asking about geometry. She knew it, understood the subject pretty well, but she just wanted to make sure she was doing it right. “I was happy to listen and help her.” Smith, set to head west and study and swim at Pomona College in Claremont, California, finished with a GPA considerably north of 4.0 after placing 15th in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 56.56, at last fall’s swimming and diving state meet at Evanston Township High School. During a visit to Pomona, a liberal arts college with Division III athletic programs, she found out how much the women’s swimming coaches care about guiding and developing swimmers who strive as diligently for high grades on land as they do for low times in water. Sirois and his HPHS assistant coaches espouse a similar credo, encouraging their charges to put well-roundedness before single-mindedness. “Tim,” Smith says, “is very accessible. He responds to emails right away. He cares about you, the swimmer, and you, the person. Need a one-onone with him, about swimming or about academ-

ics? He’s there for you.” Four recent male HPHS graduates also landed on the 2018-19 NISCA Academic All-American team. One of them, Dartmouth College-bound Andrew Vorobev, received Scholastic All-America honors from USA Swimming. Elliot Starkman, Konrad Schmid, and Jake Reisner emerged as the other Giants to have earned NISCA Academic All-America accolades. Vorobev sped to eighth place in the 100-yard backstroke (50.42) and to 13th place in the 100 butterfly (50.36) at his final prep state meet, held in February at New Trier High School. Schmid swam on three relay teams at state, and Reisner anchored the Giants’ 200 freestyle relay unit at state. “At our eighth-grade boys Parents’ Night, the parents discovered how much we stress academics at the high school level,” Sirois says. “They appreciated that. If a boy or a girl swimmer or diver in our programs is struggling in the classroom, that student will be able to rely on at least one teammate to help—and not just the kind of help a tutor would provide. Our kids are there to either point the struggling student in the right direction, or to say, ‘I’m available to help you overcome your difficulties

in any way I can.’ ” Because Sirois is a teacher at HPHS, he gets to track his athletes’ performances in the classroom. Noticing a Giant’s precipitous dip in a grade or two allows him to morph from a coach to a caseworker. But based on his athletes’ consistent propensity to ace courses, left and right—the Giants’ 2017 girls swimming and diving team generated a cumulative GPA of 3.96 (No. 3 in NISCA’s national rankings)—Sirois hasn’t had to wear his ‘caseworker’ cap all that much. “Swimmers are a lot like cross country runners, when you consider how demanding each sport is, along with the work ethic required to succeed in each,” says Sirois, whose HPHS boys squad, in February, captured the program’s second sectional championship in 40 years. “They’re okay with repetitiveness. They’re okay with delayed gratification. They’re disciplined and goal-centered, always going for faster times and willing to put in the time necessary to get better, even though a season might not start out so well for them. “Many of our kids,” the coach adds, “likely use that same approach in school.” A swimmer’s slow time in an early-season race, therefore, is akin to a low grade on that swimmer’s paper in early September. There’s time, plenty of time, to earn a spot atop an awards podium. And on an Academic All-American team.

American,” Delfini recalls. “It was very confusing for a child. I have had compassion for the outsider ever since.” The move to Italy was meant to be a permanent relocation, but with his father commuting for workweek stints at the Fiat plant in Turin, only rejoining the family on weekends. “That got old really fast,” he says. “So we moved back.” The family put down roots in LaGrange, where Mike later married his high school sweetheart Carol, and raised their three children. Delfini’s childhood and his parenting scheme for his own family was full of time outdoors, exploring the fields and woods and streams, “Punching holes in coffee cans to catch crawfish or tadpoles, climbing trees, building tree forts where we had to scavenge our own wood, unbend nails from construction sites, and figure out how to do it on our own. We were outside creating and exploring all the time.” He also absorbed his family’s cooking roots which go back to his great-grandfather and greatgrand-uncle. Brothers who owned a mill and pasta-making operation in the neighboring towns of Palena and Fara San Martino, Italy, the two had the foresight to bring their pasta brand, DeCecco, to Chicago for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, a move which established DeCecco as one of the leading pasta brands in the country. But Delfini learned the art of making fresh pasta from his grandmother and mother, preserving family culture and the Abruzzo sauces by making fresh pasta every Sunday for his family and their friends. Usually, it’s either gnocchi with a deeply flavored sauce made with tomato, onion and pork neckbones, or pasta guittara with an Abruzzo bolognese made from lamb, pork, beef and tomato. “I still have the guittara my grandfather made,” says Delfini, describing the zither-like pasta making contraption strung with wires that predated pasta machines. “You have to roll out the pasta dough, place it over the guittara, and then roll over the dough again. The wire cuts the pasta into individual noodles, which have square sides, rather than the round shape of spaghetti. Then, you pluck the strings to allow all of the noodles to drop down and separate.” While it’s unlikely Delfini will be teaching pasta making classes at the Kohl, the handson, creative exploration he enjoyed as a child, fostered in his own family, and supported at the Shedd Aquarium, will continue at Kohl. So will his facilitation and support of outreach to all cultural groups, the disenfranchised, and the underprivileged. “It’s so important to constantly remind children that they are important. That they have value. That they are smart. Because so many have to face a constant ambush of negatives. With Kohl, we not only want to build new pathways for positive growth and experience conceived by adults. We want to open the way to bring in ideas from the children themselves. Imagine what that could look like! The possibilities are endless.”

Just west of “Main Street,” the central corridor running through Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, sits Turtle Rock, home to four Southern Painted turtles. It’s a hot spot of activity, both for the turtles who warm themselves on rocks, and for the kids who press faces close and watch the turtles swim, doze, and skitter about. Currently, Turtle Rock is the only permanent exhibit at Kohl with living animals. But if Mike Delfini, Kohl’s new President and CEO, gets his heart’s desire, there will be more critters to come. “Children love to watch, learn, and interact with the real thing. And as a children’s museum, we have the incredible opportunity to give them all of that,” says Delfini. “We can be part science museum, history museum, art museum, and zoo—the only common denominator is children. Other museums struggle with more limited parameters: A science museum tries to be more zoo and gets pushback. A history museum tries to be more art and gets pushback. But a children’s museum can be anything.” Delfini comes to Kohl at the front end of a $15 million campaign to grow the museum’s leadership serving the Chicago area and the national children’s museum landscape. Kohl will be updating and expanding its buildings, exhibits, offerings, and access and inclusion programs. Among the exciting new plans, there will be a new Imaginarium with interactive elements for gross-motor play— enhancing the year-round connection to nature with an indoor/outdoor space that complements the museum’s two-acre Habitat Park. And Kohl’s already muscular efforts with pop-up museum exhibits it takes all over the country, will be enhanced with the addition of a new support wing. The wing will give exhibit technicians the ability to create new exhibits and to refurbish existing ones on site. It’s a threshold upon which Delfini is thrilled to be standing. Coming to Kohl after being part of the team that grew the Shedd Aquarium to include the Abbott Oceanarium, Delfini has spent his entire career shaping Chicago museums. At Shedd, Delfini was Vice President of Planning and Design, a role that continued to expand until he became Chief Operating Officer at the institution. But it all started for him at the Field Museum of Natural History. Graduating from the University of Illinois Chicago’s College of Art and Architecture, Delfini took his design degree and portfolio and made a beeline for the Field. “Yes,” he laughs. “All I ever wanted was to work at a museum. I just loved them.” Delfini came to the Field when it was under the directorship of Michael Spock, son of Dr. Benjamin Spock, famed pediatrician. Spock came from the Boston Children’s Museum and

brought a unique perspective to museum exhibits and experiences, says Delifini, which was very innovative for the Field, and made a big impression on him. “It was an amazing thing to be on the design team working on exhibits during that time— Ancient Egypt, Traveling the Pacific Northwest, and so many more,” he says. During the four years he worked at the Field, Delifini never left the museum campus for lunch. Instead, he went over to the Shedd where he’d sit on his favorite bench in front of the Caribbean Reef to eat, watch the sea animals swim by, decompress, and absorb the quiet, soothing mood of the dark, cool atmosphere. One day, eating lunch in his customary spot, Delfini saw signs posted, announcing the upcoming addition of the Oceanarium and the master plan to br ing beluga whales to Chicago. “I looked at those signs and I thought to myself, this sleepy little dark museum is about to wake up,” he recalls. So again, Delifni went knocking on the design director’s door with his portfolio, and again he was hired. But this time, he became part of a team of young, pas-

sionate professionals that would shape the Oceanarium and the Shedd into what they are today. Delfini stayed on for 27 years. Throughout the course of those decades, Delfini’s inherent skills at both planning and design matured. Combined, those skills form the base of design thinking—the process that now helps businesses worldwide embrace change and solve problems. It’s a mode of operation that helps organizations step away from “vague thoughts of what they think they need to do, to what they really need to do,” explains Delfini. “That process of shaping the right questions, answering them, and creating the right action plan to execute on the answers is something, as a creative, I’ve done all my life. It’s the way we are approaching what will soon happen at Kohl.” Delfini grew up on Chicago’s south side, one of four boys born to parents who immigrated here from the town of Palena, in Abruzzo, Italy. The family spoke the Palena dialect, as well as formal Italian, plus English. The Delfinis move back to Italy for Mike’s fifth and sixth grade years of school was a transition that was challenging for Mike. “In Chicago, I was called all of the racial slurs with which people labeled Italian immigrants. And then moving to Italy, I was labeled a dumb
