Loverboy Still Working For The Weekend
Glencoe Gives Vets A Hand … and a Bagel

“It starts in that moment when you walk on the stage while the lights are still down,” said Loverboy’s Paul Dean, who lives with his wife and 21-year-old son on the side of a mountain in north Vancouver, Canada. “You check the instruments and you make any necessary tweaks. It’s a time of intense focus. And once the lights go up and the crowd erupts, it’s a total escape. You can feel the energy of the crowd with every ounce of your being. There is just nothing like it.” It’s this energy that the members of Loverboy are anticipating when they take the stage at Ravinia Festival on June 3 with fellow pop icon Survivor. “Despite how many years we have been doing this, we are still all in,” said Dean. “We love the challenge of it. We are not just this band out there going through the motions and calling it in. We still love playing and singing every note and the fans can feel that. Some people get to a point where they don’t want to do it anymore, but we are a tad obsessed.” The roots of Loverboy were planted back in 1978, when Dean met with a friend by the name of Mike Reno in an old warehouse, hoping to give their collective musical dreams a try. “I remember that Mike came out screaming some high note and I wasn’t sure if this was my Continued on PG 10

Approximately 1,700 veterans marched on May 25 from Glencoe to Chicago to help raise awareness of veteran suicide – and Glencoe residents were ready with bagels,
coffee and fruit to help get the marchers started. Chicago Veterans started the “Ruck March” to raise awareness of a staggering statistic: 20 veterans are lost each day to suicide — a number that recently dropped from 22 per day. “Our goal is to bring awareness to the

While Chicago Veterans has been holding the Ruck March for five years, it wasn’t until last year that Glencoe resident Melissa Lee got involved. After seeing a long line of men and women in uniform at the Starbucks in downtown Glencoe, Lee asked what was going on. When she learned the veterans were in town for the Ruck March, Lee organized her fellow residents and friends to provide a breakfast for the veterans before they walked. “It is really just to say thank you for your service,” Lee said.

Highlights from the Ravinia Festival Established in 1904, Ravinia Festival is North America’s oldest internationally renowned music festival presenting more than 140 musically diverse events throughout the summer. that teaches her four children the value of giving back and to appreciate the service of veterans. “It is really moving and such an easy way to give back,” Lee said. The breakfast also provided a moment for volunteers to make a connection with veterans. And seeing the photos of loved ones on the veteran’s backpacks had a meaningful impact. Lee and other volunteers were surprised that so many of the veterans marching were young men and women. While providing breakfast may seem like a small gesture, it was not lost on the volunteers or participants of the march. Hernandez said instead of changing the start location from Glencoe when the suicide numbers dropped to 20, they shortened the walk at the other end because of Glencoe’s unwavering support. Lee believes that this small effort is an example of how anyone can get involved and be of service to others. “A community can come together to care and do something. Carrying on Lake Bluff ’s rich history as a destination for artists and art lovers, the nonprofit Artists on the Bluff will share its talent with the community at the Summer Arts Festival on the Lake Bluff Village Green June 16-17. “We’ll have a large body of work at the festival. It (serves) as more exposure for our local artists plus it is a community event the whole family can enjoy,” Beverly Behrens, publicity chair for Artists on the Bluff, told DailyNorthShore. The festival will include 24 booths, showcasing the work of 28 local artists. There will also be two food vendors, six live musical acts that perform throughout the day, and a children’s craft tent sponsored by the Lake Bluff Public Library. Most members of Artists on the Bluff spend the year gearing up for this big event. The membership comprises an eclectic group of artists — many mid-career — who draw from within a 100-mile radius of Lake Bluff. While the organization began nearly 20 years ago with about 12 to 15 members, it has seen a dramatic increase in membership over the past couple of years, now

boasting 78 members. The boost in membership is primarily due to the success of the group’s exhibit space at The Gallery in Lake Forest, which opened two years ago. “Everyone is excited to have an opportunity to show their art,” Behrens said.
The gallery space has attracted new members, and in the past year, expanded from a hallway of the restaurant into a separate room where diners frequently visit while waiting for a table. The exhibit changes monthly with a new theme that ties together a variety of mediums. It’s not uncommon to see a wide range of artwork from
jewelry and fiber arts to oil and watercolor paintings. “It’s quite a broad spectrum,” Behrens said. This month’s exhibit, “Bloom”, opened on May 10, just in time for spring flowers. The exhibit includes a variety of artwork, such as Liz Jensen’s fiber arts and Bob London’s photographs. In addition to The Gallery exhibits, Artists on the Bluff also meets monthly at the Lake Bluff Park District. The meetings include informative arts-related presentations by accomplished professional artists from inside and outside the organization. “It’s really very exciting. There is always something different,” Behrens said. The presentations frequently include an art demonstration on different mediums, such as print making or how to make a hat, Behrens said. Starting this June, Artists on the Bluff will host a tent at the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market. Lee originally created the science experiment with a fellow student, Tommy Enrietto, who wasn’t able to attend the science fair The experiment involved filling three glass beakers half way with light corn syrup, vegetable oil and baby oil, and then dipping a glass rod into each beaker, Lee said. Lee was exploring which liquid would allow a glass rod to appear invisible due to light refraction angles of the glass and liquids. He hypothesized that the liquid with the closest index of refraction to the glass beaker could make the glass rod appear invisible, and he was proven correct. The beaker with vegetable oil made the glass rod appear nearly invisible, after 10 girls and 10 boys viewed the experiment. Lee said he has always been interested in invisibility — having seen plenty of special effects in movies — and wanted to simulate invisibility in real life. They also spent a lot of time choosing the appropriate liquids, going through about 10 different liquids before settling on vegetable oil, baby oil and corn syrup. Going to a large science fair was a new challenge for Lee. “It was kind of intimidating when you see the magnitude of it,” he said. The fair had rows and rows of tables where students set up their science projects. This project was a first for him as well — Lee had never actually participated in a science fair before — and he spent a lot of time preparing. Lee carefully created an eye-popping board, as well as a speech that he would have to give to the judges who visited his table. After going over his research fastidiously, and reading his speech repeatedly to his mom, Lee was able to answer all of the judges’ questions. While the experience was challenging, overall Lee found it to be fun and rewarding. “I like researching topics and really going in-depth on a

certain topic and not rushing through,” he said. Lee also enjoyed completing an experiment where he had the opportunity to test his hypothesis and observe the results like a real scientist. Lee has always loved science and math, and he is particularly interested in physics. “I’ve always liked science, it has always intrigued me. I like math as well and how they are tied together,” he said. While he doesn’t have any ideas yet for another science project, Lee is already thinking about competing at fairs in high school, where he can continue to explore his interest in science. “I love physics and how it affects everything in our life,” Lee said.

That legacy and layered history is part of what made me write Gateway to the Moon.” The author of three travel memoirs, Morris says she’s nurtured by her adventures abroad, perhaps a byproduct of her mother’s passion for all things French.“My mother was a Highland Park housewife who loved France so much, she named our first dog Renoir,” said Morris, who is fluent in both French and Spanish. She’ll soon embark on a family trip to Italy before gearing up for her next book, set in Jamaica. “Since I left Highland Park, I’ve been on a journey,” she said. “A lot of my work is about the tension between home and away.”

Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken Builds New Roost BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken is building a brandnew restaurant space and will relocate to downtown Highwood from its current location across from Fort Sheridan in July. Rather than update his current space at 760 Sheridan Road that has been home to Clucker’s since 2008, owner Reed Merdinger is excited to start anew on the site that previously housed Red Lantern, and before that, Shrimp Walk. “The facility itself is completely new except for the four walls and the roof,” said Merdinger. “This restaurant is more contemporary. The doors open to the street and it has a larger outdoor café.” The Highland Park resident explained that the front of the restaurant has been remodeled with a pristine terra cotta 1935 Art Deco look. He has pictures of the original 1935 restaurant, Rainbow Tavern, from the Highwood Historical Society and said the façade is exactly the same as it is today. The new Clucker’s will have an addition in the back with an exhibit kitchen to get a birds-eye view of the chef in action. Merdinger is also excited about incorporating the “Shou-Sugi-Ban,” Japanese process for burning wood. “This process preserves the wood and gives it an unbelievable texture and color,” he said. “The material is coming from Japan and will be used on the interior and exterior of the new Clucker’s.” He added that the new restaurant will have an exposed brick and exposed beam ceiling with orbs that has an industrial look to it. Though the look has changed, the menu will be almost identical. Clucker’s is now featuring ribs on weekends, which Merdinger said will likely move to full-time. It will be the same fast-casual service where you order at the counter and a server brings the food to your table. Merdinger told DailyNorthShore how he hatched a plan to open a chicken joint. It all began on their honeymoon in Mexico City, when he and his wife went to a restaurant called El Pollo Loco. “We saw the concept of this big grill with all of the chickens on it and I fell in love with the idea,” he said. “I always thought chicken was healthy and filled with protein and the process of cooking it with a light charcoal imparts an incredible flavor to it.” In 1985 Merdinger was working for Don Roth’s Blackhawk Restaurant when he put the concept together and opened Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken at 2350 N. Clark Street in Chicago. “That’s where we came up with the popular 2350 Salad at Clucker’s in Highwood,” said Merdinger. The 2350 Salad is made with grilled chicken, bacon, chopped egg, avocado, scallions, Swiss cheese, mixed greens and poppy seed dressing. More clucking about specialties later. Soon Merdinger opened another Clucker’s in Wheeling and ran two restaurants, before something unimaginable happened. “In 1998, I went to bed and woke up paralyzed,” said Merdinger. “My disc imploded to my spine,

and I was paralyzed from the chest down for about three years.” Merdinger explained that he played rugby and baseball in college and believes that the injuries he suffered led to his diagnosis of spinal stenosis. “I’m not in pain and my family has been a great support to me,” he said. He still uses a walker, but has never let his disability slow him down. In 2008, Merdinger decided to open shop closer to home in Highwood and in 2015, Clucker’s opened another restaurant in Libertyville run by Deb Merdinger, his wife and business partner. “We both pull into the garage every night at 10 p.m.,” said Merdinger. The couple has been married for 37 years and has two married children, son Rex and daughter A.J., and one grandchild. Merdinger added that his kids are too smart to join the family business, but they all enjoy dining at Clucker’s. Some of Clucker’s specialties include the crispy, lemony brick chicken, which is served after 5 p.m., the chicken enchiladas, chicken kabobs and the rotisserie chicken. “The brick chicken sells out every night and we sold 7,500 wings on Super Bowl Sunday, which is our busiest day of the year,” he said. For those who flock to meat, in addition to ribs, Clucker’s serves hamburgers, brisket and steak sandwiches. All of its soups, salads, sauces and dressings are

made from scratch, as well as the homemade chips, garlic smashed reds, red beans and rice and grilled vegetables. Clucker’s also offers a complete catering menu. Merdinger finds working with the employees and visiting with the customers very rewarding. Most of his staff has been at the Highwood location since Clucker’s first opened about 10 and a half years ago. Daniel Mora is the chef and Marta Menenes and Leo Hernandez are co-managers. “To find people that enjoy your food and employees that are loyal to you is so worthwhile,” said Merdinger. “We support a lot of families here.” Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken is currently located at 760 Sheridan Road in Highwood and will be flying the coop to 405 Sheridan Road in mid to late July.

Merdinger’s first Clucker’s mobile was a Smart Car, but it was too small to handle all of the business, so he found a man in Wisconsin who could put the chicken heads on small delivery trucks. Chen music Understated New Trier senior makes some noise — via a few celebratory outbursts — and takes third in singles at the state tennis tournament BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
It was the roar heard round Arlington Heights last spring. And it was belted by none other than Jeffrey Chen — a quiet, unassuming, respectful tennis player from New Trier — after a singles victory in a quarterfinal at the 2017 Class 2A state meet. Chen had just defeated a higher seed, Glenbrook North’s Nick Marino, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 when he opened wide and turned into a racket-wielding lion on a Hersey High School court, some 27 miles north of Brookfield Zoo. “I’ll remember that moment for a while,” New Trier junior Brent Saltzman said at last weekend’s Class 2A state tennis meet. “Jeffrey clenched a fist and then yelled. I mean, really yelled. No one expected that to come out of his mouth. “That was such a great moment to witness, seeing him get excited like that,” half of the Trevians’ No. 3 doubles team added. Chen, then a junior, ended up fourth at state. The tri-captain — seeded 5-8 once again in singles — ended his decorated tennis career with another state medal and with a few more celebratory eruptions last weekend, topping Stevenson junior Zachary Kim 6-2, 6-2 in the match for third place at Hersey in sunny, steamy Arlington Heights May 26. Two years ago, as a sophomore at state, he teamed up with then-senior Michal Kusznerko to place fifth in doubles for the state champions. New Trier teams featuring Chen placed third, first, second and second at state from 2015-18. “Such an exemplary leader on the court,” Trevians coach Tad Eckert said of the Brandeis (Massachusetts) University-bound Chen. “He, along with our other captains (seniors Reed Bianucci and Peter Leutz), showed the young guys so much, motivated our young guys. “Our younger guys this weekend wanted to do well for our captains.” Captain Chen almost didn’t survive his thirdround match against Highland Park junior Jeremy Learner last weekend, after falling behind 6-2, 3-1 May 24. Chen needed an assist in mid-match, and the impressive shotmaker got one — from NT assistant coach Kevin Andersen. “Good coaching,” Chen said a couple of days after his 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. “He told me to keep the ball in play, to settle down, to play my game. “Weathered that storm,” he added with a look of relief. Chen, Andersen noted, looked way too tight at the outset against the Giant, missing shots he normally whacks for winners. “Jeffrey loosened up, got steadier and ended up wearing Jeremy down,” Andersen said. “He then played a good, smart, considerably cleaner match in the next round [against senior and reining state runner-up Danilo Kovacevic of Maine South],

Zipoli/Drier beat Lake Forest High School’s Yusef Alsikafi/Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-0 in the match for fifth place May 26. “Jake and Dylan had many moments of truth this weekend,” Eckert said. “They did such a good job, coming up big for us.” Bengtsson went 5-2 at his first state tournament, edging a senior, 3-4 seed Alan Arocho of Loyola Academy, 3-6, 6-2 (12-10) in a consolation quarterfinal en route to a top-eight singles finish. “Max played so well this year when he had to face an opponent a second time,” Eckert said. “He made the adjustments he had to make the second time around — rare, that’s rare for a freshman.” Tri-captains Jeffrey Chen, Reed Bianucci and Peter Leutz battled in NT togs for the last time last weekend. “They’ll definitely be missed, all of them,” Eckert said. “You know what? A soccer ball soars above and behind New Trier senior right back Caroline Iserloth in a match. She had misjudged the ball’s flight, a rare mistake for the 5-foot-7 backline staple. She hustles back, recovers. Then she shoots a resolute look at Trevians coach Jim Burnside. “Next time!” Iserloth shouts. “I’ll get it next time!”

Teams don’t expect a defender to attack the way Caroline does. She’s fast and quick and smart, with great skills.” The sister of former New Trier varsity golfer Nicholas Iserloth (Vanderbilt University) and Matt “Barr” Iserloth (Carleton College) liked the idea, as an eighth-grader, of someday playing Division I soccer. She entered high school and helped NT capture a third straight 3A state championship in 2016, scoring a goal in NT’s 4-0 defeat of Collinsville in the state title match. Her priorities changed as she took harder classes, though her love for soccer did not, especially whenever she played alongside her formidable backline mates in NT contests. “I love my teammates on defense,” said Iserloth, interested in majoring in business at Wisconsin. “Their energy is always high. If there’s yelling, if there’s some confusion about covering a player, we always end up getting together and communicating, making sure we correct whatever has to be corrected. “In the end, we have each other’s back.” One of Iserloth’s biggest supporters is her mother, Melissa, an avid tennis player. “She’s at every game,” the daughter said. “She motivates me.” Iserloth has also drawn inspiration from her favorite TV character, Dr. Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy. Grey, in a way or two, is Iserloth in scrubs. “Meredith Grey,” Iserloth said, “is driven, knows what she wants, owns it. She has high expectations for herself. Everybody loves her and respects her.”
Burnside recounted the telling regular-season sequence after his Trevians had edged Loyola Academy’s Ramblers 2-1 in the Class 3A Glenbrook South Sectional final May 25. “I think so highly of Caroline,” the coach said of the fourth-year varsity member and third-year starter. “Determined, such a determined player. She plays with a great attitude, with an edge, and she reads the game well, makes great decisions. I love Caroline’s knowledge of the game. “Great kid, the type of person you want to be around, a kid who supports her teammates at all

The huge fan of Grey’s Anatomy has a game that’s … surgical. Her passes in transition are right-on, and her headers are precise, always landing near the feet of her targets. The thought of popping to head a 50-50 ball made Iserloth cringe years ago. “It’s never been my favorite thing to do in soccer,” admits Iserloth, who will likely play club soccer at the University of Wisconsin. “But I knew I had to at least become comfortable with it.” Loyola Academy (19-2-4) struck first in the sectional championship match last weekend, with senior midfielder Cate Shellenback heading a gorgeous cross from junior midfielder Sammie Holton with 31:47 left in the second half.

NT, behind in a match? That’s rare — teenwithout-a-cellphone rare. An uncomfortable feeling, New Trier? Hardly. NT senior midfielder/forward Nicole Kaspi answered with the first of her two goals a little more than 90 seconds later. Trevians senior forward Nicole Basil had initiated the attack with a steal near midfield. “We bounced back because our energy never
dropped after that goal,” Iserloth said. “We’re always talking about the five minutes at the start of each half and the five minutes after a goal. Those are big minutes, important minutes.” New Trier (22-0-2) was scheduled to face Carmel Catholic (16-4-1) in the Class 3A Evanston Supersectional May 29. Nassar, a righty, praised NT trainer Jordan Anderson for providing her with a protective cast that covered most of her right hand and forearm. “Maybe I’ll become ambidextrous because of this injury,” Nassar cracked. Nassar will either play club soccer or try to make it as a women’s soccer team walk-on at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, while double majoring in finance and pre-med. Going, going ... Gough Senior standout comes up with a big moment in Scouts’ regional final loss to Blue Devils BY KEVIN REITERMAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
Andrew Gough has played a ton of baseball over the years. So he pretty much knew the ball was going out the second he hit it. But he wasn’t going to stand in the batter’s box and admire his long drive. He wasn’t going to turn and face the other team’s dugout — and scream, See that! No, that’s just not Andrew Gough. But, for the record, the Lake Forest High School senior did milk it for all it was worth. He savored the moment. Had fun with it. First, Gough pointed his “finger to the sky” — and kept it there. And, he wasn’t exactly Speedy Gonzalez — or, Mario Andretti — circling the bases. Relish the occasion. Why not? Gough’s clutch home run — his second of the season — over the left-field fence in the top of the sixth inning was enormous. It gave the 13th-seeded Scouts a 3-2 lead over Warren in the Class 4A regional championship game at Glenbrook North on May 26. “I didn’t even look up after I hit it … just pointed my finger to the sky,” said Gough, an all-North Suburban Conference second baseman. “I knew it was gone.” But the celebration, as it turned out, was shortlived. The Blue Devils, seeded No. 6, tallied one run in the seventh and added another run in the eighth to claim a 4-3 victory to oust the Scouts from postseason play. Gough, who will take his game to Middlebury College next fall, plans to major in philosophy. Maybe he’ll pick up a minor in psychology — especially after this gut-wrenching loss. “I really didn’t think we were going to end up losing,” said Gough, who hit cleanup for the Scouts (19-14-1). “Not even for a moment.” As a three-year varsity starter, Gough had his share of big moments. But none bigger than that Big Smack against Warren’s Riley Kocen. Gough, who was 0-for-2 (two fly outs} against the Blue Devils right-hander, strolled to the plate as the cagey veteran in the sixth inning. Like a poker player, Gough detected a tell from Kocen. “After he missed with a fastball outside, I figured that he’d try to mix it up,” said Gough, who teamed with Kocen in club baseball (Slammers). “Typically, he’s not going to give me another fastball right there,” Gough added. “I saw him digging into his mitt —like he was going to throw a curve.” He guessed right. Gough’s picturesque swing did the rest. “Andrew has done a good job in the four hole,” said Lake Forest head coach Ray Del Fava. “He’s worked hard to increase his power.” After a slow start, Gough ended the season hitting .320 with 19 runs, 20 RBIs and nine extra base hits. His on-base percentage was .409. His OPS was

.859. What didn’t go as planned for Gough this spring was … Gough, the Pitcher. A key hurler during his sophomore season, the right-hander had big plans entering the 2018 campaign. “I was supposed to be our No. 1,” said Gough. “I worked real hard on my pitching in the offseason.” But that went by the wayside, when he sustained a shoulder injury in his second outing of the season. “I couldn’t throw a ball for two weeks,” said Gough. “Had to be the DH [designated hitter] for a while.” Fortunately for the Scouts, who went 16-3-1 in their last 20 games of the season, there were quality pitchers ready to rock and roll, including junior Peter Turelli (2-3, 1.87) and sophomores Michael Vallone (4-1, 1.28), Connor Morrison (3-2, 3.26) and Breck Nowik (3-0, 2.10). “We had a junior and three sophomores who
really stepped up and filled the void,” said Gough. “I trusted them. All of them did amazing jobs. “And that’s what I loved about this team,” he added. “The seniors looked at the juniors and sophomores as equals. The chemistry on this team was great .” Once his arm came back, Gough focused on hitting cleanup and playing second base full time. The keystone combination of Gough and senior all-conference shortstop Caleb Durbin, who also hit a solo home run in the regional final, was top notch. “For a coach, it was very comforting knowing that you had Andrew and Caleb out there,” said Del Fava. “A pretty good double-play combination. “Both of those guys gave it their all,” the coach added. “They left everything on the field. We will be okay with pitching next year. We’ve got a lot of depth there. But replacing guys like Andrew, Caleb and Drew [Golde] will be a problem.”

Turning to his right and not seeing Durbin will be an adjustment for Gough. The Philosophical Gough thought about that for a second — as he ended a postgame interview. Hmm, no Durbin. “It’s pretty disappointing to think that I will never play [on the same diamond] with Caleb again,” he said. Notable: The Scouts advanced to the regional title game after a 11-1 quarterfinal win over Waukegan on May 21 and a thrilling 3-2 semifinal victory over Glenbrook North on May 23 (see online story at DailyNorthShore.com). I meet Darren Anixter at Little Louie’s in Northbrook. It’s 11 a.m. on a Sunday in April, too late for breakfast but not too early for lunch. The 46-year-old from Highland Park could easily pass for a 5-foot-7, 170-pound version of New York Yankees great Derek Jeter, a threat to become the first-ever unanimous Baseball Hall of Fame inductee in two years. But the topic of the day will be basketball — specifically the 11th Annual Brian P. Schwartz (BPS) Basketball Tournament at Camp Ojibwa in Eagle River, Wisconsin, June 7-10. “I’m hoping to lose five pounds before
heading up there,” s a y s A n i x t e r, after ordering a skirt steak pita, a small cup of chili and a large Diet Coke at Little Louie’s, which is owned by Anixter’s longtime f r i e n d Pe t e Weiss. “I might not score a point all weekend, because I’m a pass-first point guard,” the 1990 Highland Park High School graduate adds. “But you know what? The guys I guard won’t score a point.” Anixter, a former Camp Ojibwa camper and counselor, is the founder and commissioner of the BPS League at Ojibwa. A tragedy in 2007 led to its formation. Schwartz, one of Anixter’s

good friends, died from a heart attack at the age of 37 while playing basketball on a court in Highland Park. “ ‘Schwartzy’ was helping me out, serving as an assistant commissioner of a league I was organizing for guys, good guys, to get together at Ojibwa on the weekend before Father’s Day,” Anixter says. “After he died, we named the tournament — the trip, really, since we do more than play basketball during the four days up there — in his honor. Great friend, incredible human being. ‘Schwartzy’ was a big guy, a huge hugger. His smile … I’ll never forget that; nobody will. Brian was always in a good mood. I was a freshman at Highland Park High School when he was a senior. “Brian,” he adds, “looked out for me.” A lefty with a b u m r i g h t rotator cuff and a survivor of two knee surgeries, Anixter can’t wait to battle with his America’s Team cagers next weekend. Nearly 200 men attended the event last summer. The oldest registered hoopster this year is 58, the youngest 22. Entry fee is $400. The trip also includes softbal l and golf divisions.
After the inaugural BPS Tournament, the league donated money toward the construction of Little League dugouts at Sunset Woods Park in Highland Park; in ensuing years, a portion of the fees was earmarked for Camp Ojibwa scholarships. “What goes on up there every year is amazing, pretty special,” Anixter says. “It is intense basketball for four straight days, six guys on each team, guys competing hard, beating each other up. But we hang out as best friends after each game, bonding and experiencing brotherhood.” Anixter, a threespor t

He works for A-Z Industries, a wire and cable company founded by his father, Jim Anixter, also known as The Pink Hat Guy. TV viewers of Chicago Cubs home games have seen Jim and his hat in a plum seat behind home plate. Jim hands out pink baseball hats to fans at Wrigley Field, as long as each promises to donate at least $25 to the American Cancer Society. “My dad has been passionate about the Cubs for decades,” Darren Anixter says. “I’m passionate, too, about a lot of things, not just Camp Ojibwa. I love playing basketball, running a hoops league [at Highwood Recreation Center] working out, doing yoga.” Anixter’s wife, Michelle, grew up in Indiana. Each of their sons — Evan, 20, Grant, 19, and Austin, 17 — attended Camp Ojibwa and later served as a camp counselor. Evan and Grant are University of Texas students. Michelle, like her husband and sons, has a deep love for Camp Ojibwa. “My wife, a full-fledged Hoosier, is Mary Poppins,” says Anixter, a Camp Ojibwa board member and mentee of longtime Camp Ojibwa Director Denny Rosen. “Michelle is an incredible human being, a great mom, and she supports my nonsense. When I’m around my three sons I’m the cool dad, but I’m also the fourth kid.” The fourth kid’s all-time record against Evan Anixter in one-one-on hoops games atop the Anixter driveway is 99-2, Darren Anixter figures. “But I’m 0-2 against him in our last two games,” the dad admits.
