St. Patrick’s Day may be over but one of Ireland’s most famous contemporary writers will be in town this week for Lake Forest College’s annual literary festival. Roddy Doyle, award-winning author of The Commitments and The Snapper (both made into popular films in the early 1990s), is one of several writers, artists, and filmmakers to participate in the free event, which runs from March 25 through March 29. E’mon Lauren, Chicago’s first Youth Poet Laureate, kicks off the evening at 4 p.m. with a reading in the Lillard Science Center. A 2016 finalist for The Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award, her first chapbook, Commando, was published by Haymarket Books in fall 2017. Doyle—author of 11 novels for adults, eight books for children, seven plays and screenplays, and dozens of short stories—is scheduled to read at 7 p.m. in Lillard’s McCormick Auditorium. A play based on his 2012 book, Two Pints, is currently running at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Continued on PG 14

Ilya Mondrowski had to pick a famous person and sketch him or her. That was the assignment last year for his art class at Edgewood Middle School in Highland Park. Mondrowski, an eighth-grader then, did not need much time to come up with a famous person. He and his family had recently visited the Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis. Last name unnecessary. Mondrowski chose Elvis. A pencil-wielding Mondrowski sketched Elvis, using a photo of the late, iconic singer as a guide. He turned it in late. A week late, to be exact. “I didn’t want to turn it in when it was due,” Mondrowski, now a Highland Park High School freshman, explains. “The sweater Elvis was wearing in the photo was hard to draw. It had a lot of details. “I needed more time to get it right.” The perfectionist in Mondrowski refused to settle for something very good. Perfectionists never, ever accept “very good” when “excellent” is attainable. Mondrowski received an A-minus for his artwork—the minus added due to its tardiness, and only its tardiness. Mondrowski, 14, pays attention to details on ice, too. He and his 12-year-old pairs partner, Bolingbrook resident Kiana Pan, showed up on time on January 20 and aced the major test—the free dance segment in the Juvenile Ice Dance division—at the United States Figure Skating (USFS) National Championships in Detroit. In fifth place against 11 other pairs after the first segment (waltz) and in second place after topping the field in the second segment (tango), Mondrowski-Pan put on quite a show in the free dance, wowing and bedazzling the judges and the spectators and the NBC Sports webcast viewers back home. The pair captured gold—by two points. A two-point margin in ice dancing? That’s a wide one, a 28-point victory in football, an 80-60 triumph in basketball.

NEWS DANDY DEBUTS Continued from PG 1 Mondrowski unwrapped his competitive ice dancing career only a year ago, give or take a day or two of practicing dance lifts under the direction of coach Eve Chalom at Centennial Ice Rink in Wilmette and other venues. The 5-foot-5, 115pound Mondrowski and Pan collected their first medals, bronze, at their first competition last fall. The duo then bronzed again in November at the Midwestern Sectional Figure Skating Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana, earning a Juvenile division national berth in Detroit. Three competitions, three medals. Not a bad rookie year. Pan is the exuberant, bubbly partner. Mondrowski’s on-ice personality is serious, somewhat introverted. But the mix of divergent miens works. “Ilya is fluid; Kiana is excitable,” Ilya’s mother, Leslie Wagner, says. “And they look good together. People have told us how much they like the way the two move together when they perform.” Ilya claims ice dancing is 60 percent athleticism, 40 percent performance. Ilya’s father notes Ilya’s “soft knees” make his knee bends and landings in ice-dance segments look smooth and effortless. Mondrowski’s perfectionism serves as his fuel in figure skating and in ice dancing. “You tell him something in a training session, anything, and he’ll work on it and work on it some more until he gets it right,” says Anita Nebel, in her fourth year as Mondrowski’s freestyle skating

coach. “You have to have the drive and the determination to get better in this discipline, and Ilya has those qualities, definitely. “What he did in Detroit, with his partner and against the nation’s best, was huge, very impressive,” she adds. “What an accomplishment.” Mondrowski’s skate blades hit ice for the first time at Centennial Ice Arena in Highland Park. He was 4. “My wife Wagner and I both skated recreationally in Chicago when we were young,” Steve Mondrowski says. “We told our son, ‘We skated; you skate.’ Ilya picked it up quickly. He was a natural on the ice, always very, very comfortable on the ice.” Ilya Mondrowski competed against other figure skaters for the first time at the age of 8. Centennial Ice Arena hosted the competition. He left the facility a tad heavier, a silver medal dangling near his chest. Years later ice dancing caught his fancy at the same rink. He began practicing with a local girl.

Hockey? The young man does that, too. Successfully, too, since picking up a stick and moving a puck for the first time as a first-grader. Mondrowski, who plays travel hockey for the Winnetka Warriors, once scored six goals—six!—in a game. Double hatty. The forward and his HPHS JV Grey teammates captured a conference championship in Rolling Meadows on February 28. His all-time favorite professional hockey players, in alphabetical order: former Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk, current Chicago Blackhawks right winger Patrick Kane. In a typical week in the wintertime, Mondrowski skates four days (practices and games) as a hockey player and the other three as a figure skater/ ice dancer. On the weekends that he takes ice dancing lessons at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, a 75-minute drive from his home in Highland Park. He makes time for weight-training. He somehow also shoehorns two private freestyle skating lessons with Nebel at Centennial Ice Arena—during his HPHS lunch hour. “Busy kid,” his mother understates, adding Ilya is an honor student, plays the violin for the school orchestra, golfs and builds stuff (including outdoor furniture) in his spare time, and makes a Shamrock milkshake that tastes better than that green concoction at McDonald’s does. “If his grades are not where they should be, we’ve told him he’d have to drop something. He hasn’t had to drop anything. “Ilya,” Wagner adds, “manages his time well.” “It amazes me,” Steve Mondrowski says, “how well he juggles his commitments.”

Success by 6 United Way of Lake County’s kindergarten readiness program delivers measurable, impressive results BY ELAINE DOREMUS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Twelve years ago, a baseline assessment showed that only 6 percent of the children in Waukegan Public Schools had the skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. Today, based on the same assessment, the percentage of Waukegan children arriving at kindergarten ready to succeed in school has increased from 6 to 57 percent. Impressive and measurable results—thanks in large part to the United Way of Lake County’s Success by 6 program. The nonprofit has conducted a Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, during the first four to six weeks of school, every three years in Waukegan since 2006. Success By 6 develops and invests in early learning programs that empower families and ensure children are ready for the future. “We are proud of the measureable impact we are making in Waukegan to improve kindergarten readiness, in partnership with key community stakeholders,” says Success By 6 Program Manager Rosa Herrera for UWLC. “From Waukegan School District 60 to the Waukegan Public Library to area day care centers, our collective efforts are increasing social support, empowering parents, strengthening services, and assisting in developing future programming to improve the quality of life in the community. Together we are investing in early learning and literacy programs to make sure children are starting school ready to succeed.” Success by 6’s comprehensive programming includes Early Learning Clubs providing free

workshops, tips and materials to empower parents to be their child’s first teacher; Home Visiting delivering early learning and health literacy intervention services to the homes of high-risk children; Kindergarten Countdown Camp offering special camps for children who have never Nancy Coolley been to preschool to boost their skills over the summer; Kindergarten Readiness Calendars inspiring parents as they teach their preschool-age children; Early Learning Trails developing academic readiness while encouraging active movement and play; and Better Together engaging North Chicago families with children birth to three years old to build early literacy and learning skills. UWLC’s Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated community members and professionals from diverse industries across Lake County (including the North Shore) who give of their time and talent to support the agency’s important work. “The first year of the Success by 6 program, I participated in the testing of children entering kindergarten and the experience was shocking,” says Nancy Coolley of Lake Forest, a current UWLC general board and executive board member, and a member of the United Way of Illinois Board, who has been involved with United Way Lake

County since 2002 when she retired from Hewitt Associates. “There were only a few of these young children who had experience with books, who knew the alphabet and their colors. Knowing that more children are now coming in to kindergarten knowing basic skills, so they have a fair chance to learn, is rewarding.” Coolley adds that, when the program was researched, studied, planned, and launched, it was key that United Way could track progress and have measurable results with testing. “It has always shown that we were investing in a worthy program one that is changing the lives of young children and their families,” she says. Irene Hrusovsky, also of Lake Forest, first became involved with UWLC when she was an employee of Abbott Laboratories, contributing to their Annual Giving Campaign. Now retired, she serves on the board as well as Women United, a women’s leadership group affiliated with UWLC. “I strongly believe in UWLC’s focus on early childhood education and also recognize their substantial community support for families,” Hrusovsky says. “I recently had the privilege of first-hand experience with the 2018 assessments as a volunteer at one of the schools in Waukegan. “The children are inspiring. I loved their enthusiasm for learning and reading books and was impressed with their competence that shows promise for their school success. It is very rewarding to contribute to an organization focused on early childhood education and making a difference.” For more than 80 years, UWLC has been preparing children to thrive in school is the best way to disrupt the cycle of poverty—engaging in activities that ensure children are ready for their first day of

Master of Mayhem North Shore native David Hagerty has built a thriving crime novel career off the fictional intersection of Chicago politics and grisly murders BY DAVID RUTTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

David Hagerty’s professional writing life has been series of forgotten dreams. But he always awakens to rediscover the right path just in time to take it. That’s one reason Hagerty, 50, is coming back to Chicago for the March 23 full-day Murder and Mayhem conference at Roosevelt University. Some of Chicago’s eminent mystery and crime writers will gather to share their agony, glory, and expertise with fans. Hagerty is the most thoroughly complete “Chicago mystery writer” around these days, though he’s not actually from Chicago. Hagerty grew up in Winnetka and Kenilworth, and graduated from New Trier High in 1986. His three published novels all feature infamous, unsolved Chicago murders wrapped inside the life of politician protagonist Duncan Cochrane whom he created. The fourth in the series arrives this spring. Hagerty insists there is nothing autobiographical about Duncan Cochrane (“except we both like Scotch”) and even less historical truth in the interwoven plots, except the underlying crime happened as he describes. As with all noir fiction, his characters start out the book as a mess, and fall into a deeper hole. But he remains affixed to his roots. The titles of all four novels are based on the less-remembered lines from Carl Sandburg’s poem “Chicago.” The first three Evolve Publishing imprints are They Tell Me You Are Wicked (based on the 1966 Kenilworth murder of Sen. Charles Percy’s daughter), They Tell Me You Are Crooked (Mayor Jane Byrne moves into Cabrini Green housing project to confront a rash of sniper slayings that ends after her arrival), and They Tell Me You Are Brutal (The 1982 Tylenol poisoner in Chicago who killed seven). They are perfect grist for murder mystery novelists because there were suspects, but no arrests. No resolution other than the one the novelist ponders. The fourth in the series is projected to be They Tell Me You Are Cunning, inspired by the Innocence

says. “I found a lot of young men who had potential. So I became interested in what could be done that leads them to a better road.” Since teaching himself novel writing, he’s discovered what he misunderstood about the process. “Whenever someone asks me how to be a novelist, I tell them to spend an hour every day, and write 500 words. Every day, even when you’re on vacation,” he says. “I thought writing was about talent. I’m finding out it’s about butt-in-seat. You have to work at it.” Nothing important is easy, he says. “I slog through the first draft. That’s the hardest part for me. I figure if the first draft is done, and I die tomorrow, someone could look at it and say, ‘It sucks, but I see where he was going with this.’ The first draft takes about six months.” Today, Hagerty lives 35 miles east of San Francisco in Martinez, California, with his wife, Diane, who teaches elementary students in Benicia. “I’m a recovering exercise junkie,” he tells fans. “I was on crew in college; in my 20s, I was a bike racer; in my 30s, I was a cross-country ski racer. In my 40s, I’m either a has-been or a never-was—I’m trying to decide.” With three books in print and a fourth coming, you might think he is making a killing off unsolved Chicago murders. “No, it’s still a side-hustle,” he says without rancor. But that could change with one movie option. It’s a path. Hagerty has always been good with finding paths forward.

I love sports. I also love athletes’ names, especially if the surname of one has a connection to the athlete’s sport. Art and cancer. Cancer and art. The two have had a connection in the life of Caren Helene Rudman since she stared at a blank canvas in her art studio at home, and it stared back at her. On that stormy day some 15 years ago, before her first stroke of the paintbrush, Rudman received a phone call. The caller was her mother Susan Guthmann’s oncologist. The news: Rudman had tested positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation. Five of Rudman’s great-aunts had died of cancer. Five. Five too many. A great-grandmother had died of cancer. Her sister Lori Loeb would die of cancer in 2013, at the age of 54. Her mother would die of cancer two years later. Rudman returned to the blank canvas immediately after the phone call and made it come

alive. For 75 uninterrupted minutes in her Highland Park home, with music blaring and teardrops streaming, the self-taught painter created a painting she would name “The Storm” on a day when a microburst hit the area. It also was the day that Rudman, now the curator at The Art Center (TAC) Highland Park, took her first step on a figurative bridge— between health and disease. Surgeries would follow for the mother of four and the wife of puppeteer David Rudman, portrayer of Cookie Monster on Sesame Street and a co-founder (with brother Adam) of the children’s television production studio Spiffy Pictures. “I am an artist and a curator with a mission to create meaningful work that explores both the fragility and strength of body and mind,” Rudman, 54, writes on her website, carenhelenerudman.com. “I believe art has the ability to heal, to bring people together, and to communicate.”

In 2010 she curated and participated in the TAC exhibition “Voices and Visions; Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease.” Artwork submitted in the first three years expressed the concerns about breast and ovarian cancers. Voices and Visions—“My baby,” Rudman says—then became a biennial event and expanded to include any cancer as metaphor. TAC, a nonprofit, provides visual arts education to Highland Park and its surrounding communities, assuring access to the arts for all ages and cultural interests. It is dedicated to education in the contemporary visual arts through classes, outreach programs, gallery exhibitions, and events. “Making Art Available” is TAC’s simple, vital mission. “I can’t believe I have my dream job,” Rudman, a freelance curator at TAC for seven years before landing the full-time post last year, says at a table at That French Guy Patisserie & Café in Highland Park. “What I’m doing at The Art Center, what I get to do, it’s a dream. And I never thought I’d be a visual artist. At a young age I didn’t think I could draw, and I didn’t take my first photography class until I was 22. People told me, ‘You’re good at writing; you should pursue that.’ But I was drawn to drawing and painting, to photography. I told those people, ‘No, no, I want to pursue a career in the visual arts.’ “Do what you love to do,” she adds, having ordered latte and French-style scrambled eggs. “We should all be lucky to be able to do that, right?” Too shy to act in theater productions at Highland Park High School, Rudman danced instead. She majored in philosophy and minored in psychology and French at the University of Colorado Boulder, before earning a master’s of arts in 1992 at New York University (International Center of Photography program). She spent a year (1984-85) in France during her time at CU Boulder, studying art history. She wrote a lot in Europe. She fell in love with the arts in Europe. She recently taught art to sixth-graders at the Kibera School for Girls in Kenya. Late last year, in Highland Park, TAC housed The Art of Giving Back gallery exhibit “Invisible Words.” It displayed signs that homeless people, f rom Illinois and other states, had created to communicate to drivers, to pedestrians, to anybody with eyesight. One sign announced, “This is awkward 4 me too.” The exhibit’s artist, Highland Park native and environmental activist Wendy Abrams, had interacted with the signs’ authors before offering to buy the signs. Yes, the powerful conceptual project raised awareness of homelessness issues. But it revealed something deeper, something

meaningful. “It helped build e m p a t h y, ” Rudman says. “It reminded people that behind each sign is a human. Art isn’t always a pretty picture or a pretty painting on a wall. We see the signs held by homeless people, but how often do we read what ’s on them? You’ve heard the saying ‘Home is where the heart is.’ Well, where does a person feel such affection if the person is homeless?” T A C hosted a special event last May, “Meet Nature Cat.” The f ree event for families featured eco-STEM activities with Na t u re C a t . Nature Cat is an educational animated children’s televis i on s e r i e s . Three men created it. One has been married to Caren for nearly 30 years. “Our worlds collided on that d a y, ” Caren Rudman says. “David and I are artists. We both understand the work involved, the process of art. “We share ideas.” Art and … love. Love and art.
