The Village of Glencoe is celebrating its 150year anniversary this year, and what better way to kick off the festivities than with a musical tribute mixing old songs with fresh lyrics to tell the story of Glencoe’s unique history? After all, Glencoe is home to the nationally renowned Writers Theatre, a North Shore architectural landmark that stages some of the Chicago area’s best theatrical productions. “When the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee began discussing ways for the community to celebrate the Village’s 150th anniversary, there was never any doubt about Writers Theatre’s (WT) inclusion in that process,” says Karen Ettelson, chair of Glencoe’s Sesquicentennial Planning Committee. After more than a year of preparation, village officials are thrilled to soon be raising the curtain on “I Love This Town: A Musical Tribute to Glencoe,” Continued on PG 10

NEWS SO HAPPY TOGETHER Continued from PG 1 Ella Joy Won, now 9 and a fourth-grader, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was 4. In 2017 she found out she had leukemia. Leeson, now a senior at LFHS, and her classmate Katie Abdallah, another visitor to the Won household on the day that video was shot, are members of Battle Buddies, a nonprofit launched from the school’s Business Incubator program at the start of the 2017-18 academic year. Its mission seeks to raise the spirits of pediatric cancer patients by pairing them with young adult volunteers biweekly. The 501(c)(3)’s tagline: “Give the children a break.” Battle Buddies considers each pediatric cancer patient a trooper. The organization’s first trooper was Ella Joy, in remission today. Pediatric cancer patients and their families welcome distractions, seek distractions, because they often bury the burdensome thoughts of cancer and the lingering fear and anxiety before that next chemotherapy session—or tomorrow’s radiation therapy session. Leeson and Abdallah have served, happily and consistently, as Won’s wonderful distractions 12 times since early 2018. Another Battle Buddy, LFHS senior Ashley Bufe, also has played games with Ella Joy, has danced with Ella Joy, has watched Ella Joy open gifts, has probably felt pain from bouts of laughter inside the Won house. It’s a 52-mile trip from Lake Forest to South Elgin. “It’s worth it,” Leeson says. “We enjoy our time there as much as Ella does.” Two other Battle Buddies at LFHS are seniors Tate Dahlgren and Collin Thiergart. Dahlgren essentially told a room full of adults at the 2018 INCubatoredu National Pitch Competition in Chicago that a pediatric cancer patient’s happiness is Battle Buddies’ first and last priority and all of the ones in between. Simple as that. Heartfelt as that. No need for a complex metric. Battle Buddies’ Trooper No. 2 is a 13-year-old from Glenview, Trooper No. 3 a 5-year-old from Lake Forest. The group received $10,000 in donations at a Pfizer Trade Show last October. “We want more troopers and more opportunities for our buddies to brighten kids’ days and make their weeks; finding troopers—that’s our biggest struggle,” admits Abdallah, whose father, David, died of cancer at the age of 51 last November. Her mother, Julie, also has cancer. “We want to get the word out,” she adds. Battle Buddies’ most appreciative fan older than 9 is Ella Joy’s mother, Anne. One hour, maybe less, after Battle Buddies’ first two-hour visit with Ella OUR KIND OF TOWN Continued from PG 1 set to open at the Writers Theatre on March 18 with two, one-hour performances at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Penned by playwright Doug Frew (who also writes the script and musical score for Worldplay Gala, The Writers Theatre annual fundraising event) and inspired by Bon Jovi’s 2007 hit song, “I Love This Town,” the musical tribute will feature an eclectic blend of music set to a live, six-piece band led by Writers Theatre Musical Director Matt Deitchman. The show’s cast will include a pool of professional actors and musicians who regularly participate in Writers Theatre productions. “The broad range of music will speak to a variety of tastes,” explains Frew. “I chose songs that will help me tell a wide-ranging story of Glencoe’s

Joy, Anne texted a question to Abdallah and Leeson. “I wanted to know when my daughter would get to see Katie and Jen again,” Anne recalls. “We scheduled the next visit. They’re kind and sweet, truly genuine. You should see what Ella Joy and her younger brother [Asaph] do soon after I tell them, ‘Battle Buddies are coming today!’ They jump several times. They yell ‘Yeahhh!’ in unison. When the buddies are here, it gives me time to do some work, do the laundry, clean up the house.” It also allows Ella Joy to exercise her brain. Many of the games she plays with her buddies for life feature learning elements. Her buddies are smart, Reason No. 517 (unofficially) why Anne and her husband, Mike, are staunch proponents of Battle Buddies. Cancer treatments took quite a toll on Ella Joy, her young brain powerless to shield the regimens. She underwent radiation—the max. Unable to attend school in 2017-18 because of her condition, Ella Joy completed third grade under the guidance of a
tutor. “The games they play with my daughter when they’re at our house, plus my daughter spending the time she does with them, interacting with them—all of those moments stimulate Ella Joy, strengthen her, keep her sharp mentally,” Anne Won says. “I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am.” Problem No. 99 on a list of 100 problems led to the birth of Battle Buddies in the Business Incubator, spearheaded by Mr. Joe Pulio. Successful ventures recognize problems and solve problems. Abdallah and her cohorts brainstormed for problems one day. One problem: removing used gum from the bottom of a shoe. Another: finding lost car keys. Abdallah, thinking of her parents, jotted Lack of things to do during chemotherapy sessions. It was a serious line on the list. It was worth pursuing. More brainstorming followed. The group then thought of youngsters with cancer,
alone and scared and friendless, in hospitals. They sure could use a respite from all those doctors and nurses and other adults. The five Business Incubator students hit a Starbucks in Lake Forest to come up with a name for their project, putting their heads together and visiting thesaurus.com more than once. Abdallah liked how friendly ‘buddy’ sounds. Battle? That fit. Battle Buddies. You can’t go wrong with alliteration, right? The interview and photo session with the five Battle Buddies nears its end on a February morning at LFHS. Abdallah had received a text message, at 8:59 a.m. It was an invite to a birthday party on April 20. A trooper—a brave girl, a true hero—turns 10 on April 21. Buddies could not wait to travel the 52 miles for the big day.
history, cultural institutions, notable residents, architecture, and personality.” “I Love This Town” covers the history of Glencoe from the first non-native settler, up through the present day, including the people and iconic places that make Glencoe unique. “We are a small village that has had a big impact in many areas,” said Village Manager Phil Kiraly. 105 years ago, Glencoe became the first village in Illinois and the 13th village in the United States to establish a council-manager form of government. The village later went on to lead the nation in consolidating its fire and police protection programs into a unified Department of Public Safety in 1954. Home to the third largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures in the world, Glencoe is known for its deep-rooted traditions, including robust Memorial Day and Fourth of July
celebrations. “I think that one of the things that shows the most respect for tradition in Glencoe is the number of multi-generational families living here,” says Kiraly. “It speaks powerfully to the success of the customs and institutions in our village.” The Village of Glencoe and the Glencoe Historical Society (GHS) began a partnership to plan sesquicentennial activities more than two years ago. Since then, they have collaborated with more than 30 different village organizations to lay out a yearlong celebration that focuses on education, participation, and appreciation. Planners include a mix of professionals and volunteers. “This group has been instrumental in helping to raise the funding to keep ticket prices low and accessible to the community as a whole,” adds Ettelson.
The musical tribute idea was born in brainstorming sessions with WT Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kathryn Lipuma. Originally planned as a one-performance production, village officials added a second performance after nearly all 250-seats in the WT’s Alexandra C. & John D. Nichols Theatre were spoken for—weeks in advance. “I think what makes Glencoe such an extraordinary village is the wholehearted engagement of the people who live here,” says Frew. “It’s rare to find such a tight-knit, confident, and fun-loving group of neighbors. The pride in Glencoe is palpable.”

His family enjoyed a reunion in Lake Forest on the Fourth of July every year along with a special gathering at the Rolling Rock Club in Pennsylvania to celebrate his 90th birthday in 2017. He felt particularly blessed to have all three of his children living in Lake Forest or nearby and to have three of his grandchildren living in Lake Forest. Watching his grandchildren play for their teams in hockey, tennis, soccer, and basketball—as well as joining them for golf—was always the highlight of that day. His beloved wife of 66 years, Nancy, passed away in 2016. His survivors include his three children Sandra Harkness Sweet (Mira), Philip W. K. Sweet III (Carol), David A. F. Sweet (Tricia), along with six grandchildren: Stephanie Sweet Ingersoll (Dan), Stacy Sweet Patlovich (Eric), Marilla Sweet Perkins (Luke), Hannah Harding Sweet, David A. F. Sweet Jr., and Philip W. K. Sweet II. He is also survived by five great grandsons—Henry Ingersoll, George Ingersoll, Whit Patlovich, Andrew Patlovich and Fritz Perkins. His sister, Virginia Sweet Cobb, also survives him. POWER OF POSITIVITY Winnetka native and New Trier High alumnus Jeff Kuhn turned his near-death medical traumas into a best-selling book then. “Doctors told me later that I had a zero chance of surviving those burns. I bet a million people there will remember me.” He followed New Trier with a degree in economics at Dartmouth (French literature, too), then a master’s degree at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management and another master’s in real estate from USC in Los Angeles. He, his wife, and high school-aged son share time these days between homes in Los Angeles and Tucson. But the line to peace was hardly straight since the fire and reclamation. Two years after rebuilding from the burns, he was struck by a mysterious but profound auto-immune neuromuscular illness. That also nearly killed him. Texas doctors thought at first he had become the originating “patient zero” of a new, but deadly condition. Again, he beat potentially fatal odds. No one knows the scientific reason why. He was profoundly ill, and then normal. That took another two years of pain. He was left unemployed and bankrupt financially. Only Sparky, his Yellow Labrador retriever, made it through with him. Kuhn’s dances with death have shaped his clear vision of self-constructed survival, fueled by the supreme power of will and faith. The book is merely him standing up to fate by helping others in the same fix. “This is not an autobiography,” he says. “I didn’t get the urge to do this book just to tell everyone that I’m a great guy. I want to reach people. To show them. To help.” He says he’s been inundated with stories from survivors who took heart in his tale, adopted his way of thinking, and recovered. They’ve shared their road back with him, too. So, there might be another book in the future.
His prescription? “No matter what difficulty you’re facing or will face, you do have the power inside you to persevere, and make it to the other side of a serious setback,” he says. “The main takeaway from my story is that any major comeback in life may require a significant amount of time to accomplish, as well as a laser-like focus on your ultimate goal. You must fight through the pain, and push back against any thoughts of quitting, because anything less than 100 percent success is not acceptable.”

Post-er Boys Fun, lengthy run ends for tall Trevians Brayboy and Boehm

They walked toward an exit, in silence, in a hallway at Glenbrook North High School, their basketball season now history after only two playoff games. New Trier High School’s boy basketball players appeared stunned on March 1. Schaumburg High School, seeded seventh in the Class 4A Niles North Sectional, had defeated second-seeded NTHS 61-45 in a regional final in Northbrook.

Brayboy also had to sit out games because of an injury in January. “Boom—just like that, injuries happened,” Fricke, his head shaking, recalled. NT senior guard Noah Osher tallied six points (two treys) in the loss last weekend. Reserve guards Gabriel DeGrandis, a senior, and Sean McNeely, a junior, each hit a three-pointer in the final minute.

The 6-foot-8 Boehm pulled the 6-9 Brayboy closer to him for a brief, consoling moment, a pair of adjoining trees in high tops trudging to the team bus. Boehm then broke the silence. “What a run, huh?” Boehm said. Their run together lasted four varsity seasons. Last winter’s journey—New Trier achieving Sweet 16 status, before falling to Evanston Township High School in a sectional final at Maine East High School—featured heroics from starters and reserves and an unforgettable, double-overtime win over Niles North in a sectional semifinal. “So special,” Trevians coach Scott Fricke said after last weekend’s loss, referring to the Harvardbound Brayboy, the Washington (Missouri) University-bound Boehm and the rest of his seniors this winter. “Winning close to a [combined] 50 games the last two seasons, starting the way we did this year [7-1], getting ranked as high as sixth [by the Chicago Sun-Times] at one point in the season, I’m proud, really proud, of the way our guys com-

In Loyola Academy’s 63-43 defeat of 11th-seed Rolling Meadows HS on February 26, Barrett struck from 15 points—each coming from three-point terrain; the 6-foot-4 senior made all five of his trey attempts. Ramblers senior Nikko Landon (three assists) also scored 15; Kwiecinski finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists; junior Matthew Enghauser had six points and five boards; and Pemberton contributed three points, six rebounds and four rebounds.

peted last year and this year. “I told all of our guys after the game tonight, ‘Remember the good stuff that happened this season, not what happened in one game, this game.’ ” New Trier relied on its post players early, scoring seven of the regional championship’s first 10 points on a powerful inside move by Boehm (plus his ensuing free throw) and back-to-back buckets in the paint from Brayboy, who recorded team highs of 15 points and six rebounds. A Brayboy put-back increased NT’s lead to 14-9 with one minute left in the first quarter. The plan to pound, pound, pound and wear out the opposition’s post players was working. But Schaumburg’s
Saxons tallied the final four points of the frame and limited NT’s Trevs to only three free throws (two by senior guard Peter Burnside, one by junior guard John Carragher) in the second quarter. Schaumburg led 24-17 at the break and broke NT’s spirit with an 11-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter. Following another Brayboy put-back (NT’s first points of the final quarter), Saxons senior guard Mike Hodges hit back-to-back treys in a 47-second span, expanding the advantage to 50-29 at the 4:26 mark. “Schaumburg ended up doing a good job preparing to defend our sets,” Boehm, standing outside his team’s locker room, said after pouring in 10

Weisberg paces Keshet’s drive for inclusiveness BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Abbie Weisberg hits the treadmill at her Evanston home and runs. It ’s another day in the life of the Keshet executive director/CEO, another chance to clear her mind. She likes to thump-thump, thump-thump the continuous belt in her free time. Her mind will get a workout in later, probably on a couch not too far f rom that heartless exercise machine. Feet race first. Mind races next. “I like to reflect on that couch,” Weisberg, now sitting on a booth seat at Country Kitchen in Highland Park, says. “I like to brainstorm, too. It’s a spot where I like to relax, but sometimes I think too much on the couch because I have all these Keshet-related ideas, all these plans. More often than not I want to share what I’m thinking. “Email,” adds the cancer survivor and 54-year-old mother of three. “I also like to email from the couch.” Keshet, in its 37th year, is internationally recognized for its leading-edge services for individuals (ages 3 to 22) with disabilities. More than 70 sites in the Chicago area—including two in Highland Park—implement Keshet’s programming. Its noble mission: To do whatever necessary to allow individuals with disabilities to achieve their potential. Keshet (“rainbow” in Hebrew) wasn’t always a Sunday-to-Saturday commitment for Weisberg, a Wilmette native who orders two poached eggs and a plate of cucumber slices on the morning of a busy Wednesday in February. Some 30 years ago, shortly after attending her first Keshet Annual Rainbow Banquet with a friend who had invited her, she was a Keshet Sunday School teacher on her first day, going over the Jewish holidays for a classroom full of 8-year-olds in Northbrook. The setting energized her. The interactions with the students emboldened her. She would teach on Sundays for a year. And for the next 13 years. Weisberg got named executive director/CEO in 2008. “It’s not a job to me, never has been, never will be,” says Weisberg, who attended New Trier High School, where she portrayed Anita in the musical West Side Story, and majored in therapeutic recreation with a minor in special education at the University of Illinois. “It’s been my love and passion and

an important part of my life for years and years. I’ve met phenomenal people through Keshet, traveling all over the country. It’s been a privilege for me to give back, to make a difference in the lives of others, to represent the only organization of its kind that stands by people with disabilities, and their families, for life.” In Illinois about 25,000 adults with disabilities, including nearly 1,000 Jewish adults, are on waiting lists for residential placement. The state has a Housing issue and its last name is Crisis. Each adult waits at home, f requently with elderly parents who are no longer able to fully meet the needs of their child. Loneliness in such a living arrangement often becomes a way of life for the adult with a disability. Keshet aims to combat that feeling of isolation by providing supervised residential options, along with educational, recreational and employment opportunities. “Keshet,” Weisberg says, “cares about the whole person, year-round. We strive for creating that sense of family, that sense of belonging, for each of our Keshet individuals. We’re all about integrating our students and campers and employees, as well as Keshet residents, into communities. The experience a Keshet resident has? We want that to be as fulfilling as it is for the wonderful people around them— volunteer buddies, students, co-workers. “What I want for my children I also want for every child with a disability.” Weisberg and her husband, Mitch (“My arm candy,” Abbie says), have three daughters: Zoie, 28; Shayna, 26; and Sophia, 24. Zoie teaches at a Keshet school in Chicago, Shayna works at a Keshet house in Highland Park, and Sophia, who has a job in the financial industry, serves as a steady Keshet volunteer. None of the daughters reports to her mother. Many years ago Abbie Weisberg was asked to speak at Northwestern University about volunteer
opportunities. Zoie accompanied her, as did Zoie’s friend Mollie and Avi, a Keshet participant. Avi was fascinated with the diversity of the audience members and couldn’t hide his unbridled interest in seeing them, in being there. The audience members were smitten with Avi’s enthusiasm. Avi, years later on a Keshet trip to Las Vegas, engaged in a lively conversation with a cab driver, talking food and world capitals, among other topics. They sang a song together, too, right there in the taxi. “Northwestern asked me to come back the next day and speak again,” Weisberg recalls. “I told them I couldn’t. Then they asked me, ‘Is Avi available?’ ”

Count on Carol Marin, the Chicago-based television and print journalist, to share at least a few Keshet anecdotes at the Rainbow Banquet at Hyatt Regency Chicago on March 10, Day 10 of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and the day Abbie Weisberg turns 55. Keshet chose Marin as its Special Parent Speaker. She and her husband, Jonathan Utley, are parents of Keshet alumnus Gideon Utley. The annual event will honor longtime Keshet supporters Sy and Nancy Taxman; supervised residential options for adults with disabilities continue to grow because of the generous Taxman Family Foundation. And Jewel-Osco earned Keshet’s Employer of the Year nod for its ongoing commitment to employing people with disabilities at its nearly 200 stores in three states. The banquet’s major themes, once again, in two words: hope, dignity. “My first banquet, when I was 26, maybe 27, I’ll never forget it, never forget the parent who spoke and the way he delivered his powerful message,” Weisberg says. “He was an OB. His daughter was between 2 and 3 when he walked into her room and realized … his daughter had a disability. I learned a great deal about Keshet and the wonderful things it does for families on that night. “I remember thinking, while sitting at a table next to my f riend, ‘I want to be a part of Keshet.’ ” Visit keshet.org for more information.
