Ravinia Leader, Pilgrim Players Take the Stage BY DONALD LIEBENSON DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

It does not happen often, but when Ravinia Festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman is not programming Ravinia’s summer season, scouting artists at concerts and musical festivals around the world, and raising money for the more than century-old music festival, he performs in concert. On March 11, he will accompany soprano Michelle Areyzaga on piano as part of the Pilgrim Chamber Players’ concert celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centennial. “There is no more important American musician in classical music,” Kauffman said in a phone interview. Bernstein, born August 25, 1918, was a superstar conductor and the composer of symphonies, operas, ballets, choral works, chamber music, piano pieces, and film and stage musicals. He is perhaps most popularly known for his score for the Tony and Oscar-winning musical West Side Story and his series of Young People’s Concerts that were broadcast on CBS between 1958-1972. He passed away in 1990. Now in its 21st season, The Highland Parkbased concert series sets the stage for consummate Chicago musicians to perform themed concerts. The Bernstein tribute is a representative sampling of his vast works. The program will include his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Three Meditations for cello and piano from his epic Mass, which was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy for the 1971 Continued on PG 10

HERE COME THE OSCARS WILMETTE FAMILY PHOTO SPOOF BECOMES ANNUAL TRADITION BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

Nothing captures this year’s Oscar nominated movies as well as the Storinos of Wilmette, who have been recreating adorable stills of best picture nominees since 2011 starring their three daughters ages seven, five and two. The concept is the brainchild of mom Maggie Storino, whose photos went viral after she shared pictures of her oldest daughter, Sophia, who was only four months old at the time. Since then, the Oscar photos—called Don’t Call Me Oscar—have become an annual family tradition, helping the Storinos get through the punishing Chicago winters. Now that the kids are getting bigger, they are starting to come up with their own ideas on how to recreate a scene. Storino shared a few of the photos and personal insights on her famous side gig. To see all of the photos and hilarious out-takes, go to Instagram@dontcallmeoscar or dontcallmeoscar.tumblr.com. DailyNorthShore: Now that you are in your eighth year for Don’t Call Me Oscar, how has this project changed and what keeps you coming back to it? Storino: Don’t Call Me Oscar is an amazing way to spend time with my family. As the kids’ school and activity schedules become more demanding, this project is the perfect excuse to make time to play together. DNS: Are you kids providing you with more

NEWS RAVINIA Cont. from PG 1 opening of the Kennedy Center, selections from West Side Story arranged for string quartet, and selected songs performed by Areyzaga and Kauffman. In addition to Kauffman and Areyzaga, the distinguished roster of performers includes clarinetist Dileep Gangolli, a member of the Chicago Sinfonietta, violinists Michele Lekas and Renee-Paule Gauthier, violaist Rose Armbrust Griffin, cellist Steven Honigberg, a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C, and among the first to be chosen for the first year of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, and Carol Honigberg, his mother, on piano. This is Carol Honingberg’s 17th season as the Pilgrim Chamber Players’ artistic director. This concert will “showcase so many sides of Bernstein’s personality,” she said. “He’s such a genius. It is very exciting to do this program. It has both the familiar and the unfamiliar; a wide spectrum of his music.” The Pilgrim Chamber Players (so named because the ensemble’s original home was the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Chicago) began its life as a core group of musicians who later went on to other opportunities. Honinberg, who early on was invited to perform with the group, became a board member and then its artistic director. Rather than replace the departed musicians, she said, “I decided it would be much more exciting to have guest artists for each concert.” Already this year, the Pilgrim Chamber Players has hosted the Kontras Quartet and the Cavatina Duo. She reached out to Kauffman because he had previously accompanied Areyzaga, a participant in the first year of the Steans Music Institute’s vocal program. “I’ve had the pleasure of accompanying her since I first came to Ravinia (in 2000), Kauffman said. “We just enjoy working with each other.” Kauffman began playing piano at the age of seven

and, encouraged and nurtured by public school music teachers, he harbored the dream of playing jazz or classical music professionally. “Did I ever really think that Peter Serkin or Oscar Peterson (would consider me competition?)” Kauffman joked. “I knew it wasn’t in the cards, but I loved practicing and I loved performing, and I loved going to concerts.” He continues to perform, he said, because he is a passionate advocate of introducing children to classical music as part of Ravinia’s educational outreach program REACH*TEACH*PLAY. As an administrator, he added, “the terrifying prospect of performing in public is a reminder of the challenges and difficulties artists face. They make it look so easy that we can be inured to Welz Kauffman PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RAVINIA FESTIVAL how difficult it is and that it is no question that the more cultural organizais their blood on the floor.” “The other part of it,” he added, “is it’s just fun. tions the community has the better off it is.” Which is why the Ravinia Festival supports This morning for a half hour I was working on a couple of the pieces I will be playing with Michelle organizations such as the Pilgrim Chamber for the concert. They all said no. On taxes, all three contenders also expressed general agreement with the changes to the Internal Revenue Code signed into law in late December. Wynes, who said the new law helps 80 percent of the people in the district, likes the doubling of the standard deduction and the improved child tax credit. Bennett Likes Lower Tax Rates Bennett said he generally likes the lower rates but has concerns about the elimination of the deductions for state and local taxes because “it affects many of the people in the district.” Shah said the new law will stimulate business. “The tax bill helps a lot of people,” said Shah. “It will encourage small business owners to take more risks. They are going to invest. They are going to expand their businesses.” While both Shah and Wynes favor allowing people brought to the United States from another country when they were children, also known as Dreamers, to remain, Bennett said he has concerns about letting them stay. “Do we make an exception for one million people who were brought here illegally?” said Bennett. “It should be the same for everyone.” Both Wynes and Shah said they see mixing border security with the issue of Dreamers as the kind of bipartisan compromise that can pass Con-

Trump are also similar. “A wall works in some places and in other (spots) we can use technology,” said Wynes. “A wall along the whole border will be particularly difficult but we can use technology,” added Shah. “The (dreamers) should have permanent status.” All Three Want Pressure on North Korea There was agreement between Bennett, Shah and Wynes to use economic sanctions to pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program. Bennett said he wants to work with “strategic allies” like South Korea and Japan as well as “strategic enemies” like China to motivate the North Koreans. Wynes takes a longer term view. “We should strive for the reunification of the Korean peninsula under the government of South Korea,” said Wynes. “That would get rid of the Kim ( Jong Un) regime once and for all.” Other issues discussed were preservation of the Great Lakes, sexual harassment, infrastructure, health care and reproductive rights. Shah and Wynes said they support a women’s right to choose. Bennett said he opposes it. The winner of the primary will face Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) in the November 6 general election. Schneider is unopposed in the Democratic primary. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Holocaust Museum Honors Humanitarians BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center will host its 2018 Humanitarian Awards Dinner to highlight the positive influence of community leaders while reinforcing the statement “Never Again”. It takes place March 7 at 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The event will honor Mitchell Feiger and Pamela L. Netzky with the Humanitarian Award, and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, represented by David D. Hiller, president & CEO, with the Distinguished Community Leadership Award. “The Museum is profoundly grateful to Mitchell Feiger, Pamela L. Netzky and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation for their unwavering commitment to educating current and future generations about the dangers of intolerance and indifference,” said Susan Abrams, museum CEO. Television newscaster and producer Bill Kurtis will interview former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Right Honorable Tony Blair, during the keynote conversation. Brexit, immigration, anti-semitism and the state of the world today, are among the expected discussion topics. “Each year, we host a world-class speaker at our dinner and Tony Blair made great sense in 2018 given the breadth of global issues related to the museum’s work,” said Abrams. Past years’ speakers include Former First Lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Abrams told DailyNorthShore why the recipients were chosen for their awards. Feiger is president and CEO of MB Financial and has worked in the banking industry for more than 25 years. The Chicago native has deep ties to the city and its local business community, and MB Financial is focused on the wellbeing of the neighborhoods it serves. “The bank and its employees are dedicated to corporate giving, serving low and moderate-income communities, and education initiatives,” said Abrams. “For

example, the recently opened MB Ice Arena is not only a practice facility for the Chicago Blackhawks, it’s also open to the public.” Abrams added that Feiger is passionate about the “MB On The Block” program, which provides young people with the resources they need to earn a living wage by their mid-20s. Netzky, the co-founder and former president of SkinnyPop Popcorn, now Amplify Snack Brands, will also receive a Humanitarian Award. “Pam, a Chicago native, and her wife, Ashley, are dedicated to providing support to community service organizations like the Erikson Institute—the premier graduate school in child development, and the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation,” said Abrams. Abrams commended Netzky for being inspired by women in leadership, as well as a mentor to others. She shared one of her favorite quotes from Netzky: “When we recognize the work of women, we send a message to the next generation that, with hard work and dedication, nothing is impossible.” The 2018 Distinguished Community Leadership Award will go to the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Abrams explained that the McCormick Foundation convened the Illinois Civic Mission Coalition (ICMC) to prepare America’s youngest citizens to be informed

and active participants in our democracy, and their work led to Illinois’ Civics Mandate in 2015. “The Museum is working with McCormick Foundation to help educators to meet the mandate,”said Abrams. “In fact, our world-premiere Take a Stand Center provides a learning laboratory to inspire and equip visitors to engage civically.” The Humanitarian Awards Dinner began in 2006 before the museum opened in its current location in 2009. Funds initially helped establish the 65,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art museum. According to Abrams, the Humanitarian Awards Dinner is the largest fundraiser in Chicago, welcoming approximately 2,000 business, civic and community leaders. “This is the 12th Humanitarian Awards Dinner, and its proceeds support our educational initiatives,” said Abrams. “We typically raise in excess of $2 million, and that’s our goal for this year too.” Funds raised at the dinner support the preservation of Holocaust survivor stories, exhibitions, programs and educational initiatives including Opportunity Scholarships, teacher professional development, the Law Enforcement and Democracy Initiative, and student field trips. “At our Humanitarian Awards Dinner, we honor and

DNS: How did you go about putting together the costumes, props and sets? Storino: Producing the photos always reminds me how much I appreciate our community. This year I co-founded the North Shore Newsletter, a monthly e-mail of activities for local parents. Working on the newsletter has introduced me to so many incredible resources on the North Shore but I must say the best local resource is the people in our community. My heart melted last year when the librarian at the Wilmette Public Library set aside a copy of The North Shore Weekend for the girls because they were on the cover. Additionally, the museum will celebrate the past year’s accomplishments, most notably the opening of the first-in-the-world, interactive, holographic Survivor Stories Experience theater in the new Take a Stand Center. The Take a Stand Lab provides hands-on tools for affecting change and becoming an Upstander, including a toolkit for visitors to take home. “Every day we are reminded of our need for Upstanders to speak out in the face of prejudice, intolerance and bigotry,” said Abrams. In light of recent events, Abrams commented on how “deeply alarmed” her team is about the Polish law that makes it a criminal offense to mention Polish complicity in crimes committed during the Holocaust. “With this new legislation and with the recent surge of hate and anti-semitism in our own country, supporting the mission of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center is more important than ever,” she said. British man isn’t every young girl’s cup of tea), and made sure everyone was excited for the photo. Moms = amazing. DNS: Are there any locations North Shore residents should recognize in the photos? Storino: We covered a lot of new territory this year. For Lady Bird, we squeezed in the shoot between the 10:30 a.m. and the 12:30 p.m. mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winnetka. There are 12 girl cousins in our family, many of whom go to Catholic school, so it wasn’t that tough to cast this shot. The girls prayed so hard. It was adorable. The hardest location to scout was Darkest Hour. I visited nearly a dozen churches before finding this spot, a miniature chapel within the First United Methodist Church in Evanston. For Three Billboards, we returned to our favorite film spot, the Crow Island Woods. This location brought us luck in the past for Nebraska and Revenant. Last but not least, the Y.M.C.A. in Evanston will always have a special place in my heart thanks to Shape of Water.

Gridleys: Believe it Affable, talented twins have a rip-roaring time in helping Trevians capture state title BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

The Gridley twins were 2 when they just had to see the boats outside the family condo one early morning in Florida. The problem: Neither could reach high enough to open a door. The solution: Ryan Gridley got down on all fours, and Patrick Gridley mounted his brother’s back to turn a knob and open the door. Freedom — at 6 a.m. The twins tottered toward a body of water. “A canal,” Patrick, now a senior, recalled after a New Trier swimming practice last week in Winnetka. “We were always getting into trouble,” Ryan added. “Patrick was ‘Search’ and I was ‘Destroy.’ “We sat together on a pier that day, with our feet dangling.” Dangling from their necks, after the boys state swimming and diving meet at Evanston Township High School on Feb. 24? Medals. Lots and lots of medals. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound Ryan Gridley swam on all three relays and helped two of them (200-yard medley and 400 freestyle) capture gold; he served as the anchor leg of the Trevians’ fifth-place 200 free unit, and he finished runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best time of 49.08. Patrick Gridley, slightly smaller (6-3 ½) and a tad lighter (165 pounds) than Ryan? He matched his twin as a two-time relay champion, sped to runner-up honors in the 100 free (45.59) and took fifth in the 200 IM (1:51.01), as New Trier (161 points) edged two-time reigning state champion Lyons Township (150.5) to claim its 24th state title in program history and its first since winning a third straight championship in 2013. “Two of the nicest kids you’re ever going to meet,” said NT coach Josh Runkle, whose first season (2014-15) as the Trevians’ head coach was the season he welcomed “tall and skinny” freshmen Patrick and Ryan Gridley into his varsity fold. “Mature kids, too,” the coach added. “Ryan sat down with my wife, Amy, after a meet and just started talking … about all kinds of things. My daughter [Ellie, 8] has a picture of the Gridley twins in her room. She loves them, and she cried at our Senior Night, thinking she’d never get to see them again. I told her to settle down; they’re going to study and swim at Northwestern. She asked, ‘Where’s that?’ I told her, ‘Just down the road.’ ” Right around the corner is April Fools’ Day, and if you’re a Gridley twin, it’s one of your favorite days of the year. Patrick attended Ryan’s classes and Ryan attended Patrick’s classes on April 1 in the fifth grade to see how long they could get away with pulling off the fun scheme. Ryan plays the tuba for the school band; Patrick plays the bassoon. Neither knows how to play the other’s instrument, but that didn’t stop Ryan from becoming a bassoonist and Patrick from becoming a tubist on an April 1 a couple of years ago during

Scheinfeld — who had set the state record (53.6) in the prelim session — pounded his way to another triumph in the event, going 53.72, well in front of LT’s entrant (junior Michael Walsh, fourth place, 56.12) in the heat. The standings at the top after 11 events: New Trier 129, LT 124.5. Winner of the final event would get to celebrate a state championship. NT’s 400 free foursome of senior Ean Vandergraaf, Ryan Gridley, Patrick Gridley and Scheinfeld had nipped LT’s crew 3:02.79-3:02.99 in the prelims for the top seed in the championship heat. LT senior lead-off leg Henry Claesson gave his ensemble a two-plus-second lead after 100 yards in the final on Feb. 24; Ryan Gridley closed the gap with a 44.53 split; Patrick Gridley went 45.09 to give the Trevians a fairly comfortable advantage; and Scheinfeld, relying on adrenaline and sheer will, zoomed to a 44.33. The roar of the crowd abated briefly as all eyes zeroed in at the scoreboard in the Wildkits’ natatorium. NT Nation saw a “1” and a “3:01.29” next to “NT” (Lane 3) and immediately filled the place with more deafening cheers. LT (Lane 4) settled for silver with a 3:03.05. “It’s never been about state championships with this program,” Runkle insisted after New Trier’s elated boys and coaches bobbed and whooped it up and passed around the top trophy in the pool. “It’s about hoping our kids become better students and better people through swimming.” Runkle did not have to hope last weekend. He had at least two cases in point: Patrick Gridley. Ryan Gridley. Notable: NT’s 200 medley relay of Patrick Gridley, Charlie Scheinfeld, Ryan Gridley and sophomore Pearce Bailey combined for a state-record 1:29.53 in the prelims at the state swimming and diving meet at Evanston on Feb. 23. Hugs and (near) misses—and success Loyola Academy boys embrace pressure, perform well at state swimming and diving meet BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

Tommy Barr received an emphatic congratulatory gesture from his swimming coach last weekend — and lived to talk about it. “He gave me quite a bear hug,” the Loyola Academy senior, breathing normally again, said, referring to Mike Hengelmann’s not-so-tender embrace following Barr’s time of 21.3 in a 50-yard freestyle preliminary at the boys state swimming and diving meet at Evanston Township High School. The clocking on Feb. 23 was swift enough for a spot in the consolation finals on Feb. 24. Barr — who had not scored a point at state in his previous two years on varsity — touched ninth in 21.41 and later finished 10th in the 100 free (46.85). Barr’s split, as the second leg of LA’s 14thplace 200 free relay: a rapid 20.74. “Tommy had the meet of his life,” Hengelmann the Hard Hugger said of the University

“Tommy [Barr] had the meet of his life. … Luke [Maurer] established himself as a big-time swimmer in Illinois.”

of St. Thomas (Minnesota)-bound Barr. “I was excited for him. I thought I had seriously hurt him [after that prelim 50 free].” Hengelmann received clutch performances from all his Ramblers at state, with sophomore Luke Maurer leading the way with a third-place showing in the 100 free (45.63) and a fourthplace swim in the 200 free (1:39.4). Maurer took 29th (48.55) and 23rd (1:43.78) in the same events at state last winter. Maurer and Barr also combined with sophomore Everet Andrew and junior Benjamin Dukes to post a 12th-place time of 3:10.88 in the 400 free relay last weekend. A Ramblers relay last scored at state in 2013, Hengelmann noted. “Luke established himself as a big-time swimmer in the state,” Hengelmann said. “Luke and Tommy, though they swim for different clubs, formed a nice bond training together, a nice friendship throughout the season. It was fun to see.” Maurer, the son of 1992 Olympic swimming gold medalist Lea Loveless and former Loyola Academy swimming star Erik, received two words of advice from his parents before the state meet: “Have fun.” The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder did just that — THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

and came through with seriously good results. “My goal was to get to the finals [Day 2 of the state meet],” said Maurer, whose father had held the Evanston pool record in the 200 free (1:37.34) from 1989 until last weekend, when Peoria Notre Dame senior Colton Paulson supplanted it with a splendid 1:35.93 in the prelims. “Last year at state,” Luke Maurer added, “I was super excited to make it, just happy to be here. My mindset was different this year. What really helped, what I really loved and what I will always remember … my teammates. Hearing them, having their support during my events, meant a lot. We’re a positive team.” The Ramblers placed 13th (37 points) with a contingent of nine qualifying entrants, including two relays (200 and 400 free relays). All of Hengelmann’s swimming entrants bettered their sectional times in Friday’s prelims, a difficult and rare feat for a team with that many qualifiers. Ramblers senior diver Alex O’Toole advanced to Saturday’s finals session with a 10th-place showing (320 points, eight dives) in Friday’s preliminaries and finished eighth (442.65 points) after his final three plunges. “The whole weekend was fantastic; we overperformed,” Hengelmann said. “One of our program’s best Fridays, ever. I’m really happy with how the boys performed.” LA’s 200 free relay unit did not race on the second day at state, but what it did in the prelims made Hengelmann laud it like it had won a medal. The crew of Maurer, Barr, Andrew and senior Anthony Spallone entered the state meet

a shade more than a half-second from a consolation-finals berth. Dukes touched 21st in the same event with a 4:42.37. Notable: LA sophomore swimmer Luke Maurer, on senior teammate Tommy Barr: “Great energy. He’s a really good teammate. In practice, he’s always cracking jokes, keeping things light.” Barr intends to major in biology at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. … New Trier (161 points) won its 24th state swimming and diving title in program history last weekend and its first since winning a third straight championship in 2013. Two-time reigning state champion Lyons Township (150.5) finished runner-up, and Hinsdale Central took third (116.5). … Name game: Lockport junior Wrigley Fields finished 14th in diving (309.85) at last weekend’s state meet.

with the No. 30 seed time of 1:27.34 but moved up 16 — 16! — spots with a prelim time of 1:26.56; it missed a spot in the consolation finals (7 through 12) by 0.21. “Huge,” Hengelmann said. “They came up huge for us.” Andrew took 13th in the 500 free (4:40.65),

Highland Park HS: Giants junior Andrew Vorobev placed 19th in the 200 IM (1:55.76) and 32nd in the 100 butterfly (52.02) at the state meet last weekend. Vorobev broke a 32-year-old school record in the 200 IM at a sectional meet on Feb. 17, in addition to lowering his school mark in the 100 fly. Lake Forest HS: Scouts sophomore Luke Lanigan placed 31st in the 500 free (4:49.2) and swam the second leg of his team’s 400 free relay (25th place, 3:16.55, with senior Colin Robinson, sophomore Oliver Akintade and junior Carlos Minetti) at the state meet last weekend.

PAWS Chicago CEO unleashes good news BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

A small mixed-breed dog named Gabriella cries next to an abandoned building in Chicago on a Halloween night. A neighbor calls 311, triggering a response from Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) the following day. Gabriella is in agony — might have been for days. A monster of a human had doused the dog with bleach, burning the animal’s eyes and other parts of her body. CACC contacts PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Chicago, and PAWS Chicago receives Gabriella and sedates her. PAWS Chicago takes the dog to one of Chicago’s top veterinary ophthalmologists at Eye Care for Animals, hoping to save one of Gabriella’s eyes. Both have to be removed. “After the surgery, Gabriella was scared but still trusted, if you can believe it, humans,” PAWS Chicago CEO Kristin Pearson, sitting with me at Café Pettopia in Highwood, says with a warm smile. “One of our co-founders [Paula Fasseas] fostered the dog for four to six weeks, and then a family took her home. It reminded me of someone who told us, ‘We want your most challenging animal.’ “There is nothing like seeing the joy of a family taking an animal home,” adds the Lake Forest resident and owner of two dogs (Molly, 11, and Penny, 9) and a cat (Chloe, 14). Pearson, 55 and the mother of three (college students Ian and Katie and Lake Forest High School junior Ellie), has been married to Garth Pearson for nearly 25 years and has been CEO of PAWS Chicago since June 2017. After ordering a cup of coffee and a veggie omelet, she feeds me some startling — and heartwarming — statistics. A few: • The number of animals euthanized across the city of Chicago has declined from nearly 43,000 in 1997, when Fasseas and her daughter, Alexis, launched PAWS Chicago, to an estimated 5,500 in 2017.

• People of all ages served a combined 141,000 volunteer hours in 2017, or the labor power of 68 fulltime employees. • PAWS Chicago achieved a better than 98 percent save rate and is working hard to help the city of Chicago overall reach a better than 90 percent save rate and No Kill status. P A W S Chicago opened its first satellite adoption center (Glenn L. Felner North Shore Adoption Center in Highland Park) in late 2014. It also runs an adopt i o n center in Lincoln Park and a medical center in Little Village. “I drive a lot each day; I’m a ro ve r, ” s ay s Pearson, who lived

in Lake Bluff for 20 years bef ore moving to Lake Forest with her family last June. “I’m a gypsy CEO. I consider this my dream job; I’ve always loved

animals, and I wanted to find a profession where I could use my business skills and help an organization have an incredible impact on the world. If it’s possible to medically or behaviorally rehab a pet, we welcome that animal. “The impact animals have on people … it’s powerful,” she adds. “We see the best in humans, because animals can’t speak for themselves.” The PAWS for Life Program made more than 270 home visits in the Englewood and Back of the Yards neighborhoods in Chicago last year, providing medical care for 236 pets and performing 1,273 free spay/neuter surgeries. “We went door to door, identifying pets and asking the owners, ‘Need help?’ ” says Pearson, who graduated from Wellesley (Massachusetts) College with a degree in economics, earned her MBA in 1992 at the University of Michigan, worked for the New England Journal of Medicine as a marketing specialist and spent 13 years in the healthcare engagement field. “Some can’t afford to keep a pet healthy,” she adds. “We performed surgeries in a PAWS bus, in a church parking lot.” A native of Royal Oak, Michigan, Pearson attended two high schools (Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Michigan, and St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana), after moving every other month (slight exaggeration) with her family. The house in which she lives now is her … 25th. Gabriella’s home? Safe. And full of love. “You should see how that adorable dog loves to snuggle with people as she is passed from one set of arms to another,” Pearson says. PAWS Chicago holds a fundraiser, Animal Magnetism, March 16 (7 p.m.) at Morgan Manufacturing, 401 North Morgan Street in Chicago.
