Ask skiers who grew up in suburban Chicago during the 1960s and ’70s and they’ll likely remember a childhood filled with cold, snowy winters and weekend bus trips to Wisconsin ski resorts like Wilmot, Little Switzerland and Cascade. Many will tell you they earned their skiing chops on the glorified hills and minimountains of the Midwest. Back then, an abundance of ski clubs operated out of the North Shore, shuttling hundreds of kids each Saturday morning to the Wisconsin slopes for ski lessons and a day of fun, and returning them home at night - tired but happy. Fast-forward 50 years and this North Shore tradition is still going strong with two thriving weekend ski programs: the Avalanche/Trolls Club, whose home base is the Scandinavian Ski Shop in Glenview, and the Snowflake Club, which operates out of Williams Ski & Patio in Highland Park. Nearly 1,300 children signed up for membership in this year’s Snowflake Club, the North Shore’s oldest and biggest youth ski program. On the Martin Luther King Jr. school holiday, Snowflake transported more than 500 skiers aged 8-18 on six buses to Alpine Valley Resort in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. An average Saturday ski trip will draw around 250-300 participants. “Snowflake Club has successfully run the same program for 50 years with very few changes,” said Continued on PG 10

With cyberbullying on the rise and the epidemic of school shootings, Highland Park High School Theatre Arts Director Scott Shallenbarger decided to listen to his students by tackling the controversial show, Heathers, The Musical, (High School Edition). Heathers, The Musical is a dark comedy based on the 1988 film Heathers that became an off-Broadway cult classic by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe (the latter is one of the composers from Legally Blond, The Musical). The Paramount Network will also debut Heathers as a TV series on March 7. Shallenbarger explained that his students had been asking for years to perform what he describes as “a cautionary tale about bullying in high school.” But after initially reviewing Heathers, The Musical, Shallenbarger told his students that he loved the play as much as they did, but he thought it would be too difficult to attempt at the highschool level. “We are very well supported with our fine arts program in Highland Park historically, and I’ve had the affirmation of the administration and the Board of Education to do things that typical high schools don’t always get to do, and even for me the explicit language and violence (in Heathers, The Musical) seemed too much,” said Shallenbarger. Then last spring, Shallenbarger learned the creators wrote a new version of the show:

The original Heathers was written in 1988, and many of these problems are heightened today. “I’ve been a teacher at HPHS for 28 years and I believe that adolescence is harder now than even in previous generations because of social media,” said Shallenbarger. “I have so many meetings every week with kids that have been cyber-bullied or have made social media choices by themselves or others that have led to confusion, fear and depression at times, because social media is such a huge monster.” With the advent of school shootings, Shallenbarger said he chose Heathers as a platform in which his students could have discussions about it in a safe way. The musical, he hopes, will provide the context for that kind of educational exchange. While he was staging the finale, the students shared personal stories about bullying, and one remarked that she didn’t have to respond to a text if it felt toxic. Shallenbarger described his greatest challenge in bringing this controversial show to Highland Park. “The biggest challenge was ensuring that the moments of violence and dark humor didn’t become gimmicky and weren’t used for shock value,” he said. “It would be irresponsible as both a teacher and a director to handle material like that, so it was finding that fine line to make it entertaining and theatrical, while ensuring it was rooted in deep truth that the audience could sense.” Shallenbarger said he is proud of the students who have worked so hard to do the best work

The student who is portraying her, junior Hannah Greenberg, will be wearing a fat suit. There are 70 students in the cast with a total of 135 students participating in the performance. This includes the cast, stage crew, and orchestra. “The students have done an amazing job and I think they’re passionate about equality and justice,” said Shallenbarger. Shallenbarger said throughout the story you see all of the negative consequences of bullying, but it ends on an optimistic note. Though the play is hilarious, he hopes that the community can come together to discuss these issues with their children. The PG-13 rated Heathers, The Musical (High School Edition) will have its final two performances on February 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. at Highland Park High School. Tickets can be purchased during the day at the HPHS Bookstore, or at the Main Auditorium box office prior to each performance.

New Trier Sets World Record For Twins, Multiples BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

Almost every kid secretly wishes to claim a record in the Guinness Book of World Records, but to break two? Believe it or not, with 45 sets of multiples (44 twins and one set of triplets) in the sophomore year at New Trier High School, New Trier just claimed two Guinness World Records: Most Twins and Most Multiples in a Single Academic Year at One School. New Trier broke the previous record of 24 sets of twins in a single grade held by Highcrest Middle School in Wilmette since 2013. Wilmette twins Luke and Ryan Novosel, the dynamic duo who first discovered and led their middle school to break the first record, were confident heading into high school that they could break the record again. “We knew we had another record coming into New Trier,” Luke said, at a press conference on February 7. As Luke and Ryan stood at the podium with their mother, Nancy Fendley Novosel, the sophomore class multiples sat on the risers behind them — some wearing matching shirts or sweatshirts — smiling at the television news cameras. Most of the teens were girls, with 19 sets of female twins and one set of female triplets, compared to 11 sets of male twins, and 14 sets of boy/girl twins. Since entering high school, the Novosels have been gathering information to break their previous record. Guinness World Records requires applicants to submit birth certificates, school enrollment letters, photos and witness statements, according to Fendley Novosel. The numbers were in their favor, since of the 24 sets at Highcrest who broke the first record, 23 sets entered New Trier in the fall of 2016.

While the Novosels put the information together pretty quickly, it took Guiness 17 months to get back to them with the records. In the meantime, all of the multiples had to double-down and keep the effort a secret. But being twins has more benefits than just seeing double. Fendley Novosel read some of the things the sets had listed as the best part of being a multiple -study buddies, best friends, someone to laugh with, never lonely, someone to trust, someone to do things with -- were just a few aspects she shared. Anna and Lily Feinerman from Winnetka were one of the sets of twins who helped break the record. They are not identical twins — Anna has red hair and Lily is dirty blonde — but they still enjoy their inseparable bond and love the award. “I think it is so cool to think we are being recognized for this as a whole,” Anna said. DNS: What do you think will be your greatest challenge in D-112? Lubelfeld: The greatest challenge is going to be helping the community redefine the office of superintendent and the change of moving the district from its current configuration to a longer range plan. DNS: What are you most excited about coming back to HP as the new superintendent? Lubelfeld: I’m so proud to be coming back after working here for 13 years. I’m excited about having the opportunity to help restore trust in the public education system, in NSSD 112 and to help restore the students and teachers to a stature of greatness that we’ve long enjoyed. He had just heard a journalist request an interview with one of his swimmers, sophomore sprint freestyler Pearce Bailey, at the Central Suburban League South Meet at Glenbrook South on Feb. 10. Looking for the reasons you see more of Bailey’s head and limbs and not as much of his protective outer case these days? Look at his teammates. “They’ve helped me come out of my shell,” said Bailey, a dedicated Boy Scout whose Eagle Scout project (to be completed by May) is the construction of a tool shed for the community garden at Edible Evanston, an organization committed to developing sustainable local food sources. “I’m enjoying every part of being a varsity teammate. I’m not swimming for myself, and that’s why I love swimming in the relay events way more than I do in the individual events.”

So he went out for rowing. Bailey rowed in the fall and again in the spring. He swam on NT’s freshman team in the winter — some six years after being introduced to the activity at … Life Time Athletic in Skokie. “I remember thinking, I’ll give swimming a go,” Bailey said. The activity turned into a sport for him when he learned swimming techniques from then New Trier Swim Club coach Rick Peterson (now an age group and senior head coach at the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club) in the fourth grade. Bailey’s breakthrough swim last winter was his 21.7 anchor split for the frosh squad’s 200-yard medley relay. That got him thinking, again: Maybe, just maybe, I’ll get a shot someday to anchor the medley foursome on varsity. “I was hoping,” he recalled last weekend. That meant no more rowing and much more club swimming last fall. Bailey got faster, got stronger. And he became a viable candidate in the derby for the spot to swim on the varsity medley relay with three Division I swimmers (Northwest-

They trickled out of the New Trier girls hockey locker room after a game last month, some of them alone, others in pairs. In the hallway near the door stood Mae Olshansky, a New Trier left wing. Only a sophomore, she fielded questions from a scribbler about her team’s 1-0 defeat of host Glenbrook and acknowledged every passing teammate with either a quick shoulder tap or a sincere evaluation: “Good game.” Olshansky had notched the assist on freshman Serena Seiple’s goal in the game against the reigning state champions at Northbrook Sports Center on Jan. 28. The same opponent had defeated New Trier 5-2 — NT’s second loss in 18 games this winter — five days earlier. No wonder the 5-foot-4 Olshansky, a Wilmette resident, finished each of her thoughts with a goalmouth-wide smile. “My first goal ever?” she said, as the type of questions shifted to moments in her early years on the ice. “House league game, between U-6 teams. I was 5-and-a-half. I backhanded a shot from about two feet out. I celebrated as soon as I realized I had scored. Back then, with excited teammates all around me, it was like we had won the Stanley Cup.” More goals off her stick would follow, year after year after year. Through Jan. 29, when New Trier defeated Scouts Hockey (a team with players from Lake Forest and Highland Park high schools and

compete,” recalled McNerney, one of NT’s fastest skaters. “I see her as a leader now, because she’s always positive and she’s good at getting her teammates’ spirits going. What I love about her game is the way she battles for pucks. She battles, battles, battles, never stops. If we’re down by a goal, the one who’s always crashing the net until the puck goes in is Mae. “Her consistency,” the captain added, “is another one of her strengths. She’s never great in one game and then not so great in the next one.” Olshansky’s No. 1 activity without a stick? Photography, followed closely by longboarding. Her mother, Shari, also enjoys taking shots from behind a camera. She shoots, she … captures images. “My mom likes to take pictures of nature,” said Mae, who took a photography class at New Trier in her freshman year. “I like sports photography, and when I’m not doing that I enjoy taking pictures of my niece (Lana, 6) running around.” It’s not hard to picture Olshansky skating around in college-hockey togs beginning in the winter of 2020-21. She attended a national hockey camp at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and came away with an even stronger desire to develop her skills before hearing her name on Graduation Day. Her favorite hockey players are USA women’s team star Hilary Knight and University of Wisconsin standout forward Abby Roque. “Hilary,” Olshansky said, “has great hands, insane hands. I saw her play at the Women’s World Championship [last spring in Plymouth, Michigan, where Team USA edged Canada 3-2 in overtime in the gold medal game].” Nothing would thrill Olshansky more than to arrive at another big-time hockey venue, United Center, in late March — as a New Trier player in the AHAI state championship game. It’s where she watched NT teams compete for Blackhawk Cups in her grade-school years. It’s where she envisioned herself, with a puck on her stick, sizing up a defense and looking for either an open lane or an open teammate. “Mae sees everything when she’s on the ice,” Brush said. “Mae is an amazing hockey player.”

Faith driven: Heller kicks it into high gear

The one who unashamedly wears his faith on his sleeve has become an ace up the sleeve for the Highland Park High School boys swim team. Richard Heller is more than just a fast swimmer and a devout Christian. The junior also has proven to be a quick healer. His season appeared to be in jeopardy a few months ago. It looked to be tatters. Just before the 2017-18 season commenced, Heller went on a retreat with his church youth group to the Phantom Ranch Bible Camp in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. And that’s when the game of tetherball got the better of him. Being competitive comes naturally for Heller. So, he might’ve overdone it a little that day. On one of his hits, he sustained a labrum tear in one of his shoulders. “I heard it pop,” said Heller. He managed to avoid surgery. But his arms had to take an eight-week sabbatical. His legs? As good as ever. Even anxious. So, instead of kicking back and taking it easy, Heller jumped right back into the pool. He went all in by going all out. He put on some fins and tirelessly — and exclusively — worked on underwater drills. “He spent his practices just kicking,” said HP head coach Tim Sirois. And now, he’s back. Better than ever. All that kicking helped to kick-start his comeback. Heller competed in four events — 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay — and was instrumental in keying the Giants to a solid third-place team finish (326 points) behind rivals Glenbrook North (386) and Deerfield (341) at the Central Suburban League North Meet at Maine West on Feb. 10. He was as good as silver in the 100 butterfly. He was clocked in 55.92 and stayed right on the heels of Glenbrook North’s Zander Johnson (55.89). “Swimming a 55 today means the world to me,” said Heller. “I didn’t know what to expect coming into that race. Just wanted to see what I could do. “Doing all of that underwater work was the whole reason why I did well,” he added. In the 100 back, Heller got a chance to square off against two of the league’s most celebrated swimmers: HP’s Andrew Vorobev and GBN’s Ryan Purdy. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

And to his credit, Heller hung right with them. He came up with a respectable third-place finish (56.90), while Vorobev (54.12) outkicked Purdy (55.51) for the gold. Heller teamed up with Vorobev, Jake Reisner and Tobe Obochi and helped the Giants to a second-place finish (1:42.68) in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. Then, in the final event of the meet, he shared exchanges with Vorobev, Obochi and Konrad Schmidt in the 400 free relay, which took third in 3:26.17. “Heller is a versatile swimmer for us,” said Sirois. “One of our captains.” Versatile swimmer. Interesting guy. He swims with a purpose. He lives for a purpose. Heller certainly doesn’t try to conceal his faith in God. He’s not afraid to put himself out there He wears a cross necklace — that he got from a Christian sports camp — and an AO1 (Audience of One) wristband — that identifies him with the movement that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz founded. “AO1 comes from Colossians 3:23,” said Heller. “Words to live by,” he added. .Being a team captain fits well with Heller’s leadership traits. He’s become pretty good at taking charge. As part of the ministry team for the high school youth group at Christ Church, Heller is president of the student-led North Shore #HowToLife outreach ministry. “My faith is real,” said Heller. “I started taking it seriously a couple of years ago. God has opened a lot of doors. He’s working in my life.” Being athletic has been a blessing for Heller. In addition to swimming, Heller runs cross country and track at the school. In the fall, he ran a three-mile time of 16:54.5 at the Lake Forest Regional (36th place). Last spring as a member of the HP track team, he ran the 400 meters, 800 meters and 4x400 relay. He likes the challenge of those grueling races. “I like to get after it,” said Heller. More words to live by. Notable: Junior Andrew Vorobev played a starring role for the Giants at the CSL North Meet. In addition to winning the 100 backstroke (54.12), Vorobev won the 200 IM in 2:00.60. … The team’s other first-place finisher was sophomore Tobe Obochi in the 50 freestyle (23.15). He added a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.83).

Mention the name, Everet Andrew, anywhere near Loyola Academy boys swimming coach Mike Hengelmann or any of Andrew’s teammates, and the immediate reaction is the same — huge smile. “Interesting guy, unbelievably creative, quite a character,” a beaming Hengelmann says of Andrew, a sophomore freestyler with a delightful, inimitable free spirit. “There is no such thing as a boring practice with an Everet Andrew on your team. “I never know what’s going to come out of his mouth.” Andrew — a second-year varsity member and a brother of 2017 Loyola Academy graduate and UCLA freshman swimmer Olivia Andrew, a valuable member of the Ramblers’ 2014 girls swimming and diving state championship crew — often picks a “Word of the Day” at the start of a practice and encourages his teammates to use it properly in conversations throughout the practice. One of the words he chose this winter was “nonchalant.” Most of his teammates humor the humorous fellow. “We’re lifting weights as a team one day, and Everet decides we’re going to have a spelling bee,” Ramblers standout sophomore Luke Maurer recalls. A fit doesn’t get much better than the Daniel Pierce-NSWRD connection. The NSWRD, formerly the North Shore Sanitary District, is dedicated to the beneficial reuse of water resources while protecting Lake Michigan, local waterways and the environment. It owns and operates more than 100 miles of intercepting sewer lines and 10 pumping stations that collect and convey wastewater f rom local sewer systems to Water Reclamation Facilities ( WRFs) in Gurnee, Waukegan and Highland Park. NSWRD now serves more than 300,000 people in 17 Lake County communities. Our conversation flows to what Pierce likes to do in his f ree time. The former Glencoe resident (back in his high school days) reads five newspapers each weekday and three on Sundays. He also makes time for tomes, the latest a Napoleon Bonaparte biography “because I know a lot about what happened before and after he ruled.” He returned from a nine-day trip to Israel in January and would like to travel with his wife to Myanmar for the first time. Also on his must-see list: parts of China. The Pierces have landed in every continent but Antarctica. “Rhoda,” Daniel Pierce says, “wants to visit Antarctica.” Not too long ago would have been the perfect time for the pair — especially Rhoda — to check out Earth’s southernmost continent.
