Fine wines and craft brews brighten winter, benefit WCH

Calling all foodies. North Shore Restaurant Month is back for its 11th year, promising bigger and better offers than ever. Now through February 28, more than 90 restaurants will be offering a variety of specials and discounts. From free appetizers and desserts, prix fixe meals, and “2 for 1” specials to a percentage off the entire bill, this popular event is coordinated with restaurant weeks in Chicago and surrounding areas through the spring. Valentine’s Day is typically excluded from these deals. “We are thrilled that North Shore Restaurant Month is celebrating its 11th anniversary,” says Gina Speckman, executive director of Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The culinary talent and dining options on Chicago’s North Shore are unlike any other region in the country. Not only do we have gifted and award-winning chefs, but the diversity of the cuisine that is offered rivals any major city in the world.” Continued on PG 8

After taking over space once occupied by the breakfast, and inhale a hearty plate of sausage and now-closed Grille 43, Boufis and Papas went to biscuits. Those legendary breakfasts, as well as a host of work updating the interior, covering the dining other lunch and dinner options, are available once room’s generously sized banquette with slick gray again—just a stone’s throw away from the site of leather and adding soft blue pendant lights for a the old Little Nick’s—at Gus’ Corner Grille, a pop of color. The Papas Family’s Greek heritage is woven through Gus’s menu—f rom the Greek Burger (served on the restaurant’s signature brioche bun), to the Greek Fries (drizzled with lemon, feta, and oregano), to the restaurant’s popular Gyros and Eggs, a featured dish during the restaurant’s weekend breakfast service, which runs from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Chef Ramiro Velazquez turns out seasonal, impromptu lunch and dinner specials like Lobster Ravioli, as well as regular supper club-style classics like Friday Night’s Fish Fry and Saturday Night’s Prime Rib. Gus’s 15-seat bar offers patrons a nice selection of red and white wines from California, France, and Italy, along with a rotating menu of craft beers and a creative list of specialty cocktails, including

Gus’s Lightning—a potent mixture of Rumchata and Jim Beam served over ice. GLASA more than half full Sled hockey event brims with noise—and positivity—at Lake Forest College

Jacque Rogers rapped a pair of inflatable thundersticks repeatedly against a portion of the glass at one end of Lake Forest College’s ice arena last month. Many of Rogers’ LFC hockey teammates—also clustered safely behind the action unfolding near a goaltender—accompanied her with identical noisemakers, amping up the volume that the packed, cheering crowd had been providing at “The Sleds Are Coming” event on January 27. Rogers and her fellow Foresters served as boisterous spectators at the annual Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association’s (GLASA) fundraiser. Highly competitive hockey players in sleds sped across ice to control the puck and take shots in a highly anticipated game. “This is fun; it brings people together, brings communities together,” said Rogers, a Foresters
GLASA sled hockey players train hard and diligently year-round. Many typically ramp up their workout sessions as “The Sleds Are Coming” game nears. “They’re lifting weights, working out,” Fritz said. “All the time. Our trainer works with the players. Some of our players aren’t able to rely on a core to move, so they’re strengthening their arms and their shoulders. You need strength in this sport, arms in particular.” The event also spotlighted the efforts of the Falcons Hockey Association in 2018. It received the JJ O’Connor Award, which annually recognizes good character, leadership, and sportsmanship. Garrett Hahamy, of Glencoe, glided in his fourth “The Sleds Are Coming” contest last month. He had tried soccer and karate before first hitting the ice. “Sled hockey,” Garrett’s father, Ron, said, “is the most fun of the three sports for him. This is always great, watching the kids compete in an ice arena like this and hearing the support for every player.” It never ceases to impress Fritz, the perseverance of joyful GLASA athletes chasing a puck and working together in a challenging sport. Their tireless, selfless parents, often, serve as constant, vital teammates—at home. Some of the most effective assists occur miles away from the rink. “There are differences between hockey players and GLASA hockey players,” Fritz said. “GLASA players never stop smiling, never stop trying. And their parents, at games? They’re always happy.”

junior goaltender and a native of Marysville, Michigan. “GLASA hockey players,” he added, “don’t let anything stop them.” GLASA, founded by Cindy Housner in 1999, strives to “Let No One Sit on the Sidelines” and operates under a mission to promote and support the optimal development and well-being of youth, adults, and military veterans with a physical or visual disability through the provision of inclusive recreation, fitness and competitive sports activities. A GLASA Falcons Black squad battled a GLASA Falcons White crew in the sled hockey game. Jackson Kasamis—a 21-year-old, 12-year sled player from Mundelein—notched a hat trick for the victorious Falcons Black team. “The support from the fans, definitely,” Kasamis said of what makes “The Sleds Are Coming” a special occasion. “They were great. They were loud. “I got used to it, how loud it was during the game.” Former longtime LFC men’s hockey coach Tony Fritz has been involved with GLASA sled hockey since 2010. GLASA organizes three levels of the sport: youth, recreational adult and competitive adult. The LFC Foresters coach from 1978-2010, Fritz has coached GLASA competitive adult teams to two national championships in sled hockey.

“Honestly, working with GLASA athletes has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” Fritz, a Gurnee resident, said shortly after the game at LFC last month. “All these players you saw out here today … normally they play games in front of eight, maybe 10, people. Not today. Not with the tremendous support we got from the campus. Today there were 400 people watching them compete, or close to that number. The kids loved it. The kids loved the cheers, felt the crowd’s energy. “This,” he added, “is their Stanley Cup.” The gathering—sponsored by GLASA and LFC—also featured an appearance by two-time reigning Paralympic champion Brody Roybal, a forward for the United States’ men’s gold-medal sled hockey (“sledge hockey” in other countries) team at the Winter Games in Sochi (2014) and at the Games in PyeongChang (2018).
Roybal is a congenital amputee missing both legs through the hip joint. Born in Melrose Park, he flew across the rink’s surface, making something extraordinarily difficult (players use two small sticks to propel and maneuver the sled) look super easy— all while thrilling the spectators with his dazzling puck-handling skills, or, in hockey parlance, dangles. “It’s amazing what he can do,” Rogers, giving her noisemakers a brief rest, marveled. “Smooth, so smooth. He set up some unreal plays for his teammates out there.” Roybal, who signed autographs and posed for pictures with players and attendees, could have struck for a hat trick in no time, but his primary ice-time role was to feed the puck to open teammates. That he did. Often. And quite well.

The distance between the Giller home in Wilmette and Fonseca Martial Arts in Wilmette is shorter than a mile. Scott Giller walked it one day with daughter Jillian, his eldest of three with wife Jenifer, more than two years ago. Jillian was a karate student at the center. Scott was a 5-foot-10, 235pound dad and the managing director of foreign exchange at Fifth Third Bank in Chicago. “Out of shape, that’s what I was,” Giller, now 46 and in his 14th year with the bank, admits 29 years after his senior season as a 171-pound wrestler and two-way football lineman at Highland Park High School. Dad did not usher daughter to class and immediately return home that day. He stuck around Fonseca and signed up for a karate class, thanks to a persuasive Jillian. He then received instruction twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes on Saturdays. Moving. Mr. Giller was moving around atop a mat again, loving it, kicking and sweating, feeling his h e a r t pound. Fe e l i n g … alive. “I remember thinking, ‘I can do this,’ ” s a y s G i l l e r, who, in his senior year at HPHS, suffered a broken ankle in a regional championship bout, an injury that shattered a promising season and lingered and lingered and lingered during his years as a wrestler and political science major at Illinois State University in Normal.

“I also thought, ‘This is good for me; I need this.’ I felt great at Fonseca. I felt a resurgence.” The 1990 HPHS graduate and former Chicago Mercantile Exchange runner tried Brazilian JiuJitsu—a martial art and combat sport, with an emphasis on ground fighting—next, developing an array of techniques in the sport under the guidance of first degree black belt Jeff Serafin at Serafin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Evanston. Jillian, now 12, joined her father there. Jillian knows jiu-jitsu. “Doing jiu-jitsu is second to none if you’re looking to get fit, stronger, more flexible, or if weight loss is your goal,” Scott Giller says, adding Jillian often battles 18- and 19-year-olds at Serafin and has already collected bronze, silver and gold medals (in that order) at tournaments. “Our middle daughter [Rowan, 10] is also into it. Jiu-jitsu is big along the North Shore, getting more and more popular. I’ve noticed my girls are stronger and more confident because of jiu-jitsu. They’re healthy and energetic, and their success in jiu-jitsu is carrying over to their schoolwork.” In mid-December Giller captured a gold medal in the Blue Belt Masters 4 division at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s (IBJJF’s) No-Gi (grappling without jiu-jitsu’s traditional uniform) World Masters Championships in Anaheim, California. Scott Giller, world champion. The same Scott Giller had started competing in jiu-jitsu only 18 months earlier. In early 2018 Giller topped the field in his division at the Pan Championships—the largest BJJ tournament in North America—in Irvine, California, and silvered in August at the 2018 IBJJF Wo r l d Masters in Las Vegas. His career record in jiu-jitsu, through the end of last month? A brilliant 40-1. “My wife,” a grinning Giller says, “says jiu-jitsu looks like aggressive cuddling.” Jenifer grew up in Florida and attended Northwestern University, earning a degree in music education. Scott got his MBA at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He was 33 when he said “I do.” The Giller family moved from Arlington

Heights to Wilmette four years ago. Jenifer played the oboe in college. She plays the cello today. All three of the couple’s daughters, including the youngest (ukuleleist Remy, 6), play an instrument. Scott? His entrance song to a jiu-jitsu bout held in Oak Lawn last year was “Whatever it Takes” by Imagine Dragons. (Scott did not warble the tune; a recording of the former Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song blared inside the pavilion.) “Jenifer is super intelligent, passionate about life and caring,” Giller, down to a sturdy 200 pounds, says in between his bites of a Disaster Special omelet (green peppers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms) at Sarkis Café in Evanston. “A great mom, too, such a great mom.” Dad Giller, unlike many business folks, doesn’t need a round of golf with a client or two to complete a deal. On more than one occasion in the southeastern United States, Giller has trained with a client in a jiu-jitsu session. No armbars barred? (I forgot to ask). The man who walked one of his daughters to Fonseca Martial Arts in 2016 now trains four days a week at Serafin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. From strolling along a sidewalk to executing a technique to sweep a menacing foe off his feet. You’ve come a long way, Scotty. “It has changed me for the better, the way it has improved my health, my mindset, my outlook on many things, my treatment of people,” Giller says of his steady relationship with jiu-jitsu. “I feel sharper. But there’s nothing I love to do more than spend time with my family. Nothing in my life is a close second to that.” Remy is proud of her father’s feats on mats, as are Rowan and Jillian. Remy is too young to begin jiu-jitsu, her father says, though that hasn’t kept her from thinking big thoughts. Shiny thoughts. “Remy,” Giller says, “wants to win a gold medal in jiu-jitsu someday, just like Jillian, not like her daddy.” As our breakfast interview nears its end, I inform Giller of the probable run date of “Sunday Breakfast with Scott Giller”. “It had better be a good article,” says Giller, his eyes narrowing, his face turning dead serious. “I know jiu-jitsu,” he adds. He glowers some more. Seconds later his eyes widen, his face softens. A Giller smile appears. He laughs. I laugh. He had had his fun. I had my ending. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
