CHEERS TO BEER Wilmette Historical Society to host ‘City of Booze Shoulders’ talk BY DONALD LIEBENSON THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The first thing that pops into your mind, at the mention of Chicago? Maybe it’s the city’s fabled political corruption or its professional sports teams or its architecture or its signature hot dogs and pizza. Liz Garibay’s answer? None of the above. Alcohol, particularly beer, is inextricably aligned with Chicago’s foundation and development, in her mind. The former public historian at the Chicago History Museum will speak about Chicago as the “City of Booze Shoulders” January 27 at the Wilmette Historical Society. The presentation begins at 2 p.m. “When people talk about Chicago, past to present, beer and the beer industry should be front and center because [they] really helped build the city,” Garibay says. Garibay is the founder of the Chicago Brewseum. Its inaugural exhibition, “Brewing Up Chicago,” was installed at the Field Museum. The Brewseum’s mission is to take “a deeper look into one of the oldest beverages and its power to build community and its importance as an ongoing cultural force.” “My work,” Garibay says, “explores history Continued on PG 10

Anne Harper credits her mom and the community of Highland Park with much of her success. The founder of the hugely popular OMG! Accessories line of whimsical girls bags went from waitress to CEO of a lucrative business with a posh flagship showroom in Manhattan. “Ever since I was a little girl, wearing a pink tutu, pink cashmere, and glitter shoes, I knew I wanted to be in fashion,” Harper says from her headquarters in New York City, where she resides. Harper considers her mother, Judy Aberman, her most significant role model. As a single mom, Aberman was determined that her children would continue to grow up in Highland Park even after she and Harper’s father divorced. She worked as a teacher on Chicago’s West Side for many years. “Mom made sure we could live in Highland Park, go to the best schools, and have great opportunities to benefit us in the future,” Harper says. One such opportunity came via a waitressing job. “When I was in high school, I really wanted to get a job; I was a little eager to be ambitious,” Harper says. But she was only 14 at the time. “I needed a worker’s permit, and the school helped me get it,” she says of teachers and administrators at Highland Park High School. “They were always willing to facilitate the needs of students.” Harper worked eight hours per week as a waitress at Ravinia BBQ and Grill (which closed in 2015 after 30 years) and worked there for 16 years until she launched her business. “I feel very fortunate to have worked at a neighborhood restaurant with locals,” she says. “I got to meet and talk with so many people. Whatever questions I had, I could get answers. All these people around me had insight and information to share.” This lesson would become pivotal to the

Since fashion was something she loved for her entire life, Harper chose to study fashion merchandising management at Columbia College in Chicago—all while maintaining her job at Ravinia BBQ. During her senior year she got hired for an internship by a Highland Park family that owned Wheeling-based Fashion Express. The company made affordable fashion-forward products. Harper was Fashion Express’ very first intern. “I walked in and saw all the products and realized this is exactly what I wanted to do,” recalls Harper. Harper learned the ropes, rising through the ranks from intern to designer during her eightplus years there, and working side-by-side with the head creative director. “She taught me everything I know about this business,” Harper says. When the owner of the business passed away, Harper had the vision to go out on her own and do something similar, with the aim to make the products better. Throughout this time, she kept her job at Ravinia BBQ. “I realized I had this whole network around me, and I told everyone that I wanted to start a company,” Harper says. “I started gathering information. All these people were willing to give free advice. They loved to tell their stories about starting from nothing; many were entrepreneurs who had started on their own from a creative idea. “I knew the most important part of the business was product. I knew customer service, how to take care of people, and how to solve problems. I just needed money.” And she wasn’t afraid to ask for it. After putting together a business plan, Harper asked customers she knew well at the restaurant to invest in her business. “Mom always said, ‘If you don’t ask, you’ll never know,’ ” Harper remembers. “She’d then add, ‘What’s the worst thing they could happen? They’d say no.’ ” But enough said yes to enable Harper to raise the $100,000 she needed to launch OMG! Accessories out of her tiny Chicago apartment. As for what to produce, Harper knew that she wanted to appeal to the children’s demographic, and that she wanted to make a product that looked nice and felt nice but wasn’t too expensive. “The Millennials’ children were coming of age, and with social media, they are so much faster,” she explains. “Girls who are just 4 to 6 years old have lip gloss and smart phones, and they need to put their stuff in something.” Initially that something turned out to be a micro mini-bag with a unicorn theme. “We wanted to make something that stands out and is original, rather than a designer look-alike bag, and we made the mini-bags glittery and CHEERS TO BEER Continued from PG 1 through the lens of alcohol because I truly believe that alcohol is a lubricant for history.” She found this intoxicating niche as a bar-patronizing grad student who became enthralled with stories told to her by older bar regulars. “They had 20-30 years worth of stories [about the bar],” she says. “They were invaluable oral histories, and I started writing things down. Realizing

sparkly to cater to the youth demographic,” Harper says. “We said, ‘If she’s 7, she’ll love it. If she’s 11, she’ll love it.’” The unicorn inspiration turned out to be a huge hit, and help establish and define the brand for the company. “We make the best unicorn in the market. I knew it needed to be pretty and have eyelashes. The unicorn is the star, and her name is Miss Gwen. “Initially I started out really slowly, which gave me time to work on all aspects of the business and learn about things like importing and warehousing.” Then, after more than three years in the business, she met Kenilworth resident Jerry Putnam, an entrepreneur who was looking to invest in a company. “He ended up fully investing in my company and bought out all the other investors,” Harper says. “We grew faster and faster,” says Harper, who realized she needed to be in New York City full time to make this work. She packed herself and her little French

I did my own research and discovered new stories that told the history of that particular bar.” When Garibay started working at the Chicago History Museum, she compiled roughly 100 such histories and thought they could be used as an educational tool. Integrating alcohol with learning was first me met with skepticism, but her innovative History Pub Crawls became popular programs. Think of beer and Chicago, and one’s first

thoughts are probably of the Prohibition era, Al Capone and perhaps Eliot Ness. But Chicago’s beer roots were brewing centuries earlier. Garibay says Prohibition will get barely a mention in her presentation. “I begin in the late 1700s, when the swamp town that would eventually be settled as Chicago was barely inhabited,” says Garibay, who credits German immigrants with introducing beer to the area. “Beer wasn’t widely available; it was pricey, and there was no refrigeration, so it did not have a long shelf life.

Louie has become the store mascot, and the company recently released a mini-backpack. “The mini-backpack will put us on the map,” Harper says. “It hit the market at the right time and instantly started selling. Stores are blowing it out.” OMG! So what’s next? “Everyone knows that unicorns are the craze,” Harper says. “In the up and coming season, Miss Gwen has grown wings. As she grows the company grows. “I think we are ready to fly.” “It’s not something you’d want to spend your money on when you’re just trying to get going,” she adds. The rest of the story, Garibay continues, “is incredibly powerful, diverse, and complicated, but it’s also exciting. Trip the light fantastic — to sculptor’s front yard Thomas’ bright, playful ‘2-D Lite’ creation inspires onlookers in Highland Park BY DONALD LIEBENSON THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The lighted free-form sculpture on Temple Avenue in Highland Park may, at first glance, seem like a ghost of Christmas just past, but this is no ordinary holiday decoration or ornamentation. It was created to send a message of inspiration and creativity to last into the New Year, or at least “until the lawn needs mowing,” cracks sculptor David Thomas, who tends to leave his creations up until the spring. Gracing Thomas’ front yard, the sculpture— titled 2-D Lite—is fashioned out of conduit pipe shaped by hand and secured with rope and duct tape. “It’s rather primitive,” Thomas says. “I like a gestural approach—free form and flowing; from thought to hand and pencil to, boom, sculpture. I made the initial sketches in under a minute. They were very spontaneous, and I tried to translate that into the sculpture.” The piece is festooned with an estimated 2,000 red, green and white holidays lights. “I don’t overly plan how to put the lights on,” he says. “I wanted it to look spontaneous with an energy, freshness and uniqueness to it. It’s like painting in space with light.” Thomas, president of Perimeter Builders, an

Nationally renowned Wilmette artist Ben Whitehouse—in concert with the environmental advocacy group Go Green Wilmette—is proving that when it comes to building awareness of the earth’s precious natural resources, the sky’s the limit. Whitehouse, a painter and video artist best known for his large-scale paintings and 24-hour video projections called Revolutions, is the founder and executive director of Only One Sky, an educational not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to offer young people inspiring citizenart and citizen-science initiatives on global sustainability, including an annual Sky Day celebration. Only One Sky’s fete this year takes place on September 20. Two years ago Whitehouse and a small team of artists, scientists and astronauts launched a bold initiative: an international awareness campaign called the SkyDayProject, inviting citizens around the world to snap photos of the sky and upload them to the SkyDayProject website (www. skydayproject.org), creating an ever-changing online mosaic. The SkyDayProject online montage has been installed at the Adler Planetarium, the Chicago Botanic Garden and the International Space Station.

And while Whitehouse knows that taking photos of the sky will not cure the world of air pollution or reverse climate change, he believes an initiative like the SkyDayProject can serve as a non-political, non-divisive portal that allows citizens of the world to talk about climate change on a global scale. “Climate change doesn’t care who you are or who you vote for,” Whitehouse says. “It is simply a scientific reality, like gravity. Ma‘dime’ Douglass LFHS point guard sets mark for career assists—with more than a year of eligibility left BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Nearly two hours after suffering a painful ankle injury in a loss to visiting Hersey High School on January 12, Lake Forest High School junior point guard Halle (pronounced HAL-lee) Douglass—the most productive passer in girls basketball history at LFHS—did not pass on our request to ask her all kinds of questions, some serious and some whimsical. The program leader in career assists (414, through January 14) delivered again, sharing her quick thoughts on her parents and a school assignment and several other topics.

I’d like to tell them, ‘Keep working hard and be excited for high school basketball and high school in general.’

The North Shore Weekend: Now that you achieved the record for career assists in girls basketball at Lake Forest High School, do you remember your very first assist, back in 2016? Halle Douglass: No. But I do know it was against Lake Forest Academy at the Vernon Hills Tournament. TNSW: What was that like, being a freshman on varsity in the season opener away from your home court? HD: I was nervous, so nervous. I remember we were down by one point [in an eventual win] with about 30 seconds remaining, and I had to inbound the ball. My hands were shaking. TNSW: What about the assist this winter that surpassed the career mark set by Delaney Williams (who played from 2013-17)? Care to recount that pass?

TNSW: Best advice you have received from your dad?

HD: I like to bake. I like to bake cake, chocolate cake mostly. But I don't like to eat cake. I bake for others, especially my family. TNSW: Your favorite pig-out food? HD: French fries. I love the fries with melted cheese at Buffo’s [in Highwood]. The best. You

HD: [Sophomore guard] Molly Fisher. She doesn’t score much, but she is such an important player, with all the little things she does for us. She plays great defense, exerting a ton of energy when we’re applying full-court pressure. She comes up with a big three [-pointer] here and there, hits the floor for a key steal … things like that.

HD: Oh my gosh, he’s given me so much advice. Probably, ‘Keep working hard, because you can achieve anything you want by working hard at it.’ TNSW: Best advice you have received from your mom? HD: ‘Keep doing what you love and be positive, no matter what.’ TNSW: Say you get to have dinner tonight with any professional athlete in the world. Name that athlete. Then explain why you chose that athlete. HD: LeBron James. I’d want to know how much time he spent in the gym while growing up. I’d also ask him about his other basketball experiences before he became a professional basketball player. TNSW: The most improved part of your game since last season? HD: Finishing around the basket. I’m stronger, and I’m figuring out how to play better in the post. TNSW: What would you like to add to your game between now and the start of next season? HD: I’d like to improve my consistency as a shooter. I want to be more consistent as a threepoint shooter and as a mid-range shooter. I changed my shooting form a little in the fall.

TNSW: What would Halle Douglass today say to Halle Douglass, the incoming freshman in 2016?

TNSW: When the postseason begins next month, what will opponents have to worry about the most when they face you and the Scouts (16-5, through January 14)?

phrey Bogart in a play about a recently divorced film critic who identifies with the movie Casablanca and its character Rick Blaine (Bogart role). “I was not a confident kid,” Joe Pulio, a 1978 Schaumburg HS graduate, recalls. “I remember being inspired by my younger sister [Laura] while watching her perform in plays in the eighth grade. “I thought, ‘Why not give theater a try?’ ” Today Laura Pulio-Colbert is a professor of Speech & Theatre at Harper College in Palatine. This winter her big brother is set to direct Big Brother and other characters in the play 1984 at Lake Forest High School. Joe Pulio, 58, teaches business and coaches speech at LFHS and serves as the school’s theater department lead instructor. The theater department was created only two years ago, thanks to the leadership and vision of the school’s principal, Dr. Chala Holland. “She has been a tremendous supporter of the arts at our school,” says Pulio, a Volo resident. “I’ve seen the positive impact of theater experiences on my students and on my children [Danny, Michael

and Emmarose]. Kids change for the better through theater, through any of the arts, really; their confidence level increases. “For years my message has been, ‘You’re able to develop tools in the arts that will be valuable in other areas in your life.’ And people in the arts feel better about themselves after creating or performing.” Pulio lifts a spoonful of oatmeal at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest and consumes it. Shortly thereafter the teacher in him is front and center. It’s time for him to explain growth mindset vs. fixed mindset. Suddenly I’m a teen in a classroom all over again, eager for a teacher to feed me knowledge. I straighten up, pen at the ready to stain the next sheet of paper. “Theater,” he begins, “is embedded in growth mindset. People with a growth mindset believe they can learn, develop skills, learn from their mistakes, change after receiving useful feedback.” Fixed mindset? I learn that those with that type of outlook are shruggers who think their levels of intelligence and talent are incapable of being developed. Effort, to them, is pointless. They skate through life. They never think to sharpen their skates. “It’s rewarding, seeing passion from students who care about discovering and improving—even while they’re out of their comfort zone,” says Pulio, also a force behind the school’s Business Incubator, a junior-level honors course designed to expose students to all aspects of entrepreneurship. Local business leaders serve the students as mentors/coaches. The course’s “Pitch Night” could pass for the younger sibling of the television series Shark Tank. “As a teacher with a background in classical theater acting,” he continues, “I want to be real and honest with each of my students. I want them to know they’re in a learning environment, a family environment. I thrive when I work with a group, business students or theater enthusiasts, and have the opportunity to motivate them, push them, see them grow. To me it’s all about connecting with kids and fostering creativity.” Pulio enrolled at Northern Illinois University, thinking he’d double-major in marketing and theater. the butler in Annie at least 100 times at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire and at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. In between shows he worked for Ameritech Corporation as a consultant. The company’s Super School initiative introduced the internet to classrooms in the 1990s. Pulio accompanied 12 students to D.C. for a Super School presentation. “It was then,” Pulio says, “that I realized how much I had missed teaching.” Lake Forest High School welcomed him in the mid-1990s as a business teacher, Talent Show liaison and director of plays and musicals. The former gymnast had to become an adept juggler. Pulio later earned master’s degrees in Special Education (Northeastern Illinois University) and in Educational Leadership (Roosevelt University in Schaumburg). Weightlifting, gardening and landscaping are among his escapes from the classroom and stage. But each takes a back seat—no, a trunk seat—when one of his children takes the stage. Danny, when he was a Wauconda High School student, performed in the school’s jukebox musical All Shook Up, a production that earned an appearance at the prestigious Theatre Festival at Illinois State University. Emmarose, a freshman at Wauconda, portrayed Jojo in the school musical Seussical last November. “My kids gained a lot and learned a lot, attending rehearsals of plays I directed when they were young,” Pulio says. “Then, to see them grow up and to see their confidence grow, as well, through a performing art … that happened to me. “An education in the arts,” he adds, “empowers people. It often leads to success, and I’m not just referr ing to success in the arts.” You can say that again, Joe. The play 1984 runs January 31-February 2 at David Miller Theater at Lake Forest High School.
